Spoilers for those who haven't played

It was pretty speedy on the first half up until Mr. L showed up. FREAKING LOVE HIM. HE'S SO GOOFY WHEN TRYING TO BE EVIL...AND HE'S ALSO OTHER THINGS IN MY HEAD BUT I'm gonna keep it rated G huehuehue.

Where the hell did SQUIRP GO. I love him 😟. He was a sweet baby boi. I see the implication of what happened after giving away the pure heart...

Tippi having a TINY crush on Mario was FUCKING ADORABLE

Bowser was an absolute chad of a character. He and Carrie was such good combo to cheese everything. I even cheesed the final battle that way. Got the....THING cornered and won pretty quickly!

The cloud area was a PAIN in the ass. But then again, most of the levels after the green door were. I had....so many apples...until it dawned on me a little too late that i didn't have to PICK ALL THREE FROM EACH TREE.

The Luvbi bit LEGIT made me tear up a little.

Dimentio snapping everyone away was funny in a sense because I can see why Bowser and MAYBE Mario ended up in hell while Peach was in heaven. BUT WEEGEE, MY BOI. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO END UP IN HELL AS WELL?

I KEPT forgetting to use Tippi for clues almost all the time. So when i finally got used to her gimmick, the game takes her away. Francis, go jump off a ✨CLIFF✨

so you complained about the lack of proper heart/door-to-world colorization in half the chapters

as far as i can tell the background in world 4 should have green tinge instead of blue

Okay so funny thing but Chapter 4 is one of the Chapters that I consider themed good.

Space is super duper cool and the dark blue mixed with lighter and darker stars it already has is phenomenal. I would not for the world want it changed.

This is more from art experience but green is a colour that likes to be balanced out (most colours do frankly but green is a little special). It's a hue that pops out a lot, so unless its intentional, often than not you'd want to use it controlled amounts. It's easier to stare at blue than green. The green sky would be pretty at first but soon would become very difficult to look at for an extended period of time which is something no one wants. It also helps obstacles and doors stick out. Not to mention space is often associated with dark blue in media.

I think what makes up in terms of being Pure Heart themed, to the space part being blue/black, is: your companion, Squirps, and the colour scheme of the Whoa Zone. Squirps assists you most of the journey in space, he's neon green and sticks out in his surroundings, not to mention the floating green squares and alien doors in the moon walking part. The Whoa zone has green on the floor, doors and walls as well as a greenish-blueish tone in the background.

There's plenty enough of green in this chapter. Just the right amount really. Again theming and palette great, level design arguable...

If you're curious which chapters I consider well colour themed its: Chapter 2, Chapter 4, Chapter 7 and Chapter 8.

I've actually redesigned the first part of Chapter 1 at one point [og post here for context], I'm considering finishing it and maybe doing the same to the other ones that I didn't mention above or maybe all.

Misconceptions I had about Super Paper Mario when I was a kid

I played the game as a kid. A wee lad, if you will. I know there is some dialogue that debunks some of it, but I either forgot that stuff or my kid brain completely skipped over it. And when the art style is so geometric, it's not hard to misunderstand the art. Here we go:

I'll start with Dimentio because he's real popular with tumblr. I thought he was a woman

I also thought the ends of his poncho were his arms,

as drawn here.

I thought the text at the end of 4-4 meant that Squirps fucking died (Text squished together so I can fit the pic limit)

But nope! You can find him after completing the game at the end of the Woah Zone

I thought the collar of Bleck's cape was hair

I thought Grambi and Jaydes were divorced💀. Yknow, living seperately, their daughter having to travel between them. You can't blame me, my parents were going through a divorce

I thought Francis' ponytail was like... a bandana end? Or like the tie to a ninja mask? Idk man. I just didn't think it was hair

I thought Merlon's pendant thingy was his mouth. I still can't unsee it💀

I thought Thoreau's "fingers" were his hair and he had an afro. I honestly didn't get that he was hand-shaped

Characters

This chapter will be dedicated to all those characters who accompanied us on our adventure for the pure hearts, so I hope you like it :) 

Queen Jaydes, Grambi y Luvbi

Queen Jaydes is the kind-hearted (but strict) queen of Underwhere. As ruler of The Underwhere, she possesses power over life and death. Queen Jaydes is named hence the god of the underworld in Greek mythology, Hades, as well as "upset," meaning "unenthusiastic" or "bored" (both qualities she possesses). Fun fact: she bears a certain resemblance to the Queen of Shadows.

