August 2021. I'll freely admit that Series 1 of VIGIL has a solid hook for a detective story: Scottish civilian police detective Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) is assigned to investigate a suspicious death aboard the Royal Navy ballistic missile submarine HMS Vigil while it's still on patrol, effective trapping her in a claustrophobic environment where everyone has something to hide, no one respects her authority, and the commanding officers seem eager to sweep the incident under the rug even though there may be a killer onboard. Meanwhile, Silva's partner and ex-girlfriend Kirsten Longacre (Rose Leslie) investigates a related murder ashore, with both the Navy and MI5 seemingly determined to obstruct her at every turn.

The first few episodes are well-directed and well-acted, with a cast that also includes Connor Swindells (of SEX EDUCATION) and the perennially underutilized Anjli Mohindra, and the show initially maintains a high level of tension despite some implausible and cliched story elements. However, much like the American NCIS shows, the plot eventually does a jarring about-face that transforms what initially seems to be a rather sordid exposé of the Navy into a propaganda piece about the importance of maintaining Britain's nuclear deterrent, with activists who want nuclear weapons out of Scotland painted as cowardly dupes (a reminder that costar Rose Leslie is a Tory who campaigned for Remain in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum). All this is on top of some really egregious copaganda even by policier standards.

The main reason I bothered with the show at all was learning that the two lead characters were actually presented as lovers, or ex-lovers (as opposed to fandom "gay"). I'm as susceptible as anyone to Suranne Jones' expressively pensive frown, and Rose Leslie is certainly attractive despite her terrible real-world politics, but the faux-mo relationship between Amy and Kirsten is neither very convincing nor ultimately very satisfying. Part of the problem is that it plays second fiddle to Amy's traumatic memories of the death of her former boyfriend and her determination to regain custody of the daughter she raised with him — a lot of plot to squeeze into a six-episode series that's also preoccupied with murder investigations, official coverups, and nefarious Russian spies — but even the flashbacks to the beginning of Amy and Kirsten's relationship seldom suggest any real affection between them, much less passion or love. Given a choice, I guess I'd rather have a bad show with chaste and unconvincing wlw than a bad show without any, but it still feels like pinkwashing, a half-hearted and somewhat cynical attempt to attract viewers who might otherwise find the show's subject matter and politics too unpalatable. Given the show's surprising popularity, it seems to have worked.

I only watched the first part of the ill-advised second series, which awkwardly retains the same title despite no longer having anything to do with the submarine. The second series has Amy and Kirsten back together, but they're still at odds because they're about to have a baby, which replaces the first season's conflict about Amy's commitment phobia with a tonally identical conflict based on her being a passive-aggressive control freak about Kirsten's pregnancy, thus once again sparing Jones and Leslie the need to feign too much unseemly gay affection. There's one (1) scene of them cuddling to suggest that perhaps these characters do indeed love each other, but they're then separated by the contrivance of the plot, which has the same problems as the first series and is also chock full of racist, Orientalist nonsense involving a fictional Arab country called Wudyan. Truly dire.

Next in the series for this month, Anne Lister! Often referred to as the first British modern lesbian, her encrypted diaries revealed her many lesbian relationships as well as a rich, contemporary account of life in early 19th century Yorkshire!

Now a corner stone in Britain's queer history, you can visit her family home which she restored and renovated with her wife Anne, Shibden Hall, and the church in which they married - whilst illegal at the time now celebrates their union with a rainbow plaque!

Let’s talk about sex, baby

A few of the notes on my post suggesting that Van Helsing might suspect Lucy of having been pregnant referred to how prudish and repressed Victorians are. So I thought I’d look into just how likely it is that Lucy might have had sex before marriage.

I’m not an expert in this by any means, just someone with access to Google, so I’d welcome any corrections.

Premarital sex in Victorian times

TL;DR: they did it.

The 1890s have retrospectively been dubbed the “Naughty Nineties” [1] because of lax sexual morals, but in fact Mina and Lucy’s generation were less likely to have sex outside of marriage than their parents or grandparents.

