Big Bend Chapter 16 - Monsters

Cw warnings: mentions of violence, giants hurting/eating people, cursing, angst

“Last night was fun. We should really hang outside of work more often,” Angie said, standing in the shade offered by Easton’s shadow, just outside the glass doors of the visitor center. The giant looked down at her.

“Yeah. Thanks for letting me tag along,” Easton replied.

“Of course!! It was Dave’s idea really, though,” Angie replied.

“I appreciated it,” Easton said. It was the height of the afternoon, and even in the shade, Angie could feel herself sweating. She wondered if the heat bothered Easton as much, or more - that was one of many things she wondered about the giant. She almost asked, then second guessed herself as she worried it might be rude.

“Can I take a picture with you?” The taller of Two teenage girls asked as they ran up to Easton. He looked away from Angie to talk to them. Angie spotted John standing in the shade of the building nearby, and walked over to him.

“How are you doing today?” She asked.

“Other than the heat, pretty well. That was nice of you two to invite Easton yesterday. He seemed excited.”

Angie smiled. “Well, like I told him, it was Dave’s idea.”

“You know, I’m glad to hear that. I was a bit worried there was some tension between them.”

“I think Dave is just still getting used to things,” Angie said.

“Well, I’m glad he seems to be settling down, then,” John replied.

“Lot of gall they have, letting you play with people like fucking toys.” An angry, unfamiliar voice drew both John and Angie’s attention over to Easton. And the tall, spindly, elderly man marching up to him. The giant, currently holding the two girls who’d been asking for a photo, looked taken aback at the man’s sudden outburst.

“I’m sorry, sir, I assure you I don’t think-“ Easton started, only for the man to cut him off.

“Oh, cut the shit. I know all about what you are. How your kind thinks they’re better than everyone else, that humans are just playthings or a snack. I read all about it on Facebook.”

John shot Angie a look. “I’ll be right back,” he said. Angie gave a short nod, glancing up at Easton.

“Is it okay if I set you down on the observation platform?” Easton asked the girls. They nodded, assumingly assenting.

“Hey dude, fuck you! We asked him to pick us up for a picture! ” The shorter girl shouted as she climbed off Easton’s hand.

“You’re blind to the truth!” The old man shouted back. “And you should be staying as far away from that monster as you can!”

“Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to either stop yelling or leave the park,” John said calmly, but firmly.

“Oh, so now I’m the bad guy? For telling the truth?” The man turned, now addressing anyone in the immediate vicinity. “He came here to get information on Earth! So they can invade! They’ll keep us as livestock!”

Aside from all the other issues with the man’s words, Angie couldn’t help but wonder what the point of Aphiria going to great lengths to concoct an elaborate plan of sending a spy when their military already likely greatly outmatched humanity’s. Or why they wouldn’t just, kidnap a few humans if they really wanted information. Or go with any number of other strategies that seemed a thousand times more effective than sending a botanist to tell humans information about Aphiria (and flowers).

“Sir,” John repeated.

The man ignored him. “I’ll bet you all anything people have gone missing in this park, and that the cause wasn’t just some sprained ankle.” He looked back at Easton. “What? You don’t have anything to say for yourself? You’re really going to commit to the whole friendly park ranger act? C’mon, show these people who you really are.”

“Sir, if you don’t leave, I will have to escort you from the premises. You’re harassing a federal employee.”

“Oh, that’s rich,” the man scoffed. “He’s not a federal employee, he’s a bloodthirsty monster!”

Angie was pretty sure she saw Easton actually flinch at that, hurt flickering in his eyes even though he stayed silent and still.

“He is! They’re all vicious predators, Aphirials are! And you lot are walking your children right up to him like he wouldn’t swallow them alive!”

John placed his hand on the man’s shoulder. The man tried to wriggle free from his grip, but John was already pulling him towards the two law enforcement rangers that Angie hadn’t noticed walk up. The man continued his rant even as they announced he would be escorted from the park, screaming obscenities at Easton and anyone else within earshot.

“He’ll kill you! You and your parents!” He shouted at a young boy as he was roughly pulled past by the two officers.

“Sorry about that, y’all,” John said, addressing the group of people that had gathered to watch the outburst. “Ranger Easton and Ranger Angie were actually just about to go on break, but Ranger Annie would be happy to answer any questions you have about the park!”

John walked over to Angie, giving her a tight smile.

“I really don’t need a break, if you want me to stay-“

John shook his head. “It’ll look more natural if you both leave. And I think Easton does need a break.”

