FRIENDS? FRIENDS.
percy jackson x annabeth chase blurb
warnings: none, just some pre-percabeth cuteness! some minor spoilers for the TV show & the books but nothing major or all that important
note: percy & annabeth will forever have a place in my heart. I'd love to write more little drabbles of them! feel free to send it any requests! I'll also write for other character (but keep in mind I am just now reading the House of Hades so I haven't reached the end of the heroes of olympus series yet). also, please use your imagination a little as to where this would fit it post the lightening thief quest lol.
...
Moonlight reflected off the steady water, bringing a sense of peace to Percy as he dangled his feet off the edge of the pier. He traced patterns in the wood grooves and attempted to clear his head which hadn’t stopped spinning since he arrived at camp.
He should have been more alert, but he missed the series of footsteps that crept up on him until he felt a presence at his back.
Percy jumped, startled, and reflectively reached for Riptide.
“Hey,” Annabeth greeted, instantly disarming Percy. He let out a sigh of relief and dropped his hand back onto the pier.
“Hi.”
She looked wide awake despite the late hour. All of the other campers were asleep or tucked away inside their cabins. Percy had spent the better part of a couple of hours tossing and turning until he gave up trying to sleep and wandered out toward the lake, the only place at camp where he felt the most at ease.
It looked like Annabeth was in the same boat as him. Instead of her usual orange camp shirt and cargo pants, she wore a matching, soft pink sweatshirt and sweatpants. Little hearts were embroidered on the front pockets of the sweats and the neckline of sweatshirt.
With a light smirk, Percy said, “Nice PJs.”
She rolled her eyes in typical fashion and moved beside him before she took a seat. Annabeth sat close enough that her arm brushed against his. Percy didn’t know if she meant to sit that close, but she didn’t move away. She stayed with her arm nearly resting up against his and dangled her feet over the edge of the pier.
“They were a gift from the Aphrodite Cabin,” she said, rubbing her thumb over the little hearts on her collar with a small smile on her lips. “They help my bunkmate, Veronica, with my braids.”
Percy hummed in response before he said, “You look like you belong in their cabin.” He didn’t quite realize what he said until the words left his lips and his cheeks heated up instantly in embarrassment; however, he didn’t get the chance to say anything before Annabeth did.
“Are you calling me beautiful, Seaweed Brain?”
Percy silently thanked the gods it was dark on the pier and that Annabeth couldn’t see the red hue of his cheeks. He cleared his throat and shook his head. “No! I mean, that’s not what…not that you’re ugly…oh jeez.” Ducking his head, Percy contemplated throwing himself off the pier.
Annabeth was cool and she obviously was cool looking. It wouldn't have been a shocker if she had been claimed by Aphrodite, but because of her wicked brain and the fact that she was always six steps ahead of everyone, Athena made more sense. Athena was probably cool looking too; she was a goddess after all. Everyone in the Aphrodite Cabin was also cool looking because their mother was known for being the most beautiful goddess of all, or whatever, but they were no Annabeth.
A belly laugh erupted from her throat and echoed through the quiet air, taking Percy by surprise. She slapped her hand over her stomach and threw her head back as she managed to say between laughs, “You should see your face right now!” Percy couldn’t help but smile sheepishly.
Once her laughter subsided, she shook her head. “I’m just teasing you.”
“Very funny,” said Percy, desperate to change the subject. “What’re you doing out here, anyway?”
“I couldn’t sleep,” she replied. “You?”
Percy had gotten used to his mind racing and almost never turning off, but after they returned from their quest and he finally had a second to think over everything that had happened since learning he was a half-blood, his brain was in overdrive. There were a million more questions he had but was slightly scared to get answered. He needed to sleep off their quest, but every time he closed his eyes, he was bombarded with visions that made little sense and unsettling memories of every time he, Annabeth, and Grover nearly died over the course of one week.
“I just needed somewhere to think,” he answered.
Humming in response, they let their conversation drift off into comfortable silence for a couple of moments.
Percy wondered if her mind was also swarmed with too many thoughts, memories, and questions. It seemed unlikely, Annabeth having questions. If there was one thing he learned about her from their time together, it was that she knew the answer to nearly everything, and if she didn’t know the answer, she would figure it out before anyone else.
“Percy?”
“Yeah?”
“Can I ask you something?”
He furrowed his brows and turned his head to look at her. “Uh, sure.”
