When Bleach manga finally returns in 2025, I hope we get a full Isane subplot. Flashbacks of her and Retsu. Her learning Unohana's strongest healing techniques, and/or struggling to master them.

We got to see Unohana passing her combat skills on to Zaraki, but she chose Isane to take up her healing techniques, too. There had to have been a story there--a torch that she passed, a spark she saw, a key to her life beyond combat.

Isane being a captain is so weird to think of. I mean there obviously was nobody who could match Unohana's healing or fighting ability to step into her place, but Isane is such a non-combatant that we don't even know what her zanpakuto does, Ichigo KO'd her before she could even use it.

I mean, the vast majority of the 4th division are generally non-combatants. Unohana molded her division to be one that does not fight. They heal.

Even former member Izuru could be considered easily cowed until later on in the manga.

Like, Isane is very much a product of the environment she was reared in professionally. She isn't especially non-combative for a 4th division member. Unohana is just an exception in terms of fighting ability within the the 4th. And it seems by her own design.

No one in the 4th division with considerable know-how in healing kido is going to be considered competent in fighting on the level that the other division's captains & lieutenants are, on purpose. In her own way, I think Unohana was also trying to ensure none of her pupils fell down the same path she did and exemplify the yearning for peace she and Yamamoto were feeling as time went on--they were kind of just waiting to be replaced.

At the same time, I wouldn't call Isane incompetent in battle. She has a great hold on kido (as do most 4th members). And getting KO'd by Ichigo isn't something I would hold against her. That happens to a lot of people lmao.

Especially, post-TYBW, I think she would make a great captain. She doesn't need to be a fighting power house in peace time. And I don't think Unohana ever had the intention of training Isane (or anyone else) up to be a war-time captain.

#i just don't think Kubo had a good handle on what he wanted her abilities to be #and never had the want or time to flesh something out compared to other side characters #I think Isane really showcases the hope Unohana felt for the future of the Seireitei #one where there would be no need for another Unohana #tfw your two prodigies may as well be nicknamed war and peace

Topical Headcanons

Oof, this is a hard one for me. I'm certain that there is some listing out there that gives a brief mention of her canon hobbies I could use to base my headcanons around, but I haven't been able to find it. I try to keep the basics of my Unohana close to canon, so take what I write here with a grain of salt; it's liable to change if I find something official that invalidates it.

So, with that out of the way, what would a woman like Unohana consider "a hobby"? Well, for one, I think Unohana would be a weapons enthusiast, especially if one factors Zanpakuto into the mix. I can definitely see her examining and perusing all the wonderfully weird weaponry that the Living Word has managed to put out over the centuries, to say nothing of all the myriad ways that Zanpakuto manifest. I think Unohana would get a real kick not only from learning just how zany it can all get, but also in figuring out how she could best utilize all of them in a real fight were she able to manifest them herself.

I also like to think that Unohana has a real knack for cooking, most likely having been inspired by Hikifune. Ironically, however, Unohana is best at cooking only the most unhealthy of foods. When I say that, I don't just mean cookies, candies, and confectionary delights. I mean deep fried deep fry. I mean artery-blockers. I mean literal heart-stoppers. The more unhealthy it is, the better she is able to make it. I dunno, I'm just a bit tickled at the twist on her typical capital-m Mom image.

Also, in the absence of any evidence otherwise, I also like to think that Unohana really, really likes to shop for clothes. Specifically, she likes to shop for outfits that she can synchronize with Isane. Isane is beautiful as balls, and Unohana will show the rest of Soul Society that no matter how many malls she has to empty to do it! The outfits she chooses are always flattering, but they really run the gamut from Nanao to Matsumoto in how daring they are.
