Beto O'Rourke is taking the 2.5M walk with Opal Lee, the Grandmother of Juneteenth, today. Opal Lee is a huge reason Juneteenth is a federal holiday. In 2016 she walked from Fort Worth, Texas to D.C., 2.5M a day, to symbolize the 2.5 years it took news to reach the remaining slaves in Texas that they were free. She was 89. She walked 1400 miles hoping to make Juneteenth a federal holiday.
She tried again in 2019 to make the walk but it was cut short by covid (I can't even do any math on how long this walk must take for her).
Last summer, Biden signed the bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday with her in attendance.

She walked 2.5M last year on Juneteenth. She's walking 2.5M today. But she doesn't have to walk all the way to D.C. ever again.
I keep saying it, that Beto guy understands optics. I don't know if Greg Abbott knows who Opal Lee is....

Juneteenth is now a federal holiday and it's being recognized by more companies and states every year. Juneteenth is also being quickly commercialized as we saw with Walmart's Juneteenth ice cream fiasco and is in danger of just becoming another day off.
Cookouts and Juneteenth ceremonies will be everywhere this weekend, and that's okay. But let's not lose the meaning behind the holiday.

At 95 years old, Opal Lee is showing no sign of stopping. Her life's story — including her famous trek from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C., to call on lawmakers to make Juneteenth a national holiday — has since become legendary, earning her the name "Grandmother of Juneteenth.". Watch her discuss her work yo make Juneteenth a national holiday.

Alright guys, I know it's Pride Month, but let's go take a small break to talk about Juneteenth.
This is the day the we celebrate for the end of slavery. And no, I'm not talking about the Emancipation Proclamation, or all that. I'm talking about the day everyone was released. Juneteenth marks the day that the last slave was free.
I am an African American young Lady, who had no idea about this. I thought, up until now, Juneteenth was just extra black history month. I was incorrect. I don't know my heritage. It had to take a YouTube search for me to truly understand it's meaning and I still don't.
Europeans, they took everything from there slaves. Their culture, their heritage, their names. They took the way of life for the Africans, and changed it. Not only was it changed for the slaves, it was changed for any future generations. How many African American people, actually know the true meaning of Juneteenth.
To me, my heritage, my culture, is apart of who I am. I am still figuring that out. If I don't know who my people were, how am I supposed to figure out who I am. So yeah, I am a little ticked off. I deserve to know my heritage, and Europeans had no right to take that away from me.
I don't blame Europeans today for things like this. They aren't to be blamed. But what I do think is that this Juneteenth, we should all take a moment for our heritage. We should all take a minute and actually figure out what the barbecues, and the parades are for.

Juneteenth
From The Erēmos Journal Editorial Team
June 19th celebrates the day that the last enslaved people in the Confederacy learned that they were officially free. They learned this in 1865, over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation freed enslaved people in the Union.
It’s frustrating to think of the custom of delay in the history of black liberation. Emancipation almost 100 years delayed from white people declaring their freedom from England. Two years delay on the freedom of black enslaved people in the Confederacy. Segregation and redlining delaying education. Racist legislation delaying opportunities.
For being “the land of the free”, America certainly finds ways to procrastinate the freedoms of black Americans. How could they call July 4th “Independence Day” knowing millions of black Americans were being kept down? Those in power understood the oppression required to secure their own freedom, understood that they could have more as long as black communities had less. This is still understood by leaders and corporations today. And with all our generation’s advancements in black liberation, the words of Fannie Lou Hamer remain true: “No one is free until everyone is free.” America’s sins cannot be atoned for until our nation’s most powerful untwine themselves from the evil constraints of greed and prejudice, until they understand that sentiments are essentially meaningless. Juneteenth shirts in Target are great, but reparations are due.
Juneteenth is a day of celebration. A joyful song dedicated to progress and pride deserves to be sung today. By everyone. American culture would be lusterless without the contributions of black Americans and the tremendous waves they’ve made in the ongoing quest for inalienable freedom and equity.
May we never accept delay in the freedoms of Americans ever again, and may you all have a happy Juneteenth!