“Right,” Angie said. She looked over towards Easton, who was carefully standing up, wondering how he had to be feeling with a sinking feeling. “Can I ask him if he’d like company?”

John hesitated for a moment, then nodded. “He’d probably appreciate that. I’m going to have to go check in with the situation with that man, but I’ll be quick.”

“Hey, Easton, do you mind if I join you?” Angie shouted, getting the giant’s attention easily as usual. He looked down at her.

“Yeah, feel free. I was just going to go back to my place,” Easton said.

“Do you mind giving me a ride?” Angie asked. Surprise flashed through Easton’s eyes before he nodded.

“Sure,” he said. He carefully kneeled down to let Angie climb into his hand. Once they were out of earshot from the crowd, and nearly at Easton’s front door, Angie broke the silence.

“Are you okay?” she asked. Easton nodded quickly.

“Yeah, I’m fine,” he said. He opened the door to his place with his free hand. “Where do you want me to set you down?” He asked.

“The table by the couch is fine,” Angie said. He did so, carefully lowering her to the table so she vould climb off before sitting down on the couch himself.

“Did John ask you to come with me?” Easton asked after a moment. “You really don’t have to stay if he did-“ Angie shook her head.

“It was my idea. I thought you might want to talk. That guy was…pretty crazy. I know if he was yelling at me I’d be kind of shaken,” Angie said.

“Oh. I’m fine, really. I appreciate it, though,” Easton said. They were both silent for a long moment.

“Do you think I’m a monster?” Easton asked quietly, breaking the silence. He stared at the ground.

“Easton…no, I don’t,” Angie said.

“ I-I wouldn’t hurt anyone. I wouldn’t hurt children,” Easton said, his voice breaking.

“I know you wouldn’t,” Angie said.

“I’m sorry,” Easton said, straightening up and failing to hide the tears in his eyes. “I’m really fine. Do you-“

“It’s okay to not be fine,” Angie cut him off. He looked at her despairingly.

“It really isn’t,” Easton said. “I don’t want to scare anyone.”

Angie sighed, thinking back to Penelope’s words about how Easton had to be friendly again. And not just friendly, but calm, and entirely composed basically 24/7. She might not have been in the same situation, but she could relate to that experience at least.

“Well, you don’t scare me,” Angie said finally. “And I think talking about it might help.”

She wasn’t sure if Easton was going to answer her for a moment.

“I knew it would be difficult, that humans weren’t really going to be used to me,” Easton said after a long moment. “And that there’d be plenty who didn’t like me or were scared of me and I get that, like I swear I’m not trying to say everyone should like and trust me or something. I just…I guess it just hurts sometimes? Especially when I know they’re right. Like, I kind of am a monster. I have fangs. And I’d have claws, if I didn’t file them down. The reason I can even hear humans alright is because I’m supposed to be able to hear potential prey. I mean, There’s even an entire genre of movies about giant monsters! But the way that boy looked at me, when that guy told him I was going to kill him and his parents and-I just-“ Easton trailed off, a tear running down his face. “I don’t want to be a monster.”

“You’re not a monster, Easton,” Angie said softly. “Not anymore than me or Dave or Penelope or anyone else.”

Easton wiped his eyes, forcing a half hearted smile. “Thanks,” he said, doubt still lingering in his eyes.

UM.. OF COURSE.. been waiting for the day an anon asked me this. Just a warning I am mentally insane sorry if these hcs are too crazy for you.

Height headcanon from shortest to tallest: Jane, Rose, Dave, John/June, Dirk, Roxy, Jake, Jade.

Rose used to be taller than Dave, but then Dave had a growth spurt lol.

Jake English:

Jake has NPD ( made a whole post about this a long time ago, which I want to add onto one day because I have more to cover ) + Autism. He's also Nonbinary but hasn't realized it yet / Trying to repress it.

Jake is aromantic, I'm not sure if I see him as bi or gay yet.

Dave Strider:

Dave has DID because of his upbringing ( Again, made like 4 posts and 3 artworks about this ) + ADHD. Candy route won me over so I HC Dave as gay, though I also like aromantic hcs as well. He's cisgender to me sorry, his gay realization was just so cis to me. Also he has really crooked teeth and I wouldnt be surprised if he lost an adult tooth or at least chipped some because I also HC that he prolly would lose baby teeth during strifes.

