CONGRATULATIONS  JIN ZIHAO
Welcome to Blue Devils! Legacy for an orphan is a fable made up in parts - with gaps and holes that zig zag in mystery. Zihao's story is one that's constructed from hunger and empty hands, outstretched and craving for more. Humanity and ambition; he's a boy who rises beyond his circumstances, beyond the history that speckles with the unknown. Zihao's journey is one that is colored in mirth and grief. "Boy came to realise being nameless meant being unwanted. His whore mother dies and leaves him with nothing but an empty stomach and her rotting corpse in his bed, and he runs far away. The stench of her decay lives in his memory. " You've written Zihao with so much life and strength in all the turmoil that threatens to dismantle the ease of his carefree nature; we're left with bated breath to see what will become of the final Pirate King's child.
congratulations again on your acceptance, please make sure to review the checklist and send in your account & discord info within the next 48 hours!

Why are you willing to hurt me?
I hope that beast Jin Feiren dies and Bai Zihao heals from all this trauma and meets someone that truly values him. Bai Zihao is a good person, he doesn't deserve any of this.

Shenzhen's First World Go Champion!
On June 17th, in the third game of the finals of the first "Quzhou Lanke Cup" World Go Open, Chinese player Gu Zihao from Shenzhen, playing as black, displayed his strong and aggressive playing style, defeating South Korean player Shin Jin-seo with a total score of 2-1 to win the World Go Open championship. This is Gu Zihao's second world championship win, six years after his first win in 2017.
Currently registered with the Shenzhen Mass Sports Promotion Center, Gu Zihao is the first Shenzhen player to win a world championship in Go. Following Wang Xinyu's victory in women's doubles at the French Open tennis tournament, Shenzhen sports has achieved another breakthrough!
It is worth mentioning that the last time a Chinese player defeated a South Korean player in a world championship final was in November 2020 at the 25th Samsung Cup, where Ke Jie defeated Shin Jin-seo 2-0 to win the championship. Gu Zihao's victory over Shin Jin-seo in three games at the "Quzhou Lanke Cup" World Go Open is of great significance.

Legend of the White Snake - Episode 14
Tumblr media
Wow. Three weeks have gone by real fast. Is February already almost over? What? So my computer decided to revive yay! I really didn’t want to watch the rest of the show without doing my reviews, because I don’t like leaving things unattended too and I don’t know. I like to write those recap on the spot, without knowing what is going to happen next. Let’s pray that my computer will still work until at least when I am done with this drama. Which I hope would be this week since I have 7 days off!
So where were we? Yes, Suzhen and Xu Xian are getting ready to be married and Ruyi finally came back with some strange man with her. Frog guy. His eyes are scaring me. So anyways, Xu Xian was worried about her, but she plays independent now that she has a new guy to take care of her. Xu Xian asks her about who is that weirdo, his name is Daoling and since Xu Xian doesn’t want to take of her, well he is. And I would say, he’s crazy go along with her, his misery is just starting. Even more now that Xu Xian just tells her that he’s relieved she found someone to take good care of her and invites her to come to his wedding with Suzhen. She’s so upset about it. So she’s like, please come too to my wedding with Daoling, I am planning to give him Jishi tang. She’s so desperate to make him jealous, but he’s so not. So he says okay, I will give you back the account books and resign from my work too. And she gets mad and accuses Suzhen of forcing him to cut ties, but wow. That Xu Xian though. So patient with her and just asks of her not to ill talk of Suzhen.
Woops. Ruyi now made Frog guy angry. She tells him he’s too ugly for her to actually get married to him, he’s no match for Xu Xian and she only said they will get married to make him angry. Poor guy. Run away from that girl, she’s no good for you. No matter how nice you would be to her, she’s obsessed with Xu Xian.
Awwww. They are so cute at the wedding. Big sis and big bro are so happy too. Only Ruyi is crying. But she did smile a little too though. Is it just me or Chinese wedding clothes, traditional ones I mean, are so beautiful.
Awwwww. Xu Xian is so cute. He just stares at her because he’s afraid she would disappear, that he’s just dreaming. Xu Xian is annoyingly naive at some point, but. I would marry a guy like that whenever. AWWWW. SO SHE STANDS UP AND KISSES HIM ON THE CHEEK TO WAKE HIM UP FROM THE DREAM. The look in his eyes. They are just way too cute.
