Hand in Hand - Ohmtoonz
This is for @omegawolfgirl who is constantly bombarding me with awesome fic ideas.
I’m just gonna say now, this involves A/B/O and mpreg, and whilst there’s nothing explicit I figured I’d warn you guys now.
Formalities done, I hope you enjoy :D
.
[Ohm POV]
They didn’t even have to knock on the door before Brock opened it, a warm smile on his face as he greeted the both of them, eagerly welcoming them into his home.
“Brian’s just finishing up dinner, but it’ll be another hour, is that okay?”
Before he could answer though, Luke beat him to it “Don’t worry about it, Brock, we’ll wait all day if need be” Brock gave them a small smile in response before heading into the kitchen to get them both some drinks, however they didn’t do much else a before small figure popped its head around the doorway, quickly bounding over to them.
“Unca Ry! Unca Ry!” He was quick to pick up the small child, placing him on his hip, wide smile on his face as he felt small arms wrap around him in a hug.
“Hey Jakey, you helping daddy with dinner?” The small boy nodded furiously at which he only laughed “You gonna make some of your famous brownies for pudding?”
“YEAH!” he tried not to wince at the shout in his ear, but he now had to try his best to get the small boy still as he started bouncing around in his arms “Daddy’s gonna add hazelnuts, he says it’s gonna be just like nutell-nutellna!”
“I can’t wait to try them then” He shot the kid a wide smile before the boy peered around him to catch Luke sat on the couch, watching them both with an affectionate look in his eyes.
“Unca Luke!” He felt Jake start to make grabby hands towards his mate, start to move around vigorously in an effort to make his way to the older man.
“Unca Luke? I don’t see him anywhere” He pretended to look around in front of him, earning a giggle from the small child who then started to point behind him towards Luke.
“There he is, look”
“Nope, still don’t see him”
“He’s there, he’s behind you” He feigned ignorance for another moment before he turned behind him, shooting a shy smile to Luke before announcing his victory.
“Oh, there’s Unca Luke, why didn’t you tell me?” Jake laughed a little before resuming his efforts to say hello to the taller man. He gently placed the boy down before he proceeded to jump up onto the couch, or more specifically on top of Luke who pretended to hurt by the motion.
He didn’t pay attention to much that was said between them, instead content to watch the scene before him, a fond look on his face as he tried to ignore the stirrings of his own feelings telling him that he couldn’t have this.
He doesn’t know how long it had been before Brock came to save Luke from the tickle fight he was currently losing, telling Jake that he needed to go make his brownies before Brian ate all the chocolate.
“You two are really good with him you know, he’s so excited to hear when you guys are coming round”
“He’s a good kid, you and Brian must be proud” A soft smile crossed Brocks’ face at the compliment, looking wistfully back towards the kitchen where his family was.
“We are, he’s everything to us” He could sense a slight bit of hesitation from the younger man as if he was weighing out a decision in his head but before he could ask, Brock came out with his answer. “We’re actually going to have another baby, I’m pregnant”
Both he and Luke were quick to congratulate the other man, and despite being over the moon for his friend he couldn’t help but feel the twist in his gut at the news. He’d always wanted kids, always hoped to have his own pups and since being mated to Luke that feeling had only increased tenfold, however, the Doctors’ words a few years ago still haunted him. He was infertile, or at least his chances were so low he may as well be considered infertile.
When he’d first met the Luke, the Alpha had told him that he wasn’t ready for kids straight away, which was easier for him as he didn’t have to go through the possible discussion that they probably would never have kids. Even now he wasn’t prepared for the day he would eventually have to tell him, the thought that he’d be viewed as a failure, that Luke would leave him for a better, more worthy Omega haunted him, but still, he kept quiet.
“Ryan?” He felt a warm hand gently shaking him and he turned to see Luke looking worriedly at him “You okay Ry? Kinda spaced out for a moment there”
“Yeah I’m fine, I’m okay. Must’ve just got lost in my thoughts” He cast a small smile at Luke to placate him but nevertheless he felt the Alphas arm curl tighter around him until he was pressed into the older man’s side, the scent of his mate quickly soothing him.
“Brock was just asking why we didn’t have pups of our own runnin’ around the place” He felt dread rise up in him at Lukes’ words, and he knows the other man can tell but he gets some sort of relief when Luke answers for him, rubbing a gentle hand down his back in an effort to comfort him. “Just haven’t been ready really, but I guess I wouldn’t mind little me’s runnin’ around the place”
“I would” he mumbled into Lukes’ chest, feeling the man’s chuckle which joined with his own, silence falling over the three of them.
“I don’t want to be rude or anything, but you guys are getting…older, I suggest trying sooner rather than later before you miss your chance” With a final warm smile Brock left them to their musings whilst he helped his family finish preparing their dinner.
He felt Luke nudge him slightly and he moved out from where he’d buried himself against the man’s chest “You sure you’re okay Ryan? If you’re not feelin’ good we can-“
“No, it’s not that, I’m fine, I just…The whole talk about kids and-“
“Hey, don’t worry about that now okay. We’ll talk about that later, agreed?” As much as he wanted to say no, to refuse to have the talk that he knew would break him, he knew it was time to come clean, to tell Luke the truth and he reluctantly nodded. “Good, now let’s just relax and enjoy some free food”
He chuckled at Lukes comment and once again found himself being pulled against the Alphas’ chest, easily resting his head over the man’s heart and letting the sound put him at ease.
“I heard that by the way, what’re we chopped liver?” They both laughed at Brians booming voice from the kitchen which held no actual heat to it.
“Love you too Brian” He was jostled slightly as Luke leaned up slightly to shout his own retort, but any indignation was quickly replaced by contentment as one of Lukes’ arms wrapped tight around him and the other went to gently weave its way through his hair.
***********
When they made it back home he immediately tailed it to the bedroom, trying to ignore Lukes’ stare after him as he tried to keep himself in check, wanting to wait as long as possible before the inevitable.
He quickly discarded his clothes in the laundry basket before making his way into the shower, uncaring about the cold water that sprayed on him whilst he waited for it to turn hot, his thoughts running around in endless circles in his head.
He was so in his head that he didn’t hear Luke join him, only felt a pair of warm arms wrap around him, causing him to jump, but before he could turn he felt a gentle kiss against his bonding mark on the back of his neck and he felt all his worries melt away at the touch.
He let himself be held against the warm body behind him, letting the scent of his mate crowd his senses to block out any pervading thoughts he had about their future. Too soon the water was turned off and too soon he was lifted out of the tub and carried back to their room where Luke dried him down.
He should feel embarrassed about his mate having to do everything for him but a part of him wanted to let it happen, knowing that this was probably the last chance he’d get to have the Alpha taking care of him.
“Ry? We need to talk, and you know we need too” He sat up from the bed to see Luke staring down at him, the older man looked almost emotionless, but he could see the slight flicker of worry in him.
With a nod he got up off of the bed, making his way quickly to the living room, not needing to look back to know that Luke was following him. He made his way to the couch, sitting as far on the edge as he could as he waited for Luke to take his seat beside him. He was trying to distract himself by pulling at a thread on his pajamas, surprised when he felt a warm hand on his thigh, slowly moving up to grab his hand and give it a comforting squeeze.
“What’s up Ry? You’ve been off ever since Brock-“
“Do you want kids?” He looked up at the taller man trying to gauge his reaction and being met only with surprise.
“What?”
“Do you want kids? Like really want kids?” After the initial shock, Luke seemed to compose himself somewhat, bringing his hand up to his lips to press a gentle kiss on it.
“Eventually, yes, I would like to have kids, and I’d like to have kids with you” Although the words were supposed to comfort him he couldn’t help but feel the pain in his chest grow stronger to the point that he almost couldn’t breathe.
