no but this is so true actually and i feel like we could all benefit from internalising the message that romance can’t be strictly classified by a concrete set of rules bc it doesn’t always look the same for everyone and only the people involved get to define their relationship

Going to try and draw something daily, could easily spend another couple of hours on this tidying it up but I'm trying to embrace the messy bits

Finally drew these designs! And also finally drew some Sumikano. Perspective on this one nearly killed me and it still looks super wonky, sorry...

Yuri Is My Job ch63

Fun chapter and a great cliffhanger! Most of the other discussions I've seen about the last page seem to believe Sumika is taking down Kanoko's photo because she's about to turbodump her, but I'm not really sure that's the case here.
excuse me while I talk on fast forward a bit and point to a chalkboard a lot:
From an objective standpoint, Kanoko's behavior has absolutely undermined the trust in their relationship. But I don't think Sumika is looking at this from an objective standpoint, she's looking at it as someone who has been crushing on Kanoko for a while now.
Sumika is definitely coming into this relationship with an "I can fix her" mindset, and Kanoko being hopelessly tangled up over Hime is not news to her. There's also Sumika telling Kanoko "I won't ever push you away again, so don't you run away either, Kanoko-chan" or calling their outing a date to Kanoko's face the next morning, which I don't think are really signs that Sumika is wavering in this relationship. If anything, the idea that there's a breakup inbound sorta reads as wishful thinking that she'll go back to Nene, despite it being less than a day after reconciling over earth that Nene burned and salted years ago. Even during their date, Sumika is still trying to work out if she's even friends with Nene again.
Anyway, I think the reason Sumika is taking down that picture is because she finally is seeing Kanoko make that smile at her. A visual collage to make the point:

I think Sumika is feeling hopeful at the end of the chapter. Her biggest desire for the last four volumes is seeing Kanoko smile at her like she does for Hime, and now it's happening. She doesn't need a picture of Kanoko smiling for Hime to feel close anymore, she can just be close to Kanoko instead.
I kinda feel like the relationship drama that's brewing is less with missed timing on catching feelings for one another, and more that they're incompatible with one another in their current mindsets. Sumika generally has a good head on her shoulders, but I think her overbearing tendencies are going to pigeonhole Kanoko as "victim" and stifle the growth she's starting to show. Kanoko's love language seems to be service, and every time she's asked what she can do for Sumika in this chapter, she's basically been shot down with "a relationship isn't a debt". I honestly love this ship but there are going to be a lot of growing pains if this goes the way I suspect it's going.

i really enjoy how kanoko functions as a deconstruction of the "best friend who quietly holds a one sided crush on the mc but never takes action and is content to let her get together with someone else" trope that's really personified by Cardcaptor Sakura's Tomoyo. Yuri is my job says actually living like that would twist you into a total mess of person with SO many issues. It says the only person who would willingly choose to live like that would be someone so isolated, deeply anxious, and terrified of rejection that they basically live in fear.
This isn't to hate on CCS Tomoyo of course, that series was a childhood favorite and foundational for me as a person. But i did always find it kind of odd how Tomoyo was so ready and willing to accept that her feelings would never be returned. She has a few moments where she seems a bit melancholy about Sakura being straight and knowing her confession would be rejected if she ever tried it, but overall she's weirdly at peace with it for a girl her age. She happily steps aside for Syaoran. We are told that as long as the person she loves is happy, she's happy.
Kanoko is basically trying to be Tomoyo, but it turns out thats kind of a messed up mindset to try and maintain long term if you dont plan to move on from your crush. i particularly liked when she said her dream is to be hime's maid in her mansion when she becomes a rich trophy wife and sumika looked at her like girl, what. Far from being a saint like Tomoyo we see that kanoko is a sad lonely teenager clinging to the one happy thing in her life. And while thats a lot messier and darker, it also feels a lot more realistic.
