I try not to make a lot of original posts on topics I don't actually have any expertise on, but I haven't seen a whole lot of posts going around that actually... explain what happened and why? Like, the actual order of events, the history, and so on. I want to reblog reference posts and explanations by people who actually know what they're talking about, but I haven't seen anything that hits the buttons I need to actually get a political situation... but I have seen some stuff on other platforms.

So here are some videos I've personally found useful in understanding Israel-Palestine, because that's the format I've found most useful in processing information of this nature:

Why Israel was Originally Attacked from RealLifeLore (explains the decades of political dynamics, internal demographic tensions, and power shifts leading up to the current conflict; notably the best I've seen at actually explaining what 'Israeli Occupation' actually means)

Israel-Hamas War: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO) (commentary on the actual current situation in terms of who's getting attacked, why, and what the international ramifications so far are)

What's Happening in Israel and Why with Nathan Thrall from Adam Conover, series Factually (a discussion with an on-the-ground journalist about what life was like on the ground for Palestinian people in the areas under Israeli control during the last few years, just up to the attacks themselves)

I'm not going to claim these are comprehensive or completely unbiased (there are a few moments where I'm not entirely sure of the bias levels myself), but for people like myself who came into all this unsure of what the actual situation even is, I think these are a solid set to build up an basic understanding from which to put together opinions on future information.

I can't tell anyone what to think about how or why any of this is happening. I can only really tell you that what's going on right now is a crime on the level of attempted genocide, and that the years leading up to that have been an absolute mess on almost all fronts.

Again, I have no expertise on this subject. I just know what kind of video essay, political commentary, and interview style makes things understandable to me, personally, and might work for others. Please be courteous and kind in the comments and tags, as I am only sharing this because I haven't seen such a resource making the rounds yet, not actually trying to sway anyone in a particular direction beyond "the mass death needs to stop."

If you know of similar, relatively unbiased* resources, feel free to share.

* By 'relatively unbaised,' I don't mean taking or not taking a side; I just mean that it doesn't try to hide some information or other in favor of pushing a narrative, doesn't try to generalize a population, or doesn't seem to be trying to use emotional gut reactions to get readers or viewers to jump past reason or compassion.

I'm keeping this somewhat on a back burner because I think I need more data, but I feel like a current boundary being tested in actual play, for TTRPGs that are, for lack of a better way to put it, party-based and ostensibly heroic, is exploring in-game whether the PCs might be the bad guys or even just neutral guys who are not up to the task. (For this reason, "evil" campaigns do not count here, since those aren't about exploring it as a possibility but instead are simply stating that's the situation - I'm looking for the doubt and realization).

I feel like fans (and some GMs and players) get really skittish about this as a possibility, which is unfortunate because it's one of the most interesting things you can do.

#the best example i can think of offhand is sean finnerty tbh #like it feels some GMs and players are willing to play with it #but even then it's so often in places where consequences are lessened (bcbp and trinyvale come to mind) #and granted. this needs REALLY solid table discussion and agreement beforehand #AND it requires a LOT of GM work re: the enemy #i need to find like. actual play scholars somewhere bc i feel the two big trends rn are #1. more editing/production/removal from the table (which i think is bad) #and 2. this (which i think is good) #oh god. do i have to try to watch kollok. i don't really want to but i feel like i should to be informed.

The federation need to get better at marketing they need more people on their side. The rebellion is getting too many people and the only thing holding them back is the caution they are having. Currently almsot all of the islanders would join them

I hope the federation gets more people so that we have more drama and fighting. I want more character conflicts, i want more manipulating to get info, i want more spies, more stealth missions, more battles and more secrets. I want to get attached to the groups that form. i’ve said it before but! that moment when adam goes “how about, uh...i’m sorry?” to dean and dean just doesn’t say anything and adam has that one moment of looking like he’s about to get genuinely upset before michael fucking SEIZES control. like that was one of the only two moments where switching control of the body seemed rough instead of the usual flawless transition and the fact that michael immediately drops all pretense of conversation that he was holding up before adam came out and got upset and just goes “enough. why am i here?” it DOES seem like such a protective gesture and i love thinking about it

i have had TWO successful interactions with my father today. this is unprecedented

#nightmare.personal #i like my dad but he's either never here or the most logistically complicated person to talk to #the fact that i was able to text him enter his room and grab (1) object without some colossal problem ensuing is nothing short of miraculous #usually my interactions with him are (1) me needing something from him which usually is problematic in some degree #(2) him giving me random useful objects which is kind of tedious but appreciated #or (3) him talking to me about my future or some kind of intellectually stimulating topic #sometimes he talks too much and dominates the conversation leaving it unsatisfying #but more and more he has shown a willingness to give me the reigns which helps affirm to him my worth as a human being #which i think is necessary to do every so often but not really anything i concern myself with doing regularly #i haven't fucked up around him very much recently i would say which has done wonders for our dynamic too #because now i'm like his highly valued daughter and he's someone who gives me useful information/resources #this is all to say trying to explain my relationship with my dad is complicated but it ultimately boils down to #extremely good for my intellectual and moral development. significantly lacking in the emotional department #ultimately though i'm old enough now that i don't really need to seek out paternal affection or mourn the lack of it #he's never committed any kind of egregious transgression against me and most of his love is shown practically #like when he defended me against my mom for being gay and radicalized her in one fell swoop. that was rather wonderful of him #i do think he loves me more than i love him but i don't think he needs love as a mediator for communication so ultimately we're fine #like i do love the guy but sort of as an afterthought and more so as a human being rather than a father or a good human being #you know? admiration of his existence and general uniqueness but not necessarily agreement with his beliefs or #a claim that he's a good father. that being said i do think he is a good father #does any of this make sense? i don't know i was trying to explain this to an IRL before #but it gets messy because my IRLs are concerned enough about me + this particular one has a far worse dynamic with her father #so it's not exactly easy for me to explain emotional absence to someone struggling from general absence #whatever. i got the thing from him now maybe i will consider doing my homework

Just posting these here so everyone is aware of the shitty situation my landlord is putting me in here. I am not, according to my lease, allowed to install an air conditioner in my apartment. The wall unit doesn't work, it just pushes air around. Since I couldn't get one myself to replace it (both because of the terms of the lease and the fact that they are $400 at a minimum) I asked my landlord if it could be placed in as a maintenance request, considering Minnesota is already seeing 85° days.

I was told the unit already in place can't be fixed or replaced by them because it isn't something that they do. But I can't replace it myself or buy any other air conditioner.

Do you see how these two things may contradict each other? Do you see how a building solely for people on disability or in senior care might need some level of air conditioning in a Minnesota summer?

ok, i have some regrets about having agreed w/ 🌸 that we would both come home early from work to hang out, since i came home myself and then was advised that their work was taking longer than planned. because i hadn’t put my usual aggressive anti-self measures in place that allow me to remember to have the mental action of checking where i am, what time it is, and if i should be doing what i am doing, i just like accidentally lost two and a half hours of time since that is how long it took for them to get home after all. so i could have stayed at work and gotten some desperately necessary tasks done, or at least come home and gotten desk work done before they arrived, except that of course they also have work to do tonight still so we are absolutely not going to spend any time together regardless and this was all an absolute waste of my time. and now i have to be at work for 5-6 hours tomorrow to make up for it. it is just not a good bet to make a plan where 🌸 finishes work or does not work or stops working, i have to stop doing this, i am so stupid