He offered his mate a watery smile in reply “I can’t”
“What as in you’re not ready, or-“
“As in I physically can’t…I..I’m infertile Luke. The doctor said my chances are so low that-“ He couldn’t help the sob that broke free, glad when he felt Luke pull him closer, allowing him to bury himself in his mates’ neck whilst he let himself feel things he’d buried for years now. “I’m a shitty mate Luke, you deserve so much better…Someone who can give you-“
“Stop whatever you’re gonna say ‘cause I don’t wanna hear it. You’re my mate, you’ll always be my mate no matter whether you can have kids or not, okay?” He only held on tighter to the Alpha, letting a new round sobs work through him before he felt himself being pulled off of Luke, his face being held with soft hands gently wiping the tears from his face. “Listen to me, you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me and I will fuckin’ keep you by my side as long as you’ll have me”
He nodded best he could being held in Lukes’ hands and offered the best smile he could to the man in front of him before said man leaned down pressing a gentle kiss to his forehead and then light kisses on his neck that he knew would tickle him because of his beard.
Soon he was giggling lightly as deft hands pressed down on his sides, the sound accompanied by chuckles from the man on top of him who finally deemed him to have gone through enough of his torture. He was quick to wrap his arms around the older man’s neck, pulling him close and feeling his heart miss a beat when he felt Luke bury into his neck, trying not to squirm from his beard against his neck.
“I love you, so fucking much Luke. For years I didn’t tell you about…about me because I didn’t want to lose you-“ Luke was quick to lean up to look down at him as he spoke.
“Hey, c’mon I’m here to stay for better or worse remember? Besides, you’re doctors said you had a low chance, there’s still a chance for us yet, however small, and if not then we can always adopt. Seein’ you with Jake, I want that with you, no matter how we do it”
Before he could let his emotions overcome him again he leaned forward to press a gentle kiss against Lukes’ lips, both of them taking their time to show their love for the other.
“Right now, I don’t know about you but I’m about 30 seconds away from a food coma and would rather fall asleep in bed” Lukes’ comment made him laugh but more so for the fact that he made no effort to get up off of him.
“Well maybe if you moved your fat ass we could get to bed”
“The only person with a fat ass here is you Ry, you got that category beat every time”
He laughed at the comment, the subject having been brought up before and never fails to make him smile. In the next moment, Lukes’ lips were on his once again, he let the older man take control, content to just let go and feel everything his alpha had to give him before they broke apart, a final kiss to his shoulder before Luke stood up, offering him a hand up off the couch he gratefully accepted.
He went to wrap his arm around Lukes’ waist but instead clung to him for dear life when he was lifted up, bridal style, the older man chuckling to himself as he carried him to the bedroom.
*********
It had been almost two months since he and Luke had had their talk and it felt good to get that weight off of his chest knowing he no longer had to worry about losing his mate due to his own misgivings, even if it did take a bit of convincing at first.
It’s not long after Luke’s left for work when he’s just about to head out himself when nausea hits him. He steadies himself on the wall as he waits for the feeling to dissipate somewhat only he then has about 3 seconds before he’s throwing up.
He just about makes it to the toilet in time, leaning on the cold bowl as he brings up what he had for breakfast, silently cursing the colleague who shared his cubicle at work, who a week ago had promptly thrown up at their desk not ten minutes after they arrived.
When he had some form of reprieve he sent a quick message both to Luke and his boss saying he was throwing up, Luke quick to call him to see if he was okay. After their brief conversation, they agreed for Luke to call Craig to come to check up on him and to make sure he had supplies.
He didn’t realize he’d fallen asleep until he was shaken gently and through his blurred vision could just about make out Craigs’ face looking down at him worriedly. With a bit of heavy lifting, mostly on Craig’s part, he was on his feet, he was promptly taken to the sink to clean his mouth from the sour taste that still lingered, as well as to wash his face in an effort to wake him up a bit.
Craig then took him to the couch, promptly leaving him before returning with their spare duvet and a hot water bottle. Light chatter passed between them, mostly him thanking the other man for looking after him which his friend was all too happy to do. He was silently happy when Craig decided to stay for a couple of hours to keep him company, especially when he took on the gruesome task of emptying and cleaning his sick bowl.
Eventually, though Craig had to leave him, giving a promise of a three-course dinner as thanks he was now left to his own musings, mostly consisting of listening to whatever reality show was currently on the TV as he tried his best to keep himself composed.
Before he knew it he was asleep again, only waking when he felt a warm hand on his forehead and looking up he saw a set of soft brown eyes casting him a concerned look.
“How’re you doing? Any better?”
“A little I think” He gave Luke a small smile which seemed to appease him, the other man leaving him only to change into a pair of sweats before he joined him on the couch, taking up the mantle of sick duty when the nausea became too much.
********
With how torturous that first day had been he’d expected to have been sick the next day, three days at most, but when a week had gone by and his symptoms had only relented a little did Luke express his concern.
“Ry I really think you need to go see a doctor, you should’ve been gettin’ better by now” He shrugged off his mate’s worry, sure in the fact that just a couple more days and he’d be right as rain again.
“Liam was off the whole week when he was sick, I just caught his sucky bug”
“Sucky bug?”
“You know what I mean” He pouted his lips which only earned a chuckle from Luke who gave him a quick kiss on the forehead.
“Brians’ gonna pop round a little later with some soup Brock made. I’m really worried about you Ry, promise me you’ll get it checked out soon”
“You worry too much” At the pointed look Luke gave him he conceded to the older mans plea “If I’m still like this after Wednesday then I’ll get it looked at” Luke visibly relaxed at his words and with a final kiss to his head his mate was off for the day and he was once again left to the joys of daytime television.
It had only been a few hours before Brian came by, putting some of the soup in a bowl to be heated up whilst the rest was put in the fridge, gratefully accepting the bowl handed to him, almost moaning at how good the soup tasted as it soothed his sore throat.
“Tell Brock thanks, this is amazing. How’s he doing by the way? Last I heard he had to take a couple days off from work for rest” A sympathetic smile crossed Brians’ face before he answered.
“He’s alright, same as you really, stuck in bed wit’ morning sickness, poor Jake doesn’t know what’s goin’ on”
He rubbed a gentle hand on Brians’ arm in support “Well give him my best wishes, I hope he gets well soon”
Brian nodded in reply, looking around their living room a little before his eyes focused back on him. “So how long have you guys known? Would’a thought you’d ‘ave been buying anything and everything baby related at this point.”
He stared at the other Alpha in shock, spoon halfway to his mouth was stopped in its path as he tried to comprehend the younger man’s words. “Excuse me?”
“You’re goin’ through mornin’ sickness as well aren’t you? At least that’s what it sounded like when I spoke to Luke”
“No no no, nothing like that, I just caught a bug from work, and it’s been a bitch trying to get rid of it” Brian cast him a dubious look showing he truly didn’t believe his words but that was the truth, or at least his truth.
His heat had been a couple of months ago now and was the first one where he and Luke were trying, but not really trying for a baby, instead letting whatever happened happen, but surely he’d know if he was pregnant? Brock had said how he knew almost straight away when he was pregnant with Jake and as such he’d had no such revelations yet.
He ascertained with himself that he was just sick, that the bug that had gone around his office had somehow mutated and he’d been given the short straw. With a final thanks to Brian, the Alpha left him to his thoughts, trying to distract himself with the possible idea that he might be having a baby as he waited for Luke to come home.
*******
He almost broke his neck with how fast he turned his head to greet Luke when he came through the door, thoughtful but a somewhat hopeful look on his face as he took his shoes off, immediately heading straight for him.
“So, I spoke to Brian earlier”
He gave a sigh at those words “You don’t believe him, do you? Don’t you think I’d, you know, feel it if I was”
“He said he knew it with Jake cause he was able to hear its heartbeat by pressin’ his ear up to Brocks’ stomach”
“No”
“Why not? No harm in tryin’ is there? It’s better to know now than later right?”
With a sigh he sat up on the couch, pushing the blankets away from him as he settled down in front of where Luke now sat, hope clear on his face. Without a word he lifted up his shirt, exposing his stomach to the cold air of the room.
He flinched when Lukes’ cold hands rubbed his stomach gently before coming to rest on his hips, casting a final look up at him before he leaned in close, ear pressed against his stomach as they waited with bated breath.
He swears his heart is in his throat as he waits for Lukes’ verdict, knowing the answer when Luke only casts a sullen look up at him.
