3. screenshot or description of the worst take you've seen on tumblr
I think one of the worst ones that crossed my dash in recent memory was a Spiderverse one in which someone claimed Hobie would be a secret Swiftie. Hobie, a Black punk from the 1970s. Yeah. That one just showed absolutely no awareness whatsoever. I haven't seen Spiderverse but I know enough to know why that is an abysmally bad take. Please, person who wrote that one, for the love of all that is good in this world, try listening to some Black punk musicians. Start with Poly Styrene and her band X-Ray Spex and go from there. There are so many amazing artists you'll discover. Not every character you like has to like the same exact things as you, and sometimes characters liking different things broadens your own horizons and introduces you to something you end up liking!
10. worst part of fanon
The way characters get boiled down to one or two character traits drives me up the wall. A well-written character is complex and interesting the same way real people are, and that's why we feel compelled to experience their stories. But in fandom spaces so often these characters get reduced to one-trick ponies - the chaotic one, the girlboss, the one with less braincells than an orange cat, the grumpy one, the sunshine one, etc.
People contain multitudes. A good character does too, because then we want to read about them because they're more interesting and aren't a cardboard cutout. So why do we simplify things in fanon so much instead of enjoying the nuance and complications that make great characters, well, great?
13. worst blorboficiation
I feel like it's cheating to throw Submas in here again, but the way people reduce Ingo and Emmet to stereotypes or one-note characters (see above) or wildly misportray them to the point where I can't recognize them actually deeply alienates me from engaging with a lot of other people who like them. I've mentioned many times that they were the first time I truly saw myself in fiction - they're both so much like me that it's uncanny - and when I see things like that, it's a good indicator of how these same people would see me, so I steer clear to avoid being hurt.
22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
In terms of Pokemon, my immersion is immediately broken if I see something that makes it clear that the creator didn't actually research the NYC Subway. I'm down there five days a week at this point, sometimes more, and I know it like the back of my hand because I also happen to be a massive railfan. There are a lot of elements of the Battle Subway that line up to real-life stuff and I get so excited about them and then people just...don't do anything with it and I just can't get into it after that.
Also, I think in general in fandom everyone sleeps on so many characters in favor of a select few and you could really do so much with some of them but people just don't. Many of these characters are women and/or not white and this is not a coincidence.

One drawback of having the stereotypical autistic memory is thinking you might be missing something important because a date used to be significant, like I just sat for a moment thinking "October 7th sounds notable, shit have I forgotten something" and actually no it's notable because I saw the Poly Styrene documentary on October 7th last year, nothing is happening today but my brain never cleared the note

5 books I intend on reading in 2022
Tagged by @amandine-henrys, thank you very much 💓 I was reading your choices and they seem so interesting, I used to read a lot of fiction when I was younger and then I stopped, I don’t know why. Maybe it’s time to challenge my picks in 2022 so I’m gonna save the name of some of those books. I usually read poetry, I love to come back to certain poems when I feel like it or compare different authors and situations, I also love biographies (painters and musicians) and essays. It’s difficult to make a list so I’m gonna name the ones I already bought.
1. Orlam - PJ Harvey. I pre-ordered this book of poems by Polly Jean Harvey, an artist I love. She’s an incredible musician and inspiration to many.
2. Tenement Kid - Bobby Gillespie. Another musician, Bobby is from Scotland and he’s the singer of Primal Scream. It’s a book of memories.
3. Revenge of the She-Punks : A Feminist Music History from Poly Styrene to Pussy Riot - Vivien Goldman. Vivien is a former musician who became a journalist, the title says it all, I know most of the bands and the history but I’m excited to read everything from her point of view.
4. All About Love - bell hooks. I love bell hooks and the topic of love and how it’s perceived from different sides is something I’ve been thinking a lot the last few months. I have a lot of insecurities and I’ve been feeling that the way I see certain things seem to be really out of (what is considered) the modern connections, so kinda unconsciously, I’ve been looking for something to reassure what I feel. No one better than her to offer some clarity. I’m also reading another book from an argentine author that navigates the same topic (the title is very cheesy and doesn’t reflect the content).
5. Things We Lost in the Fire - Mariana Enriquez. This is a novel by an argentine author, I think it’s a terror novel. As I said before, I’m trying hard to expand my selections, I don’t remember the last novel I’ve read so I guess this could be a start. It has great reviews and Mariana has lots of recognitions lately.
Bonus: Nina Simone’s Gum by Warren Ellis. I think this is a book of memories as well, I love Warren (another musician lol), I haven’t bought this one yet.
I don’t know who to nominate for this so if anyone feels like listing their 2022 picks feel free to do it, I nominate you all.