The easiest way to check this is through the best evidence that people are having sex – babies. (Doesn’t help much with gay sex, admittedly).

In the 1840s, 7% of births were outside wedlock, and around a third of women were pregnant when they got married. But by the 1890s, illegitimate births had declined to just 4%. [2] That’s a similar level to the 1930s, when 23% of women were pregnant when they got married. [3] So it might be fair to assume that the 1890s was about the same.

What I find interesting about this is that the number of illegitimate births is so much lower than the number of women pregnant at the altar (and the number of women having illegitimate children is probably lower still, assuming the same women might have multiple children out of wedlock).

To me that seems to suggest that most men, learning they had got a woman pregnant, would marry her – and a lot of premarital sex, perhaps most, happened between couples who intended to marry anyway.

But there would also be plenty of sex happening that didn’t result in conception. Birth rates fell significantly during Victorian times [4] in part because people knew about and used different means of birth control. [5] Maybe even a majority of couples in 1890s England had sex before they got married.

The upper and middle classes

Things were different depending on which class of Victorian society you were in. ‘Refined’ women of the upper and middle classes were much more restricted than working class women [6] and it’s likely that the vast majority of those premarital pregnancies were among the working class. Around 70% of British people were working class, 25% middle class and the remainder upper class. [7]

Mina and Jonathan are middle class, but Lucy is marrying into the upper class. As a result she’s chaperoned by her mother most of the time (while Mina is free to travel to Budapest by herself), though there have been instances in the novel already where she’s been left unchaperoned. And of course being chaperoned around men didn’t stop women from having sex with other women, as the diaries of Anne Lister, an upper-class lesbian in the early 19th century, recorded [8] – that’s the story told in Gentleman Jack. 

So Lucy being pregnant is unlikely – but not at all impossible.

Prostitution

Women were expected to be virgins on their wedding night; men, regardless of class, weren’t. The difference was that it was normal for men to use prostitutes. [9] It’s not clear how many prostitutes there were – it looks like the widely-quoted figure of 80,000 is an exaggeration [10] but the London police claimed to know of 8,600 [11] which is probably a reasonable minimum.

That’s 0.4% of the population of London at the time; about 4x as many sex workers per head of population as there are in the UK today. [12] So I'd guess at least 1 in 100 women in London were involved in sex work in the 1890s.

Bram Stoker

… is known to have had a sexless or nearly sexless marriage and it’s widely theorised that’s because he was gay – he certainly wrote some pretty romantic things about Walt Whitman. [13] I don’t really have much to say about this but I felt like I ought to include it.

i can definitely give you some recs for wlw shows, although i need to give two little disclaimers first:

i actually know of only one european wlw show, so i hope it's okay if i expanded this list to include western shows in general ;;;;;;;;

networks and streaming platforms are my mortal enemies because they love cancelling sapphic shows after one or two seasons (AND FUCK THEM ALL FOR THAT TBH), but if i didn't put those series on the list, this would be very short and i also think we would be missing out on some great television, so im adding their status to let you know what to expect before getting into it

OKAY AND NOW WITHOUT FURTHER ADO LET'S GET INTO IT

a league of their own (comedy drama - 1 season - cancelled)

based on the 1992 film of the same name with new characters and storylines, the series, set in 1943, is about the formation of the rockford peaches, a women's team in the nascent all-american girls professional baseball league.

one of my favorites on this list and im so upset it got cancelled AMAZON PRIME YOU WILL PAY FOR YOUR CRIMES

anne+ (drama - 2 seasons + a movie - complete)

the one actual european wlw show of the list, this is a dutch drama series that follows the main character, anne, as she tries to navigate her early twenties as a young lesbian. upon bumping into her ex-girlfriend one day, anne reflects on how her past relationships have contributed to who she has become.

honestly for being from a smaller indie production this is such a relatable, engaging, and well-done series, i definitely recommend it!!!!

dickinson (historical comedy drama - 3 seasons - complete)

based on the life of emily dickinson, the series focuses on her relationships with her family, her friends, her society, and on her long-term romantic relationship with her childhood best friend and sister in law, sue.

