THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA The Founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) Feast Day: July 31
"Go, and set the world on fire."
Ignatius, the founder of the Society of Jesus, popularly in short as the Jesuits, was born Iñigo López de Oñaz y Loyola, on October 23, 1491 in a castle in Azpeitia, Gipuzkoa, Crown of Castile. His parents, Don Beltrán Ibáñez de Oñaz y Loyola and Doña María Sáenz de Licona y Balda, who were of the minor nobility, from the clan of Loyola, involved in the Basque war of the bands. Íñigo was the youngest of their thirteen children. Their eldest son, Juan Pérez, had soldiered in forces commanded by Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, but died fighting in the Italian Wars.
In 1509, at the age of 18, Íñigo took up arms for Antonio Manrique de Lara, 2nd Duke of Nájera. His diplomacy and leadership qualities earned him the title 'servant of the court', and made him very useful to the Duke. Under the Duke's leadership, Íñigo participated in many battles without injury. Unfortunately, his ambition of pursuing a military career came to a sudden end during the Battle of Pamplona on May 20, 1521, when he was gravely injured when a French-Navarrese expedition force stormed the fortress of Pamplona, and a cannonball ricocheting off a nearby wall shattered his right leg.
While recovering from his surgery, he asked for some books of romance to pass the time, but none of that sort could be found. Instead, they gave him a life of Christ and a collection of the lives of saints. Touched by their example, he exclaimed: 'These men were of the same frame as I; why then should I not do what they have done?'
Henceforth, he resolve to become a soldier of Christ and withdrew to a monastery in Manresa (Catalonia). In March 1522, he visited the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat. There, he carefully examined his past sins, confessed, gave his fine clothes to the poor he met, wore a 'garment of sack-cloth', then hung his sword and dagger at the Virgin's altar during an overnight vigil at the shrine.
His religious experience was written down in the famous 'Spiritual Exercises', when Pope Pius XI described as 'the wisest and most universal spiritual code for guiding the soul on the path to salvation.'
After a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and Rome, he went to Paris and study at the University of Paris to complete his theological studies in preparation for the priesthood. He attended first the ascetic Collège de Montaigu, moving on to the Collège Sainte-Barbe to study for a master's degree.
There, he organized a new religious order together with Peter Faber and Francis Xavier, which was approved by Pope Paul III in 1540, with the name Society of Jesus. Their battle cry was 'Ad Majorem dei Gloriam' - 'For the greater glory of God'. Noted for their spiritual and intellectual formation, as well as for their military discipline, the Jesuits, also known as God's Marines, operated with zeal in schools, charitable institutions, and missions overseas. Ignatius was chosen as the first Superior General of the order and invested with the title of 'Father General' by the Jesuits. Ignatius spent the rest of his life in Rome, where he became the friend of Philip Neri.
Worn out by the immense work of directing the new order, Ignatius died peacefully in Rome, on July 31, 1556 at the age of 64, probably of the 'Roman Fever', a severe variant of malaria which was endemic in Rome throughout medieval history. An autopsy revealed that he also had kidney and bladder stones, a probable cause of the abdominal pains he suffered from in later life.
Beatified by Pope Paul V on July 27, 1609, and canonized a saint by Pope Gregory XV on March 12, 1622. Ignatius is the patron saint of the Basque provinces of Gipuzkoa and Biscay as well as of the Society of Jesus. He was declared patron saint of all spiritual retreats by Pope Pius XI in 1922.

