I’m trying to start a collection of every xenofiction book from a cats POV that I can find!! this is my criteria list:
older middle-grade and up fiction stories (maybe some exceptions for children's books if I really like them)
Mostly or only cat POV, not stories about people with cat sidekicks
about actual cats, not a human that shapeshifts into a cat, nor cat-like two-legged humanoids
Focusing on domestic cats and maybe small wild cats, not big cats
It doesn’t have to be a traditionally published book, but it does have to be something completed that I can buy a copy of
Graphic novels count!
These are the ones I know so far, please let me know if you have any more that I can add! (not listing every book’s sequels, series are presumed to be lumped together)
(also note: I have not read most of these books yet, so I can’t say what kind of graphic/sensitive content they may or may not have. I'm just trying to make as complete a list as I can for personal reference)
Warrior Cats (obviously, this one is a free space)
Varjak Paw -- S.F Said
Tailchaser’s Song -- Tad Williams
The Wild Road -- Gabriel King
Catwings -- Ursula K. Le Guin
Stray -- A.N Wilson
The Book of Night with Moon -- Diane Duane
The Wildings -- Nilanjana Roy
The Tygrine Cat -- Inbali Iserles
The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents -- Terry Pratchett
The Familiars -- Adam Jay Epstein
In the Long Dark -- Brian Carter
Felidae -- Akif Pirinçci. Unfortunately! but I don’t want to talk about him and no one should buy his work. just adding so people know i’m aware of this book already
The Cats of Roxville Station -- Jean Craighead George
The Traveling Cat Chronicles -- Hiro Arikawa
Blitzcat -- Robert Westall
Cat House -- Michael Peak
Cats in the City of Plague -- A.L Marlow
Guardian Cats and the Lost Books of Alexandria -- Rahma Krambo
Cat on the Edge -- Shirley Rousseau Murphy
I Am a Cat -- Natsume Sōseki
The Alchemist’s Cat -- Robin Jarvis
The Stink Files -- Jennifer L. Holm & Jonathan Hamel
I, Scheherazade: Memoirs of a Siamese Cat -- Douglass Parkhirst
The Mouse Butcher -- Dick King-Smith
Heroes Rising: Book One of Catmage: Genesis -- Meryl Yourish

one thing that kind of irks me is the amount of ppl who like....dont understand how little some of the erin hunters have to do with warriors. like.....g*llian ph*llip was an erin, yes, but she never wrote for warriors. she wrote for survivors. and tui sutherland sometimes uses the erin hunter name, but the only warriors book she ever wrote on her own was secrets of the clans, a field guide; shes mainly an editor for the main series and an author on survivors. and then there are the erins that never get mentioned at all, like clarissa hutton (editor/novella writer), inbali iserles (survivors writer), and rosie best (worked on one survivors book and one bamboo kingdom book). like.....not all erins are authors for warrior cats. PLEASE educate urself on all the erins and their involvement w the series

Into the Wild
So… what’s the deal with these cat books anyway?
If you’ve spent a decent chunk of time on the internet, you’ve probably encountered them in some form at least once. While by no means the largest fandom on the internet, nor even the largest book series fandom, Warriors fans are pretty prolific, particularly on art-sharing websites and on YouTube.
The series itself began in 2003 with the release of Into the Wild. Since then, the series has only grown tremendously, with over 90 additional chapter books, graphic novels, super editions, guide books, ebook exclusives, and more (quick note for your own reference: I myself managed to read an even 60 of the main series books before I finally gave up). The children’s book series is written by Erin Hunter, a pseudonym shared by a team of writers and editors, currently consisting of Victoria Holmes, Kate Cary, Cherith Baldry, Tui Sutherland, Inbali Iserles, and Clarissa Hutton, and formerly Gillian Philip (fired after a run-in with what she called the “woke warriors” of publishing—more on that at another time). Different books were worked on by different members of the team, so the pseudonym was devised in order to keep them all organized together when placed on a library shelf.

