Stingray manta ray potāto potato (I was one of those ppl that sent a stingray and said Mary whoops)

But while we are here allow me to educate you in the surface-level differences I know between them!!

Mary is a manta ray (left) where as a sting ray is shown on the right!

One of the most prominent differences you'll notice is size! Manta rays are HUGE while stingrays are pretty small! Manta rays can have a wingspan of over 20 feet!! Even the biggest stingrays are usually only about 6 feet at most.

Also, their shapes are totally different! Manta rays are darkly colored and have the appearance of "horns", leading to them getting the nickname of "devil fish" which contributed to and inspired a lot of Mary's design! (Also the heavy black + white coloring)

Another important thing to note is that stingrays are VENOMOUS! Manta rays are not and that was also a contributing factor that came into play when designing Mary! Because despite the nickname "devil fish", Manta rays are generally very "chill" animals. And like manta rays, I wanted Mary to have a devilish appearance while also being gentle and calm at heart.

Manta rays are also found in open waters where as stingrays try to stay close to the coast. Stingrays are bottom feeders, manta rays are filter feeders. (the inside of their mouths also looks like a cool skeleton, which I think perfectly fits Mary's goth aesthetic too!)

And don't forget!! Mary Anta is literally an anagram of Manta Ray! ♡

[Our next protean is inspired by my annual teaching my students about ecological succession, and the subsequent explanation that the reality isn’t nearly as neat as the textbook version. I like to think that these guys are why there’s always potatoes in European fantasy settings hundred or even thousands of years before the Columbian Interchange (I’m looking at you, Tolkien.

As a reminder, all of these protean species have names that are anagrams of someone thematically related. Can you guess who “anelgos” is?]

Protean, Alengos CR 6 CN Outsider (extraplanar) This creature has a serpentine lower body and a humanoid torso, and appears to be composed of leaves woven together. Its head bears a crest of foliage, and its face is radially symmetrical, like a closed bud. Its hands are thick pincers, from which structures like the interior of a flower emerge.

An alengos is the protean of ecological succession. As new land is created and fields are left to go fallow, they are colonized by plants. Usually, this occurs in a somewhat predictable, stepwise fashion, but alengoses are perfectly happy to mess with the order of operations by magical and mundane means. Alengoses often seed plant species onto new islands or new continents, and they were fundamental in the creation of the Spawning Stone in the Maelstrom.

Alengoses are more likely to fight on the ground than many other species of protean, as their signature ability, the entangling aura, only functions when they touch a solid surface. Plants spring to life and grab at anyone in the area, except for other chaotic outsiders and plant creatures. An alengos will typically treat entangled enemies as lower priorities while it lobs caustic pollen at those that are not entangled, or merely crushes them to death in its coils. In the wake of a combat, an alengos will often spend some time making sure that dead bodies are broken up into suitable mulch to accelerate decomposition and increase nutrient uptake.

The influence of an alengos can be a boon or a bane to mortal farmers, loggers and other people who work regularly with plants. If properly mollified, or if the whim strikes them, an alengos can create a miraculous crop, or bring novel and useful plant species to the attention of people. On the other hand, their favorite plants are typically considered to be weeds, and their transplantations are as likely to be invasive as they are beneficial. The alengos itself rarely cares one way or the other, preferring the riot of life over any consequence their actions might cause in the long term.

how I came up with Coheeh

I found out about an extremely small genre that I call “flat works”. They are stories that aim to teach about hypothetical worlds that have more or less spacial dimensions than us (think flatland or the planiverse). I wanted to make a story similar to this. Most of the extremely limited number of projects that existed were all horizontal instead of vertical, so I decided to make my project vertical. I’ve always liked the planiverse more than flatland, anyway.

