Kelly—not a cafe ask but a request:
I would love some game recs. I’m a bit tapped/maxed out on Stardew (I’ve pretty much done everything in it, even with the big updates) but I loved that game, would be really interested in finding more like it (or just seeing what other people who liked that game have also liked)
If you wouldn’t mind sharing, of course 💜
I hope you’re having a lovely day!
Jess! I'm having an amazing day, we have a nice breeze (finally) and the sun is shining (which is a shocker here in England sometimes)!
I am delighted to share some of my favorite game recs with you, though I admit I have no idea what system you use primarily so I'll list some of my top 10 current favorite games (in no particular order) and why as well as what systems they can be played on as well as if they're on PC Gamepass 💙 I'll throw some honorable mentions on there too.
My Time at Portia [PC/Console/Mobile]: This game is a lifestyle simulation in the same vein as Stardew Valley except instead of farming you build new inventions and tech. Its set in a post-apocalyptic time where people are suspicious of a LOT of technology and like Stardew has one of the biggest varieties of romanceable NPCs if that's your thing. There are some light themes of religion vs science, but not to the point that it makes the game too philosophical. It plays okay on console but the company that Pathea hired to do the porting wasn't exactly the greatest so it can get really buggy, if you have a PC you'll get the best experience. (It IS available on Xbox game pass currently)
Catlateral Damage [PC/PS4]: So this game is literally just for fun. It's a game where you run around as a cat and your goal is to just destroy EVERYTHING. You knock things off counter tops, tables, bookshelves... it's one of those games you can turn on and play mindlessly to either kill time or work out your frustrations on imaginary dishes.
No Place Like Home [PC]: So this game is also a lifestyle simulation and like Stardew Valley it has farming as a core mechanic, but like Portia it's set in a sort of post-human scenario. In this one humans left the earth so trash ridden that they fled to Mars, your character comes back to find her grandfather and you recycle trash and actually clean up his farm and the local town (that's as far as I've gotten right now). It's a unique spin on a farming simulation.
House Flipper [PC/Console/Mobile]: As someone who can get lost for weeks if I boot up the Sims this is a very healthy alternative for me. So as you can guess the point of this game is to buy and flip houses, you can renovate them basically any way you want though paint colors and wallpapers are kind of limited. It can be very relaxing or very frustrating but I have fun playing around with designs and layouts with it and I tend to use it if I'm designing houses for fics. (Available on game pass)
Power Washing Simulator [PC/Xbox/PS4&5]: So this is one I jut picked up and only after I'd seen let's play videos on it, it's just an aesthetically pleasing game for me and I love the methodical work of powerwashing fictional things. It's another mindless game of turn it on and get the satisfaction of seeing clean lines carved through fake grunge.
Final Fantasy XIV Online [PC/Play Station]: While I have tried out numerous MMORPG games it is this one that speaks to me the best. The JRPG art style isn't exactly everyone's cup of tea and I get that, and it is a monthly service subscription if you aren't a free account so I won't try and shove it down anyone's throats, but the story for this game is absolutely phenomenal. You can play free up to level 60 and through the Heavensward Expansion, which is the base game and first expansion and still have an AMAZING experience.
Maneater [PC/Console]: Okay so I thought I was going to HATE this one. I have mild thalassophobia so underwater and ocean based games are usually a HARD pass for me. But I think since you are the predator in this game it was a bit easier for me to handle. This one is another mindless destruction game, you play as a shark and eat fish (and eventually people) to grow and level up with a crazy mutation side story and a shark hunter out to kill you. It's where my insane gamer!Pero emote/meme picture was born (I have a pink gaming chair and plan to get the Razer Kraken Kitty headset) (Also game pass available)
Tumblr media
Subnautica/Subnautica Below Zero [PC/Console]: Right so these play more like a horror game to me (thanks phobias) but the landscape and the world of both of these games are stunning. I'm playing them very slowly and have watched let's play videos already, as well as tuned into friends streaming it, but the environment of these games are really truly just beautiful. Alien oceans and creatures, base building, resource gathering, and a really deep story in both of them. Below Zero is the sequel so naturally some of the functions are more fleshed out but they're both worth a play even if they scare the pants off me. (game pass available)
Stray [PC/Xbox/PS4&5]: I can't do this list without Stray, it is absolutely a newer game but I'm in love with it. There are some levels that squick me out but don't make it fear inducing, it's very puzzle platformer and one of the coolest dystopian worlds I've seen created. The robots are all unique, the cat is cute, and there's a dedicated meow button!
Raft [PC]: This is another game I thought I'd hate, even if it is a survival/building simulation like Minecraft, because... water. But honestly I actually really love it. You can get absolutely insane with your raft building, you can have animals and bee hives, it's honestly (to me) super fun to just go creative mode and see what sort of zany designs I can come up with to work out into survival mode.
Honorable Mentions: Undertale, Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Strange Horticulture, Among Us, Pokemon Sword and Shield, Pokemon Legends Arceus, Animal Crossing New Horizons, Chrono Cross Remaster, Atelier Ryza, Crash Bandicoot and Spyro Series' remasters

               XCIV
My husband is he gone? Pale death, dear Cloe, and silence.
               XCV

My very first BellDom Fic 14/23
Tumblr media
If you're reading, I hope you're laughing
Summary:
Do you want to meet a Matthew who sees conspiracy everywhere (oh wait, this is not big news!) and is so fond of his trolley that he treat it like a sort of puppy? Do you want to meet a Dominic in love with… himself (and with Matt, too, of course!)? And do you want to meet a Chris who wants to prove to the world he's the most masculine guy ever… but is unavoidably attracted by every… female hobby? This is what you'll find in this story, among lots of BellDom and… craziness!
Summary of the chapter: None. It's just way too crazy to sum it up!!
Well, this chapter surely doesn't help develop the plot... supposing that there is a plot!
It's the most stupid, demented chapter I've written so far, that's why I hope you'll find it as funny as possible!
But mostly, among all the stories I've written so far, I think that this is the best title I have ever found for a chapter and I'm kinda proud of that, lol!
Chapter XIV: Huey, Dewey and... Goofy.
As punctual as a Swiss watch, even more than that, Muse arrives to the airport, ready to take the flight to Chicago.
In order to will the time away, Chris has sneaked in a bookstore and after wandering for a quarter of an hour he seems to have found what he was looking for.
As a matter of fact, with a lot of interest, he flips though a book named '101 ways to understand a woman. And yet they won't be enough!'
Obviously, he still has to make his Kelly forgive him after their last phone call and he still keeps ignoring why, of course.
Dominic has taken company to him, but just due to the simple reason that the store has plenty of mirrors, too.
After trying unsuccessfully to mirror himself in the windowpane with the schedule of all the flights, he has just given in, searching for an easier and more comfortable way.
Matthew hasn't followed them, in order to look after their suitcases, mostly because a certain one of them needs extreme surveillance.
Yeah, because if on the one hand he's happy due to the fact that Dominic this time hasn't mistreated his trolley running madly with it everyway, on the other hand it seems that now the blond's utter indifference towards it is even more damaging.
As a matter of fact, he has seen him forsake the trolley in an undefined point of the airport in order to follow Chris.
Instinctively, the frontman has rushed over the eccentric object, with the same mental alertness of a Baywatch lifeguard rushing over a beautiful woman who is about to drawn.
And after that so heroic 'rescue', Matthew has kept his protégé safe with the other baggage.
Plus, the temporary absence of his friends lets Matt have the privacy he needs.
Taking advantage of that, Matthew sits on the floor, next to his trolley, almost staring into his eyes... if only trolley had eyes!
"Oh, my poor Pinkie, you seem to be so frustrated. I bet Dom isn't taking good care of you, is he? He doesn't feed you, right? He doesn't take you out for your daily walk. He doesn't play with you anymore and he never sings a song to you... well, on second thought, you should be glad for the last point!" Matthew comments in what is supposed to be just and only a monologue, but not for him, evidently.
Confirming that, he also pats affectionately his trolley, almost as if he wanted to comfort it.
"C'mon, Pinkie, hold on. It's just three more journeys to go, and then you'll come back to me. We're going to celebrate pwoperly. I'll buy you a new set of wheels, golden ones! Plus, I'll cover you with glitter, you'll look so wonderful with that! I'm already thinking about covering also one of my guitars with glitter, maybe the one who will behave in the best way. And, to be honest, I'm thinking about covering even myself with glitter. It sounds so tempting!" Matthew confesses.
"Yep. I agree. Glitter sounds so damn exciting!" Dom states, behind his back, lowering his sunglasses in order to look better at him.
Matthew jolts and gets up abruptly as he tries to deny the obvious, but he knows that there's nothing left to deny.
"Gee, Dom, how long have you been listening?" he asks him awkwardly.
"Long enough to establish that you're even crazier than I thought!" the blond chuckles.
"Hello? Words coming from the guy who always talks with mirrors!" the brunette strikes back.
"I don't talk with mirrors. I talk with my reflection and my reflection happens to be a wonderful listener!" the other justifies.
"By the way, you were in a store, in front of a mirror. Since when are *only fifteen minutes* enough for you?" Matt questions him, amazed.
