hi there! i was wonderin' ya could translate a bit of cuttlefishs page in the s3 artbook- more specifically the text next to his doodles (and ESPECIALLY the one next to his younger self doodle...)
idk if uh, this is enough of a reasonable or interesting request but im a really. REALLY. big fan of him, and i like to read anything, and everything about him! but ya know, we might not get the english release for another year (or looking at haikara walker, ever...) soooo i was wonderin if ya have the book and could do it!
my japanese is terrible and by terrible i mean that i can recognize the non-kanji writing but cant really translate it by myself (and we all know how google translate is...) so i have no idea why i got the book- anyway!
thanks in advance if ya do it!! :3

Notes on Cuttlefish, bottom of page 90. the "only a bit old" (ちょいおじ choi oji ) part is not very precise with his age, it seems its supposed to be him around the time of the great turf war. (oji=uncle or just an older man in a broad sense. you can be as young as 30 to be called this, and since he's just a 'little bit' oji, and how he couldn't have been THAT old during the war, i would guess this is him around the age of 30) "divide by polys" was the only thing i wasnt too sure on but i assumed it was advice for whoever was modeling his squid form.

Hello! I have been analizing Alterna and I noticed the Alterna script found in the game files isn't the only one used there. There seems to be a second script in use, specifically the one you can see on metal containers and security tape of each site, reading "SITE 01" (or whichever site you're currently on), as well as what's written on the side of the site 4 submarine, and other parts of the overworld. I didn't find it in your video about splatoon scripts, nor in the docs it linked to. What do we know about the script? Is it just a design thing on some areas and not actually a full alphabet?
Alterna Stencil Script. Personally I have done zero analysis of the alterna scripts, but what I know is that it has been analyzed by some people I know, and it's unclear if it's a proper script or not.

OK. . . seems i missed the whole 'chickens are controversial in splatoon' thing. . . why?
To put it short there's evidence both for and against them existing, and this is without me actually looking anything up so i might be missing something.
cases for chickens being extant: there's been chickens present in SOME form in several splatfests, they're not mammals so they're not NECESSARILY extinct, despite being domesticated animals and thus being unlikely to survive it doesn't mean it'd be IMPOSSIBLE because pigeons and other relatively human-dependent birds still survive in Splatoon, and of course there are many instances of Eggs being a staple in inkling culinary culture. egg is everywhere
cases for chickens being extinct: we only actually See chickens (or chicken, as in food) in splatfest art and splatfest dialogue which isn't (or at least definitely wasn't until Splatoon 3) canon-compliant at all. We havent actually seen chickens in-universe to my knowledge, nor had them mentioned outside splatfest. probably the biggest nail in the coffin is that there IS a chicken statue in Splatsville, and typically when there are big animal statues in the cities those are statues depicting extinct animals. this is something from an interview that touched on the crane and tortoise statues in Inkopolis Square; which also confirms that it wasn't JUST MAMMALS that suffered and went extinct, it was also other miscellaneous land animals and even random birds which I think me and initially a lot of other people thought were just. Fine and safe. But if a random bird like a crane can be extinct now then chickens are absolutely not safe just because they're not mammals. although eggs are in like every food it's not really been confirmed in any way that those are CHICKEN eggs (although that is the most likely), they could as well be farming domesticated pigeons or something
So really it's a big case of no real confirmation they DO exist, but also no real confirmation they DON'T exist, but also the only context we see them in-universe is in a context where every other animal depicted there IS extinct and it's like a lore thing. So the existence of eggs is a big hint TOWARDS them existing but could easily mean nothing whereas the other one is more in line with proving they do not exist. it is a very uncertain situation for the chicken
HOWEVER!!!!!! there is hope for the chicken. splatfests in Splatoon 3 have had more in-universe accurate themes and dialogue so far (meaning they dont randomly make up shit like "marina's landlord is a narwhal" and "inklings eat red meat" or whatever the fuck in that sea food vs mountain food one we didnt even have that one it was regional). SO THIS MEANS! in the next splatfest we Could get a somewhat stable answer to if chickens exist or not. of course the other 2 options are extinct animals whereas the chicken is 50/50. i'm HOPING the dialogue touches upon this fact and doesn't just talk about all of those like they just Exist. basically we are very close to some kind of progress on this issue that would be Somewhat credible because while splatfest dialogue has never been a credible source in the past, it has been WAY better in S3
TL;DR we just don't know. Chickens are a mystery

I found a kamabo co poster with an eye symbol on it(the square). There is an ad that has a big eye on it in splatsville ....
Is Tartar literally advertising ?
Is this foreshadowing????
Mr. Grizz knockoff
I believe tartar was advertising, especially in the octarian world, and i imagine that was how it acquired some of its test subjects. There is a kamabo ad in the haikara walker artbook on page 191. none of this is ever made super clear though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but i really don't think the posters in inkopolis square in s3 are foreshadowing, but the opposite, they look old and torn, i think that's just showing what was there. tartar was destroyed in s2 and side order i think makes that fact clearer since that story is all about the recovery of the sanitized octarians. as for in splatsville, are you sure it's a kamabo co poster? do you have pictures? there's a few signs i can think of in splatsville that feature eyes and arent kamabo. The only kamabo-adjacent thing in s3 i can think of is the sea cucumber phones, with the logo being the same on the CQ cards and text being in deepsea script
Tumblr media
but i dont think tartar has anything to do with this since it is Dead, but rather some other company in the deepsea (likely related to CQ Cumber).