“Nothin’, guess you were right”
“Hey, Luke, we still have plenty of time okay?” He grabbed a hold of Lukes’ hand giving it a firm squeeze in comfort, getting a squeeze back from his mate in support.
Both of them settling down together on the couch as had become the norm for them now cuddled around one another.
**********
Thankfully for his friends and his own sanity, his illness cleared up somewhat over the next couple of days, Luke still insists that he should go see a doctor but having gotten better before the deadline he gave himself he deemed himself good to go back to his routine.
Whilst most of his actual throwing up had gone, he still occasionally got bouts of nausea which could be offset by anything, from moving too quickly or the smell of someone’s food wafting over to him, at which he’d excuse himself just in case he needed to throw up.
He tried to keep his issues from Luke, not wanting the older man to worry and who he’s sure would drag him to the doctor’s whether he wanted to or not, but from the odd glance Luke casts his way every now and then, he can’t help but worry that he does know.
It’s another month since he was ‘over’ his sickness and whilst a lot less common he still finds himself making his way to the bathroom just in case he was to throw up, now he was starting to get worried that something was actually wrong with him, like really wrong with him.
That night he steels himself to tell Luke the truth, that he was never truly over his illness and that it’s long overdue he visits the doctor.
He’s pacing the living room, biting his nails as he waits for Luke to come home, although having been home for an hour he was so nervous that he hadn’t even changed out of his work clothes yet, only discarded his jacket, so he didn’t get too hot.
His eyes darted to Luke when he heard the front door, turning to wait for the other to come join him in the living room.
“Ry? Is everythin’ alright?” He cast what he hoped was a reassuring smile before grabbing hold of Lukes’ hand and dragging him to the couch where he motioned for him to take a seat. “You’re kinda freakin’ me out now Ry”
“I need to tell you something” He looked up at Luke who only gave him an expectant look, waiting for him to give him whatever news he had to share. “You know I was sick last month?”
“Yes” The word was long and drawn out as if during that time Luke was concluding what he had to say.
“Well, the truth is I’m still sick, kinda. It’s nowhere near as bad as before obviously, but every now and then it just sorta creeps up on me and makes me want to throw up my guts”
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“I didn’t want you to worry”
He felt comforted by the soothing smile Luke gave him before standing up, grabbing both of his hands and rubbing small circles with his thumbs “I’m always gonna worry about you”
He pulled his hands from Lukes’ grasp to wrap them around the taller man, standing on his tiptoes so he could bury his face into his neck “I’m scared”
He felt Luke place a small kiss on his temple before pulling him away to look at him “C’mon, let’s get changed and then we’re goin’ to the hospital”
He only gave a nod before the two of them headed to their room, both eager to get into more comfortable clothes before they could think too much about the implications of what going to the hospital might mean.
He was just in his underwear, tugging on his loosest pair of jeans when he noticed Luke looking at him, head lopsided as if confused by what he was doing.
“Ryan, turn to the side for a minute”
“Why?”
“Humour me”
With a sigh he turned so that Luke could view him side on, feeling himself getting more restless as time drew on and there was no sound from Luke. “Take a picture, it’ll last longer”
He’d expected to hear some witty retort from his mate but instead heard him walk over to him, looking up at him to see his eyes fixed on his stomach, unable to hold back his flinch when Lukes’ cold hand came to rest on his stomach.
“Fuck that’s cold”
“Shhhh” He crossed his arms above where Luke was now feeling his belly, letting the man perform his ministrations before finally pulling away from him. “Getting’ a little pudgy round the middle there Ry”
He quickly aimed a half-hearted slap at the older man, which was easily dodged, instead looking down at his own stomach and placing a hand to it, now that he did look he did have the slightest belly starting to form. Not surprising considering that his illness meant he hadn’t gone out as much he’d like, coupled with all the food he’d eaten supplied by his friends then it’s no wonder he’s gained weight.
“Because I love you I’m going to let that comment slide just this once, do it again and you can sleep on the couch for the rest of the week” Luke simply chuckled, giving him a chaste kiss on the side of his head before he finished getting changed.
Now self-conscious about his stomach he put on the loosest shirt he could find, which just so happened to be Lukes’, enjoying the slight growl he heard from his mate showing just how much he enjoyed seeing him in his clothes. Quickly donning a jacket, they made it out the room and towards their car, nerves rising with every decreasing mile between them and the hospital.
**********
“Thank you for being so patient, I’m sure you both must be a little on edge at the moment” The doctor tried to give them as reassuring a smile as he could before taking a seat opposite them, clicking through his computer briefly before looking back at them.
“You could say that” He was briefly aware of Luke rubbing his knee in an effort to comfort him, but he couldn’t stop the way his leg was shaking or from picking at his nails in an effort to distract himself.
“Right so I understand you came in here because you’ve been experiencing vomiting and nausea for over a month now?” He simply nodded at the doctor who quickly turned back to his computer “And you’re not on any medication are you? No suppressants or subscriptions?” Another nod and the doctor typed on his keyboard before excusing himself to leave the room.
“It’s gonna be okay Ryan” He looked over at Luke as if he wanted to believe his own words as well, he grabbed hold of the hand on his leg, squeezing it gently to comfort his mate who needed it just as much as he did at the moment.
They turned their heads when the doctor came back in, file in hand, who was quickly followed by a nurse pushing what seemed to an ultrasound?
“Well, I’m hoping I’ve got some good news for the both of you, your urine test shows that you’re expecting a child. I just want to do an ultrasound to make sure everything is as it should be and that it’s healthy, you can even take a picture home if you’d like”
He was shocked, mouth agape as he stared at the doctor in front of him who only smiled warmly down at him.
“But I can’t be. My doctor, he said…I thought…”
“If you would kindly lay down on the bed and show me your stomach I can show you that you’re very much pregnant”
He was somewhat in a daze as he stood up from his seat, Luke leading him towards the bed he carefully climbed and leaned back in, hand never leaving Lukes, his grip on it he’s sure must be painful but Luke showed no sign of discomfort, instead eyes fixed on him and the Ultrasound machine.
It’s not long before cold jelly is being rubbed across his belly and a moment later they’re looking at the dark images on the screen, both of them holding their breath as they make out the small figure on the screen, their child.
He swears he could cry at the sound of the heartbeat filling up the quiet room, his eyes unable to tear themselves away from the picture on the screen.
“So, would you guys like a picture to take home?”
“Yes” He looked to Luke, his voice hoarse and he could tell his mate was just as overcome with emotion as he was. He smiled brightly at Luke, happiness, and disbelief across his face which was reflected in the older man. Luke leaned forward slightly, giving him a chaste kiss before turning his gaze back to the screen, whispering promises in his ear to take care of him and their now growing family.
**********
It’s almost a week since they’d found out he was pregnant and challenging though it was they’d managed to keep it a secret from their friends, intent to tell them tonight. He both hates and enjoys how possessive Luke had become over him, baring his teeth at almost anyone who comes too close, even when Jon had come to visit them to see how he was doing, when he went to hug him he could hear was Luke growl quietly beside him, possessive hand on the small of his back.
Their house was quickly filling up with their friends and he can’t help but feel nervous about the prospect of telling them, his hand going instinctually  to his belly for comfort, a habit both he and Luke had quickly picked up and he had to make sure to keep in check so as not to give the game away too soon.
He’d made sure to keep Luke on door duty, greeting their friends when they arrived so that he didn’t try to start a fight when he’d go to hug his friends in greeting.
He decided to join a very pregnant Brock who was sat on the couch, eagerly listening to his pregnancy stories in preparation for his own, unknowingly his hand went to his stomach, a movement which didn’t go unnoticed by Brock, and yet he didn’t say anything.
Despite how warm it was inside their home he kept on the hoodie he was wearing in an effort to hide his slight stomach, which also served as a nice cover when Luke wrapped his arms around him from behind, chin resting on his shoulder whilst his hands went inside the hoodie pocket to rub at his stomach, easily keeping conversation with their friends who were none the wiser.
As the night went on they grew ever impatient to tell their friends, some of whom had loaded up the console to play some games and were quick to pause when Luke called for their attention.