another big favorite of mine, it's fun, wild, has an unique modern twist, and both hailee steinfeld and ella hunt are incredible

first kill (fantasy drama - 1 season - cancelled)

the series focus on the relationship between teenage vampire juliette fairmont, who needs to make her first kill in order to enter adulthood and take her place among her powerful family of legacy vampires, and calliope burns, who belongs to a monster-hunting family and needs to slay her first monster in order to gain her family's approval and officially become a hunter herself.

look, i know there are a lot of mixed reviews on this show, but personally i enjoyed it a lot. it's good, campy fun, and a breath of fresh air from the hetero love stories that pervade the genre

gentleman jack (historical drama - 2 seasons - cancelled)

based on the collected diaries of anne lister, which contain over four million words and are written in secret code, documenting a lifetime of lesbian relationships. the series starts in 1832, when anne leaves hastings brokenhearted and heads to halifax, to restore her uncle's estate that she has inherited. while restoring the estate, she finds that the family land has a coal mine that it's being stolen by two brothers and develops a relationship with a woman named ann walker.

genuinely SO UPSET about this one being cancelled, it was such a gorgeous show with the most delightful english humor and complex relationships WHY PEOPLE CAN'T RECOGNIZE QUALITY TELEVISION

gypsy (psychological thriller - 1 season - cancelled)

the series follows jean holloway, a therapist who seems to have it all, but who secretly obsesses over the people her patients talk about in their sessions. this leads her to seek out sydney, one of her patient's ex-girlfriend, with whom she starts developing a romantic relationship under a secret identity.

i wasn't sure whether to rec this or not because i have very mixed feelings about it like the concept is very intriguing to me but the execution wasn't the best imho. it's still a solid show tho, and naomi watts is. well, naomi watts

the haunting of bly manor (horror - 1 series - complete)

loosely based on the novella the turn of the screw by henry james, the series follows dani clayton, a young american woman hired as an au pair for the children of the wealthy wingrave family in england. after arriving at the bly estate, she begins to see apparitions that proceed to haunt the premises.

i personally LOVE all of mike flanagan's series, and this one is no exception, however (unpopular opinion) i do find the second half of it kinda lacking. it's still a fantastic show tho, and i adore victoria pedretti

killing eve (thriller - 4 seasons - complete [but at what cost])

the series follows eve polastri, a british intelligence investigator tasked with capturing an assassin named villanelle. as the chase progresses, the two develop a mutual obsession.

once again i wasn't sure whether to rec this or not because while the first two seasons of this show are honestly some of my all time favorite, and the third season is still acceptable, the last one is honestly one of the biggest disappointment i've ever experienced in television. still, i think it's a staple of wlw shows in the last decade so i had to include it

warrior nun (fantasy drama - 2 seasons - cancelled, but we should be getting a revival as a trilogy of feature films. hopefully)

the story follows ava silva, a a 19-year-old orphan who wakes up in a morgue with a new lease on life and a divine artifact embedded in her back. she discovers she is now part of the ancient order of the cruciform sword that has been tasked with fighting demons on earth, and powerful forces representing both heaven and hell want to find and control her.

when i tell you i was so skeptical when i started this show but it's honestly SO GOOD, it really has it all: talented cast, beautifully-written three-dimensional characters and relationships of all varieties, gorgeous cinematography, amazing fight scene choreography.......THEY BETTER DELIVER THOSE MOVIES OR IM GONNA BE SO UPSET

AND NOW LET ME ADD SOME SHOWS WITH WLW RELATIONSHIPS IN A BIGGER ENSEMBLE CAST

sense8 (scifi drama - 2 seasons - complete)

the story follows eight strangers as they discover that they form a cluster of "sensates": human beings who are mentally and emotionally linked, can sense and communicate with one another, and can share their knowledge, language and skills.

i don't think i could say something about this show that hasn't already been said tbh. it's wonderfully queer and explores issues related to identity, sexuality, gender, and politics. it's honestly a must watch.