"You're right, it's not enough. But since the shopper gave me this, I'm ok with it!" the other replies as he shows to him the film pack silver bookmark that has an inestimable mirror effect.
"What about Chris?" the singer changes topic.
"When I left him there, he was all engrossed flipping through the pages of a book named something like '101 ways to...'"
"To do what?'" Matt cuts him off, with a mischievous look.
"No, my dear, it's not what you think. It's just to understand a woman." Dominic informs him.
"Well, I should have expected that form a guy whose main priority whenever he comes back to his wife is play scrabble!" Matt comments as he rolls his eyes, before being enlightened by a naughty thought.
"Hey, Dommeh, maybe is there in that store also a book about 101 ways to do *that* kind of stuff?" he wonders as his eyes sparkle with lust.
"Oh, C'mon, Mattie, how can you think about such things?" the drummer replies as he pretends to be annoyed. "You have me. We don't need any stupid book!" he adds fiercely.
"So, you really know 101 way to..." Matthew peers at him as he gets closer to the blonde, longing as a predator.
"Maybe even more!" Dom declares, before his mate flings himself to him for a kiss that he breaks immediately.
"No, wait. We can't do that here. Not in front of Pinkie!" he grumbles as he parts from him.
"What?! Fucking news release, Matt: trolleys *don't have* fucking eyes!" Dom snaps.
"But..." it's all the other manages to say, staring at Dom, as upset as a child who has just been told that Santa Claus doesn't exist, and looking at his trolley with something that is very similar to ... guilty sense.
"I can't believe I'm doing this for real!" Dom hisses as he takes off his coat and places it on the trolley, in order to cover it.
"Pinkie can't see us anymore. Is it better now?" the blond rolls his eyes.
"Very much better!" the brunet smiles.
"There's only a problem now..." the other warns him. "You gotta warm me up!" he ends the sentence as he embraces himself, shivering due to the cold.
"Mm. I guess I can do that." the frontman murmurs as he hugs him from behind, before opening his coat and wrapping him inside that.
The blond moans content as he glances up in order to give him a kiss that this time he breaks first.
"Just tell me, Matt, what exactly does a trolley eat?" he asks him, amused.
"Oh, shut up!" Matt pushes him away.
"Make me!" Dom teases him as he gets closer to him again, in order to kiss him.
"Hey! You're not allowed to steal my sentences!" the brunette warns him, backing off, indignant.
"And you're not allowed to reject my kisses!" the blond summons him as he drags him to himself and smashes his lips against his, whatever he agrees or not.
And there's no need to say that Matthew does agree, a lot!
They get lost in their kiss, but not so much not to hear Chris coming from afar.
Luckily for them, he's still engrossed reading that book that by then has become a definitive purchase.
That gives Matthew and Dominic the time to part from each other and appear as nonchalant as possible, or at least try, since the best of their inventiveness makes them look at the wall, with a thoughtful attitude.
"Guys, I need your help. I don't know which to choose between 'Way number 9' and 'Way number 12', so far, and..." he exclaims , but he stops as soon as he lifts his gaze from the book and sees, but mostly listens to them.
"Yes, Matt, you're right. This wall is really ochre!" Dominic comments, as he pretends to ignore that his friend is there.
"Told you so. And it's such a horrible colour!" the other replies with the same nonchalance, as the blonde nods.
"Excuse me, what exactly are you supposed to be doing?" the bassist wonders, kind of puzzled.
"It looks obvious to me. We are just staring at the walls and commenting them!" the frontman explains calmly.
"It's a very normal daily activity!" the drummer adds.
"And why the hell did you even take off your coat?" their friend goes on with his inquisition.
"It looks obvious to me. I did it in order to concentrate better on the walls!" the blonde justifies promptly as he shrugs and put his coat back.
"You two have a very curious way to make things obvious!" Chris grumbles, more and more confused.
"Anyway guys, don't think I haven't noticed that. There's something seriously wrong with you..." he adds, immediately after, as he glares deplorably at them.
Dominic and Matthew gulp as they wait for the final verdict, since they're sure that their excuse was just too lame to be believable, so Chris must have found out everything.
"I mean, c'mon, how can you say that ochre is a horrible colour? Everyone knows that it will be the main protagonist of next Summer!" he scolds them and, hidden from Chris, they both sigh with relief.
And then they all walk towards their plane.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
They spend the rest of the day kinda serenely, among the take off, landing, hotel rooms and a little trip around that town but without overdoing, not to tire them too much since they have a gig the day after.
Although they have two different rooms plenty of every kind of comfort, for some strange reasons Matt and Dom have decided to share one together. Dom's one, for the record.
Since they had the flight on late afternoon, Chris hasn't taken his usual nap and they didn't get the chance to spend some time together in the proper way, so they want to make up for lost time.
They just have to never let Chris know about that, but by now they're more than expert in that field.
Plus, to share Dom's room for Matt means to get the chance to be closer to his Pinkie.
-----------------------------------------------------------
A few hours before the show begins, Muse are already at the Allstate Arena to rehearse, without caring about the fact that outside the crowd keeps inciting the My Chemical Romance to get out, calling every members' name out.
Matthew unashamedly ignores those people... or maybe he doesn't, since he has *casually* decided to perform a certain song from their new album that seems to invite them to burn in hell, over and over again... for their sins.
"Hey, Chris, speaking of Hell, you haven't set up another dinner with the My Terrible Lost Chance, have you?" Matt wonders at the end of that song.
"Hey! Their name is * My Chemical Romance* and you know that!" Dom corrects him, kinda rudely.
"Phew, I know, but the name I picked up is nicer and suits them better!" Matthew protests as he shrugs.
"Anyway, Bells, don't worry, there's no dinner and you're more than free to leave after our performance!" Chris informs him.
"Good to know. " Matthew rejoices and he pours his enthusiasm into the next song they play.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Ok, mister, what do you think you're doing?" Dominic exclaims, putting his hands on his hips with an annoyed look, as soon as he sees Matthew come in his dressing room.
"No, what do * you* think you're doing?" Matthew strikes back, mirroring both of his actions and words.
"Go change yourself!" Dom summons him.
"No, *you* go change yourself!" the other retorts.
"Fucking stop repeating my words!" the blond snaps.
"I'm not repeating them utterly. I place a 'No' at the beginning and I also emphasize the 'you' part!" the brunette points out.
"It's irritating anyway!" the other protests.
"Why didn't you ask me before?" Matt wonders.
"Since when the bloody hell am I supposed to ask you permission to dress myself?"
"From now on, since we ended up wearing the same outfit!" Matt answers back, pointing first at his Christian Dior red blouse with white borderlines and then at Dominic's one which is identical, but silver with black borderlines.
"So? Let's wear them both!" Dom suggests.
"Sure, alright, why not? And maybe we also should make Chris wear another one in a different colour and then change the name of our band from 'Muse' to 'Huey, Dewey and Louie'!" Matt snaps and then he notices that the blonde has become thoughtful.
"What? I was too harsh, wasn't I?" he gets concerned.
"No, it's just that 'Huey, Dewey and Louie' doesn't sound good. It's much better 'Huey, Dewey and... Goofy'!" the drummer suggests, thrilled.
"I can't still believe that we managed to turn all this stupid stuff into a real conversation. Anyway, why just 'Huey, Dewey and...Goofy'?" the singer gets curious.
"Well, to begin with, Chris is taller than us, just like Goofy is taller than Huey and Dewey. Plus, if he hasn't figured out yet what's going on between you and me... well, he is a little dupe as Goofy is!" Dom explains and they both chuckle, but Matt becomes serious almost immediately.
"Why? What's going on between you and me?" he wonders rhetorically as he steps closer to the blond, moving like a cat, before making him back off, until he gets him pinned against the wall.
"Why don't you tell me?" the blond teases him, as he has already trouble bearing that closeness without betraying himself.
"I can do much better. I'm gonna show you!" Matthew announces, before taking possession of his lips, kissing him with burning passion as their hands wander everywhere, eager to get a more satisfying contact.
It's just a matter of a bunch of seconds, before they both lower each other's zipper of their blouses.
"Hey! You don't wear anything under that!" Matt exclaims. Instead, he wears a white t-shirt, so tight-fitting that he seems to have bought it ... not exactly in the 'Man' department of that store.
"Yeah. So, see? This is a more reason why I can wear it and you can't!" Dominic states. "Unless you want me to go outside half-naked, letting the whole crowd free to stare at my exposed chest. I guess that it would please tons of girls... and maybe some guys, too!" Dominic winks at him.
"Never! Your chest belongs to me, just like the rest of your body!" Matt protests, almost growling, before covering that exposed skin with kisses, caresses, and some bites, too.
"Mm. You're kinda possessive, aren't you? I like that!" the blond stares at him suggestively as he licks his own lips.
"Don't tempt me, otherwise I could end up chaining you up!" Matt warns him as he draws little circles with his fingers around his so sensitive nipples.
"Uh! I'm liking that more and more and you should even..." the blond groans, but the brunette makes him shut up with another kiss, an almost violent one.
"Anyway, I can't get out without my blouse. It's fucking cold!" Matt complains as they both lift their zipper up.
"Wait. I have the solution!" he exclaims after a while, enlightened, before leaving the room
He comes back after a minute as he holds in his hands a black blouse with blue squares printed on it which make it futuristic and three-dimensional.