representation scares me.
No one can deny that representation is important. I think we all know that feeling that comes with seeing someone in a film or tv show that resonates with us, and it’s such a feeling of comfort and validation; to have that experience as a  minority is even more powerful because you are rejected based on the powers that be and the existence of representation in art disputes that. We all know this, minority or not, we often find that the most poignant pieces of media are the ones that represent either a fantasy version of ourselves or consul a part of us that we are embarrassed or ashamed of.
That being said, there's also something so terrifying this need for representation in media, for Hollywood to provide validation of peoples sense of self, because it relies on cooperate power for people to feel comfortable with who they are and their place in the world. We can sometimes forget, from the outside, that movies are the (unnatural) overlap of industry and art, but they are, and their many corruptions are disguised by this, but I’m getting ahead of myself.
Its really frightening to me to live in a time were in order to secure peoples roll and protection in society it must be granted by cooperate power, because those mega corporation have no innate moral drive. Not to say that there are not people in media that don't care on an individual basis, but on a larger scale, the system of media we’re in is not designed with any socio-political or humanitarian intent. It’s designed to create profit, that's the only driving factor. The common denominator in anything that gets published widespread is that it is profitable and so all this push for representation in media, and the necessity (because based on the way we experience reality at this time, it is a necessity) of these requests for representation in media being met is entirely dependent on whether or not it’s profitable. Whether or not a group of people’s human dignity is confirmed is determined by what is profitable. And there’s no guarantee that ii will become profitable, ever.
You could say, that surly I am exaggerating. Surly some media is made without the sole intent of profit, I mean come on, that’s how indie movies and art films, and political pieces are made. But you know what all of those types of films are? Niche. You have to look for them, hard. And I’m not even just talking about movies, what about Youtubers? Influencers? The more radical the ideas, the more niche the marginalized the group being advocated on behalf of, the harder it is to find content about them. The harder it is for young people looking to better understand themselves to find it.
Now that I have brought up the idea of self recognition through the other, I have to answer the question of “if you don’t like representation then how are these kids you’re so concerned about going to discover who they are?” Well lads, the concept of the self was not invented by mass media.
People of every minority, every experience have existed for as long as humanity has, do you think they couldn’t discover who they were? Do you think that people now who have still never been able to find themselves on a silver screen never know who they are? No.
We weren't made to live like this. We weren't meant to model ourselves after TV characters, and media personalities, and then cut away everything that doesn’t match that aesthetic. We aren't meant to look to someone else to answer all our questions about who we are.
When you look in the mirror do you see yourself / Do you see yourself on the T.V. screen / Do you see yourself in the magazine [...] / Did you do it before you read about it / Identity is the crisis can't you see
Poly-styrene, “Identity”
If we expect all possible identities and experience to be available through media, we will always be disappointed, people potential for nuance is too vast. We are only limiting our ability to understand ourselves by seeing validation.
And then there’s the before; before mass media and TV, and influencers and monetizing every single incoherent thought out of your head on twitter. And hell, before books, because yeah, they are also a way to sell the human experience.
Before all that we had folktales. A character arch populated by new details added by each teller. Stories that could be anything you wanted and had the capacity to hold every experience and feeling and question in as many ways as you want because you’re making it all up.
Have you ever told a fairytale to a child? From memory? Have you ever added little details to make the protagonist resemble them, and watched them smile sheepishly, because the clever fairy or bold knight is them? It’s magical. There’s this quote, it makes me want to breakdown and cry when I think about it,
won’t you celebrate with me what i have shaped into a kind of life? i had no model. born in babylon both nonwhite and woman what did i see to be except myself? i made it up
Lucille Clifton - song at midnight
(If you’ve stuck with me this long you many as well read the whole poem, it’s truly mesmerizing.)
I’m not saying that media is evil. Good lord, I’m not going to condemn books. But please, stop trying to find who you are by looking at pseudo-people. They are not your only options.

