From bankers to politicians with money to burn. They all came to the Cotton Club.

SHE SWINGS WITH BLUE NOTES WRAPPED UP IN SATIN RIBBON. Catherine Russell started her career solo late in life, but she made her presence felt immediately. This singer was a background vocalist for a long time. She worked for David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon and many other famous singers. The native New Yorker’s first album “Cat” came out in 2006 and by 2014, she was the second best-selling female artist on several jazz charts.

Catherine Russell sings with the vintage quality of an old-school jazz singer. Every word is crystal clear, and she adds a touch of humor in some of her songs. Let’s take the song called “Aged and mellow”, that’s the way she likes her men, like her whiskey, according to her lyrics. The tempo is sharp and syncopated. In the album “Harlem on my mind” (2016), Catherine Russell has a song called “Swing! Brother, Swing!” with a furious trumpet. Her scat prowess keeps the song to a dancing mood.

She received a Grammy Award and was nominated twice. I love her sense of swing and her relaxed style. We are in presence of a real jazz artist.

Carmen McRae was a contemporary of Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald. She would avoid the media while on tour to concentrate on her shows. This may be the reason why we know Sarah and Ella better. This New York native was excellent. Pianist of exquisite dexterity, she decided to leave the keyboard for the microphone early in her career. This jazz singer had a beautiful voice that she controls perfectly, giving it the intonation she wants.

Her take on Take Five, by Dave Brubeck, is crafted. Skylark is another beautiful rendition. Ain’t misbehavin’ is revisited and she puts her signature on it. In an interview, Carmen McRae said: "Every word is very important to me. Lyrics come first, then the melody. The lyric of a song I might decide to sing must have something that I can convince you with. It's like an actress who selects a role that contains something she wants to portray." I admired her independence. Carmen McRae won many awards.

Dans une entrevue, Carmen McRae a dit : « Toutes les paroles sont importantes pour moi. Les paroles viennent d’abord, ensuite la mélodie. Les paroles d’une chanson que je pourrais chanter doivent avoir quelque chose que je peux utiliser pour vous convaincre. C’est comme une actrice qui choisit un rôle qu’elle veut interpréter. » Artiste magnifique dont j’admire l’indépendance.  Carmen McRae a obtenu de nombreux prix.

This is an iconic picture. These 3 doing a gig as a jazz trio at the Apollo Theater in NY in 1959 were recording the most popular jazz album in jazz history: Kind of blue (1959). I must add the contribution of Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Wynton Kelly and Cannonball Adderley.

Adderley introduced Jimmy Cobb to Miles. He said, "I know a drummer, he can read (he meant music), and he can replace Philly Joe Jones if he doesn't show". Paul Chambers (with the hat) improvised from the get go the bassline on "So what". The other musicians followed. Miles gave this band just sketches of scales and the melody lines. And they came up with a masterpiece. I love Wynton Kelly. His fingering deeply rooted in the blues shines on "Freddy freeloader". How do we write about a unique singer like Billie Holiday? Billie Holiday was a unique singer because of her deep and trumpet-like voice. Self-taught, she started to sing in Harlem. Her friend, the sax player Lester Young, called her “Lady Day” and it stuck. A special singer who bent her phrasing and favored slow tempos.

I love many of her songs but “These foolish things” is among the top. You can add, “I’ll be seeing you” and “Lover man”. She put a stamp on these songs. She is showing her vulnerability and loneliness. A daring artist who never back down in front of a challenge. She sang “Strange fruit” a loaded song about lynching in the South, knowing very well the trouble she brought to herself. The US government targeted her for most of her career but she sang it until the end. Drug and alcohol were part of her demise. Billie Holiday won 4 Grammys posthumously. She is unforgettable.

HAILEY TUCK AND HER ROMANTIC, SMOKY VOICE She looks like a lady who ventured out of the roaring twenties with a touch of 21st century flavour. Her name is Hailey Tuck, and her smoky, dreamy voice will conquer you. This jazz singer would add some ballads within her repertoire. I love the classic “Don’t think twice” (from the album Junk, 2014.) Her delightful voice says, “We never did too much talking anyway, don’t think twice, it’s all right”. Her delivery has the quality of a sensible soul who’s nursing a broken heart. I must mention her superb way of covering songs. It comes out better than the original. If you take “Cruel Summer”, a song by the pop band Bananarama, it becomes a classy melody on piano. Also, the singer transforms “What’s love got to do with it” by Tina Turner. She gives a beautiful rendition with the guitar, better than the first version. Hailey Tuck is definitely one of a kind.
