Who ya gonna call? (The DID/trans ep)
Ill be honest i was nervous to rewatch this one but turns out it held up better than i thought. I mean, the worst of it is that the DID person is the murderer but that was such a common tv thing back then for procedurals. Every one had to have a DID ep, even though, as Psych points out, its so exceedingly rare. I get it, its a fun concept, but yeah, don’t make them the violent ones when 9 times out of 10 they’re the victims of violent crimes. I will say though, Psych made sure to include they were getting the help they needed and they really didn’t have to.
But what a cool way to show it though, having the other personalities act like ghosts. It feels very poetic. And to have one personality trans is such an interesting layer on top of it. It really can’t get more complicated than that.
This episode also tells us so much about Lassiter! Hes trying desperately to win back his not-yet-ex wife its kind of heartbreaking. We’re starting Psych right at the beginning of Lassiters downfall. He gets separated, has an “affair” with his partner who gets reassigned because ppl found out thanks to Shawn, and i believe its later implied he lost the promotion to captain because of that affair. And then Shawn comes along and he’s solving his cases. I have to wonder though, since we see in this ep how distracted he can be when he has personal issues, if Lassiter isn’t necessarily a bad detective in the beginning but just going through some shit and missing things. It kind of makes me understand why he’s so hostile to Shawn in the beginning. Not that thats any excuse. Just because you’re having a bad day doesn’t mean you get to shit on other ppl’s. And it was fun to see lassiters and Juliets miscommunication. It was nice to see them easing into their partnership, and allowing friction, particularly:
Tumblr media
What was henry going to do if that kid just started wailing on shawn??? Honestly, probably would have tried to teach shawn how to hit back and would’ve got him pummeled.
Its kind of funny that in this ep Shawns all this guy believes in ghosts, hes crazy, when in later eps he’s so excited about aliens and bigfoot haha. I can only conclude Shawn doesn’t really believe in anything supernatural but definitely wants to. I think it would have been better if Shawn didn’t think the guy was crazy right off the bat but maybe had a stalker, or intruder. (P.s were the writers implying Shawn was right from the beginning and they were crazy, or was that just poor wording??)
Sidenote: Shawn just casually spoke german and seemingly understood her response. He probably simply knew enough to impress her, but still. He does this a few times i think in the series where he lets it slip how much he actually knows.

@dumpstersoul aight. lets have a little thing about Jamie and being aro-spec.
with Jamie's experience is that they don't know that theyre aro, they dont understand why they do or don't feel specific things, and they don't really get why that is. Complicated further is the fact that they are allosexual, its very easy for them to assume that physical attraction must be the same thing as romantic attraction, right?
and the thing is Jamie loves reading romance stories, they grew up with tales of courtly love and chivalrous knights, and spun away dreaming of what romance is supposed to be. Of how its supposed to feel. Expectations that, at some point, surely they will feel the same way?
and then they never did. Attempts to replicate or pretend or assume that okay, maybe these feelings must be it instead? if they just wait it out? everyone else seems to be able to figure it out, so clearly there must be something wrong with them?
All of this, in turn, bleeds into their writing.
Jamies stories contain a multitude of different angles towards romance. theres many typical explorations of romance in some of them, especially the adventure novels, but over time jamie came to be.... bored, with that.
Combined with their own complicated feelings towards relationships, it became a matter of curosity and exploration to lean more towards complicated and less healthy relationships in their stories. trying to push and pull at the concepts of feelings, of what makes character and relationships tick, what does it actually mean to 'love' someone in the first place
perhaps, if they push at it enough, eventually something will break, and they'll figure out what theyre looking for in all of this
and also, well, its just fun to write more complicated relationships

when you think about it it is kind of funny how we've been trying to explain to some people for ages that trying to understand the motives for some actions of a character doesn't mean we excuse them and now the same people don't understand the difference between 'forgiving' and 'understanding' as well

just saw people on twt getting mad that gale said a literal god wasn't good enough for him . i need people to understand that he didn't mean it like "I deserved more than a literal goddess" he meant that his actions were foolish and made it LOOK like he thought himself above one. that he should've been content with what he had, but felt he had to prove himself to her.
if you romance him he literally realizes that he didn't need to find validation in a god but within someone who understands humanity more than a god ever could.
please learn reading comprehension before making yourselves look stupid I'm so tired of this

