because I am also Indian, I want to also point this out. freedom for colonized people everywhere also means freedom for Kashmiris that are under a brutal Indian occupation. the right to self-determination for all colonized people everywhere, from Palestine to Kashmir to Ireland
a good book to read to learn more about the relationship between Israel and India is “Hostile Homelands” by Azad Essa. India is looking to Israel treatment of Palestinians as a blueprint for its own crimes against Kashmiris, Muslims and Dalits. India is also complicit in furthering Israeli settler colonialism in Palestine - the Port of Haifa is currently partly owned by Adani Ports & SEZ, the founder of which is one of the wealthiest men in India, Gautam Adani (won’t come as a surprise that Adani is also very close to Modi and the BJP)

A note: I know annoying Desis are going to see this and go "Oh but Kashmir is Pakistan's because-" and "Kashmir is an integral part of India because-". I must make my stance clear: Kashmir belongs to the Kashmiris, the natives, no matter what religion they belong to. Neither Pakistan nor India get to decide the matter of Kashmiri sovereignty. The reasons given by both parties as to why Kashmir should be a part of either nation are bullshit. The United Nations itself recognises Kashmir as a disputed region, so I will not entertain dumbfuckery. I highly encourage fellow Indians especially to take the time to go through and properly understand the violence the government enacts on Kashmiris. I've also included links to learn more about Kashmiri culture because really, what do the rest of us know about it? Culturally and linguistically Kashmir differs so much from the rest of India and Pakistan (also the amount of fetishization of Kashmiri women...yikes). This is not just a bilateral issue between these two nations over land, this actually affects the people of Kashmir. And if you're still here, thank you for reading

Kashmiri Pandits Face Targeted Killings
In Indian-administered Kashmir, there has been a rise in the targeted killings of Kashmiri Pandits. Hindu minorities from other states of India living in Kashmir have also been targeted allegedly by militants.
The targeted killings have increased after the BJP-led government revoked the special autonomy of the region. The government subsequently changed state-subject laws of the state, giving rise to fears of demographic change. The erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir (now a Union Territory) was the only Muslim-majority state of India. Read More

Booker Prize-winning Indian author Arundhati Roy could be prosecuted for allegedly seditious comments made over a decade ago, after a top official in Delhi said there was enough evidence to lay charges.
Roy rose to international prominence for her novels, including 1997 Booker Prize winner “The God of Small Things,” but has also published two collections of political writing andlongbeen an outspoken critic of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.[...]
Earlier this month, police in New Delhi raided the homes of prominent journalists linked to a left-leaning news organization known for its scrutiny of the Indian government. Police said they had arrested the outlet’s editor and a colleague as part of an ongoing investigation in connection with India’s Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, or UAPA, an anti-terror law that critics describe as “draconian.”[...]
The case was filed in 2010 over comments Roy made at a conference on Kashmir called “Azadi – the Only Way Ahead” – “azadi” means freedom or liberation and is often used as a slogan for the Kashmiri independence movement.[...]
In her 2010 speech, posted online, Roy spoke about Kashmiri efforts to seek justice, in part for the mass exodus of Hindus from Muslim-majority Kashmir in the early 1990s amid increasing violence.

Today is Republic Day, a celebration of the unity and diversity of the nation so it seems like a pretty good day to say this: do not make our differences our weaknesses. do not scorn the ones who are not as well versed as you. do not put down people just because they have a different view tha you. do not try to glorify your own beliefs by belittling the beliefs of others.
we're a country of 28 states yes. but we're also a country of eight religions, 22 official languages, thousands of years of history both shared and individual. we're a country whose freedom was won not by a hindu or a muslim or a sikh or a christian, but by indians.
when the words "We the people of India" were put on paper, they weren't put there with any exception. we all have a guarantee of freedom, liberty, equality and fraternity. and right now, when everything seems to be trying to tear us all apart and turn us against each other, it is a good time to remember that we're a country whose constitution was primarily drafted by a buddhist, whose first prime minister was a kashmiri pandit, whose atomic energy program was lead by a parsi, whose most regarded athlete was a sikh and whose space program was pioneered by a muslim.
Our differences are not our divisions.