Davesprite:

OKAY I'M ONLY SAYING THIS BECAUSE IM SO PASSIONATE ABOUT IT . SPRITES DONT HAVE GENITALS. THEY DONT ! THEY DONT NEED THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ahem. He also has birdlike eyes. It's like more of a reason to not take off the shades because theyre kind of creepy. also I think if he hugged anyone hed wrap his wings aroudn them too ( his wings r huge )

Dirk Strider:

ADHD... I also been thinking BPD because my partner dies on that hill but I'm not sure yet. Also OCD. I sometimes hc as intersex AND trans, but a lot of times I just settle on Perisex + trans. He's just SUCH a trans guy I will shake him around like a drink.

I would also say HCs for bro strider but like all of them are heavy topics, sorry!

Also gender/sexuality/appearance hcs change a lot for me because I love a lot of diff headcanons.

💫 HOMESTUCK BETA KIDS HEADCANONS 💫

Hello hello!! My name is Eri and I'm fairly new to Tumblr but I'd love to meet other fellow Homestuck enjoyers out there!

Therefore, here I present my beta kids headcanons! Hope you enjoy <3

John Egbert

— John has a major gap in between his front teeth, and generally quite crooked teeth. Because of that he needs to wear a removable teeth retainer for the night hehe

I think it would be green!

— John is also double jointed. He uses silly little tricks to make his pranks look cooler! He also likes to freak people out with it

— Despite being quite critical about Con Air (the moment in the comic where he was rewatching it with Jade and stuff) he still holds a super soft spot for it!! Even now that he sees how actually awful it is movie-wise, it's still one of his all time favourites

— John is actually taller than Dave! Not by a lot, but he instinctively slouches when talking to him. He does that a lot with people that are shorter than him, causing him quite a bit od back pain

— His eyesight is really bad, also he has quite severe astigmatism

— He has a massive overbite

— His hair is naturally super soft and fluffy, although they have a tendency to get frizzy sometimes

— Before reaching god tier his hair was completely straight, although after that it got some waves! Likely due to his magic wind

— He's chubby!!!!

Dave Strider

— Being quite short Dave tried his best to keep an up-right posture to appear taller

— His natural hair color is actually brown, although following Bro's footsteps he bleached them blonde! Doing ir by himself he damaged them quite a lot and they're in a very bad condition

— He mostly wears oversized clothing, both because he thinks they're super cool and because he's actually quite self-conscious about his body :(

— He prefers dark over milk chocolate

— Holds a ton of suppressed emotions inside of him, and has trouble expressing them outwardly

Rose Lalonde

— When she does make up, she likes to match her eyeshadow to the color of her headband!

— Sometimes when she's alone she likes to hum and even sing sometimes, and her voice is very soft and soothing

— When she paints her nails, she loves to do an accent nail! Usually on her ring finger

— Her hair has a slight natural curl to it like Roxy's but she straightens them

— She has a low social battery and likes being alone, with the only exception being Kanaya <3 (strong rosemary shipping). She feels like she understands her needs and can comfortably chill together without the awkward silence

Jade Harley

— Woof woof! :3c

— She is the tallest and skinniest one in the beta kids group!

— Compared to John, she almost has 20/20 vision

— She loves to put little star stickers that glow in the dsek everywhere!

— Her hair is soft, thick and curly, and she loves to keep it long! She likes how it feels when they flow with the wind as she's running

— She's pretty tan because of where she lives

— Back at hee home she grew hee own fruit! Her favourites were strawberries and raspberries

— She can wiggle her ears!

— Once she tied a colorful reminder around her finger so tight it started going numb

Liv: Meanwhile Dave, Jade, and Rose are all turning 5 John playing catch up as the youngest.

Given everyone's now grown taller since the story started, about how tall are Sam, Jess, and Cody?

This is a fun ask!

Putting things under a cut just because spoilers (kind of)

(The spoiler in question being that despite the bleak end of Season 4, things do turn out OK)

So as of where we're at in the story (going into senior year of high school):

Jess is 5' 2.5" (but rounds it up to 5'3" if you ask him)

Cody and Sam are both around 5'9" (Cody maybe closer to 5' 9.5" in human form)

With his tail, Cody is well over 6' long, probably closer to 7' from the top of his head to the tips of his fluke

Tbh a lot of this was based on the fact that Whit (David Coulier) is 5'11" and then basing everyone off of that. Cody's much shorter than him in the movie

Like look at him, he's so little, easily only about 5'5" or so, and Sam's around the same height, whereas Jess is exceptionally short by comparison in the movie. I imagined their height proportions would generally stay similar as they grew up.