the wilds (drama - 2 seasons - cancelled)

the series revolves around a group of teenage girls who are left stranded on a deserted island after their plane crashes on the way to the dawn of eve program, a young women's empowerment retreat. while the girls try to survive, they are unaware that they're actually the subjects of a social experiment.

yellowjackets (horror - 2 seasons - on going)

in 1996, a new jersey high school girls' soccer team travels to seattle for a national tournament. while flying over canada, their plane crashes deep in the wilderness, and the surviving team members are left stranded for nineteen months. the series follows both their attempts to stay alive in 1996 and the lives of the survivors 25 years later, in 2021, as the events of their ordeal continue to affect them many years after their rescue.

i. freaking. LOVE. this show!!!!!!!! but it also comes with a mile long list of trigger warnings, including cannibalism, SA, abuse, animal killing, etc. maybe it's silly to point this out considering the genre of the show, but still. just be safe if you do decide to watch it!!!!!!

and this is pretty much it!!!! this is obviously not a comprehensive list, im aware i left out some popular shows and other ones that feature sapphic relationships between side characters, but these are my personal favorites and they also feel like the series where the wlw part of the story is fairly front and center, at least imho ;;;;;;;;

as a kid, his favourite stories were of pirates.

he sends weekly emails to his brothers called ‘ulstead uppity updates’ (UUU ; the ‘triple U’). these detail everything happening in royal meetings, including minutes, latest decisions, and any proposals the brothers should look over.

he bakes a lot, and is very good at decorating cupcakes and cakes. he likes to bake pies. everything he makes in excess is given to his neighbours, or to passers-by, or to local orphanages and shelters.

his two cats: vienna (the tortoiseshell) and antoinette (a black cat). both of them are rescue cats. 

you’ll see him biking around with a cat backpack on sometimes. if you wave, he’ll ring the little bike bell and smile !!

he likes to listen to music in the open, not through headphones. so he usually only plays it freely in his home. he loves music up to the early 2010s. after that it is a void.

kit charmont was raised in ulstead, france with his two little brothers (florian & philip), and their mother and father (king hubert)

in his teens: 

kit stayed mainly within ulstead, finishing all his relevant studies. 

not really a party animal, not many close friends, was known as a very polite kid but kind of quiet and kept to himself

literally the one who like stays at home doing homework for the next school year.

smartest kid in school, valedictorian, all of that. started learning languages at this time, president of the academic decathlon, hehe

in his twenties:

kit studied his undergraduate degree in arts, while also commencing more rigorous royal studies to complement his duties. 

he also began training with the royal army and navy

it’s within this decade that his mother dies.

in his 20s-30s:

kit began to want more from life. always prepared, and very self-aware, he knew that in order to be the king/brother/son that his family needed, then he needed to make sure he was okay. 

his late 20s/early 30s was a time of self-reflection and soul-searching. he started to travel alongside his royal duties, learning as much as he could of the world and ‘living’ as much as he could before he stayed permanently within ulstead’s borders.

his travels took him all over the world, but he would not have stayed for more than 2 weeks somewhere before he came back to ulstead. 

he knew his father was preparing to pass the crown to him soon, and he wanted to be ready. 

marriage ???? no !!!

he finished his travels around age 34. but just because he stopped travelling, it didn’t mean he stopped learning. this man is the literal definition of ‘lifelong learning’. much to his father’s chagrin, he was still balancing time between princely duties and his personal passions. but no one could say that the royal court ever suffered, because kit was always on time and did his homework, providing substantial discussion etc.

he got along really well with his father, until it came to the marriage thing. 

he had to marry ??? what why ??? so that someone could take care of him ??? not right now ://

but then ella ....

you know the story. the beautiful maiden in the gorgeous dress, attending the royal ball in ulstead. no one knows who she is, but look! she’s caught the crown prince’s eye. who was she!

heart-eyes. heart-eyes EVERYWHERE.

he’s not sure he fell in love, but he had never been more ready to fall in love than at that moment. he would have leapt into love for her.

