Someone sent an ask about green and black beetles and it got me thinking about DC's Martians' designs because of how I designed blue beetle and the fact that green beetle is martian.

I have lots of beef with american alien concepts (xenomorph too but less for various reasons) especially intelligent alien species' designs. Yes, i understand the audience needs to empathize with our alien heroes, Cameron, but then they stop being alien. Aliens don't need to be appealing visually, psychologically or socially to us at all, if you are intending to write them seriously.

But of course, all this applies only if you want your writing and design to be realistic or close to reality.

I have several noted points about DC's Martians I'd like to question and or correct in my design, I'll be going off of young justice's martian designs because those are the least human canon designs of them and the most interesting ones. (They can mostly be seen at the beginning of season 4 of YJ) here's the green beetle without the suit and miss martian for reference:

In the show martians are shown to not only have a variety in color but also body type (in some places) which is rare even in an animated show with just humans so big kudos for the animators on that, big fan.

AND martians have webbing between their fingers, arms and torso in this design which could point that they were a water dwelling species in the far past, so also a very big fan of that.

To the redesign:

I had a few ideas.

First I got rid of the teeth on the outside and turned them into a beak because that would be the same thing. Proportionally they are also quite different from the original.

I have some issues with martian abilities. The density shifting is ridiculous (leave it to the ghosts who can bend reality) flying would be unnecessary with the gravity on Mars, there shouldn't be a reason why they could do that. Telekinesis too, for what? What would be its purpose? For survival? They would have found a way without it and otherwise it is physically impossible. *huff*

But some are forgivable, like shape shifting and camouflage if you don't have bones which i solved and telepathy which could just be a very specific frequency only they could emit and hear, that could be adjusted depending on who they were speaking with (with the reading thoughts bit just make them loose the ability to lie, problem solved.) Of course that would also mean their vocal cords wouldn't be made for human speech, but that technology can solve.

The weakness to fire could just be because Mars is also a lot colder then earth.

Our biochemistry should be similar enough tho, carbon based n' all. @wazzappp i thought maybe you would want to see this :>

I painted some of the most iconic large macaws known for their gorgeous, colorful plumages. I've always loved these birds and used to draw them a lot as a child. It was time to try that again! I think they look majestic in flight, so I wanted to paint them wild and free. It would be even better with a huge flock, but unfortunately all macaws are (some more than the others) endangered in the wild, so it felt sadly fitting to draw each one alone. But I'd imagine there are a few around, flying just out of sight or sitting on the tree branches nearby.

In theory, a reference tool for myself so that in the future I can more easily draw my and my friends' little guys getting up to shenanigans together! In practice, drawing height charts continues to be its own reward for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ They're in undies and mostly in a boring symmetry-tool neutral pose because it was only meant to be a rough height ref, but then I also colored it because I was having fun and I like coloring 😌 Only the first four are mine; all the others are various friends' OCs (and one NPC)! ALSO none of my other friends have A Tumblr Presence but Pepper, the sorcerer at the end, belongs to my friend Socket!!

He was a favourite of mine for a while haha #He was retired after losing in a bloodsport comic many years ago so it's been a while since he's been around!#He looks the same to me lol #He's an original species I made at the time so he /was/ designed with my preferences and sensibilities so I guess that makes sense but hm #I kinda expected him to look a Little different lol - I'll just chalk it up to not having been around as my style grew and changed #Defaulting back to his references! Sure lol #He is still a cute lad :) I never really got into his backstory hugely but I know he's got a huge phobia of fire #His face and hands were caught in a fire that ended up killing his parents and permanently scarring and sealing his mouth shut :P #But he ended up being psychic so he could talk and move food as he needed without needing to get cut open so it just - healed like that #It sounds a little different when he speaks psychically but he's not mute! He can only make Sounds with his chest and throat #You can see I was like ''Isn't he self-conscious?? Here have a scarf'' in drawing him again haha - their species is proud so maybe not!#Ruby was designed by an artist I was a fan of and caught a request stream ages ago hehe <3 Ty as always to CuddlesandHuggles ♪#I love Ruby! She's super pretty and Nequam loves her and she loves him <3 #And then there's the outfit swap lol look this time it was because Papyrus' outfit genuinely reminded me of Neq's!#Red cape/cloak/scarf - red gloves - high boots - white with gold trim! That's both of them!!#Nequam is much beefier lol and I gave him the fabric-over-the-bones look which ended up being cut through anyway lol #This species always shows off their crystals - it's uncomfortable to cover them - so there's holes all over anyway! Haha #Papyrus looks cute in whatever but hghhh he looks especially cute in a hooded cloak!!#The gloves were what really sold it for me haha - everything else was a very happy alignment but red gloves! It’s not off the table that I really just don’t understand what makes a “good” horror movie and what the genre is supposed to be about. Because on the other side of the coin, I watched Vivarium (2019) like a year or two ago, and while like arguably that’s more sci-fi/psychological than horror, it really stuck with me. I will just be sitting around on any given normal day and think about Vivarium and be like god damn, what an incredible movie. Come to find out it’s got godawful reviews, the enthusiasts and the critics say it’s trash! I don’t care I’ll keep watching that garbage

