I’ve come across the “amy has an incest kink” line several times and it baffles me so much… the first time I saw it I hadn’t read worm yet, just knew a little bit about it secondhand, and wanted to make a joke along the lines of “hey it’s not very nice to amy to imply that she’s attracted to victoria for her sister role instead of who she is as a person 😔” but having read all the way up to arc 18 it actually stuns me how amy never once openly thinks of or refers to victoria in sexual terms — it’s always framed as this kind of indistinct hopeless adoration, or obsessive romantic fervor, but it’s never explicitly sexual. her desire to touch manifests as hugging, holding — never kissing. (unless that happens later, but I’m guessing it doesn’t, and I think it’s still significant that it doesn’t happen at any of the major climactic moments for them.) this isn’t to say I don’t think there are sexual feelings there, but they’re clearly terrifying or shameful enough to be buried even deeper than the rest of it.

overall it’s this fascinating war between purity and disgust raging in amy’s head: the love she defends is a chaste, idealized sort, but she finds it impossibly filthy at the same time not because of her own desire, but because of the context it exists in. she wants victoria to be her sister and she wants victoria to be her love — the dissonance there isn’t appealing to her, it tears her apart. all the more because victoria can never be her real sister (not by blood relation rules) and can never be her real love (because amy’s feelings will never truly be returned). it’s called perpetual unfulfillment, and nothing about it is sexy to her. I cannot stress enough how much this is not sexy to her.

The teenage poisonous murder bean is just a stand in for the brother Gong Shangjue lost, now I almost feel bad for him.

Also he gets reminded of the harsh reality that his boyhood is almost over and that his best gege forever is getting married.

There is probably some subtext on young men fulfilling their duty towards their family after fooling around with people of their preferred gender(s) but dangai is banned so no this is about teenage poisonous murder bean being unhappy about losing his privileged position in Shangjue's household and getting to spend less time with him. We do not know his biological family but hanging out with gloomy Shangjue seems a lot more fun to him than being at the Zhi residence. And then during the Lantern Festival to drive the point home Gong Yuanzhi yet again gets reminded, that he doesn't have exclusive access to his favorite person any more.

He goes home to figure out what the two brides are up to instead of celebrating with the other inhabitants of the Zhi residence. Which is really bleak considering that he is the head of the lineage and should have some fun too.

Meanwhile Shangjue has a lovely 6D chess game Lantern Festival date with Shangguan.

The whole coffin of Andy and Leyley discourse is kind of exhausting.

I kinda thought I would easily find a discussion about the actual plot but it's under mountains of pro vs anti ship discourse when that is really only once facet of the story not the main focus (Obviously their relationship as a whole is a core theme but you know you can kinda choose where you want to take it as of now.)

I think both sides are prone to the worst and it in the end turns into this dunking contest rather than really talking about the core themes as whole. Often media literacy will be applied to people taking things too seriously but I think another side of the coin to this is people not taking things seriously enough to discuss it in a way that honors the effort that goes into the artistry of plot development and character dynamics.

Plots are suppose to invoke genuine feelings and it's good to discuss that and why. Wether disgust, tears etc those are genuine feelings being evoked and people should be able to express that. It means the work of art was done well.

People should also be able to talk about their fascination of taking the incest route for those too it is another fucked up level to how these characters further fall from grace another nail in the coffin so to say and they should be able to do that without being witch hunted.

My thought to that is I can understand why people would be more disgusted at the incest. There is no gun to their head about it. They had to cannibalize the dude they were starving, they had to kill those people for various reasons. People genuinely able to contemplate these things more because they find themselves more likely to be forced to do this in dire situations vs the incest. It doesn't take much for that to click me thinks.

People can further identify with killing for loved ones rather than getting it on with them it is that simple 🤣.

So many thoughts but I gotta go back to the business that pays me...which is my ikemen.