Even as he heard the words from Lukes’ mouth, hand on his stomach he couldn’t believe that they were true, that despite spending his whole life believing he could never have this, along came Luke who blew everything he knew into dust.
As soon as Luke told them the news their friends crowded around them, ignoring the somewhat unpleasant look that Luke shot their way when they went to hug him and feel his belly as well. Brock especially came to give his congratulations, telling them to call him if they ever needed any advice, with a parting statement of how they were going to make great parents.
Now that the formalities were over Jon raided their cupboards until he found a bottle of champagne, pouring a small amount for everyone in various mugs and glasses, with the exception of orange juice for him and Brock, and a final cheers of congratulations. Soon after everyone returned to their previous activities, namely gathering around the couch to watch Brian and Tyler fight it out on COD.
They stood watching their friends in contentment, feeling Lukes’ hand link fingers with his own on top of his stomach and enjoying the comforting presence of his mate beside him, who leaned down to gently kiss him, taking their time to enjoy the kiss and ignoring the fake retching noises of their friends before pulling apart, ready to face whatever the future held for them, hand in hand.

Have you thought of an AU where one of the others other than Rachel got split in half during the starfish book?
“Great.”  Rachel crosses her arms, surveying the scene.  “So starfish regenerate.  And now we’ve got two Marcos: one dumbass and one psychopath.”
Shallow Marco (as Jake has mentally dubbed him, with a twinge of guilt) recoils, eyes filling with tears.  “Jake, Rachel’s being mean to me!”
Robot Marco (and Jake feels bad about that one too) speaks over his double.  “I’ve tested all eight of my most commonly used morphs, and my abilities remain intact.  Therefore, it’s only logical for my other half to remain here, and for the destruction of the Anti-Morphing Ray to resume on schedule.”
Shallow Marco bursts out laughing.  “‘Other half’!” he says.  “You called me your other half!  Like we’re married!”
Robot Marco turns to Jake.  “Anyway —”
“I wouldn’t marry you,” Shallow Marco says.  “You’re boring, and bossy, and short.  And Jake is prettier.  Not as pretty as Rachel, but sometimes she’s mean and Jake is usually nice.  I wish I had a nice smile like Jake.  He’s not cute, but he’s more like, like…”  He looks at Cassie imploringly.
“Jake’s very sweet,” she suggests.  “But we should probably get back to —”
“Ax!” Shallow Marco bursts out.  “Ax is, like, hot when he’s a human.  Like, really hot.  It’s like he, like, got Rachel’s hot nose but not that weird thing with her chin, and Jake’s shoulders but not, I mean, let’s be honest that his face is totally asymmetrical, and Cassie has hot potential if she was a guy, but only —”
«Anti-Morphing Ray!» Tobias practically shouts.
“Don’t worry, you’re hot too.  But also, like, only as a human,” Shallow Marco assures him.
“We drop a nuclear bomb in downtown Los Angeles,” Robot Marco says.  “While the yeerks are distracted by the fallout, we engineer an electromagnetic pulse to travel through the community center.  With the metal floors, it should generate sufficient amplitude to kill all the controllers inside.  From there it will be easy to walk in and destroy the AMR.”
They all stare at him in horrified silence.
Robot Marco bursts out laughing, a second too late.  “Kidding!  I’m kidding.  Jeez, your faces!  What, this guy —”  He makes a dismissive gesture at his other self — “Is the only one allowed to be funny?”
Jake sends both Marcos home.  Robot Marco at least seems to understand the importance of not letting Peter find anything out.  And Jake honestly doesn’t know what else to do with them.  After they’re gone, the others discuss the actual plan for interrupting the transit of the AMR.  However, there’s nothing else they can do tonight.  Jake breaks up the meeting.
That night, Jake is about to fall into bed to try and force sleep through the worry when he hears Tom’s voice call up the stairs.  “Hey, midget?  Marco’s on the phone, asking for you.  He sounds weird.”
Jake is fairly certain that he breaks Olympic speed records on his sprint down to wrench the phone out of Tom’s hand.  “Hi!” he says into the receiver, breathless.
“You know what’s funny?”  Shallow Marco — it has to be — giggles slightly.  “Being underground.  It’s all squishy and gross, but remember the moles?  That was hilarious!”
“Uh-huh.”  Jake is excruciatingly conscious of the controller watching him from ten feet away with raised eyebrows and infinite patience.  “Sure is.”
“Also it’s really scary here, and dark, and scary, and the other me scares me.  Can I please please please spend the night at your place instead?”
Jake’s place has hazards of its own.  He glances at Tom again, unable to stop himself.  “I don’t know if that really makes sense…”
“Okay.  I guess I’ll just call you back the next time I think of something…”
“Come over!” Jake blurts.  “It’s no problem at all.”
“Thanks!  You’re, like, the best.”
It’s almost too easy for Jake to push past Tom and go talk to their parents.  To say, “Marco needs to come over,” the taste of the implied lie bitter on his tongue.  He hates leaning into their compassion, playing on their cynicism toward Peter, but it also works.  Marco arrives within half an hour, thankfully by bicycle rather than by wing.
“Thanks for letting me stay over!” he chirrups at Tom, who answered the door.
The yeerk, apparently thrown by this, stares at Marco in silence for a second before mumbling, “yeah, whatever.”
“You know…”  Marco rests a hand on Tom’s forearm, staring up into his face.  “You have just the nicest smile.  You know?”
A look of dull confusion crosses Tom’s face, his eyes slowly blinking once, twice.  Then, with a shake as if trying to stay awake, he apparently decides not to dignify that one with a response.
“Okay!”  Jake swoops in, grabbing Marco by the arm to yank him upstairs.  “And we’re going to bed.  Good night, everyone!”
Marco blows a kiss at Tom as they go.
The next morning, it’s Jake’s mom who knocks on the door and says, “Sweetie?  Phone call for you.  It’s Rachel.”
Marco doesn’t move, a lump of covers and tangled black hair in the sleeping bag on the floor.  Carefully Jake steps over him and tiptoes into the hall to take the phone.  “Hi!” he says to Rachel, trying for a casual tone.  “What’s up?”
“I’m gonna kill him,” Rachel says through her teeth.  “Marco’s dumbass half called my house five times last night.  Five times.  The first four were all ‘ooh, Rachel, I can’t call Jake so you’re the only one who can save me from this noise I just heard,’ or ‘Rachel, I’m scared of yee— uh, yetis, will you defend me?’  The fifth one was a fucking booty call —”
“That’s ridiculous,” Jake says, “Shallow Marco’s been here all…”  Which is around the time his brain catches up to his mouth.
Dropping the phone, he sprints back to his room.  The sleeping bag flops over when he kicks it, not nearly enough weight inside.  Long black hairs — cut off near the root, tucked under the blanket — scatter out to float across the floor.
Shallow Marco wouldn’t cut off his own hair just to sell a ruse.  But then, Shallow Marco wouldn’t be capable of pretending to be his other self.  Robot Marco, on the other hand…
“Rachel.”  Jake fumbles to pick up the phone.  “Get everyone to the usual place, STAT.  We have a situation.”
«It would appear,» Ax says slowly, «that most of Marco’s more affective functions — emotion, empathy, temperament, and the like — have ended up in this half.  Whereas his missing double appears to be in possession of colder cognitive functions such as judgment and decision-making, and yet remains as defunct in social communication as this Marco is in long-term planning.  However…»  He shifts his back hooves, shrugging in an oddly human gesture.  «I am hardly an expert in human behavioral norms or psychosocial development.»
Shallow Marco bursts out laughing.  “You can say that again!”  He elbows Jake.  “Get it?  Get it?  He said ‘I am hardly an expert —’”
“Got it,” Jake says tiredly.  “Ax, what’s that tell us about where, uh, thinky-Marco is going?  And how do we stick him and feely-Marco back together?”
«Marco’s cognitively biased half would likely have very little concern for anyone other than himself.»  Ax glances around at all of the others at once.  «I’m afraid he may have left the war entirely.»
«Great,» Tobias says.  «So we’re all the way back to the first month of this whole fight, when Marco was looking to bail at every possible opportunity.  No offense,» he adds, glancing at Shallow Marco.