Not that you asked, but Sean's a little taller, he's around 6'1" by now. He and Cody are around the same height in the movie. Sean and Sam will be 18 in October and September of senior year respectively, so have pretty much hit their adult heights

(not that anyone asked, again, but Sam's birthday is September 17, Sean's is October 12, both 1985 - Sam is getting a birthday episode this season!)

Jess and Cody are only 16 where we're at, but both are pretty close to adult-height as well (they've had birthday episodes - in Cody's case, the whole movie was essentially a birthday episode lol - but for a reminder, Jess is March 2, Cody is May 15, both 1986)

The two slightly-weird height cases (I am turning this into an essay about character heights lol) are actually John Wheatley and Mats Neslund. Brent Briscoe was only 5'9" but I've chosen to write John more like 6'2" or 6'3" if we're using Whit/Dave Coulier as our cast yardstick. Neslund, of course, isn't *actually* Stellan Skarsgard since that was just an actor reference, but if he was, Skarsgard is quite tall at 6'3." Neslund I imagined being somewhat shorter than John, probably more like 6' even.

A word on actor reference photos, I like them to help give characters a general face/appearance to imagine, but they're often still just more of an overview in most cases. The main exceptions to that - as in, I do think that the actor selected would be ideal to play the character as written - would be Stellan Skarsgard for Neslund, Gillian Anderson for Lindsey, Brenda Song for Meredith, and Corbin Bleu for Alex/Sandstorm

I'll also share this screenshot because it really shows how tiny movie-Jess was and also because it's one of my absolute favorite shots in the film :D

not really!! I don't actually know what people think of the ship if I'm being honest! but i feel like people draw Dave taller than John a lot but John seems like the type to be really tall and lanky!

Well those are some lines right there and that was Clancy Brown but really my son is off the reservation and I got bad news and Clancy Brown wants to hear it I'll say it like this the whole down there might go to Antarctica but it also went near the ship which he may have taken the whole thing and it went to your mind there's a whole up there and no it's not John Gallagher and it's near salt lake City and it's not really that huge we thought it was a geyser it's about 5 miles across and mine is not really huge but he dismantled it I have a personal grudge against him he's messing with my other son really badly he hadn't punched Jeff malhewish he showed up at Schwarzenegger and his helicopter and he's not Schwarzenegger and I'm so tired of that a****** he was such a dick now he has other people doing it and his Androids and man he's disgusting it looks like he's screwing around with the Max and we're not sure and he's he's in the tomb and even if it's his people doing it too he's doing all the stuff and introducing him to it all and he's it's worse so they're fighting and the guy won't shut up I feel really bad and I feel it's possibly my fault and he says no people are encouraging to make the tech they're encouraging Dave to go too far but it looks like he went extremely far and I do understand that and he can become massive and they did not believe it now there's a song and it's the birds and it's 8 Miles high and what you're saying is he was 800 miles high or a thousand and it may have made a depression 8 mi down and that's what I was thinking and BJ said it too did these huge lakes or something in South America and we have to go look at that and in the survey plane crashed and it became a movie probably just keeps happening but they would be probably about 20 or 30 miles long so I'm wondering what those might be

It's about force and distribution of the load he makes his shoes no his feet are huge they're like 40 miles wide and about 80 miles long and the depressions are only a few miles and he fills them in as he goes it's something happened and he had to leave we think it was his wife. He threatened his father with depression so it may have been him and what's 8 Miles high might be a pile of the dirt then he left there that would make it about 40,000 ft high and although Everest is taller it's on a plateau it's about 20,000 ft and the mountain itself is 30,000 ft technically that pile of dirt is higher than Everest and it came up today because people knew about it no it's because of what we're talking about and 8 miles is nothing to sneeze at and he tried to spread the dirt out and couldn't do it and yeah it was his wife with a blaster

Winter Apocalypse chapter 38

Barista Batista

The cafeteria in question, Jon discovered with great pleasure, was perhaps the most inviting and comfortable place Jon had seen not only in Winter Hogwarts, but in his entire life. Even Winterfell, of which Jon had always had a very high reputation, could dream of such a café. Outside the small building next to the walls stood the wooden sign in which the words "Bartista Hard Rock Cafè" were carved, surrounded by ivy plants that covered part of the facade and fell on the sides of the main entrance. Jon had then asked John Cena if it was all a crazy coincidence that Batista was called Batista and was a barista, but John Cena had simply ignored him and opened the glass door. As soon as he was inside, Jon immediately smelled an intense scent of sweets and fresh coffee, which warmed him like no fire he had been able to do before. The walls of the cafeteria were dark wood, some with shelves carved into them in which various books floated and fell into place by themselves, while others were decorated with paintings of summer vegetables and cornucopias. The environment was bright and warm, and various vases with beautiful plants hung from the ceiling which made everything more rustic and inviting. On the wooden-framed windows hung elegant cream-colored curtains with bottoms embroidered in various laces tied elegantly with pumpkin-colored bows. Next to the imposing counter there was a display case with delicacies that Jon had never seen in his life - chocolate biscuits, cream puffs, brioches, some tarts. Next to them stood a card on which a good-looking boy wearing sunglasses held a cranberry tart next to his face. Jon approached the window, curious to know who he was. "If you want something just ask." a voice boomed above him, and Jon looked up in fear.