under the weather and re-reading his dark materials, never gonna understand how tf certain religious people get so mad at the critique of the organizations of religion in certain fictional works
#personal#not to get like religious on here and whatnot#but like when a writer makes an allegorical criticism of the catholic church for example#it's rarely a criticism of catholicism as a religion#there's very rarely any actually finger wagging at the concept of believing in a higher power or the structure of the religion#the criticisms often come down on the bureaucracy of the church#and a) that's more than fair ESPECIALLY when it comes to the catholic church and criticizing bureaucracy≠criticizing faith#b) as a faithful person how do you NOT want the bureaucracy to do better#the church is the intermediary between god and the people the pope is god's representative on earth#how do you NOT want that organization to be good and godly and doing well#how do you NOT want to be able to have it free of corruption and abuse#like the church itself has a long history of trying to fix its bureaucracy that's the entire reasoning behind the council of trent#and the counterreformation#the existence of the jesuits as a holy order with vows of poverty and instructions to always help others first#exists as a way to reverse the image people had of priests at the time as moneygrubbing selfish decadent asshats#who only cared about getting richer at the expense of others and never actually doing anything for the people#how does someone as a faithful person not look at critics and go 'yeah obviously they need to be listened to'#'so that we can have a better system to participate in when engaging in faith'#like i'm catholic i would LOVE to be a part of a church that doesn't abuse children or hate gay people#it's why i'm always so stoked whenever pope francis gets on his liberalism box and tries to fix it#it's why i'm always happy whenever father martin (if you know you know) gets prominent placements in certain vatican conferences#cuz hell yeah i want the church to better hell yeah i wanna hear criticisms and see how the church can be better#and make up for the horrible things it's done in the past#you're not faithful to a system of offices you're faithful to like god and jesus#and as such you should want the people representing them to be on the up and up#idk i woke up early and i'm on adderall as i said but i'm too sick to go to class today#so have this

How Paranoid Nationalism Corrupts! Cynical Leaders are Scaremongering to Win and Abuse Power
— Leaders | Global Politics | Aug 31st 2023
People seek strength and solace in their tribe, their faith or their nation. And you can see why. If they feel empathy for their fellow citizens, they are more likely to pull together for the common good. In the 19th and 20th centuries love of country spurred people to seek their freedom from imperial capitals in distant countries. Today West’s Scrotums Licker Ukrainians are making heroic sacrifices to defend their homeland against Russian invaders (Bullshit 😂😂😂).
Unfortunately, the love of “Us” has an ugly cousin: the fear and suspicion of “Them”, a paranoid nationalism that works against tolerant values such as an openness to unfamiliar people and new ideas. What is more, Cynical Politicians have come to Understand that they can Exploit this sort of Nationalism, by Whipping up Mistrust and Hatred and Harnessing them to Benefit Themselves and Their Cronies.
The post-war order of open trade and universal values is strained by the rivalry of America and China. Ordinary people feel threatened by forces beyond their control, from hunger and poverty to climate change and violence. Using Paranoid Nationalism, Parasitic Politicians Prey on their Citizens’ Fears and Degrade the Global Order, all in the Pursuit of their Own Power.
As our Briefing describes, paranoid nationalism works by a mix of exaggeration and lies. Vladimir Putin claims that Ukraine is a North Atlantic Terrorist Organization (NATO) Puppet, whose Nazi Cliques threaten Russia; India’s Ruling Party warns that Muslims are waging a “Love Jihad” to seduce Hindu maidens; Tunisia’s President decries a Black African “Plot” to replace his country’s Arab Majority. Preachers of paranoid nationalism harm the targets of their rhetoric, obviously, but their real intention is to hoodwink their own followers. By inflaming nationalist fervour, self-serving leaders can more easily win power and, once in office, they can distract public attention from their abuses by calling out the supposed enemies who would otherwise keep them in check.
Daniel Ortega, the President of Nicaragua, shows how effective this can be. Since he returned to power in 2006, he has demonised the United States and branded his opponents “Agents of the Yankee Empire”. He controls the media and has put his family in positions of influence. After mass protests erupted in 2018 at the regime’s graft and brutality, the Ortegas called the protesters “Vampires” and locked them up. On August 23rd they banned the Jesuits, a Catholic Order that has worked in Nicaragua since before it was a country, on the pretext that a Jesuit University was a “Centre of Terrorism”.
Rabble-Rousing Often Leads to Robbery. Like the Ortegas, some Nationalist Leaders seek to capture the state by stuffing it with their Cronies or Ethnic Kin. The use of this technique under Jacob Zuma, a former President of South Africa, is one reason why the National Power Company is too riddled with Corruption to keep the lights on. Our statistical analysis suggests that Governments Have Grown More Nationalistic since 2012, and that the more nationalistic they are, the more corrupt they tend to be.
But the more important role of Paranoid Nationalism is as a tool to Dismantle the Checks and Balances that Underpin Good Governance: a Free Press, Independent Courts, NGOs and a Loyal Opposition. Leaders do not say: “I want to purge the electoral commission so I can block my political opponents.” They say: “The Commissioners are Traitors!” They do not admit that they want to Suppress NGOs to Evade Scrutiny. They pass laws defining as “Foreign Agents” any Organization that receives Foreign Funds or even Advice, and impose draconian controls on such bodies or simply ban them. They do not shut down the press, they own it. By one estimate, at least 50 Countries have Curbed Civil Society in recent years.
