Dropout Customization
Due to some questions about MC customization, I have decided to compile all the physical and personality aspects that are selectable about the Dropout.
A reminder that this is all subject to change and that new things may be added (or deleted). Feedback and ideas to further develop MC are encouraged.
Tumblr media
Main Ideas
Name Surname Nickname
Sex, Gender, Pronouns (it's possible to customise them), Breast/Pecs, Penis/Vagina (If MC is transgender, their transition takes place while they're away) Title (Ms. / Mr. / Mx.)
Virginity or lack thereof.
If MC is trans (when they realized about it [high school, middle school, college] and if they told their family // the ROs already know, as MC told Uma and J, and word spread).
Birthday which establishes the Dropout's age as either 21 or 22 depending on the season (Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter)
Major (Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Computer science, Law, Economics, Education (in relation to science/maths/etc), Mathematics, Physics, Psychology). The Dropout's Major affects flavor text. These options are the ones approved by the Dropout's parents, though it's possible for MC to express interest in other degrees/topics (music, art, English, anthropology, archeology, classical studies, history).
Reason behind dropping out (MC got kicked out (they were caught cheating) MC didn't get a high enough GPA and dropped out / MC never even wanted to go to college and ultimately decided they wanted out / MC didn't fit in (they were discriminated, lonely, etc) though they really liked college / MC originally liked their degree and college but gradually lost interest in the entire thing / MC never liked their degree and decided to drop out / Something specifically related to mental health (mainly anxiety) / Impostor's syndrome.) This affects flavor text.
2 Coping Mechanisms (Alcohol, Tobacco, Drugs, Sleeping around, Avoidance, Overspending, Humor, *Hobby (overworking self) [Anger, Fake/forced happiness, Sadness, Indifference].) Each coping mechanism opens a variable and a storyline. You can choose two, though choosing one related to emotional responses [between brackets] automatically blocks out the others.
2 Hobbies (Singing, playing an instrument, songwriting, creative writing, drawing, sketching, sculpting, acting, photography, soccer, football, swimming, basketball, gymnastics, boxing, judo, karate, taekwondo, kickboxing, going to the gym, cooking/baking, dancing [ballet, contemporary dance, modern], yoga.) This affects flavor text and scenes.
Job (Bartender [Wanda, Statler is also around often], Cashier [Statler], Columnist [J (+Kai if poly)], Caregiver [Kai], Waiter/Waitress [Uma (+Travis if poly)], Tutor [Travis]) Each job gives you more time with a certain RO, as well as unlocking a storyline.

Alright, babies. Here’s some life lessons I’ve learned from 2019 so far.
Here’s a little backstory: this year has been hell on wheels for me. I say that, and the year isn’t even remotely close to being over.
Everything that’s happened has been a series of extreme highs or extreme lows. Nothing in between. My brother got married to an amazing girl, I graduated high school, I got a job, my dog (and best friend of 11 years) died, and I ended several friendships this year, including some that I thought would last a lifetime, to people (or, more specifically, a person) that I still love with all my heart. It’s been absolutely exhausting.
I won’t even lie right now, I have absolutely experienced suicidal thoughts this year. I don’t even think my family knows the gist of it all, and I usually tell them most of everything. This night is especially rough. I can’t sleep, even though I desperately need it – I have a migraine and I’ve barely slept the night before. My dog passed this morning. At least I can truly say that I look like I belong to the Victorian age – my skin is super pale and I have large bags under my eyes. I truly look like I’m dying of tuberculosis. Yay me!
But I’ve learned a lot. Truly. And I want to share some of those things that I’ve learned.
First and foremost, the biggest advice I could ever give is this: do what you fucking love and don’t worry too much about it.
I say that, because I’m super nervous about my major – I’m planning on studying history, and I hope to become a writer someday, too. I come across many people who ask what the hell I’m going to do with that major. I come across many people who doubt that I’ll become published. What exactly is my plan for life?
I plan on teaching. I plan on helping people. I plan on being the kind of teacher that actually cares about students.
And let me tell you something – anything that brings joy is worth doing. It’s worth learning. It’s worth studying.