“Assuming he ran, where would he go?” Jake asks.  “Feely-Marco, did you notice anything about him?”
“Yeah!”  Shallow Marco straightens in indignation.  “Is that really what my hair looks like from behind?  How come none of you told me?”
“Tom,” Jake breathes.  The realization comes too late; he could kick himself.  “He acquired Tom.  Probably the only reason he came to my place at all last night.”
«That’s probably not good,» Tobias says.  «He might be off infiltrating yeerk meetings right now.»
“Not necessarily.”  Cassie pats a horse’s neck, the motion distracted, self-soothing.  “Tom’s also an eighteen-year-old.  A legal adult with a driver’s license, access to a bank account with Sharing funds, and the ability to pass unquestioned through yeerk security.  If I was going to grab someone’s DNA and run…”
“You wouldn’t steal another human’s identity to do it,” Rachel points out.  “I still think it’s more likely he’s off kicking yeerk butt, or at least trying to.  Could he be going after Eva?”
«Is it necessarily bad if Marco’s cognitively biased half is trying to advance the war effort?» Ax asks.  «He does seem cogent enough to avoid coming to harm.»
«Kinda depends,» Tobias says.  «This version of Marco’s apparently willing to morph humans when it suits him.  What else is he willing to do?»
“Drop a nuke on Los Angeles,” Rachel says.  “Fuck.”
“Is that what he’s doing?”  Again, Jake looks at Shallow Marco for help.
«Not to be the guy tripping over the elephant in the room, but…»  Tobias looks down, straightening a couple feathers.  «Marco’s the smartest person on this team.  And the best liar.  Right now, he’s working with a twelve-hour head start.  Whatever his plan is, we’re probably not going to come up with it in the next twenty minutes of brainstorming.»
“Right.”  Jake shoves to his feet.  “Then we’ll just have to split up and find him.  Ax and Cassie, Rachel with Tobias, and I’ll take Marco.  Bird morphs.  Check in at the clock tower two hours from now.”
Shallow Marco bursts into giggles.  “Morphing is so weird.  And gross,” he wheezes, laughing harder now.  “And dangerous.  We’re craz —”  He gasps.  “Crazy people.  And we’re all — All gonna die —”
Ploosh!
Cassie lowers the bucket, now empty, back to the ground.  Shallow Marco shakes himself off, dripping but no longer on the verge of hyperventilating.  “Sorry,” Cassie whispers.
“My hair looks just as good wet as it does dry, so it’s okay.”  Marco smiles at her.  He seems to have forgotten his near-panic.
“Right,” Jake says grimly.  “Let’s go.”
Cassie and Ax find him first.  Or rather they find the first unambiguous sign of his presence.  They agreed to head for the community center and mall with their known cluster of yeerk pool entrances.  Jake and feely-Marco are off checking out bus stations and car rental areas for signs that a guy looking like Marco — or a guy looking like Tom — left town for good.  Tobias and Rachel, who have the most experience flying, are canvassing a broad area which includes most of the town and surrounding woods outside of the area over the yeerk pool.
There’s a body lying facedown on the sidewalk outside the door of the community center.  Human, male, obviously dead from the angle of his neck.  Ax looks at Cassie.  She looks back at him.  Together, they tilt to land.
Ax demorphs, presses cursory fingertips to the man’s pulse point at Cassie’s quiet instruction.  Nods, confirming what they already knew.
Cassie takes the time to change to wolf morph.  They don’t know what they’ll find inside.  She and Ax walk as softly as they dare through the door of the community center, fur standing on end.  Cassie’s nose detects blood, fear, pain.  Human and animal and alien.
They pick their way through the silent lobby.  The electricity is out, leaving half-dark.  A second human sits behind the desk, head lolling back, bullet hole between her eyes.  The room is otherwise deserted.
There are two corridors ahead.  Ax tilts a stalk eye at Cassie, inquiring.  Every one of her instincts tells her that the way to safety is straight ahead, where she can hear only soft traffic and smell only old furniture polish.  She walks down the left-hand corridor, with its terror-smells and echoing screams and hint of kandrona on the air.
The next body they find has no head.  Cassie sniffs briefly at the wound, again confirming her suspicions.  It’s clean and unburned, stinking of blood and death but not of ozone.  Not a dracon burn; a blow from an andalite tail blade.  Visser Three is here.
They don’t stop at the next seven or eight bodies, all killed by Visser Three.  Cassie glances up at Ax; he looks as confused and troubled as she is.  Did Marco manage to sow discord in the Yeerk Empire this quickly?  Is this a completely unrelated incident?
Neither one of them has said a word since before they landed.  Walking through a graveyard as they are, no words seem necessary.
It’s inevitable, really, when Visser Three himself looms out of the darkness ahead.
Cassie drops to a half-crouch, teeth bared.  Ax’s tail blade snaps to the ready.
Visser Three… stands there.
Stiff-kneed, every hair standing on end, Cassie takes another step forward.  Another.  There’s pale-blue blood pouring out of Visser Three’s nose, his ears.  His left side — stalk eye, arm, both legs — is strangely limp.
«Ax?» Cassie asks, voice too high-pitched, hoping for answers.
Ax takes two more steps toward the visser, not lowering his tail blade.  Visser Three gives a sudden spasm.  The fur on his right arm shifts, becomes red and scaly —
Skish!
Ax’s tail blade has twitched faster than either of them can think.  Visser Three falls, dead.
Ax stares at the body for a long moment, chest heaving, tail twitching as if in an effort to clean it of blood.  Visser Three lies unmoving, and soon he is no longer breathing.
«Come,» Ax says at last, voice shaky.  «We need to find Marco.»
Marco himself is not far from the end of his ghastly trail of breadcrumbs.  He sits brooding over his fallen kingdom, a mountain of black fur and bloodstains amidst what have to be close to a hundred other corpses.  Some are hork-bajir, some human, several taxxon.
Ax gingerly steps forward.  «Mar—»  He stops, staring.
Cassie slinks around his far side, watching Marco, a snarl still in the back of her throat.  She sees what drew Ax up short, and sits hard on the ground.
The body resting at Marco’s feet is one Cassie only knows as Visser One.  But she knows enough to recognize the woman, to see the same full lips and dark curls and high cheekbones that Cassie associates with Marco himself.
Unlike everyone else in the room, Eva bears the clear marks of having been killed by a gorilla.  The small pistol still cradled in her limp hand wasn’t enough to save her, or Visser One.
«Ax.»  Cassie’s voice comes out strange, but she finds she can do this.  She can tap a deep reserve, take charge, when no one else can.  «Go find Jake and Rachel and the others.  Bring them back here, as soon as possible.»
«Will you… be all right?» Ax says.
«We’re going to be just fine.»  This time her voice is too gentle, bordering on patronizing.  Marco doesn’t react to her tone.  Ax just nods, and begins to morph.
During the half hour that Ax is away finding the others, Cassie bears witness.  She coaxes Marco into demorphing, and then she listens in silence to the dull recitation of his explanation.  How, once he’d had Tom’s DNA, getting into the yeerk pool itself was easy to do.  How he’d simply acquired a yeerk from out of the pool.  The next part had taken some doing, but after whispering and tracking rumor and observing the patterns of movement, he’d managed to be in exactly the right place at exactly the right time to shove Esplin 9466 out of the way — and slide into Alloran’s brain himself.  From there, it had all been so easy: executing half a dozen subordinates on the slightest excuse, bellowing contradicting orders and threatening death for all who disobeyed, claiming that there were traitors in their ranks who had to be eliminated.  Marco estimates that he has decimated the entire arm of the invasion force here in California, and that the carnage is continuing to spread even now.
“I had to demorph inside Alloran’s brain, in the end,” Marco says.  He and Cassie are both human by now, just two kids sitting among the corpses.  “Blew half his circuits in the process.  Shame, really, since he wasn’t even fighting back against me and he could’ve been useful.  But I suppose it’s one less distraction for Ax, so it’s more gain than loss.”
Cassie keeps her opinion of that assessment to herself.  She keeps it all to herself, even the tears that burn behind her eyes and the tension in the fist clenched at her side.  This isn’t Marco, she tells herself yet again, not really.  This is a half-person, lacking one half of all human nature.  Their Marco is himself entire.
