Another new Troiani piece, featuring an American Loyalist and a Native ally with Joseph Brant, the Mohawk leader who lead Crown operations on the New York frontier during the American Revolution.
Brant fought in the 7 Years War, and in 1775 was received in London, where he met King George III and was inducted as a Freemason. He was also given a number of rifles as a gift, one of which he employed on his return voyage to America when his ship encountered a rebel privateer.
He commanded Loyalist and Native forces along the frontier throughout the Revolutionary War, and was blamed for a series of massacres, though at least one was exaggerated and another was due to the indiscretions of Loyalist commander Walter Butler.
After the war he and his Iroquois were granted land in Canada. They settled in Ontario and Brant continued to lead them until his death in 1807. He was one of the most well-known Native Americans of the eighteenth century among English-speaking peoples.

it's my boy's birthday so i get to rant about him. can we talk about how fucked it is that achilles gives him the name connor?
first of all, the dialogue when ratonhnhaké:ton actually introduces himself. achilles just says, "right... well, i'm not even going to bother trying to pronounce that." hi? hello hi??? you asked the thirteen year old child for his name, he gave it to you, and you just said you wouldn't even attempt it. gross and bad. and then, when he takes ratonhnhaké:ton to boston for the first time and the child is understandably awed and amazed by a new city, achilles tells him he should pretend to be european (fucked up for a variety of reasons, he absolutely cannot remotely pass as european in appearance or accent, and he's still dressed in his own cultural clothing) and call himself connor.
and that's just. so. achilles' deceased son was named connor. he takes in a kanien'kehá:ka child, flat-out tells him he won't try to pronounce his actual name, commands him to lie about his own ethnicity, and gives him the name of his dead son without asking if that's something ratonhnhaké:ton might be comfortable with.
in conclusion, achilles? watch OUT.

Deutschribing Germany
Literature
Middle Ages (5th-15th centuries)
Medieval German literature can be divided into two periods: Old High German literature (8th-11th centuries) and Middle High German literature (12th-14th centuries). The only surviving works from the first period are the Hildebrandslied (Lay of Hildebrand), which is the earliest poetic text in German and tells of the tragic encounter in battle between a father and a son, and Muspilli, which deals with the fate of the soul after death and at the Last Judgment.
Tumblr media
Middle High German literature saw a 60-year golden age known as mittelhochdeutsche Blütezeit, in which lyric poetry in the form of Minnesang—the German version of courtly love—blossomed thanks to poets such as Walther von der Vogelweide and Wolfram von Eschenbach. Another important genre during this time was epic poetry, of which the most famous example is the Nibelungenlied (The Song of the Nibelungs), which narrates the story of prince Siegfried and princess Kriemhild, among other characters.
Renaissance (15th-16th centuries)
Early New High German literature includes works such as Der Ring (The Ring) by Heinrich Wittenwiler, a 9,699-line satirical poem where each line is marked with red or green ink depending on the seriousness of the material, and Das Narrenschiff (Ship of Fools) by Sebastian Brant, a satirical allegory that contains the ship of fools trope.
Tumblr media
Other important authors are satirist and poet Thomas Murner, humanist Sebastian Franck, and poets Johannes von Tepl and Oswald von Wolkenstein.
Baroque (16th-17th centuries)
The Baroque period is characterized by works that reflected the experiences of the Thirty Years’ War and tragedies (Trauerspiele) on Classical themes, the latter were written by authors such as Andreas Gryphius and Daniel Caspar von Lohenstein. The most famous work is Der abenteuerliche Simplicissimus (Simplicius Simplicissimus) by Hans Jakob Christoffel von Grimmelshausen, a picaresque novel that narrates the adventures of the naïve Simplicissimus.
Tumblr media
Enlightenment (17th-18th centuries)
The most important writers of the Enlightenment are Christian Felix Weiße, Christoph Martin Wieland, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, and Johann Gottfried Herder.
