This is like the first time I've seen someone who knows their phone's battery is crap actually carry a charger around. And for the one on the other end of the dropped call to be like "here we go again smh" instead of jumping to conclusions?? I wasn't expecting such realism from a show where the time machine is a resin art music box

One thing I've been thinking of since the time limited on the time travel was revealed in episode 3 is whether Kawi is ever going to be able to completely "fix" everything in the past so that his present is what he wants or if, at some point, he's going to confronted with the fact that no matter how much work he puts into the past, to actually achieve what he wants he's going to also have to put equal efforts into his present.
I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if, at the end of the series, Kawi finds himself in a present that isn't a complete mess but which still isn't what he dreams of (i.e some of his key and most meaningful relationships are still broken/hanging on by a thread and his career isn't what he knows it could be, etc) with no way of going back. It would force him into a situation where he can't go back to fix his mistakes or stop them from happening and instead has to make amends and take accountability for his past actions in the present. Because that's something he needs to learn, that he will continue make mistakes as long as he lives (we all will) but that he can also try to fix them by being in the present and working towards the future.
You can't live in the past forever, and you shouldn't want to either.

Kawi's Journey with Self-Worth and Pisaeng's Reassurance
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't know how to put it into words, but there is something so nice about Pisaeng always sticking to his guns about what interested him about Kawi was simply that he found Kawi to be cute.
Yes, there are millions of cute people in the world, but it was specifically Kawi's cuteness that intrigued Pisaeng. There was no ulterior reason that he found himself into Kawi, there was no deeper meaning. It's not like Kawi needed to do something to prove himself worthy of Pisaeng's love (even if Kawi thought that he had to.) Instead, Pisaeng was, initially, simply attracted to Kawi and that had been enough.
It's a simple reason that I think that Kawi will always have to grapple with for the rest of his life, probably because even though he may have found a sense of peace and serenity in his life after all the time-travelling, he'll likely still have some minor struggles with his self-worth. Love is not a fix-all, and (again) like what I'm positive has become synonymous with @bengiyo's brand here on BL reviews, "There's no magical dick. It doesn't fix." Even if it happens to belong to Pisaeng. When you have low self-esteem and issues with you self-worth, even when you take the most pro-active methods of care to combat these ideas, a part of it will always remain. Some days will be more of a struggle than others. So while his relationship with Pisaeng will not magically fix insecurities, the fact that Pisaeng is there to reassure him is incredibly important. I really doubt that Kawi will ever be able to fully understand why it was simply his cuteness that attracted Pisaeng, but the constant reminders are necessary in his journey to self-acceptance.
Combine that with the fact that Pisaeng comes from an uber-rich (and political) family, and Kawi spent ten years dealing with very little self-worth, it makes sense that Kawi will never fully accept it, even ten-years down the line into their relationship. Yet, the fact that Pisaeng's answer remains constant and never changes into something deeper than he just found Kawi cute is so critical in allowing Kawi to rebuild his trampled self-esteem.
While I think that compliments like that could potentially come across as either insincere or even shallow, it does more good than harm for Kawi. He spent ten years alone, in his small apartment with no significant social connection and his last true connection (his father) dead. He was detached from human relationships and he placed higher value on what he could bring to the table, doing so he shattered his own self-esteem because he had a sincere belief that he had nothing good to offer.
Pisaeng's consistent and persistent insistence that he adored Kawi due to his cuteness, at a time when Kawi believed that he wasn't worth much, is so important in ensuring Kawi that becomes aware of the fact that human relationships aren't solely transactional. His presence doesn't mean that he has to offer more solely to be loved and particularly a recipient of Pisaeng's love. Pisaeng's answer serves as a reminder of that, even if it's not said or understood outright.
It's a subtle reminder, a reassurance of sorts, to Kawi that he has worth even when he's not aware of it or when he doesn't recognize it in himself. His worth isn't tied to material objects or titles that are expected in fully transactional, interested, relationships. Rather it serves its purpose by becoming a verbal notice to Kawi that for Pisaeng, Kawi will always be enough just by being himself, that he always finds him cute, and that's was enough reason for him to fall in love with him.
Kawi's journey consisted so much of learning how to live in the moment, of learning the importance in actually making decisions, because there's only one thing certain about life: time moves on with or without us. When we live in such a capitalistic society, we often tie our self-worth to our social capital, the achievements that we make, the people we know. In turn, we can end up neglecting and stepping all-over our self-esteem in the moments that we don't reach those "social tiers" and start believing that in turn we have nothing to offer. When you let yourself believe that you're worthless and time moves on, you end up being left behind.
Kawi is worth more than his accolades and job titles, more than any achievements that he may receive. His worthiness derives from his authentic self and who he is as a person. He's loved for being Kawi. It's enough for Pisaeng to find him cute, because Kawi is enough and will always be enough. That constant reassurance is critical in shaping Kawi, allowing him to find his happiness and peace in life. He's now surrounded by the people that he loves and who love him back. He's no longer alone.

