ElMax goes Back to the Future 2
Tumblr media
The girl on the poster runs towards the clock, not away. That's not Max running away from Vecna in "Dear Billy", that's Max so to speak driving the DeLorean before the lightning bolt hits the clock tower and stops it.
Also read part 1:
- The clock in Mrs Kelly's office -
Poor Mrs Kelly has been accused of being a henchman of Vecna and that the key necklace is the key to open of the Grandfather clock's window ... She never was and the key isn't. The necklace doesn't even have the right color nor shape to fit into the Grandfather clock. (which is why this idea was never convincing)
Tumblr media
The clock-key necklace however stands symbolically for "The clocks are the key" - like for example the clock in her office which points to 12 and 1.
121... 1.21
And of course the girl on the poster runs towards the clock. The interpretation that this is forshadowing Max running away from Vecna was never convincing to me. - She runs towards the 1.21. This is Marty who drives before the lightning bolt hits the clock tower to then travel into the future.
- The Starcourt Clock -
The clock in Starcourt has 8 single lines and 8 lines in pairs. Making it 88 - a reference to 88 miles per hour. (There's also an 88 hidden in the promo artwork of the Creel house rose)
Tumblr media
And the clock's hands are placed in a specific way, the short hand marks the point and the long hand the end, reading as 1.21
- Vecna's clock -
Tumblr media
Vecna's clock that Max sees points to XII and I ; the thin lines of the Xs are very, very thin which highlights the thick lines. So it looks like the long hand points to a \ and the short hand marks the end because it is between 1 and 2 which isn't right (at this position the long hand should be at 6). This reads as \ II I or you translate the Roman numbers into Arabic numbers 12 1. Again a reference to 1.21 Gigawatts.
- The lightning bolt hit at 10:04 -
Lightning struck with 1.21 Gigawatts by 88 mph when the 4th victim of 00I died and El then initiated the time jump, placing Max "Outatime" in a timeless dimension "Like when Eleven sent One into another dimension."
The clock tower stopped at exactly 10:04... Mirrored 4 001
Tumblr media
All the clocks are in one specific way pointing to 1.21, A) hinting at a time jump and B) that Max's mind is displaced into a timeless dimension because the lightning stopped the clock which is still held at 10:04 in the future of 2015 in Back to the future 2.
- Skateboard, Snowball, Shades & Eyes -
And don't forget that Marty is a skateboarder.
He has a Madrid brand skateboard. That's very specific. Why not just any skateboard? They chose skateboards on which you can clearly read the brand?
Tumblr media
Marty starts to vanish from existence - Max wishes to disappear and her mind does so when she's revived by El (transported into another dimension like Henry and temporally displaced because those dimensions are timeless). The decoration of the Snowball also looks exactly like the backdrop of the stage in Back to the Future.
Tumblr media
That's Marty playing incognito in Back to the future 2 like a young teen imagines "That's super inconspicuous:
Tumblr media
Right is Max playing incognito in Season 3 (right after this scene she pulls off the sunglasses) , foreshadowing her using sunglasses but not because she's blind but to hide her eyes from others.
Note the sunglasses - Max tries two other ones before picking the one with the red frame. Except for the color, both sunglasses look very identical.
There's an interesting detail in Back to the future 2. Both Marty (Michael J. Fox) and Biff (Thomas F. Wilson) have blue eyes. Both actors also play Marty Jr. and Griff (Biff's grandson) but with brown contact lenses. A tiny forgettable detail we only notice subconsciously that something is different. It's a detail the Duffers used in Season 2 of Stranger Things: while being possessed Will's eyes turn from green to brown.
Tumblr media
Usually people who are possessed have a very notable eye change in the horror and Scifi genre, sometimes permanent, sometimes just quick flashes of for example black shadows or something alike, so using this very specific eye color you may not even really notice consciously the first time watching is not just odd but a very deliberate choice by the Duffers.
It's these details that once used makes the audience subconsciously wonder, however used blatantly that's a different thing. So, there is precedence inside of Stranger Things itself. Why use it just once and also in a forgettable way? As so many things, this is placed to be used later again.
Turning Max's eyes brown for example as a sign of being possessed, although by a benevolent force such as El, would also give this line from the song Angel by Madonna a new meaning and that's probably why they chose this song:
"You are an angel in disguise (El inside of Max), I can see it in your eyes.(Max having brown eyes)"
- Mr Fusion -
Anyway, we do have some blatant reference of Back to the Future, not just the clocks, brands, set decorations and scenes but it's mentioned by Steve as well. "The one with the DeLorean and Alex P Keaton."
And likely referred to by Dr Brenner when he says to El: "If you want to stop One... You will need to fly." In terms of Back to the future that's the DeLorean flying powered by: Mr Fusion.
Tumblr media
Fusion... time jump. Linking arms, disappearing and reappearing together in front of a JC Penney, fully linked.
Someone really thinking that this is just a huge coincidence?
They technically put in the events of Season 4 into the riddle site Brenner is doing his crosswords, mentioning additionally a birthday and it there was a huge uproar that Will "accidentally" forgot his own birthday. It was not an accident.
They copy the way these franchises work. Back to the future itself made references you don't notice and foreshadowed in smaller and bigger scale certain events. (Pay attention to the shirt Doc Brown is wearing in BttF 2.
Although not made from scratch for the show, the Grandfather clock was according to sources modified by the production team. So, it's very likely that the main dial was altered and only the outer shape was actually used and reproduced

My Fandoms
This isn't a full list, and it will continue to be updated as my interests grow.
I will only be listing the fandoms I have posted about or plan to post about or may post about in the future or I just like it so much I don't want to leave it off this list.
If you'd like me to post about something in particular, drop me an ask. Make sure to include not just the fandom, but also what about that fandom you want me to write about.
Items in bold are fandoms that I have fanfic or articles about already, or they're getting cooked up. I write multiple things at once. That's just how I do.
Maybe one day I'll put these in alphabetical order. But that is not this day.

Listed: Lanterna
Tumblr media
Photo by Theo Merritt (c) 2021
Lanterna is the ambient shoegaze project of Champaign, Illinois veteran Henry Frayne, who, in the 1980s, played with midwestern bands including The Syndicate, ¡Ack-Ack!, Area, and The Moon Seven Times. In her review of Frayne’s seventh album as Lanterna, Hidden Drives, Jennifer Kelly noted that, “It hits a sweet spot in the overlap between ambient meditation and propulsive groove.” Here are some of the songs and artists that inspire Frayne.
The Past Seven Days — “Rain Dance”
youtube
I joined a Champaign band called ¡Ack-Ack! in 1984 and in addition to learning about group composition I gained access to their mix tape library and LP collection. One song on a mixtape was “Rain Dance,” a curiously long song for a 7" from a band that only released one 7".
A song with a guitar part that is almost all harmonics is stunning. Also, the dark and unsettling drones that hover at the edge of the sonic space (with indistinct voices and the insistent beat.) I’m not sure how many other guitarists it inspired but I have to say I did eventually end up recording a song using only harmonics. After all these years I am hearing the slow fadeout for the first time and those rather discordant notes at the very end.
Tubeway Army — “Me! I Disconnect From You”
youtube
My father always returned home from his travels with an LP for me from the places he had visited. In April of 1979 he and my mom were coming back from Europe and meeting me at my grandparents’ house in Riverside, NJ. I had been listening to a newly acquired copy of The Yes Album on an old console turntable when my father pulled out a copy of Tubeway Army’s Replicas from his luggage. He’d walked into a record shop in London before flying home and asked, “What's hot this week?”
One might wonder how this influential piece of vinyl affected me. How many copies of Replicas were in the US at that time? Did I start my own dystopian synth band in the garage when arriving in Maine that summer? Did I flee to the relative comfort of my progressive rock albums (where ironically the Minimoog had been in common use for some years!)? The answer is that Tubeway Army’s Replicas still sounds as mysterious as it did in the parlor of my grandparents’ house all those years ago.
StarCastle — “True To The Light”
youtube
My brother’s high school newspaper interviewed the resident local progressive rock band StarCastle in January of 1977 (at the local Champaign Pizza Hut on the U of I campus). My brother brought home the brand new Fountains of Light and I proceeded to put on Side 2 and was met with the heavenly flanged/chorused vocals of StarCastle’s “True To The Light.”
StarCastle were mostly local lads. Three of the members had graduated from my high school a few years before. They were signed to Epic Records at the time and recorded with Roy Thomas Baker (for two albums in one year). A friend delivered papers to their band house and hung out with them when they weren’t touring which was always! It was only in recently years that I’ve realized just how much StarCastle toured. They played with practically every band that passed through the Midwest and beyond in the mid-1970s.And it being the 1970s they thought nothing of releasing two RTB produced albums in the calendar year of 1977!
The StarCastle experience taught me that music on LP records can come from people who live in small towns just down the street from where one was playing Little League baseball.