#everything about it is so different than anything I’ve ever watched down to like set design #the only criticism I agree with is it could’ve been cut down in a lot of places and maybe done better as a short YouTube film but idk #the other big criticism is that it’s too on the nose with the metaphor to the cuckoo bird but like #whatever #then in the same review not two paragraphs down those guys will be like well they didn’t explain anything to us about the alien species #OK #that’s the scary part!#that’s the intrigue #do you want it all spoonfed to you or not #I think watching it as a mom adds another element of eerieness maybe the film bros don’t get #justice for Vivarium (2019)

#i remember at first thinking maybe she was a character for frontiers #since leaks for it were describing a ghost/ai girl but that ended up being sage who is clearly a completely different character #and then i was like maybe shes a character from an upcoming idw sonic story.#but . that video is almost 2 years old now and no sign of her anywhere #new characters for idw sonic tend to get announced a little while before their official debut but not THIS far in advance #if shes from a game idk why they would tease only her and nothing else for it that far in advance unless it got delayed/cancelled #so now im considering the possibility that maybe that was an early design for ariem from sonic dream team ?#considering its just a mobile game i feel like that episode of tailstube was posted far enough in advance #for them to not have her design completely down yet #but aside from similar face and pose they look completely different theyre not even the same species. so im probably wrong there #or maybe they just drew up a random new character and put it in there just to fuck with us

one of the things that particularly pisses me off about art discussions, either in how nowadays everything has to aim for more and more realism in art styles and even live action to be seen as "real art", and in dismissing more abstract styles of artwork as not "real art" and having no inherent worth, is that they explicitly do not consider realism an art style either. to them, realism is just a given of "good" art, not chosen but rather just default. which i hate, because you CAN pick realism as an intentional style and a purposeful choice to suit a narrative, and all this results in is no one noticing or understanding why you made that choice or why that choice works better than any other possible choice to tell the story you want to tell.

#all the care guide says is 'biomass'#like i like realism because i have a heavy focus on anatomy as a theme #on the body as something innately complex and with a lot of feelings to have about it in all its messy ugly states #im interested in all the complex ways the body intersects with its environment and with culture and with other people #as the outside as contrasting the inside or serving as a strange reflection of it #like im kind of going for a lot of merfolk designs to not be particularly visually different from each other #they have incredibly similar silhouettes and thats on purpose #i want all of their differences and visual traits to be things that they would find more prominent #but we would struggle to pick apart without learning about them deeper and committing these to knowledge #because thats so much been my experience with trying to tell different individuals of the same species of wild animal apart #and i want to use that as a lens to then discuss how humans would then interact with an entirely different sapient species #and what happens when you are someone who experiences that #of someone else not recognizing you as individuals like you do each other #of them not even trying to adapt or learn your differences #what damage it does when this happens to you #and how much the world opens up when someone actually does learn these little differences #but of course #no one else recognizes this because everyone just thinks realism is the default #realism cannot be a purposeful choice done for a reason #realism is just What You Are Supposed To Do and Unevocative Of Deeper Meaning

Do 1010 end up transing their gender after everything is settled in the FRAU?

Yes! They do! Not only do they trans their genders, they also get total makeovers to try and look as human as possible! Like with full silicone skin and other stuff that has been invented/developed in the cybernetic world. Actually that first drawing I made of a bunch of Blues had his later "human" design, or at least a first draft of the design.

They don't just change their looks and gender but also their names! I'll use their preferred pronouns to talk about them from this point on in the post, but otherwise I will keep using he/him when talking about them while employed in NSR since they identify as that during that time.

But when talking about their future selves/"human" selves I will use their preferred pronouns. (I will be interchanging their names depending on if I am talking about their past selves or future selves)

White chose the name Silver, as a way to connect to his color (they all did the color thing) and as a sort of reference to Neon (both elements). He kept using the pronouns he/him (unlike all other versions of him that use it/its or it/he). For the longest time he didn't really "believe" that someone could change their gender.

Yes, unfortunately, White was kinda transphobic because he had no idea what any of that stuff meant, was confused and angry, and even followed Eve's lead on how she treated Remi at times when she was angry. Thankfully he was taught more about how things are and learned to not be judgemental and a dick. He is AroAce and is unlabelled in the gender department.

Blue chose the name Sky and uses She/They pronouns, mainly She/Her. She started wearing sunglasses again for her eyes and chose to have very long hair. She also added purples to her color palette (because technically Blue put Purple's code into his own trying to save him but just ended up fusing their codes together. Blue has done a lot to fuck around with his code without Neon's knowledge).