How Kashmir and Palestine are Connected through Illegal Occupation
I just found out (although it’s not old news) that Israel plays a huge part in India’s illegal occupation of the state of Kashmir.
It shows just how extremist the government of India is against Muslims (and other minority religions), and how Israel is pushing their “religious war” agenda.
Kashmir is a Muslim-Majority state, under military occupation for the past 4 years by the Indian army. The people cannot walk just any street, there is military everywhere, and violence is very, very common and encouraged as the army has free reign to kill, rape, and commit other heinous acts…just like in Palestine.
When the Indian population sees this type of support for their government from Israel, it further pushes the extremist agenda that Kashmir and Palestine do not deserve freedom because their own government is telling them a “religious conflict”. So, if the Zionists support the Hindu-extremist BJP government in an occupation war against a Muslim state, then the Indian extremists support Israel in their occupation against Palestine.
Which is exactly what is happening. Everywhere on social media, a significant portion of Indians, mainly Hindus, support Israel despite the clear-cut atrocities they commit against the Palestinians.
Why? Not only because their own government supports it, but because it’s the same atrocities they fully support that are committed against the Kashmiris.
Before anyone tries to tell me the BJP Government is not extremist, they have allowed the multiple:
burnings and destruction of mosques
vicious attacks against Muslim families (not unlike Palestinians)
allowed the state government of Uttar Pradesh to BAN zabiha halal meat (the largest state of India)
as well as against other religions as well
And no, India has NO RIGHT to occupy Kashmir; it deserves be a free state
As a Pakistani, I’ve constantly seen how the situation in Kashmir and Palestine have gotten so much worse. I don’t have much of an audience on Tumblr, but I try to do what I can

As a HINDU and an Indian, we've always stood and will stand with Israelis and Jews. We love and respect our historical ties. I hope you will also stand with us Hindus, the genocide and exodus of Kashmiri Hindus and forced conversions of Hindus in Pakistan and Bangladesh is concerning and no one's batting an eye on it. I hope both of us post about the concerning growth of hate towards Hindus and Jews on our Tumblr to raise awareness.
When we say that the Jews have a long memory, we usually direct it at those who have hurt us, but we also remember our friends. We will never forget the Hindus who stood with us and offered us solidarity and hope. Likewise, we will support and uplift Hindu voices as you fight for freedom and dignity in your ancestral homeland and around the world. Our sacred texts tell us not to stand idly by the blood of our neighbor. You are our neighbor and our friend, and we will not stand idly by as the world ignores the persecution you have faced. Hindu-Jewish solidarity forever!