SOME LISTS BY DINA HORNREICH
In a not-so comprehensive (mostly desultory) manner I have thrown this list of current zeitgeisty kinds of things that I encountered in one way or another that had various compelling bits, chunks, and other substantial nuggets (if not their complete entirety) of a musical persuasion that provided something engaging, amusing, enlightening, challenging, discordant, or otherwise worthwhile for my freaky mind, body, and soul to chew on in this last year of 2019.  And to go full circle around in the weird miasmic disorientations of blogs/zines, and every tool in between...I could mention the writers at Bust, Bitch, Pitchfork, even… DAGGER. But credit for discoverability also includes the vending platforms of Spotify/Bandcamp/Apple Music/Soundcloud themselves (and their haunted algorithms) as well as musicians’ various social media counterparts (which may or may not include their publicists) on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc. (and where does YouTube fit in exactly?) which means the industry will eventually eat itself. Happy New Year, ladies and germs. Who knows what the next decade will bring? Whatever it may be, let it be progress rather than random changes for no apparently good reasons.

Florida’s Best Live Acts of 2019
With a new year, and new decade ahead of us, we recap the best Live Acts Statewide of this past year
Tumblr media
Florida- 2019 has been a prosperous music for local music in the state.
With a plethora of albums, EP’s and concerts released before the new decade, in addition to new acts emerging from the already electrified soil, we decided to take our focus on the medium that we believe best proves the true mettle of a band: our selections of the Top 10 Live Acts in Florida.
This proved to be a much harder list than expected, with a great many acts having captured our heart in 2019. However, we stand by this list, and feel that these acts should be the ones you keep your mind, ears and excited soul on in 2020…
The Guttertones (Rock)
Tumblr media
(photo: Jenelle DeGuzman)
Having formed in just 2019, the duo, composed of Brennan Curtin (drums) and Adam Sheetz (guitar/vocals) perform with the intensity of an act that have been honing their craft for 10 years. Debuting at Bumblefest, their live performances are something inexplicably powerful; with just a guitar, drums and a vox microphone, they can draw in a crowd like flies to sugar, and it helps that the sound coming from the amps is a honey suckle drawl of perfect Southern inspired rock meets the grit of Detroit distortion, all wrapped up in West Palm Beach flair.
They are an act that increasingly better themselves after every viewing, and for that reason and many more, we believe the duo to be one of the best on this list.

Spirit & The Cosmic Heart (Dreampop/Shoegaze)
Tumblr media
(photo: Roberto Badillo)
The Lakeland based act has been one we’ve kept on both your radar, and ours, since early this year. Churning and evolving like the Atlantic itself, the group made continued evolving and with each new emergence, seem to just keep getting better.
With their 2nd EP, “Memories” released mid-2019, they are one of the few acts, both locally and internationally, that can sound just as good on record and yet somehow, different. Our best example of this being our personal favorite, “Endlessly”. While the track is an intense Cure meets Mama’s and Papa’s build-up of dreamy romance live, the 5 piece have created an almost alternate reality version of the track on record that explodes just the same, in a different way. And it’s truly the best way to describe the act; something haunting that sparks something individually different, upon every song and every viewing.

Donzii (Post-Punk)
Tumblr media
(Photo: Jen.cray)
Another of our unabashedly favorite local acts, experiencing the 5 piece in any of the five senses, is akin to visiting one of the great art museums of the world- each time.
With visuals being orchestrated by frontwoman Jenna Balfe, a whirlwind mixture of Siouxsie Sioux and Poly Styrene, every performance Donzii puts on is a different painting, in a different time, all along the already powerful hypnotic music that follows from the chemistry of the act themselves. “Sand”, to our ears, is one of the best tracks of this decade by any artist in recent memory internationally. It’s a large claim to make, but an act like Donzii truly come every once in a lifetime, and we are grateful to be living in the same era of music as this incredible band.

Jaialai (Psychedelica/Alternative)
Tumblr media

While the sound have been a local flavor favorite, we got our first powerful dose of the sound live, at 1306 Miami earlier this year and it was something unlike anything else we’ve seen. Carrying the force of a hurricane inside of a tornadic explosion of guitars, drums and build-up, the performance we viewed consisted of moshing, dreamy visuals and near Renaissance punk vibes, something that is hard to duplicate not due to the sound, but the sheer amount of power it takes to carry such a beautiful weight.
If you have the chance, we highly recommend catching this act in any venue, and watch as you leave out of breath and captivated.