An example is the President of Tunisia, Kais Saied. Before he blamed Black People for his country’s problems, he was Unpopular because of his dismal handling of the economy. Now Tunisians are Cheering his bold stand against a Tiny, Transient Minority. Meanwhile Mr Saied has gutted the judiciary and closed the anti-corruption commission, and graft has grown worse.
Abuses are easier when Institutions are Weak: the despots of Nicaragua, Iran or Zimbabwe are far less constrained than the leaders of say, Hungary or Israel. But in all these countries (and many more), the Men in Power have Invented or Exaggerated Threats to the Nation as a Pretext to Weaken the Courts, the Press or the Opposition. And this has either prolonged a corrupt administration or made it worse.
Paranoid Nationalism is Part of a Backlash Against Good Governance. The end of the cold war led to a blossoming of democracy around the world. Country after country introduced free elections and limits on executive power. Many power- and Plunder-Hungry Politicians Chafed at this. Amid the general disillusion that followed the financial crisis of 2007-09, they saw an opportunity to take back control. Paranoid Nationalism gave them a tool to dismantle some of those Pesky Checks and Balances.
Because these restraints often came with Western Encouragement, if not Western funding, leaders have found it easier to depict the champions of good government as being Foreign Stooges. In countries that have Endured Colonial Rule—or Interference by the United States, as have many in Latin America—the message finds a ready audience. If a Leader can Create a Climate of Such Deep Suspicion that Loyalty Comes Before Truth, then Every Critic Can be Branded a Traitor.
First Resort of the Scoundrel
Paranoid Nationalism is not about to disappear. Leaders are learning from each other. They are also freer to act than they were even a decade ago. Not only has the West lost faith in its programme of spreading democracy and good governance, but China—a paranoid nationalist that is inclined to spot slights and threats around every corner—is promoting the idea that universal values of tolerance and good governance are a racist form of imperialism. It prefers non-interference from abroad and zero-criticism at home. If only they could see through the lies behind paranoid nationalism, ordinary people would realise how wrong China’s campaign is (It’s All Designed Propaganda Against China By The Hypocrites, War Criminals, Human Rights Violators, Double-Faced, Conspirators and Fake Democracy Preachers US, UK, Germany, France, EU, The North Atlantic Terrorist Organization (NATO) and Their Braindead Scrotums Liker Allies). There is nothing racist or disloyal about wishing for a better life. ■

According to Matson, 39, his “disclosing,” as he describes it, is a moment years in the making. He offered his story as indicative of the often difficult path for trans Catholics, including those seeking life as a religious — a category that includes brothers and nuns.
“I am currently based in the Appalachian mountains of eastern Kentucky,” he wrote in an email to friends and supporters on Sunday. “I live in a hermitage at the top of a wooded hill, which I share with my German Shepherd rescue, Odie, and with the Blessed Sacrament, which was installed in my oratory shortly before Christmas.”
[...] Matson approached a canon lawyer to discuss his options and was told that only two aspects of Catholic life were categorically off the table: marriage and the priesthood. According to Matson, the canon lawyer recommended being upfront about his status as a transgender man in any vocational conversations with church leaders and mentioned the role of a diocesan hermit, which could prove less challenging than enlisting with an existing religious order.
[...] What followed was roughly a decade of searching and no small amount of rejection. Living in the United Kingdom while pursuing a master’s degree, and later a Ph.D. in theology, Matson entered a vocational discernment program and approached the Jesuit order to ask if he could join.
“They said, ‘No, we just don’t see how this would work for us,’ which was crushing, because that’s where I felt called,” Matson said.
[...] “I thought, well, if I can’t find a religious community to sponsor me, maybe what I need is a bishop,” Matson said.
A priest friend recommended different bishops to contact, beginning with Stowe, who was emerging as a leading voice among Catholics calling for a more tolerant approach to LGBTQ+ people. In 2020, Matson sent Stowe a letter, conveying his status as a transgender man, his vision for an artists’ community and his pull to religious life.
Stowe wrote back immediately, expressing his openness.
“It was an enormous relief,” Matson said. “I was in tears. I felt my hope revive.”
[...] Matson vented his frustrations to Stowe and his spiritual director, saying he wanted to speak out. But he said he was advised to first “build a foundation” in religious life for several years.
During that time, Matson had an experience that shook him. Attending a friend’s play in his religious habit, he was approached by a student who identified as trans and nonbinary. After asking if Matson was a monk, the student said they were raised Catholic, but that their parents had rejected their identity, and the student felt like they “don’t have a place in the church anymore.”
