the body types of the inkfish in splatoon, what's with them?
this post will obviously have vague references to weight, but not in a serious way. warning you regardless though!
the anatomy of inklings and octolings, or the inkfish in general, is something that continues to interest me. this post will be mainly revolving around them. as you know, there are many defining features between the two species. round or pointy ears, a/symmetrical teeth, connective eye masks or a lined eye look, ten or eight tentacles, the list goes on. however, something that stays consistent within either species if that their body types remain the exact same.
the squid sisters and off the hook for reference. as you can see, putting aside obvious differences between the two species and height, their features are identical. this also applies to any player characters. why is this? let's look more into it.
as i'm sure you are aware, beauty standards more than likely play some kind of role in the designs of idols and avatars. real idols and celebrities are really skinny a majority of the time so it makes sense they'd incorporate it into the designs because of this.
that's not all, though. wouldn't that be too easy?
while typical standards of beauty definitely contribute, personally i believe that isn't the only reason.
something important to remember when talking about the anatomy of the octolings and inklings is that they aren't humans, and naturally will not have the same features. anything from their lack of bones, sensitivity to water, {water isn't lethal to them and can only be harmful in staggering amounts} ink assumingly playing a part in their hydration, their lack of actual hair, thin skin, really the only things "human" about them are that they have limbs, {along with fingers and toes} skin, their facial structures, and the fact they can speak.

real squids and octopuses, even cuttlefish, are really low in fat. from what i can gather, octopus and squid have anywhere from one to six grams of fat per a few ounces. going back with what i said earlier, inkfish are not people, and it's highly plausible that they have a different acceptable body fat range than humanity, and can survive and thrive on very little. this, along with the fact that essentially all younger inkfish are very active, i believe play huge roles in their physique. fat also likely stores in them in the same places, as with real cephalopods.

conclusion,
do beauty standards have a part with appearances in splatoon? i can almost guarantee. though, it's crucial to remember that the way inkfish present anatomically and the way humans do have a large contrast. inkfish are very heavily based on real cephalopods, and the developers of splatoon are very intentional when it comes to character design and referencing what species they're based on, so i'm going to say that it's safe to assume that this is another huge reason for how they look physically.
what do you think? feel free to let me know. this is something that's floated in my mind on and off, but just today i started really thinking about it. thanks for reading.

I wanted to clarify about the inkfish's blood color? I was told there is a bit in the latest art book confirming they have red blood but i am yet to see a source so i wanted to ask
Gear acquired by our researchers
Red Hammertreads
Anakki has caught on to the latest trends, and has presented a collection of "looting"-themed footwear. The message of "Take what you want by force!" resonated with the boom of rough and rugged Splatlandian fashion, creating some die-hard fans. The motif of the collection is a gangster octopus, which has turned deep red due to the blood that's risen to its head.** This deep crimson color is symbolic of the collection.
**頭に血が上る means to be agitated or excited, but literally something like "blood to rise to one's head". with all the mentions of dark red, this word choice connecting it to blood was deliberate so i left it in.
Turning red due to agitation in this case might be implying its like a deimatic display rather than literal blood, but regardless that is still a connection of red blood and octopuses.
regardless of if you want to take this as solid proof of inklings/octolings having red blood, there are some other things that hint at them having red blood. like this art showing some inklings with ears and noses tinted red from the cold:
or this concept art for an inkling anatomical model, with the insides tinted red
There's also how the inside of the mouths of the squid sisters is a fleshy pink/red color rather than a color connected to their ink color, but theres some weirdness with how consistent mouth colors are
If you're thinking, "but wouldnt it make more sense for them to have blue blood because they're cephalopods?" this is what i thought too. While blue blood is fine for sea dwelling cephalopods to have blue blood, it's inefficient for carrying oxygen for land dwelling creatures. Inklings and octolings took on many adaptations to make them more suited for land, so why not their blood? If the concept of a mollusc evolving from having blue to red blood sounds farfetched, this exact thing has happened to ramshorn snails!
Other option is they literally have ink blood which *shrug* idk they are creatures of Flesh and Organs so Im inclined to believe they have actual blood that, like the organs, we don't see because Family Friendly Game . I mean, we know for sure salmonids have actual flesh and blood (you can literally buy their meat in mako mart) but in game they just kind of explode like ink bags.
anyway in short: not explicitly confirmed what kind of blood inklings and octolings have but with the S3 artbook and these few other examples i think red blood is a real possibility.

Does Ikkan’s “swim” form look more fleshed out due to his plus-sized frame?
Hmm,nope I don't think so, the squid shape in my headcanons mostly depends a lot on the species, age and genes of the inkfish. Here's a more detailed explanation:
(random headcanon, Ikkan loves black coffee, he's some big sour-bitter fan)
note that the suckers on the inside is just only on swim form. About Warabi's small tentacle, is not a big concern simply doesn't allow him to swim straight like some slight joycon drift, he needs to manually correct his position.

how does excretion of ink work? where are the ink sacs located and how is it able to be siphoned through an ink tank and into a weapon during turf wars?
The ink sac is shown here in the inkling anatomy basics! There, you can see that it's located roughly in the chest of an inkling, and is their second largest organ after the skin. The ink sac is connected to the back of the neck by a tube, where it connects to the ink gills.
Despite the common name, the gills aren't actually gills at all. It's simply a ruffle of sensitive skin that helps protect the entrance to the ink canal.
In turf war, most ink is drawn from the ink gills by a suction cup like structure, which is connected to the ink tank by a tube. Most weapons then have a separate tube that connects to the bottom of the ink tank.
The primary function of the ink tank is to stop the weapon from actually using any suction on the ink gills- only from the tank itself. They're really sensitive, and trying to draw out extra ink faster than it's produced can be damaging.