They've been learning to embrace themself more and trying to make amends with everyone around them for all the mistakes they think they've made. They identify as nonbinary and pansexual.

Red went with Rosa and uses exclusively She/Her pronouns. She is probably the most like her OG counterpart except just a bit more shy/nervous. Her hair is also much longer and a bit wavier. She became the shortest out of the group and loves it because it allows her to hide away a bit more when she is overwhelmed.

She's a lesbian, like Zimelu and all other versions of her, and has tried dating other girls only for a lot of them to fall flat. She's been looking for a steady relationship but either gets rejected or dumped because of her awkwardness a lot (unfortunately she doesn't get with Celine because they moved away from her).

Yellow's full name is Sunshine but usually goes by Sunny. He goes by he/they pronouns and I think he is the tallest (Sky would have been the tallest but I doubt she'd actually have chosen that, most other verions of Blue/Purl end up the tallest though). He has stopped making AS MUCH trouble, still makes some though, and is bisexual.

They aren't looking for anything serious in a relationship, just messing around and experimenting. Identifies as a man, but still like using they/them pronouns a bunch and will wear feminine clothes at times (most versions of Yellow/Haym do not wear any fem clothes).

And finally Green chose the name Fern and sticks with he/him pronouns. Honestly he probably would even be okay with it/its pronouns if White hadn't made a huge bitchfit about them a few times. He doesn't really know what he is, or care to change that much. His hair is much shorter, kinda think it was shaved short and is about a month into growth. He also doesn't know his sexuality but it's most likely asexual and aromantic.

Honestly Fern still has a lot of healing to do before he is really going to be able to explore himself. Years of constant abuse, belittling, and forced shutdowns made him very depressed and inactive. So he is the least developed out of the group. The only thing that really gives him any joy is a small garden he keeps up with and sometimes takes naps in if it's nice out.

The Frenator on the left is Leitna, a former traveller from the Southwest arctic. She’s rather eccentric, and she owns a lot of animals. She’s obsessed with them (as per my brand, she has a medically-prescribed dose of autism haha).

The Nangata on the right is Neveya, a warrior from the Myag Cemiy (that’s her clan’s name). She’s rather quiet and docile personality-wise, but dear god she knows how to kill you in like a dozen different ways. And she might, the little goblin.

Drew something based on a statue of Aphrodite.

More specifically, the figure is a more sanitized/muted depiction in-setting of Shub-Niggurath using one of the sapient species’ designs as a reference point, ifevis. This is in-setting because ifevis have features humans would consider ‘goatish’ and the people of that planet allude to Shub-Niggurath not as a goat, but as an ifevis because of their different reference point. This specific depiction/avatar is alluded to as “Marasa,” among other names.

So, hopefully Tumblr doesn’t try to flag this for nudity because the breast out should count under the “artistic nudity” rule.

Something I find very interesting about the character design in Dungeon Meshi is that the artist clearly puts a LOT of work into drawing people who look like normal people and since we, the audience, are so starved for that in Popular Media(bcs the current trend is drawing men and women so differently it's like they're a completely different species) unless they have a beard or visible tits no one has any idea what gender half the characters are.

Like I keep seeing people think Kabru and Chilchuck and Thistle are women and at first I was like "haha yeah same" but when I thought about it I was like...nah they just look like normal dudes, I know men irl who look like that, we're just so used to Hyper Masculinity being forced upon all male characters and Hyper Femininity on the women that when we see characters who look like average humans we have no idea how to process it.

And tbh I'm honestly glad that this manga has not only given us normal looking women but also normal looking men bcs fr I didn't realize how rare that was until I was faced with it. Male characters really do get forced to perform the most extreme form of their gender in popular media because of toxic masculinity and it's nice to see something break the mold.

i wish there was some sort of official alternate reality thing where we see what sonic would’ve been like had he stuck with his prototype rabbit design, though i guess the superstars skin is a good start

i remember when the earliest details for sonic prime were starting to come out people thought it was gonna be like a dimension hopping sort of show where we visit a bunch of alternate universes that already existed rather than the stuff with the paradox prism. anyway i think if we had gotten that version of the show instead then a universe where everyone is in their beta design would have been really fun to see

on of my biggest pet peeves is how little design/art people actually try to research about phenotypical differences when creating an monster/making a character based on an animal. like animals from the same species can change sooooooo much!

take the very famous Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) for an habitat based change exemple!

first this is how they look living in the siberian arctic:

ultra fluffy dense coat, stocky limbs, rounder body and small ears for retaining body heat!

now look at how they look in the arabian desert (no this is not a fennec!)

pointy boy unlimited! very long limbs, big tail and ears for body heat dispersion, super lean built.

so when you are designing an animal or using it as a base for a character, try researching a bit more for potential subspecies!