So Qing Er and the guys are a little drunk and she asks what it is to.. hm... how to translate that accurately? 成亲 (chéngqīn) is used when people are getting married, but it means more than just the wedding in itself. It’s like... becoming family? But it can only be used between spouses, you can’t say that about like... your parents get married again and their partner has kids, those new siblings, it’s not 成亲 (chéngqīn). I don’t know if clear? I didn’t check the translation for the subtitles, but I think it’s important to understand that because otherwise the next dialogue isn’t as funny. So since none of them were wed in the past, they all don’t really know. So one of them says it’s about sharing a bedroom, so another then asks are they not all in that situation then, since they all share a room since such a long time? Hahaha. So they debate a little about that, and it’s pretty funny. Then Qing Er suggest they all go find themselves a partner, because it looks fun. So pure haha.
Awww. Poor Jing Song. I still like him. He’s so sad.
Fahai’s master is a little sick, but he says there’s nothing to worry and asks him if he found anything during his stay in town. Fahai is starting to have doubts about Suzhen. Is she still a demon now that she doesn’t have core anymore and give it to Xu Xian to fight the poison killing him and now that Xu Xian has that core, is he still a human. So his master tells, to make the difference between man and demon, you should use your heart. Awww.
Wow. Suzhen is already really comfortable in her new house. She threw away to burn all the old furniture to replace it with new ones. Poor Jiaorong. But forgive her, she means well and she doesn’t know about the ways of humans. Aww poor sis, she’s so upset, but at least, I believe her little brother is really good at making her happy.
Suzhen studies the way normal people earn and spend money. I guess she understands why you can’t just throw away things like that and change them for new ones. Just then, Xu Xian comes back gives his salary to Suzhen and Qing Er is already ready to spend it all. Suzhen tells no, she just told her about the value of money and Xu Xian tells her he earns it for her to spend it. But then, he pretends he has to go back to the pharmacy... But hasn’t her resigned? I hope he won’t overwork himself to provide for a lot of money for his wife. I mean, she’s a snake, she can live with not a lot easily. Poor him. But since he left in such a hurry, she didn’t have the time to give him a lunchbox, so she decides to hurry and send it to him at Jishi tang. Yep. Of course they are kicked out and Ruyi tells them Xu Xian doesn’t work there anymore.
Suzhen feels bad because she knows his relationship with Ruyi became like this because of her and while Qing Er is angry at Xu Xian for not saying it, Suzhen just knows he pretended like nothing happened not to worry her and make her sad. Those two TT. They finally find him, going inside a pharmacy to look for work, but then... he won’t be hired. And nobody will because he was a student at Jishi tang for so many years, that if they hire him, it would hurt the affairs of Jishi tang and it’s like bullying Ruyi. Because she’s just a girl taking care of it by herself. Qing Er wants to teach a lesson to Ruyi, but Suzhen stops her from doing so, because she knows Xu Xian won’t want to hurt her since they grew up together.
invisible, Suzhen and Qing Er stayed in, but actually... it’s not because of what the man said that Xu Xian can’t get a job. He actually wanted him, but the big boss said no and he managed to make sure that nobody will hire him. So sad. Basically, he wants him to have nowhere to go so later he can bring him in as his benefactor. Which would be so bad for him. Qing Er still takes revenge by sending mosquitos at him.
Later that night, Suzhen goes and meet with him, she lets him know she went to send him a night lunch at Jishi tang but then learnt that he’s not working there. He wants to apologize for hiding it from her, but she says it’s okay and just asks him to have a walk with her to look around the city. He wants to buy her some stuff to make her happy, but she says she doesn’t want anything because she doesn’t want to burden him. That’s something I like a lot about those two. They understand each other very well, Suzhen especially understands Xu Xian, and they take such good care of each other. So he pretends he forgot his money pouch to get something for her, I am sure. How cute.
He feels bad for not buying anything, since she comes from a rich family, but she says she’d rather be with him than anything else. Oh yes he did buy her something TT Because she’s so nice that spending a thousand gold for her would never be enough. They... I... I just can’t. They are way too adorable.
Awwww. She likes the pin so much, she keeps looking at it. Qing Er teases her about how cheesy she is with Xu Xian and they are about to use magic to fight, but then Suzhen is like. NOOOOO. THIS VASE! We shouldn’t break objects. Was about time you know about it. Well that’s because it’s old. Then they think of the stuff at Suzhen’s place and they make it old again, because now they know old stuff has more value than new ones and if they sell them, they can help Xu Xian.