In the Planiverse, the character “Yendred” is more or less an anagram of the creator’s name, “Dewdney”. I wanted to do something like this with my main character, but I didn’t want to use my name because of confidentiality, so I decided to look up names that meant flat. In the end, all I could find was the Japanese name “Kohei” meaning “wide and flat”. I was afraid to make a yendredization of this name because I was scared of being accused of cultural appropriation, so I decided to make Coheeh’s human friend Kohei and have him be Japanese. This was so it would be clear that I took inspo from a Japanese name, and I wouldn’t take all the credit.

anyway, just for your info, I like to call the act of turning a backwards and/or changing some of the letters and/or pronunciations in a word to make it sound more Alien. Like how, in bionicle, Jala’s name was changed to Jaller (well… that sounds less alien), Huki’s was changed to Hewkii, Puku’s was changed to Pewku (haha pewkus all over the floor), the game of Koli was changed to Kohlii- you know what I mean. I mean the reason for the change was to avoid a lawsuit, but hey, Potato Pohatu, amiright?

No cap, I was legit self conscious about how I sometimes take inspo from real words, some even Polynesian, but you wouldn’t notice. But, I have realized that I, a teenager, utilized real life words better and more respectfully than Lego, a multi million dollar company. Is that sad or what? What do you think about my naming techniques?

KHUX seemed to imply so hard that Player was reincarnated as Xehanort, which makes the whole post credits thing super confusing… if you cling to that. But it's actually simple if you accept, guys, I think we were wrong. Player just got reincarnated into blue robe character.

Xehanort is descended from Ephemer… only a few generations back. That implies things about the timeline and/or yoinking Xehanort out of the past shenanigans I had previously contemplated based on the difference between modern Scala and the Scala Brain is dropped in the end of KHuX, but that'll take its own post to unpack.

There are lot of unanswered questions that I will try to gather together in a seperate post, but most of them point clearly towards Missing Link or ideas that are going to be developed in the coming arc.

7 Days until Game Maker R:Evolution is released: My OS-tan re-interest

I remember losing interest on OS-tan after Neptunia Sisters Vs Sisters introduced Maho and Anri, the personifications of Mobile phones and Android/iOS operating systems respectively (though I prefer them being the Android and iOS/iPhone representation). This of course caused some coexistent problems with the Windows and Mac OS-tans, as it's stated that Maho's sister represents PC as a whole... which every version of Windows comes from.

Naturally this caused me to merge the OS-tan project into the Neptunia canon, even having CPUs based around operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS), but that would mean I would have to create individual CPUs based around specific operating systems (like Linux having several distributions like Ubuntu and Debian) and develop them all out once, which would create a bloated cast. This lead be to abandoning that concept and putting a hold to the OS-tan project in favor of developing my Channel-tan project.

But as the months followed, I decided to revisit the series for nostalgia purposes, and honestly, I'm pleasantly surprised how this series still has a following. Sure, Microsoft Japan stopped advertising it, and the Futaba and Nijiura boards most likely lost interest in it, but it still has an active social media following on Pixiv, Reddit, and even this site itself. In fact, there is a dedicated wiki made by the fans:

OS-tan.moe, which was created after the previous wiki, OS-tan collections, was abandoned, having last updated on January 18, 2017. The wiki covers more about the OS-tan lore and establishes the "Futabaverse" (Futaba/Nijiura created OS-tans) and "Madobeverse" (Microsoft Asia/Japan created OS-tans) as separate universes. Case in point...

The Madobe family tree! According to its article on the moe wiki, there are 3 lineages of the tree - Madobe, Nezu, and Shirato. The surname Nezu is an anagram of Zune (Microsoft's defunct iPod competitor). Each of the family's names are based around each version of Windows, e.g. Goichi's name is derived from Windows NT 5.1 (Windows XP's kernel name); the Kanjis in his name are a translations of 5 (Go) and 1 (Ichi). I actually like this concept, having a family tree of descendant from a different generation representing a real-life product (hardware or software) or broadcast station from a different decade, rather than having 11 or so woman in one house being taken care of a parental figure who seems to represent the company who made them. It's a shame we never get to see their faces aside from Claude and Mutsumi nor does the family tree lore go beyond that.