Why? Well, take this: I’ve been listening to a lot of music this year. One of the songs has these interesting little lines: “The world is full of poets, we don’t need anymore. The world is full of singers, we don’t need anymore. The world is full of lovers, we don’t need anymore.” It’s so, so wrong (which I think is the point of the song – it’s entirely ironic). You know what the world is truly full of? It’s full of people who have experienced heartache. It’s full of people who are mean to people in retail / customer service jobs. It’s full of people who take their sadness out on other people. It’s full of worry, of war, of hate, of intolerance, etc. It’s full of people who lost someone close to them. It’s full of problems.
The world is never full of poets, who inspire other people and give a voice to common human emotion. The world is never full of historians, who encourage people to keep going with the tales of other humans from the past. The world is never full of writers, who give people hope and characters to relate to. The world is never full of politicians, who want to truly change the world for the better. The world is never full of painters, who want to show the beauty and sorrow of the world. Even too many writers, artists, historians, filmmakers, activists, etc, are not enough for the world. We always need more, even if the job market doesn’t realize it.
Anything that brings light to the world is worth pursuing. I know it sounds idealistic, but creation will save you.
Don’t dive into the world unprepared. Don’t pursue a creative writing degree if you don’t have a plan of survival. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t pursue the degree. It just means that you need to have your life planned out, and options ready.
And now, another thing I learned, that is vaguely related:
Choose to be nice.
Please.
I feel like when people experience hardships, a lot of us become bitter. We see the world in a very negative way.
All my life, I’ve been called childish, or naive, or something along the lines of that. And very many times, people (even well-meaning people, even members of my own family unintentionally) have made me feel dumb for this, or made me feel like I haven’t experienced the so-called “real world.”
Let me tell you something about myself that may not be at all clear:
I am very, very bitter.
I joke that I’m like a grandma. It’s really funny, because people often assume I’m younger than I am. But many times, I truly feel like I’m a jaded old woman. I’ve been bullied in school before; I’ve had a friendship fall apart because I seemed “depressed”; I’ve had people who looked me in the eye, say “I love you,” and not mean it; I’ve seen friends fall into toxic relationships; I’ve talked people down from suicide; I’ve felt completely unlovable and undeserving of love; I’ve been friendless; I’ve had friends whose parents died unexpectedly, and other friends whose parents didn’t show them the love they deserved; I’ve heard people being incredibly cruel to homeless people; I’ve read countless articles on school shootings; I’ve seen and heard homophobia, transphobia, and racism.
Yes, I fucking know what the “real world” is like.
So, I suggest a lot of people stop using that phrase towards “naïve people.” We’re not stupid. We live on this planet, too.
And you know what the biggest act of rebellion is?
Kindness.
And let me tell you – I used to detest being called “nice.” I hated it when people called me that. I always wondered why they couldn’t call me anything else – smart, or funny, or interesting, for example. But now I know that “nice” is the greatest compliment of all.
Because niceness is not just a simple character trait. Niceness is not just a last-resort compliment.
Niceness is active rebellion against a world that easily turns people mean. Niceness is a trait that demonstrates self-confidence (because niceness towards yourself counts just as much as niceness towards others), and niceness is really freaking hard because of the level of self-reflection and awareness of others that is required.
Any idiot can be intelligent. I’ve been surrounded by smart people all my life. It’s no longer a value that I admire above everything else.
I admire people who have lived on this Earth enough to recognize the pain that we all go through, and who think, “enough is enough, I’m not bringing any more of that into anyone’s life.”
I don’t care for cynicism. Any idiot can be cynical. It’s quite easy, actually. Look at me now. I’m being cynical about being cynical. That’s how easy it is.
I think the sooner we remove the idea that being cynical and rude is the same thing as being insightful and intelligent, the better for us. Yes, the world is in shambles. But you know what? There’s a lot of good in it, too. Every person on the planet has a little bit of that.
I’ve been called a “happy person,” and “naïve” and “childish” all my life for believing in people and for liking the things I like – light-up shoes, decorating my room in bright colors, owning stuffed animals, loving cartoons, and believing in people. Let me tell you – all of that is fueled by bitterness and a strict determination to have some brightness in the world.