The books are about feral cats who have created an organized society of four Clans (each with around 15-20 cats) for themselves in the woods, complete with traditions, customs, a code of rules to live by, and a religion to follow. Built around this general premise, the series has since followed multiple plotlines, and many different characters have starred as the reader’s point of perspective in each book or arc.
These books hooked their claws into multiple generations of young readers. People found enjoyment in discussing their favorite characters, predicting future events, creating fan artworks, arguing over their favorite Clan and territory, and so much more. Furthermore, the basic premise outline left plenty of room for people to devise their own characters, Clans, and stories. Communities popped up around the internet, filled with people’s original Warrior Cats characters, sharing them with each other, creating artwork and animations, writing fan fictions, drawing comics, and developing stories. Roleplay forums related to these original characters (OCs) began appearing everywhere that they could, anywhere that had even the barest technological capability for it: DeviantArt and Wattpad comments sections, Minecraft multiplayer servers, online MMOs like Animal Jam, even MIT’s Scratch programming website. It was everywhere.
And it still is.
I can’t account for DeviantArt or Scratch anymore; it’s been a long time since I’ve traversed through those forums. But I can say with certainty that the Warriors Community has not stopped talking and creating and sharing what they’ve made since it began. The books are one thing, but it’s the fandom I really find fascinating, even all these years since leaving it.
There’s not really any way to consume every single bit of content created by the fans of the Warrior Cats books; there’s just too much of it. I’ll give you as big and as varied a sample as I can at a later time. There’s some extremely remarkable things out there that they’ve created. But the truth of the matter is that not every piece of media made in Warrior Cats’ honor necessarily deserves to be consumed, nor every creator supported. The series is not free from controversies, ranging from accusations of cultural appropriation, to zoophilia, to ableism, and more, and I hope to discuss some of those, as many as I can, as well.
Long story short: there’s a lot to say about the Warriors fandom. Let’s get into it!

I enjoy Warrior Cats and Survivors (they have the same creators) too.
Do you have some favorite characters from Warrior Cats?
Yep, The Erin Hunter team is responsible for both! Though I don't think it's always the same people on both teams. Like apparently this person Inbali Iserles wrote three of the Survivors books, but hasn't been involved with Warrior Cats. Gillian Philips wrote a lot of the Survivors' books as well, and she hasn't been associated with Warrior Cats. In general, while Survivors and Warrior Cats are under the same brand, they're not really created by the same teams. The turn-around time on the books is too short for that, honestly. I know with Warrior Cats, new main books come out every six months.
As for my favorite Warrior Cats characters, I really like Brightheart, Squirrelflight, Jayfeather, and Alderheart (who really needs to get to be a dad, he tried his best with Twigkit but wasn't really allowed be her main parent, given that he was still an apprentice and a medicine cat). I like a lot of Warrior Cats in some capacity though.
With the most recent arc, I think Nghtheart is the most interesting character, though I dunno whether it's a good interesting or a bad interesting yet. Frostpaw needs a freaking break, and Sunbeam... yeah I'm not all that invested in her right now.

Hi Mandy! I hope you're doing great :) I saw the post you reblogged about the x-files, and it got me very intrigued. I never watched it before, and I was wondering if you think that starting now would be a good idea? I guess both in terms of starting a show that was shot mainly in the 90s (too many of my childhood favorites have become unwatchable, sigh) and in terms of its general mood - is it very stressful/gloomy? You seem to like it a lot, and so far you recs have been the best. thanks! xx
In terms of watchability, yes, I think it absolutely stands up. I haven’t done a full series rewatch in a long time (years) so there might be moments or episodes - honestly I could probably research it for you - but I think overall it stands up.
But in terms of mood... hmm. I mean, it is stressful/gloomy sometimes, but in ore of an escapist way than a realist way. They investigate supernatural mysteries and the paranormal so it’s not the gritty sort of real life shit we are facing today. Almost all the episodes especially early on are most motw (monster of the week) so there’s a conclusion at the end of them. Sometimes it delves into arc (the underlying story that spans the whole series) but that’s sprinkled in throughout.
Hit me up if you want more details about it!!