The Chameleons — “On The Beach”
youtube
A blur of sound! It is still hard for me to believe that these songs were recorded in a conventional studio and not just sounds echoing through the glens captured by a bird watcher with a tape recorder in the Peak District.
Giles, Giles & Fripp feat. Judy Dyble — “I Talk To The Wind”
youtube
From reading about The Brondesbury Tapes it is apparent that they were recorded on a Revox reel to reel machine with the sound-on-sound function which allowed one to add a new part to an existing track (a function which could be repeated a number of times). This yielded a mono master, but it is in fact composed of multiple performances.
Before acquiring a Tascam 4-track I created songs using a Revox A77. As well as being able to create my first tape echo effects on the A77 it taught me a lot about mixing instrument parts together. It is fun to imagine the folks in Brondesbury Road going through the same process as I did to make this recording of “I Talk To The Wind.”
Blitz — “For You”
youtube
Another album borrowed from a member of ¡Ack-Ack!. It was the era of lightly chorused guitar and bass. I’ve always been in awe of the glassy sounding guitars on this track, and puzzled by the haltingly uncertain guitar solo near the end. One can feel the legendary ambience of Strawberry North throughout this track.
The Vertebrats — “Left In The Dark”
youtube
Sophomore year at Champaign Central High School a classmate started playing in a group called The Vertebrats. In December of 1979 I was in the audience in the chapel at the Red Herring Coffeehouse in Urbana, Illinois to see one of their earliest shows. The chapel would always sport a very reverberant sound but with vocals, two guitars (one a Fender Mustang favoring the treble pickup), drums, and bass it was an awesome experience. For one, there was someone I knew making this ruckus, in addition to the songs and particularly “Left In The Dark” being instant classics. I’d started seeing rock shows at the local arena the year before but never up close with the band playing at floor level. I had a handheld Sony tape recorder on loan during that time but sadly didn’t take it along to this legendary show.
The Beatles — “Only A Northern Song”
youtube
In June of 1974, following afternoon showings of The Seven Samurai, and Modern Times at the University of Illinois, my father and I did our usual rounds to the local new and used record emporiums. Record shops proper, but also The Salvation Army. It was here amongst the discarded shirts, slacks, pots, and pans that I spied the distinctive artwork of the Yellow Submarine soundtrack album. I’d seen the film a few years before when it was first in the theaters, and still had the songs buzzing in my head. Being able to listen to songs from a film at home was a new concept which I was willing to dive into. The band was most certainly not quite right but that was okay with me!
The Wild Flowers — “The Promised Land”
youtube
A purchase at Champaign’s Record Swap (still around, now in Urbana at Lincoln Square!) in the Fall of 1984. As was the case with The Sound’s Heads and Hearts, The Quaker would hand me an album from behind the counter and it would go on to influence me for years to come. My favorite guitar, bass, synth, and drum sounds of all time!
Yardbirds w/ Jimmy Page & Jeff Beck — Blow Up (1966)
youtube
With a father who taught film studies at the University of Illinois, it fell to him to once in a while check incoming acquisitions to the 16mm film library there. I’m sure that I didn’t see ALL of Antonioni’s Blow Up but I'm sure I bestirred myself from doing my grade school homework when the opening howl of “Stroll On” tore through the Frayne household one summer’s eve.
At the time I had no way of knowing that the chap on stage right was the very same guitarist playing some wicked (heavenly?) acoustic and electric guitar (including a Fender Electric XII) on a certain tune that WLS would be playing every hour on the hour for the next several years.

ToS: Season 2 Rewatch:  3.4: And the Children Shall Lead.  (CW: Suicide)
The main three beam down in response to a distress signal to find nearly everyone dead.  They take zero precautions against pathogens or alien parasites despite a number of previous times they answered distress calls only to get infected by a deadly pathogen or taken over by aliens.  seriously, have these people learned nothing at all in three years?  A dying friend of Kirk doesn't recognize him.  It looks like it's all self inflicted.  They get a damaged recording of a man yelling about an "enemy within."
All the colony children are alive though, and playing rather than traumatized.  Shatner's WTF face may be some of the most believable acting of his whole career.  Nimoy still wins though of the three of them, despite DeForest Kelly's excellent entry.  McCoy thinks it's a trauma response and wants to get them up to the ship instead of letting the others interrogate them, so he beams up with the children without any quarantine procedures in place.  Spock suspects induced suicide caused by a biological or chemical agent, yet they are not wearing NBC suits or even the most basic PPE.  Just saying.  yes, it won't help with dis corporate aliens and the like, but they don't know what caused it yet.  Anyway, maybe the children are behaving oddly through fear of punishment or promise of reward.  I wonder if this episode influenced Children of the Corn?
Spock finds a weird reading in a nearby cave.  Nothing humanoid is in there (except themselves, presumably).  Kirk gets anxiety.  Spock feels nothing.  Kirk gets weird and paranoid rapidly, in some of the worst acting of Shatner's career.  It passes so they beam up with no anti-infection protocols despite kirk possibly being infected.
Nurse Chapel gives the kids ice cream using primitive replicators as a special treat.  No one is wearing PPE.  One child, Stevey, is singled out by the narrative.  McCoy says there is nothing physically wrong with them.  McCoy wants to go to a star base to spread the possible infection and let a real child psychologist deal with them.  Kirk insists on interrogating them against the doctors orders.
Kirk tries to relate to the children and asks leading questions.  Nurse Chapel: Parents like children.  Little Girl: That's what you think.  Kirk presses.  They start chanting "Bizzy!  Bizzy!" and the girl pretends to be a bee stinging Kirk.  The leader of the children asks for more ice cream.  Kirk's refusal is proof "They all say it."  When questioned the leader says his father was upset the day he died.  "They were always upset."  Was this episode influenced by the Twilight Zone's "It's a Good Life?"  The planet was for adults, who loved it down there, always "Bizzy."  a clue, methinks!  Kirk sensibly puts a guard on the children.
The children do a ritual to summon "The Angel."  An alien appears, telling them they did very well in infiltrating the Enterprise.  The adults will want to take them to a Star base, but they should get them to take them to Marcus 12, with millions on it.  Maybe a million friends to join them.  The rest (adults, I assume) will be enemies.  They will defeat the enemies, no one will tell them what to do, and the alien will rule the universe.  The children are ordered to take over the Enterprise.
They clean up the tricoder recording.  The adults had anxiety, of which the children are free.  They kept poking around in the cave, despite growing anxiety.  The last survivor of a dead race took refuge in there long ago.
The children want to go to Markus XII.  Kirk says no.  The leader stays on the bridge to psychically influence the navigators.  The girl turns up with her security guard.  The Leader is making them think they are circling the planet still when they are actually flying to Markus XII.  Uhura notices and gets zapped too.  Scotty notices down in engineering, but they already zapped the other Engineers. They fight, but Scotty wins.
On the tapes, the expedition head says they were making him do things like call Starfleet for transportation.  he tried to warn them when he realized what he'd done, but "The Enemy within!"  The dispatch was never sent.  It happened fast.  They realize that whatever it was misled 'the innocent' IE: The children.  The destroyed race were marauders that kept attacking their neighbors until they were eventually destroyed by their combined victims.  Kirk thinks the evil has returned.  McCoy objects to damaging the children.  Kirk is like the ship comes first.
Kirk goes to switch planetary investigation crews, but the planet isn't there, so the guys they send down are beamed into space and they can't bring up the ones they left down there.  Why are there no safety protocols for this?
The children summon the alien on the bridge surrounded by tranced out adults.  Kirk is not best pleased.  The alien says they've been discovered, but it's too late for the adults to stop them.  If the adults give them trouble the children should release the beast of fear in the adults.  Kirk battles the leader for control of Sulu and Uhura.  The child makes Uhura see herself old, which... fuck you writers.  Let's make the woman vane.  Sulu thinks if he changes course they will be destroyed.  Spock refuses to obey the order to send a report to StarFleet.  he fails to obey, despite all that mental discipline training and I think that makes no sense.  Logically, Spock should be resistant rather than Kirk, but Spock does break the control.  The security guards can't understand Kirk.  Spock takes Kirk off the bridge, just as Kirk succumbs to his fear of losing control.
Spock mind melds him and fixes it in the elevator.  Scotty's been zapped and threatens to kill Kirk if he touches the instruments.  The engineers attack, but Spock and Kirk escape.  Spock wants to do something about the children, "Without followers evil can not spread."  The ship and the crew are in danger.  "The evil is spreading fast."  Kirk agrees that if they can't excise the evil the children will need to be killed.  Chekhov turns up with security to arrest them.  The Leader gets Chekhov to threaten to kill them.  Conflicting loyalties are invoked.  A fight ensues.  The leader runs when his people lose.