i hope that what kawi took from the little speech pisaeng gave him is that yes, we have influence in other people’s lives, but we also have to take into account that they still are their own people, and they still have willpower and free will to make their own choices that influence their own future. you can try to do your best and like pisaeng said, be optimistic that that’ll be enough.

Haven’t been able to stop thinking about the scene between Pear, Kawi, and Pisaeng in EP.7 because I'm starting to believe that Kawi was having an affair with Pisaeng…. not sure how else the writers expect me to interpret it. You’re telling me that right when Pear and Kawi break up, Pisaeng suddenly decides to disappear from everyone’s life… and that’s not meant to mean anything??
Am I meant to ignore how awkward it gets the second Pisaeng walks in? How the smile on Pisaeng’s face drops the second he notices Pear’s suitcase?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How sullen Pisaeng looks as Pear walks out? And how GUILTY Kawi looks back at Pisaeng??
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This scene demands us to overanalyse.
Maybe it was more emotional than physical, but I think Kawi started to drink more to have the excuse of “I only did it because I was drunk, they aren’t my true actions”… an excuse Pisaeng would easily accept if it meant they could continue what they're doing because it's an excuse he's used himself. Kawi was the one who wanted to talk about their kiss in EP.6. Pisaeng was avoid it because, I believe, he was worried Kawi would ask him to "not be so close to him" (again). So, in the future, as they continue to develop their "relationship", all while Kawi dates Pear, it's not hard to imagine that Pisaeng quietly endured a lot of pain in order to just stay by Kawi's side and keep loving him (as stated in the OST 'Unable', which Pisaeng sings to Kawi).
But, of course, Kawi STILL feels guilty every time he seeks Pisaeng out so he drank more to suppress this, starting a never-ending cycle that has led to his addiction.
It makes sense why Pisaeng chooses to run away. I'm sure he believes he's the reason Kawi and Pear broke up. And I'm sure he hates that a part of him may not care if Pear resents him because the happiness he felt being with Kawi, no matter how short, outweighed any rational thought.
Gosh, this future sucks. It's all so... wrong. Kawi went from having nothing in the original timeline to "having everything" and still ending up miserable.

How many times has Kawi dreamt that his father is still alive. How many times has he dreamt that he can hug him. How many times has he wept in his dreams. His mind might think this is also a dream, but his body probably realizes the opposite; this is tactile, he's actually holding his father, and it feels different. The deluge of emotions he's going to go through when he realizes he's actually travelled in time. It's not a dream, and his father is there and he can hold him again.

I think I'm in love with Be My Favorite
This show is for all of us who have made mistakes, for us who have hurt the people we've loved the most, for all the introverted anxious babies who've always felt like the odd one out, the scared ones who have battled demons to say sorry, to ask forgiveness, to every one of us who have inadvertently become the villains in our own story; to us who are trying to be better every day than the last. To all of us who have loved from afar and cried for the lost lives we've dreamt of living, to let go and to everlasting acceptance, to keep fighting the good fight. To stand and try and struggle even if it's not worth much. To just keep living every moment to the best of our abilities.
I think it's safe to say, I'm in love with BMF.

