Reposted from @nativesonnow “Black men loving Black men is a call to action, an acknowledgement of responsibility. We take care of our own kind when the night grows cold and silent. These days the nights are cold-blooded and the silence echoes with complicity.” — Joseph Beam, Brother To Brother: Words From The Heart - Be loving to yourself and others. - Check on your strong friends. - Be gentle with yourself. 📷 @advancedstyle // @sageusa #Love #Life #BlackGayLove #Grateful #BrotherToBrother #Gay #Queer #Brotherhood #SelfCare #LoveIsLove #Beloved #LoveWins #Seasoned #Elders #JosephBeam #Community #OurVoice #OurStory #OurPower #NativeSon https://www.instagram.com/p/ClT6jJDLC4H/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This week as a part of the celebrations of #PRIDE and #Stonewall50 I was included in the #StonewallForever digital living monument created by @lgbtcenternyc and supported by @google and part of the @nationalparkservice Humbled to be a part of history for my activism and @nativesonnow doesn’t begin to express my feelings and gratitude. I am living in my purpose and grateful to the Black gay men who came before me who fought, served and sacrificed for our freedom. #JamesBaldwin #BayardRustin #MarlonRiggs #EssexHemphill #JosephBeam and so many unnamed Brothers. #WorldPride #WorldOfWilbekin #WOW #NativeSon https://www.instagram.com/p/BydlpXxpjsW/?igshid=1vq4oe48erf40

Found Joseph Beam's anthology "In the Life: A Black Gay Anthology" @artaidsamericachicago. Beam "began collecting the material after years of frustration with gay literature that had little mention of Black gay men." Never seen this book in person before. #artaidschi #artaidsamerica #artaidsamericachicago #JosephBeam #IntheLife (at Art AIDS America Chicago)

#Repost @theaidsmemorial (@get_repost) ・・・ . . #JosephBeam (December 30, 1954 - December 27, 1988) was gay right activist and author who died of AIDS three days before his 34th birthday. . “When I first started telling people I was gay, publicly, in my late teen and early 20s, and imagining the possibilities of my life as an openly gay black man, I came across Beam. . Beam gave me the courage to continue to speak up, to continue to fight, to continue to show up with all my parts whole and find beauty in the work. . So when I "became" a campus activist, and one of my friends decided it was more important for him to be an Alpha than be friends with me, I returned to Beam. When the group I found my voice in and safety crumbled beneath us because the home institution decided to fire our leaders, I returned to Beam. When I was 22 and I found myself helping to plan a memorial service for my friend who was 27, I returned to Beam. . The words of Joseph Beam put into language my deepest desires and inspired a vision within me that I'm still committed to. I was reborn through his essays. . Joseph Beam, a black gay men who stood in solidarity with Black Feminists, a black gay man that called out white racism, a black gay man that called out the heteropatriarchy in black communities offered me a model to define myself against, and an example. . Years later when I would discover his heartbreakingly beautiful letters he would continue to teach me. He would teach me about loneliness. He would teach me about despair. He would teach me about being vulnerable. He would teach me about the cost we pay. And yet in his honesty, even in the sadness, in his unbearable misery I was able to be reborn through his words yet again. I would learn that the things I felt, the hurt and the sadness was not unique, it was not specific to me, but its something that many of us share. . His example continues to shine a light on all I do. His brilliance still stands decades after his untimely death. The urgency of our present moment, calls for a voice like Beam, to provide insight, perspective, and healing energy.” - by Charles Stephens @charlesdotstephens . #whatisrememberedlives #theaidsm

NATIVE SON TOWN HALL: STAY WOKE
On Wednesday, February 15, 2017 Native Son hosted our first Town Hall entitled Stay Woke: Black Gay Men — Our Voice and Our Power In The Age Of Trump. I moderated the conversation featuring Darnell L. Moore of mic.com and Black Lives Matter, Kamal Kamal a Black Palestinian Gay activist, Jarrett Lucas of The Stonewall Community Foundation, Richard Scott Brookshire III of the Reparations Podcast, Robert Suttle of the Sero Project. We talked about intersectionality, community organizing and mobilization, activism, self love and actualization, HIV criminalization, immigration and health care, to list a few topics that were discussed. Sponsored by Tumblr, this convening of 100 Black Gay Men and allies, was the beginning of culturally and politically charged conversations, and the opportunity for us to fellowship and connect in a safe space. Check out the Facebook Live Stream on Native Son Now.
In the words of the late editor and activist Joseph Beam: “Together we are creating and naming a new community while extending a hand to the one from which we’ve come. We are bringing into the light the lives which we have led in the shadows.”
This is the beginning of the Native Son movement where Black Gay Men live in the light! Remember to Stay Woke! EW