Kirk returns to the bridge, where the leader is in the captain's seat.  A very childish argument ensues.  Kirk points out their leader is afraid to be seen.  If he's not afraid he should show himself.  Spock plays the recording of the Alien summoning chant.  The Alien appears.  Kirk and Spock argue with him.  he thinks Kirk and Spock's gentleness makes them weak.  They show the children pictures of the children playing with their late parents.  They smile.  Then there is the image of their dead parents and the smiles fade.  So very manipulative.  The Alien tries to justify murdering their parents to the crying children.  Kirk points out to the children that without them the alien is nothing.  he turns "ugly," because of course star Trek needs to hammer in the idea that the beautiful are good and anyone who isn't is bad.  Fuck you, Roddenberry.

short version | long version | youtube | spotify unwrapped
long version will lead you to the 165 song, 10 hour and 34 minute playlist which i’ve been slowly adding to since january. short version will lead you to what you see here. youtube will lead you to the playlist you see here but... wait for it... on youtube. mostly because i know not everyone has spotify. spotify unwrapped will lead you to a mixture of the long and the short version, which is pretty bloated with austin wintory songs because those are what i listen to when i write or read usually.
the long version is much improved in length from last year, which was 261 songs and 17 hours, but that’s mostly because august through december i was pretty bad at keeping track of the music that caught my attention. whoops.
and under the cut is me ranting about music, like usual. enjoy!
i. dark night || philip sheppard *instrumental*
This was my absolute favorite from the Detroit: Become Human soundtrack. I tended to prefer Kara’s songs most because they were gorgeous and haunting and just plain fantastic. Connor’s songs were mostly listened to while writing for the fandom, but Kara’s songs were what I kept coming back to. ii. curse of the i-5 corridor || neko case So I left home and faked my ID I fucked every man that I wanted to be
Sometime in January, I fell in love with eighteen wheels on an uphill climb, which was a 91k hank/connor wip by blackeyedblonde. Hank’s a trucker. Connor occasionally dabbles in sex work to keep himself alive and moving. But like, it’s so much more than that? Anyway, at some point the author linked to this song. I think it may have been on tumblr, but I fell in love with it and neko case.
iii. way down we go || kaleo Oh, 'cause they will run you down, down 'til the dark Yes and they will run you down, down 'til you fall And they will run you down, down 'til you go Yeah, so you can't crawl no more
Speaking of Detroit: Become Human (sensing a theme?), this fanvideo is one of my favorite things in the world. I had it and a couple other fantastic videos like it playing in the background while writing for the fandom. This video, in fact, is what finally made me go in search of the game. iv. almost (sweet music) || hozier The same kind of music haunts her bedroom I'm almost me again, she's almost you Wasteland, Baby was a thing that happened to me. Which would have already been enough to get it on this list, but I also listened to it on repeat while writing my first DBH fic. v. dancing in a room || ezi I know you notice, notice me I might be broken but it's not showing It's how I'm copin', copin' I don’t actually remember where this one came from. I know that sometime when March is still a bit cold, I listened to a playlist on spotify that I can’t find for the life of me. It had a lot of the songs that are about to come up on it, and before I started exclusively listening to audiobooks while I got ready for work in the morning, I listened to random fantastic playlists. vi. epic (pt ii) || anais mitchell & justin vernon And suddenly Hades was only a man with a taste of nectar upon his lips
Hadestown was also a thing that happened to me. This song makes me fucking weak. All of the lyrics are great, the whole song is gorgeous and haunting and so perfect it hurts, but those lyrics above are just *chefs kiss* vii. spanish sahara || foals Forget the horror here Leave it all down here It's future rust and it's future dust
Sometime during the spring, I played Life Is Strange and had a million and one feelings. I played both options for the ending and each one was gut wrenching in its own way. I think I still prefer the one where Chloe lives, but this song has literally haunted me ever since.
viii. obstacles || syd matters Someday we will foresee obstacles Through the blizzard, through the blizzard And this is the song that plays if you make the other choice. Again, SUPER TRAGIC, but also you know. You get to keep your girlfriend. ix. tom thumb || bitter ruin And I know I'll be burnt, but I can stand a flame or two to catch you
This was one of the songs that I discovered on the mysterious spotify playlist! Something I’d forgotten: I discovered Hadestown off of that playlist. Thanks, mystery playlist. You gave me all the ear worms. x. wolves of the revolution || the arcadian wild You're trapped inside of your own heart It's a spectators sport, just play your part You guessed it - from the mystery playlist. They’re all very reminiscent of the Hadestown soundtrack. Vaguely eerie, kind of haunting, a lot beautiful. Makes you feel like you’re a forest creature living on the edge of the swamp. You know: the aesthetic. xi. epic (pt iii) || anais mitchell & justin vernon Where is the treasure inside your chest? Where is your pleasure? Where is your youth? Where is the man with his hat in his hands? Who stands in the garden with nothing to lose I thought about only including this one instead of including part 2, but in the end I loved both too much to choose. Hadestown, man. I hope it comes to Ohio at some point in the near future. xii.  the spine || darren korb & ashley barrett Fingers tied themselves in knots around the heart It beats in time I see the spine of the world
I have never actually played Transistor, which is fucking tragic because I listened to basically the entire soundtrack over and over again for the entire year. There’s at least one more song from the game on this list, but it is really wonderful. Haunting vocals, perfect for writing or reading or driving.  xiii. don’t think twice || hikaru utada I'm only crying 'cause I never dreamed It'd take this long, it'd take this long Hi, I played Kingdom Hearts 3 this year. And I cried so fucking much. I had some issues with the game, namely how the ending was such a clusterfuck of boss fight after boss fight and emotional character arc resolutions so it all felt kind of rushed? But the gameplay was superb, the selfie thing was ingenious, and I did cry at least six different times while I was stressing my way through fighting boss fights with blurry eyes. xiv. face my fears || hikaru utada Oh, let me face, let me face, let me face my fears Won't be long, won't be long, I'm almost here Watch me cry all my tears
So like, if you care at all you’ve probably already seen it, but the opening cutscene of KH3 was to Face My Fears, and I’m gonna be real honest here - I didn’t like it at first. I moaned and groaned about Skrillex and how it was nothing like Simple and Clean or Passion/Sanctuary. But it grew on me to the point that it was actually my most listened to song this year. Watch me cry all my tears, indeed. xv. waves || chloe moriondo Make me into more than a goner Perhaps a little bit stronger Thicker skin, less needy, And maybe to not bruise so damn easily, but you can't
I don’t remember where I found this song either? Maybe mystery playlist but probably not. Either way, it’s pretty and uh, I too want to slow the world down. xvi. ashes || bear mccreary -instrumental- Man, oh man, let’s talk about how good of a game God of War was. It was so good, guys. The game play was excellent, the world was gorgeous, and the storyline was interesting. And the music went so, so hard. Between Horizon Zero Dawn and the new God of War, I have basically been ruined for all other games. Also, dad protagonists, am I right? xvii. wake up, moving on || kevin penkin -instrumental-
Did not actually realize this was part of a soundtrack to a game? But it’s very lilty. Has that French quirky romcom vibe to it and I listened to the crap out of it in early summer. xviii. paper boats || darren korb & ashley barrett The river always finds the sea So helplessly Like you find me
Another Transistor song. I really love Ashley Barrett’s voice. I should probably at some point play the game. xix. call off your ghost || dessa I hope she makes you happy It's just a lot to ask to watch your future walking past me
This song played during one of the weather segments of Welcome to Night Vale and made me remember how much I absolutely adore Dessa. Her voice is fantastic and I love the way that her songs flow. Also, this song gives me personal feels. xx. power over me || dermot kennedy I wanna be king in your story I wanna know who you are I want your heart to beat for me I have absolutely no idea where I heard this one. It might have been playing on the radio while I was driving somewhere? I played it a lot during the summer.  xxi. a future for the krogan || christopher lennertz -instrumental- It’s been a while since I played Mass Effect, but this song came up on a writing playlist and I have been listening to it ever since.
xxii. mine || bazzi Running circles 'round my mind Even when it's rainy all you ever do is shine
Shrug emoji.
xxiii. bite || charlie cunningham Stone cold faces let you keep you poisoning your blood Cut you open then you'll see poison in your blood
Also shrug emoji? Most of the time when I’m doing these there’s fandom connatations to half the songs, but these year I wasn’t heavily invested in a whole lot of fandoms so these are mostly just songs I listened to while I was a) driving, b) in the shower, or c) while reading.
xxiv. wait for me || andre de shields Ain't no compass, brother, there ain't no map Just a telephone wire and the railroad track Keep on walking and you don't look back
And here’s the last Hadestown song on the list. It’s just... really good, okay. Really, really good. xxv. birds || imagine dragons & elisa Seasons, they will change Life will make you grow Dreams will make you cry, cry, cry
I think there’s been an Imagine Dragons song on here every year since they came out with Radioactive. This is the only song of theirs I heard this year, but pairing their voice with Elisa’s was fucking genius because this song makes me feel the chorus in my soul. xxvi. crazy || patsy cline You'd love me as long as you wanted And then some day You'd leave me for somebody new I was at a bar, and my friend has just announced that he was getting married to his girlfriend of ten years in Vegas, on a ferris wheel, by an Elvis impersonator. We started listening to Elvis songs to figure out what he’d play, and then we got distracted listening to a bunch of old love songs. This one is more heartbreak than love, but I’ve always loved Patsy’s voice. xxvii. bury a friend || billie eilish Bury a friend, try to wake up
I was really slow to the Billie Eilish train. One of my friends recommended her music and it’s just so chaotic and fantastic that I can’t believe I didn’t fall for it earlier. This song in particular was a Billy Hargrove song for a while.