"You can wear this!" he comments as he throws it to him.
"Do you often bring with you extra blouses? " Dom wonders as he analyzes that garment.
"Just in case, but now it's turning very useful!" the other replies.
"Anyway, I can't wear it. See? It doesn't match at all!" the drummer makes him notice, pointing at his orange pants. "Instead, it looks just perfect on you. So * you* are gonna wear it!" he goes on, as he throws it back to its owner.
And as he looks at his black jeans, Matt has to admit that Dom is right.
"Fine. I'll wear it and you can keep on the bloody blouse!" the singer gives in, taking off his red blouse and putting on the black and blue one. "Why the bloody hell do you always win?" he snaps a second after.
"Because you love me and would do anything for me, wouldn't you?" the other strikes back, making him smile.
"That's true!" he whispers as he gets closer to him.
"So, do you really think that Huey and Dewey love each other?" he wonders as he plays with his blond hair.
"Of course they do. Do you have the slightest idea of how many times they have their fun during every camp meeting of the Junior Woodchucks? And Louie knows that and helps them hide that secret from everyone, although Donald Duck starts getting suspicious." Dom informs him, before they both burst out laughing madly.
"Gee, I hope that every kid will never ever hear about this very twisted, immoral and incestuous version of the Disney World!" Matt comments between laughs.
"Yeah. This is even worse than what we did to Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson!" Dominic adds, amused as well.
In that exact moment Chris bursts into the room as he raises up the famous book he bought at the airport, with a victory smile.
"I succeeded! Kelly and I made it up and now she is in love with me more than ever! Way Number 85 was bloody perfect!" the bassist cheers.
"Hey, why are you so amused?" he asks them immediately after.
"For no specific reasons. You know us, don't you? We were just mucking around and acting stupid, as always!" Matt shrugs.
"Yeah. Stupid me for asking. C'mon guy, let's just go, it's about time to make the show start!" the youngest guy states.
"As you wish... *Goofy*!" Dominic answers back as both he and Matt burst out laughing again, before leaving the room.
< Goofy?! > Chris repeats in his mind, dumbfound, as he scratches his head in confusion.
Deep down, maybe Matthew and Dominic have a point.
TBC
Notes:
Yes, I know, I know, poor Chris, I'm so terrible with him.
Well, on second thought, it's not that I treat Dom and Matt any better... lol!
As always, I hope you had fun reading this delirium.

short version | long version | youtube | spotify unwrapped
long version will lead you to the 165 song, 10 hour and 34 minute playlist which i’ve been slowly adding to since january. short version will lead you to what you see here. youtube will lead you to the playlist you see here but... wait for it... on youtube. mostly because i know not everyone has spotify. spotify unwrapped will lead you to a mixture of the long and the short version, which is pretty bloated with austin wintory songs because those are what i listen to when i write or read usually.
the long version is much improved in length from last year, which was 261 songs and 17 hours, but that’s mostly because august through december i was pretty bad at keeping track of the music that caught my attention. whoops.
and under the cut is me ranting about music, like usual. enjoy!
i. dark night || philip sheppard *instrumental*
This was my absolute favorite from the Detroit: Become Human soundtrack. I tended to prefer Kara’s songs most because they were gorgeous and haunting and just plain fantastic. Connor’s songs were mostly listened to while writing for the fandom, but Kara’s songs were what I kept coming back to. ii. curse of the i-5 corridor || neko case So I left home and faked my ID I fucked every man that I wanted to be
Sometime in January, I fell in love with eighteen wheels on an uphill climb, which was a 91k hank/connor wip by blackeyedblonde. Hank’s a trucker. Connor occasionally dabbles in sex work to keep himself alive and moving. But like, it’s so much more than that? Anyway, at some point the author linked to this song. I think it may have been on tumblr, but I fell in love with it and neko case.
iii. way down we go || kaleo Oh, 'cause they will run you down, down 'til the dark Yes and they will run you down, down 'til you fall And they will run you down, down 'til you go Yeah, so you can't crawl no more
Speaking of Detroit: Become Human (sensing a theme?), this fanvideo is one of my favorite things in the world. I had it and a couple other fantastic videos like it playing in the background while writing for the fandom. This video, in fact, is what finally made me go in search of the game. iv. almost (sweet music) || hozier The same kind of music haunts her bedroom I'm almost me again, she's almost you Wasteland, Baby was a thing that happened to me. Which would have already been enough to get it on this list, but I also listened to it on repeat while writing my first DBH fic. v. dancing in a room || ezi I know you notice, notice me I might be broken but it's not showing It's how I'm copin', copin' I don’t actually remember where this one came from. I know that sometime when March is still a bit cold, I listened to a playlist on spotify that I can’t find for the life of me. It had a lot of the songs that are about to come up on it, and before I started exclusively listening to audiobooks while I got ready for work in the morning, I listened to random fantastic playlists. vi. epic (pt ii) || anais mitchell & justin vernon And suddenly Hades was only a man with a taste of nectar upon his lips
Hadestown was also a thing that happened to me. This song makes me fucking weak. All of the lyrics are great, the whole song is gorgeous and haunting and so perfect it hurts, but those lyrics above are just *chefs kiss* vii. spanish sahara || foals Forget the horror here Leave it all down here It's future rust and it's future dust
Sometime during the spring, I played Life Is Strange and had a million and one feelings. I played both options for the ending and each one was gut wrenching in its own way. I think I still prefer the one where Chloe lives, but this song has literally haunted me ever since.
viii. obstacles || syd matters Someday we will foresee obstacles Through the blizzard, through the blizzard And this is the song that plays if you make the other choice. Again, SUPER TRAGIC, but also you know. You get to keep your girlfriend. ix. tom thumb || bitter ruin And I know I'll be burnt, but I can stand a flame or two to catch you
This was one of the songs that I discovered on the mysterious spotify playlist! Something I’d forgotten: I discovered Hadestown off of that playlist. Thanks, mystery playlist. You gave me all the ear worms. x. wolves of the revolution || the arcadian wild You're trapped inside of your own heart It's a spectators sport, just play your part You guessed it - from the mystery playlist. They’re all very reminiscent of the Hadestown soundtrack. Vaguely eerie, kind of haunting, a lot beautiful. Makes you feel like you’re a forest creature living on the edge of the swamp. You know: the aesthetic. xi. epic (pt iii) || anais mitchell & justin vernon Where is the treasure inside your chest? Where is your pleasure? Where is your youth? Where is the man with his hat in his hands? Who stands in the garden with nothing to lose I thought about only including this one instead of including part 2, but in the end I loved both too much to choose. Hadestown, man. I hope it comes to Ohio at some point in the near future. xii.  the spine || darren korb & ashley barrett Fingers tied themselves in knots around the heart It beats in time I see the spine of the world
I have never actually played Transistor, which is fucking tragic because I listened to basically the entire soundtrack over and over again for the entire year. There’s at least one more song from the game on this list, but it is really wonderful. Haunting vocals, perfect for writing or reading or driving.  xiii. don’t think twice || hikaru utada I'm only crying 'cause I never dreamed It'd take this long, it'd take this long Hi, I played Kingdom Hearts 3 this year. And I cried so fucking much. I had some issues with the game, namely how the ending was such a clusterfuck of boss fight after boss fight and emotional character arc resolutions so it all felt kind of rushed? But the gameplay was superb, the selfie thing was ingenious, and I did cry at least six different times while I was stressing my way through fighting boss fights with blurry eyes. xiv. face my fears || hikaru utada Oh, let me face, let me face, let me face my fears Won't be long, won't be long, I'm almost here Watch me cry all my tears
So like, if you care at all you’ve probably already seen it, but the opening cutscene of KH3 was to Face My Fears, and I’m gonna be real honest here - I didn’t like it at first. I moaned and groaned about Skrillex and how it was nothing like Simple and Clean or Passion/Sanctuary. But it grew on me to the point that it was actually my most listened to song this year. Watch me cry all my tears, indeed. xv. waves || chloe moriondo Make me into more than a goner Perhaps a little bit stronger Thicker skin, less needy, And maybe to not bruise so damn easily, but you can't
I don’t remember where I found this song either? Maybe mystery playlist but probably not. Either way, it’s pretty and uh, I too want to slow the world down. xvi. ashes || bear mccreary -instrumental- Man, oh man, let’s talk about how good of a game God of War was. It was so good, guys. The game play was excellent, the world was gorgeous, and the storyline was interesting. And the music went so, so hard. Between Horizon Zero Dawn and the new God of War, I have basically been ruined for all other games. Also, dad protagonists, am I right? xvii. wake up, moving on || kevin penkin -instrumental-
Did not actually realize this was part of a soundtrack to a game? But it’s very lilty. Has that French quirky romcom vibe to it and I listened to the crap out of it in early summer. xviii. paper boats || darren korb & ashley barrett The river always finds the sea So helplessly Like you find me
Another Transistor song. I really love Ashley Barrett’s voice. I should probably at some point play the game. xix. call off your ghost || dessa I hope she makes you happy It's just a lot to ask to watch your future walking past me
This song played during one of the weather segments of Welcome to Night Vale and made me remember how much I absolutely adore Dessa. Her voice is fantastic and I love the way that her songs flow. Also, this song gives me personal feels. xx. power over me || dermot kennedy I wanna be king in your story I wanna know who you are I want your heart to beat for me I have absolutely no idea where I heard this one. It might have been playing on the radio while I was driving somewhere? I played it a lot during the summer.  xxi. a future for the krogan || christopher lennertz -instrumental- It’s been a while since I played Mass Effect, but this song came up on a writing playlist and I have been listening to it ever since.
