hey!! so a while back somebody asked me to write my thoughts on and rank kaito’s relationships with every member of the v3 cast the way that i did with rantaro on my main blog and since i’m procrastinating on writing a fic right now i figured i’d go ahead and do it. please remember these are all my personal opinions that you absolutely do not have to agree with! that said i enjoy kaito with preeetty much everybody so there shouldn’t be anything TOO polarising in here. lol

this is going to get long, so i’m putting it under the cut. i’ll be ranking them in order of least favourite to most favourite.

kaito + korekiyo (2/10)

i’m sorry i just do not believe.

okay, i’m just being silly. i do believe, a little bit, it’s just that i kind of don’t like this pairing? lol i’m sure i’ve talked about it before but most justifications i’ve heard for shipping this are just that like... kaito wouldn’t judge kiyo postgame? i guess? which i would never try to argue against, i just don’t know if i’m a fan of shipping kaito based on whether he can save someone or not. kaito deserves better.

having said that, i DO like them, even romantically sometimes. i think there’s a beauty about shipping two nerds and i think kiyo would fluster kaito a LOT with his specific brand of compliments... i think they could infodump to each other. and i think they could take care of each other, as a special treat. also kaito deserves a tall boyfriend.

kaito + tsumugi (3/10)

don’t come after me for this peter. you know i love your rambles about them. but they don’t interact a lot in the game and their most significant interactions ingame are, uh... tsumugi insinuating that he’s an idiot? i’m not really a fan.

having said that, i AM friends with peter, and i DO like the idea of these two interacting. something something creator and her creation, i’d love to read an introspective about kaito not wanting to be a hero and tsumugi being freaked the fuck out about it. alternatively kaito coming to terms with the fact that tsumugi just genuinely likes being plain i think could be really funny. i don’t see these two romantically much at all but i think it’d be fun for them to be friends. plus she’d make him cosplay and he’d have fun even if he wouldn’t admit it. god bless.

kaito + kirumi (5/10)

welp. we’ve run out of easy ones to throw under the bus. i’m officially fucked. i actually like these two a lot, they’re just ranking so low because i don’t think about them often... or kirumi often... kirumi my queen i’m sorry to do you like this.

i think kaito would respect her a lot. i can see him working hard to make things easier on her and getting everyone else’s asses so they give her the appreciation she deserves. similarly i think kirumi would admire him a little and think he’s a good guy-- kirumi has that way of seeing through people’s facades to their true potential and i think she’d sort of realise how much kaito just puts on a front for other people, and admire it. mutual respect if nothing else. i also think they could take care of each other though and i’d love to see them romantically... they fight to open doors asmr.

kaito + himiko (5/10)

another one that i really can’t stand romantically HAHA. this one has less solid reasoning behind it and more because i just kin both of them so hard it’s a little bit disorienting. also maybe i can’t imagine them getting along well enough to actually date. sue me.

i would love to see them bicker though. these two are both so childish it’d be really funny to just watch them go at it. thinking about the vibes of himiko demanding someone carry her and kaito snapping that nobody will in chapter five. they’re funny and immature and i want that. i also think about kaito inviting himiko along with his fight monokuma crew in chapter one “just in case her magic works” and cackle at times. kaito, you’re an astronaut... still, i think they could enjoy being edgy edgelords together. chuuni syndrome is contagious, i swear to god.

kaito + angie (6/10)

this is already getting really hard. the low middle ones are always the hardest.

i didn’t used to understand this ship much just because i think kaito would probably be a little afraid of angie? but i love the idea of her clinging to him and him being like, mildly annoyed but endeared by it. i think she’d paint him and call him beautiful and her muse and kaito would be insanely flustered and flattered and tell her to quit saying all of that nonsense. and angie would giggle.

i can also see kaito really helping her? angie struggles i think with repression, like she always has to keep smiling, and i think kaito would see that and help her while still being assertive and telling her no, which is something angie totally needs in a relationship, so it’d work out on her end-- but i can also see angie calling kaito out on being a hypocrite and them working together to sort through their problems mutually. it could be cute. also yes it reminds me of tenkangie. tenkangie is still better, i just, i just, leave me alone.