And every time I force myself to compliment someone who seems a little grumpy, or I scold myself for thinking judgmentally about someone, or I bring cookies to school – that’s fueled by bitterness and a strict determination to have some brightness in the world.
So, here’s what I’ve learned over the span of this short year:
Believe in goodness of people, even when it’s difficult.
Cultivate kindness. Forgive yourself when you’re mean – you’re only human, and sometimes certain individuals deserve a dash of meanness. But always strive for kindness, and ask for forgiveness when you cross a line.
Buy those light-up shoes and that stuffed animal.
Study what you love.
Hand out random cookies.

if you don't mind: what happened about the zine?
oh anon….just alot. it’s ok, I’m ok now but between alot of the zine’s I’ve been in people have been really awful to work with or dropped the project or never gotten in touch with me…etc. modding has its own issues with rude people who try to run everything for you and critisize everything you do it’s just really frustrating and makes me tired along with alot of frustrating irl scenarios for me too. ive rarely received my own copies of zine’s I’ve contributed in….however, some zines I’m in have been wonderful and I’m really looking forward to them…wonderful mods, art, and contributors. I’m just in general so jaded and have a lot to say on the general zine scene as it exists right now. maybe I’ll get into ait another time I’m just really tired and cynical

Mary Morstan is a Mary Sue
I was browsing around and came upon the Universal Mary Sue Litmus Test, and was struck by the definition the test writer gave of a Mary Sue:
“…a character (male, female, or otherwise) who is given or is expected to be given unwarranted preferential treatment and unearned respect, thereby compromising the integrity and believability of the story and/or its characters.” (italics mine)
Wow, I thought, that seems like a perfect description of Mary Morstan in Sherlock.  I know that one of my major frustrations with season 4 (and, to some extent, season 3) was her usurping John’s role with Sherlock and driving a wedge between them, despite Mofftiss saying that she would not (of course, I know that they lie).  And then there’s the whole defying-physics, leap-in-front-of-a-speeding-bullet thing…
I found myself wondering how she would score on the test.
The answer is: very badly.  She got a 150.  Anything over 50 is considered to be “…almost certainly a Mary Sue, and a bad one at that.”
Details about specific responses under the cut...
(I paraphrased some of the questions - the original test and original wording can be found at the link above)
Is your character described as especially beautiful?
(In script, Mary is described as “very striking” at first introduction.  Contrast with the script descriptions of John (thickset, weathered) and Sherlock (tall, lean, imperious) at first introduction.)
Does your character have any of the following: particularly unusual/exotic birthmark, tattoo, or blood color?
Has your character been in a lot of physical fights/battles but doesn’t have a lot of scars to show for it?
Do you (Mofftiss) think of your character as a role model?
(I’d say given her role in s4, yes they do.)
Does your character openly call anyone else incapable, incompetent, foolish, etc., but the character or characters referred to as such DON’T find your character’s behavior insulting, hurtful, rude, belittling, condescending, or insubordinate?
And do most/all of the character’s friends fail to get angry at your character’s behavior, despite knowing that their friend was insulted?
Is the insulted person the type of person who’d never let that type of behavior slide with anyone else?
(I think Mary does this with both John and Sherlock)
Does your character ever strike or attack any other character…yet the character or characters affected don’t get angry or upset over it?
And do most/all of the character’s friends fail to get angry or upset, despite knowing what your character did?
Is the victim the type of person who’d never let that behavior slide with anyone else?
Did a serious injury result?
Do authority figures NOT punish your character when they probably would have punished xir peers under the same circumstances?
Are the rules of the universe bent or broken for your character?
Did you choose your character’s occupation and/or hobbies because you think they sound neat, glamorous, prestigious, or exciting?
Is your character some sort of genius or prodigy, and/or is unusually accomplished for xir age, time period, place, occupation, and/or social status?
In something that is extremely desirable and/or useful within the story’s universe?
In something that is extremely difficult for virtually anyone to achieve?
Is your character simply the best or among the best among xir peer group?