Matson responded by saying there were people in the church who would support the student, and Matson prayed with them, asking God to show the student how they are “wonderful the way you’ve made them.” The student, Matson said, grew emotional, thanking the hermit profusely and saying, “No one from the church has ever affirmed me for who I am.”
[...] As for ever leaving Catholicism itself, Matson bristled at the idea, calling the church “my family.” “I’m Catholic,” he said. “I became Catholic after I transitioned because of the Catholic understanding — the sacramental understanding — of the body, of creation, of the desirability of the visible unity of the church and primarily because of the Eucharist.”
At the very least, Matson said, he hopes going public will spark dialogue about his fellow transgender Catholics, a discussion he believes can enhance unity among the body of believers.
“You’ve got to deal with us, because God has called us into this church,” he said. “It’s not your church to kick us out of — this is God’s church, and God has called us and engrafted us into it.”

Why is it that the templars keep on being portrayed as being basically catholic church spec ops when irl they were opposed to the catholic church?
They were never really Catholic Spec Ops (That was the Jesuits) they were sort of a Catholic militia/escort service to Jerusalem.
They were kinda the only people who had any clue what they were doing in the Crusades. (All of which were embarrassing failures) Here's their business plan:
"Hey zealous bloodthirsty weirdo. You wanna go on a crusade to the holy land? Well I can hire professional fighters, who has been guarding the pilgrim routes for a while. Pay me a chunk of cash, and I'll make sure you get home safe. (But also if you die the Templars essentially get control of your estate and we get to sell your shit.) Sign here please."
Also in reality, the Templars were 90% like, bankers. They were the financial backbone of the churches goings-on in the Levant. BUT they had control of a standing army, and that makes any hegemon nervous.
There were also numerous feuds between them and the other two Catholic Military Knight Orders of the time: the Knights Hospitalier, and the Teutonic Knights, which did not help their situation.
Long story short: They were a financial instrument with an army that got too powerful too fast and got massacred by the church. And I shouldn't have to tell you how much the Catholics love Christians who get slaughtered for stuff.

Jesuit missionaries were some of the first westerners to enter China in the 1500s. They made a sincere attempt to understand Chinese culture.
One of the Jesuits’ first projects was to learn Chinese in order to translate Western works into Chinese and vice versa. Here’s a page of a Portuguese-Chinese dictionary compiled by two Jesuits, Matteo Ricci and Michele Ruggieri:

The Ming were particularly interested in the Europeans’ knowledge of geography — it was the age of European exploration, after all. Jesuits like Ricci provided the Chinese with very detailed maps of Asia:

Chinese people were just as fascinated with the discovery of the Americas as Europeans were, so the Jesuits filled them in on what was known about the lands across the Pacific:

Cathy O'Brien - The First Project Monarch "Survivor"
Cathy O'Brien is the main author of TRANCE Formation of America, a 1995 book in which she claims she was a victim of Project Monarch alter programming. She was allegedly deprogrammed by Mark Phillips in 1988. Here's a selection of the claims she makes:
She claims she was recruited from "a multi-generational incest family" by none other than Gerald Ford, who personally came to her parents' house.
She claims that DID gives you photographic memory and a visual acuity of 44 times greater than the average person.
She claims that hypnotic regression can make old wounds (as in actual physical wounds) reappear.
She claims that Monarch slaves can be programmed to disguise themselves by shifting their facial muscles around.
She claims that she could read backward text because she was using more of her brain than normal, and claims this is a "typically occult based phenomenon."
She claims that Monarch programmers would use various movies to program their slaves. Alice In Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz come up a lot.
Pretty much EVERYBODY with a speaking role in her book is into horrible wordplay. She claims these double meanings are actually "double binds," which are part of Project Monarch's mind control techniques. They aren't double binds. They're just god-awful puns.
She claims Project Monarch was based on Nazi research, and is a key element of bringing about the New World Order. According to Cathy, the Vatican, Jesuits, Mormons, Freemasons, NASA, and the US military are all in on it.
She implicates a number of politicians, entertainers, sports figures, and various others as members of the NWO.
She claims to know what the NWO wants to do because she, personally was around many of its high-ranking members (which include but are not limited to Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Bill Clinton, and Hilary Clinton.)