Freeing Palestine is India's fight
I've seen lots of posts about how Western countries and their populations should be concerned for stopping the genocide in Palestine but Indians are involved in this as well.
India has a HUGE Islamophobia problem, from the day India became what it is, this country exists the way it does through conflict regarding religious majorities and it is a problem we must acknowledge.
Collective punishment has often been carried out indiscriminately against Muslims in India- Muslim people's houses in Madhya Pradesh have been demolished without warning. This has also happened in Uttar Pradesh and in 2023, Haryana(300 businesses and homes). These were all normal innocent civilians who had proper legal paperwork showing their purchase and ownership of their home and land, but the police did not care. In many of these instances the police stood by and were involved in demolition and all of these were under BJP-majority and ruled areas. The recent Ram Mandir was built on the demolished land of Babri Masjid(it was built in the 14th century before India as it was even a THING, its destruction & demolition on the claim that it was Ram's birth place is unfair). Hate crimes against Muslims run amok and there are multiple cases of violence against Muslims in India.
PM Modi of the BJP party has been consistent in maintaining positive relations with Benjamin Netanyahu and the occupying force of Israel. A majority of the military equipment for India comes from Israel, and India has constantly been neutral in UN council meetings when decisions regarding Israel are brought up. A spyware called Pegasus, developed by the occupying force of Israel was used to surveil politicians, journalists, activists etc severely breaching right to privacy and threatening freedom of speech.
Worse; India has been using the Israeli strategy of colonizing Palestine with Kashmir. Jammu & Kashmir is a union territory which basically means they are allowed to function independently on most fronts but India has been seeking to integrate J&K into itself and has been extremely hostile to its Muslim citizens and are currently intensifying their occupation efforts. There have been consistent internet and communication blackouts since 2018 and it is STILL ongoing.
India invited Israeli officials to Kashmir to open 'Centers of Excellence' which are supposedly for agricultural innovation but everyone in J&K are concerned and see it as India taking an opportunity to intensify its occupation with Israeli help.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, several Kashmiris told Middle East Eye the Israeli agriculture hubs would deepen India's occupation in the region and accelerate its settler-colonial project. "Earlier, we would draw the parallels between Kashmir and Palestine or India's intimate alliance with Israel. But now they are bringing Israel to the Valley in the form of these institutions - which will be "agro-oriented" in name - but we all know that Israel will physically help India in Kashmir to turn it into a proper Palestine," a Kashmiri academic based in Istanbul told Middle East Eye.
In 2016 Coalition of Civil Society said there are more than 8000 'disappearances' of people in J&K. There are mass graves with over 2000 bodies being found with these unlawful activities being attributed to the Indian Security Forces. That's just scratching the surface of decades of violence and human rights violations enacted by India.
BJP is not shy about its ties to the RSS and promotes Hindutva(I've seen people citing the literal meaning of the word as evidence that it is harmless but the word is a label given to an embraced by extreme right-wing groups who are open about their Islamaphobia. Meaning of the word becomes pointless when actions speak otherwise).
India is an occupying force on J&K, it's suppressing Muslims, demonizing them and further marginalizing them in the name of 'Hinduism'. It buys from Israel and endorses them. As Indians, it is key that we do whatever we can to stop the genocide because we are unwittingly being used to fuel this and are being radicalized to hate on our neighbors, the people we share our land and history with.
Even outside of the ways in which the current government is shamelessly supporting Israel, India's history is rife with colonization. The British had occupied us, forced us into fighting each other, into prioritizing meaningless differences to suppress each other. We were once starved by occupying forces, violated, killed. Our land is also covered in blood shed by colonization.
What are we doing if we don't speak up? If we don't stop this? Do not follow the propaganda conflating extreme right-wing ideologies with the identity of being Indian. Don't buy into the idea that India is "for Hindus", we are so ridiculously diverse, there are 100s of languages and religions in this country.
Free Jammu & Kashmir, free Palestine, stop Islamophobia.

hey, would you have any reading recs for the following topics (separately): kashmir situation or indo-pak enmity in general; veganism; capitalism; social media/the internet and its effects
hi! here you go —
kashmir, indo-pak situation
these are things that are on my list. i've tried to keep a diverse list but obviously, it isn't exhaustive and you're encouraged to both scout more and keep in mind the positions that different authors come from
languages of belonging by chitralekha zutshi; also her kashmir's contested pasts and kashmir: history, politics, representation which is an edited volume
the generation of rage in kashmir by david devadas
kashmir: behind the vale by m j akbar
understanding kashmir and kashmiris by christopher snedden; also his kashmir: the unwritten history
the kashmir dispute by a g noorani
shooting for a century by stephen cohen
kashmir in conflict by victoria schofield
the people next door by t c a raghavan
capitalism
empire of cotton by sven beckert — looks at the origins and history of capitalism through how the production of cotton underwent a change in the 18th and 19th centuries
capitalism, socialism, democracy by joseph schumpeter — i always support going back to the very basics; looks at how the three are related and if they go together or not go together
the great transformation by karl polanyi — looks at how the 'free market' developed and how a lot of the things that modern economic theory holds to be natural to us are really things that had to be made and fought for
capitalism & slavery by eric williams — it's really a critique of imperialism through what williams argues is an intrinsic link between capitalism and slavery
capitalism and freedom by milton friedman — how and if capitalism can be the road to economic freedom and if it can enhance democratic promises; somewhat offsets the critiques i've bombarded you with
i don't have anything on veganism and i'm not sure i have anything on the effects of internet or social media either; i've been more interested so far in more personal essays on either. but i hope the rest helps!