xxviii. the seed || aurora Feed me sunlight, feed me air In a place where nothing matters Feed me truth and feed me prayer Aurora’s got one of those truly lovely voices. Also I like songs about how the earth should eat humanity.
xxix.  eleventh dimension || julian casablancas 'Cause no one really cares or wonders why anymore Oh, I got music, coming out of my hands and feet and kisses
Back in 2011, when I was still watching Doctor Who, someone made this video which blew my little heart away. I rediscovered this song while we were driving back to Ohio from our annual beach trip and managed to get everyone in the car hooked on it for weeks afterwards.
xxx. sunflower || post malone You're a sunflower I think your love would be too much
Into the Spiderverse! Was so! Good!
xxxi. what’s up danger || blackway, black caviar I like it all on the edge just like you, ayy I like tall buildings so I can leap off of 'em
So like, that scene, right? The one that had everyone losing their collective shit? I saw gifs before I watched the movie, and goddamn, it lived up to every single expectation I ever had. I made Nick watch it with me, and he groaned a lot because honestly he is not the biggest fan of super hero movies, but even he admitted that it was the best damn Spiderman movie we’d ever seen. It was powerful and clever and heartwarming and funny and the music and animation were both fan-freaking-tastic.
xxxii. bad guy || billie eilish I'm the bad guy, duh Can you believe that I actually didn’t know about this video until @nijuukoo did art? I mean, I’d definitely heard it and liked it before hand, but the fucking video, man. That pic of Vanitas showering Ven in hearts is still the background of my desktop.(It would have been the one of him sitting on Ansem while he’s doing push ups, but it didn’t work with my screen)
xxxiii. elevate || dj khalil I jump off this building to save these civilians My strength and my honor is trusted by children I'm ready and willing to fight all these villains No chaos or killings, my style is so brilliant I really, really liked the music to Into the Spiderverse.
xxxiv. must’ve been || chromeo I must've been high when I met you Out of my mind when I decided to love you
There was a Harringrove fic that I read during the summer that made the connection between this song and modern AU Billy and Steve. I thought it was @lymricks but maybe not. Either way - I listened to this for like three weeks straight while reading about Billy and Steve flirting at the pool. Ha! Found it - you, through half-shut eyes by @brawlite.
xxxv. dark matter || les friction Bring me your soul, bring me your hate In my name you will create Bring me your fear, bring me your pain You will destroy in my name
There was an Outsider fanvid. I tripped over it.
xxxvi. lark of my heart || eliza rickman Lark of my heart - dance in the dark and say you love me Lark of my heart - right from the start and say you love me
This one was another that I found on a random playlist while I was reading and I just love the rhythm of the song. I sat right up and favorited that sucker before I lost it.
xxxvii. dancing on my own — robyn I'm just gonna dance all night I'm all messed up, I'm so outta line Stilettos on broken bottles I'm spinning around in circles Okay. Okay, okay, okay. So there was that tumblr post that went around a while back where a bunch of subway riders who just got back from a Robyn concert started singing while waiting for the train and I just. It makes me so fucking happy. Like, I remember the night I clicked on that video. I’d never heard the song before, but I didn’t need to because the level of fucking joy and unity in that video literally brought tears to my eyes. Sometimes, humans are fucking beautiful.
xxxviii. hungover in the city of dust || autoheart We’re hungover in the city of dust So let our minds run round in circles While we figure it all out
I really adore autoheart. They did Sailor Song, which was on my Top Songs post last year and honestly, according to the plays on spotify, probably should have still been on my list this year, but alas - this is the abridged version. Every song I’ve heard from them I’ve loved. The entire bridge makes me shiver, it’s just so wonderfully executed.
xxxix. season of the witch || lana del rey You've got to pick up every stitch, The rabbits running in the ditch, Oh no, must be the season of the witch In October I watched Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and it was super spooky and really great and probably one of the best movies I saw this year? But like, also this cover by Lana del Rey was the best damn thing about it. Someone made a witchy video that was great too but I can’t find it now. xl. bird song || juniper vale Listen to the sound of my heart beat slow Yeah, my heart's like yours, my heart's like yours Listen to the sound, oh it feels like home When our hearts beat slow together
I really like Juniper Vale. I found them last year when I stumbled across their cover of Singing In The Rain, and they churn out some really quality music.
xli. paradise valley || honey & the sting So you'll have to hold me down Could you just hold me down build the levees higher This song was always going to make it to 2019′s list too. It’s just too damn good. Thank you, Wolf 359. You’ve given me a gift that is still giving three years later.
xlii. my hallelujah || autoheart Thought I found a new religion In you who was I kidding There's nowhere to go Except for under quarantine
More Autoheart! Just listen to that melody! That flow!
xliii. furthest star || dirt poor robins We'll find our hiding place Clear across the Milky Way Beyond the galaxy On the furthest star that we see
This song reminds me a lot of Muse back in their early days. I was half-napping on the couch listening to, you guessed it, a random playlist on spotify, and I liked this song enough to surface from the edges of slumber to favorite it so I could find it again.
xliv. play dirty || kevin mcallister Would you get the Devil this dance? Would you be a part of his plans? Now you got some blood on your hands
There was a fanvid. It was good and basically caught me up on Preacher. The song is also really catchy.
xlv. it’s quiet uptown || kelly clarkson Look at where we are Look at where we started Last year, this was on my list because of an EOS 10 playlist. This year it’s on my list because I still fucking love it. Also I saw Hamilton this year and it was really phenomenal. I cannot get over how good it was.
xlvi. pas de deux || michael abels -instrumental- I watched Us in late October/early November and this entire sequence was really lovely and eerie and just all around fantastic. I loved the mirroring throughout the movie, and it all came together in this stunning confrontation.
xlvii. i got 5 on it || michael abels, luniz, mi I got five on it
Us had a really good soundtrack.
xlviii. one day more || les mis cast One more dawn One more day One day more!
About a month ago I got to see Les Mis in theater and I cried like six or seven times. That is not an exaggeration I was a fucking mess. As much as I’ve adored every musical I have seen up until this point, I have never had a musical affect me the way this one did. It was incredibly powerful and the experience was worth every damn cent.
xlix. into the unknown || idina menzel, aurora Everyone I've ever loved is here within these walls I'm sorry, secret siren, but I'm blocking out your calls
Like, I know it’s cool to hate on Frozen because it got so popular, but Idina Menzel is a queen with the voice of an angel and I’m sorry, but the movies were good. Also, Elsa is very, very pretty and this shit was very, very gay.
l. show yourself || idina menzel & evan rachel wood Come to me now Open your door Don't make me wait One moment more
Sorry, I don’t make the rules. Elsa gets all the best numbers. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, folks. Happy listening.

so my sister sent me this video of newsies at disneyland dancing with mickey to seize the day and it made me realize that disney DOES own newsies and therefore they could technically show up in a kingdom hearts game and now im like okay. so in kingdom hearts 6.5 (which is actually a prequel about mickey mouse's younger days when he first realizes he wants to become a keyblade master) mickey is ya know zoomin from planet to planet and happens upon the newsies planet and he befriends them and helps them seize the day or whatever and at the end he's like "okay hua-ha it's time to seize the day and go kick MoM's b-u-t-t" (because the entire game was revealed to be a data world that mickey is playing through as himself to help him remember an obscure piece of information—that minnie mouse is actually the reincarnation of ava the foreteller—and the newsies world was the second to last stage before the final boss fight against one of MoM's 26 clones) and the newsies are like "??? MoM ??? idk who ur mom is but SCREW ‘er! we'll help ya if yous need it, here, have one of our newsboy hats as a token. we'll come when ya call" and mickey's like HUA-HA and he never calls upon them. but later on down the road in kingdom hearts 7.//X Æ A-Xii sora finds a newsboy hat in a treasure chest and is able to call upon the power of jack kelly, who to our knowledge he has never met and mickey has also never met bc they couldn't secure to the rights to that particular character for kingdom hearts 6.5 (all the newsies were like generic newsies in that game, fans were really disappointed), but this time they nabbed the rights AND christian bale as a VO so sora uses the newsboys summon item all the time and summons jack kelly and they laugh like they're old friends even though, again, they do not know each other and jack doesn't even know MICKEY, and they do the dance choreo from the seize the day reprise and it actually does a shit ton of damage and is widely regarded as the best move in kingdom hearts 7.//X Æ A-Xii, if not the entire series

All 63 Super Bowl starting quarterbacks, ranked
Tumblr media
From the forgettable (Earl Morrall and Chris Chandler) to the GOATs (Tom Brady and Joe Montana).