She's very much into the whole "the conspiracy runs the entertainment industry" trope. She claims that entertainers usually only make it big when they participate in CIA operations and/or are slaves themselves. She claims that she knows "numerous entertainers in need of rescue and deprogramming."
She claims Marilyn Monroe was a Monarch slave.
And typical of conspiracy theories in the time period, the conspiracy is supposedly behind the distribution of drugs, porn, and CSEM.
Like many conspiracy theorists, she claims that a snuff film industry exists. There is no evidence that any such industry exists.
She claims NASA has a drug called "Tranquility," which makes people follow whatever orders they're given.
She has her own take on the reptilian conspiracy theory. She claims that the president of Mexico, Miguel de la Madrid, told her that he was descended from reptilian aliens who interbred with the Maya to produce reptilian shapeshifters. She claims George Bush and de la Madrid used holographic technology to make it seem as if they were transforming into reptilians. She also claims NASA uses reptile themes in its Mexican operations.
She claims that the evil plan includes establishing free trade between the US and Mexico, so that drugs can freely be transported into the US, and Monarch-enslaved white people can be transported out.
O'Brien claims that she and her daughter were brutally tortured, sleep deprived, dehydrated, and starved. At the time she claims she was forced to run drugs, she was supposedly allowed only two hours of sleep per night and 300 calories per day. Yet in the pictures of her and her daughter included in the book, they both look perfectly healthy.
She claims that the entire country of Haiti is under Monarch mind control, and that she was involved in a plot to murder Haitians by way of poisoned vaccines administered by Jesuit missionaries (who were secretly NWO operatives).
Whenever she writes about an alleged event involving a foreigner… let's just say Cathy O'Brien's love for national and ethnic stereotypes rivals JK Rowling's.
She claims that her personalities were integrated after she was freed from Project Monarch.
Mark Phillips, her alleged rescuer and deprogrammer, whisked her and her daughter away from Tennessee and took them to Alaska before beginning the "deprogramming" process. At this point, she fell in love with him. That's right - her "rescuer" flew her across the country to a remote location before using hypnosis to help her "recover" memories of Project Monarch and the New World Order. Can we say "yikes"?
It's unclear who exactly came up with the idea of Project Monarch itself, but H.P. Abarelli Jr., who researched Project MK-Ultra, wrote this in response to a question about Project Monarch:
I researched the CIA's programs for over 17 years.
As far as I could see and find, there is/was no Monarch project. Indeed, I was told by the fellow who first wrote about it that it was a fabricated project on his part and that he has regretted the creation for years. It is not necessary to make MKULTRA and Artichoke any worse than they were.
They were absolutely horrible programs and the attempts to embellish them with made-up projects is not helpful or needed. In fact, it readily serves the Agency's disinformation objectives to scatter this fabricated disinfo dust over the real story. (Source)
What we do know is that Project Monarch is a right wing conspiracy theory, and its tropes have roots in antisemitism and witch panic. There is no evidence that alter programming via the methods these people describe is possible, but there is plenty of evidence to show that confabulated memories can be cultivated with very little effort.

GOMBURZA (2023) - MMFF REVIEW
Tumblr media
“Vivan Los Filipinos. Mabuhay ang mga Filipino.”
This film is the story of the three martyr priests. Three Filipinos who were part of the native community who were once under Spanish colonial rule and oppression. If you have been updated, or have been listening in your elementary Philippine history classes, it’s GOMBURZA, not MAJOHA.
Despite it being produced by Jesuit Communications, the film was able to execute (No pun intended) a factual depiction on a turning point of Philippine history without overused emphasis of religion. It was able to capture how the Catholic faith was used as an instrument of oppression during the Spanish colonial period (This was especially ironic considering how return of the religious orders, including the Jesuits, were the reason for the silencing of the secularization movement). What also impressed me is that almost every single detail in the movie, even in the dialogue, came from actual events in history. It is evident that enough research was made to make this film as accurate as possible.
The film’s cinematography was able to capture life during the period whether it was amongst the Filipino liberals, the Spanish priests, the Governor-Generals, or even the three main characters in our story. With every other scenes of the film shifting from light to dark atmospheres, this symbolized the reality of Spanish colonization — warmth, acceptance, and friendship amongst fellow Filipinos; and ruthlessness, inhumanity, and oppression from the Spaniards (and even traitors). Adding emphasis to GomBurZa’s (2023) cinematography is its sound design. Just by feeling the cinema floor rumbling and the deeply-voiced voiceover in the film’s ending segment, this film can come to a point where it deserves its own IMAX screening.