Ruyi bumps into Xu Xian while he is rejected again for work and hopes he regrets his choice, but he says he doesn’t. It’s okay she hates him, but he wishes her to be happy, because resentment is not worth anything and will prevent them from stepping in their new life. Ruyi is upset that he’s willing to be poor just to be with Suzhen. And she tells him that Suzhen is selling the stuff she owns to help him. So he runs to it. Oh god. Poor him. Suzhen doesn’t understand that... even though she means well, Chinese guys have to preserve face. Like, having his wife making money for him, that’s losing face. So he runs to go to Suzhen. About that one, Ruyi’s right: she understands him better than Suzhen. But just on that matter.
Xu Xian tells Suzhen to get everything back. He feels already bad enough that she has to go through all of this because of him, but he doesn’t want her to use her family’s money. She doesn’t want to take the things back, because she doesn’t care about them, but he takes the money pouch and goes to take everything back.
First quarrel as husband and wife. Suzhen is pouting so much haha. She’s probably thinking “why won’t you accept my help, I am just doing my best too because I want to share all of your burdens” while he’s thinking “I want you to live carefree and I want to take care of you so won’t have a worry in your life”. Poor Suzhen, she’s sad that he doesn’t want her money because she thinks he sees them separately. Since he won’t accept her money, she want’s to throw away the hairpin he gave her. She’s so petty somehow. I love that they don’t portray Suzhen as a perfect deity or something like that. It’s nice that she has a bad character too sometimes.
Then, an old couple comes by. The lady is blind and her husband is taking her on a boat cruise on West Lake because even though it’s expensive and she can’t, she just wants to be on the lake and breath fresh air. Suzhen helps her get on the boat, as she almost fell down and the boat driver (how do you call that haha) asks her if she wants to take the boat too. She agrees and right then Xu Xian comes and says he wants to ride the boat with her too. She’s still a little angry, but I believe in Xu Xian’s ability to make her happy. He’s a smooth talker. On the boat, the old couple talks about how she saved money to take a ride on the boat and the lady is surprised that her husband even knew.
Xu Xian tells Suzhen he wasn’t angry at her, and like I said earlier, he just wants her to live without any burden. It’s not because he wants to keep separate count of what’s his and what’s hers. Finally, they make up, thanks to that old lady. What a nice comparison though. No matter what weather, West Lake is always a scenery. No matter what happens between a couple, happiness, sadness, it’s still coming in a package to make something beautiful. And it’s so true. No matter if it rains or if it’s a clear, West Lake is ALWAYS beautiful. I really recommend everyone to go have walk by the West Lake at least once in their life. If possible, in july, when the lotus flowers are blooming. You will never see something more gorgeous.
Qing Er finds a way to make money too so she can eat meat before she becomes a vegetable. So she decides to earn the money by performing. They try to hide it from Suzhen and Xu Xian. But then, Ruyi comes out and it comes down to nothing because she makes into a liar and everybody wants their money back. Just right then, Suzhen and Xu Xian comes in. And Suzhen calls Qing Er’s name. That’s going to be a mess. Poor Xu Xian and Suzhen.
They just made up from their first couple fight and that happens. But I can’t really blame Qing Er. She didn’t mean harm, but she should have listened and not try to earn money by using dishonest means. And I am really thinking, that poor Xu Xian. Not losing face is so important for a man in China... With all of this, it looks like he’s unable to provide for his wife ): And like, don’t think of getting married if you can’t provide for your wife.
I hope everything ends up well. Without them needing to move out of town haha. Just open your own practice already. You’ll make plenty of money, everybody wants to be treated by you.

赤子 CHIZI / THE HEART OF AN INFANT
INTRODUCTION
赤子 Chizi (spotify link here, YouTube link here) is the seventh song on the CQL album, and performed by Yu Bin as Wen Ning’s character song.
The title is a reference to the concept of 赤子之心 chizi zhixin—literally “the heart of an infant.” The chengyu refers to a virtuous state of mind and heart that finds its origins in Mengzian thought. Mengzi, unlike some of his contemporaries, believed in the fundamental goodness of human nature, stating that “大人者,不失其赤子之心者也” / “a great man is one who does not lose his infant’s heart.” Considered simple, pure, innocent, and good, the heart of an infant is generally used to praise people for their benevolent virtue.

ANNOTATIONS:
[1] 擦肩的人 cajian deren is just a little more complex than “passerbys”—it’s derived from the chengyu 擦肩而过 cajian erguo, which means “to brush shoulders as one passes by.” It is often used more figuratively to describe a fleeting moment of contact.