Is xe famous or renowned for any of these?
Are other characters extremely impressed or astonished at your character’s skills?
Do they impress even the most cynical, jaded, exacting, or experienced?
(Mary says her assassination team was at the “top of our game” for years, Sherlock describes her as having an “extraordinarily retentive memory”)
Does your character end up in a tight spot and turn out to have cool, yet uncompletely foreshadowed powers or skills that were dormant and/or unknown before?
If/when your character does make any major mistakes, are they quickly and easily forgiven with no real consequences for the character?
Did these mistakes ever result in important property or items being seriously endangered, damaged, or destroyed?
Did these mistakes ever result in people being seriously endangered and/or injured?
Did these mistakes ever result in anyone dying?
(pretty much the entirety of The Six Thatchers, there)
Does your character ever single-handedly take out more armed forces than you can count on one hand using xir kickass awesome skills in one go?
When your character makes new friends, do they care about your character as much or even more than they care for friends they’ve had longer after knowing your character for only a short time?
Would any of them die for your character?
Even characters that are not known for their friendly, outgoing attitudes?
Does any character who is normally portrayed as being cold, callous, or even cruel to others treat your character with warmth and kindness?
(I’d argue that all of these apply to Sherlock’s relationship with Mary.  When he shoots Magnusson, he’s essentially sacrificing his life for hers.)
Do other characters often quickly and readily put their own responsibilities, dreams, and even lives on hold in order to help out your character, and/or quickly and readily engage in illegal or risky activity to help your character?
Does your character’s love interest give up on or ignore prior responsibilities, deeply-held convictions, personal goals, passions, or lifelong dreams and ambitions to be with your character and live the life your character wants?
Was your character orphaned, abandoned, kicked out, or at least raised by a person/family that was not xir own family?
Was your character the very last or only survivor of anything?
(Mary thought she was the only survivor of Tbilisi until Ajay showed up)
Has your character lost a close friend?
Does your character angst about something xe did in the past?
If your character has to prove xirself, does xe completely pwn everyone else and make them look like buffoons in the process?
Do you (Mofftiss) feel insulted, attacked, or defensive when someone does not like your character?
If people don’t like your character, do you believe it’s just because they don’t “get” xir, or that they’re just jealous of your character?
Does a story arc pretty much center around your character, or is xe the main source of conflict in the story/arc?
Does your character have a capability asset (talent, ability, skill, etc.) that for intents and purposes is identical to one had by a canon character, and the canon character’s capability is supposed to be extremely rare?
If your character’s capability asset is identical or near-identical to one a canon character has, does it work even better or more efficiently than the canon character’s?
Do your character’s capability assets allow xir to do the same job or fill the same role or function as a canon character, on the same team or in the same workplace as the canon character?
Do your character’s capability assets allow xir to do something a canon character did in the original story?
(this is probably my biggest beef with s4 – that Mary essentially took over John’s role with respect to helping Sherlock with cases and was seen as being as good as or better than John in that role. Sherlock even points out that her skill set is more impressive for the work than John’s)
Does your character belong to or join an elite or special group?
Does xe specifically join the team/clique/crew/unit that the canon characters belong to?
Is xe accepted as one of the gang quickly, easily, and with no complaints or reluctance from anyone whose opinion matters?
(see above about replacing John/solving cases with John and Sherlock.  I also feel like this speaks to Mycroft’s lack of protest about his little brother solving cases and running around with a) an assassin, b) the woman who shot him)
Does your character need a canon character to help xir work past xir problems and traumas?
Does the canon character have to reorganize xir schedule or set back other projects or personal goals to make time for your character?
Has the canon character never been shown as the type of person to try to reach out and help people in this way?
(I think this speaks to Sherlock’s complete willingness to help Mary in TST)
Does a major canon character fall for/is attracted to your character?
Does your character fall for/is attracted to a major canon character?
If your character falls in love with or becomes the significant other/partner of a canon character, does your character’s love interest break up with a canon partner in order to make way for your character’s relationship?
Does your character end up moving in with or living fairly close to any of the canon characters?