The Spoondogs (Rock/Punk)
Tumblr media
The Orlando based sound helped to close out Bumblefest 2019, and demonstrated a performance so great, it never left our mind.
Take The Rolling Stones, Warsaw and just a touch of surf-esque orchestration and you have a truly potent mixture that could fit in any decade and still bring the crowd to a absolute frenzy, something they did to a full house of the Patio Stage in Respectable Street, having those in attendance so enthralled, some stood on tables just to get a glimpse of the hailstorm of guitars that the act wield so well, both live and in recording. If you’re a fan of the above examples, Robert Plant in his prime or classic punk in general, we recommend listening in all methods, ways and feelings possible.

Tape Studies (Post/Instrumental Rock)
Tumblr media
Let us tell you a story of romance, ambition, love, the feeling of falling and a thousand sunsets; or better yet, let Tape Studies do it for you. We have expressed our endless respect for the post-rock genre due the basis of composition being that of a storybooks. The unspoken words of feeling itself, and all those moments you didn’t quite know what to say, wishing instead that music would flow out of your lungs. The Northern Florida trio are this exactly, and after watching them perform at Will’s Pub, they also embody the belief that while an orchestra can fill a room, a group with passion can act as a hundred orchestras; something they do effortlessly. With a new album in the works, we greatly look forward to the opportunity of seeing the act again, and we await for you to do the same.
https://tapestudies.bandcamp.com/releases
In Motion (Post-Hardcore/Emo)
Tumblr media
While the trio have been on our list since mid-2019, they are also our pick for the Best Album of 2019. The post-hardcore genre is one that, while often seen, is very scarcely done right justice and we are proud to say that it’s one they not only excel in, but have brought back incredible light back into. Having seen the act perform as both an unplanned trio and in it’s complete package, we have been thoroughly astounded each and every performance by the wall of enormous sound the Hobe Sound based produce. It’s not hard to see the trio truly love what they do, and we love watching them.
https://inmotionfl.bandcamp.com/
Glass Body (Punk)
Tumblr media
This Miami sound is one you read about in the history books. The kind you see in black and white pictures of bands you wish you were able to see, giving performances that seem to bleed sound from image alone and you wish on the stars above you could have viewed. And we’re happy to say, you can and you must. Performing in the small, intimate space of Kismet Vintage in West Palm Beach, the trio are pure, and pardon our language, fucking amazing punk. With incredible Pixies-esque drones meets Sex Pistols explosion, frontwoman/bassist Bridget helps orchestrate performances that are a legendary joy to watch, and one we hope you’ll carve into your concert tablets in 2020…
https://glassbody.bandcamp.com/
Kalistik (Metal/Doom)
Tumblr media
(Photo: Keith McCullough)
With the debut EP freshly released, and wonderfully, darkly seductive, the Winter Haven group while fresh on our list, are not one to be taken lightly. Having made their powerful debut performance at Jessie’s Lounge (the videos of which can be seen on their Facebook page), they became one of our Florida Project acts simply due to the intensity of the performance. Bringing 70’s post-punk, doom and just the slightest touch of psychedelic elements in an impressive whirl, they are an act we cannot wait to get more in the coming year and are grateful we can jam to on our earbuds in the meantime…
https://kalistik.bandcamp.com/releases
Death of a Deity (Thrash/Metal)
Tumblr media
(Photo: Jenelle DeGuzman)
The metal scene is one that thrived in 2019, due in part of the incredible acts that have emerged in genre in the past year alone. And while our next picks have been favorites of the South Florida scene, after having the pleasure of seeing the Loxahatchee based act perform at Propaganda Lake Worth late this past year, they make our list for the sheer of power they hold in their ferocious chemistry.
With a swirling, impressive storm of guitars and Abe Cunningham meets John Bonham-esque drums, they succeed in the difficult task of checking of not just one, but all marks of a great rock show: Heavy, orchestrated chaos, headbanging worthy composition and most importantly, enjoying every moment of it, while having all those in their grasp feel the same. With a new album on the horizon, and the preview of those tracks shared during their live performances solidifying our belief in DOAD being one of the great live acts in Florida, we cannot wait to headbang again.
https://deathofadeity.bandcamp.com/
Rose Dickeson (Pop/Jazz)
Tumblr media
One of the last, great and most promising examples of the power of, to quote Prince’s album, a piano and a microphone, the effortless composition that radiates from the Port Saint Lucie duo is an unforgettable of Fiona Apple earnesty, Regina Spektor vocals and the soul of Nina Simone, they are an act that are vastly underrated and incredibly potent. If you have a chance to see the act perform, it’s one we highly advise not passing, as they offer experience in the shape of sonic roses you’ll never forget the scent of.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=op53J4l1TV4
Makoto (Instrumental/Math Rock)
Tumblr media
Our final selection for this list, will not be met with the usual “last but not least” blush response but calculated reasoning. The Southern Florida based act are the final cut on our list for the same reasoning that fireworks cap off another rotation around the Sun; for the power lightning storm that roars into the night, and what better way to describe the act than this? As we spoke of in our review of Bumblefest, we thoroughly believe that they should have been given a headline set and we believe 2020 will see them perform that slot at festivals both near and far, for the incredible, anthemic performances they emanate both in record and live. Makoto deliver the types of performances that have your feet sore from jumping, hair in a tizzy from rocking out and most importantly, leave you breathless. It’s a talent they are as skilled at as they are in composing near perfect rock orchestrations. And one we know, will leave you in awe.
https://makoto.bandcamp.com/
We hope you fill your heart with great, new and wonderful music in the new decade. And now, to quote a certain wizard, “ Let us step into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.”