Thinking about how Pisaeng and Kawi were so close that when Kawi moved his lips to say stop they actually brushed Pisaeng's.
Tumblr media
Ferso, I think Pisaeng would've stopped upon hearing Kawi's voice regardless of what he actually said, because it's like he went into a trance upon getting within a handspan of Kawi's face.
Upon hearing Kawi say "don't" he freezes like he was snapped out of said trance, and then like ½ a second later when he would have had time to process what Kawi actually said he jerks back slightly. It's by the time Kawi asks what he's doing that he's really really started to process the situation.
Kawi was only like, minorly flustered because for him "Pisaeng likes Kawi a lot a lot" is old news, but for Pisaeng I feel like this is a revelation. Not the "Pisaeng likes Kawi" part because like, come on, but the "a lot a lot" part. Feel like he might be a little alarmed at how gone he is

BE MY FAVORITE (2023, THAILAND)
Episode 7
After a being beautifully serenaded by Pisaeng (GAWIN CASKEY aka FLUKE) Kawi is moved to kiss Pisaeng (again) and he's drunken (again) or is he? Is Kawi opening up to Pisaeng?
Bonus:

An Epilogue of sorts. Pisaeng gives Kawi a charm as an anniversary of when Pisaeng confessed his love. Oddly it says YOU ARE MY FAVORITE (which was the name of this series when Krist was to co-star with Mike)

Be My Favourite is Queering More than Just the Love Story.
I wrote here about how, at the start of the show, Be My Favourite queers the straight narrative by taking a heteronormative romance plotline (Kawi pining after Pear for years and using travel to Get The Girl) and transforming into a queer love story (in which Kawi falls in love with his love revival).
Now I thought once Kawi and Pisaeng got together that would be us done with the Queering of the Narrative but it seems like this show still has more to give, albeit in a much more subtle way: Be My Favourite now seems to be Queering the lens and structure of the show itself.
We have spent the entirety of Be My Favourite experiencing the story from Kawi's perspective. Yes, we occasionally get glimpses into Pisaeng's or Pear's point of view but Kawi is the character throughout which we, the audience, understand and process the majority of the narrative and is, as such, the defacto protagonist, our lens into the show.
In most "standard" single-lead stories we stay with the same protagonist, the same audience lens, throughout the entirety of the narrative, right up until the very end. After all, why leave a character we have grown to know and understand in the penultimate act? This is the "expected" structure, the "accepted" structure, the (hetero)normative structure.
Not in Be My Favourite however.
In episode 11 our perspective suddenly changes. As soon as the camera follows Pisaeng out of the door at 7:30 instead of staying the the sick Kawi, the audience lens shifts and the roles are reversed: Pisaeng is now the protagonist, the lens through which the audience understands and experiences the narrative, while Kawi, who up until this point has been the centre of our experience as the audience, is suddenly relegated to the "secondary" role of the love interest. The audience lens has been flipped on it's head.
So how exactly is this queering? Well, the queering of a text can take many forms but it's primary function is to challenge and, where possible, deviate from the "accepted", "standard", (hetero)normative structures and this includes the in the very structure of the narrative itself. Just as Be My Favourite queers and escapes the restrictive narrative boundaries of the straight love story by having Kawi fall for his love rival, it is now queering and escaping the restrictive boundaries of the narrative structure itself and challenging the idea of how the story "should be told". Why should Be My Favourite stick to the set (and historically heteronormative) binary of "Protagonist/Love Interest"? Why must the characters be defined by arbitrarily assigned labels? Why shouldn't the character roles be fluid and changeable? Why must things stay the way they have always been?
Be My Favourite says screw "normal" right down to it's very heart and I think that's pretty darn cool.