(even if you don’t see John and Sherlock’s relationship as romantic, you can’t deny that John marrying Mary broke up John and Sherlock’s partnership/friendship, something that didn’t happen in the original ACD canon.)
Does your character save the canon characters from a situation or come up with a solution that they probably could have done by themselves before?
Does your character alter the behavior or habits of any canon character, or get any canon character to do something they’d normally be reluctant, averse, or even opposed to doing?
And the canon character isn’t angry or at the very least annoyed with your character’s antics?
Was the behavior or habit in question one of the fundamental, defining traits of the canon character?
Is your character ever taken, threatened, and/or endangered by the villain?
Was there a special reason the villain targeted your character?
Does your character do something that only a canon character should have done?
Does your character play a crucial role in resolving the conflict of the story/arc?
Does your character actually die in the process?
Does everyone mourn the death of your character?
Is xe revived/resurrected/brought back later?
Does your character know everything/almost everything about what’s going on in the story/arc?
While the canon characters know almost nothing at all?
Does your character play a central role in the resolution of the story/arc?
Does this plot/arc replace a canon storyline?
Do you plan on writing stories about your character’s children?

Get Into My Oc
So I was tagged by @chaitea09 and @sunshinemage for this delightful meme, and decided to go with one of my lesser known kiddos. So, without further ado:
Cyrus
Tumblr media
NAME: Cyrus du Volise
AGE: 25 at the Conclave
GENDER: Male
ORIENTATION: Bisexual
PROFESSION: Soldier
BACKGROUND (TW: child abuse, abuse): Cyrus was raised in south-eastern Orlais, close to the Ferelden border, in the manor estate of his father, former decorated chevalier Joustis du Volise. Accused and acquitted of murder, Joustis was already famous for his quick temper, but became cruel after his disgraced departure from the tournament circuit and lack of patronage following the extended and highly damaging trial. Cyrus’ mother bore the brunt of his abuse, until she finally fled a few months before Cyrus turned two. His only memory of her is of a song she used to hum to him when she put him to sleep, and it is not something he looks back on fondly.
Growing up was painful in many ways, particularly for such a meek child. Shut away in the manor estate, Cyrus made no real friends, and the household staff were too frightened of his father to dare befriend him openly. His father took to blaming Cyrus for his mother leaving, refusing to see fault in himself, and treated Cyrus with cold disdain as a result. It was when he turned thirteen that the physical abuse began, but with little worldly knowledge and no one to lean on, Cyrus found himself trapped in a house that became a prison. As he grew older, his resentment grew with him, not only of his father, but of his mother as well.
He did not blame her for leaving. He blamed her for leaving him behind to suffer the consequences.
When he reached eighteen Cyrus began sneaking out to the nearby town, uncaring of his father’s punishments because he would bear them regardless. Something in him shifted, and the meek, kind child he had been gave way to someone bitter and angry at the world for turning a blind eye. He drank and staggered home, and the numbness made the beatings easier to stomach. He met people, but still made no true friends, sometimes spending nights accompanying other people in their safer beds just to put off the inevitable return home. Cyrus was arrogant. Rude. Cruel and cynical, but he made sure of one thing: he never threw the first punch. That was the realm of his father, and it was a place he never wanted to tread. He was better. Not by much, but he was better. At the end of the day, he decided he might as well earn the beatings.
Just before his twenty-fourth birthday, Cyrus made the decision to leave for good. He packed his bags and whatever possessions he could comfortably carry, but while he was searching for coin one of the servants tipped his father off, revealing his plan. However, to Cyrus’ surprise, his father invited him to dinner instead. One last time, he had claimed. It smelled of a trap, but what choice did Cyrus have? His father was better trained and still much stronger, and Cyrus had inherited his mother’s shorter, leaner stature. In any case, whatever his father put in the wine, Cyrus remembered next to nothing of that dinner.
When he woke, it was on the side of the road with nothing but the clothes on his back and a searing pain that seemed to engulf the entirety of his face. It wasn’t until he found a pool of water still enough to offer reflection that he realised what his father had done. Stunned, Cyrus remembered reaching up with shaky hands, brushing the red, swollen lines that marred his face, not quite believing what he was seeing. In the end, he could only assume it was his father’s parting gift for the son everyone described as a ‘spitting image’ of him when he was young and loved. Just like that, his father took the one thing Cyrus had thought his own – the decision to finally leave – and twisted it. Just like that, Cyrus found himself alone with nothing.