xxii. mine || bazzi Running circles 'round my mind Even when it's rainy all you ever do is shine
Shrug emoji.
xxiii. bite || charlie cunningham Stone cold faces let you keep you poisoning your blood Cut you open then you'll see poison in your blood
Also shrug emoji? Most of the time when I’m doing these there’s fandom connatations to half the songs, but these year I wasn’t heavily invested in a whole lot of fandoms so these are mostly just songs I listened to while I was a) driving, b) in the shower, or c) while reading.
xxiv. wait for me || andre de shields Ain't no compass, brother, there ain't no map Just a telephone wire and the railroad track Keep on walking and you don't look back
And here’s the last Hadestown song on the list. It’s just... really good, okay. Really, really good. xxv. birds || imagine dragons & elisa Seasons, they will change Life will make you grow Dreams will make you cry, cry, cry
I think there’s been an Imagine Dragons song on here every year since they came out with Radioactive. This is the only song of theirs I heard this year, but pairing their voice with Elisa’s was fucking genius because this song makes me feel the chorus in my soul. xxvi. crazy || patsy cline You'd love me as long as you wanted And then some day You'd leave me for somebody new I was at a bar, and my friend has just announced that he was getting married to his girlfriend of ten years in Vegas, on a ferris wheel, by an Elvis impersonator. We started listening to Elvis songs to figure out what he’d play, and then we got distracted listening to a bunch of old love songs. This one is more heartbreak than love, but I’ve always loved Patsy’s voice. xxvii. bury a friend || billie eilish Bury a friend, try to wake up
I was really slow to the Billie Eilish train. One of my friends recommended her music and it’s just so chaotic and fantastic that I can’t believe I didn’t fall for it earlier. This song in particular was a Billy Hargrove song for a while.
xxviii. the seed || aurora Feed me sunlight, feed me air In a place where nothing matters Feed me truth and feed me prayer Aurora’s got one of those truly lovely voices. Also I like songs about how the earth should eat humanity.
xxix.  eleventh dimension || julian casablancas 'Cause no one really cares or wonders why anymore Oh, I got music, coming out of my hands and feet and kisses
Back in 2011, when I was still watching Doctor Who, someone made this video which blew my little heart away. I rediscovered this song while we were driving back to Ohio from our annual beach trip and managed to get everyone in the car hooked on it for weeks afterwards.
xxx. sunflower || post malone You're a sunflower I think your love would be too much
Into the Spiderverse! Was so! Good!
xxxi. what’s up danger || blackway, black caviar I like it all on the edge just like you, ayy I like tall buildings so I can leap off of 'em
So like, that scene, right? The one that had everyone losing their collective shit? I saw gifs before I watched the movie, and goddamn, it lived up to every single expectation I ever had. I made Nick watch it with me, and he groaned a lot because honestly he is not the biggest fan of super hero movies, but even he admitted that it was the best damn Spiderman movie we’d ever seen. It was powerful and clever and heartwarming and funny and the music and animation were both fan-freaking-tastic.
xxxii. bad guy || billie eilish I'm the bad guy, duh Can you believe that I actually didn’t know about this video until @nijuukoo did art? I mean, I’d definitely heard it and liked it before hand, but the fucking video, man. That pic of Vanitas showering Ven in hearts is still the background of my desktop.(It would have been the one of him sitting on Ansem while he’s doing push ups, but it didn’t work with my screen)
xxxiii. elevate || dj khalil I jump off this building to save these civilians My strength and my honor is trusted by children I'm ready and willing to fight all these villains No chaos or killings, my style is so brilliant I really, really liked the music to Into the Spiderverse.
xxxiv. must’ve been || chromeo I must've been high when I met you Out of my mind when I decided to love you
There was a Harringrove fic that I read during the summer that made the connection between this song and modern AU Billy and Steve. I thought it was @lymricks but maybe not. Either way - I listened to this for like three weeks straight while reading about Billy and Steve flirting at the pool. Ha! Found it - you, through half-shut eyes by @brawlite.
xxxv. dark matter || les friction Bring me your soul, bring me your hate In my name you will create Bring me your fear, bring me your pain You will destroy in my name
There was an Outsider fanvid. I tripped over it.
xxxvi. lark of my heart || eliza rickman Lark of my heart - dance in the dark and say you love me Lark of my heart - right from the start and say you love me
This one was another that I found on a random playlist while I was reading and I just love the rhythm of the song. I sat right up and favorited that sucker before I lost it.
xxxvii. dancing on my own — robyn I'm just gonna dance all night I'm all messed up, I'm so outta line Stilettos on broken bottles I'm spinning around in circles Okay. Okay, okay, okay. So there was that tumblr post that went around a while back where a bunch of subway riders who just got back from a Robyn concert started singing while waiting for the train and I just. It makes me so fucking happy. Like, I remember the night I clicked on that video. I’d never heard the song before, but I didn’t need to because the level of fucking joy and unity in that video literally brought tears to my eyes. Sometimes, humans are fucking beautiful.
xxxviii. hungover in the city of dust || autoheart We’re hungover in the city of dust So let our minds run round in circles While we figure it all out
I really adore autoheart. They did Sailor Song, which was on my Top Songs post last year and honestly, according to the plays on spotify, probably should have still been on my list this year, but alas - this is the abridged version. Every song I’ve heard from them I’ve loved. The entire bridge makes me shiver, it’s just so wonderfully executed.
xxxix. season of the witch || lana del rey You've got to pick up every stitch, The rabbits running in the ditch, Oh no, must be the season of the witch In October I watched Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and it was super spooky and really great and probably one of the best movies I saw this year? But like, also this cover by Lana del Rey was the best damn thing about it. Someone made a witchy video that was great too but I can’t find it now. xl. bird song || juniper vale Listen to the sound of my heart beat slow Yeah, my heart's like yours, my heart's like yours Listen to the sound, oh it feels like home When our hearts beat slow together
I really like Juniper Vale. I found them last year when I stumbled across their cover of Singing In The Rain, and they churn out some really quality music.
xli. paradise valley || honey & the sting So you'll have to hold me down Could you just hold me down build the levees higher This song was always going to make it to 2019′s list too. It’s just too damn good. Thank you, Wolf 359. You’ve given me a gift that is still giving three years later.
xlii. my hallelujah || autoheart Thought I found a new religion In you who was I kidding There's nowhere to go Except for under quarantine
More Autoheart! Just listen to that melody! That flow!
xliii. furthest star || dirt poor robins We'll find our hiding place Clear across the Milky Way Beyond the galaxy On the furthest star that we see
This song reminds me a lot of Muse back in their early days. I was half-napping on the couch listening to, you guessed it, a random playlist on spotify, and I liked this song enough to surface from the edges of slumber to favorite it so I could find it again.
xliv. play dirty || kevin mcallister Would you get the Devil this dance? Would you be a part of his plans? Now you got some blood on your hands
There was a fanvid. It was good and basically caught me up on Preacher. The song is also really catchy.
xlv. it’s quiet uptown || kelly clarkson Look at where we are Look at where we started Last year, this was on my list because of an EOS 10 playlist. This year it’s on my list because I still fucking love it. Also I saw Hamilton this year and it was really phenomenal. I cannot get over how good it was.
xlvi. pas de deux || michael abels -instrumental- I watched Us in late October/early November and this entire sequence was really lovely and eerie and just all around fantastic. I loved the mirroring throughout the movie, and it all came together in this stunning confrontation.

About a month ago I got to see Les Mis in theater and I cried like six or seven times. That is not an exaggeration I was a fucking mess. As much as I’ve adored every musical I have seen up until this point, I have never had a musical affect me the way this one did. It was incredibly powerful and the experience was worth every damn cent.

Welcome to the 19th instalment of the “Garmsman Dozen” question and answer session. The response so far has been tremendous. Did you miss earlier ones? There are links at the end of the page.
This week we welcome to the Garmsman Dachi from the UK!
Name: Dachi, 32
Instagram: @nei.nor
Location: I grew up in Denmark/Georgia, but I now live in Brighton, England.
Job: I’m an economic and policy analyst.
Hobbies: I spend my free time listening to podcasts, leather craft, vintage watches, basketball and [mostly vintage] menswear.
#gallery-0-21 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-21 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-21 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-21 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
  1. Thinking back to your childhood, what were your most memorable or favourite clothes?
I’ve gone through various ‘phases’, like most people. In my teens (early 2000s), I used to go to a charity shop near my school. That’s probably where I bought the clothes I remember most fondly. Some of the best stuff I bought there included a pair of dark navy, high-waisted, double pleated turn-ups and a maroon velvet blazer. I wore it a lot it with a white Kangol flat cap, a white shirt and a striped blue tie. I was 15 or 16, and I thought I looked like Samuel L. Jackson or one of those cool jazz musicians I saw on the covers of my grandad’s LP collection. The reality was, no doubt, quite different…
2. How would you describe your style today, and what are your influences?
In terms of what I wear casually, I think it’s definitely rooted in traditional Americana, heritage style and workwear but I like to mix ‘genres’ and incorporate contemporary stuff as well.