In front of him stood the biggest boy Jon had ever seen, his sculptural and abnormal muscles instilling terror at the mere sight of him. The boy, with short black hair and an earring in his lobe, was wearing a simple black t-shirt and a white apron on which the words "The Animal" stood out in red. He had to be at least a foot taller than him, and this, combined with the sight of his powerful arms crossed over his chest, was enough to make him step back. "Batista!" John Cena greeted him with a cheerful smile. "I brought you the Guardian I told you about!" The giant's face melted into a big smile and he walked around the counter and then planted an even more violent slap than Cena's on Jon's shoulder. Jon thought that maybe he was even justified in using the amulet to call Mysterio at that point, because surely his back must have been broken. "You're the one who got clawed in the face! You're a hero!" Batista began to shake him slightly and then shook his hand with his hand which was three or four times bigger than Jon's. "Nice to meet you, Dave Batista, I'm a bartender!" "P-pleasure, Jon Snow…I'm the Guardian." Jon muttered still shaken by the pat. "Look, Batista, Jon and I were-" "Do you hear it…" John Cena was interrupted by a shrill voice coming from the kitchen, the door of which suddenly flew open. “What is The Rock cooking?!”

The same boy depicted on the cake card came out of the kitchen and, with some violence, placed the tart decorated with purple, green and black stripes that he was holding in his hand in the display case. Jon angrily watched the cake in the card magically change and resemble the one he had just placed on the counter. Even the boy, who despite having just come out of the kitchen was wearing sunglasses, was a foot taller than Jon and full of muscles, and Jon was starting to feel like an ant in a sea of giants. "Rocky! Jon, this is Rocky, or the Rock, you name it. He's the cook for the cafeteria!" John Cena explained, and Jon waved shyly with one hand. The boy didn't seem to pay much attention to him, he just raised an eyebrow unnaturally. "You come at the right time, Jon and I were thinking of going to Undertaker to look for someone…why don't you both join?" "But yes, there are no customers at the moment anyway." Batista smiled and crossed his arms over his chest. "The Rock can't." The Rock said as he quickly jerked his head towards John Cena. Jon wondered if his sunglasses were glued to his nose. "The Rock needs to train to make the Intercontinental team's special cakes." "Oh, that's a shame. Never mind, next time." John Cena shrugged, and The Rock turned his head away, nodded at nothing and went back into the kitchen, slamming the door violently. Jon was starting to think that Misterio, despite being a damn centaur, was the most normal person in Winter Hogwarts. "Well, shall we go?" Batista pushed Jon out of the cafeteria. Jon couldn't wait to find Misterio.

Big Bend Chapter Eleven

A/n: finally getting back to uploading these chapters semi regularly, so excited to have time to work on this story again because it’s such a fun one to write and easton and dave r truly my comfort ocs

Normally when Abbey came to visit, Hannah was left wracking her mind trying to come up with things to keep the young girl entertained. She always enjoyed seeing her niece, of course, but there wasn’t a ton to do in her small town for adults that was interesting - much less an 8 year old girl. This time, though, Abbey had barely climbed out of the car with her mother, Ella, when she was excitedly asking Hannah to go meet the park ranger from Aphiria.

Yeah, that hiring decision really was a good call on the government’s part for boosting visitation, she thought. She glanced over at Ella, waiting to see her sister’s reaction.

“That could be fun!” Ella said. “You’ve met him, right, Hannah?”

“I have. He’s very nice. Well, if you both want to, I suppose we have something to do this trip!” Hannah said. She paused. “We could even make an overnight trip of it, get my old tent.”

“I want to go camping! Mom, can we go camping?” Abbey said excitedly.

“If you don’t think it’ll be too much trouble, being away from the shop?” Ella asked. Hannah shook her head.

“I had the next three days off anyways, with you two coming to visit.”