⚙️ SOTUS x BE MY FAVORITE 🔮
Arthit 🐢 Kawi
Commission for Krist Perawat Brasil. It was supposed to be finished before The Krist Elements Concert but due to me having irl & health problems, it took way longer x) Yet I can finally show it))
Still, I haven't done complex print art in a long time and this was my personal project as well *__* It went through so much hardship (and also I only drew Krist's face a few times before so it was a challenge to create the right resemblance as well). But I'm so proud of the result, look at them!
I will probably be printing a T-shirt or a bag for myself as well xD Somebody commission me to draw Not Me, Bad Buddy, The Eclipse or Moonlight Chicken art prints so I can make an entire Fav Thai BL wardrobe lol

Embracing the Waters of Uncertainty
We've hit the beach episode this week and I can't help but love how they were able to intertwine this trope with a message that is so significant to who Kawi is as a character. Coming from Pisaeng no less. The one that always challenges Kawi to be better, to be truer to himself, to strive for more out of the relationships he's forged with people.
Tumblr media
So much of Kawi's life he been held back by his own fear. His fear of not having enough, of not being enough. He's spent ten years yearning for the idea of Pear because she was nice to him during his Freshman year, but he never took the plunge of actually getting to know her in the first timeline. It isn't until he believes that he has an infinite amount of chances (initially) of going back in time that he readily and willingly makes a move to pursue her.
Desires and fears go hand in hand, Kawi needs to take the step back to reassess whether the fears that he has held onto tightly are actual concerns or he's merely constructing barriers because of his own apprehension of getting accustomed to having people in his life. It isn't until Pisaeng throws himself on him to topple him over that he really allows himself to have fun in the water, similarly Pisaeng is the one that has been making Kawi confront his own fears about his insecurities.
Kawi struggles with the apprehension of facing his perceived failure, of returning to the life of being a translator, where he spent close to ten years alone with no human attachments. He knows what it means to be completely isolated after the death of his father, so he doesn't want to risk stepping into the realm of uncertainty that comes with pursuing what he actually truly wants. He's doing everything that he perceives will make him satisfied in the future, so he refuses to rock the boat. This time around he learned, that no matter how much he tries to fulfill the status quo of wooing Pear, of getting his father the emergency surgery, of keeping Pisaeng as a friend, of making amends with Max, he still ends up alone and distant from those he cares about in the future. His battle of fully playing in the water and getting in the water highlights Kawi's internal battle of desire of having people in his life and the fear of making a false move that would make them leave him.
It's paradoxical, Kawi wants to be happy, and honestly we see him to be at his most happy with Pisaeng, but he's the one that creates the most obstacles for himself in achieving that happiness. One might think it's irrational that he wants that happiness, he just might have that happiness and he's unwilling to accept the inevitable consequences of accepting it, but this man is only starting to grow from the shame that he has clung onto. Like @lurkingshan said, in this episode we see Kawi interrupting his own growth arc, he still has to put in the work. In episode 6 we saw Kawi finally starting to self-reflect, hanging his head just like the Wisteria flowers, and realize that his unchecked emotions of shame and anger cause him to push others away when they're only attempting to help him. He was starting to learn that allowing people to help you and depend on them doesn't drive people away, but how you react to that help might. Yet, by moving to the future, he put a pause to the much needed self-awareness and growth. He made his own obstacles that caused him to be alone in the future, again.
Getting wet for Kawi is an illustration of his perception of risks that he runs in attempting to fix his future. Just as getting wet can be inconvenient, he's still facing drawbacks. He gets everything done on his checklist, but he goes back to a future where he's an alcoholic. This Kawi has driven everyone away from him. I don't think that we'll ever fully receive an explanation for that Kawi, but I wouldn't surprised if his drinking stemmed from the loss of his dad, like he said about in the first timeline, his world stopped with the loss of his dad. But as @chickenstrangers said, it's important for Kawi to see the imperfect future, because it's motivation for him to see that sometimes no matter if you complete the checklist, it might not give him the future that he wants, because life isn't that predictable.
Kawi has to take the first step to confront and overcome his fears. Like @stuffnonsenseandotherthings said, there's going to be a moment where Kawi has to realize that he might not ever be able to completely fix the past so he gets the present that he wished for. Growth and progress isn't linear, but one still has to be willing to confront and overcome their fears to achieve the path of fulfilling their desires. This means willing to face potential setbacks, or in Kawi's case, learning to be okay with the fact that he won't ever able to completely fix the past. When you live so much in the past, you forget to appreciate the present, and with Kawi living in between timelines, it's so easy for him to develop a fear of failure, but if he examines and self-reflects on what he truly desires, then he might just learn that the future is nothing to fear and accept that change can still happen in his present with the choices he makes.
