Junkers Ju 87A Stuka, unit, location and date unknown. Early model Stukas had these very large wheel coverings, which were removed from the B model onwards and replaced with more streamlined versions. Car ( the pilots?) is possibly a '37 Lancia Aprilla. The Stuka was famed for its ruggedness and survivability. Here, a crew pose by their aircraft shortly after it failed to pull out of a dive over northern France, 1940.

Hans Rudel was, by a huge and almost unbelievable amount, the single most successful combat pilot in human history. Rudel was credited with the destruction of 519 tanks, one battleship, one cruiser, 70 landing craft and 150 artillery emplacements. He claimed nine aerial victories and the destruction of more than 800 vehicles. And the fact he did all that, and survived the war in a freaking JU-87 Stuka! I can't imagine how not one allied pilot or ground gunner managed to shoot him down! The Stuka was a slow and easy target for even the worst model of fighter planes of the era! Luck? He was die hard about following proper, established combat doctrine. Never taking unnecessary chances or trying to do more than he could do. The Red Baron's success and Eric Hartman's success was totally due to that kind of doctrine. They always and only attacked with the proper tactics and would only open fire "when the enemy filled the windscreen." Hell Richthofen was actually not a very good pilot at all! Reading about him revealed the frustration he caused his instructors during training and how he always had trouble with landings or flying formation! Lol