“Yes!” Abbey said excitedly. That settled it, and the next morning, Hannah found herself piling her tent and an assortment of other items in the back of her car. Abbey was all smiles, and Hannah thought she seemed far too awake for the early hour.

“What’s he like? Is he really that tall?” Abbey asked.

“Well, you’ll see for yourself in a few hours, won’t you?” Hannah asked.

“Does he have sharp teeth? Kids at my school said Aphirials have sharp teeth. And claws!” Abbey said.

“Don’t ask him about that,” Ella said, shaking her head slightly.

“That’s why I’m asking you!”

Hannah snorted. “Well, he doesn’t have claws. I don’t spend that much time trying to see people’s teeth, though,” she said. Admittedly, she assumed that Easton probably did have sharp teeth, but she hadn’t actually seen them herself. She also thought she’d heard something about aphirials having claws as well, but assumed he possibly just kept them cut short if that was true. That seemed like a fair enough guess, given how much he interacted with humans and how claws would likely only make that more difficult.

“Is he loud? I feel like a giant would be loud. Is he taller than our apartment?” Abbey asked. Ella and Hannah exchanged an amused glance at her endless questions as the three climbed into Hannah’s car. On the way there, Hannah found herself wondering if John would be around again. She guessed yes; it seemed like he generally was in charge of working alongside Easton. When they arrived at the park, it was a little past 8am. Despite that, the entryway was already filling up with cars. Way more than Hannah was used to seeing at that time. They’d barely made it past the gates when the impossibly huge figure that was Easton came into view.

God, I still have not gotten used to that, Hannah thought, her gaze trailing upwards towards the giant’s face, looming above the visitor center. She realized with a jolt she’d yet to see him standing up. Even sitting, he had to be almost a hundred feet tall. Far taller than the three story building that made up the visitor center. She heard Abbey exclaim in excitement as she notice too.

“Oh my gosh, he’s even taller than I thought! Mom, he’s way taller than our apartment building!” Abbey said, pressing her face against the window to get a closer view.

“Yeah,” Ella said, and Hannah got the distinct impression she was trying to keep her voice as level as possible despite the shock.

“He really is super nice, too,” Hannah offered. “He loves flowers.”

They pulled into an empty parking spot, and Abbey had climbed out of the car almost before the engine was shut off.

“Wait for us!” Ella said. Hannah glanced over at her sister, silently asking if she was good with a raised eyebrow.

“I knew Aphirirals were giant compared to us but…”

“Different actually seeing one?” Hannah finished. Ella gave a soft nod. She looked over towards Abbey, who was standing in front of the car impatiently.

“She seems excited, at least.”

Ella pushed open the passenger side door, and the three of them headed towards the visitor center.

They’d scarcely stepped into the patio behind the visitor center when Hannah heard a familiar voice that immediately brought a small smile to her face.

“Hannah!” John walked over to her, giving a friendly wave, and she felt her heart skip a beat. She quickly pushed the feeling away, returning his smile.

“Hey!” She said.

“I really have been meaning to get down to your thrift shop one of these days, I swear,” John said with an awkward laugh.

“Oh, no worries. I’m sure work keeps you plenty busy,” Hannah said,

“That it does,” John said. “It’s a great place to work, though. Who are these two lovely ladies?”

“This is my sister, Ella, and her daughter, Abbey. Abbey’s just been dying to meet Ranger Parks-Easton,” Hannah said. “Ella, Abbey, this is John - he works here at the park.”

Hannah realized she still wasn’t sure what John’s official title was - it probably wasn’t “mysterious operations guy”.

“It’s nice to meet you both,” John said. “So, you’ve been wanting to meet Easton?”

Abbey nodded eagerly. “I told all my friends from school I was going to, they think he sounds so cool!”

“Well, why keep you waiting then,” John said with a friendly smile. “C’mon.”

He gestured for them to follow him over to where Easton was sitting, currently talking with a couple on the rooftop observation deck of the visitor center. Hannah wondered for a moment if Easton would even notice them approaching. They were probably a little smaller than the size of mice to him, afterall, and he seemed pretty engaged in the conversation he was having. A brief glance from him down towards them quickly proved that notion false. She supposed she shouldn’t have been surprised. Besides how Aphirials had senses far keener than humans, it made sense that Easton would try to be continuously aware of his environment. He finished talking with the couple, then turned his attention down towards them.

“Hannah! It’s nice to see you again,” he said.

“You too,” Hannah replied. She saw her sister inhale sharply, taking a smaller step backwards.