Tumblr media
The Age of Reason saw the emergence of two literary movements: Empfindsamkeit (sentimental style) and Sturm und Drang (storm and stress). The first one intended to express true and natural feelings and featured sudden mood changes. The latter movement was characterized by individual subjectivity and extremes of emotion in response to the rationalism imposed by the Enlightenment.
Weimar Classicism (18th-19th centuries)
The main drivers behind Weimar Classicism, which synthesized ideas from Classicism, the Enlightenment, and Romanticism, were Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
During this period, Schiller published Die Bürgschaft (The Pledge), a ballad based on the legend of Damon and Pythias found in the Latin Fabulae, and Don Karlos (Don Carlos), a historical tragedy about Carlos, Prince of Asturias, while Goethe wrote Egmont, a play heavily influenced by Shakespearean tragedy, and Faust, a tragic play in which the main character sells his soul to the devil that is considered the greatest work of German literature.
Tumblr media
Romanticism (18th-19th centuries)
Important Romantic writers include E. T. A. Hoffmann, author of Der Sandmann (The Sandman), a short story based on the mythical character of said name that puts people to sleep by sprinkling sand on their eyes; Heinrich von Kleist, who wrote Das Kätchen von Heilbronn (The Little Catherine of Heilbronn), a drama set in Swabia in the Middle Ages; Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff, author of Das Marmorbild (The Marble Statue), a novella about a man who struggles to choose between piety and a world of art, and Novalis, author of Hymnen an die Nacht (Hymns to the Night), a collection of six poems.
Tumblr media
Folk tales collected by the Brothers Grimm became very popular during the Romantic period, as they represented a pure form of national literature and culture.
Biedermeier and Young Germany (19th century)
The Biedermeier period contrasts with the Romantic era and is best exemplified by poets Adelbert von Chamisso, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, and Wilhelm Müller.
Young Germany was a youth movement whose main proponents were Karl Gutzkow, Ludolf Wienbarg, and Theodor Mundt.
Realism and Naturalism (19th century)
The most representatives realist authors are Gustav Freytag, Theodor Fontane, and Theodor Storm, while Gerhart Hauptmann was the most important naturalist writer.
Weimar literature (20th century)
During the Weimar Republic, writers such as Erich Maria Remarque, Heinrich Mann, and Thomas Mann presented a bleak look at the world and the failure of politics and society.
Tumblr media
Expressionism (20th century)
As a modernist movement, Expressionism presented the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it for emotional effect. Famous authors include novelists Alfred Döblin and Franz Kafka, playwrights Ernst Toller and Georg Kaiser, and poets August Stramm and Else Lasker-Schüler.
Tumblr media
Neue Sachlichkeit (20th century)
Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) arose as a reaction against expressionism and was characterized by its political perspective on reality and portrayal of dystopias in an emotionless reporting style, showing cynicism about humanity. Authors associated with this movement include Erich Kästner, Hans Fallada, and Irmgard Keun.
Nazi Germany (1933-1945)
During the Nazi regime, some authors went into exile, while others submitted to censorship. The former, who either were of Jewish ancestry or opposed the regime for political reasons, include writers Alice Rühle-Gerstel and Anna Seghers, playwright Bertolt Brecht, and poet and novelist Hermann Hesse/Emil Sinclair.
Tumblr media
Those who stayed and engaged in inner emigration include writer Friedrich Reck-Malleczewen, poet and essayist Gottfried Benn, writer Hans Blüher, and poet and novelist Ricarda Huch.
Post-war literature (20th century)
The most famous authors in West Germany were Edgar Hilsenrath, Günter Grass, Heinrich Böll, and Group 47, a group of participants in writers’ meetings invited by Hans Werner Richter.
East German writers include Christa Wolf, Heiner Müller, Reiner Kunze, and Sarah Kirsch.
Tumblr media
Contemporary literature (21st century)
Fantasy and science fiction authors include Andreas Eschbach, Frank Schätzing, and Wolfgang Hohlbein. Some of the most important poets are Aldona Gustas, Hans Magnus Enzensberger, and Jürgen Becker. Thriller is best represented by Ingrid Noll. Fiction novelists include Herta Müller, Siegfried Lenz, and Wilhelm Genazino.