I also really like seeing how women wear menswear and vintage menswear, in particular. I think they often put together colours and silhouettes that men typically wouldn’t.
#gallery-0-22 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-22 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-22 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-22 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
3. When looking for clothes, what factors play into your selections?
It depends on whether I’m buying vintage or contemporary stuff.
With vintage, it’s a ‘crap shoot’ and you’re usually limited by what’s available. So, I don’t tend to look for very specific things. I mainly care about whether something just strikes me as aesthetically pleasing, whether it has an interesting history and whether it fits me well. I don’t care as much about the brand, quality or even whether I ‘need’ it. So with vintage, I could have all the intentions of finding the perfect pair of vintage Chuck Taylors, but end up buying a random summer camp sweatshirt instead – much to the dismay of my wife…
When it comes to modern stuff, I tend to be a lot more focused and picky, especially about the ethics of the production. I’m mainly drawn to micro/small brands, where you know there’s, at most, a couple of people that run the business or possibly even make the goods. I love brands like Tender co., Dawson Denim and S.E.H Kelly. I’m also really interested in the increasing number of brands that are trying to produce more basic, quality garments through ethical means at an affordable price point. I think Community Clothing really stands out when it comes to this.
4. Most garmsmen will have a few “grail items” in their collection. Not to out you, but if your house is burning, which garments do you grab?
It would probably be my granddad’s old cardigan. It’s a terrible piece of clothing. It has completely lost its shape. It is made from Soviet wool, which is itchier than a tropical fungal infection, but it has sentimental value. That, and my granddad’s old watch – which in ‘mechanical watch terms’ is potentially worse than the cardigan. But again, I’d hate to ever lose it.
5. What would you never wear?
I’ve been breaking this rule recently, but generally, I never wear anything black. Growing up in Eastern Europe and Scandinavia, black/grey was everywhere and wearing colours was seen as ‘garish’ or ‘feminine’. So in the teenage rebellion phase of my life (which, so far, has lasted into my early 30s), I’ve actively avoided wearing black and instead ‘pranced around’ and embraced colours.
6. Do you have a dream garment you’d love to own?
I’m desperately looking for the perfect vintage bowling shirt with a contrast colour. Ideally, in pink. Do drop me a DM, if you have one 😉
#gallery-0-23 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-23 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-23 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-23 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
7. Do you have any style icons, historic or current?
I grew up watching Jean-Paul Belmondo (aka. “the real Steve McQueen”) and Indiana Jones. So as a kid, I was obsessed with that sort of ‘refined rugged’ look. Then in my teens, I was really into “The Fresh Prince” and Andre 3000.
In recent years, I’ve been really into styles that blend vintage Americana and workwear with more contemporary stuff. I really like Macklemore, but John Mayor is probably the undisputed king.
On the more formal side, I really want to be Patrick Grant when I grow up. I think Jason Jules is always spot on, and I’d love to smoke cigarettes like Ethan Newton.
8. If your clothes need repairs or alterations, do you do it yourself?
Yes. I think everyone should try to do the basic alterations. It makes you appreciate your clothes more, saves you money and makes you popular with your partner…
9. Do you make any of your own clothes?
Yes, I have made a couple of things for myself and it’s something I want to do much more of. I made a noragi style jacket and I’ve made a skirt and a pair of trousers for my wife as well.
So I’ve not quite converted a tent or a pair of trousers into a waistcoat yet – but the contestants on the Great British Sewing Bee better watch out in 2035!
10. How do you see your style evolving going forwards?
I think the beautiful thing about vintage clothing is that you can always ‘upgrade’ your clothes over time. So for example, I have a lovely vintage G1 leather jacket currently, but I’d eventually like to find an even better one someday. So I think I’ll probably end up having mostly similar stuff, but hopefully ‘better’ versions of the same garments over time.
#gallery-0-24 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-24 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-24 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-24 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
11. How do you think trends such as denim and heritage style will evolve and survive? What will be the next big thing?
Niel Bohr once said, “Prediction is very difficult, especially if it’s about the future”. As an analyst, I’m very conscious that any prediction I make will definitely be wrong. BUT I did predict that fanny packs/bum bags would be a thing again a few years ago – even before Joe Rogan did….so let me have a go.
In general, I think transparency and ethics will continue to become ever more important, especially now that it’s increasingly clear it doesn’t have to come at a massive premium.
Within the sub-genres of menswear that I care most about, heritage/rugged/vintage etc., I think we’ve hit peak ‘ruggedness’. I accept that some people will always insist on wearing 28oz denim, but the exaggerated focus on everything always needing to be completely over-engineered, I think, will slowly give way to a more pragmatic appreciation for comfort and style. That doesn’t mean quality won’t matter but I think it means ‘ultimate ruggedness’ won’t unquestionably equal ‘ultimate product’. The watch equivalent is a shift from chunky Panerais and Submarines to more streamlined Reversos and vintage Omega Seamasters.
I think menswear is too serious and focused on trying to rationally or objectively assess style at the moment. On Instagram, I’ve been joking a lot about how I’m ‘prancing’ with my clothes. I don’t think we should return to the peacocking of the French royal courts of Louis XIV, but I do think there’s an attempt to bring too much science and not enough art into style currently. There’s a lot of this in the various menswear forums, which seem to have become echo chambers with people taking things a little too seriously. I think this probably comes from the legacy of traditional rules of tailoring, but also just from some sort of uneasiness by many men to generally embrace things at a purely aesthetic level. However, I think the pendulum is slowly swinging the other way and I think it’ll make things more fun.
Thank you, Dachi!

The Long Century Tarot is an indie tarot deck WIP created by me, Bridget, a historian and very-much-not-an-artist :)
The Long Nineteenth Century refers to the years between 1789 and 1914 (at least according to historian Eric Hobsbawm and my favourite history prof, so that’s what I’m rolling with). In other words, it began with the French Revolution, and closed with the beginning of the Great War. It was a period of rapid technological change, increasing interconnectedness (for better or for worse), and social upheaval. It’s also just my favourite period to study, and that’s a good enough reason to make a tarot deck right :p
The Major Arcana of this deck is done in colour, and the names of the cards are all changed to cultural concepts from the long century. The Roman numerals are still included, though, so you can remember which card it is!
The suits are all done in black and white. Each card from Ace to Ten is represented by a person who was active during this period whose story fits the traditional archetype. Coins become Sovereigns, who are people who use their resources to lead others. Wands become Warriors, who are people who use their passion to fight politically, socially, or militarily. Swords become Scholars, who use their knowledge to change the world. Cups become Creators, who shape culture by producing art.
The court cards are images of 2+ people, because there are too many cool photos of multiple people to pass over! I have tried to make these names as gender-neutral as possible, because the important bit is the personality, and not the gender. Pages are Apprentices, Knights are Explorers, Queens are Guides, and Kings are Governors. Anyone can be any of these things if they put their minds to it!
I am doing my best not to make this deck too Britain/USA-centric, and that’s part of the reason it’s taking so long (sometimes it’s also difficult to locate open-source images of individuals, and I’m not here for that ripping-off-people’s-work thing).
I hope you’ll follow along and learn some history with me! Feel free to let me know if you have questions or suggestions for cards!
Major Arcana
0 The Flâneur (The Fool)
VI The Boston Marriage (The Lovers)
VII The Bicycle (The Chariot)
VIII The Olympics (Strength)
IX Isolationism (The Hermit)
X Revolution (The Wheel)
XIII The Epidemic (Death)
XIV The Temperance Movement (Temperance)
XV The Gold Rush (The Devil)
XVI The Eruption (The Tower)

Nine of Creators, Osman Hamdi Bey
Scholars (Swords)
Five of Scholars, Ada Lovelace
Seven of Scholars, Lin Zexu
Apprentices of Scholars, Anandi Gopal Joshi, Okami Keiko, and Sabat Islambouli
Sovereigns (Pentacles)
Four of Sovereigns Louis Riel
Five of Sovereigns Queen Liliʻuokalani
Governors of Sovereigns, Queen Wilhelmina and Princess Juliana
-AND- The card back! A low-key shoutout to Bicycle Playing Cards, which started in 1885 :P
This list will be updated as new cards are released!
If you would be interested in potentially buying a deck (or a copy of the major arcana) let me know! I would like to have this finished by the end of 2018, which is probably wishful thinking, but if there’s enough interest it would be neat to do a little run of decks!

Notes taken during Super Bowl LII
KITTEN AND PUPPY BOWLS
Is this the first-ever Kitten Bowl to go to overtime? Tied at 28. Feline Manning throws deep. Macaroni grabs it in the end zone. Touchdown! 34-28 Panthers, final score.
I've never thought much of Feline Manning in the regular season, but you can't argue with his results in the Kitten Bowl.
There's a new Puppy Bowl stadium? This is embarrassing. The taxpayers are getting fleeced again.