“You remember when we were at Meduas’ and you were telling Grover and me about the prophecy the Oracle gave you?” He nodded, urging her to continue. “You said that you only picked me for the quest because you couldn’t see us ever becoming friends.” Her voice had become a lot softer than normal, which freaked Percy out. A part of him wanted her to insult him or start bickering with him instead. The small but noticeable twinge of sadness in her voice and the frown that rested on her lips twisted up his stomach in a really weird and uncomfortable way.
“Do you still feel that way?”
“Are you insane?” he asked, wide-eyed and confused. She simply shrugged and kept her gaze set on the rippling water ahead of them. “No. No way. I didn’t even fully feel that way I said it. I was just really worried about the Oracle and really, really confused.”
She met his gaze and narrowed her eyes slightly, not believing him.
“Okay, I guess I meant it a little but only because you were intense and I didn’t think you would’ve wanted to be friends with me, especially after you left me to fight Clarrise alone and then shoved me into the lake.”
“I needed proof that you were who I thought you were,” Annabeth defended, causing him to smile lightly.
“Yeah, and it worked. My dad claimed me because you didn’t really give him a choice.”
“I think the words you’re looking for is ‘thank you.’” There was a beat before she sighed and backtracked a little, even though Percy wasn't upset at her for it. He understood why she did it, and who knows when or if his dad would have claimed him if she hadn't. “Sorry. I maybe could have helped you a little or not pushed you so hard.”
With a wave of his hand, he dismissed her. “Nah, I get it. It did help, and you got to go on your quest. But then we kind of fought at the beginning and I figured you really didn’t like me.”
Annabeth moved her hands into her lap and picked at the skin around her fingernails, almost like she was nervous, which seemed unlikely. Maybe Percy was just really bad at reading people. Annabeth seemed good at it, though. She was kind of like Grover in that way; she could sense danger or a problem before it appeared.
“Though, I kinda got the idea that maybe you didn’t totally hate me by the end of the quest.”
She shrugged again, but her frown disappeared. “Maybe I don’t.”
“Cool,” he smiled until he realized maybe he was smiling a little too big and he needed to chill out. “Because, you know, if I have to go on another quest, I would…well, I’d probably pick you again.”
Annabeth moved to look at him. “Probably?”
“Definitely, actually.”
That got her to smile, and Percy felt himself relax. “I’d pick you too,” she said before quickly adding, “As long as I’m still in charge.”
Percy put his hand to his forehead in a mock salute. He was not going to argue with her, not after she was the main reason they didn’t die on their quest.
A yawn escaped Annabeth that she tried to muffle under the sleeve of her pink sweatshirt. The night had caught up to him too, and the fatigue of the past week settled in his bones. He rolled his shoulders back with a stretch before he stood to his feet.
Outstretching a hand toward her, Percy said, “We should head back.”
She didn’t hesitate to grab his hand and let him help her up. Her hand was really warm compared to his cold one, and he held it just for a second longer after she was standing up. Annabeth cleared her throat and tucked her hands into the pocket of her sweatshirt before she led the way off the pier.
Together they walked the footpath back to the cabins, listening to the croak of the frogs around the lake fade and the buzz of crickets grow louder.
They arrived at Percy’s cabin first. Annabeth paused alongside him and offered him another smile as she said, “Night, Percy.”
He grinned. “Night, Annabeth.”
She turned on her heel and started walking toward her cabin, still with her hands in her pockets and her head held high.
Friends. That was nice. He had another real friend that he trusted and who trusted him. If nothing else went right for him, at least he had that. Maybe that was all he really needed to survive as a Half-Blood. Maybe he would be okay.

Another ✨library haul✨
Sooo I may have gone a bit overboard this time…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
FIFTEEN BOOKS!!! And this isn’t counting the 8 or so I got before these and still have… guess I really gotta get reading!
The themes that are emerging here are trans women, lesbians, and sci-fi—all things I am always loving 😌 I’m particularly excited about These Fragile Graces, This Fugitive Heart by Izzy Wasserstein, a new release that I specifically requested our collection developer to buy and put on hold for me, the Monk & Robot duology by Becky Chambers (A Psalm for the Wild Built and A Prayer for the Crown Shy), and (almost) all of the books in Martha Wells’ Murderbot Diaries series—I’m still waiting on the second one to come back!