What was it that got you into Splatoon?
my memory is a bit hazy but i remember it was something i saw around on tumblr first. one of my mutuals way back when got into it, and that was probably some of my earliest exposure. but what really got me interested was a friend i had in high school who i looked up to and was really into splatoon and had ocs. in march 2016 i ended up getting a wii u for my 17th birthday (it was something i had wanted for a while) and went and bought splatoon that same day. i was obsessed, it was so much fun to play i also made some OCs to try and interact with my friend's ocs. all of them were eventually scrapped or just joke concepts that didnt exist for more than one drawing... except for one who i made after school at that friend's house, called "shitty headphone squid." he was eventually renamed to cress. i didnt interact with the splatoon fandom much online until around the time of splatoon 2's launch, when i started getting more into fleshing out ocs. i also remember being interested in knowing more about splatoon's lore and worldbuilding at that time (especially with the announcement of salmon run), but resources were scarce all i'll say is that i fell out with that friend, but the splatoon obsession never left

hello! sorry if youve already been asked something like this before, but I’m curious about the japanese gender nuance when it comes to acht. Mostly because I know the dedf1sh blurb in haikara walker uses “彼女” to describe them, and they appear pretty femme, but they use “boku” in their dialogue in side order. (And of course they use they/them in the English localization, not she/her.)
I know only a little japanese so most nuance about this topic would be lost on me… I was wondering if you might have some more insight? Is there anything related/more telling in how they speak in their dev diaries as well?
I took a quick look on twitter and some articles to see what some JP users are saying about Acht's gender... The consensus I see is that because of their introduction post on twitter (and aforementioned Haikara Walker blurb) using 彼女 kanojo, or "she", Acht is a ボクっ娘 bokukko. this is a slang term for a young woman that uses the traditionally masculine first person pronoun "boku". not that there Aren't women that use "boku" in real life but it's a more of a manga/anime trope... I can't say I'm extremely knowledgeable on this, but it seems how femininely/masculinely these ボクっ娘 characters act can vary. another take i saw was that, because in the game itself Acht's gender is very much ambiguous (and even because they use they/them pronouns in english), that leaves their gender more open to interpretation. Again, I only took a quick look, but seems like a similar thing is happening on the JP side as there is on the english side: do we count that one tweet from 2018 or not? I honestly think it's more valid for that tweet/haikara walker info to be counted on the JP side.... regardless, there is something CLEARLY gender-nonconforming happening with Acht. While this wasn't in your ask, I wanna address a related question I've seen pop up a few times in my ask box and around online: Because of that 2018 info, should we still use "she" for Acht in english? Honestly...I don't think so. I think in this case, we can't use what's happening on the Japanese side to determine whether we can use "she" for Acht because there is a gender presentation happening there that doesn't fully translate, and "they/them" is how that was chosen to be localized once their personality and way of speaking became known. Plus "she" hasn't been used in english officially since 2018 and it wouldn't be the first time a Splatoon NA post from that long ago was quietly retconned. Remember how Ikkan and Warabi were renamed to Quinn and Mashup? Since the english version is subject to these kinds of retranslations while the japanese version isn't, that's part of why I think it's more fair for JP users to still consider that old tweet/haikara walker blurb as valid.
got a little side tracked from the main question but i hope that helps!

I know Cipher is referred to using it/its pronouns, I’m just curious on how they refer to Cipher in Japanese.
from what i can see, pronouns are avoided altogether for cipher (this is easy to do in japanese).

Do you have any headcanons that either conflict with or go directly against canon? If so, what are they?
i have a lot of headcanons that i think plausibly bend canon or arent confirmed or denied by anything, the only one i can think of that outright conflicts is that i dont draw or think of inkfish having breasts or bellybuttons despite them clearly having both in the game. i dont care if it looks "weird" to our human eyes, if they look just like humans but with funny hair then whats the point! they need to look at least a little weird! ok i will now use this ask as an excuse to share some doodles i did a lil while ago. dont pay too much attention to the anatomy
Tumblr media
no nipples either, which Does fit canon but that is something not a lot of fan artists do lol

bit of a goofy question, but is verna's tentacle chromatophore loss kinda equivalent to hair loss and/or prematurely going gray in humans, or nah?
Tumblr media
(OLD art. haunted that i am now the same age verna is here)
yeah, i'd think it's closer to going gray but you can be slick with it
basically how chromatophores work is that each chromatophore cell is surrounded by a tiny ring of muscles that expand and distort to change the properties of the pigment inside.
how i imagine it here is that when a chromatophore dies, those tiny muscles just stop working and are stuck in a sort of. "default" state.
having just random clusters of dead chromatophores on your head doesnt look good, so verna just makes most of the chromatophores on his tentacles match the dead ones to hide it. he finds that having black tentacles suits him, so he's fine with it.
I think the color of that "default" state differs from inkfish to inkfish, and I headcanon this is how idols show 2 different colors on their tentacles. so marie's would be light gray, callie's is also black, pearl's is a cream color, etc.