OH HELL YES. THE REFEREE AT PUPPY BOWL IS A SLOTH.
Tumblr media
Update: Puppy Bowl is tied at 14 after a quarter. It's anybody's game.
Dammit. Should have called it a pupdate.
Puppy Bowl is 24-21 in the second quarter. It's quickly becoming apparent that dogs can't play defense.
Pupdate: Fluff 28, Ruff 24. Presumably, we're deep into the second quarter.
Now it's 31-28 Ruff. Still in the second quarter. I'm sure Puppy Bowl XIV is on track to destroy the all-time record for total points scored in a single game.
Last second touchdown! Fluff pulls off a 52-47 win over Ruff!
PREGAME
Okay, I've got a beer, dinner is on its way, and I'm settling in to finish this project. The only reason I've finished this is that I'm a stubborn SOB. This hasn't been fun for about 6-7 months now.
A feature about Tom Brady's mom. She had cancer in 2016 and was only able to be at one of his games, Super Bowl LI. A nice story.
Oh, cool, now Dan Patrick asked Brady when he knew he could be great. It's no longer a heartwarming story about his mom, now it's about slurping on Brady.
Patrick comparing Brady to Michael Jordan. Brady says he doesn't think about that very often. Could never be compared to his childhood heroes.
Brady has no idea how he'll fill the void when he retires. Maybe coach his kids. He's happy his kids are old enough to see him play. His son didn't pick him in fantasy football. Took Cam Newton instead.
You know what NBC should do more of? Talk about Tom Brady. I wonder where they rank him on the all-time list.
Now it's a feature about the Eagles defense. Not a ton of big names, says Chris Long, but they have a bunch of good players.
And then they end it with more about Tom Brady. Good. More of that, please. I never get sick of it.
One thing I've noticed, in watching all these Super Bowls, is that the team with the better defense wins more often than you'd expect. If one team is offense-reliant and the other is defense-reliant, the defensive team wins a bunch of games. That would be the Eagles here.
Rodney Harrison: Patriots will run short passes and screen passes to avoid the Eagle pass rush.
Commercials. Zelle. Applebees has a quesadilla burger. George Washington crossing the Delaware Turnpike for Geico. Turbotax. Promo for a new NBC series, Good Girls. It's not about puppers, unfortunately. Promo for the Olympics.
NBC bumps in with a bunch of sound bites from Eagles and Patriots fans. The Patriots remain the worst. I hope this old guy gets to see an Eagles championship.
Rodney Harrison: Tom Brady gave me a hug, told me he loves me, and gave me a little wink. I've seen that wink before. That means he's going to have a big game.
Dungy and John Harbaugh talk about how loose and calm the Eagles seem. Harrison says the Patriots need to come out and start fast. Can't fall behind the Eagles like they did last year against Atlanta.
Harrison picks the Patriots. Harbaugh picks the Eagles, says they'll hold New England under 24. Dungy picks the Eagles, says he's fallen in love with Nick Foles. Dan Patrick doesn't pick anybody. It's good to be the host.
Commercials: HQ trivia. You can watch the game in Spanish on Universo. Local ad for Tim Hortons. Local ad for Columbus Cyberknife prostate cancer treatment. State Farm insurance. State of Ohio PSA saying you shouldn't drive drunk. YoutubeTV. The commercial for Youtube TV includes a bunch of NBC programming.
Time for the "Youtube TV kickoff show". Starts with a Carrie Underwood song. Great. This is where I need a fast forward button.
There's a rap breakdown in the middle of this Underwood song. They show Super Bowl legends including Roger Staubach during that part of the song. Staubach has been one of my absolute favorite players to watch in these Super Bowls, but he is the least "hip hop" person on earth.
Al Michaels: This is a league built for parity and the Patriots are on the cusp of their sixth championship in 17 years. Eagles have a history of success, but have never won a Super Bowl.
Cris Collinsworth: Everybody knows Tom Brady, but not Nick Foles. But Foles is capable of having a tremendous game. Had one of the greatest seasons in NFL history in 2013. Chip Kelly says you're welcome.
Commercials: A really long commercial for Mass Mutual that involves people singing a Pretenders song. Red Sparrow.
Eagles walk out to the field. NBC runs a montage of their players introducing themselves. "Donnie Bag of Bones Jones" is the punter.
Patriots now. "Chris Hogan, Penn State lacrosse." I wouldn't want to be associated with their football program either. (Also, he didn't play football in college.)
It's very clear very early who the fans in the stadium want to win. The Patriots are loudly booed as they take the field.
Commercials: Kraft, US Bank, Mercedes Benz, Terrell Owens for Pizza Hut, Winter Olympics Promo.
Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. J.J. Watt, unsurprisingly. He did a ton of work to raise money for hurricane relief after Houston got leveled.
America The Beautiful. Leslie Odom Jr. I genuinely have no clue who this person is. He can sing, though. He nails it.
It turns out Leslie Odom Jr. played Aaron Burr in Hamilton. This would explain why I don't know who he is.
The Star Spangled Banner. Pink. She also nails it.
Commercials. I spaced out and may have missed one. The Quiet Place. Lionel Richie for TD Ameritrade. Big Mac.
Michaels: What's the most likely way the Eagles win this game? Collinsworth: The offensive line and defensive line. They need to be able to run the ball and they need to be able to pressure Brady without blitzing him. It's hard to imagine that this game could come down to anything other than Tom Brady.
Coin toss: Medal of Honor winners. Very cool. Herschel "Woody" Williams will toss the coin. Won the Medal of Honor for valor at the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.
The referee called him Willie Williams. Oof.
Now he called him Corporal Wilson.
Eagles call tails. It's heads. Patriots defer, Eagles will receive.
Michele Tafoya: Eagles coach Doug Pederson told Nick Foles "You're not Tom Brady. Be Nick."
Commercials. I spaced out again. Is there a new Jurassic Park movie? There was a thing for that. Also YouTube TV.
NBC bumps in from commercial with a bunch of sound bites from past Super Bowl heroes. Staubach, Namath, Hines Ward.
Tumblr media
FIRST QUARTER
Okay, kickoff time
Line-drive kickoff. Clement takes it out to the 25.
First play, pass right to Agholor. 5 yard gain.
Agholor for 2 more yards on second down. Michaels says Foles completed 15 passes in a row at the end of the NFC championship game. It's 17 in a row now.
18 in a row. Foles buys time on third down and hits Alshon Jeffery for 15 yards or so.
Tumblr media
Well, there's an incomplete pass. Torrey Smith can't come up with the ball on a 2nd and 12 downfield pass.
Smith more than makes up for the incompletion - goes up the ladder to make a 15 yard catch on 3rd and 12. Eagles approaching field goal range.
Eagles running a bunch of "RPO" plays. (Run-pass option.) Ajayi runs for six on first down. Next play is a screen pass to Corey Clement. Takes it to the New England 5. The Patriots were blitzing and got burned. First and goal.
2nd and goal from the 2. False start on tight end Zach Ertz. Ouch. Offensive penalties inside the 5 are brutal.
Yep, that false start penalty was a killer. After incomplete passes on second down and third down, the Eagles will attempt a field goal.
Got it. A chip shot field goal ends a 14-play game opening drive. 3-0 Eagles. NBC bumps out to commercial with "The Underdog" by Spoon, which is cool.
Commercials: Toyota supports the Paralympics. Sprint has a Westworld parody
Eagles kick off. It's a touchback. Then more commercials.
Commercials: Solo, a Star Wars story. With Donald Glover! Nothing brings it down quite like Dr. Oz in the next commercial. Ugh. Go away. Turkish Airlines. He is Turkish, so there's that. Promo for a new show called Rise. Looks like a musical. Great.
Stop me if you've heard this before. Brady completes a short, outside pass to James White for a first down. 15 yards. Next play is a pass to James White. Because all he does is catch passes in the Super Bowl. That play's wiped out after a 12 men on the field penalty on the defense.
Brady to Chris Hogan underneath, coming across the middle, for a gain of 28. They're inside the Philadelphia 30. Next play is an end around to Hogan for four yards.
Brady to Gronkowski coming across the middle. Another completion, another first down at the 14.
Oh, hey, it's a completion to James White. Gains six yards, down to the 8.
NBC is using a white line to mark the line of scrimmage which is horrible and I hate it. I can't tell which is the line of scrimmage and which is the 10 yard line. Brady throws behind Gronk on third down and the Patriots settle for a Gostkowski field goal attempt.
Yup. 26 yard field goal for Gostkowski. 3-3, late first quarter.
Commercials: Bud Light with a Dilly Dilly ad that I've seen before. M&Ms. The red M&M turns into Danny Devito, who walks down the streets of New York asking if people want to eat him. Promo for the halftime show. Justin Timberlake. Winter Olympics promo.
Tumblr media
Kenjon Barner with a decent kickoff return. Kenjon is my dude. Thrilled that he's had an NFL career. Incredibly cool guy.
Big, big run for another Duck, LaGarrette Blount. 36 yard rumble into New England territory. Collinsworth says the Patriots asked Blount to take a pay cut, he said no, and went to the Eagles.
TOUCHDOWN! Foles deep to Alshon Jeffery, who makes an incredible grab in the end zone.
Ugh, they blew the extra point. 9-3 Eagles.