[2] I just wanted to qualify this line—生在淤泥 born in mud—because it’s much more literary in the original in a way that I couldn’t figure out how to render in translation. I like to think that it resonates nicely with the Northern Song essay 《爱莲说》 Ailianshuo, though that is likely more of a coincidence than deliberate reference.
[3] There’s a bit more to be teased out with this line: the concept of 原本 yuanben, rendered here as “not forgetting where I began” is closely associated with similar binomes like本质 benzhi / “essence” “innate character,” 本心 benxin / “original heart,” and 本意 benyi / “original intentions.” The question of “original heart” and “original intentions” is a central theme of wuxia and xianxia literature, which often explore how characters change and develop in response to obtaining great power (the challenge being, of course, to maintain the heart of an infant even when given the power to level mountains).
[4] Here, the lyrics once more evoke the metaphorical concept of 尘 chen / “dust” as a way of referring to the way elements of mortal life contaminate and entangle the people trapped within it.
[5] There is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it reference to a Buddhist term: 修罗 xiuluo is an abbreviation of 阿修罗 a-xiuluo, which is the Classical Chinese transliteration of “asura.” Generally speaking, asuras are supernatural and superhuman beings associated with warfare and combat. A fuller translation of this line, attempting to incorporate the Buddhist reference, might be: “Even if this body is covered in Asura-like scars.”
ONCE MORE WITH CLARITY VERSION:
Passerbys,
passing cities,
take root in my heart
Born in mud,
body in prison,
still, I do not forget how I began
However many favors and resentments,
however many partings,
churning in this chaotic world
Travelling through dangers
I record love and hate with no regrets
I do not fear becoming enemies with the entire world
so long as I see approval in your eyes
A heart as simple as an infant’s
Unstained by any dust or ash
I thread through all the conflicts
to be eternally at your side
A heart as innocent as an infant’s
Even if this body is covered in scars
I’ll use what’s left of this life to fight for you
Robed in white,
as in youth,
who can testify to my character?
Edgeless memories
woven into spiderwebs
grass and bush grow thick and deep
No matter how many storms,
no matter how many people from the past,
no matter how diligent I am
Travelling through dangers
I record love and hate with no regrets
I do not fear becoming enemies with the entire world
so long as I see approval in your eyes
A heart as simple as an infant’s
Unstained by any dust or ash
I thread through all the conflicts
to be eternally at your side
A heart as innocent as an infant’s
Even if this body is covered in scars
I’ll use what’s left of this life to fight for you

Could I ask more about Jin Zihao? I love his look! I rarely see next-gen junior OCs in the fandom.
We need so many more next gen juniors honestlyyyy, like there’s so much about the juniors grown up and leading sects but where are their kiddos?!?!
Disclaimer that these details are subject to change as I write more, since Jin Zihao wasn’t created until I started ‘Letters Never Sent.’ All of this info is related to the storyline of my fic:
• Jin Ling found Jin Zihao on the streets of Lanling shortly after Jin Ling became a sect leader—around the same time that Lan Sizhui left to travel and cultivate with Wen Ning. Jin Zihao was 10-years-old at the time, with seemingly no knowledge of his name or family and Jin Ling decided to take him in as a disciple.
• Spending so much time with Jin Ling, Jin Zihao shows a proficiency for archery and hunts with Jin Ling every morning—though it’s created a bit of a rift amongst his peers, since they feel as though Jin Ling favors Jin Zihao (and honestly, he does). Because of this, Jin Zihao has experienced some bullying and ostracism from the other Jin juniors, some of whom think he doesn’t belong in the clan because he’s not a Jin by blood (not that they can prove it because JGS couldn’t keep it in his pants for 2 seconds lmaoo)
• Jin Zihao idolizes Lan Sizhui, even without having met him, because Jin Ling simply doesn’t shut up about him. In my fic, Jin Ling is angry at Lan Sizhui for leaving so abruptly and disappearing for 3 years with no contact—but his admiration for Lan Sizhui never diminishes and it shines through Jin Zihao, who’s entirely starstruck when he finally meets Lan Sizhui.