Following Dimentio's defeat, Jaydes travels to The Overthere upon learning that Luvbi has returned to life. There, she promises to give Luvbi all the love she can and encourages the heroes to visit her to judge her when they finish her games, as thanks for her hard work.

Gambi

His name is a portmanteau of "grandfather" and "Nimbi."

Just as Jaydes is based on Hades, the ancient Greek lord of the underworld, Gambi may be based on Zeus, the sky god and ruler of Mount Olympus in Greek mythology. Additionally, as The Overthere also borrows from Christian theism, certain aspects of Gambi are shared with God, such as his position as head of the angelic Nimbis and his conflict with Bonechill (whose story closely resembles that of Lucifer). However, Grambi is not credited with creating the world or life and is neither omniscient nor omnipotent.

Luvbi

Su nombre es una combinación de las palabras "amor" y "Nimbi". Tras la derrota de Bonechill, Luvbi asume su verdadera forma para salvar todos los mundos. Después de salvar todos los mundos, Luvbi se recrea como una verdadera chica Nimbi independiente del Pure Heart blanco. ( A/N: Tengo una teoría que explica cómo, así que mira el capítulo de Corazones puros;))

Her name is a combination of the words "love" and "Nimbi." After Bonechill's defeat, Luvbi assumes his true form to save all the worlds. After saving all the worlds, Luvbi recreates herself as a true Nimbi girl independent of the white Pure Heart. (A/N: I have a theory that explains how, so check out the Pure Hearts chapter ;))

Fun Fact: Luvbi plays a similar role to TEC-XX from the previous game, in that they both make a sacrifice to help Mario and his friends at the end of Chapter 7, only to be inexplicably revived upon Mario's defeat the final boss.

fter the heroes defeat Mr. L in the heart of the Whoa Zone, Squirps reveals to them that he is the prince of a forgotten kingdom, Squirpia, and that his mother, Squirpina XIV, was entrusted with the Pure Heart by the Ancients. She then placed Squirps in a hibernation capsule for 1,500 years, so that he could lead the heroes to the Whoa Zone when they arrived in Outer Space. After relaying his mother's message to them asking them to save all worlds, the prince hands over the Blue Pure Heart. The post-chapter narration reads that, his quest finally done, Squirps lay down near the statue of his mother and closed his eyes to rest. He was presumed dead by the heroes; however, returning to Outer Space at any time afterward reveals that he had only fallen asleep, and the player can replay the chapter as normal.

After beating the game, the heroes can find Squirps in the Whoa Zone near his mother's statue, assuring her of the world's safety and that he would restore Squirpia someday.

Tipptron, with her tattle says: His full name is Squirp Korogaline Squirpina. It seems he is actually the prince of a space kingdom... He dreams of ascending the throne someday. I'm sure he has what it takes...

Some fun facts: Squirps' reaction to being fed a chocolate bar can be seen as a callback to Gourmet Guy from the original Paper Mario, who acted similarly when fed Cake and also impeded Mario's progress in Chapter 4 of that game.

He is also somewhat similar to Flavio, as both claim themselves to be gourmets and are initially hesitant to accept the edibles Mario brings them.

Excluding enemies, Squirps is the only character in the game who flips into 3D as the player does; this is the case even when they visit him in the Whoa Zone.

Squirps is the second character in the Paper Mario series to fall asleep and be mistaken for dead by Mario and co., with Admiral Bobbery being the first.

Thoughts on luvbi? I think she’s funny

I love Luvbi so much. Literal icon. She’s so it’s so preppy in here core. I actually have 3 year ongoing beef with one of my friends where I hate Squirps (not actually I’m just goofing) and love Luvbi, but she loves Squirps and hates Luvbi. We’ve gotten into screaming matches because of it

I also think it’s INSANE that Grambi and Jaydes created her. Why did they do that. Why were they tweaking that badly

Pansy sat off to the side in the Eighth Year common room, reluctantly constructing the whimsical silliness that was a gingerbread house. Utterly ridiculous, and needlessly difficult. Just like most things in her life as of late. McGonagall seemed to be on a mission to torture the students that had decided to return for an eighth year at Hogwarts—which Pansy suspected was some sort of bitter payback for the ruins the castle was left in after the battle.

Decorating the Great Hall for Christmas was one thing, but constructing tiny homes for biscuits was taking the mick. Pansy knew there were elves loitering about that would piss their tea towels in excitement at the mere idea of such tasks—and yet, here Pansy was, with icing-sticky fingers and a vendetta for a holiday-themed biscuit.

