like out of all the many, many traumas ive given elspeth my favorite has gotta be the deep roads lol. and specifically the way she never really got OUT of them. yeah so maybe her body did but not HER. shes still down there with ruck and helspith every time she closes her eyes. and during future expeditions when she goes down into the deep roads for real, it doesnt feel like some horrible nightmare it feels like REALITY and its the surface and love and warmth and alistair thats nothing more than a pleasant dream. one shes always going to wake up from. bc even in her happiest moments she's never not aware of the darkspawn digging up towards her just a few miles under her feet. and never not feeling the eyes of the deep roads looking at her, gleefully waiting for her, and knowing its not going anywhere

#i love shale but for elspeth's worldstate i dont recruit her bc im so obsessed w the dynamic of it being elspeth/alistair/oghren/the dog lol #oc: elspeth #tay plays dao #she got SEVERE shell shock being down there in the dead trenches after the realization that came from helspith's poem #why shes never seen any female darkspawn and why there apparently arent as many female wardens either #and like. Understanding that death is the absolute best case scenario for her. #alistair had to 100000% step up as the leader because she was completely out of commission. barely able to breathe let alone fight or lead #going from this unstoppable warrior who NEVER loses her nerve or control on a battlefield #to nearly dying to the broodmother bc she was so fucking terrified. bc all she could see was her own fate mirrored back at her #finally FINALLY understanding what it means to be a grey warden. and then trying to reject that reality with her entire body and soul #she pulls herself out of it enough to get out alive but she never had a moment of like... triumph over the deep roads where she had a burst #of courage and saved the day or whatever. thats not usually how trauma works and so alistair carried them thru that #thru the broodmother and the anvil and branka and back to orzammar just as elspeth was beginning to put herself back together #afterwards the lack of closure to what was one of her ''weakest'' lowest moments rly weighed her down with guilt and shame #and its only a year later during awakening when she finally reconciles with having NO choice but to go back into the deep roads #and being able to kill the mother. THAT helped. that restored some small part of her #gave her the strength to start going back down there when the need arose. resigned to an early death but ready to put up a fight #but ye. still such a fundamentally devastating thing she went thru which altered her entire personality to the point where she starts fully #embracing being a warden (bc how can someone who's seen what shes seen and done what shes done be anything else???) #and INSISTING alistair take the throne despite having always been supportive of his desire not to. even if it means she loses him. #bc its a last ditch effort to save him from the fate she's completely surrendered herself to #sigh. this game man. #i need dadw to Confirm that the grey wardens have found a cure and alistair and hof are safe because jesus christ. my girl NEEDS a win

y'know, I've been seeing a lot more posts talking about how fanfic, specifically, puts characters into boxes and takes away the nuance of them, and while I think that's an important discussion to have, I also find it quite perplexing? Like, these posts seem to come from people who don't even, or maybe very rarely, consume fics in the first place, and I say that because, if you do consume fics semi-regularly, you kind of learn? how to gage what the stories and characterisation are going to be like based on the tags and summary? Sometimes, you do have to step into the fic to figure it out, but it hardly takes very long to realise if it gels with you or not. Idk, it's not anything serious or important, but it does give me... "girl, what were you doing at the devil's sacrament" vibes, you know?

#this gets posted here because my main has mutuals (whom i still love v much) who are part of the girls suspiciously at the sacrament #fanfiction #ao3 #i feel like the post doesnt properly address what i mean. i understand that these posts arent talking about fics exactly but rather how #mischaracterisation in fics permeates into how characters are portrayed in the fandom at large but even then it's a bit. like i dont think #you can put that all on the fics/writers (and these posts usually do) alone?? like yes the mischaracterisation is more prominent in fics #by virtue of their medium but if it's resonating with artists and other creators then that's clearly indicative of a general #cognisance issue in the fandom??? and like. maybe it's because tumblr is the only socmed site i use but i dont find it difficult to curate #my fandom experience. people generally know how to use tags and while the sudden influx of x reader stuff for every single character isnt #something im fond of either they're generally good at tagging their stuff. it's annoying but you can blacklist that. you can. #also fic isnt like art where you look at it and you've seen it. you have to engage with a fic to understand so then it /really/ feels like #girl what were you doing at the devil's sacrament to me. idk this post isnt complaining about fandom mischaracterisation in general #i complain about that all the time but more so the inclination to put it on fics & their writers. because if you know how to move through #fic spaces and read the summaries and tags #you can generally find works that are really really good. could you argue they're rare? sure. but saying all fics propogate #mischaracterisation is just... a lie? #this got so long. im not even really bothered or annoyed by it im just confused #these are also often the people who espouse rhetoric about being unafraid to post cringe and embracing your weirdness #and it's like. okay do you want people to post unabashedly or do you want them to shut up. #anyway. back to our regularly scheduled programme now

I am begging on bended knee for fic writers to please pretty please remember to add the modern era tag on AO3 whenever it's relevant (and preemptively thanking everyone who does remember to add it, please take whatever you want from the candy jar on my desk). I'm deep in ofmd now but this could apply to so many other fandoms too and it's so, so important for filtering.

When a story's canonical setting is something so removed from the world we live in now, some readers are either looking for modern era stuff or Very Much Not, and having such a potentially polarizing tag on a story will help readers who want that to find it and help others filter it out. Add it to stuff like SMAUs, coffee shop AUs, etc as well so readers won't feel like they have to add loads of other tags to their filters as well.

You want readers to find your stuff and they want to find it too! It's a win-win for everyone.

Seeing people writing about, constantly getting excited about, or (within fandom) making headcanons about characters who shy away from physical contact with the help of their friends and/or romantic interest can be... frustrating as a touch averse person.

Give me stories where friends and/or significant others respect boundaries and check in with less touchy characters.

Give me stories where they're allowed to say no when someone wants to hug them or hold their hand.

Give me stories that don't inherently treat a character shying away from touch as just being touched starved and needing a little love to fix them.

Sometimes people just have sensory issues and need their boundaries respected.

#dog books #I've read a few famous dogs books #and they're usually quite dull #but this one was really interesting because the writer connected different stories and took philosophical strolls #I didn't agree with her on many many points #but I really enjoyed reading all the linking thoughts and ideas #I find it very interesting the way that writers like this will confess quite openly their special love for their dog #and they'll write about the details in which love for dogs has been historically ridiculed and minimised #and yet they still feel the need to be defensive and to project this sort of 'not like other girls' attitude #personally I lean wholeheartedly into the stereotype that I love my dogs 'too much' #it does not bother me at all to be in any way associated with the historical pastime of women who love tiny creatures #who treat them with kindness and care and humour #my current life phase is: this is who I am #I have embraced it completely #I have very little room for shame in my life