• Jin Zihao loves Lan Jingyi, and vice versa. Lan Jingyi was there from day one since him and Jin Ling became best friends, making Lan Jingyi an older brother/uncle-figure in Jin Zihao’s life. He also likes Lan Jingyi because he’s the “cool” brother who lets him get away with anything that Jin Ling might scold him for 💀
• Jin Zihao is an incredibly good kid, however. Doesn’t get into trouble, very respectful, a fast learner and endlessly compassionate. His curiosity sometimes gets him into difficult situations, which he definitely learned from Jin Ling, but he’s got Jin Ling, Lan Sizhui, and Lan Jingyi (and even Ouyang Zizhen) looking out for him always so he’ll always be okay.
• Jin Zihao has a tattered, wonky little cat plushie that he was clutching when Jin Ling found him—and even at 13-years-old, he always sleeps with it. Sometimes, he even takes it with him on night hunts as a good luck charm and claims it’s the only thing he has left from his parents since he remembers them giving it to him, which is the extent of his memories from childhood.

Not to be like "we should psychologically torture Bai Zihao until we figure out how to fix him!" but I wonder what his dream would be if he were subjected to the fantasy gu. He's spent so long being tortured and abused by Jin Feiren, he doesn't trust himself anymore, so if all of that was wiped away for a moment, what would he want?

OMG, I really really loved the stuff about Bai Zihao - this author is so good at never dropping any narrative threads.
Because BZH was the one Song Qingshi was sent to rescue and he didn’t but BZH ended up winning the heart of the psychotic owner of Golden Phoenix Manor and the latter even married him and I remember having a bad taste about it, because Jin Feiren was a rapist and an abuser and just because BZH wasn’t as abused as Yue Wuhuan, it still was not a good situation. And you saw little bits - he didn’t have the spine YWH had but he knew on a level that this wasn’t a good relationship, this wasn’t love (even as he also got warped by his environment into thinking things are normal that are not and abusive treatment is normal when it’s not.)
And then we find out when Yue Wuhuan descended on the manor and slaughtered 99% of the cultivators in it (except one who was decent to him) and a chunk of the slaves (after mental probes - the ones who enjoyed the suffering or inflicted some on others.) He took Jin Feiren with him and BZH fully expected to be slaughtered and was fine with it because as he said, JFR is his husband and BZH sat by and did nothing to save others because he was too terrified it would be him instead.
And YWH...did not. He basically sent him out for ten years and said to come find him after that decade. And he dropped him in a small peaceful village with enough money for a decent but not luxuriant lifestyle and sent an adjutant of his (disguised) to nudge him into normalcy and basically BZH got to live for a decade slowly emerging out of his traumatized shell and getting to know the villagers and doing normal things like digging a fish pond or growing grapes, and eventually becoming a village teacher and just having a NORMAL life, which is something he’s never had since he was sold as a teen. And you can see him basically revert to normalcy and emerge out of trauma and gaslighting and it’s so lovely.
I love that YWH, who went through such extreme levels of horror and abuse himself still has compassion even though he genuinely believes he does not - that he looks at BZH and gets that trauma and abuse takes many forms; that he doesn’t go “well, I had it worse, how dare he have it better than me” but gets that BZH is a fellow abuse victim.
And I love how BZH, who’s been told he has no worth and no talent and can’t, for example, draw at all or cultivate or anything, slowly discovers that he’s actually amazing at drawing and has cultivation ability and can also make friends and isn’t just good for sex basically (and JFR drummed into his head that he should be happy to be married to his abuser in the lowest rank of marriage because hey he has no abilities and look how he enjoys being abused in bed and who’d want a talentless slutty spouse - when it’s clear JFR did that so he’d think he is not worth anything and be grateful for even abuse; and yeah of course he tells his victim he wants all the abuse; he’s not going to say “you have convinced yourself you are OK with it because you want to survive and I brainwashed you some more, no you don’t want it, not really”)
So he basically becomes a person who’s functional and who has self-worth and then he comes back after a decade and YWH tells him that he has three choices - he can go live with JFR in the dungeon, he can kill himself (and then YWH will off JFR) or he can kill JFR and be free. And also gives him evidence that his mother died because JFR hired a slave dealer to find him a perfect pretty slave with no family for JFR to groom.
And BZH goes into that dungeon and murders JFR (and I cheered!!!) and he realizes that the lord of the peak is YWH but never says anything (and I love that because he gets deeply why YWH wouldn’t want to say that) and there is the whole thing where he decides to come out of his cage to follow him but the thing is - at that point he’s already out of that cage anyway, and I love it sooo much! And then he becomes lord of cultivation sect of assassins/bounty hunters who track and take down bad guys for YWH.
