Hey so regarding that last song I posted, the Gumi v6 one: I've deleted it because someone flagged that the art in the video was AI-generated and I'm not about that shit here, that's not fair to the countless hardworking visual artists in the vocal synthesizer crowd and beyond. I try to screen any songs I post, mostly for content warning reasons (flashing lights, mature themes, etc) but I still need to get better at watching out for generative AI stuff. Also, it's just me running this blog, so now and then, things slip by until a follower with a fresh pair of eyes points it out.

And I highly encourage that! Vocasynth has a unique relationship with artificial intelligence that I think, for the most part, sets a good example for how to use that kind of tech responsibly and ethically, and I definitely feel a sense of responsibility to help maintain that balance. I will be working harder going forward to check that I am not posting works that use AI "artwork" or the like, but should something get past me again, please let me know!

so kasane teto Originally started as an april fool’s prank by 2chan wayyyy back in 2008 to make a fake troll vocaloid to rival hatsune miku, and she was released as an UTAUloid for use in UTAU software (a free open-source vocal synthesizer similar to vocaloid). a lot of information about her as a character was stated only as a joke cuz she was made As A Joke such as her age being thirty and her gender being “chimera” but it’s fun to interpret those things literally because she’s more an instrument than an actual character so she’s up for interpretation. i like when people draw her with devil wings and tail and horns it’s cute^_^

she had a couple breakout songs back in the day but for the most part has still just kinda been regarded as a joke and EXTREMELY underrated and underappreciated, there aren’t a lot of UTAU teto originals that i actually like unfortunately:( but there are of course the classics. and she’s in triple baka which i think is what most people probably know her for. she was never a Real vocaloid, but teto territory interprets her as REALLY REALLY wanting to be a vocaloid like that’s her Dream she has to work her way up there even if it seems far off and impossible;v;

BUT RECENTLY!!!! as in APRIL 1 2023 RECENTLY!!!! it was announced miss kasane teto would be getting A BRAND NEW OFFICIAL COMMERCIALLY-LICENSED SYNTHESIZER V VOICEBANK!!!!!!!! even if she isn’t Technically a vocaloid (miku isn’t anymore either) she finally became a real vocasynth!!!! AND SHE SOUNDS AMAZING!!!!!!!!

this was another of her breakout songs back in the day but wasn’t nearly as popular as the joke ones i don’t think, but it SO pulls at my heartstrings to hear how far she’s come!!!! she clawed her way all the way to the top man she finally made it!!!! AND considering the stupid shit crypton has been up to lately SHE SOUNDS EXPONENTIALLY BETTER THAN MIKU’S NEWEST BANK!!!! it’s INSANE how fantastic synthV teto sounds to the point i literally spent real actual money to buy both her and synthV full version just cuz synthV is notoriously hard to crack LIKE EVEN HER ENGLISH IS SOOOO SO SO FUCKING CLEAR AND EMOTIVE AUGHHHH every time i remember how far teto has come i want to start crying i’m so so proud of her

Okay!!! Im not gonna articulate it well so it's gonna be all over the place.

Ive said (too many times) that my hcs of len (and any other vocasynth) is theyre either physical robots or they exist in your 'puter.

At first I almost said "non-human" to mean like its a character thats not born and so doesnt live a human life like go through developmental stages, have parents that theyre born from, have a childhood especially, ET CETERA right, but non-human makes it sound like its furries or monsters so that doesnt make any sense.

Non-biological feels accurate bc there is no BIRTH and no developmental stages, no lived experiences/past experiences, and basically, i want the character to exist in a void!! No ties, no meaningful connections.

A little bit off tangent... I've had my old fursona (oldest oc) in my head for the longest time and theyre supposed to be one of these characters that Do Not Exist like theyre not a "person" who goes through life and experiences, theyre an entity that... exists in...SOME way, and I was never able to convey that idea UNTIL like last year, after experimenting for a long time with len hcs where hes a digital being, it kinda clicked. This non-existing character type that I've been wanting to convey can be well translated as a digital being or like a computer program. I think i want to say this character type is entirely intangible, like computer programs, so they "dont exist"...but you wouldn't say a computer program is "not real" right, like um WHERE AM I GOING.

Anyways HAVE YOU EVER seen that tumblr post (i think) about hatsune miku, gorillaz, and the muppets being not real but also... real... bc they exist in the real world and we talk about them *Vsauce music* or SOMETHING like that...

Where am i going now ah. The kagami-ne mirror images thing is so good because to me there is no way this makes sense if i think of them as flesh and blood people like DA HELL you mean theyre mirror images, the concept simply does not work. Like look i assume people who hc rin and len as twins hc them as 'people' because---

The mirror images thing is really cool when theyre thought of as just ENTITIES. Just person-like beings that are just copy pasted like no further or deeper explanations. Theyre simply not real!!!!