A good article about Barner. He studied, among other things, ballet dancing at Oregon.
Commercials: Ram trucks, Wendy's. Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
HEY, JEFFERY. NICE CATCH, JEFFERY.
youtube
Commercials: A Hulu show from Stephen King and J.J. Abrams. Heroes Arena mobile game. Olympics promo.
The Patriots look very human at this point. Which, yeah, it's the first quarter of the Super Bowl. Gronk false start, Brady overshoots Hogan, and it's 3rd and 7.
Hey, you guys? You might want to cover Danny Amendola. Amendola is wide open deep and Brady hits him. First down at the Philadelphia 29.
Collinsworth: Eagles defense led the league in highest percentage of threes-and-out in the regular season, but they're struggling with New England's fast-paced offense.
First quarter ends. Philadelphia 9, New England 3.
Commercials: Peter Dinklage for Doritos. Morgan Freeman for Mountain Dew Ice. Both are lip-synching rap songs. David Harbour for Tide. Skyscraper starring Dwayne Johnson.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
289 yards of total offense in the first quarter between the two teams.
Tumblr media
SECOND QUARTER
Third down, Brandin Cooks on a jet sweep. Tries to jump over a tackler but can't get that done.
New England botches a field goal attempt. Holder drops the ball, Gostkowski has to stop, then start, then drills it into the left upright. Big break for Philadelphia.
Foles with a nice move to avoid a sack on third and long. Probably could run for a first down but throws to Ertz. Incomplete. Donnie Bag of Bones Jones to punt.
Fair catch at the 37.
Commercials: Another Dilly Dilly ad for Bud Light. ETrade. A movie. I was looking away. Mission Impossible? Is there one of those? Olympics promo. After the game, "This is Us".
Brady to Cooks downfield for 23. Gets absolutely annihilated by Malcolm Jenkins and he's not moving. There was a bit of helmet-to-helmet contact. Commercial time.
Commercials: Rocket Mortgage. Avocados from Mexico. The Cloverfield Paradox.
We're back from commercial. Cooks has been taken to the locker room. There was no penalty on the hit because he was a runner and not defenseless.
Third down, the Patriots run a reverse/throwback play, a pass to Tom Brady. Incomplete - Brady dropped the ball. They go for it on 4th and 5 from the 35. Incomplete pass. Turnover on downs.
Commercials. Diet Coke with Mango, Jeep, Tide, WeatherTech. Halftime show promo.
Michaels: Patriots DB Malcolm Butler has played zero defensive snaps today. The team says it's "a coach's decision".
Tumblr media
Foles downfield to Zach Ertz, First down at the New England 43.
Great throw and catch from Foles to Jeffery downfield. 22 yard gain.
Tumblr media
Next play, LaGarrette Blount! Blows through the defense for a 21 yard touchdown. 15-3 Eagles. They go for two, which I absolutely hate. Incomplete pass. It's still 15-3.
Commercials: Pringles. Febreze. Chris Pratt for Michelob Ultra.
Anyway, back to the "going for two" thing. I wouldn't do it until I absolutely had to. The second quarter is not that time.
NBC graphic: Most championships by a coach/QB combo: Belichick-Brady and Lombardi-Starr are tied with five.
Tumblr media
Cutaways: Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez. Mike Trout, who Al Michaels calls a California Angel. Missed it by a couple decades, Al.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Big play from Brady to Burkhead. A screen pass - he nearly breaks it for a touchdown. Gets it to the Eagles' 29.
Third and 8, the Eagles completely blow up a screen pass with backfield penetration. Brady throws it away. Gostkowski kicks a 45 yard field goal. 15-6. And that's why you kick the extra point. A ten point lead is so much better than a nine-point lead.
Um, hello? The screen has gone black. I don't know what just happened. No commercials. They go back to the stadium after 10-15 seconds.
Tumblr media
Tafoya: Brandin Cooks will not return. He has a "head injury". Patriots now have a total of three wide receivers available.
Michaels: Foles nearly retired when he was released by the Rams. Decided there was only one coach he'd play for, Andy Reid of the Chiefs. Reid wanted him.
Collinsworth: I love what Nick Foles is doing. When the Patriots blitz, he's throwing the ball to the area vacated by the blitzer.
Big run from Ajayi on third and 4. Inside handoff, looks like he's in trouble, and he bursts through the hole to the New England 43.
Huge break for the Patriots. Alshon Jeffery makes a one-handed catch downfield inside the 10 but the ball squirts loose, hits him on the other hand, and bounces to a New England defensive back for an interception.
Commercials: Squarespace, Dodge Ram uses a Martin Luther King speech to sell trucks, which is unbelievably gross.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gross.
Tumblr media
Brady deep to Chris Hogan inside the 30. Next play, James White breaks about eight thousand tackles on a 26 yard touchdown run. Patriots doing Patriots things right before the half.
Gostkowski blows the extra point. 15-12 Eagles as we hit the two minute warning.
Tumblr media
Nope.
Huge play for the Eagles on third and 3. Corey Clement runs a swing route down the right sideline and Foles lofts it to him for a 55 yard gain inside the 10.
Next play, Clement powers up the middle to the 2. Nice power run from a third-down back. Clement again on second down. Up the middle again, gets to the 1. Patriots call timeout. 0:40 left.
Good lord, Alshon Jeffery got tackled in the end zone before the ball got there. Incomplete pass. They'll line up to go for it on fourth and goal.
Timeout, Eagles. They want to think about this. The offense is back on the field.
OH WOW. OH WOW.
Direct snap to Clement, flips it to Trey Burton, who throws to a wide-open Foles in the end zone. Touchdown. 22-12 Eagles with 0:34 left in the half.
Once again, Al Michaels says Mike Trout plays for the California Angels.
Patriots have the ball at midfield with 0:03 left. They're lining up for a Hail Mary.
They don't run a Hail Mary. They throw a swing pass to Amendola, who gains 20 yards as the half ends.
At halftime: Philadelphia 22, New England 12
Eagles coach Doug Pederson on the fourth down call at the 1: Our guys marched downfield and I wasn't going to let them get stopped at the one.
Tumblr media
HALFTIME
There are commercials happening, but I'm going to grab a snack and a drink. It's a local break anyway.
Commercials: "Unsolved" on USA Network. Pepsi.
Halftime show. Justin Timberlake. Opens with an unbelievably cool laser show under the stage. Now he's coming upstairs into the stadium. Not sure what's with the wardrobe choice. A black leather jacket with fringe and a bandana tied around his neck.
Justin Timberlake isn't my thing musically, but this has been a good halftime show. Better than the Coldplay/Beyonce thing. Better than the Black Eyed Peas. He seems to be changing stages for every new song.
Timberlake doing a "duet" with Prince, which is something Prince was pretty adamant about opposing when he was alive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mental note: Make a GIF of the saxophone guy Timberlake walked by just now.
I remembered. Look at sax guy on the left. He's the new Left Shark.
Okay, halftime show over. It was good. Not the best I've ever seen, but solid.
Commercials: A "Jack Ryan" series on Amazon, which seems like exactly the sort of show you'd make if you didn't want me to watch it. Verizon.
Dan Patrick: This is the first game in NFL history to be 22-12 at halftime.
Commercials: Promo for The Voice. Spectrum cable. Giant Eagle. This is obviously a local break. PSA about drinking and driving.
This is the first Super Bowl in history where both QBs were over 200 yards passing in the first half.
Tafoya: Asked Belichick why Butler wasn't playing. He said he makes decisions to give his team the best chance to win. Belichick says they need to do everything better in the second half.
THIRD QUARTER
First play of the second half, Brady misses a wide open Gronk.
They connect on the second play of the half. 25 yard completion downfield to the 50. Next play, Brady to Gronkowski again. 24 yards this time, to the Philadelphia 26.
3rd and 6, Gronkowski again. First and goal at the 8.
It's all Gronk, all the time. Brady zips it to Gronkowski in the end zone on second and goal. 22-18, pending the extra point.
Tumblr media
This is not optimal defensive positioning.
Got it this time. 22-19 Eagles. Brady up to 344 yards passing with more than 12 minutes left in the third quarter.
Commercials. Anheuser Busch. Turbotax.
Tumblr media
My dude.
Eagles called for a block in the back on the kickoff return. They'll start this drive inside their 20.
Third and 6, Eagles trying to avoid a three-and-out. Agholor with a catch underneath, breaks a tackle to pick up the first down.
A couple of nice runs from Blount and they're into New England territory.
Collinsworth suspects something's up with Jay Ajayi and maybe it is, but Blount has been great.
Ajayi looked okay on that run. Gains 9 on 2nd and 10 and gets to the New England 40.
3rd and 1, Foles to Ertz down the sideline. Gets to the Patriots' 26.
3rd and 6, Foles throws into the end zone. What. a. throw. Corey Clement double covered and the ball is perfect. Looks like Clement bobbled the ball. It's under review as NBC goes to commercial.
Commercials: Jeep. Westworld on HBO. Turbotax.
Ruling on the field stands. Touchdown. It was a close call. Collinsworth is flabbergasted. I don't know what a catch is anymore, to be frank, but I've seen worse calls than that. Extra point is good. 29-19 Eagles.