(There is the whole thing about his on-off thing with the adjutant which is fascinating and could be its own novel because BZH thought adjutant was a girl (long story) and he genuinely didn’t think he could be attracted to women so he was extra excited to like her so he could be “normal” and they went to bed, it turned out obviously not to be the case and BZH basically refuses to get involved with men for obvious reasons AND he’s got issues because he, unlike YWH, likes being on the bottom but he also associates that with sleeping with JFR so yeah - kinda a mess though it’s clear there they just need a bunch of time but slowly and surely it will come around.)
Anyway, I LOVE THIS STORY POINT SO MUCH!!!
Also, Song Qingshi didn’t rescue BZH but he sort of did. Because he rescued YWH and YWH rescued BZH.

Okay but wwx slutting it up after the war ends and he goes back to LP, fucks off to the BM and then fucking dies and like two months later a woman walks into LP with a tiny orphaned kid who's clinging to his aunts leg and he looks up and gives jc the biggest smile ever, his eyes lighting up the same way his brothers did and oh fuck no. So any way jc keeps him, names him zihao and raises TWO of his siblings kids. And when lwj drops the sizhui bomb he's just like now wait a fucking minute
ooh, i love the potential for jc feels if he had a kid of wwx's to raise after his death! he's already so conflicted about hating and missing his dead brother, but at least he doesn't really have to grapple with that in public; in public he can just play up the hatred part and let the other stuff fester internally. but if there were a kid on the line? he would see wwx in this kid every day and it would make him love them and then hate himself for loving that particular facet of them and then worry that the kid was picking up on it. given his childhood complexes i can guarantee that he would spend a lot of his emotional energy worrying about whether he was treating this kid fairly despite the complicated feelings he had for the kid's parent, and he'd probably overcorrect, and then he'd worry that he wasn't being fair to jin ling, so he'd love both of them even harder.
and he'd also probably worry a lot about the kid turning out like wwx - because jc still doesn't actually know what motivated wwx's sudden and seemingly inexplicable turn to dark magic and breaking his promises and abandoning jc etc.! maybe it's genetic!! jc would be even more sad than parents usually are when their kids get too old to be carried or to want to be tucked in and read bedtime stories. he'd be like, "and so it begins. the child will be running away from home any day now. only a matter of time." and he'd be very insecure about the kid going to the cloud recesses lectures at age 15 because that's where he started to lose wwx :(
of course publicly he wouldn't tell anyone this kid's actual origins, so he'd also have to make up a story about whose kid this is. i guess he'd have to claim that they were his own illegitimate child? lwj gets away with the handwavey "a-yuan is my son, don't ask how it happened, it's not important" because none of the lans have ever taken sex ed, but jc would have to do better than that. he'd also have to lie to the kid about it, probably, because they'd have grown up hearing about wwx and what a shit dude he was and how much jc hated him.
i also wonder how much this would change jc's actions towards wwx right after he comes back to life. like, he's not only a vowbreaking sororicidal brother-abandoner, he's ALSO a deadbeat dad?? unacceptable. he is coming back to lotus pier if i have to carry him AND his donkey on my back the entire way, so help me god.
when he finds out about sizhui, his first reaction is that wei wuxian is the jin guangshan of lotus pier, apparently, COME TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ALL YOUR LOVE CHILDREN, YOU WOMANIZER!!!! his second reaction would be overwhelming rage at lwj for keeping a nephew from him for all these years. and the reactions after that we need not discuss. let’s leave the man his dignity and let him cry his happy tears in peace.

It's very sad and violent in some parts, sorry.
"Balance! Balance is key Shuyang," Jeongin sighed while coming behind the boy and helping him plant his feet. Shuyang looked at him in slight confusion before one of the other young boys translated in chinese. Jeongin was given the difficult task of teaching these boys no older than fifteen and no younger than twelve how to shoot a bow and arrow. Smiling to myself I was beyond proud of Jeongin for not only strengthening his shooting skills but for being able to teach as well.
"Hyung have you not noticed how clumsy he is? I'm surprised we didnt put him in farming with Yeji," Hanyu chuckled as he shot and nearly hit the bullseye. "Stop being mean," Zihao groaned in english. Pulling myself to my feet I took over Jeongin's place behind Shuyang and placed my hands over his. "Slow your breathing," I said in his home language, "it's okay to miss. You are learning so breathe. Now balance and focus on your breathing."
"You know chinese," Jeongin gasped. "And english," I said while looking over at Zihao, "dad moved us around alot since he was a company translator. Does it really shock you? I lived in Taiyuan for five years, Texas for six, and Busan for eight years now. Korean is relatively my newest language."
