June and Serena laughing at how dumb the ceremony for the childbirth is while those two women are screaming and Aunt Lydia is talking and the handmaids are praying is one of my favourite scenes now. They were misbehaving like little children. They couldn't let them be friends cuz they would've been too powerful together if they were on the same side.

Fractured

I’m in the minority, maybe, of people who liked 5x07 of THT. June and Serena have a complicated relationship (to put it mildly). They are both enemies and allies and they slide between the two almost effortlessly as the situation changes around them.

It made sense for June to be the one to deliver the baby because it enabled her to work through some of her own trauma. Admitting she doesn’t want Serena dead is a BIG step in healing. They’ve slid back into allies and, I think, essentially buried the hatchet (for now, at least).

The real key here, I believe, however is that Luke has only just begun to process his own trauma of being separated from June and Hannah. Serena awakened the anger in him with her comments about his lack of action and digs around June having Nick to support her. That was the catalyst for his false bravado in going after that information, but it isn’t sustainable for him. When he called immigration on her at the end, it was him reverting back into fighting in the way that he knows how - by letting everyone else do the dirty work. He was smugly satisfied when Serena was cuffed to the bed and begging for help, but I don’t believe that June was.

June may be momentarily vindicated by the sight, but she gave Noah back to Serena because she believes the baby belongs with his mother. Her lived experience of being separated from her children gives her, IMO, a soft spot for Serena in this situation. Luke basically picked up the hatchet that June buried and is now wielding it for himself.

So, therein lies the rub. As close as he and June have become in the present, they are still MILES apart mentally. Will June be able to let him take his revenge for his pain or will she think HER experience trumps his and be an ally to Serena despite Luke’s feelings?

Luke will never be able to understand the bond that June, Serena, Nick, and Lawrence have. A sort of “The enemy of my enemy is my friend,” vibe. As much as they may be at odds with each other, they’ve been forced to work together to accomplish common goals as allies within the confines of the society in which they live. They’ve built a trust based on that. So, next week, when Lawrence tells June about New Bethlehem, she will trust him and Luke will be skeptical. He will be distrustful based on what he knows of Lawrence because he does not KNOW Lawrence the way June does. And if she asks Nick about New Bethlehem and he tells her to trust Lawrence, she will with absolutely no questions asked. Because she trusts Nick with her life. Literally. This will begin to fracture their marriage. June will risk anything for Hannah because she knows Gilead. But, Luke, ultimately won’t be able to. He will continue to question her decisions. Regardless of Nick and June’s feelings for each other, I don’t believe June and Luke can overcome that.

Super long one for June and Serena’s story!

I don’t really ship them romantically like some people do, but I recognize the chemistry and the actors have. So, for that reason, I do look forward to seeing how their story ends in the final season.