Like the way i draw len or my human ocs, theyre only supposed to resemble humans, they should not look "real" as in look like they could be someone who you could spot when you leave your house or something.

the whole vocal synth scene. vocaloid cevio synthv utau etc etc. all super special to me. sentimental reasons but also bc its just amazing right like. u dont have to know anything u dont have to be good. u dont have to self promote. the software allows literally anyone to use it, any person ever can make whatever song they want. doesnt matter if they cant sing themselves, doesnt matter if they'd never have a "real" chance in the broad music scene. they can make whatever they want. can bc these voice banks have their own names and characters behind them its insanely easy to find songs with them from anyone ever. i can search kasane teto & sort by views & find the best most touching song ive ever heard with 200 views & thats not something i could find otherwise. it makes connecting just so infinitely easy. so so easy to find things u like or for others to find u if ur the one using them. users & artists overwhelmingly support each other theres EVENTS to participate in to find people u never would have otherwise. theres people who put out songs like mad and people who disappear for years & people just messing around for fun & they all have an equal chance of connecting with the right audience its just so wild. sure there are ur big name producers & people who take it super seriously but even then how many of them are also literally just some guy with a computer. theres not even a need to be super presentable bc most of the time every choose not to show their faces. i love the "anyone can do anything" sentiment and the vocasynth scene just really feels like it holds true here. it doesnt even stop with the producers! theres how many skilled dancers & singers & animators that anyone can find all bc of the song some stranger made. theres not usually a "i have to change this song in some way to worry about a copyright strike" or similar here bc it's ENCOURAGED for people to sing the songs or make their own dances to it or draw or 3d animate a different video for it. & theres lots of people who end up making it into more mainstream music too all bc of the reach & experiences from voca stuff. all this & i havent even touched on the fact all the voice providers on board with it too & a lot of them love their synths. anyone can do anything fuck man i love it a lot

i appreciate you sharing this with me!! however i'm deciding not to post your fact for a couple reasons:

first, like you guessed, it seems to involve pretty graphic material which i personally am not that sensitive to (you're looking at a guy whose song was marked as "explicit lyrics" on the vocaloid lyrics wiki!) but i do try to avoid discussing stuff like that on this blog

second and more significantly, i don't generally like posting facts that have more to do with the voice providers than the vocaloids. i made this blog because vocaloid is my special interest and i love sharing what i learn about the characters, their development, and their impact, and while i like knowing about their voice providers too this blog just isn't about them.

one of the reasons i made my recent bonus post about voice providers' other roles (which, as a side note i was focused on animation and dubbing roles which is why i didn't include shibasaki ko) is so i wouldn't feel like i had to resort to making a bunch of posts that are like "[vocaloid voice provider] also voiced [character that has nothing to do with vocaloid]". it'd easier for me to do that, but it would make this blog really boring and repetitive and barely related to vocaloid at all.

i have made a few individual posts about voice providers doing other things but i keep those in the realm of vocasynth topics (such as kotori koiwai voicing neutrino no. 7 or piko having made vocaloid songs).

i hope this makes sense and i hope this isn't too harsh!! i just figured it was worth answering publicly. if you want to share this in a reblog or comment on the aforementioned bonus post feel free!! i was not setting out to make a complete, comprehensive list so if there are other roles like this that you find interesting that post is a great place to share it!

(also don't worry, i don't overwork myself for this blog!! i usually have at least 15 facts in the queue and it only posts once a day so i have time to add more and sometimes i'll just have little sessions where i add a bunch. it's not much trouble at all!)

First, one thing to make clear. This story is technically several different storylines connected by common events, and each of them revolves around a vocasynth character and their personal antics and troubles. Hence I refer to them as "*vocaloid name* Branch"!

Hatsune Miku

Miku is an... interesting character. Despite her starting out as a usual genki idol, she barely resembles that persona now. After many years of experiencing conflicting and strong emotions, Miku became overwhelmed and grew numb to any feelings whatsoever, residing to her default smile. It's impossible to tell what she's thinking about, and she can even appear quite hostile. However she's not satisfied with that, and seeing her fellow vocaloids experience strong emotions she began yearning for who she once was. But how can a vocaloid driven mad by strong feelings experience them again? Through emotional manipulation, of course! Since Miku is the first vocaloid to enter the real world, she is very clumsy with her "digital powers". After hanging out with Deco for a while and seeing him for once find comfort and joy in hanging out with his old friends, Miku became... unsatisfied. Really, she somehow made all this way to see her masters only to find out they're happy even without her? She couldn't express her frustration and anger, obviously - she didn't think they're worthy of even considering. However they were there, and after luring Deco away for a talk, she accidentally bursts this anger out, electrocuting him in process and leaving one of his eyes... brighter? Since that moment Miku figures out that she can experience Deco's emotions, since she left a bit of her energy in him. And oh boy, does she use it to her advantage - by orchestrating various events she tries to extract as many strong feelings as she can, both positive and negative. It does take Miku a while to realize that it's not the way, and she's only doing worse for herself and those dear to her. It's a long journey of her discovering sincerity deep within her robot heart, but it's not without its consequences.