“Hannah’s sister, Ella, and her niece, Abbey, was it-“ John glanced down at Abbey, who gave an enthusiastic nod. In stark contrast to Ella, she looked like she was bursting with excitement. “Are in town visiting, and Abbey was just dying to meet you, I hear!”

“You’re even more giant than I imagined!” Abbey said. “I mean, it’s nice to meet you,” she amended quickly, glancing back at her mother.

Easton gave a soft laugh. “I’ve heard I am a bit tall,” he said jokingly. “It’s nice to meet you too. Both of you,” he said, glancing over at Ella. Ella gave a restrained nod.

“A bit tall? You’re super tall!” Abbey said. “Like, as tall as some of the really tall buildings in my city. Wait, is it hard for you to hear me? I can be louder?”

Easton shook his head. “I can hear you fine, don’t worry.” He lowered his voice to a stage whisper. “I have super hearing.”

“That’s so cool! I wish I had super hearing. Then I’d know what my mom got me for Christmas when she’s telling Aunt Hannah. Do they have Christmas where you come from?”

Hannah felt an amused smile cross her face watching Abbey talk to Easton. She had been worried her niece might annoy him, but now realized that concern had apparently been unfounded. He seemed as happy to answer her questions as talk to any other guest. She glanced over at her sister, trying to gauge how Ella seemed to be taking this in, just in time to see a sandy haired man in a ranger’s uniform walking up to them. She noticed Easton glance over at him as he approached briefly to, and she thought she saw the man tense at that. That seemed odd; she would have thought someone who worked alongside Easton would be more at ease around him. Like John seemed to be.

“Morning,” the newcomer said, walking up to John. He glanced over to them. “I don’t believe we’ve met - I’m Dave,” he said, extending his hand to Ella and Hannah. They introduced themselves, learning that Dave was another fresh face at the park. John explained that Dave, along with two others, had all been hired at the same time as Easton, as part of the whole joint venture with Aphiria.

“You should probably ask your mom about that,” Easton said, drawing Hannah’s attention back to Abbey.

“Can Easton pick me up, Mom? Please?” Abbey asked. Ella gave an uncertain glance to John and Hannah.

“He’s always very careful, but we entirely understand whatever you’re comfortable with,” John said.

“I can go with her,” Hannah offered, the words slipping out of her mouth in a half whispered voice to Ella before she could fully think them through. While she did think Easton was nice and almost certainly trustworthy, she’d never been the biggest fan of heights. It seemed like it was too late for that, though, because she saw Ella relax slightly at that suggestion. She nodded.

“If your aunt Hannah goes with you,” she said, mouthing a quick thank you to Hannah.

Yep, way too late for regrets, Hannah said, watching Abbey practically jump up and down with excitement at that. How bad can it be? She glanced up at the rooftop of the building, swallowing at how suddenly and simultaneously tall and short it looked compared to Easton. She gave a small shake of her head, hoping to dislodge her creeping anxiety, and walked over closer to Easton, where Abbey stood.

“Thank you Hannah!” Abbey said. “This is going to be so cool!”

“Yeah,” Hannah said. She glanced up at Easton, who gave her a reassuring smile, apparently picking up on her hesitation.

“I’ll only lift you up to the height of the observation deck,” he said. “So, basically, I’ll let you both climb into my hand, and I won’t move until you’re both ready. When I do pick you up, please stay still and stay in the center of my hand, okay?”

“Okay!” Abbey said.

“Got it,” Hannah replied. Easton lowered his hand to the ground, bending over slightly. Hannah once again was struck by just how giant the giant was as she approached his hand. A single one of his fingers was taller than she was. She took that moment to say a silent thank you that he didn’t have claws, whatever the reason for that was - she really didn’t need to be feeling anymore intimidated that she already was.

“So just, climb onto your hand?” She double checked, glancing up at Easton.

“Yeah. Don’t worry, you won’t hurt me,” he joked. She glanced at Abbey, who was smiling brightly beside her, and took a deep breath. It was a very weird feeling climbing onto what was effectively a giant human hand. The surface was warm - alive. The fine details she wouldn’t have normally even noticed were far more apparent at such a scale. A single freckle on Easton’s palm was probably half the size of her own hand. She took another steadying breath, then turned around to help Abbey up. Her niece didn’t seem to share any of her hesitation, instead far too thrilled about the situation to feel any fear.

She and Abbey got settled as much in the center of Easton’s palm as they could, and then she looked up at him.

“Okay, we’re ready,” she said.

“Wonderful!” Easton said. He lifted them up far more slowly than she’d been expecting, much to her relief, and stopped level with the roof just as he’d said she would. She looked out the park, and then glanced up at Easton.