Coming into 2020, 61 different quarterbacks had started 53 different Super Bowls. At Super Bowl 54, we’ll get two big game debutantes trying to push their storied franchises back to glory.
Patrick Mahomes’ Chiefs will take on Jimmy Garoppolo’s 49ers in Miami, a game that will either give San Francisco its first NFL title since 1995 or Kansas City its first in 50 god-blessed years. The winner will etch his name among the hall of immortals, joining legends like Terry Bradshaw, Joe Namath, and, uh, Trent Dilfer. The loser will dig a bottomless well of motivation to fuel his competitive fire from Feb. 2, 2020 until retirement.
Mahomes and Garoppolo will join a group of quarterbacks who range from elite to Rex Grossman. Their performances vary from historically terrible to enormously successful — and now we’re going to rank them.
Putting all 63 quarterbacks in order was a strenuous undertaking. Super Bowl success came first and foremost, with wins adding extra gravity to a successful stat line. This isn’t a straight-up ranking of every quarterback who has ever played in a Super Bowl — it’s a ranking of the performance and trustworthiness of all those players.
Let’s start at the bottom, with the architect of one of the least exciting championship games ever played.
Dead effin’ last
63. Tony Eason, Patriots, Super Bowl XX
Eason completed zero of six passes, was sacked three times, and fumbled once. He was responsible for -3 Patriot points. Steve Grogan came on in relief and threw for New England’s only touchdown in a 46-10 blowout.
The forgettable and uninspiring
62. Craig Morton, Dallas Cowboys, Super Bowl V AND Denver Broncos, Super Bowl XII
61. Billy Kilmer, Washington, Super Bowl VII
60. Kerry Collins, New York Giants, Super Bowl XXXV
59. Earl Morrall, Baltimore Colts, Super Bowl III
Morton completed 16 passes in 41 attempts over two different Super Bowls, throwing seven (SEVEN!) interceptions in the process). Kilmer was so bad that the only passing play Washington found the end zone with was the product of Garo Yepremian meme-ing himself back in 1973.
Collins added an extra volume of books to the legend of the Baltimore defense with a four-interception performance in a blowout loss. Morrall’s passer rating against the underdog Jets was 9.3, and he was so bad a 35-year-old Johnny Unitas had to try and salvage things (he did not).
58. David Woodley, Miami Dolphins, Super Bowl XVII
57. Joe Kapp, Minnesota Vikings, Super Bowl IV
56. Ron Jaworski, Philadelphia Eagles, Super Bowl XV
55. Chris Chandler, Atlanta Falcons, Super Bowl XXXIII
54. Boomer Esiason, Cincinnati Bengals, Super Bowl XXIII
53. Neil O’Donnell, Pittsburgh Steelers, Super Bowl XXX
Woodley is the first guy on the list to have thrown for a touchdown — one of four passes he completed that day. Kapp spent more time in the CFL than in the NFL.
Jaworski may be a Philadelphia legend, but he completed less than half his passes and threw three interceptions in his lone Super Bowl appearance. Chandler was so eminently forgettable he didn’t even merit a blurb in the first draft of these rankings. Esiason was woefully ineffective against the 49ers in his one and only Super Bowl. What can be said about Neil O’Donnell that hasn’t also been said about a bowl of corn flakes?
52. Jared Goff, Los Angeles Rams, Super Bowl 53
51. Rex Grossman, Chicago Bears, Super Bowl XLI
50. Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers, Super Bowl 50
49. Matt Hasselbeck, Seattle Seahawks, Super Bowl XL
Goff got absolutely flustered in his first big game by the Patriots blitz-heavy defense. The Indianapolis Colts are forever in Rex Grossman’s debt for gifting the franchise their first Super Bowl title in the state of Indiana.
Newton completed less than 44 percent of his passes and forced the world to witness another Peyton Manning Super Bowl win. Humphries did the unthinkable by actually getting the cursed Chargers to a Super Bowl, then needed 49 passes to throw for 275 yards. Hasselbeck dropped back 55 times and managed to score exactly 10 points against the Steelers.
48. Stan Humphries, San Diego Chargers, Super Bowl XXIX
47. Vince Ferragamo, Los Angeles Rams, Super Bowl XIV
46. Drew Bledsoe, New England Patriots, Super Bowl XXXI
45. Jimmy Garoppolo, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl 54
44. Rich Gannon, Oakland Raiders, Super Bowl XXXVII
Ferragamo had a 4:7 TD:INT ratio in five starts leading up to Super Bowl XIV, so it’s an accomplishment he only threw one against the Steelers. Bledsoe threw twice as many interceptions (12) as touchdowns (six) in his career in the postseason. Garoppolo played like a Super Bowl MVP for 50 minutes, then crumbled into dust in the final 10 as the Chiefs ran past his Niners for the Lombardi Trophy. Gannon’s five turnovers against Tampa Bay is the reason Jon Gruden was able to command a 10-year, $100 million salary from the Raiders.
The inessential but useful
43. Donovan McNabb, Philadelphia Eagles, Super Bowl XXXIX
42. Trent Dilfer, Baltimore Ravens, Super Bowl XXXV
41. Brad Johnson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Super Bowl XXXVII
40. Steve McNair, Tennessee Titans, Super Bowl XXXIV
McNabb threw for 357 yards and three touchdowns ... but also threw three interceptions and executed Andy Reid’s complete lack of clock management perfectly to help give the Patriots their third Super Bowl win in four years.
Johnson did enough to calmly stand back and watch Gannon’s Oakland team repeatedly shoot itself in the foot in 2003. Dilfer put together a tremendous 1962-ish stat line (12 of 25, 153 yards, 1 touchdown), but won anyway thanks to the Baltimore defense. McNair finished one yard shy of a bump up to the next tier thanks to Mike Jones (who?):
youtube
39. Daryle Lamonica, Oakland Raiders, Super Bowl II
38. Jeff Hostetler, New York Giants, Super Bowl XXV
Hostetler never threw for many yards but still won a ton of games in his career, a trend that continued when he took over for Phil Simms at Super Bowl XXV. Lamonica was an outstanding 1960s quarterback who couldn’t overcome the early Packers juggernaut.
The guys who were better than the quarterbacks of the early Super Bowl era, but I’m not gonna rank them ahead of Hall of Famers because I like a clean, hate-free inbox
Based on pure performance, these guys were mostly statistically better than the quarterbacks in the tier above them. But the combination of past performance and comparing the NFL offenses of the 1960s/70s to the play of the last 30 years makes a straight comparison difficult. These are the guys you’d like to have leading your team — but if you had the option to replace them with a Hall of Famer like Joe Namath or Fran Tarkenton, you wouldn’t say no.
37. Ken Anderson, Cincinnati Bengals, Super Bowl XVI
36. Colin Kaepernick, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl XLVII
35. Jim McMahon, Chicago Bears, Super Bowl XX
Anderson accounted for all three of Cincinnati’s touchdowns against the 49ers in his only Super Bowl; it’s not his fault he had to stare down a budding dynasty. Kaepernick had 364 total yards and two touchdowns and nearly kept the world from a million fluff pieces about Ray Lewis’ redemption, and for this he should be commended. McMahon was great — 256 passing yards and two rushing touchdowns — but really didn’t have to do much against the festering boil that was the Tony Eason-led Patriots.
The old guard Hall of Famers who are nearly impossible to compare to modern passers
34. Fran Tarkenton, Minnesota Vikings, Super Bowls VIII, IX, and XI
33. Johnny Unitas, Baltimore Colts, Super Bowl V
32. Joe Theismann, Washington, Super Bowls XVII and XVIII
31. Len Dawson, Kansas City Chiefs, Super Bowls I and IV
30. Joe Namath, New York Jets, Super Bowl III
29. Ken Stabler, Oakland Raiders, Super Bowl XI
28. Roger Staubach, Dallas Cowboys, Super Bowls VI, X, XI, and XIII
27. Bob Griese, Miami Dolphins, Super Bowls VI, VII, and VIII
Football has changed so drastically it’s tough to compare the low volume passers of yesteryear to the ever-evolving spread offenses of the past two-plus decades. Case in point: Griese threw 41 passes over the course of three Super Bowls. Tom Brady has thrown that many or more in six different Super Bowls.
Tarkenton made it to three Super Bowls and threw six interceptions and only one touchdown. Unitas had a 42.4 percent completion rate and 34.7 passer rating in the big game. Theismann’s two Super Bowl appearances saw Washington run the ball 94 times and throw it only 58 times — and one of those games was a blowout loss.
Dawson threw 17 passes to win Super Bowl IV. Namath found the end zone zero times to upset the Colts. Stabler was John Madden’s perfect quarterback. Staubach was keenly efficient and solid as a runner — he averaged 4.9 yards per carry — while going 2-2 as a starter in the NFL title game.
All these guys were great, but it’s still fair to wonder how they would have fared in a league where passing held greater importance (and was much easier for quarterbacks to do).