Turn Week 2023 Day 7: If I could change one thing...
For starters, I agree with what @honorhearted said about wishing the show was more character-driven than plot-driven. And the fact that it’s an ensemble cast is no excuse. If I could have this show with Downton Abbey-style narrative flair and pacing, I’d be thrilled.
I’m currently working with a friend on a secret hush! project that is basically a supernatural being AU, so I can’t pick that one as I’m already taking the reins myself.
I’m going to be a broken record and say I would have loved to have seen more Indigenous elements involved. Granted, yes, the show is about spies and the Culper Spy ring in general. But there are also story lines about Rogers and Akinbode, family relationships explored in Judge Woodhull and Samuel Townsend, and those enrich the main themes, they don’t take away from them. Even Rivington gives us a little speech.
Why couldn’t there have been more focus on the lives of Han Yerry and Awasos and their stories? It’s just such a big part of the historical context to wipe from the record. Indigenous populations, warriors, sachems, politicians and thinkers were involved in this conflict at every level, even as fighters in the Continental Army itself (Stockbridge militia, whoop whoop!). Not to mention the British and their extremely loyal and powerful ally in Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea) of the Mohawk. The presence of Indigenous warriors was used as a psychological tactic on both sides, and when they weren’t used in more formal military offences, they were used in sneakier missions, like scouting, raiding parties, and the like. How easy it would have been to include more Indigenous characters!
The interactions of Caleb, Ben, Rogers, the British generals and the Continental generals with their Indigenous allies would have told us a LOT, creating a richer portrayal, more intricate political tapestries, and frankly, should have been the baseline for inclusion.
*clears throat* *drinks water*
Also.
I would change the last line of the show. To literally anything else.

I’m still thinking of those beaded smiley-face hair pieces
I love Kanen’tó:kon and Connor’s relationship so much and their development as it leads towards their fallout
It’s a real god damn shame Charles Lee was a catalyst of it ending for good
I have more ac3 thoughts under the cut
Like,,, he wasn’t needed ????? Their motivations for splitting was pretty clear already
They didn’t need Lee’s intervention bc that but of writing is just kinda ,, unnecessary and does Kanen’tó:kon’s character a disservice
Like he has a hard time enough trusting Connor due to how closely he’s working with colonists already and seeing his own village’s involvement in the war as inevitable, so the game choosing the easy way out with having him trust Lee over his Own Best Friend (and likely cousin) is eh
I have ideas for rewriting but I don’t rly feel like sharing all of em in detail rn without supervision/proofreading/sensitivity reading
Just making Kanen’tó:kon join Connor on a few more missions, making the Tea Party event more accurate to history which makes Kanen’tó:kon and Connor hate the colonists more (though Connor continues working with them as a means to an end to fight off the Templars), the inclusion of Joseph Brant (NOT as a Templar or an antagonist or anything like that, he’s just here to rally and give their village the option to join the British), have more conversations with these two,,,
If I could help it, I’d remove Kanen’tó:kon’s death entirely? Him and Connor could still get in a physical fight, but his death really sucks (it’s such an emotional scene so I’m just bummed out this character is being sent off especially with the Lee thing).
He’s set up as a good leader, so if he recovers after the fight maybe it’d be his idea and initiative to move the village without Ratonhnhaké:ton? (After counsel permission and Oiá:ner first of course) It’d still be a bitter ending, but it cements how these two have truly parted after everything and have changed so much.
Both these characters have incredibly strong conflict in the same problem: Keeping their village safe. The way they differed was great enough drama already.
I’m just saying, Lee didn’t have to be here. Or if he did, Kanen’tó:kon would need to have seen and been with Connor through a lot more in order to break off their friendship completely

BRANDT Not sure where this came from, and it's generic enough a word/name that it could be almost anything. Maybe a reference to Joseph "Monster" Brant, aka Thayendanegea, a famous native american soldier and politician who notably sided with the British against colonists during the American Revolution??? But that'd be pretty obtuse even by WA standards.
SADAS & JR. we saw in the boss tournament. Another name of unclear origin. Google returns are Wild Arms, so it may very well be completely original.
