See this man?
Tumblr media
His name is Piero Angela.
Some say he's the italian David Attemborough.
I say David Attemborough is the british Piero Angela.
He's a journalist. Tv host. Science journalist. Jazz pianist.
He was born in Turin in 1928 and, it is worth noting, his father Carlo has been awarded the Medal of the "Righteous among the Nations".
Last year Piero Angela celebrated 70 years (don't know if you heard me right: 70 YEARS!!) of non-stop collaboration with italian national TV and radio broadcaster RAI. Hell, when he started working for RAI it was still a radio only broadcaster... tv didn't even exist in Italy yet.
He's been anchorman, reporter, war correspondent... but what's most famous for is QUARK.
Tumblr media
The scientific TV program that turned the air of Bach's Orchestral Suite no. 3 in D major into "The Quark Music"! That's right. No one in Italy knows what's the air of Bach's suite n.3 in D major is, but goddammit, everyone knows the "Quark Music"!
That's because the man himself, the program and its intro are such a huge part in the life of every italian, even of those who are not interested in science. Piero Angela and his angelic intro are one of the pillars of italian modern culture!
Proof to that, another pillar of italian culture, Topolino, celebrated Angela's 90th birthday in 2018 with a story, an interview and a very cool cover! Here's to you Peter Quarky:
Tumblr media
Why am I telling you all this?
Because Piero Angela passed away today, aged 93. But not before having written a really touching letter (like a boss!) thanking everyone who worked with him and all the common people who let him bring knowledge and science into their home with his very savoy care and kindness.
Right now for me is like loosing a very dear member of the family... you know, an odd granpa fixated with dinosaurs, planets and bacteria (I've still the complete collection of vhs he made on the dinosaurs and the one on the solar system) and I just wanted everyone to know about him, his impressive career and simply what a cool and kind person he was. A gentleman of old days.
To the stars, Piero... to the stars!
Piero Angela plays "As time goes by" in the program "Che Tempo Che Fa" in 2018.

Watch "Tony Bennett/Dave Brubeck - The White House Sessions, Live 1962" on YouTube
youtube
RIP, the last of his kind.
The Kennedy administration was so hip. They gave a Jazz concert at the base of the Washington Monument in August of 1962. (This was a couple of months before the Cuban Missle Crisis.) The Dave Brubeck Quartet was at its zenith of popularity with a 45 rpm single of Take Five from their Time Out album. Tony Bennett had made a perpetual hit for himself with I Left My Heart In San Francisco.
The Brubeck Quartet was on first. They opened with Take Five. Then Tony Bennett with the Ralph Sharon piano trio. He closed with, I Left My Heart In San Francisco.
The applause and calls of "ancore, ancore" produced an impromptu performance of Tony Bennett backed by the Dave Brubeck Trio. Here's proof of what great musicians can do. They had not rehearsed together. They had never performed together.
Someone in the government made sure it was recorded, but the tape was lost for decades in government storage. It was discovered about a decade ago and brought to the public on a CD by Columbia Records on their Legacy lable.
If you love Jazz, you owe it to yourself to become acquainted with what's available on this lable. They've reissued LP record albums with the original album artwork and liner notes. Over the years, many of us elderly have replaced our scratchy old LP albums with their reissues on CD.

There weren't too many wet days this past month; but every time the skies would roll out grey and dull, I'd listen to September In The Rain! I truly believe there is an Oscar Peterson song to fit any variation of my moods!

I'll always love you, and want you too. How much, you'll never know. Most of all, I miss you so, I'll always love you. I miss you so.
The first post on this blog will be for the king of 20th century pop music— Nat King Cole. Nat King Cole was the first and now longest-running jazz musician to hold a special place in my heart, since my great grandma was his biggest fan.
Nat King Cole exists in most memories as the singer to The Christmas Song (chestnuts roasting on an open fiiire), but less people know he's a pianist as well, even jazz musicians. When I show people his work with the Nat King Cole Trio, they ask me who the pianist is and I still get responses of surprise that they "didn't know he also played piano." I reply with "he was a pianist first and a singer second, too."
It's a shame, really. His gentle style of soloing moves me in ways that the most technically skilled pianists in the world couldn't achieve, just because of the emotion it can convey. His careful, floating comping makes a ballad so listenable, and he was so worthy of that recognition from the jazz community and from the general public.
At the same time, I understand why his voice *became* Nat King Cole. Listening to Nat King Cole makes you feel less alone, like you can so easily relate to what he's singing. His voice convinces me that what he's singing is true, even when he didn't personally experience whatever exactly he was singing about, and even if I haven't experienced what he's singing about. His voice feels like reassurance, like a nice cool pillow to rest your head on.

Mary Lou Williams is a jazz force to be reckoned with. She was a child prodigy and played to make ends meet in her family when she was as young as 6 years old. Mary Lou Williams became a professional at 15 years old.
This jazz pianist knows her craft and plays with confidence. I love her spiritual approach to jazz. She can use the blues or the stride style like Fats Waller. She was a composer, an arranger and collaborated with Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman. This friend of Dizzy Gillespie influenced great musicians such as Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk.
I would recommend “A Grand Night for Swinging” as an introduction of her groovy skills. But she has other great numbers. I personally love “Dat Dere” a Bobby Timmon’s composition. She takes it and makes it her own with ease. It has the rhythmic touch I love and a cool and melodic fingering at the same time.
She’s the Maestra that all jazz musicians of quality revere.
-----
