Cobra Kai 2.0

Something that struck me about the new Cobra Kai versus the Cobra Kai in the films -

Nearly every Cobra Kai member they focus on in the series is underprivileged. Hawk is disabled. Miguel is a poor boy whose family are immigrants. Tory is a fatherless poor caretaker of a sick mother and younger brother. Kenny is a poor black kid picked on by a bunch of rich white kids. Yes, there's Parker, but did he ever get his own episode? Aisha is a bullied black kid, though she's rich (which got her booted off the show).

The Miyagi Do's are the rich ones, the stable ones (no one we know of among them, other than Robby, has much hardship to overcome). Beautiful dojo and everything.

But that wasn't what the films were selling! The Cobra Kais were a group of mostly white preppy rich kids ganging up on one new poor kid, who, to some people in that Encino club, might still have counted as not-quite-white (if Aly was born around 1966, her parents will have been born around 1930-1940, and to those people, Daniel LaRusso would have been called a swarthy wop, guinea or dago by some people they grew up with, if they're too polite to use such language by 1983). Daniel definitely takes pains not to seem other to his environment even in 2018.

Sorry, but if your message is: "Cobra Kais are people too", why can't you simply try to win sympathy for preppy white kids? Why make Johnny into a blue collar worker? Nothing in his background suggests that. Why not make him a divorced, washed up, bankrupted investment banker? Why have Eli not simply be the vaguely Jewish kid who has trouble making friends? Really, if your whole raison d'être is "shitty rich kids are people too", why are you making it so that your protagonists are always fighting the rich kids? Who... aren't even shitty? Who did Samantha LaRusso ever hurt? And maybe there's Anthony, but he's barely in the show for three seasons.

Teaching poor kids to fight dirty because life can do you dirty is borderline justified. But The Karate Kid was about rich kids being taught to fight dirty and then taking all their advantages out on poor kids, because might makes right. Johnny, with his bike, and his preppy clothes, laughing at Daniel who has to sneak in through the kitchen to see his uptown girl. Chozen, the strong henchman to his insanely rich uncle, ganging up on the poor foreign boy. Terry Silver, making business deals with career fighter Mike Barnes. Humanise that all you like - but we also see what that looks like in the films, and that's Aly. The rich girl who really likes this new sweet kid, and doesn't care his mother is probably too outspoken for her parents' liking, and doesn't care her girlfriends don't much care for him. Aly, who is nothing but polite to Mr. Miyagi (compare that to Terry Silver's openly racist taunts), and only breaks up with Daniel when he jumps to conclusions (once about the class difference, another time when he was openly jealous about her talking to other guys). Show why, as taught by Johny, Cobra Kai 2.0 is good for those kids, or indeed show Johnny figuring out why it isn't and trying to make a change.

Because a poor kid learning "No Mercy" because they're trying to survive in a world that is trying to crush them is a very different setup than teaching a rich kid with all advantages in the world how to go around and pick on people, which is what Kreese was doing. The closest we get to that in the show is Hawk. It indeed isn't pretty and his redemption is entirely rushed, but even Eli, vaguely Jewish kid with a scarred face and trouble understanding social cues, had it much harder than, say, Tommy, who simply liked to win fights with his friends, if that meant nearly beating a young Newark boy to death after a school dance.

It all started to feel normal now, you and Daniel having to go a certain route home in order to avoid johhny lawrence and his friends. They just wouldn't leave you and Daniel alone, its one of the reasons you joined with Daniel in the dojo he goes too. He was much farther ahead than you, but you enjoyed it all the same. Mr miyagi was a nice man, and had a funny quirky side to him too, you could see the way him and Daniel were together, it was more than a teacher/student bond, it was a genuine friendship. With the little amount of lessons you had already done, you felt a little safer being out on your own. Daniel wasnt always with you, but when he was, it made everything better.

You had a crush on Daniel for as long as you could remember, he was cute, and kind and always made you laugh. He was always a supportive friend to you, it was no wonder you had a crush in him. One day after you finished class, Daniel had to stay behind to discuss some work with one of his teachers, he said he would meet up with you at the dojo. You were walking through the local park, you could see the dojo in the distance across the street. But before you could walk any further, Johnny Lawrence saunters up to you. "Hey Y/N, what are you up to?" "Please leave me alone Johhny, I'm not in the mood-" "Ah ah ah" you try to walk past him but he gets in your way. But for now, we're going to have some fun" One of the boys grabs your shoulder from behind you, but you hold onto his hand and pull him, literally flipping him over your back and shoulder so he falls onto the ground infront of you, with a loud thud. Johhny and the other boy go for you, but your able at first to dodge them both. But it wasnt as easy as you had hoped, one grabbed your arms and pinned them behind you, while Johnny started punching you in the stomach, it was so painfull it brought tears to your eyes.