Commercials: Kia. Blacture.com. Eli Manning mumbling incoherently for something or other. Olympics promo.
Eagles called for defensive holding. Gronk sold it well.
2nd and 8, Dion Lewis up the middle for 6. 3rd and 2 from the Eagles 45.
Brady downfield to Amendola on third and 1. Amendola to the 26 yard line. Next play, Brady to Hogan, who falls into the end zone. Got it. Touchdown. 29-25 with the extra point to come.
Extra point is good.
Commercials: Avengers. T-Mobile. Jesus Christ Superstar promo.
Cutaways: Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton, Floyd Mayweather, Jimmy Fallon, Bradley Cooper.
Commercials: Toyota. Wix. Kraft. The Today Show.
Brady is 19-32 for 404 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT.
First play of the next drive, Folds downfield to Agholor. First down near midfield. Next play, Foles to Torrey Smith. 18 yard gain.
Jet sweep to Agholor for 9 on 2nd and 8. First down inside the New England 25.
NBC graphic: The two teams have combined for 955 total yards, the most in Super Bowl history. And it's still the third quarter.
Third quarter ends. The Eagles have a 3rd and 3 from the New England 15 yard line.
After three quarters: Philadelphia 29, New England 26
Commercials: NFL promo. ADT. Ohio Northern University. Obviously this is a local break. State Farm.
FOURTH QUARTER
Patriots blow up a swing pass to Agholor on third down. Eagles will presumably attempt a field goal after a loss of 8.
Jake Elliott drills a 42 yard field goal. Sets the record for the longest field goal kicked by a rookie in the Super Bowl. 32-26 Eagles. AND THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T GO FOR TWO IN THE SECOND QUARTER.
Commercials: Monster headphones. Michelob Ultra. Groupon.
It's a Rex Burkhead kind of drive for New England. Burkhead run for 5, then Burkhead for 9, then Burkhead for 4.
3rd and 3 for the Patriots. It's clear from motion that the defense is in man coverage, so Brady throws to Amendola. Because that's what he does in man coverage. First down. Next play is a pass downfield to Amendola. First down at the Philadelphia 20.
Hey, have I mentioned HOW BAD AN IDEA IT IS TO GO FOR TWO IN THE SECOND QUARTER?
Swing pass to Amendola for 9. Second and 1 inside the 10.
James White up the middle. First and goal at the Eagles' 3.
Brady is up to 453 yards passing. Throws incomplete on first and goal. Gronk. Brady into the end zone for his big tight end. It's tied at 32, which Michaels describes as the Patriots' first lead of the game.
Brady is now up to 457 yards and 3 TD.
Extra point is good. 33-32 Patriots.
Commercial: Amazon Alexa.
"So I said to myself 'We need that point. We have to get it back. We need to go for two.'"
Tumblr media
2nd and 6, Foles throws deep to Smith on a one-on-one jump ball. It falls incomplete. Weird play. It's a huge third down here.
HUGE PLAY. Foles to Ertz for 7 on 3rd and 6. Nice throw.
Clock under 7:00 as Foles throws to Clement. Seven yard gain on 2nd and 8. It's third and 1.
Eagles throw on third and 1. Ugh. It's a swing pass and it's stuffed. Pederson will go for it on 4th and 1.
WHEW. They threw the ball and picked it up. Foles to Ertz for 2. Clock below 5:00. Eagles near midfield.
Philadelphia uses a timeout with 4:52 left in regulation. They have two left.
Commercials: Coke. Peyton Manning for Universal Parks and Resorts. The World Cup on Telemundo.
Nice play by Agholor. Foles escapes the pocket and hits Agholor on the run at the sticks. First down. 3:30 and counting. First and 10 from the New England 43.
Agholor again! Foles zips it to him across the middle. There was a tiny window to complete that pass and he did it. First down inside the 25. The clock is about to become a factor here - the Eagles are likely to take the lead, barring a turnover. The question is how much time Brady will have and how many points he'll need.
Foles is up over 350 yards now. It's pretty obvious that the winning quarterback is going to be the MVP.
1,081 total yards tonight. The most in any NFL postseason game, ever.
Tumblr media
Foles to Agholor for 10 yards to the Patriots' 14. Forced out of bounds.
Ajayi for three yards up the middle. Patriots burn their second timeout with 2:30 remaining in regulation. It'll be 2nd and 7.
Incomplete pass on second and 7. Third and 7 here. 2:25 left. Brady's going to have some time, it looks like. If they can get 8 yards on this play, that would be perfect.
TOUCHDOWN! I think. Yeah, that's a touchdown. He had the ball, took a few steps, and dove into the end zone. Ertz took three steps before the ball hit the ground. It seems obvious that this is a touchdown. Collinsworth thinks they have to overturn it. I think he's insane.
I don't see how this is a close call. He caught the ball, started running, dove, got over the goal line, and then the ball popped loose. How is this a question?
What is Collinsworth smoking?
Yeah, they call it a touchdown. That was an easy one, I think. Collinsworth is silent.
Eagles up 38-33. They'll go for two.
Nope. Incomplete pass. AND THAT'S WHY YOU DON'T GO FOR TWO IN THE SECOND QUARTER. DAMMIT.
Brady has 2:21 to put together a touchdown drive.
Collinsworth is still talking about this?
Michaels: In all five Super Bowls Brady has won, he has come back to win them.
Tumblr media
Brady to Gronk for 8. 2:16.
BRADY FUMBLES! HOLY CRAP! EAGLES RECOVER.
The game isn't over, but it's damn close. Start chilling nem bottles of champagne.
We reach the two-minute warning with 1:56 left. It'll be third and 5 from the New England 26. They'll run the ball, get the clock down to 1:20 or so, then either kick a field goal (if they don't pick up the first down) or take a knee (if they do).
Blount stuffed on third down. Clock will be down to 1:10 before the field goal attempt. Eagles take a timeout with 70 seconds left.
46 yard field goal, dead center from Jake Elliott. Eagles up 41-33 with 1:05 left. Hell of a clutch kick by a rookie.
Patriots try to run a trick play on the return, but Burkhead is stuffed at the 9. Brady needs to go 91 yards in 58 seconds.
1st and 10, incomplete to Hogan.
2nd and 10, incomplete to White. 0:48 left.
3rd and 10, Brady under pressure in his own end zone, gets the throw off. Incomplete. It's 4th and 10. Now or never.
Complete to Amendola for 12 yards. They spike it with 26 seconds left. They still need 78 yards.
Brady to Gronk. Gets out of bounds at his own 33. 0:20 left.
Brady to Gronk for another 16, gets out of bounds. Near midfield. 0:13 left.
Eagles take their final timeout to talk this over.
Incomplete pass on first down. 0:09 left.
Next play, Brady buys time, chucks it deep, and it falls incomplete in the end zone as time expires.
Tumblr media
THE EAGLES HAVE WON THE SUPER BOWL.
THIS ONE'S FOR PHILLY BOY ROY.
Tumblr media
Final score: Philadelphia 41, New England 33. Nem Eagles got it done.
Tumblr media
POSTGAME
Commercials: Scientology.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, I’m curious. Where’s Shelly Miscavige? Why has nobody seen her in public in more than a decade?
Tom Brady threw for 505 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. And lost.
Brandon Graham: We are the world champions because we worked our butts off.
The Patriots punted zero times. And lost.
Collinsworth: Nick Foles was unbelievable tonight.
Trophy presentation. Darrell Green carries the Lombardi Trophy to the stage. Weird that they'd have an NFC East great who didn't play for Phiadelphia do this. Apparently he had a big game in Super Bowl XXVI. I contend that game never happened, which is a shame because the Bills were supposed to be in it.
Tumblr media
Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie: For Eagles fans everywhere, this is for them. This is the most unique, together, group of men I've ever been around. An incredible group of men, players and coaches. Attempts to dedicate the win. Dan Patrick blows through that, but Lurie somehow gets the microphone from him and dedicates this championship to Eagles fans around the world and especially to his mom and dad.
Tumblr media
Doug Pederson thanks Jesus. Praises his players. Has the best players in the world, loves the coaching staff and the owner. Has the best fans in the world.
Pederson: Wanted to stay aggressive with Foles. That was the plan coming in.
Ertz: No doubt that it was a touchdown. No telling what would have happened in the city of Philadelphia if it had been overturned.
Tumblr media
Nick Foles is the MVP. Jokingly says it was just another game. His infant daughter tries to grab the microphone. Foles says he's very blessed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commercials: Motorola with Amazon Alexa. H&R Block. Discover Card. McDonalds. Eagles championship gear at NFLShop dot com. Xfinity.
Dungy: Foles made big plays all night, but when he needed a touchdown, he went to Ertz.
Harrison: Said Graham would make a difference on defense for the Eagles, and he made the big play late in the fourth quarter.
Bill Belichick: I obviously didn't do a good enough job coaching. We missed a lot of opportunities in the first half. Not good enough on defense. Not good enough in the kicking game.
Tumblr media
Harrison: If the Patriots are going to come back to this game, they'll need to improve that defense. Just not enough athletes.
Dungy: Foles knows this is Carson Wentz's team, but was ready to go tonight.
Michaels and Collinsworth awkwardly fist bump.
