Between Jack trying to explain to Arthur how Van Helsing's words translate to him diagnosing Lucy's mysterious illnes, and Van Helsing's absolute monologue titled "My friend John is a loser who will never get a girlfriend" this entry set the new growing relationship of Lucy and Van Helsing in a very clever way.
This is the first time (in the context of the book) that we see someone that is not Mina talk to Lucy, and use the tricks that she uses to direct a conversation. It is incredible that Van Helsing not only noticed Lucy's talking skills even if she was struggling thanks to the blood loss:
"though I could see that the poor girl was making a hard struggle for it. I believe Van Helsing saw it, too, for I saw the quick look under his bushy brows that I knew of old."
But also knew exactly what he needed to do to make Lucy at ease so she could talk freely about what is happening without feeling the social pressure to perform. Lucy is someone who hides her actual state to not worry the people around her, so she probably felt so much dread of having to explain to two people her suffering. As we know Lucy hates talking about herself.
And what does Van Helsing does when he noticed this?
"Then he began to chat of all things except ourselves and diseases and with such an infinite geniality that I could see poor Lucy's pretense of animation merge into reality."
Van Helsing put himself both into the role of orator, and Lucy's role of addressee at the same time, leaving her to be just an observer in a conversation that is supposed to be about her. It's a very nice action from Van Helsing, and an even better first impression from Lucy's perspective.
Then, after Van Helsing gives that outstanding monologue about Seward's lack of understanding about young ladies, Lucy is finally relaxed enough to be honest with this old doctor that came to see her. Plus, Lucy knows that she can be truthfull this time because Van Helsing built the correct situation in where she can talk freely.

My first lyricstuck, made in 2021 based on a Vietnamese anti-war song from the 1960s. The haunting melody and lyrics inspired me to draw this even though i knew its target audience is one(1).
(Warning: the links only work half of the time, ask tumblr)
Amateurish translation below the line - My full translation here
Hát trên những xác người (Singing upon corpses)
Climbing up the hills at dusk, singing upon corpses
I have seen, I have seen
On the streets, people fleeing, carrying one another
Climbing up the hills at dusk, singing upon corpses
I have seen, I have seen
By the garden, a mother hugging her child's remains
Mother applauds the corpse of her child, she claps for peace
Mankind applauds to add rhythm, it claps for shared tribulations

Jack Stauber x Jojo's Bizarre Adventure concepts! Basically, focus was on stands. I love stands. Obviously as these were all doodled with not complete confidence, if I ever come into this idea again, designs could change. Until then, hope this idea entertains!

the life expectancy is getting longer and longer. dw is a sci-fi. both in reality and fiction we wish for a long life in good health, quality and dignity. just checked, average life expectancy in the uk is over 80 years, and 1. it's been rising for years; 2. we need to remember that it's 'average'. (yep, that demographic would lead to working longer but it's a topic for a different time.) there are and will be even more advanced technology and medicine. yes, we cannot cure some things right now but who knows what remedies we will have in 20, 50, 100, 250 years?
and jack harkness comes from 3000 years into the future. am i that mistaken to assume that life expectancy could be much longer in the 51st century? for example, idk, 200 years? (and even if i am, it's sci-fi and my headcanon.) (not that this man would ever live to that age, not with his life-style.) what i'm saying is, maybe being 180 isn't that weird for people from that time period, weird is not aging a day. oh, and not-dying over 1000 times. that for sure.
