"A writer's heart, a poet's heart, an artist's heart, a musician's heart is always breaking. It is through that broken window that we see the world." -Alice Walker
Hiiii, on my last live we decided to have writers submit pieces to be read & shared on my next live. If you wanna send some of your own or your favorite pieces by other writers (music, poetry, short stories etc) you can drop it in my inbox or you can find my email in the link in my bio!
I wanna credit the artists too so pls include your handle/name.
I’ll most likely hop on Wednesday night, but I’ll come back & update with the specific time!
I’ll be reading some of my pieces too:)
I promise this is a safe space because we’re all artists and sensitive about our shit okay😭💛
After leaving my tour at the Guardian Building, I noticed there was a man giving out cups of coffee outside of 1001 Woodward; exactly what I needed for my afternoon pick-me-up!
I've been wanting to check out "Celebrating Black Arts" to enjoy the art and fashion, and it just so happened that the coffee was a part of the month-long celebration.
I made it in time to see a panel honoring the late Detroit poet, Naomi Long Madgett, and even met Martell of Sepia Coffee Project.
Dark Testament : Blackout Poems
Crystal Simone Smith
Macmillan Children's Publishing Group, Henry Holt and Co. (BYR) @macmillanusa
With Dark Testament : Blackout Poems, Crystal Simone Smith shares the mourning and pain of a community, deeply wounded by unlawful killings and racism : Oscar Grant, Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin, Sybrina Fulton, Michael Brown, Jordan Davis, Michelle Kenney, Daunte Wright, Aiyana Jones, Laquan McDonald, Rodney King, Sandra Bland, George Floyd, Walter Scott, or Breonna Taylor ; to only name a few of a very long, too long list. It is to them, and many others, that Smith’ s poems are dedicated.
In her poems, Crystal Simone Smith shares the voices of the Black Community and Black Lives Matters Movement. She shares the voices of the dead, but also the ones of the living. I have never read Black out poems before. They give a very unique perspective on the text, a poem within the poem with a totally new meaning. This collection of poems is beautiful, deep, and sad. It is a tribute to justice, truth, equality and love. It is definitively a book needed to be read and shared with the Community.
Please come out to this event, at San Antonio Culture Commons Gallery, 115 Plaza De Armas. I may not be there as I am waiting on a wheelchair to be approved, and surgery, possibly on both feet is highly likely. However, my art is up and that of all of the participating artists. Please come to hear the wonderful poetry and music. The exhibit will run through November. I hope to be at other events later in the year. I am not supposed to be walking at all right now. Crossing fingers my wheelchair gets approved and my apartment complex makes changes to make my unit accessible. In the meantime, I hope everyone who goes out has a great time. #sanantonio #blackart #blackartists #blackpoets #blackhistorymonth #disabledartists #poetryreading #music #spokenword #poetrynight #artexhibit #art #sanantonioartists #artistsoninstagram #poetry #freetothepublic #contemporaryart #contemporaryblackart https://www.instagram.com/p/Co0lqMaum0h/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
I haven’t read one of poems aloud in a while and was in the mood to do so tonight. Hopefully you feel this as you listen to where my voice takes you as you read along🖤
So I watch them walk by. Witness their legs become small and their backs sprouts wings that lead them to me and my sweet juices. I let them pest and feel less alone, hope they pick me and find value in my seeds. Their hands squeeze, turn me towards the sun, squint and choice makes their eyes dull. I settle, sink below the others, and wait for my flesh to turn soft, my juice to bitter. . . . . #benetthewriter #poetry #blackpoets #poetrycommunity #poem #prose https://www.instagram.com/p/ClmsVAcPUVI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