He’s got to have an amazing view, she thought.

“You two still alright?” Easton asked.

“This is so cool!!” Abbey said. “It’s like that scene from King Kong. I mean, but not scary, of course.”

“Well, I’m glad it’s not scary,” Easton said. If he knew what King Kong was, or was bothered by being compared to a monster movie, he didn’t show it.

“It is really pretty up here,” Hannah admitted, gazing out at the vast wilderness that surrounded them.

“It’s a gorgeous park,” Easton agreed, following her gaze. “I’m really glad I got to come work here.”

“Do you eat whole cows?” Abbey’s question shattered the moment of silence looking out at the landscape, and Hannah wasn’t sure whether she should laugh at the timing or remind Abbey to be polite. Easton took it in stride, giving a slight shake of his head.

“I’m a vegetarian,” he said. “So, I don’t eat any cows. Whole or otherwise.”

“I knew Max was making that up. He’s a boy in my class, and he thinks he knows everything, but I knew he was wrong,” Abbey said. Easton chuckled at that.

“Well, you can tell him the only thing I eat whole is salads,” Easton said.

“I wanted to be a vegetarian one time. I like bacon too much, though,” Abbey said.

“I’ve heard bacon is pretty good,” Easton agreed. Abbey nodded.

“It’s really good.”

By the time Easton lowered them back to the ground, Hannah was feeling far more at ease than when she’d initially climbed onto his hand. Both from getting used to the situation and the careful and cautious way he treated them. Abbey hopped off, running over to her mom.

“That was so cool! He’s like, the best park ranger ever!” Abbey said. Her mom smiled, also seeming more relaxed - most likely because they were both safely on the ground again. Hannah was close behind Abbey, stopping to thank Easton for both being so careful and humoring Abbey’s questions.

“Of course! She seems like a good kid,” Easton said.

“She really is,” Hannah said.

“So, how was it?” John asked.

“Not as terrifying as I thought it would be,” Hannah said with a short laugh. She glanced back at Easton. “Not as terrifying at all.”

- of course, there will be some problems to work through in your relationship, he needs somebody who can get him to open up and talk about his emotions. It’s hard but he can succeed if he tries at it.

- he would hesitate for a long time to tell you how he felt about you, but I think his friends would be really encouraging about it.

- speaking of, Hal does a lot of things to embarrass dirk and expose him for his affections to you, even while you’re dating.

He is a little bit upset about it but he's not showing it.

If you make any silly jokes he finds it annoying yet he just can't get mad at you.

In the end it's not that important. On everyday basis he barley notices it. Although he used to pay a lot of attention to that but I guess he got used to it.

Rose Lalonde

Never really paid attention to that and even if it's pointed out she shrugs it off.

Sometimes would ask you if you could get something for her when she can't reach it.

That's the only time where she thinks about your height difference. Other than that? Nothing.

Jade Harley

Sometimes she can be a little pouty about it. When she can't reach something and struggles for a while and you just take it without a problem, that's when you can expect her to be a little bit moody for a minute or two.

She also finds it frustrating when she has to ask you to lean down so she can kiss you.

If you point out being taller she will point out bonuses of being short.

Dave Strider

Makes some jokes about it from time to time. It all depends on what the difference between you two is but it varies from calling you a gigant to the famous how's the weather joke.

Other than these remarks he doesn't do anything special. He's not the shortest himself so he doesn't have to ask for your help or anything.

She's pretty used to doing things on her own so whenever she has an issue where her height puts her at disadvantage she knows what to do so she rarely asks for any help.

If you have something to say about it she'd ignore you. She won't give you that satisfaction.

But she does find the fact that you're tall as a plus.

Roxy Lalonde

You're her lovely giant no matter what your difference is. She likes to think of nicknames but she also just likes to go with your name.

She always finds a way to force you to lean down so she can kiss you. Of course she knows her way up too.

She will often ask for help even when she doesn't really need it. She just wants to look at you.

Jake English

No matter often he's reminded of your height difference he's still just as surprised as ever whenever he notices it.

Not that it's bad, his reactions are cute and he also is surprised but in a good way.

He likes to think about how being taller would change his adventures both for the better and for the worse. His theories can't just stay in his head but whether you'll join him or not is your decision to make.

Dirk Strider

He never paid mind to it. At all.

Whenever you use your height to your advantage he just thinks of it as you being you. Nothing special happening there, but you're special to him.

Sometimes it's like he forgets about height altogether. But in the end he unconsciously likes when you stand next to each other and you tower over him.