"Ha ha! Look at the little girl cry! You wont be crying after this one!" You see Johnny raise his leg, he looks like hes about to high kick you in the face, but right at the last second, someone behind Johnny sweeps his leg and he falls to the floor. "Get your hands off her!" Shouted Daniel, looking extremely angry. The boy holding your arms throws you to the ground, and Daniel is right there to help you up. "Hey, are you alright?" He asked helping you to your feet and wiping away your tears. "Its hurts Daniel, they wouldn't- they wouldnt stop!" "Hey hey its alright" he says as he gently takes you into his arms for a hug "I wont let him do this to you again" But as Johnny stands back up, he just laughs at you and Daniel along with his two friends. "Yeh right larusso! You should have left her to us. The bitch deserved what she got"

Daniel moves you so your behind him, putting himself infront of you in a protective way. "You just made a big mistake Johnny, you owe Y/N an apology!" "And apology?" Him and his friends laugh again. "We'll finish off your little friend...just as soon as I'm done with you!" Johnny attempts to go for Daniel, but before he even realised it, Daniel had maneuvered himself into the crane position, and high kicked Johnny square in the face. His two friends are shocked as Johnny falls to the ground like a sack of bricks, his nose is bleeding and he is trying no to cry. "You'll pay for that larusso!" Johnny and his two friends run away as quickly as they could, presumably so they didnt have anyone else see that they just got their asses kicked. "Are you alright? Where did they hurt you?" "He punched me, over and over again, right hear" you lift up your shirt slightly to show your stomach, it was already starting to bruise.

"Come on, mr miyagi might have some ice we can put on it" he takes you by the arm and guides you to the dojo across the street. Once your there you and Daniel tell Mr miyagi everything, and he gives you an ice pack for your bruises. "Daniel, I must call Y/N's parents , she cannot train in her condition" "I understand mr miyagi, I'll stay with her" Mr miyagi leaves you both, Daniel sits next to you as you hold the ice pack against your stomach. "Thank you Daniel, if it wasnt for you I dont know what could have happend" "Its alright Y/N, I know you would have done the same thing for me" He wraps his arm over your shoulders in a comforting way, ending up with you both smiling and looking into eachothers eyes.

He really saved you today, protected you, it just strengthened the crush you had in him. And yet, it appeared he may feel the same, as the distance slowly grew shorter, as Daniel leaned in and pressed his lips against yours in a very sweet and gentle way. It only lasted about 30 seconds but it felt like forever, a forever you didnt want to end. When you both eventually pulled away, you couldn't help but blush and giggle, Daniel doing the same. "That was...nice, Daniel" "Yeh, I really liked it too" Then mr miyagi walked in "Y/N, I called your mother, she will be hear soon. She said she will pick you up from hear, you cant train after what happened today" "Thank you mr miyagi" "Daniel? Are you staying today? Or are you keeping Y/N company?" Daniel gave you a smile and you squeeze his hand. "If it's alright mr miyagi, I'll stay with Y/N, it's been a hard day for her" "I understand, I'll leave you two in peace" He raised his eye brows at us, showing that he understood what was going on, it just made you and Daniel giggle.

What are modern!aemond’s comfort films? Also what music does he listen to??

AHH THIS is my favorite to talk about, ever!! (sorry it took me long, I'm dealing with LIFE lmao). But this is my favorite thing to figure out about a character. Ok ok ok ok so!! In previous headcanons I’ve talked a little bit about directors in general, but I’d love to get into actual comfort movies!

MOVIES

From Al Pacino, his comfort movies are Frankie and Johny and Scent of a Woman. Scent of a Woman hits close to home because Al plays a blind colonel.

Other Pacino faves: Dog Day Afternoon, Serpico, …And Justice For All, Scarecrow, Insomnia and Heat.

Loves fantasy of course, so Lord of the Rings trilogy is in there - the extended versions obviously.

This man is such a snob and a nerd, I feel like he'd love european comedies. French ones with Gerard Depardieu, like Ruby & Quentin, the Asterix movies, and The Closet.

102 Dalmatians (it has Gerard Depardieu AND it's about dogs. And we've established him as a dog dad). He probably also likes the first one with Jeff Daniels, and of course, the animated one!

In fact, let's make the animated 101 Dalmatians his #1 comfort movie of all time. Maybe this is the one he saw as a child that he truly loved and would watch all the time, and even the one that made him love dogs!

Also italian comedies with Roberto Benigni, like The Tiger And The Snow.

AND OF COURSE spanish ones from Pedro Almodovar, like Kika, Women on the Edge of a Nervous Breakdown and Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!