BUT THEN MALEFICENT #$%^$

she knows what she did !!!! >:(((

now the charmonts are in elias. 

kit was the last one to leave ulstead. he understood the need to protect his brothers, but he couldn’t fathom why his father wanted him to escape too. who would be left to protect their kingdom? who would be the one to come up with a plan? his father’s aging advisors? that snivelly Grand Duke??

and by last to leave, i mean he left a few days after his brothers. he fought tooth and nail with his father that he should stay. tried every trick in the book. but eventually, he surrendered to his father’s desperation.

he’s been at elias now for at least a 1.5 years. he was there for the big battle with hades and maleficent (let’s just say he played a super small role and didn’t do much other than general fighting).

he lives in an apartment all by himself. and two cats: vienna & antoinette. they have lil cat backpacks.

he has no horse :(( he has a car here, but mainly rides his bike around elias. 

he spends his days doing a ‘work from home’ situation, still attending royal meetings and fulfilling his duties. things have recently become more difficult due to his father’s exhausted state. it’s hard to be semi-king of your kingdom when you’re an ocean away.

other things he does in elias:

volunteers time with different organisations, such as orphanages, homeless shelters, and fundraising events

he started the ‘chatty cafe’ in the community centre. on tuesday and thursday afternoons, you get to just sit and chat about anything, and there’s free coffee, tea, and snacks. kit is always there, without fail, to chat to anyone who needs it.

bit of a good samaritan around elias, just known for doing nice things like helping someone with their groceries, paying for the items of the people in the queue, getting a cat out of a tree hehe

[ MENTAL STATE ]

kit has always done very well with like self care and all that. 

but being stuck in elias makes him restless. he’s not sure if he wants to make a life here. he’s got his cats, he’s got his hobbies, but it feels like the longest business trip in the world. and the worst part is, he’s not meant to act like a prince here.

they’re meant to be ‘in hiding’ technically, so he introduces himself as only ‘kit’. and it comes with its perks — he has to admit it’s a little freeing to now have that time he used to crave. the time to just be whoever he wanted to be. only it came a decade too late because he literally just got into the rhythm of being an almost-king in ulstead, and now he has to be .... HIDING ????

being in hiding from a witch, being kept away from his beloved home country .... this was NOT in his ten-year plan.

he’s so proud of being a prince, he loves his kingdom so much. WHY CAN’T HE JUST GO HOME !!!!!

on the family front: he and florian are tense atm (have been for a few years now), and ... kit doesn’t know how to fix it :((

he’s going to defeat maleficent if it’s the last thing he does honestly

he wants to learn more about magic, or at least request the help and assistance of magic-users who could know something to combat/defend against maleficent

then he’s going back to ulstead

neighbours : want some free food ? need some pet-sitting done ? nervous to talk to the land-lord and need some help ? kit is your guy. his apartment building is a bit ‘posh’ and on the rich side. 

chatty cafe : as explained above, the chatty cafe is a thing he started in the community centre. every tuesday and thursday afternoon he and other volunteers sit down and chat with anyone who needs it; there’s free tea, coffee, and snacks.

stranger in need, is a friend indeed : kit doesn’t shy away from asking if someone needs assistance. there’s very little he can’t do. study help? yes. language help? yes. assistance with navigating forms and paperwork? YES. 

did someone say ... prince charming ? : similar to the above but more the ‘damsel in distress’ route hehe. here is literally prince charming. can end up hilarious, serious, dramatic, sad, you name it. not necessarily romantic. ( any gender !!! :3 )

you’ve got a friend in me : kit has never had ... uhh ... friends. the closest people to him are his brothers, and the captain of ulstead. he needs people that he interacts with as just himself, not as someone helping out or doing something. people he can chill with — and honestly, they need to make him chill.