ANNUAL TRIBUTE TO THE LATE, GREAT POLY STYRENE. Dublin Castle 3rd and 4th November
This festival is in its sixth year, and Polyfest 6 has to be the best to date . Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the classic X-Ray Spex album, the entire body of work was played in its entirety throughout the course of the festival.  Specific highlights include Melanie Williams’ unique symphonic version of ‘The Day The World Turned Day-Glo’, and ‘Identity’ by the enigmatic and rather brilliant Fuzzbox.
Newcomers Cherry and Peesh did a splendid acoustic work out of ‘Plastic Bag’, and Roger Waters and Suede guitarist and collaborator Jay Stapley did an absolutely fantastic blues version of the classic track ‘I Am a Poseur’.
The Rubbettes did an extraordinary version of ‘Genetic Engineering’, with Steve Etherington and his cohorts completing his set with a new wave workout of ‘Sugar Baby Love’. Another great set came from a hybrid of Modern Romance and Leyton Buzzards, whose eclectic set included an incredible version of ‘Saturday Night Beneath The Plastic Palm Trees’. A highly original rendition of a Poly Styrene classic came from Jen of The Pricillas, who belted out ‘Let’s Submerge’ against a backdrop of electronica, with Pig Bag collaborator Tony Wrafter providing crucial augmentation via his trusty and instantly recognisable saxophone.  JC Carrol of The Members, and John Perry of the Only Ones, recreated some of their hits, much to the delight of a packed audience. A fitting moment during the proceedings was a video of ‘The Train’ by Mark E Smith and Ed Blaney, sensitively produced especially for the festival by Steve Bowden the cinematic montage was a poignant tribute to another universally loved and much missed Icon. In fact, Ed Blaney divided his magnificent set between tributes to his old cohort Mark E Smith and Poly Styrene, which was an extremely moving festival segment. Another group to turn in a magnificent set were The Vapors, who did a particularly fast and furious rendition of ‘Turning Japanese’.  The Gonads also provided some tremendous humour during their loud and raucous set culminating in a well-deserved encore. Fun Boy Three and Specials Legend Neville Staple had the entire room chanting his classics, and Christina Sugary Staple performed a brilliant version of the X-Ray Spex standard ‘I Cant Do Anything’ . Other bands providing great covers included The Shakespearos, Dr the Medics, Spizzoligy, and the absolutely incredible She Robot. However it was Headliner John Otway who ultimately thrilled the crowd with his sardonic wit and catchy observational songs, thus closing the proceedings on a high! Long live the memory of the late great Poly Styrene. Long live Polyfest .  Laura Beth / November 2018