Cocoa overnight oats and cryptic crossword

Bristol Loaf is one of those places that always seemed too popular to even attempt to get a table. I must have walked or bussed past it hundreds of times by now, and I've just never even tried. (To be fair, my life and routine was different when I moved here, so I can cut myself some slack. Some.) However, it fell upon me to suggest brunch spots for this morning, and, because he has the knack for this sort of thing, Sam managed to bag a table and had the crossword our by the time I arrived.

Cryptic crosswords are something that I've always wanted to learn; it's always felt weird that I don't know how to do them - it feels like it would be on brand for me to get them, and I sort of do, but I just assume everything is an anagram indicator and go from there. I can't pretend it's not lovely that it's something I get to learn from Sam, although the Guardian Saturday cryptic isn't exactly beginner level. Ultimately, my approach to cryptics is still to vibe it out.

And then, at the next table! Joey! What a revelation! So soft! So good! So dog! I learned (from his human companions) that he was out for the first time since having a hip operation, and was simultaneously very friendly and very anxious. What a mood, Joey, what a mood.

In terms of food, I was mostly looking longingly at everything else on the menu while eating my cocoa overnight oats, sans roasted hazelnut, half a spoonful at a time. They were good, but I wish I could have had something more potato-based. Still, really nice to go and eat somewhere that could cater to my post-tooth-extraction vegan slurry diet. It had a blood orange syrup that was genuinely really good and I would have also enjoyed in e.g. an iced coffee. Maybe it would have tasted like a mouthful of Revels.

A Second Son (2012)

Found footage movies are cheap to make. Evangelical Christian movies are cheaply made. You'd think the most natural thing in the world would be for David A. R. White, the Kendrick brothers, or the Christiano brothers to say, "Let's make a found footage movie."

But they haven't. So far, this UK/American co-production is the closest thing we've got.

The meat and potatoes of this movie is the video diary of 15-year-old Emily Turner, documenting the family drama that results when she is sent home from boarding school for being pregnant. And there's a lot of drama: not only is Mum an abusive drunk who declares that she only married her husband because she had to, but Emily insists that she hasn't taken the course of action that typically results in pregnancy. Her brother, Stu, offers moral support, though he, too, thinks she's covering up for someone.

Mum insists Emily have an abortion, and even makes the appointment for her. With a camera hidden in her purse, she meets with the doctor, who introduces himself as Art Chitins (the name is an anagram). He tells her to think of the fetus as a tumor that will kill her if it isn't removed.

Emily is prepped for the procedure, but it is interrupted by an event which, if I told you what it was, you would accuse me of making up to make the filmmakers look crass and insensitive. Emily gets out of the building when a fire breaks out, and watches the clinic burn down through the rear window of the car. After the fastest cure for alcoholism on record, Mum says that Emily can keep the baby.

Then, wealthy people from around the world (the dialogue says they are world-famous, though their names are redacted) begin showering Emily with gifts, calling themselves the Wise Men. Soon, Emily and Stu realize that the Second Coming has been ordained, and Emily is guaranteed a place in the room when it happens.

The good news: The acting by the actors playing the family is good, and the girl playing Emily acts rings around the adults who are supposed to be playing government officials.

The bad news: This movie doesn't seem to know who it's for. The F-bombs and anti-family remarks in the beginning will repel evangelical Christians; the glacial pacing and near-total lack of scares will leave horror fans unsatisfied; and just about everyone will be skeeved out by the scene where a 15-year-old walks around in front of the camera in her underwear.

#it keeps saying 'how many potato?' and someone pointed out that '2 potato' is an anagram of 'ato 2top' #and there's a different anagram within the entry so it's not like... far out there #esp when the japanese word is 'po-te-to' but he's using 'po-ta-to'