I haven't seen many discussions around this, probably because there's little to no info regarding this topic. But what are the Salmon Jammer Dams?
Tumblr media
Are they just the Inkopolis trying to contain the Salmonid? Obviously it isn't working due to occurrence of Big Runs. Any theories or headcanons as to why these exist?
Tumblr media
japanese version of the map reveals 2 things: 1. salmon-jammer dam is not at all related to the similarly-named jammin' salmon junction (this is something i was thinking about while trying to find the JP map) 2. that the dam is indeed to keep out salmon (literally 'salmon preventing dam') surely the dam has SOME kind of effect in containing the salmonid. but also salmonid arent mindless animals and would understand the concept of a territory. the dam could be serving to mark the territorial boundaries more clearly between the two species on the side towards inkopolis. also i wonder if this is the same dam in spawning grounds or something different...

Are pet sea pigs a thing in Splatoon? I have an oc who name their pet sea pig Kevin (from an old mammalian Era tile that read “Kevin Baco”, it’s a pun similar to Kevin from animal crossing). Then again they’re sea cucumbers which are implied to be cat-like, but IDK
This is what a sea pig looks like
Tumblr media Tumblr media
when were sea cucumbers implied to be cat like...? are you thinking of nudibranchs which are kind of like splatoon dogs? anyway sea pigs were explored as a concept for C.Q. Cumber and scrapped. when it comes to most species and whether or not it exists as a pet or a fully sapient creature, it's a mystery until we see it actually in the game LOL these sea pig concepts are cute though, reminds me of guinea pigs. maybe they could exist in the deepsea as pets. or theyre just some guy but small

Ok I was going through the art of splatoon 2 book and I saw this in the inkblot concepts and I just gotta ask. who in the hell is Jin Krak-On?
presumably the jellyfish who founded krak-on brand. JP name of the brand makes the jellyfish connection obvious

im coming back to this months later because I was taking another look at the map in JP and noticed something I somehow missed!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"prefectural border" NOT country border. This confirms Inkadia and the Splatlands are prefectures in the same country! this does make sense considering its physically set in japan and japan is also divided into prefectures. i have to wonder if the governments in these prefectures are more autonomous compared to japan's prefectural governments, as the two areas really do feel like separate countries. also what even is the name of the country. what does the national government even Do. so much worldbuilding potential and questions that may or may not ever be answered incidentally, this means we know of 3 prefectures in this country. Splatlands, Inkadia, and...
Tumblr media
Chi Ba, where agent 4 lives
Me and my friends were arguing about this last night, so I figured I'd see if you have an opinion on the matter: is Inkadia a country, or a province within a country?
the 地方(region) in the jp name of inkadia (ハイカラ地方) makes me think it's part of a larger country... but that begs the question of what that country could be and if it's in the same country or a different country from the splatlands. definitely not dead set on this tho lol we know basically nothing about splatoon world politics

#asks #splatoonlore #octoexpansion Hi, I’m just hoping you can help me find a piece of info from an dev interview, find the article itself, and more importantly, confirm its even… real. If its not, and I just remember from Mandela, obviously its best I know. Its about how Octo Canyon and Octo Exp. take place simultaneously, or at least basically the same time. I looked through some of the interviews in your document, but no joy. If I’m right, please direct me, if I’m wrong, you can just tell me.
I think this is a question that i see pop up a lot. this was something stated by Nogami in the Splatoon 2 first anniversary Octo Expansion interview. Nogami: The events in Hero Mode and Octo Expansion take place on the same timeline. Therefore, the stories of Hero Mode and Octo Expansion don’t interfere with each other, and you can play either one first. However, with the release of Octo Expansion and the increase of Octolings in the city, the time in the world of Splatoon 2 has moved forward a bit. But if you haven't played Octo Expansion and are just looking at Inkopolis Square, you'll think, "Wow, there are a lot of new hairstyles.” The Inklings are so hedonistic that they don't even notice the coming of the Octolings (laughs).

Hi! Had a question re: terminology for Octolings/Octarians in NA vs JP that's been bothering me. Marina refers to the "octoling movement to make it to the surface" in the Side Order dev diaries. I'm really hoping that's an oversight and the original text implies it's all octarians and not just octolings 😭
Tumblr media
the JP just uses the broader term of "octopuses", though right before it marina says "octopuses the same as me" which would imply octolings. I don't think the english version is wrong per say, since it's really only octolings that we see have moved to the surface en masse (and therefore could be called a "movement"). that being said i do think the JP gives a bit more room to interpret it as other types of octarians leaving the domes too, which imo would be rarer considering the limbs=intelligence lore, but possible