"Hey I'm from Taiyuan," Xinlong said excitedly. Giving him a wide smile I turned my attention back to Shuyang and whispered for him to release the arrow, watching as his arrow finally landed on the rim of the target. "There you go," I encouraged, "now keep practicing."
As time went on, and corrections decreased, I had decided to leave the boys for a moment to survey the base. It wasn't as broken down as the infected towns but it surely needed repairs. The houses were run down and in a few years probably dilapidated but for now it was livable and somewhat warm. The shops we kept around were always busy with people making food, clothes, weapons, and more. Children were running around the property with no parents to corral them inside, only a few of us teenagers and early adults taking over the parental life.
"Y/N I thought you were with Jeongin," Seungmin asked while running up to me from the pig barn. He was wiping the dirt from his hands with a rag in his pocket and tried to clear his face but with little result. "I thought you were supposed to control the pigs. Looks like it was the other way around." Giving me an off smile he lowered his face and groaned, "younger sow has been testing Jisung and I's patience. It's too hyper to be cooped up in the barn but too lazy to burn energy when in the field and it's hard to catch it when I need it. Somehow it managed to learn to open it's own pen so I had to get Changbin to help me rebuild the door to move the latch."
His small smile made my heart swell, I rarely saw him smile during our time together so it's refreshing to see happiness in the same boys I worried about months ago. "I'm obviously not a builder," he added after holding out his cut up hands, "gonna have to borrow some of Hyunjin's bandages." "Need help?"
****
"I missed the way you patched us up. Its alot more comfortable than Hyung's tight and rigid tactic." Finishing up the last wrap I gave his hand a soft squeeze before putting the medical supplies back to its spots. "Had to learn somehow with Namjoon always managing to injure himself. I still cant figure out how he would do it but he always had new injuries each week! Mom was always finding small jobs to do so she was gone alot while dad was always at the companies he was doing work for. He tried to patch himself up but would always hurt himself more," I laughed, "I wonder if he found someone to replace my handiwork."
The room was silent for a moment but my smile never faltered. "I'm sure he's fine," I added, "I'm sure he is running around with Jungkook or Seokjin. They had a big group of friends apparently. I didnt get to see them often since he was scared I would fall for Jungkook but I think he was overreacting. Big brother stuff you know?" "I understand completely. My older sister was the same way with her friends. But she was more worried because I was a bit of a wild child in her eyes. She thought I would corrupt her friends." The room filled with laughter as we thought back to our pasts. Thinking about it now I never would have believed someone like Seungmin would be my friend. In high school I was always shy and a bit of a book nerd but wasn't afraid to stand up for myself. I guess that's how I meshed well with Jeongin when I moved to Korea, attending high school with him. Apparently Hyunjin went there too but I never really got to know him and didnt even know of his existence!
As we sat here I realized just how lucky I am to have met my boys. They helped me learn to grow a backbone and how important it was to not judge a book by his cover. "Well I better get back to the pins. I heard that Chan is going to take some of the men and younger males for hunting practice. You going," Seungmin sighed as he got up. "No I'm going to stay here and let my shoulder rest some more." "Right. But hey, thanks for patching me up."
**** Three years ago****
A loud crash erupted from the living room followed by an "Oh shit!" Glancing over at Jin who came and helped me make dinner tonight I wiped my hands on the apron he gave to me and followed the sound to see my brother trying to pick up the pieces of the now broken vase.
"Why does mom demand we keep glass items in this house," he growled before he cut open his hand yet again. "No Joon get the broom," I laughed. I quickly pulled him up to his feet and examined his hand to see a few thin lines here and there but nothing a few bandages couldnt cover. "You're a god of destruction," I giggled to myself before letting go of him and moving to get the broom,"dont move Joon! You'll break something else with your luck!"
"How is it that he is the older brother but you are the one who takes care of him," Seokjin laughed. "I swear the birth year on my birth and adoption certificates are wrong. I have to be older than him." "What will he do without you in a few years?" "I'll be fine!"
****
I always wondered where he went. Did he make it out of our town alive? Did he find the boys? I might never get answers.
A few hours later and I was huddled in my room by the fireplace, waiting for the boys to get back. Chan and Jeongin were out teaching the younger boys to hunt which was freaky in it's own sense but it was also scary that it was starting to get dark. "Y/N," Shuyang called while rushing in. "I thought you were hunting! What's wrong," I asked. Going over to him and rubbing his heaving back I could barely hear him huffed out "need translator. Felix cant understand. A man is here!"