When you backread through a fun conversation you had with someone for hours an angel gets its wings
#I was talking to my brother about Norman doors and I had fun in my UX class and he was telling me about demon cores and the trolley problem#in his class. AND I remembered to take my meds today so I can feel every cell in my body. i can feel the neurons rubbing together#and yesterday I infodumped about the specialists bullseye chart to crow and how it ties with witch hat atelier#WHICH I MANAGED TOGET THEM TK READ IM SO HAPPY. I MAKE SQUEALING GUINEA PIG NOISES EVERY TIME THEY TELL ME WHAT THEYVE READ SO FAR. AHH#i might not even be scratching the surface with witch hat there are so many themes i could not possibly fathom or go over my heasd#and thats what makes it so exciting there are so many spaces in between that you can fill with your thoughts and i. i#waves my hands around manically#for anyone interested in my insane ramblings. the bullseye chart is from are we all scientific experts now by harry collins#in my own words its basically saying everything we know about anything is a game of broken telephone#and it discusses how information gets lost in translation between experts and laymen including things that arent in control#one of the main points was how things that happen between experts are complicated including debates and findings#that you can only really understand thru research and experience in that field and cant be smoothly shared without it being reworded#and risking some of those key points. or even concepts that are hard to understand that cant be shared at all#like if you tried to tell me about how DNA works using words scientists are familiar with but i am NOT- i risk missing concepts that i need#to understand to know how it works on the level you understand. or i risk having it reworded and understanding it but not on that level#AND IT DOES TIE TO WITCH HAT THE WITCH AND NORMAL FOLK COMMUNITIES I PROMISE. ITS SO INTERESTING#anyway i spent hours reading back thru that conversation and i might as well admit it goes for almost every fun conversation i have#and it might be the 20mg of adderall in my body but i am in such a state of peace and love i have to verbalize it. ahh#yapping

hiiii! have you considered releasing tradewinds as a single purchase through a site like gumroad?
Hi anon!
So the reason Tradewinds was shelved and not published like 8 years ago, is because I couldn't find an Aboriginal sensitivity reader willing to read m/m with disturbing themes. I had sensitivity readers for the other side of things (like Matan and his heritage), but I kept either not finding anyone, or the one person I found took my $200 USD deposit and vanished and never spoke to me / responded to any of my emails.
As a result, I was uncomfortable distributing it anywhere broadly, even though I was relatively confident the novel isn't offensive, because I just don't know 100%.
I am a lot more confident releasing it via subscription as an exclusive novel, because the people who pay for subscription are often folks who are a) already used to my style of writing and b) generally know what to expect from me, vs. cold audiences who don't. I'm kind of kicking myself that I didn't realise that Tradewinds would make a great exclusive/paywalled release for subscription, because it means it's only ever going to find a very narrow bandwidth of readers.
Basically if I could release it for single purchase - as basically an ebook - I would have released it like 8 years ago, anon. And the reason I have actually released it this specific way is down to the fact that I'm just not really confident offering it for broader distribution.
That might change one day, if I happen to stumble across a sensitivity reader who is okay with my style of writing, who is reputable + has references (i.e. so I know I won't lose a fair chunk of money in the process, because that burned me pretty badly, not gonna lie). But until then, having Tradewinds be limited is the only way I'm comfortable releasing it at all.
Folks are more than welcome to sign up for one month, download the book (and read any other early access they want) and then leave. They can even just put 'I only wanted one thing and now I have it' in the exit survey so I know what they were there for if they want. Then it's still a single purchase (with some early access extras), and they still access the downloadable file. :)