Gentleman Jack

Watching Gentleman Jack season two with Head Millennial is a real delight because we are very similar types of Geek.  We keep pausing to discuss clothing details and history.  We have been tracking the spread of Jacquard weaving as if it were another character.  Today we solved a mystery involving the transition from fixed to collapsible parasol, Compared and contrasted the two farmer homes we spend a lot of time in in the shoe and how their matriarchs dress, and spent a stupid amount of time trying to track down the real world transition from small workshop jacquard weaving versus factory jacquard weaving.  (Don’t judge us it has a huge impact on price and availability).  This doesn't include all the times we stopped for character analysis.  

I think the costuming and set dressing in Gentleman Jack may be as deep as in Black Sails.

One of the things we noticed in the episode we watched Saturday was that Ann walker had the same type of super fashionable extremely expensive jacquard weave shawl with the wide double trim in orange and black.  we'd noticed it first because we've been watching how Anne Lister's sister went from a touch of orange in the first episode of season two to larger pieces and by the episode in question she had a whole plaid dress with the same orange in it which was doubly exciting as we've also been tracking the spread of plaids and things like Anne Lister adding subtle plaids and trims the happier she gets and the more settled with Ann Walker as well as adding cravats to match her wife's dresses and the changes in the way Ann Walker is dressing and...  

Anyway, we've been paying extra attention to orange things of a particular colour in dress and set design, and shawls, and jacquard, you follow?  So there's a scene where Anne Lister goes to chat with her beloved aunt up in the aunt's room.  The bed is in the foreground and the spread is that orange with an insanely expensive wide double jacquard trim draped casually across the bottom.  Head Millennial lost his mind.  See, the aunt hardly ever leaves her room, but she has all that expensive lace in her widow's cap and collar, as we had previously observed.  It's not for show, because basically only the family see her.  It's for love.  They love her so much they by her expensive imported fashionable things because she would like them.

I had to pause again about a minute later because I was like, "Wait a minute!  Did they buy the shawls on the trip to the continent?"  And we lost our minds all over again.  Paris was the center of the jacquard craze, and we know they stopped in Paris first.  We are bettering Anne bought three shawls as souvenir gifts: One for her sister, one for her Aunt, and one for her beloved wife, who likely picked out all three as they are to her taste!  It's such a small detail, but so human and character appropriate.  Maybe Ann was buying one for herself and Anne asked, "Do you think my aunt and sister would like something similar?”  I don't know, but it's clever the way so many of the little costume choices are clever.

I could fall into an exegesis rabbit hole again, if I'm not careful.

So this is why we are taking so long to watch a show we've both been anticipating since season one.

We had a smaller turnout at Monday night’s rehearsal (thank you for letting us know you couldn’t be there) but what we lacked in quantity more than made up for in the quality of the singing, AND we sang a new song I know you’re all going to love! There can’t be many people who haven’t heard of Gentleman Jack, the TV show based on the  life of the famous nineteenth century lesbian landowner Anne Lister.

A song of the same name written by folk duo O’Hooley and Tidow played out over the closing credits of the show. There are 3 YouTube clips for you to enjoy: the first one is an interview with O’Hooley and Tidow on BBC North two years ago giving the background on the TV show and the song Gentleman Jack they had written some years earlier. The second clip is a performance of the song by the duo at Downend Folk Club, with an explanation of how they came to write the song, and finally clip number three is a performance of the song by London-based queer women’s a cappella vocal group The Syncing Violets. Enjoy!

I’m also including a song sheet with the lyrics of Gentleman Jack so you can familiarise yourself with the words before we sing it together next Monday.

Did you like the second season of gentleman jack?

fair question, it did feel a bit wonky. too much focus on the politics all around but then again i sort of appreciate that they didn't shy away from the fact that anne lister was a tory. like, tbh, this season solidified that this is a story about anne lister specifically, and she was a complicated woman, with many faults of her own including hooking up with her ex again and that (admittedly fantastic acting) scene with marian about her choice to marry that nobody.

but then i also really got into the show bc of the all around FULL on stereotypical dreamy love story between her and ann walker. and they delivered the same feeling only once for me, when anne walks out to see ann painting that ruin. i wanted far more of those moments.