The more modern Hall of Famers who underwhelmed
26. Jim Kelly, Buffalo Bills, Super Bowls 25-28
25. Dan Marino, Miami Dolphins, Super Bowl XIX
24. John Elway, Denver Broncos, Super Bowls XXI, XXII, XXIV, XXXII, and XXXIII
Kelly climbed to the mountaintop four times and planted his flag on none of those trips; his Super Bowl passer rating is a robust 56.9. Marino threw for a then-record 318 yards ... but that was aided, in part, by the fact his Dolphins trailed by double digits throughout the second half.
No one in the NFL may have been better at rewriting his own narrative than John Elway. When you think of him in the Super Bowl, you think of an old man spinning like a helicopter blade en route to the Broncos’ first NFL title.
youtube
In reality, he was fairly underwhelming in the big game; three touchdown passes, eight interceptions, and two games (out of five) where he threw for fewer than 125 yards.
But hey, he’s still got two rings, which is more than most quarterbacks.
The non-Hall of Famers who blew up
23. Mark Rypien, Washington, Super Bowl XXVI
22. Jake Delhomme, Carolina Panthers, Super Bowl XXXVIII
21. Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons, Super Bowl 51
Rypien’s 292 passing yards in Super Bowl XXVI were 115 more than his career per-game average. Delhomme shredded the Patriots’ defense with big plays and came within one Adam Vinatieri kick of a ring (just like another quarterback who’s ahead of him on this list). Matt Ryan was nearly perfect, even when he was being asked to throw the ball entirely too often while sitting on a 28-3 lead.
20: Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs, Super Bowl 54
19. Joe Flacco, Baltimore Ravens, Super Bowl XLVII
18. Doug Williams, Washington, Super Bowl XXII
Mahomes couldn’t find any breathing room against the 49ers until he trailed by 10 points in the fourth quarter. Then he led the Chiefs to an 11-point win. He won MVP honors despite a 78.1 passer rating — Brock Osweiler’s career rating is a 78.0. Flacco diced up the 49ers so thoroughly he became a meme. Williams torched the Broncos with four passing touchdowns and a pristine 11.7 yards per attempt, making history in the process.
17. Nick Foles, Philadelphia Eagles, Super Bowl 52
Foles became a Philadelphia legend by being a more prolific version of Hostetler (and catching a fourth-and-goal touchdown pass in the dang Super Bowl).
youtube
16. Jim Plunkett, Oakland Raiders, Super Bowls XV and XVIII
15. Phil Simms, New York Giants, Super Bowl XXI
Plunkett turned his career around after escaping New England, recording the second-highest Super Bowl passer rating of all time (122.8) for players with more than one start. Simms was nearly perfect in his lone appearance in the big game, completing 22 of his 25 passes, throwing for 268 yards and three touchdowns, and even adding a 22-yard scramble to completely demoralize the Broncos.
The modern (or future) Hall of Famers who were great
14. Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers, Super Bowls XL, XLIII, XLV
Roethlisberger has two championship rings, but he’s been kinda awful under the brightest lights; he’s never played a Super Bowl where he’s had more touchdowns than interceptions. Going by title game statistics alone, he belongs in the “inessential” group, but his 78-yard game-winning drive in the final three minutes of Super Bowl XLIII proves otherwise.
youtube
13. Russell Wilson, Seattle Seahawks, Super Bowls XLVIII and XLIX
Wilson would be a two-time Super Bowl champion if not for the only interception he’s ever thrown in the big game. His goal-line interception to Malcolm Butler sealed New England’s fourth NFL championship and derailed the Seattle quarterback’s budding legacy. He’s been essentially mistake-free outside of one jumped slant; he’s averaged 9.8 yards per pass in two Super Bowls while running for nearly 11 yards per carry.
Tumblr media
He also benefitted from a crushing defense and the pile-driving running of Marshawn Lynch, which puts his performance on a curve. (And yeah, I understand considering Wilson and, later, Eli Manning future Hall of Famers is another debate altogether. I say Wilson is criminally underappreciated.)
12. Kurt Warner, St. Louis Rams, Super Bowls XXXIV and XXXVI and Arizona Cardinals, Super Bowl XLIII
Warner has led three different Super Bowl scoring drives that either tied the game or gave his team the lead in the final three minutes. He’s only 1-2 on the grand stage thanks to the heroics of Roethlisberger and Tom Brady.
11. Brett Favre, Green Bay Packers, Super Bowls XXXI and XXXII
Favre remained the personification of an action quarterback, even if he was beaten out for MVP honors in his lone Super Bowl win by a kick returner. His magic ran out against Elway in 1998, however — his turnover on downs inside Broncos territory with 32 seconds left propelled the veteran gunslinger who preceded him to his first NFL title.
10. Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers, Super Bowl XLV
Rodgers was downright mean to Roethlisberger’s Steelers, throwing for 304 yards and three touchdowns as, for one fleeting moment, Mike McCarthy allowed him to reach the peak of his potential.
9. Peyton Manning, Indianapolis Colts, Super Bowls XLI and XLIV, and Denver Broncos, Super Bowls XLVIII and 50
Manning played exceptionally well to get his teams to the Super Bowl. Then, he put together a 77.4 passer rating and a 3:5 touchdown-to-interception ratio. His two title wins were over the No. 49 and No. 50 quarterbacks on this list. As great as Manning was, there’s not a ton of Super Bowl film on his highlight reel.
8. Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints, Super Bowl XLIV
Brees was the best version of himself in his only Super Bowl appearance, completing 82 percent of his passes and dashing advertiser’s hopes by delaying Peyton Manning’s second NFL championship.
7. Steve Young, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl XXIX
Young won three Super Bowls but only started one of them — and what a start it was. He dusted the Chargers for a record six touchdowns, racking up 374 total yards in the process. If not for five years as Joe Montana’s understudy, he might have a strong argument to jump to the first tier.
youtube
6. Eli Manning, New York Giants, Super Bowls XLII and XLVI
Manning was .500 as an NFL starting quarterback in the regular season, but something crazy happened when you paired him up with a dominant pass rush in the playoffs. He was 8-4 in the postseason, with two of those wins coming over Tom Brady and the Patriots with the Vince Lombardi Trophy on the line. His career passer rating was 84.1 — in the Super Bowl, it was 96.2.
The G.O.A.T. arguments
5. Troy Aikman, Dallas Cowboys, Super Bowls XXVII, XXVIII, and XXX
Aikman’s first Super Bowl was his best, a four-touchdown performance that ruined Buffalo’s hopes of snapping a two-game title game losing streak. He was worse in 1994 and still beat the Bills by 17. In fact, Aikman’s been the source of some of the least dramatic Super Bowls in NFL history; none of his three starts were decided by single digits.
4. Bart Starr, Green Bay Packers, Super Bowls I, II
3. Terry Bradshaw, Pittsburgh Steelers, Super Bowls IX, X, XIII, XIV
Starr’s 452 yards over two Super Bowls make him the most prolific passer of the early Super Bowl era. Bradshaw went 4-0 in Super Bowls and his 112.8 rating ranks only behind Joe Montana on the list of quarterbacks who played in more than two Super Bowls. These guys were legitimately great regardless of era.
2. Tom Brady, New England Patriots, Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX, XLII, XLVI, XLIX, 51, 52, 53
Tom Brady in the Super Bowl:
6-3
315 yards per game
18:6 TD:INT ratio
65.3% completion rate
7.2 yards per pass
0 rushing touchdowns
95.6 passer rating
These are very good numbers! But, Brady was pretty subpar in Super Bowl 53, even if he walked away with a win. He threw a terrible interception on his first pass of the night, failed to find the end zone, and completed passes to only five players in his ninth Super Bowl appearance.
But still. Nine Super Bowls. Six wins. And he threw for 67 yards on what turned out to be his team’s game-winning fourth quarter drive. Brady stays at No. 2.
1. Joe Montana, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowls XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV
Joe Montana in the Super Bowl:
4-0
286 yards per game
11:0 TD:INT ratio
68% completion rate
9.4 yards per pass
2 rushing touchdowns
127.8 passer rating
A sixth championship ring might make Brady the better quarterback in the big game, but it’s tough to imagine a quarterback — any quarterback — with a better Super Bowl record than Montana, who was perfect under the brightest lights. Brady has the stronger history of comebacks — he’s led five different fourth-quarter, game-winning drives — but Montana is, well, flawless.
Brady is great, and he will probably hold the record for most NFL championships of any quarterback for a very, very long time. But if you need one man to step up in the Super Bowl, history suggests Montana was the safer bet.