There is this whole idea that flipping a two sided coin doesn't have a 50-50 probability. It's not a new idea by any means, but the explanation is if you measured the mass of the coin, the force of the flip, the temperature of the coin & of the room, the force of any breeze, wind, or vibration in the air as it traveled, and so on, you could accurately determine within a small margin of error what side the coin will land on every time, and if you kept those constant it would flip on the same side every time. And that idea is also KIND OF the explanation for the conclusion in quantum physics that there is no free will.
A lot of people hear that and either clutch their pearls, roll their eyes, or aren't interested either way. (I mean, when you say some shit like that you're just going to immediately turn off any interest most people would have otherwise had but I'm digressing now). We all like to think we make decisions and choices, and then amateurs who want to talk about quantum mechanics alienate everyone by saying it's not true: you were always going to make these choices with no chance to make the other one.
But what I said in the first paragraph is something-like (but not exactly) what it means when you hear or read that according to quantum physics we have no free will. That if we had an unfathomable device that has been measuring all the variables of every single particle that was expelled during the Big Bang, with an also-sufficient/also-currently-unfathomable algorithm to plug those variables into, all within a computer that could do all of the calulations for BILLIONS of years, we could compute exactly where every particle was going and where it would end up, including those that make up the stars and planets, that make up the ground and oceans, that make up the animals and plants, that make up your brain and all of the proteins and neurotransmitters. That if it could all be measured and an algorithm sufficiently built then the decisions you make are already determined by the ongoing relationships and interactions the particles that make up your brain had in the past and are having right now.
However, humans cannot measure that, they likely never ever will.
Anyone that tells me they don't like quantum mechanics because something something affront to nature blah blah "they" don't believe in free will, etc. literally doesn't know it's just a rescale of the coin toss description. You still believe coin tosses are 50-50 because you aren't going to measure the variables used to receive an answer, you can still believe in free will because you can't measure the variables used to determine the ultimate path of all particles; I mean, I wouldn't become a theoretical physicist if that meant so much to you but I'm not your dad, do what you want.
Edit: I know I described the science mostly wrong, please check out the replies and reblogs for others' corrections and feel free to add corrections of your own for mine and others' learning, thank you.

I hate to break it to the progressive/leftist crowd but you do realize that white women are and can be members of an oppressed class while also having white privilege right? Saying something deeply misogynistic about women but prefixing it with "white" (because that somehow makes it okay to you brain rotten fuckers) doesn't make you cool or progressive, you're still being a misogynistic asshole.

That comic someone made using the concept of original sin as a metaphor for AI art is so unnecessarily pretentious and overcomplicates such a simple thing.
It is absolutely NOT the same thing as AI art when you reference other people's art and use it as inspiration for your own as long as it's done with the effort of your own skill. The argument that AI learns in the same way is a moot point when THE PERSON USING THE AI is not the one creating or learning anything. There is absolutely a difference between a living human being using references and transforming them manually into their own thing, and a person using a machine to do the same because they can't/won't take the time to learn or hone their own skills. Where is the debate at this point.

This is literally nothing that I wasn’t trying to draw connection between in that one web weave post but god. Perceiving the threads connecting these characters.
Gwen for whom fatherhood and authority figure was conflated into one man, a man who at first chooses the role of authority over father. Miguel who fulfils the role of authority figure after this / “I tried to wear [this mask] the way you would want me to. And I didn’t!” <- paraphrased. Miguel who protects Gwen from her father’s choice to prioritise his role as an authority, only to fail to uphold the responsibility he has to her as an adult and mentor by reasserting his power as an authority, grappling for control over himself and how helpless he feels. Gwen’s father knowing what is asked of him as an authority is inherently incompatible with what is asked of him as a father, and upon reflection, unreservedly choosing fatherhood.

all of my students r autistic n like . all of them have the worst stories abt how they ended up in this situation etc it makes me so so so angry like how and why is the UK system failing autistic kids so much . repeatedly . do u not realise the problem is you and not the children ??
"autism isn't something to glamorise, so many people suffer for it" like yeah ok im sorry that you had horrible experiences as a child bc of your diagnosis . no one is forcing you to like being autistic . but the suffering induced onto autistic people (children especially) is one of the core reasons we need to talk about the good parts of being autistic !! it is so important for autistic people - all of them but especially those with learning disabilities - to know the "autism is essentially an incurable disease" narrative is so so horrible and that their neurotype is actually a wonderful thing. talking about the good aspects of autism also helps lift a lot of the stigma around us. providing an autistic perspective to the world is a wonderful thing do not try to prevent things from getting better !!

just now remembering how much Lessons in Chemistry resonated with Char while I was watching it, and for none of the actual narrative reasons that the show's drama followed along. it was, of course, the premise taking advantage of the clear but seldom romanticized intersection between cooking and chemistry; it was the details, such as: Elizabeth destroying her kitchen and renovating it to function as a chemistry lab and kitchen, her making coffee using lab - ware, her treating cooking like an experiment and her chemistry experiments like life-sustaining cuisine, it was her sometimes getting poor results despite doing everything "right" by the science protocol or recipe because sometimes chaos bubbles just out of our control.