ZABAT appears to be a mislocalization of TZEVAOT or SABAOTH, considered one of the names of the abrahamic god, an epithet from the hebrew word[צְבָאֽוֹת] meaning "armies." For lack of a better image here's the SMT art,
DANTALION/DANTALIAN is another Ars Goetia demon. I don't actually know why he's got the big star design. The original WA1 one i kinda get since he's just generally a sort of wonder worker, i guess he just kinda got tied to DECARABIA and carried forward from there.
speaking of which.... DECARABIA is the Ars Goetia demon specifically associated with appearing as a pentagram that changes into the form of a man. It's the real basis of this whole family tree.
BUER is yet another demon ins the Ars Goetia, originally described as a centaur famous illustration by Louis Le Breton solidified the popular image of BUER as a wheel of goat legs emanating from the head of a lion. From that image we get the 5 legs association with the star shape shared by the monsters here.

Just finished Bees and yet again the Bree + Roger subplots are the least interesting to me but I’m glad we got more of William and of Ian and Rachel! It kinda dragged on a bit with the day-to-day monotony of the Ridge (which I usually like but this was a lot) but overall I enjoyed the book!
Major Spoilers under Read More
John Cinnamon is my new favorite character! He is such a sweet young man and I think I’m going to go back and read the Lord John series now too! Because it felt like I was missing something with the whole Percy subplot in MOBY + this book having not read it.
Like lowkey why is everyone other than Jaime and Claire’s immediate offspring (sans Willie) more interesting? Idk how Diana managed to create such an unlikeable little family unit with Brianna, Roger, and their kids (tho I do like Jeremiah, not so much Amanda) but such a rich supporting cast!
Also why give Brianna a heart condition if it’s just magically going to be fixed by her being pregnant?!
I will say though it’s interesting that Davy isn’t a time traveller like his siblings. Makes you wonder if Fergus (who I am also choosing to believe is La Comte’s son) is a traveller or not and what this means for Claire and her family. Also makes one wonder if Percy’s family that he married into or even Fergus himself might be one of her ancestors 👀
The Richardson subplot is…😬 Why would you make an abolitionist the main villian! Not to mention he has African American ancestry! Diana WTF? Your racism is showing in this book 🤦‍♀️ Not to mention the plot with Ulysses/Joseph Stevens… like Diana why???
I am also choosing to believe that Totis is Ian’s son! He is such a sweet addition to the household, even if the reasons were a bit strenuous in the book. Though I am also intrigued by the Jenny/Joseph Brant’s Uncle romance. Though I don’t know why Claire didn’t tell Jenny that the war would be over in a matter of months? 🤔
Makes me wonder why she’s decided to kill off Percy and what this means for the Percy & Fergus storyline.
And why in hell Hal want to see Ben! Like I was under the impression that Amaranthus was in cahoots with Ben and then she went to see him and saw him with a other woman which came out of nowhere. Honestly it would have been more interesting if she’d known and went be with him and left Trevor with the Willie and Lord John. Bye maybe the whole widow thing is a ruse and she lied about the other woman and maybe she is in on it?
Though it makes me wonder if Hal made the poison to poison Ben…
Like I wonder if William will take Amatanthus up on her offer and pass off his title and estates to their kid. Like obviously that’s what Ben did with her and why I thought that Amarantus was more involved with the plan than we saw (esp with her reaction when she went to see him) though I’m dubious about whether her account of the events is true or not.
I mean the way she brazenly suggested the plan that Ben had gone through with seemed suspicious to me!
I think Richardson is involved with Rob Cameron in some way and that the gold is going to come into play. Again, weird choice of villain with Richardson being an abolitionist but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
And also WTF happen to Ulysses? Is he dead? I know Duncan was one of his men but like why didn’t you just tell him she was in Nova Scotia? Just be vague and then he might not have tried to ya know oust Jaime and that whole skirmish!
Like I want to see less filler (or just more with beloved characters like Lizzie!) and more streamlining from the editor on the major plot points!
Also WTF happened to Buck!