“Speaking of distractions we couldn’t afford, I took the time to kill Tom as well.”  Marco shifts slightly, a careless leg propped against his mother’s body.  “Jake might be upset at first, but he’ll thank me in the end.  It’s better for the overall strategy to have him out of the way, and Jake will see that soon enough.”
This Marco, Cassie thinks, is not half as smart as he seems to think he is.
Jake makes it two steps into the room and staggers.  Mechanically, out of sheer lost uncertainty, he starts going from body to body: checking faces, checking IDs, checking for signs of life.  Shallow Marco shoves past him, running for the center of the room.  He falls next to Eva’s body, keening from somewhere deep inside.
Robot Marco lifts his head up, watching his twin with what looks like idle interest.  “I remember what it was like to be half of you, to be frail and shrill and vulnerable.  Do you remember being competent and clear-sighted and monstrous when necessary?”
Shallow Marco (and yet there is nothing shallow about him, not now) lifts his head up to stare his doppleganger down.  His bloodshot eyes, his trembling lips, the soft sob of his breath… Jake has never seen Marco like this, not even after Eva’s first death.
“You see,” Robot Marco continues calmly, “it’s only a matter of time before the chee find a way to make us one again.  Morphing tore us apart, but I’m almost certain that it can’t hold us this way.  I got plenty done while I was free.  The war is won.  However, I’m starting to see that I need you almost as much as you need me.  Therefore, it’s—”
BANG.
Robot Marco jerks, mouth halfway open, and actually looks down at the bullet hole through his heart.  “You…”  He sounds genuinely surprised.  “You…”  He dies, still upright, between one breath and the next.  Jake sees it happen, watches the slow fall of his body.
Shallow Marco lowers the gun, resting it back into Eva’s hand.  “It’s funny, when you think about it,” he tells Jake.  There’s an edge of laughter — of tears — of something, catching at his voice.  “He didn’t think anything of me.  I don’t feel anything toward him.  It’s…”  Another sobbing breath catches in his chest.  “It’s hilarious, and…”
Rachel starts to move forward.  In an instant Marco (the only Marco, now) has whipped the gun back up to point at her chest.
“He killed my mom!” Marco screams at Rachel.  “Don’t you dare— He killed—”
Rachel holds up both hands.  She takes another step forward, because Rachel’s never had the good sense to be afraid.  “I know.  I know.  And I’m the last person to give a crap about that.  But right now, I just don’t want—”
“What, this?”  Marco whips the gun up, points it at his own head, and pulls the trigger.
There’s a faint click, but it doesn’t go off.  It’s empty.  Or jammed.  Or it’s simply not a semi-automatic.  Jake doesn’t know, and he doesn’t care, because Marco has time to look at it and laugh like it’s the silliest thing he’s ever seen, and then Rachel tackles him.  She tosses the gun clear across the room, wrestling both hands behind him, and pins him to the floor.
“I will,” she pants, “cause you severe bodily harm—” another gasp — “if you even think about morphing.”
Marco doesn’t answer.  He just curls under her, looking small and alone and very young.
“Okay.”  Rachel relaxes her grip a little, after a time.  “Okay.  Yeah.”
She looks up.  Her expression says now what?
Jake stares back, face full of I don’t know.
They’ve won the war, Tobias thinks, watching it all from overhead as if it’s happening to someone else.  If they haven’t won it already, Marco has just handed them the opportunity to finish the job.
One of the bodies curled on the floor is a girl can’t be any older than the Animorphs themselves.  One of the bodies has the face of a friend, of a part of them all.
Sure, Tobias thinks.  Yeah.  This is what victory feels like.  Sure it does.
Still.  They have a chance now.  To find a way forward.  To figure it out.  To find a way to live through the war, even if it has eaten half of their selves alive.

ACT OMEGA PART 10
THE 26/10/16 UPDATE
WOOOOOOO DOUBLE FUCKIN DIGITS YO. This is fantastic. So last time we left off, Dirk and Jake were gay and dumb. Now we are getting into the most anticipated interaction yet, Rosejade. Listen you people, you have no. idea how much I ship Rosejade. It ship it a l o t . . . Oh man it’s really cute. BUT Um YEAH LETS READ IT.
Tumblr media
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Jesus christ this is too cute. Jade is so fucking happy to see Rose aaaaa.
And Rose is just like “jesus jade dont knock me over”
ROSE: -Oof. JADE: nice to see you rose!!!
YES. YES it is.
Tumblr media
Oh my god help its too cute. I love their droopy lil pajama sleeves, it really makes this so much better and im not sure why.
ROSE: (... Nice to see you too, Jade.) JADE: bark!
Goddammit. Ok its clear I have a problem here, Jade is too fucking cute.
Tumblr media
Alright thank goodness, those cute detailed panels were a little too much for me. John’s creeping in the background, and Dave’s hanging out with Karkat. Jade doesn’t seem happy?
JADE: (oh my god im so sorry) JADE: (i cant believe i just did that!) JADE: (thats so embarrassing...)
Jade shut up it was cute.
ROSE: (No harm done.) ROSE: (It’s endearing, in a way.) ROSE: (Though perhaps the charm might simply be a patented Jade Harley trait.)
God, YES. Now Rose is complimenting her, and its probably in a platonic sense considering she has a girlfriend but JEEZ I ship it.
ok I hope my shipping of this doesn’t come off as annoying.
JADE: ..dawwww! :) ROSE: (But you might want to keep your voice down.) ROSE: (I’m not sure why it’s become so quiet, but I am perfectly willing to preserve this lull in activity.) ROSE: (Especially in order to sustain the pleasant conversation we’re currently having.)
Yes it is very pleasant. Very very.
JADE: oh ok! JADE: whoops JADE: (i mean) JADE: (ok) ROSE: (Now that our vocal chords have been successfully wrangled, we can get right into the thick of it.) ROSE: (It seemed like you had something to ask me when you approached.) JADE: (oh um yes i did!) JADE: (but im kind of unsure how to ask...) ROSE: (In moments like these, I think the best advice I can give is to say “fuck it”.) ROSE: (And do it anyway.) JADE: :o
great advice Rose. NOW Jade, what did you have to ask? It’s probably gonna be something extremely platonic and irrelevant to my ships, but you know what I can dream.
JADE: (well geez when you put it that way!) JADE: (heh...) ROSE: (Well?) JADE: (oh right yeah) JADE: (soooooo)
hrnK help
Tumblr media
Oh. Right, it’s the Earth. So what did you need to ask then? What would Rose know about the Earth?
JADE: (i was wondering what you thought we should do about the earth!) JADE: (john said that taking care of it is supposed to be my responsibility) JADE: (and looking at it right now... isnt it a bit more uh) JADE: (watery, than it should be?)
Yeah, it is quite watery. this is the post-scratch earth I believe, so that would make sense. I think, at least. I never know with all this time shit.
ROSE: (It certainly looks that way. It's just another unfortunate consequence of the scratch.) ROSE: (Though I think it might be a slight improvement over the barren ball of basalt our earth became after that cataclysmic meteor shower.) ROSE: (We’ll just have to make do.) JADE: (so thats it then?) JADE: (we just) JADE: (give earth an orbit around a new star or something) JADE: (and find an island to live on?) ROSE: (That does seem a suitable course of action.) ROSE: (We might want to do something about all that ocean, though.) ROSE: (At the very least to make the planet somewhat more aesthetically pleasing. Sprinkle a few continents here and there, you know.) ROSE: (No offense, but one measly island will doubtless get boring after a while.) ROSE: (Let alone be capable of housing what will hopefully one day be a thriving multi-species civilization.)
Oh yeah, there’s gonna have to be a lot more land for all that LIFE. Do they have a way of making more land though? It’s probably not gonna be a problem, it’ll just be interesting to see how they do it I guess.
JADE: (hehehe!) JADE: (i guess youre right about that!) JADE: (although...) JADE: (i kind of wonder about all of our planets here in the medium) ROSE: (What about them?) JADE: (i went through all that trouble to bring them here, and now were just gonna leave them behind?) JADE: (why dont we bring them along?) JADE: (personally im a little attached! :P) ROSE: (Personally, I would rather not.) JADE: (aw) JADE: (well why?)