This is definitely a book about Palestine, but it is also so much more.
It is a book about the hypocrisy, greed and disregard for human rights by the “good guys”.
It is about Israel providing arms to the brutal Hutu regime in Rwanda before and during the genocide.
It is a book about Israel supplying arms to General Pinochet and the junta in Chile and negating the US arms embargo.
It is about Israel supporting and arming Iran under the Shah, death squads in Colombia and the apartheid regime in South Africa.
It is about Israel supporting the Argentinian dictatorship, knowing that they were torturing Jews
It is about Israel currently supporting Russia in the invasion on Ukraine.
Ceausescu's Romania, Duvalier’s Haiti, Suharto’s Indonesia, Somoza’s Nicaragua, the list is huge
It is a book of governments spying on their citizens to suppress democracy, dissent, homosexuality, religious freedom or any civil liberties expected in society today.
It is a book about Facebook, Google, Instagram and Twitter suppressing the voices of Palestinians and Kashmiris and allowing hate speech from Israelis and Indians.
Books like this always take me a long time to read because I find many parts so difficult to believe that I have to check the facts myself; I haven’t managed to catch the author out on any of his assertions.

Thinking about Salman Rushdie's depictions of nationalism, and how it really strikes home how influential (ironically so, at times) the diaspora plays in terms of shaping and defining nationality and nationalism. The fact that the Sikh terrorists hijacking the plane as a statement in support of an independent Khalistan are speaking Punjabi with Canadian accents in The Satanic Verses. Or how, in Shalimar the Clown, "The Kashmiris of England, in Birmingham and Manchester and London, could dream on about freedom," while "the Kashmiris of Kashmir were shivering, leaderless, and very close to defeat." How it's often people removed from the reality on the ground that are most vocal, most willing to sacrifice others for their cause.

SRINAGAR, India, June 2 (Reuters) - A Hindu bank manager was shot and killed inside his office in Kashmir on Thursday, police said, as a wave of targeted killings drove more Hindu families to flee India's only Muslim-majority federal territory.
Vijay Kumar was attacked by a suspected militant inside a branch of the Ellaquai Dehati Bank in southern Kashmir's Kulgam, where a schoolteacher was shot dead on Tuesday, local police said.
"He received grievous gunshot injuries in this terror incident," Kashmir police said in a tweet, later adding that Kumar, originally from western Rajasthan state, had succumbed to his wounds.
At least 16 people - both Hindu and Muslims - have been killed in targeted attacks this year in Kashmir, where India has been fighting an armed insurgency since the late 1980s.
A little-known militant group called "Kashmir Freedom Fighters" claimed Thursday's attack on social media, telling non-locals not to settle in the Kashmir valley.
"Anyone involved in the demographic change of Kashmir will meet the same fate," said its statement, the authenticity of which could not be immediately verified by Reuters.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government in 2019 split Jammu and Kashmir, then India's only Muslim-majority state, into two-federally administered territories, promising to improve development and security in the restive region.
Both India and neighbouring Pakistan claim the Himalayan territory in full, but control only parts of it.
But New Delhi's reorganisation raised concerns among some local communities that the federal government may use it to alter Kashmir's demographic by bringing in more outsiders.
'WE ARE NOW SCARED'
Rattled by the recent spate of assassinations, scores of Hindu families, including those from the minority Kashmiri Pandit communities, have begun fleeing Kashmir in recent days. More than 100 Hindu families have left after the schoolteacher's killing, a community leader said on Wednesday.
A rebellion by Muslim militants in 1989 led to some 250,000 Kashmiri Pandits fleeing the Kashmir valley because of killings of Hindus and attacks on their homes.
But many, like Sanjay Kaul, were lured back to Kashmir by the previous federal administration with the promise of government jobs and better security.
"After recent killings we are now scared and fear for our lives," said Kaul, a schoolteacher who left a government-built Kashmiri Pandit colony along with his family on Wednesday.
"We demand re-location outside Kashmir till the situation normalises."