short version | long version
so, fun fact. if you start a playlist in january and add a song every time you really love it or find yourself listening to it a lot, by december you find yourself with... a very, very large playlist. 261 songs, 17 hours and 17 minutes large to be precise. which hey, last year the mix was 262 so that’s a pretty spot on average.
i sort of prefer the long one, but i mean, hey. there’s large playlists, and then there’s listing all 261 songs. so i broke it down into a moderately more digestible abridged version with only 50 songs. if you want the original playlist, the link is there. have fun. til then though, here’s my 50 most played.
i. guts || alex winston i know you're a liar, throw me into the fire man i should have known, i should have known god damn you're a liar, threw me into the fire
This song is one of those where the catchy jingle sort of hides that the meat of it is relatively dark. It’s a gorgeous song, one that I listened to for most of January, and off and on throughout the rest of the year. Alex Winston’s voice is like a dream. ii. sweet dreams || mark hadley ft. dresage Hold your head up Keep your head up, movin' on
This song I actually listened to a lot at the tale end of 2017, because it was released as part of the Wrinkle In Time trailer and it was absolutely gorgeous. This year, I found it on a Stranger Things fanvid and it’s been on my Stranger Things mix ever since.
iii. africa || toto I hear the drums echoing tonight But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation She's coming in, 12:30 flight The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
Speaking of songs that are on my Stranger Things playlist... I’m kind of at a loss as to why this got so freaking popular this year. I mean, it is a truly dope song and I’m super fond of it but like. Was it Stranger Things? Did it just become that anthem of the year? For me, it was that I wrote fanfiction to it and also we played it on loop while we were playing beer liquor pong on vacation. It was... super surreal. iv. go to war || nothing more Hush, my baby, make no sound Maybe we can wait each other out It's a cold war Let's go to war So, this song I actually heard driving home from my friend Alex’s after marathoning a few episodes of The Flash and it just hit me super hard. I mean, it’s a great song for my kind of ships, but also, it’s just a great song. v. smallest light || ingrid michaelson Just because you don't see us Doesn't mean that we don't exist Sometimes the smallest light Shines so bright I think I originally found this song on the Watercast playlist on spotify? And I really liked it, because I like most of the songs on that playlist, but like. I was driving to work one day and like, just got hit with the biggest plot bunny for Will and El as siblings. And like, I just had that bunny and this song percolating in my head for the rest of the day, and the song just kind of stuck with me. This song is Will and El’s anthem. vi. my friends || oh wonder Can I beat within your heart? Can I bleed within your love? Oh my friends
Okay, so like show of hands- who here has read We Were Liars? This is a mostly hypothetical question because I’m not sure anyone actually pays attention to these anymore but I like them, so fuck it. Point is, I was listening to the watercast playlist a lot while reading that book and this song was playing when we made certain discoveries that most of us had already guessed, and it made me cry. vii. knocking on heaven’s door || raign It's gettin' dark, too dark to see I feel I'm knockin' on heaven's door
This fanvid happened around the time I was writing that Will and El as siblings fic and I basically played it and the video that inspired the next song on the list on repeat until I finished. This cover is lovely and haunting and just, such a freaking earworm.
viii. remembrance || balmorhea instrumental Yeah, this is the video. I actually used this song in a fanvid of my own a couple years ago, when I got to make a fanvid for @iki-teru‘s fantastic Yuffie-centric fic All Through the Circling Years which... I can no longer find, so maybe it was taken down? Either way, I loved the song immensely before, but that fanvid with Hopper is so fucking tragic and beautiful. ix. hazy shade of winter || hidden citizens Seasons change with the scenery Weaving time in a tapestry Won't you stop and remember me
There... are a lot of songs on here that are also on my Stranger Things playlist. And I’m a sucker for haunting covers. x. time after time || joseph william morgan If you fall I will catch you, I will be waiting Time after time This is the last of the Stranger Things songs. Well, at least the last of the ones that aren’t Harringrove related. Another fanvid that caught me off guard, because just. Damn. There are so many beautiful fanvids for this fandom, it kills me dead. xi. live in the moment || portugal. the man Come back Sunday morning With that soul to sell When you're gone Goodbye, so long, farewell Not 100% sure where I first heard this one, but it stayed with me for a good portion of the spring and summer. I discovered their song feel it still around this time last year too, so clearly they’re just a real good jam for when you want to feel the sun on your back. xii. killmonger || ludwig goransson instrumental
There are a couple songs from the Black Panther soundtrack on the longer version of this mix, three from the score and one, maybe two from the credits. I freaking loved that movie so damn much, but it’s soundtrack blew my goddamn mind. It is literally all I listened to for weeks, and this song in particular fucked me right the hell up. Just listen to the flutes and the bass. Just, damn. Killmonger, you’ve got the best theme in the entire movie. xiii. daddy issues || the neighbourhood I'd do whatever I could do I'd run away and hide with you I love that you got daddy issues And I do too And heeeere it is. This was the first song that I associated with Harringrove for uh, very obvious reasons. Definitely had this and a few others on repeat whenever I had to write sexy scenes for the boys. xiv. no roots || alice merton I like digging holes and hiding things inside them When I'll grow old, I hope I won't forget to find them 'Cause I've got memories and travel like gypsies in the night
This song hits the same part of me that fell absolutely in love with Guts when I first heard it. Alice Merton’s voice is just fantastic. xv. run for your life || k.flay Bite off the venomous head Follow the chemical scent Look for the hole in the fence Take everything you demand
I got to see K.Flay in concert sometime late last year, and even though I didn’t know her very well (I told my friend that I’d see K.Flay with him if he saw Glass Animals with me) her music was sweet enough that I could appreciate the concert even knowing none of the songs. Let me tell you though, I fucking wish she’d played this song then because holy fuck. xvi. play with fire || sam tinnesz Insane, inside the danger gets me high Can't help myself got secrets I can't tell I love the smell of gasoline I light the match to taste the heat Kuroshitsuji is something I haven’t really thought about in like half a decade. And then I ended up seeing this vid while I was waiting for my connecting plane to arrive so I could go see my family. I only saw the damn thing because it was made by the same person who did this one, which I hunted down because I was reading Yuri On Ice fic on the plane and the point is: pingvi is amazing and all of their vids are a goddamn delight. xvii. the sailor song || autoheart I was your sailor, your demon Your lover, your overbearing best friend Hoping for some attention
So, while I was down visiting my family sometime during the spring, I had a brief dizzying spiral where I fell head over face into the Pacific Rim fandom, because Uprising quite emphatically fucked me up. Anyway, because of this I spent the night after I saw it scrolling through fanart and reading half a decade old fanfiction while my brother was trying to make me pay attention to him. And yeah, that’s how I found this art and listened to this song for like the rest of the fucking year. xviii. warrior || steve james I got my head high, my chest out, my eyes open wide I got no fear, got no doubt and, god, I feel alive I'm not stopping for ya, I'm a fucking warrior
My brother showed me a bunch of fanvids on my first day down there, but my favorite was this one, because I’d recently watched Little Witch Academia and this was so freaking cute and all kinds of lovely. xix. iv. sweatpants || childish gambino Rich kid, asshole: paint me as a villain
Another thing that happened to me that week was the discovery of lipgallagher’s fantastic harringrove fic (shoot the lights out, hide) till its bright out. Which is all kinds of great and lead me to this song and the realization that Donald Glover does music? xx. hello || via audio How could it be Someone could find me Too scary to say hello to This was one of the songs on Damien’s fanmix from The Bright Sessions. And because The Bright Sessions suckerpunched me with feelings, I spent like a month straight listening to that mix and getting into that garbage man’s headspace. It was wonderful. xxi. daddy || emeli sande He's out your system yeah it took you a while You got your family back and you got your smile And you promised your sister that you'd never go back again I spent the better half of this year shipping Harringrove and Mark/Damien, which are both ships that are... well, not exactly the healthiest of relationships. Mark/Damien fucking ruined me. Listening to the last bit of The Bright Sessions was basically physically painful because like, okay. Logically I know that Damien is a garbage person. But also, he’s got a shitty power that would lead to some pretty interesting moral dilemmas even if you were a normal nice person (cough cough Mark), and like. They’re both so fucked up and Damien is so in love with Mark even if he’s not entirely sure how to be a fucking person and I have never had a pairing come after me as hard as this one did. Like it really came after me. Anyway, this was my true Damien/Mark anthem, because it’s fucking perfect and awful and fantastic and I just want them back in my life, guys.
xxii. paradise valley || honey and the sting In the past I lay out on the land Stretched my legs felt my chest expand If we could flow together someday Then we will float away
This here is my most played track of 2018. I first heard it during the special two hour episode of Wolf 359 and the whole end of that episode just blew my mind. So I immediately went to spotify, found it, and have basically listened to it all year since then. It helps that Nick loves it too, so every once in a while he’ll be playing it, which reminds me why I love it and just. It’s so soulful and beautiful.
xxiii. attila the king || nick glennie-smith instrumental
Yeah, I literally have no idea how this made it to the top 50 much less the top five, but apparently it did. It is really good writing music, but still.
