Today was my first iaido practice of the year and I was late. I think this is one point I want to improve this year: being late to the practice in Inuyama. I’m never late to any other practice unless there’s a reason (work, doctor, etc) but for some reason I’m often late to the Sunday practice.
No Dojo to visit while it's a holiday. So, watching football on the TV and getting a spot of personal training in, Hojo Undo with the Chi-ishi... Conditioning with equipment, in this case Chi-ishi, an asymmetric dumbell, is all part of Goju Ryu's 'in house' training systems.
Today’s practice was too cold. I had to bribe myself out of bed with McDonald’s breakfast it was so cold. There’s no heater or AC in the Inuyama Budokan. I didn’t wanna go. 🥶 But I’m glad I did. We had an excellent practice as usual. After warming up with ZNIR’s Toho no Bu, we worked on kata. We even got to Tsumeai no Kurai, which I haven’t done in a while. Thank you to everyone who showed up to practice.

I’m currently studying the Heihō kadensho, written by Yagyū Munenori in the 1632. As you know I have a deep love for Japanese martial arts, and even if my true partner-for-life is western medieval swordsmanship, the study of this arts always bring me more insights about the way of the sword. The history of the Yagyu’s is so deep and interesting, and it touches topics which only experienced swordsmen can really understand. One of this topics is related to the the father of Munenori, Yagyū Sekishūsai Taira-no-Munetoshi, and his confrontation with Kamiizumi Isenokami Nobutsuna and his Shinkage-Ryu school. The followers of this Shinkage Ryu seems to have been the very first swordsmen practicing sparring and “contact” techniques at that time, this was possible thanks to the Fukuro Shinai, a new training tool invented by (it seems) Kamiizumi himself. This made their style far more effective compared to the others of the time and influenced a lot the life of Sekishusai and of the Yagyu clan. Anyway, I will probably talk about this in a future video. #swordsman #sword #katana #wayofthewarrior #bushido #history #japan #japanesemartialarts #martialarts #swordsmanship #heiho #book #zen #warrior #samurai #theswordsmanofthedale (presso Borgosesia) https://www.instagram.com/p/B52YnUVq6aU/?igshid=5g7mzqzqz1rs