I’m very excited to get around to these, but more than anything, I’m grateful my library has such a great collection for so many of the books I’ve been wanting to read for so long and for newer releases too :)

Bonnet just hummed, shifting his position. He leaned against the mast and Izzy felt his arm barely brush against his own. The wind blew, tugging at loose lines and the fabric of their clothing. Izzy could almost imagine how it would tousle Bonnets perfectly coiffed hair. He frowned.
“How long have you been at sea?” Bonnet asked, now on Izzy’s right.
“All my life.” It was only a slight exaggeration.
Bonnet hummed. They sat in silence for a few long moments before he spoke again. “Do you have a favorite?”
Izzy looked at him askance. “Favorite what?”
“A favorite constellation,” Bonnet said, meeting his eyes. “You seem to know plenty about them.”
Izzy snorted. “It’s not some hobby you play favorites with, it’s practical.”
“Oh come now,” Bonnet said, leaning in closer. Izzy revisited his earlier desire to push him off. “Even you can’t look up at all of this—” he punctuated the word with a wide sweep of his arm across the night sky. “—and not feel something.”

UNDERWATER KISSES
percy jackson x annabeth chase
requested ! sometime after TBOO. percy & annabeth enjoy a day at the beach.
...
“Are you watching?”
Annabeth pushed her sunglasses to the top of her head, despite the bright rays of sun that beat down on the beach.
“I’m watching,” she replied, cupping her hands around her mouth so her boyfriend could hear from where he stood in knee-deep water. She sat on a towel laid out on the sand, attempting to split her attention between the book in her lap and Percy splashing around in the water.
He grinned wildly before a wave a little larger than the rest grew behind him. Percy jumped into the wave as it approached him and disappeared under the water for a moment before his body washed up on shore at Annabeth’s feet. As the wave retreated, Percy laid on the wet sand, giggling like a little kid.
It had been too long since the two of them had a chance to relax and act their age without the weight of the world on their shoulders. Annabeth had a hard time remembering the last time Percy looked so relaxed. His shoulders weren't fixed in a tense position nor were his fingers hovering over the pocket he kept Riptide in. He wasn’t constantly looking over his shoulder, ready for something horrible to happen. Instead, Percy was laughing with sand in his hair and the sun kissing his skin, unbothered and undisturbed.
If it were up to Annabeth, she would make sure he was always like that. Unfortunately, the life of a demi-god never stayed calm forever, especially for a child of the big three, like Percy. Annabeth wanted to soak up every second of normalcy with him before the world was threatened, again.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” he asked, pushing her out of her thoughts. She hadn’t realized she’d been staring at him. His sea glass eyes stared back from where he stretched out on the wet sand, the scars on his face faded and the worry lines smoothed from the salt water.
“I like you like this.”
Percy sat up and furrowed his brows. “Like what?”
Annabeth closed her book and tucked it back in her bag, where the hat from her mother and dagger were safely secured, just in case. She crawled off her towel and moved to sit beside him where the crashed waves kissed their legs before it was pulled back out. He instinctively wrapped an arm around her shoulder, and she leaned into his side like she had done a hundred times before, but it still made her face feel hot and caused little butterflies to flutter inside her stomach.
“Happy. Relaxed. And a little like a wet dog.”
Percy shook his head, causing his wet hair to spew droplets over her. She groaned and wiped the water from her face as she glared upwards at him. “Uncalled for, Seaweed Brain.”
The sunlight made his eyes sparkle the same way they did when she met him at camp when they were twelve years old and completely clueless as to what the future held for them. While she wished they had a normal childhood, free from the troubles they had faced both side-by-side and on their own, Annabeth would live through all of it again if that meant she ended up with Percy.
“I feel happy and relaxed because you’re here, Wise Girl.”
She smiled but it began to falter as unwanted thoughts crawled into her brain like sick little spiders. Of course, Percy noticed her mood shift, and he used his opposite hand that wasn't wrapped around her shoulder to brush some sand from her cheek. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” she said, but not convincingly. “I just wish it could stay like this. I wish we could stay like this.”
“On a beach?”
Annabeth let out a breathy laugh. “Happy and relaxed. But I wouldn’t be opposed to living on a beach.”
“Why can’t it stay like this?” he asked, and she made a sound between a scoff and a huff.