But Rooose, your land is so pretty! How would you just give that up?
ROSE: (They’re essentially just an overly grandiose and complicated puzzle designed for preteens, presented as personalized celestial bodies.) ROSE: (Some of them even have giant snakes inside them. Ew.) JADE: (pfffft)
pfffft. Those snakes were awesome. And even if they are just a puzzle, that doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate what they are aesthetically! I mean, come on Rose. You gotta stop resenting things for what they’re supposed to be!
JADE: (wow rose i sure did miss you a whole lot)
8D
JADE: (you always have such a smart and funny way of putting things!) JADE: (but will the denizens really still be there if we take them with us?) ROSE: (It was a joke, Jade. One of the many that I dole out on a regular basis, as the shrewd yet whimsical person you say I am.) ROSE: (They’ll likely vanish once we exit the game for good, whether we bring them through to the new universe or not.) ROSE: (They’re game constructs. I can’t see them serving much purpose past the end credits, so to speak.)
Wellll, I don’t know about that! I mean, yeah, they are game constructs and all. But like all the consorts, I think it’s safe to say they’re sentient as well! Sooo... Hm. Why would Jade’s Denizen have wanted her to take them all in the first place? I mean, to save them from Jack I suppose, but what’s the point if they would die from the big “your winner” screen at the end anyways?
JADE: (oh... well that makes me wonder) JADE: (what about the sprites? theyre game constructs too right?) ROSE: (That is a decent point.)
That IS a decent point. I dont wanna lose Jasprose or Davepeta.
Also. Has anybody wondered if there could be a Jasprovepeta^3? Because THAT, would be pretty great.
ROSE: (The kernels, at the very least, are absolutely nothing more than game constructs. They are a core mechanic of the game in their relationship with the maturity of the battlefield and the power of the black and white monarchs, and they don’t even have consciousness.) ROSE: (The sprites, however... well.) ROSE: (I’m not sure.) ROSE: (It’s highly likely they’ll be able to continue existing indefinitely, all things considered.) ROSE: (Though ultimately, it’s up to them whether they’d like to take a stab at life beyond Sburb.)
Well I dont see why they wouldn’t! Aside from maybe Erisol.
Tumblr media
Pfft
ROSE: (Hopefully at least ONE of them will remain here.) ROSE: (Far, far away.) ROSE: (Never to be seen again.) ROSE: (Or be mourned.) ROSE: (At all.) ROSE: (Ever.) JADE: (um???) ROSE: (Nevermind that.)
NO dammit, Jasprose cannot stay behind. She needs to continue to exist and be part of this story because she’s greAT! Though she did say she was no longer interested...
Tumblr media
JADE: (okay well) JADE: (im still kind of unsure about all this...) ROSE: (We’ll figure it out, Jade. There’s really not much to worry over.) JADE: (well... what about uh) JADE: (repopulation?) ROSE: (Like I said. We’ll figure it out.) ROSE: (Some ectobiology will likely be involved.) ROSE: (Which we will all be able to discuss as a group when the time comes.) ROSE: (Rather than right this second.)
Something wrong Rose? You’re kinda seeming a little impatient.
JADE: (um...) JADE: (rose, im sorry, i dont mean to make you mad)
Oh, Jade noticed too
ROSE: (I’m not mad.) JADE: (you seem a little mad!) ROSE: (*sigh*)
Out with it, Rose. Tell us what’s going on in that brain of yours.
JADE: (i just really want make sure i do my job right) JADE: (im supposed to make sure we all have a proper place to live!!) ROSE: (You’ll do just fine, Jade. You’ve always done your best at every task you’ve tackled, and what small miracles you can accomplish with hardly any effort are a reflection of how truly capable you are. We all have faith in you.)
Oh jeez.. Is it just me, or is Rose kinda seeming resentful towards Jade’s achievements. I hope that’s not the case.
JADE: (thanks, but...) JADE: (is everything okay?) JADE: (you dont sound all that enthusiastic) JADE: (did i do something wrong?) ROSE: (No, no.) ROSE: (This is all me.)
Come on rooose, tell us
ROSE: (I missed you Jade, I really did. But seeing you again now brings back unpleasant memories.) JADE: (oh) JADE: (you mean like your mom...?) ROSE: (Less the incident itself and more the horrifically immature child I behaved like back then.) ROSE: (Never was my childishness more apparent than with how I treated you.) JADE: (what! what do you mean?)
Hmm... thinking back at it, Rose sort of did treat Jade as just this object of mystery. Dave was always suspicious of her too, but Rose was seemingly always trying to point out when Jade said something that didn’t add up.
ROSE: (I was never a very good friend to you, Jade.) ROSE: (There were, and perhaps still are, some things about you that made me feel...) ROSE: (Insecure.)
Hmmm again.. I could understand insecurities in the past, but now Rose is practically on the same level as Jade. Is it a personality thing? because that doesn’t seem likely.
ROSE: (And, well. I was very petty, and allowed myself to wallow in jealousy while shoehorning you into another of my many imagined rivalries.)
Oh, damn. I guess I should have suspected something like that, considering how competitive Rose really can be when it comes to just about anything.
JADE: (you were jealous?) JADE: (of me???) ROSE: (You were bubbly and cheerful. Genuinely likeable, unlike me. Legitimately smart, where I more often than not felt the need to pad my intellect with random facts I learned on the internet. You had a multitude of talents and seemed to be able to do almost anything with hardly any effort.) ROSE: (Not to mention, I was under the impression you could see the future.)
DammIT, this is a large part of the reason I wanted them to interact. there was so much misunderstanding between them before, and once Rose finally knew how Jade did the things she did, it just went.. unmentioned.
JADE: (oh yeah... ugh, i thought i was soooo smart :\) JADE: (just thinking about all those dumb vague hints i used to drop makes me cringe!!)
I mean, it’s not like you didn’t always do what was best for your friends. Come on! You gotta feel a little smug when you understand all of the complicated bullshit about sburb. Even though you didn’t, in the end. you still thought you did. Plus you were 13. Nowhere near as mature as you are now. Which I suppose can be said for everybody, really.
JADE: (i totally get it, rose. im really sorry!) ROSE: (Please, don’t be.) ROSE: (Without the haze of envy blotting my vision I can see you for the charming, likeable, caring girl you really are and always have been.)
AGh, dammit this is putting me back into shipping mode nO!
ROSE: (I’d like to think I’ve done at least SOME maturing over the last three years.) ROSE: (Now I’m the smug one with clairvoyance. My, how the tables have turned.) JADE: (welllll...) JADE: (you were always a LITTLE bit smug :P) ROSE: (Oh, only a little?) ROSE: (You flatterer.)
fuCKINg. KISS.
Ah, shit. thats the end of their interaction. NEXT UP, we goooot... Calliope and Jane! Sweet. And as it seems to be the pattern we are following, we get a sneak peek at their conversation in this update.
Tumblr media
JANE: (Pssst!) JANE: (Callie!)
And that’s it. ALRiGHT, sNEAK PEEK OVER.
This was a really fun Rosejade conversation though. We got to learn more about how they felt about eachother in the past, and how those feelings have changed since. And not to mention, some plot details on the plans for the new Earth.
And since I still suck at ending these things, ten parts in, ill seeya next time. might be today again, whon knows. maybe ill go for 5 updates in one day.