kaito + kiibo (6/10)

i feel like i’m going to lose followers for placing cyberspace so low but the fact of the matter is i... really don’t think about kiibo that much. in general. i’m sorry king you really are a real one your writing is just... kind of a little bit bad. it’s not your fault.

i love kiibo. he’s easily one of the most empathetic characters in v3. i can’t see him putting kaito on a pedestal at all. he’d admire kaito for his bravery and integrity but i think he’d just see kaito as a friend, too, instead of somebody to worship. i do think kiibo would be ride or die for him, though. and of course kaito would encourage kiibo to follow his passions and they’d be silly little guys together and isn’t that all to want in a relationship. plus kaito could probably take kiibo to space or something and that would be delightful i don’t actually know jaxa’s laws surrounding bringing fully sentient teenage robots to space you’ll have to come back to me on that one.

kaito + gonta (7/10)

(stares mournfully at rantaro wax figurine) oh amami-chan we’re really in it n-- actually i think i made this joke on my rantaro post too. nevermind bit cancelled.

i LOVE these two. every time i think about them i think about chapter four, which, can you blame me? just the energy of kaito believing so hard in gonta because he KNEW he was telling the truth, to the point where he was recklessly endangering everyone? like yes king think with ur heart not ur head. i’ll love you for it even if shuichi won’t.

seriously though, these two are so fun. they both struggle with the desire to help and take care of people... they both internalise that they’re stupid... they’re both science nerds... they could INFODUMP to each other... and take CARE of each other... i headcanon kaito to think that bugs are cool so i like the idea of gonta showing him all kinds of bug specimens and kaito going wild over it. not to mention they’re both really good at the stars, too... kaigonta stargazing, wowww... they are the part of saigokumota that i shamefully think about the least but i should think of them more. i just think they’re neat.

kaito + miu (7/10)

i already know craig glownary is out there putting me on a hitlist or something for putting irumota so low but i, listen. listen. i’m running out of options here.

these two are THE slowburn frenemies to lovers pairing ever. the bickering. the cinematic parallels. they’re both hot with no brains yet they have so much brains. they both have dumb titles. they’re both pink toned. it’s about the false bravado. it’s SO much about the false bravado. kaito would be gentle with her without taking shit from her and miu would show her support and affection when he really needs it and god she would struggle but she would try and it’d mean the world to him. miu knowing kaito is the epitome of “i’m not being used to being treated like i’m beautiful” and i just think that’s neat.

also miu would look good in kaito’s jacket. maybe these are just being ranked based on how good they would look in kaito’s jacket. who knows.

kaito + ryoma (8/10)

we’re getting deep into slim pickings territory. i really do hate to put hoshimota so close to the middle but you know how it is. you KNOW how it is.

these two... oh my god. i cry over them daily. kaito’s unspoken idolisation of ryoma. ryoma’s bitterness and resentment of himself coming out as bitterness towards kaito. kaito reminding ryoma of his old self. kaito needing ryoma to be strong, to be the person he used to be, because if ryoma can’t be a hero, is it even worth being a hero? is it even worth believing himself? all his life he’s been aspiring to an ideal that’s no longer being upheld by the very person he admires most...

i can’t see these two dating. LMAO. sorry! i can’t. i see kaito yearning for ryoma and then eventually just... breaking off? i feel like it would be too painful for him to be around ryoma knowing he’s holding ryoma to an impossible standard. if they did get together it would be after a lot of self-work on both ends. i’d really like them to get closure where kaito admits to ryoma that he’s always been putting him on a pedestal, really quite unfairly, and that he’s sorry, and ryoma admitting that he just doesn’t want kaito to lose his spark by hanging around a guy like him... UGH. nevermind. these two invented tragic romance. their tdp event makes me feral.

kaito + maki (8/10)

now i do love me some harumota and y’all know this. i think maki would be higher if she didn’t hit kaito in chapter three. maybe that’s a little stupid of me but what can i say, it’s the kin.

these two are... incredible. i love maki not knowing what love is and progressively opening up and putting her faith in kaito. she knows it’s stupid and she knows she’s just going to lose him but she can’t help it, he’s just so good. kaito can see all the red flags around maki, that she’s dangerous and violent and can’t communicate her emotions, but he believes in her so deeply anyway, he knows she has such a capacity to love, to take care of people, and he just wants more than anything to help her...