“Come on-”
“Nope.” Percy removed his arm from her shoulder and stood up. The sun that hung behind his head gave him a halo of light, drenching him with a pretty golden glow. “You come on.” He outstretched his hand toward her, and she took it out of curiosity and a longing to be close to him for as long as she could before their lives were thrust back into inevitable chaos.
He said nothing as he led the way into the ocean. The water was a refreshing cool against Annabeth’s warm skin and the mixture of seashells and seaweed under her feet tickled.
Percy walked them out until the water was at Annabeth’s waist, then he turned around and grinned at her once more. That time, however, his smile was one of mischief and his eyes sparkled with a plan of some kind.
“What are we doing?” she asked, still holding his hand just above the water.
“We are pretending that things will always be this way. There are no more doomsdays coming or monsters hunting us. We are just normal half-bloods on a date, having fun, okay?”
Gods it sounded nice, so nice that Annabeth almost believed it to be true. She was a realist, a habit of being a child of Athena. She liked it when things were for certain, even if the certainty was a downer. But standing in the ocean with Percy, who was convincing with his toothy smile and wet curls plastered to his head, Annabeth liked the idea that their troubles were over and they finally had a chance to be normal.
She swallowed any negativity that threatened to leave her lips and let the lull of the calm sea relax her.
“Okay,” Annabeth said, squeezing his hand.
Percy squeezed her hand back before the mischievous grin overtook his whole face. Before she had time to react, he tugged on her hand hard and plunged into the water.
Annabeth was completely wrapped in the cool sea with closed eyes and no clue what direction she was moving. She didn’t panic because Percy still held onto her and she trusted him more than she trusted herself, but she did have a few choice words aimed at him rattling around her head.
She held her breath, but after they were underwater for a mere moment, a bubble appeared around her head and fresh air entered her lungs.
Opening her eyes and sucking in a couple of deep breaths, she glared at Percy. “A warning would have been nice!”
“That would’ve ruined the fun!” he said, occupying the same bubble of air as she was. He pulled her further out until the sea floor dropped out and fish swam in friendly circles around them. The surface wasn’t too far, close enough that Annabeth could have swum it with some ease, but far enough out that they wouldn’t be spotted by any beachgoers that happened to show up.
Percy turned around and faced her. Their noses were almost touching, and their hands were still clasped together. “Did I tell you that you look pretty today?”
Annabeth rolled her eyes playfully and pulled him closer so she could throw her hands over his shoulders. “Yeah, five times actually.”
“Good.” He hugged her waist and leaned his forehead against hers.
“You look pretty too,” said Annabeth, which caused a slight pink tint to spread across his cheeks. She reached up and brushed a curl from his forehead before closing the small gap between them. They kissed in the solitude and safety of the bubble, under the water, just like they had after defeating Kronos. They were so young back then, even though it was only a couple of years prior. It felt like a different lifetime until she was kissing him underwater again, and suddenly she was that twelve-year-old with a stupid crush on the boy who always believed in her.

so a few months ago I went to the WGF library in Los Angeles and read all the scripts for ofmd s1, some of them were later drafts and some were earlier, idk how early but a lot changed. they were good scripts but the final product is MUCH much better, the actors really brought the characters to life and I suspect there was even more improv than we thought there was. anyway I wrote down some of the stuff that I thought was kinda fun or interesting:
-Izzy/Fang/Ivan helped get Stede's ship unstuck in episode 2, their dynamic was less antagonistic and more kinda silly
-Blackbeard was described as having David Lee Roth vibes
-lots more of Pete's Blackbeard stories
-Buttons started the trend of pirates having birds on their shoulders by bringing Karl to the Republic of Pirates
-the crew had a Ye Olde Chore Wheel for the ship
-Jim inspired Ivan to explore his gender identity
-Roach was part of Lucius' little polycule
-there was a cute line where Stede was talking to his daughter and said "your Uncle Edward would love you"
-Alma had slightly more screentime in general, they were playing up her being a tomboy, wearing pants, and working in a stable iirc
-Stede was even more incredibly chill about Doug replacing him lmao he referred to Doug as "your father" when talking to Louis
-the Ed/Stede kiss was NOT in the draft I read!! it was still romantic but they just like bumped shoulders or something
-Stede picked up a waterlogged Lucius before he made it to the desert island to save the rest of the crew
-Izzy was revealed to be one of the Siete Gallos at the very end