xxiv. foolish || lauren shippen The impossible happens every day No matter what you do it won’t go away Don’t ask for more But then what are you waiting for
This was my year for podcasts - in one year I fell in love with Wolf 359, The Bright Sessions, and EOS 10 all over again when it came back for its third season. Near the end of the series though, The Bright Sessions did a musical episode! I listened to it in my car on my way to work and basically spent the entire freaking time smiling like an idiot. Truly my favorite episode. xxv. experience || ludovico einaudi instrumental
The Sense8 finale came out in June and it was absolutely wonderful. This song was playing during the last scene of the series and I fucking cried my eyes out. The song itself is fucking gorgeous, but what’s more is it made that last scene so much more than it would have been if they’d chosen any other song. It truly was, and forgive the corniness, a fucking experience. xxvi. singing in the rain || through juniper I'm singin' in the rain Just singin' in the rain What a glorious feeling I'm happy again I went through a phase in June-July where I checked out a bunch of old movies from the library. The first one was Philadelphia, because it was mentioned in the musical episode of The Bright Sessions and I just really wanted to watch it? But I also picked up Singing In The Rain, because I’d never seen it before and just, damn. I watched it before work and it was raining that day and the drive to work was the most fun because I just listened to different covers of the song and sang my heart out, and I was just so damn happy. It was dumb, and nice, and it probably going to be one of my happiest memories that I take with me into the new year. xxvii. hello stranger || barbara lewis Hello, stranger (ooh) It seems so good to see you back again How long has it been? (ooh, seems like a mighty long time)
I also watched Moonlight sometime in late June. It was one of those quiet nights where nothing really seems good enough, where you feel just a little bit empty inside and nothing is helping. So I watched the movie and read @notbecauseofvictories‘s A Cornstalk Fiddle on my back porch afterwards and the movie combined with the fic and the music turned that quiet empty night into something just as quiet, but a million times more full. Another good memory from 2018 that’ll stay with me for awhile.
xxviii. end credits suite | nicholas britell instrumental From the end credits of Moonlight - I played both this and Hello Stranger on repeat while I finished up the fic I mentioned above.
xxix. ahead by a century | the tragically hip No dress rehearsal This is our life
I watched Anne With An E. I was sad a lot at the time, and got to a part early on in the second season that kind of lead me into an uncomfortable headspace so I actually still haven’t finished it? But it was really nice for awhile, and I hope to go back and finish it sometime.
xxx. achilles come down | gang of youths Just humour us, Achilles, Achilles, come down Won’t you get up off, get up off the roof?
I’m not 100% sure where I found this song either? My gut reaction is that it was a song I found while I was reading either The Cruel Prince or The Goblin Emperor, but I’m not sure. Good song, though.
xxxi. without you | leslie odom jr. The earth turns The sun burns But I die Without you
Oh man, I found this cover one night while I was reading, and like, I was reading, so at first I didn’t really process what I was hearing, just that it was familiar and that I liked it. And then my brain connected the dots and I looked up and saw that it was a cover by Leslie Odom Jr and immediately restarted the song and just listened.
xxxii. natural | imagine dragons Deep inside me, I'm fading to black, I'm fading Took an oath by the blood of my hand, won't break it I can taste it, the end is upon us, I swear Yeah. I like Imagine Dragons. Honestly though - this one might not have made the cut if I hadn’t heard it a few months later on an EOS 10 playlist.
xxxiii. sky full of song | florence & the machine Grab me by my ankles I've been flying for too long I couldn't hide from the thunder In the sky full of song So, a while back there was that video going around where Florence literally sang this song while a storm started up around her, and like, that was the first time I heard this song? That was the first I heard that she even came out with a new album, so I basically sat down and listened to the whole thing, but this one was still my favorite.
xxxiv. broken people | logic & rag’n’bone man Broken we ain't beaten There's no glory in defeat We won't fall into the cracks between our streets
I uh, may have watched a couple fanvids after Infinity War. This was one of them.
xxxv. flesh and bone | black math Break the truth inside of me Climbed down to hell on the devil’s tree I clutched a branch of soot and flame The thought that rose, to scorch my feet
I walk alone Beside myself Nowhere to go
This was another.
xxxvi. nina cried power | hozier It's not the song, it is the singin' It's the heaven of the human spirit ringin' It is the bringin' of the line It is the bearin' of the lie It's not the wakin', it's the risin'
So last year Take Me To Church made it to my Top 38 or whatever I had it narrowed down to, mostly because I went through a Les Mis phase. But I kind of joked on that post last year about Hozier releasing an album next year and how unlikely it was, and lo, here we have it. Maybe not a full length album, but five new beautiful songs.
xxxvii. kol nidrey | the yuval ron ensemble Nidrana lo nidrei, V'essarana lo essarei Ush'vuatana lo shevuot. Maggie Stiefvater posted this song to her blog a couple months ago and I was really fond of it. It’s incredibly beautiful.
xxxviii. stronger | the score I do this with conviction I write truths and never fiction My disease is what you fed I can't stop with my ambition
Oh look, another Marvel fanvid.
xxxix. rise like a phoenix || conchita wurst I rise up to the sky You threw me down but I'm gonna fly So honestly, basically the rest of the mix are songs from Ryan’s OR mix which is an official EOS 10 playlist. It’s phenomenal, and I basically spent all of October and some of November getting stuck on various songs in the mix. xl. heroes || mars zelmerlow Don't tell the gods I left a mess I can't undo what has been done Let's run for cover
Yup. Giving me feels and also super catchy.
xli. cut to the feeling | carly rae jepson Ah, I wanna cut through the clouds, break the ceiling I wanna dance on the roof, you and me alone I wanna cut to the feeling, oh yeah Okay, but like - why did nobody tell me that Carly Rae Jepson had other songs and they were super fucking catchy? I spent the last few days of being a waitress driving to work blaring this and the last two songs and it did fucking wonders for my mood.
xlii. the greatest show | hugh jackman Ladies and gents, this is the moment you've waited for (woah) Been searching in the dark, your sweat soaking through the floor (woah) And buried in your bones there's an ache that you can't ignore Taking your breath, stealing your mind And all that was real is left behind
Breaking news, The Greatest Showman was amazing and I cried. I fucking missed hearing Hugh Jackman sing, and like the fucking lead up, of starting the movie with this song and then ENDING it with this song, with that performance, with those fucking lines (this is the moment you’ve waited for) - was so goddamn energizing. I just could not fucking deal.
xliii. the plains/bitter dancer | fleet foxes I should have known one day you would come All of us walk so blind in the sun Midnight feeder, beggar pleader
Okay, okay. So there's this playlist called Wet Black Leaves that I listened to a lot when I started my new job, throughout rainy October and November, everything was just a little too wet and a little too cold, and this whole mix is so atmospheric and gorgeous. I absolutely adore it.
xliv. always starting over | idina menzel Am I always Starting over? In a brand new story Am I always Back at one After all I've done?
The finale of Wolf 359 fucked everyone up, right? Yeah, obviously. Okay, well the final episode of season 3 of EOS 10 also fucked me right the hell up. Like we’re talking messy crying in the car on the way to your like second or third day at the new job. Anyway, I kind of spiraled and then I went back and listened to Ryan’s mix and found this song and just wanted to kick my heart around for awhile.
xlv. if i could turn back time | cher If I could reach the stars I'd give 'em all to you Then you'd love me, love me, like you used to do If I could turn back time MESSY CRYING. But like, I also really like this song. So MESSY CRYING and also screaming all these words as loudly as I can within the relatively safe confines of my car. I guarantee you that people next to me at stop lights thought that I’d gone through a messy breakup.
xlvi. new rules | dua lipa Three: Don't be his friend You know you're gonna wake up in his bed in the morning And if you're under him, you ain't gettin' over him Okay, but also some of the Ryan songs were catchy in a not heart breaking way, unless you think about the untold story of what exactly went on between Ryan and Akmazian and fill in the blanks and break your own heart.
xlvii. fernando | cher There was something in the air that night The stars were bright, Fernando They were shining there for you and me
Cher did an entire cover album of Abba songs in like, late October, I think? And like, my little gay heart fucking exploded and I listened to Cher singing ABBA songs for like three whole weeks and it was fucking fantastic. This... was actually not my favorite of the bunch until I went into a Barnes and Noble to pick up a copy of The Wise Man’s Fear and had a completely transformative experience when I heard it playing softly over the stacks.
xlviii. it’s quiet uptown | kelly clarkson If I could spare his life If I could trade his life for mine He’d be standing here right now And you would smile, and that would be enough
And after a brief detour into delightful cher/abba combinations we’re back to tragic EOS 10 songs. Additionally, I’m sick of Hamilton songs fucking me up. I get to see it in person in 2019 and I’m going to make a fool of myself when I cry my eyes out in front of Nick and our friends.
xlix. movement | hozier So move me, baby Shake like the bough of a willow tree You do it naturally
And just when I thought we were just going to get the four songs out of Hozier in 2018, we got this gem, which I think I like more than all the others.
l. seasons of love | rent cast Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes How do you measure the life Of a woman or a man?
I will never be over this song. I will never be over this musical. Merry Christmas, guys.
