what a lovely evening!!!
dipped out of work early to hang with my fiancé's college buddy who was in town for exactly 3 hours, as well as two more local buddies whose presence he summoned. two of those men bestowed upon me the honor of witnessing the powerful male-male hug i've ever seen. lifted off the ground, legs fully wrapped around!
i then took an quick 5 pm nap and woke up to a delivery of shepherd's pie. from there met up w the remainder of our party for a cécile mclorin salvant show. outside the doors some lady gave me a bouquet of flowers with no explanation. weird but did not bring down my well honed good mood brought on by receiving multiple compliments on my hat.
cécile, absolutely delightful. had the mildly gratifying sense that my command of French hasn't entirely departed when i heard "il m'a vue nue." the encore was a medley of kate bush's wuthering heights and breathing. how you say effervescent.
then saw a college mentor who'd attended the show with her wife. another great hug
rounded out the day with a bracing walk in light rain. my fiancé is now making me tea and more pie. we will end the night catching up on the latest episode of dungeon meshi.
i am kissing anyone who reads this on the forehead

Kate Bush - Hounds Of Love
Kate Bush was already an avant garde pop rock icon, but when ahe released Hounds Of Love she reached both her artistic and commercial peaks. Side one contains several of her biggest hits and deals with themes of anxiety, loss, the fear of being known, and the fear of being unknowable. All the while Bush toes the line between catchy pop melodies and grandiose avant garde compositions. Side two is a different beast. From And Dream Of Sheep until the end of the album it loosely tells the story of a woman drowning under a frozen lake. The songs are more etheral and less traditionally composed, and the lyrics become more abstract, fearful, and introspective. Listening to Hounds Of Love is a little like listening to two EPs back to back, one that I know all the words to and then one that is too harrowing to even want to sing along with.
Tumblr media
Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
It's baby Jay-Z back from before he was famous! Obviously his talent shows through here but I can't help but feel like Reasonable Doubt is on the list mainly as a 'here's where it all started' showpiece and not for the album's minimal merit. The features from Biggie and Foxy Brown are highlights and its all very good but standard mid 90s hip hop. Jay-Z is also rocking a bit of that mafioso flair on his first couple records. Its cute, but the trend was short lived for a reason. He's a little too corny to take seriously especially when the cocky ass Hova from The Blueprint and The Black Album are there for comparison.
Tumblr media
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
I'd feel corny throwing around phrases like 'unparalleled masterpiece' but honestly what else really sounds like A Love Supreme? Its the ultimate evolution of the modal jazz genre. The album is a single continuous piece split into four movements and the thematic elements of each movement start of simple and evolve into cacophonous orgasmic noise. Of particular note are Jimmy Garrison's four note bass line that set the foundation for the whole album, McCoy Turner's piano solo on Resolution, and the unbelievable drum solo by Elvin Jones that starts off Pursuance. A Love Supreme is one of those rare things that actually lives up to the hype, it really is one of the best pieces of music ever recorded.
Tumblr media
James Brown - Live At The Apollo
There's a reason that every James Brown album on here has been a live album. He sings funk and soul music with the energy and enthusiasm of a preacher. He sings the gospel of funk. The way Lost Someone plods along for ten minutes only to erupt into the medley that closes out the album is basically musical edging. He literally has the audience screaming in anticipation constantly.

Rock Hard Festival@Amphitheater, Gelsenkirchen, 17.-19.05.2024
Die Dänen D:A:D zelebrierten ihren 40ten.

The Legendary Kiki & Herb Return to San Francisco to Do a Holiday Show at the Curran
For the primary time in 15 years, Kiki & Herb are on tour, and they’re bringing the most recent iteration of their vacation spectacular, “Do You Hear What We Hear?” to the Curran Theater for one evening solely, December 9. For these unfamiliar, Kiki and Herb are the legendary cabaret characters created by Justin Vivian Bond and Kenny Mellman approach again within the Nineties. That’s after they first carried out off-Broadway vacation exhibits and non-holiday exhibits mixing dry banter, harrowing drama, bitter cabaret variations of Nirvana and Radiohead tunes, and a manic homage to the wizened outdated dames of an earlier period. Bond’s self-described “boozy chanteusy” Kiki, who’s of indeterminate age, is the kind of singer who will get progressively drunker and louder earlier than your eyes, and Herb is her long-suffering, sometimes supportive accompanist. The pair went off to do their very own stuff within the final decade, sometimes coming again collectively to revive Kiki & Herb in New York — however the final time they carried out outdoors the town as these characters was 2007, they usually final did a New 12 months’s Eve present in San Francisco on December 31, 2005. Mx. Bond has been a daily performer at Joe’s Pub at New York’s Public Theater, and followers had been heartened after they did just a few dates of a vacation present in December 2021, practically two years right into a pandemic. Because the New York Instances described their earlier vacation oeuvre, “In fright drag, with age make-up crisscrossing her face, Bond’s Kiki would stalk by means of the group like a bloodthirsty elf, savaging vacation carols and performing medleys that intermixed ‘Rudolph the Purple-Nosed Reindeer’ with ‘Suicide Is Painless.'” And as Mellman, an authentic member of the band The Julie Damage, places it, “It appeared like a present to an viewers that wouldn’t essentially be going house for Christmas, wouldn’t essentially have the very best relationship with their household.” However now Kiki & Herb are again on the highway this vacation season, kicking off a six-city tour in Boston and touchdown in San Francisco on Friday, December 9. They’re going to be acting on the grand Curran stage, through the between-shows hiatus on the theater following the latest closure of Harry Potter & the Cursed Little one. Tickets go on sale tomorrow, October 18, at 10 a.m. at BroadwaySF.com. Mx. Bond obtained their begin within the 90s drag scene in San Francisco, alongside the likes of Heklina, acting at golf equipment like Membership Uranus on the EndUp. And there have been occasional solo, non-Kiki exhibits at Oasis, Feinstein’s, and different SF venues lately, together with a Pleasure present earlier this yr. As Bond instructed the Instances final yr, “I created the character of Kiki through the AIDS disaster. I used to be a teenager in my 20s, a avenue activist. I felt like saying all of the issues I needed to say as myself would sound too strident, too earnest. To have this boozed up outdated one who had achieved all of it, seen all of it, I might say something as this character.” Bond added, “I introduced components of individuals I actually knew into Kiki — very intimidating, very good ladies who had simply gotten a shit hand dealt, who someway grew to become these superb creatures. In order that was all the time there. Herb was based mostly on this man who labored in a piano bar that we carried out at typically, this single man who would drink tequila and had an image of his cat on the piano.” Suffice it to say, IYKYK, and very like Taylor Mac’s “Vacation Sauce” in 2018, that is certain to be the occasion of the vacation season. Beneath, a few clips of Kiki & Herb preserved on YouTube, together with Kiki’s tackle Kate Bush’s “Operating Up That Hill,” carried out again in 2007. The Genius of Steve Lacy’s ‘Bad Habit’
The Genius of Steve Lacy’s ‘Bad Habit’
This has been a strange year for popular music. In the winter, a chaotically catchy cha-cha medley from a Disney movie took the title of No. 1 song in the world. Then a 37-year-old anthem from one of music’s great oddballs, Kate Bush, did the same. Right now, another singular tune is making a surprising climb up the charts, though this time the hit also represents a familiar occurrence: the…