these two have SO MUCH potential that wasn’t explored in canon. i realise chapter five IS her protecting him but i’m begging you to think about what maki protecting him would look like when they have a healthy relationship. maki telling kaito bluntly that she doesn’t care if he’s a hero, that she just wants to pay him back for all he’s done for her. kaito being her voice of reason, her comfort, her safety blanket, even if she’s often the one fighting to keep him safe. maki telling people off for calling him an idiot before realising that she does that all the time... ugh. kaimaki is something that can actually be so personal.

i also love them platonically. i love maki thinking she loves kaito because she’s never been loved before and realising actually she just... likes him as a friend and can’t tell the difference. LOL.

kaito + tenko (9/10)

pants heavily through my mouth. we’re getting to the REAL brainrot section of this list. kaito and tenko are best friends actually, kodaka told me himself.

i want them to FIGHT. god i want them to fight. that ministarfruit post where they’re like “i want them to fight!” and it’s just tenko and kaito about to fight. so true. SO true. these two need to spar. i think they’d have fun together. plus the energies of tenko flipping kaito onto his back and seeing how much emotion he hides from his friends... knowing he’s hurting but not wanting to pry... mwah. mwah. mwah. mwah. mwah.

i don’t think kaito would try and challenge her beliefs about men, at least not in an overt or forceful way. i think he’d be patient with her, even while denying that he’s at all a degenerate. i think he’d help tenko to form positive, meaningful relationships with people, male and female, until she starts to break away from her master’s conditioning and... help talk her through it. help her get the resources to get therapy. ugh. i’m BEGGING you to think about these two taking care of each other. they are ride or die for each other. grips you. it’s about the parallels. IT’S ABOUT THE PARALLELS.

kaito + shuichi (9/10)

crying and sobbing and pissing and shitting and screaming. oh my god saimota. saimota saimota saimota.

THESE TWO!!!! every day i wake up i brush my teeth i eat my cereal and i think about shuichi and kaito’s chapter 4/5 conflict. i think about shuichi hyperfocusing on the case and not sticking up for kaito. i think about kaito admiring shuichi so much that he starts to resent him, starts to fear shuichi not needing him, starts to get desperate for reasons for shuichi to keep him around... not knowing that shuichi wants nothing more than for kaito to stay by his side, just as he is, and maybe let his guard down a little. UGH these two are TRAGIC and i’m so mad about them. oh my god. shuichi’s attempts to verbalise to kaito how important he is both getting cut off is homophobia against ME specifically. holy shit.

literally the epitome of stupid friends to lovers. shuichi’s braincells go out the window when kaito’s in the room actually. i love exploring them because they bring out such fascinating sides of each other and there’s so so SO much growth for them to do. i want them to deal with shuichi’s idolisation issues that stem from abandonment and with kaito’s fear of being vulnerable and i want them to work through it together and i started crying in chapter six when shuichi said the impossible is possible and i hope you did too,,, these two make me so so so tender. shuichi getting remotivated to go save kaito BECAUSE it’s kaito. shuichi focusing so hard on “finding the truth” that it inadvertently ruins the plan and gets kaito killed. man. MAN. these two huh. these fucking two.

kaito + kaede (9/10)

you can’t see it because i’m behind a computer screen but i’m literally vibrating so hard my pants are like, actively aflame. even if i were in front of you you wouldn’t be able to see me due to the frequency of my vibrations. i am so fucking fast. these two make me so goddamn excited.

kaito is RIDE OR DIE for kaede and i’ll never stop saying it. the way he sticks up for her in chapter one. THE WAY HE STICKS UP FOR HER IN CHAPTER ONE!!! the way that he’s so so so upset after she’s dead that he’s crying and unable to control himself and lashes out at shuichi even though it’s not his fault and i just... UGH. ugh. kaito wants to make her proud so hard and don’t worry buddy you did it... these two are so fucking sweet.

he supports her so much. oh my god. his belief in kaede is literally so fucking potent. he asks her to become an ASTRONAUT in his ftes... and to teach him how to play the piano... i want more content with them so bad it makes me feel stupid. and the TUNNEL scene when kaito sticks up for her and then encourages her and kaede just stays behind in the tunnel and her narration says “Thank you, Kaito...” i’m literally crazy i cannot be normal about these two.