Analysis/Breakdown of 'Always BMO Closing' Hello, hello! My breakdown/analysis of 'The Wild Hunt' was quite successful yesterday, many of you appreciated my thoughts of the episode. So let's continue with the next one! Now, I'm gonna tell you right now: 'Always BMO Closing' doesn't have a whole lot to it. Oh, it's a fun episode! Don't get me wrong; but it doesn't have a lot of meat to it. There's still something that I could talk about, but not to the extent of the rest of this set.But enough of that, let's just get into it.Always BMO ClosingCan I just say the title card for this episode is kinda unnerving?I really like the opening scene with Finn and Jake goofing around while having breakfast. Know why? Because it's just the two of them finding amusement in something so incredibly mundane - I can't help but think back to the early seasons, where Finn and Jake were a lot wilder, and how much they've grown and mellowed out now. Compare this scene to the breakfast scene in 'Her Parents', and you'll see how much they've changed. This is emphasized by the lines underneath Jake's eyes - emphasizing his older age. It's cute seeing Finn and Jake feeding into BMO's dress-up/imagination games. It's been said many times in these later seasons that they now see him as "like [their] son" or a baby. The little celebration they have set up in the third act, along with Jake's hilarious dialogue there, further hammers this in.Doubly cute that Finn and Jake are happy to see Ice King bonding with BMO. Again, I'm just reminded of how much their perception of him has changed. Jake especially, like with Marceline, took a lot longer to warm up to the IK. It's been clear their change in treatment of him has changed in the later series. Despite all his craziness, we and the characters themselves know that Ice King, in truth, just wants friends - people to hang out with. We see our characters facilitating this desire in a few episodes, so it's nice that we see how treating him like a friend as opposed to an enemy is the right way to deal with Ice King. And for those of you who don't remember, Ice King is a great playmate for BMO from what we saw in President Porpoise is Missing. He's crazy enough not to question the imaginary stuff BMO does.Ice King claims his body talks to him. I wonder if that's the crown or he's just insane - either one is applicable, really."Can you believe this weather?" as opposed to "How about the weather today?" I've always liked the way BMO talks and butchers the English language. As a machine he probably has no concept of these sayings and how they are supposed to go - but in his efforts to play a role he just says what makes sense to his mechanical mind.A line he says in this episode, "These are selling like red hots," instead of hotcakes. Red hots don't really make sense (it's a powerfully spicy cinnamon), but it has "hot" in the name and that makes more sense to BMO than hotcakes - which people don't sell in Ooo, nor call pancakes. Writing dialogue for BMO must always be fun. It's quick but Ice King's got this great grin when BMO puts the apple pie in his coat. What's hilarious is I don't think BMO was giving it to him, he was just putting it away (bodies don't talk and all, remember? Plus he's in his imagination mode right now).I like Tree Trunks in this scene, and what they did with her. How, they make her seem so senile for buying a branch with a ton of money, when in reality it made a lot of sense. Tree Trunks, although she's a silly old lady, isn't outright stupid. She bought the branch so Mr. Pig would have a backscratcher, and let's be honest, they really don't need a ton of money. They seem to live pretty comfortably without having to use that roll of dollar bills (remember that Sweet P taking KoO's gold in Gold Stars was what made them expand their house). When we cut back to BMO and Ice King, there's a tree with a heart carved into it that says "TT + W" for Tree Trunks and Wyatt. After they pass by LSP, there's a tree with a television in its hole, windows, and a target with arrows in it on the adjacent tree. Is this perhaps the home of Stevie the Squirrel, #1 fan of Jake? Before they reach the ziggurat, we see the hills with furniture in the distance, where Finn and Fern played Rock, Paper, Scissors in Three Buckets.I wonder why Gumbald dug those two holes. Oh, wait! Now I remember! There were two, huge, dormant bombs lodged into the ground. And now they're gone. Oh dear.I have to say, this episode was great in feeling irrelevant and fun until they showed the ziggurat. I recognized the hills with furniture immediately though, and was filled with sudden dread. It was a great turn on its head for what would otherwise be another innocent BMO episode. When we first see the ziggurat, it has a staircase leading up to it and the surrounding cliffs were untouched. Now that is removed, there's passageways and divets scattered about the the mountains and it's covered in scaffolding and walkways. Gumbald's been busy the past month, and to me this emphasizes how he is all about utilizing the environment to advance his goals and resources, uncaring for the damage he's doing to them, or in this case, an ancient landmark. Finn may be an adventurer who raids these places, but he doesn't damage landmarks in such a way.The sentinel is Cousin Chiklay, I think. His body structure is the similar to this thing, and I think he's wearing that suit to hide his identity. The way he let's them in, vanishes, and then Gumbald comes in with an ax, I feel like the impression we're supposed to get, is they kill anyone who comes across their lair. They don't want anyone knowing they exist. Of course Gumbald let's BMO go, but he's obviously gone off the deep end. He could have easily killed this visitor and taken the teeth for himself, but, well, he's clearly mad. Some cool little tidbits of environmental storytelling in this place. At the front door, we see behind BMO a potted plant that's just beginning to go, with a trowel on the ground. At Gumbald's desk, there's a dead flower laying right there - and it was actually "alive," like it had a mouth and shit. So, someone, probably the aunt, is trying to keep the place alive in some way, keeping it look nice, while Gumbald is completely consumed in his work. Kind of like Bonnibel, eh? Except a much darker parallel that isn't for the good of people.Gumbald has unsettling tastes in decor. He has this garish furniture symbolizing a ram, or an ibex, and a dismembered statue of a man and woman. I don't want to get super analytical about that statue, it could very well be just a piece of decor, but given his goals it feels like this echoes his plans to rip his enemies apart: Finn and Bonnie.Rams symbolize leadership, determination, and action. All of these relate to Gumbald pretty well. They are also a symbol of Satan - also pretty accurate.I like how it's Ice King who worries for how Finn will feel about losing his teeth, but BMO only cares about his game. The teeth were obviously very important mementos for Finn, and BMO sold them without much care. This calls back to that subconscious fear BMO had in his nightmare from Orb - how, he sees himself as AMO, selfish and hurting Finn and Jake, but they still like him. This isn't the first time BMO's caused trouble for the boys because of his games; I don't think we'll get this addressed, but it could be building up to finally confronting this issue. Because now we have something that can't be fixed.I like how Jake thinks for a moment, acting as the mediator to keep everyone calm and think of a rational way of solving this. Cloudy really changed my perception of Jake after I first watched it - really showed that his "cool older brother" persona, while genuine, is just a covering for an individual who's wise and perceptive, even more so than Finn sometimes. Why does it suddenly get dark in the Tree Fort when the Baby Tooth Finns attack? That's so odd haha.Speaking of odd, what the blood is this? I loved how absolutely absurd the climax of this episode was - it felt like a spiritual callback to the early show, and how Bubblegum would make zany scenarios out of a miscalculation. So, judging from these things, they're supposed to kill Finn and replace him: they bite everything (like toothing babies) and one tried climbing inside his mouth. Gumbald intended for them to be grown, had they not come from baby teeth.I think he tried cloning Finn, but because he only had toothy material to work with, that's what they came out as: pure calcium."These baby-smashing hammers are great!"So, something cool about Gumbald's outfit is he looks very lordly. He didn't wear this when he died, so it looks like this outfit is what he made and plans to wear when/if he usurps Bonnie. To close off here, let's talk about the title. "Always Be Closing" is a term used in, what else, the world of a salespeople. It's a strategy in which a salesperson is looking for new prospects, ways to achieve these prospects, and complete a sale - while at the same time being aware when they've lost, and when to cut their losses and move on to the next venture. Now, it's easy to just say, "Oh they chose that because BMO is a salesman here and the title made a pun," but I feel like making BMO's newest "prospect" a salesman was a deliberate choice. Take BMO's entire deal, replace the word "salesman" with him in my explanation of the phrase "Always Be Closing," and you'll see that all of BMO's ventures akin to a salesman's are his imagination games. He's always moving on to the next after each successful "sale," but now, here, he really donked up. Although they were able to handle the attack just fine, BMO still ended up selling something that had a lot of sentimental value. We've yet to see whether Bonnie finding out about Gumbald through this incident will yield good fortune or not. For all we know, Gumbald could have given this monogram'd cup to BMO on purpose, perhaps to lure Finn and Princess to him and into a trap. We won't know until the next set of episodes!Hope you enjoyed my breakdown of this episode - it's a fun one. Nothing very special about it, it's the weakest of the four to me but that doesn't mean it's bad.I'm not sure if I will be able to do Son of Rap Bear tomorrow, but definitely Thursday if you don't see it then. I've been busy enough today as it is - I finished this across three separate sessions. We'll see.Have a nice day/evening!