Thinking a lot about Mary moving on…
I love how it was handled, for although while the ghosts talked about it a fair bit, I didn’t actually think the show would go there, and I think it was portrayed really well. It makes sense for Mary’s character development, especially given that she mentions in 2x4 that she ‘dreamed of the day when [she] would be sucked off’ which makes this a happy ending for her, but it still hurts so much, and I don’t think i have even fully accepted it yet.
I am a bit unsure as to whether her moving on was something that almost randomly occurred or whether it was due to the fact that she was healing from her trauma in a ‘unfinished business’ type way. I am leaning more towards the former just because of the actual timing of her moving on, although it did happen quite shortly after some huge character growth and development within the season.
I do love the thought that her healing and sharing her trauma and finding her voice led to her moving on, but the implications of that are very hard to accept, because it means that any growth or development of the characters could lead to their eventual sucking off, and that is so hard to think about. It implies that the Captain learning to let go and express his emotions and accept his sexuality will mean that he will move on, or Kitty coming to terms and accepting how her sister actually treated her and finding a new family in the ghosts leading to her moving on, and that is so overwhelming to think about because I really don’t want any more of the ghosts to move on. I know it is an inevitability with the actual rules set within the show, but I really love these characters and I would hate for them to not exist anymore.
If moving on is a more random process, which I am inferring it is given how it just *happens*, then it means that none of the ghosts will necessarily move on if they change and grow and develop, which is comforting because I really want to see them all learn and develop without the knowledge that all this change is bringing them closer to not-existing, because I feel like that means I can’t enjoy their character development as much, or appreciate how they are all growing as people. I want each ghost to personally grow, but also to be able to sit and exist with the growth without it meaning that they have to leave the world behind for good.
Mary was, in my opinion, the perfect character to move on, not only because of her amazing recent character development but also because of Annie, because Annie was her best friend in a way that none of the other ghosts were, and so in a way it felt right for Mary to go with Annie. Also while I am sure a lot of ghosts would like to move on (probably Robin especially, definitely not Thomas tho), Mary has explicitly stated her desire to move on, which makes me happy for her since she got her desire, even though it is terribly painful to watch. Being a ghost is it’s own specific form of torturous existence, but it also allows the ghosts another shot, and they have become a family together, and I really don’t want to see anyone else move on.
#i am feeling a lot of very complicated feelings about just the concept of moving on and i wrote this post to help me make sense of them a#bit so sorry if it doesn’t really make sense#bbc ghosts#bbc ghosts spoilers#bbc ghosts season 4#like I completely understand that moving on is probably what many of the ghosts want but it is so scary to think about#especially with my favourite characters - like Cap has had so much development and growth over the seasons and I really don’t want that to#mean that after he comes out he will move on because to me that cheapens the development if that makes sense#i would love for Cap to be able to talk openly about his sexuality and express himself fully#but not at the expense of his existence as a ghost#and that is applicable to all of the ghosts but I am thinking about Cap a lot because he has a lot of huge character development throughout#the show and has a clear path of development that we as the audience can see because he has three main issues that have been clearly defined#throughout the show (which are all interlinked to some degree) - 1. his inability to express and fully accept his own sexuality 2. his#difficulty letting go of the war and extracting himself from his role in the war and 3. his general repression of all emotions#i do think that there is enough evidence within the show for me to say that the actual moving on is fairly random because yeah mary moved on#after she was able to share her story and find her voice and all that but she actually got sucked off on a random morning and so did Annie#anyway yeah just thinking about it a lot because i have seen a lot of people talk about it