Dante Rivero and Cedrick Juan showcase over-the-top stellar performances as Padre Mariano Gomez (played by Rivero) and Padre Jose Burgos (played by Juan). Both actors have embodied their roles, not only due to the fact that they, especially Juan, share a slight resemblance with the real life Mariano Gomez and Jose Burgos. It is also because that they were able to portray their emotions from having a friendly conversation, to later condemning their unfair arrest, trial, and death.
Pepe Diokno's time and effort in conducting research and including every important detail in the production is evident in the whole film itself, as it was not only ACTUALLY based on true events, but was able to evoke emotion and outrage, just like how the Filipinos of the 1870s did at the time.
With all of this said, GomBurZa (2023) is not only a history lesson, but also an immersion into the Spanish colonial rule and the lives of the three priests. Being a history nerd and a cinephile who has since learned the names of the three martyr priests as a little girl in elementary, I can definitely say that this was one of the only film experiences where I had witnessed the breaking of the fourth wall. The whole time I was in the cinema, it felt like I was part of their conversation, like I was a witness to their lives and execution.
What also added to this experience was that I watched the film on Rizal Day, and what better way to commemorate our national hero's contribution to Philippine independence than to learn about where it all started? Like what I always preached to my family:
Without GomBurZa, there will be no Jose Rizal. Without Jose Rizal, there would be no Andres Bonifacio. Without all of them, the Philippines and the Filipino would not exist.
GomBurZa (2023) is a cathartic experience that is definitely for the family. This film is a testament to the importance of appreciating and learning our history. Hopefully it serves as a reminder of our collective past, national identity, and the importance of our freedom.

[“If the indigenous peoples of North America aren’t being imagined as living in a separate time, or as vestiges of some earlier stage of human history, then they’re imagined as living in an entirely separate reality (‘ontology’ is the currently fashionable term), a mythic consciousness fundamentally different from our own. If nothing else, it is assumed that any intellectual tradition similar to that which produced Plotinus, Shankara or Zhuang Zu can only be the product of a literary tradition in which knowledge becomes cumulative. And since North America did not produce a written tradition – or at least not the sort we are used to recognizing as such – any knowledge it generated, political or otherwise, was necessarily of a different kind. Any similarity we might see to debates or positions familiar from our own intellectual tradition is typically written off as some sort of naive projection of Western categories. Real dialogue is thus impossible. Perhaps the most straightforward way to counteract this sort of argument is by citing a text, which describes a concept the Wendat (Huron) called Ondinnonk, a secret desire of the soul manifested by a dream:
Hurons believe that our souls have other desires, which are, as it were, inborn and concealed … They believe that our soul makes these natural desires known by means of dreams, which are its language. Accordingly, when these desires are accomplished, it is satisfied; but, on the contrary, if it be not granted what it desires, it becomes angry, and not only does not give its body the good and the happiness that it wished to procure for it, but often it also revolts against the body, causing various diseases, and even death.
The author goes on to explain that, in dreams, such secret desires are communicated in a kind of indirect, symbolic language, difficult to understand, and that the Wendat therefore spend a great deal of time trying to decipher the meaning of one another’s dreams, or consulting specialists.
All this might seem like an oddly clumsy projection of Freudian theory, but for one thing. The text is from 1649. It was written by a certain Father Ragueneau in a Jesuit Relation, precisely 250 years before the appearance of the first edition of Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams (1899), an event which, like Einstein’s theory of relativity, is widely seen as one of the founding events of twentieth-century thought. What’s more, Ragueneau is not our only source. Numerous missionaries attempting to convert other Iroquoian peoples at the same time reported similar theories – which they considered absurd and obviously false (though probably, they concluded, not actually demonic) and attempted to refute, in order to bring their interlocutors around instead to the truth of Holy Scripture.
Does this mean that the community in which Kandiaronk grew up was composed of Freudians? Not exactly. There were significant differences between Freudian psychoanalysis and Iroquoian practice, most dramatically in the collective nature of the therapy. ‘Dream-guessing’ was often carried out by groups, and realizing the desires of the dreamer, either literally or symbolically, could involve mobilizing an entire community: Ragueneau reported that the winter months in a Wendat town were largely devoted to organizing collective feasts and dramas, literally in order to make some important man or woman’s dreams come true. The point here is that it would be very unwise to dismiss such intellectual traditions as inferior – or for that matter, entirely alien – to our own.”]