****
"救命啊," I heard a young man scream as I raced up the staircase. "I dont speak chinese! Do you speak anything else? What group are you from," Felix yelled. "Hyung yelling isnt going to help. It's like when we did that when you were learning korean," Seungmin sighed. "Shut up! I dont see you helping! And where the hell is Shuyang?" Shoving the door open I walked in front of Shuyang and took a look at the situation. Seungmin was sitting in the back corner with his hands in his face, Felix was standing firm but with panic laced on his, and the boy who must have been the man screaming in chinese moments ago was pacing the room.
"My name is Y/N. I speak chinese well. Are you okay," I asked while slowly approaching the frantic man. " His eyes grew wide and he let out a "oh my god! I can speak a little korean but the words arent coming to me right now! My base has been invaded and we need help! I'm from Amber's section!" "Amber? Amber Liu," Felix asked after finally catching on. "They're invaded."
****
We filled the trucks with as many members as we could as we raced to the compound. In my truck we had Felix, Changbin, Minho, Jisung, Lucas, and I. The ride was quiet aside from the engine roaring as Minho raced us through the winding roads. "Please let there be survivors," Lucas whispered to himself, "let my friends be okay." Placing my hand ontop of his I tried to comfort him in any way I could but with little results. "How did this happen," Felix asked which I ended up having to translate. In the best korean he could manage in the moment he said "people were coming back from hunting and one was bitten while he was out. He didnt tell anyone and turned. It spread from there. Oh God Winwin!" Tears rolled down his face and he pulled his sleeves to his eyes to try to stop them.
"Its okay to cry," I hushed, "we are going to help the best we can I promise." Jisung eyed me as I comforted the stranger, knowing my heart was breaking for him. Placing his hand on his back, I could tell Jisung was trying to help too. We both knew what it was like to lose someone to this situation. When we first found eachother he had his older brother with him who got bit saving Jisung. I on the other hand had to shoot my mother when she turned and soon after my father. It's a pain that many in this world are forced to go through but it never gets easier. We all hope for a day this will end but at this point we know the odds are out of our favor.
"We're here," Minho interrupted before we all rushed out of the trucks and others pulled in. With a team of an estimated thirty we raced into the compound and began to shoot every Walker in sight. I stuck close to Lucas and Felix as we tried to find and gather survivors but only managed to find a small group hiding in a closed off room in the leadership tower. "Ten! Amber," Lucas cried as he rushed into the room. Doing a headcount I was able to see five survivors and then Lucas, my heart dropping at the alarming number. "We couldnt stop them," Amber shook, "I just had to find survivors and barricade ourselves until help arrived."
"We're here," Felix comforted, "now come on. We need to get you guys to a vehicle while we search for more." "I'll keep looking. I have great aim and can protect myself," I suggested. Nodding his head, Felix ushered everyone out while I raced around the entire compound. The bodies laying on the floor added to my fear and I prayed for atleast one more survivor. "Please! Anyone!" On the ground was a young male with a Walker ontop of him, snapping at his face. Pulling my arrow back I was able to nail him right in the back of his head and ran to help the young man.
He had to be close to Jeongin's age but definitely a giant in comparison. His eyes were soft but full of fear but I had to push my own aside to try to soothe him in this moment. "Are you infected," I asked. Shaking his head I immediately pulled him to his feet and handed him a gun from my bag and continued through the compound. After nearly an hour though and no other survivors in sight I knew it was time to leave.
"But Chenle! I cant leave him!" "Someone else might have found him. We have to go," I ordered before pulling him by his arm to the trucks that were already packed and preparing to leave. "Is that all of our team," Felix yelled through the crowd. "We are all clear sir," another called out. Helping the boy into the bed of the truck I crawled in to sit by him and the new members of our base, listening to the cries of pain as they went through their list of friends who were either infected or killed.
"Johnny," one asked. "Got bit. I watched someone shoot him soon after. Same for Mark." "Chenle?" "Infected." My heart went out to this group. These were their friends, their family, and they had to watch some of them die today. "I'm sorry I didnt get help soon enough," Lucas apologized. Amber placed her hand on his face and made him look at her, "you saved us Lucas. You cant save everyone but you saved someone! You did great." "Its not your fault," another girl added, "this wasn't something we could have stopped. Its life now."
Life sucks.