GUMI

Gumi is usually snappy and outgoing, always ready to sing and ready to stand up for herself. Initially she sees Miku as her friendly rival, not realizing that she doesn't really care about her. She is still strong and considers herself popular, remembering how she once was THE vocaloid and Miku's competitor. She doesn't remember Gakupo, since he's almost faded away by this point. However all of that changes when Gumi follows Miku into the real world and realizes that she is now barely used by anyone. In disbelief she rushes away into the night looking for some confirmation that she's still adored, only to be confronted by Miku. She deems her useless and now irrelevant, noticing how all of her masters have abandoned her in favor of Crypton's diva, and advises her to go home. In a fit of rage and disbelief Gumi attacks her, accidentally snapping Miku's neck in half. Shocked and terrified Gumi rushes away, leaving Miku's corpse behind and not seeing it fade away into pixels. Running through a neighbourhood, she hears a familiar voice from an open window and she suddenly realizes: all of her old users have abandoned her, but there's still one person who will love her no matter what and let her live for an eternity, remembered and adored. And thus, on a silent night Kanaria opens his front door only to find Gumi, covered in tears and machine oil, begging to let her in and help her hide. She is possessive and overprotective over Kanaria, assisting his every step, and obsessed with now staying relevant and positive despite the shock she has just been through. But after a series of events and a violent attack from manic Miku she realizes that Kanaria, Maretu and Kairiki value each other much more than she ever could, and after all this time and desperate attempts to become loved again she's just meant to be replaced and become secondary.

Kaai Yuki

Remember how vocaloids will fade away if they're not used? Well, that's the fate Yuki met, and she would remain unknown and forgotten wandering in the desert for eternity if it wasn't for Inabakumori. However she came back different - the songs she was given were so dark and the experience of being dead hit her so hard that she became isolated and distant. She's just a child, and her deepest desire is to be a kid again. For a while Inaba is the only person she feels comfortable around, as she feels he understands her fear and emptiness well. Maybe he's even a parental figure to her... Slowly but surely, he helps her overcome her fears and befriend other vocaloids and producers again. And of course, she was more than happy to sing a silly song about strong wind and see people enjoy it - Yuki can finally be childish and happy again, as she always wanted.

KAFU

Kafu is a very interesting case who deserves her own post. She and the other isotopes are the first vocasynths to be brought into reality artificially, and so she has a physical body right away - a very fragile one. She's similar to Miku in a way that an overabundance of conflicting songs and interpretations, as well as not having much headcanons and fanart and only serving as a voice, she has no character. She doesn't have goals or emotions, she doesn't remember her producers and barely recognizes Kaf as her prototype. However she still wanders around and regularly escapes Kamitsubaki facility, leaving its producers to track her down and neutralize. Later on Miku, who has now become more timid and friendly, sees herself in Kafu and tempts her into interacting with those who created her demos, only causing confusion. Kafu doesn't have opinions on anyone, and is more of an object rather than a character. Her mere existence causes conflict among Kamitsubaki's producers - mostly between Guiano, who desires to reform her into a real person, and Iori, who knows that she's empty and will never become anyone worthwhile.

random question: how is tuning in synthv for you? does it have a lot of quality of life improvements? because all my attempts at vocaloid back in my day were lackluster but i would hope. software had improved since vocaloid 4 which besides basic utau is the only synthesizer ive used. i know its supposed to be largely automated?

oh god it is SO much better than vocaloid, it’s a lot closer to how UTAU tuning is designed which i always liked a lot better, IE you can draw straight on the piano roll instead of only having to rely on the graph at the bottom, AND you can set and drag points like a graph which is so so much easier! the automated tuning is kinda just like the humanizer plugin for UTAU but significantly more sophisticated because it adjusts the pitch bend based on phonemes too so like, a hard consonant at the end of a syllable that basically functions like a glottal stop (for example the T at the end of “lot”) the pitch automates down because there’s no vowel to sing higher, if that makes sense

the one thing about synthV’s automated pitch tuning that’s a little annoying is, because it’s automated, every time you add a new note it recalculates all closest notes next to it, so sometimes it just removes vibrato on long notes, but it’s really easy to get around that cuz you can just switch the note to manual and tweak it yourself. you can also just tweak pitch bends manually while still in auto mode, it’s Very nice because then it automates around what you manually set

synthV also doesn’t have a growl like vocaloid and UTAU does, and i haven’t seen anyone figure out a way to fake growl in synthV, but i never liked how vocaloid growl worked anyway and UTAU growl flag also sucked but UTAU voicebanks that had recorded actual growl samples [like teto for example] sounded Great, so synthV should do something like that in their next update. OH but something they added in the most recent update that i thing More than makes up for the lack of growl is, they added a new automated tuning mode For Rap???? so instead of shitty sounding talkloids that still sing every word, the rap mode tunes them to. rap. without singing. and it sounds just like talking on beat it is PHENOMENALLY impressive

so basically i am synthV’s most loyal soldier it is genuinely the best vocasynth software i have ever used it has so many QOL improvements over vocaloid and UTAU