“Oh, that’s lovely!” said a jarring voice that Pansy knew all too well.

For fuck’s sake. The last thing Pansy needed right now was the grating presence of the witch that just could not seem to wrap her head around the fact that Pansy did not want to be her friend—so-called redemption be damned.

Pansy resolutely ignored Hermione Granger, pretending that the gingerbread nonsense before her was actually enthralling work and that she just could not afford to take her attention off it for a minute. Oh, perhaps a snowflake here. And a sprig of holly there.

“You really do have an artistic flair,” Granger said, not at all put off by the fact that she might find a better conversational partner in a brick wall.

In her rage, Pansy squeezed too hard on the icing bag and—

“For fuck’s sake, Granger!” Pansy jumped out of her seat, whirling on the witch, who stared at Pansy’s ruined house with sad eyes. “Can’t you tell when to leave someone the fuck alone?!”

Granger blinked slowly, focusing her wide eyes on Pansy. “I’m sorry for distracting you, perhaps we could share my gingerbread house inst—”

“I’m not sharing,” Pansy cut her off. “Especially not with you.”

Pansy was sure she didn’t imagine the hurt that flashed across Granger’s face, but it was gone almost as soon as it appeared.

“Alright,” Granger snapped, all niceties suddenly forgotten. She stuck her nose in the air and narrowed her eyes at Pansy, before turning around and stomping away towards the girls' dorms.

Pansy stood—awestruck at what had just happened. Did she really just succeed in scaring Granger off? Pansy grinned at her success, but the smile slowly melted from her face as she peered at her gooey mess of a gingerbread house.

Pansy’s gaze then travelled slowly across the common room, to the half-decorated gingerbread house that sat upon the desk Granger frequented.

And then to the door that Granger had disappeared through in a flurry.

An odd emotion struck Pansy in the chest, almost like—guilt.

Pansy closed her eyes and willed the Gods to give her strength to overcome this odd new weakness of hers. And yet, the pain in her chest persisted

She opened her eyes and they immediately landed on Granger’s abandoned gingerbread house.

“Circe help me,” Pansy mumbled to herself, “for I have truly lost the plot.”

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Silence.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

“What?” snapped a voice on the other side of the door.

Pansy sighed, swallowed her pride, and spoke, “Granger, it’s me, it’s—”

“Parkinson?” Granger’s voice was decidedly more cheery than it had been moments before—almost hopeful.

“Yes.”

There was silence for a moment, but when Granger spoke again her voice was louder—closer, as though she stood just on the other side of the door. “What do you want?”

Pansy looked down at the finished gingerbread house in her hands, and then back up at the closed door before her again. She didn’t know how to say it without sounding like a fool, or without making herself vulnerable. Pansy wasn’t used to sharing anything—but least of all her feelings. And this felt like territory too close to the truth for comfort.

So, she deflected.

“Goyle was seconds away from eating your gingerbread thing so I thought I’d bring it to you. So, uh, I’ll just—I’ll leave it outside. Don’t step on it on your way out because—”

The door opened. Pansy paused, half-crouched on her way to place the house on the floor.

Granger stared down at Pansy with a quizzical raise to her brow. But when her gaze caught on the house, her eyes gleamed. “You finished it.”

Pansy quickly stood up straight again. “No, I fixed it. Your walls were all wonky, and it would have toppled over before I reached the dorms otherwise.”

There was an amused twist to Granger’s lips. “You decorated it, too.”

Pansy looked down at the red and green icing she’d added at the last minute. And she shrugged. “I had spare icing and I can’t use it on mine, so…”

Granger grinned so wide Pansy was sure she could count all of her teeth if she tried. And then she laughed, and Pansy’s heart skipped a beat. In terror, she was sure. Nothing else. That would be absurd.

“You are something else, Pansy Parkinson,” Granger said. And Pansy should be offended by the words, but instead they spread warmth through her cheeks.

Granger took the house from Pansy’s hands, their fingers brushing in the exchange, and gave her one final smile—softer this time, a curiosity in her gaze.

“Thank you, Parkinson—for sharing.”

Pansy’s heart did that odd little flutter again, her body reacting to Granger in a way that she did not understand. She returned Granger’s smile—and felt equally as insane as the witch before her as she did so.

Oh no, Pansy thought. She was in deep, deep trouble.