Idk why this is coming to my head but I think he'd love 10 Things I Hate About You and the Bridget Jones movies, for ultimate comfort.

MUSIC

For music I've mentioned that I see him as this mix of, liking heavy metal music and oldies, but also classical music and film scores. I see him liking old school!Metallica, Mercyful Fate, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, but then also modern stuff like Muse, Måneskin, Artict Monkeys, Hozier. As for composers, he strikes me as a fan of Ennio Morricone.

so i watched housekeeper (1992) and was thinking about a lawrusso au; and like this is what i thought

modern + fake dating!au. they're in college; i thought johnny could be in architecture class and daniel in business;

daniel and johnny know each other and are always fighting about something but no karate involved (bc i have no idea how to write fight scenes sorry;

johnny was dating ali, they were highschool sweethearts and were the most annoying couple y'know;

but she broke up with him because, well, he’s johnny and there’s going to be a reason i just don’t know what it could be;

a few months later she’s dating again and johnny after crying like a baby (but no one can know that) decided to be an idiot and tell her he also had a date;

and he also says she’ll meet him in a party that some kid is throwing, because they're obviously going;

so. the next week he’s trying to find a date in every bar he knows;

and the rest of the cobras are there too, they’re supposed to help but they’re just laughing at johnny and not doing their job;

bobby + tommy told him to just tell her the truth;

jimmy + dutch are the ones that are encouraging him;

then he runs into daniel in one of these bars;

they are talking (fighting?) and something just clicks in joihnny's mind and he makes the best or worst decision in his life;

"larusso, do you wanna be my fake boyriend this weekend?"

"what?"

"be my fake boyfriend so my ex will want me back! i wanna make her jealous!"

"dude... what the fuck?"

after a lot of talking he kinda agrees to do it and there's more plot and all but i'm lazy sorry;

they go to this party and ali see them and thinks that's all a lie and starts asking the cobras if they are really a couple;

dutch: "of course they are! all that fight was just sexual tension!"

tommy: "you should see them more, they stay in their own little world and forget there's people around"

bobby: "well, why wouldn't it be? it was always in front of us"

she even asks jimmy girlfriend, but even the girl says is real. so she just accepts it... does she?;

they start hanging out more and at some point they decide they're actually good friends;

sometimes daniel sleeps at johnny's just because ali lives in the same building johnny lives and she would see him;

because everything they're doing is to make her jealous;

which, by the way, is working;

then she starts invinting them to every party she knows because it would be nice to have more couples in their circle of friends;

in one of these meeting someone says they should talk about what they like the most about their partners;

and since daniel is the one that actually is always talking about what he likes about johnny, he starts but someone decides that johnny should say something for once;

and that's when johnny starts to panic because he's not a romantic guy and has no idea what to talk about;

so he talks about stuff they did like listen to speedwagon in daniels car while eating pizza after class;

he talks about when daniel slept in his house and decided to clean every thing and buy food. so when he and dutch woke up the whole apartment was actually clean and they had real food;

so they decided daniel should live with them forever;

he talks abou daniels food and how good it is. and everyone buys it because they can see they're in love;

and that's when it starts getting weird;

and just like in housekeeper everything starts to turn into a ball of lies and no one knows what to do anymore;

the boys are getting crazy because they say stuff that don't match what the other is saying;

bc johny actually likes daniel and doesn't know how to deal with that;

and daniel is just there. being himself. laughing and cleaning and cooking and being fucking pretty;

bobby is the first one to notice, and johnny can finally talk about it;

about how scared he is that daniel will be disgusted or something worse;

and then leave and tell ali about the fake dating;

and ruin his life!;

then the rest of the cobras know and decides that they're helping johnny get the d;

I imagined 14-year-old Danielle not having a haunt/lair because her "wandering" obsession would contradict having one.

This would make her feel even more homeless and like a mistake, but Danny's ghostly allies and the Justice League would do whatever they can to help her. 🙂

Basically, they would have a custody schedule and each person would have her for two weeks at a time.

Jazz would not want Danielle to live with Kitty and Johny with them being so focused on each other, and the fact they likely died in a driving accident together.

She and Danny already experienced a lot of their parents' self-centered nature and crazy driving. This is another reason why she really doesn't like or trust Johny and Kitty.

Robby is stuck living with his dad for the summer, which he hates. Not only does he have to stick around his old man he has to be around Miguel diaz. He doesn't have that bad of a problem with him in all honesty, but when Miguel mentions Tory he snaps. The two get into a fight which leads to a make out session. Which soon happens more and more but when all of the gang is over he realizes that Miguel has been doing the same with hawk.