So, he started walking.
PHYSICAL
BODY TYPE: Svelte. Once he begins training with the Inquisition and eating properly, his muscles fill out more, but his overall frame is still relatively lean compared to many of the other soldiers.
EYES: Ice blue
HAIR: Blue-black
SKIN: Light tan
HEIGHT: 5'8”
WEIGHT: 155 LBS / 70.5KG
SKILLS (S.P.E.C.I.A.L + M)
STRENGTH: 6/10; Cyrus is much faster than he is strong, favouring striking swiftly and with sharp precision over getting into contests of strength. He is more likely to break through an opponent’s defence through sheer volley, rather than brute force.
PERCEPTION: 9/10; Cyrus is very perceptive, particularly to people’s moods, from a lifetime spent trying to dodge his father’s foul ones. He seems to always keep one eye open, refusing to fully relax, as though expecting something bad to happen the moment he lets his guard down.
ENDURANCE:  5/10; While fast, Cyrus does tire quickly. The bursts of speed he favours take their toll, and if the fight drags on for too long, he often finds himself in trouble. In training, he dominates in the sprints, but falls back on longer endurance runs.
CHARISMA:  2/10; He is capable of having his moments when he is with someone he trusts, but they come only in short, bright slivers that surprise both Cyrus and the person to whom he is speaking. Majority of the time, he acts like an asshole and goads people into hating him because it is easier for him to handle when he knows he deserves it. It gives him a sense of control over the situation, even if the situation is not a positive one.
INTELLIGENCE: 8/10; Being locked up in the manor had its benefits, given the amount of books his mother had brought with her when she married Cyrus’ father. More often than not, he found comfort in quiet pages. However, Cyrus lacked street smarts, and he learned some very difficult lessons very quickly once his father left him on the side of the road with nothing.
AGILITY: 9/10; He is fast. It is one of the things he prided himself on, and one of the things he could practice without raising suspicion. He learned that when someone is stronger than you, it’s best to just try to avoid their swings, or move with them to lessen the impact.
LUCK: 5/10; A lot of his life could only be defined as unlucky. However, he considered finding the Inquisition and meeting the Dawn Squad one of the luckiest things that could ever happen to anyone.
MAGIC: 0/10; Cyrus is a non-mage, and dislikes healing magic in particular due to one of his father’s servants manifesting and staying on staff to heal the worst of Cyrus’ injuries growing up. In order to stay out of the Circle, the mage-servant agreed to make a blank slate of Cyrus every time he was broken.
LIKES
COLORS: Dark shades that remind him of comfort beneath blankets, warm yellows and oranges (like candlelight), and the blue of the ocean.
SMELLS: The heavy scent before rain, vanilla, wood smoke and parchment.
FOOD: Soft bread and warm butter, cinnamon, salmon, rice, and pork crackling.
FRUITS: Apples, berries, grapes, apricots.
DRINKS: Chai tea, warm water with honey, cool water with lemon and lime, any juice.
ALCOHOLIC DRINKS: Ale, wine, mead, whiskey, brandy… etc. You get the idea. If it’s alcoholic, he’ll drink it.
OTHER
SMOKE: No. His father smokes a pipe, and it is another thing that leaves him feeling queasy just being in the same room and smelling it.
DRUGS: He struggles with an addiction to a sleeping remedy meant for short-term relief after the attack on Haven, but he leans on it for far too long and becomes dependent. The squad eventually finds out and gets him help (in canon, Anacrea finds an alternative and weans him off it).
DRIVER’S LICENSE?: In a modern!AU, he would get his license in his mid to late 20s, having been cooped up for so much of his youth without access to a car.
I will tag... @smolpocketmonstercoffee, @lavellanlove, @the-jade-goblin, @bladeverbena aaaaand @chaitea09 (for one of your other babs) ;D