i think kaede would really come to appreciate him and his unwavering support of her. i think she’d especially notice how much he’s always on her side when he starts to struggle and flicker in and out, like sort of realising how much he’s always there for her and strongly wanting to do the same. i think kaede would be sooo adamant about caring about him, not some hero who doesn’t exist, and i just. hghghgh.

also you’ll never guess what i’m going to say but kaede? in kaito’s jacket? oh baby.

kaito + kokichi (10/10)

myself of a couple years ago is literally foaming at the mouth. she’s crying and spitting and trying to come through the screen and kill me. and honestly she can suck it because oumota is SO GOOD.

they’re... rivals. kaito chases kokichi all of chapter two just to try and talk to him. kokichi plays it up but i feel like they were both enjoying themselves? they’re both childish little guys... just having fun... playing hero and villain... ugh. the way that their free time events mirror each other too, the way kaito’s is full of extravagant stories about him being a hero where he’s clearly describing playing pretend games as a kid and kokichi’s is full of lies about him being a villain where he’s clearly telling exaggerated stories about his little club back home... these two are literally so good and i haven’t even MENTIONED chapter five yet.

by the way, chapter five? holy shit. (my pupils dilate like a cat’s and i start making fire alarm noises with my mouth.) hey fellas is it gay to agree to kill your rival in a plan that would end up sacrificing you both to end the thing you both mutually want to destroy? ugh. kaito getting in the way of the crossbow bolt. kaito carrying kokichi to the press. kokichi asking him for a kiss because he’s never gotten to kiss anybody before. kaito jumping out of the exisal wearing kokich’s scarf. kokichi dying with kaito there and kaito dying alone. these two make me insane. THESE TWO MAKE ME INSANE!!!!

i think they could bring out the best in each other? i think kokichi could challenge kaito to be a little more selfish and i think kaito could inspire more genuine belief in people in kokichi? like i feel like they can both peel away each other’s layers and make each other... better. more genuinely themselves. there’s just something really lovely about that, the mutual vulnerability, the way they can take care of each other... i love them and i love the way that they love. that’s all.

kaito + rantaro (11/10)

if you read my rantaro post you already knew this one was coming. i know i’m making a clown out of myself for putting a rarepair (if you can even call amamota that anymore which btw i am taking full credit for) in number one place, but listen. listen. i don’t choose the brainrot. it’s not my fault.

these two are... neat. they’re neat. rantaro leans pessimistic and kaito leans optimistic but they both try to take care of the people around them and sacrifice themselves for the ones they love... kaito is intuitive and rantaro is observant... kaito runs hot and rantaro runs cool... it’s about that contrast in similarity, baby. rantaro offers kaito a space to just... relax, and be himself, and kaito is like a home for rantaro, a hearth, something consistent he can always come back to.

i think there’s a bit of a push and pull with them in the beginning, they’re both trying so hard to be the one to shove their problems to the side and take care of the other, but neither of them is okay with that and they both want to be close so they accept that... they kind of have to give a little if they want to have this relationship, and if they want to help! so they do, and it turns into them... seeing their own flaws in one another and realising how harmful it is.

rantaro helps kaito to communicate without taking the blame for everything, he encourages kaito to be honest with his friends and think things through. kaito keeps rantaro grounded, he keeps rantaro from sprinting off at the first sign of conflict or vulnerability. they take care of each other. kaito isn’t USED to being treated like he’s someone beautiful and valuable and being with someone who is open about how they feel and how they love but rantaro is SO open because he’s so tired of losing people and he’s not going to let kaito slip away before he’s managed to express how he feels... my god.

these two are my BIG amab nonbinary headcanons and i really love the idea of kaito coming to rantaro to talk about gender struggles... i think rantaro would be so supportive and understanding without making kaito feel weird about it. i just think they have so much potential to really Understand each other in a way that they can’t understand anybody else.

also!!! them stargazing together? them sailing together? kaito helping rantaro find his sisters? rantaro quizzing kaito on space facts to help him prepare for exams and encouraging him? these two. these two. grips your shoulders SO fucking hard. oh my god.
