summer 2019 anime sum-up

lmao i realized i never did this and posted the fall season b4 this.... oops

kimetsu no yaiba: tbh started out kinda meh. and now it’s turned into one of the new big shounens. i was not expecting that. nearing the end got rly good and i was rly looking forward to more episodes! tanjiro gets cooler and cooler! animation is rly nice (thanks ufotable) and the way tanjiro’s water is animated. like. aesthetic asf. it’s so good. i love black-haired emo dude and zenitsu (my spirit animal) and ofc nezuko she is adorable im c r y. side note: the hashira? i think they’re called? some of the ugliest fkn characters i’ve seen in ages like flame boy? stone boy? i HATE them. and the gem dude too like man get a new tattoo artist on god.... he needs it.,,,,,,and inosuke is so pretty it’s unfair

dr stone: ok man dr stone rly went off. tbh. i’ve always been a whore for chemistry since reading the flavia de luce series (btw, i want more books of) and watching this just tickles my noodle brain in a good way... who needs prozac when i get a shitton of serotonin from watching senku dick around.... (btw what is going on with what’s his face and the girl. yuzuriha????? i can’t remember. i love senku don’t get me wrong but i need their perspective too... bc i hate lion dude... so much.... dick....) again i will repeat that i am a whore for chemistry so i get oFF on this. backgrounds are amazing/ animation so nice n clean (most o the time lmao). i thought i would hate the black n white haired trickster boi and ms yellow ponytail and suika but no! dr stone is such a good show that they are now great, loveable characters. also i am senku and chrome’s whore so jfc. man, i love the explanations of all the chemistry shabang, but some things i think would be better if explained! like senku doing physical labour at the beginning- ex. making all those pots and building that shit by hisself. i know he weak af. yes he smart but like. construction? difficult. pottery? even for me the artist . difficult. and that shed of his was filled to the brim. HOW. anyways, i love this so much i am crying constantly

just realized i didnt need to write about dr stone. oh well.

danmachi 2: wtf yo. haruhime is so pretty but not a fan of her personality! bell still cute af and still don’t rly like aiz! animation good as always, and my god i shit myself whenever the argonaut theme starts up bc that is ? one of the best pieces of non-sawano hiroyuki pieces i’ve ever heard? addicted to it. and the opening! love the dynamics, the brief ‘rain’ scenes like when mikoto slashes the raindrops and just her motion basically? as an animator that is what i aspire to accomplish because i just love that. tiny little scene.

arifureta: this would have been so much better had they dragged out mc’s op-ifying process! made him suffer more! i explained this briefly in my ‘first thoughts’ post for this season, but story-wise and pacing-wise his power-up could have been so much more deserved and gratifying. think shield hero- loser suffers, gets angry, slowly builds up power in an epic payoff! would have been so epic too. and also if they’d made his gained powers less.... crazy nerfed. again: HE SHOULD HAVE SUFFERED MORE AND THIS WOULD HAVE MADE A BETTER SHOW. harem thoughts: yue- meh. sucky char honestly. shea- my fav girl, she is a great character don’t judge- sexy and love her personality and love her character design and love how much fanservice she gets lol. panty flash ftw. dragon girl- discount darkness honestly , tho nice design. and mermaid girl- yuck, annoying, DO NOT like the ‘papa’ trope! (ahem sao.) it’s gross. also just fuck mc’s classmates honestly- paladin dude sucks ass, healer girl OOF that last episode ruined her, samurai girl is ok i guess. hate ai-sensei too like shut UPP annoying ass HOEEEEE (postscript: opening=very epic too)

kanata no astra: plot twist? check. trillion well-done plot twists? check. this was done very well. i am so happy. all those plot twists and turns would usually suck in any regular anime- but this was written with GODLIKE ability. thank you, lerche. legit, this was such an enjoyable ride, i eagerly awaited each new ep! typically i hate space-related stuff but like! survival stuff gets my goat.... like this was good- (tho maybe more technical-stuff in the survival theme would make it so cooler) what shocked me the most: (spoilers alert) didn’t end up hating quitterie or funi. (tho the puppet made me want to strangle smth) luca’s gender had rly confused me but i’d decided on him being a boy- so basically that reveal left me like WHOA. i died. did luca rly have to show emo boy their tity tho... kanata losing his arm gave me the yeeeks, charce being the traitor was made sO WELL into a surprise even tho i’d kinda already suspected him<- like that was just fucking amazing writing there. gj. and ares the princess! ok man! shocked! AND also the whole clone thing, just fucked me right up. up the ass. like there are probably more plot twist layers in this than a fkn ogre has.... anyway shrek aside, yun?’s character arc was very pleasing, i think that was done very well! and the ending made me UwU like BRO? goals tbh. yeah this is a hidden gem and is just so good, so well-written overall.

cop craft: didn’t have high expectations. i am now,,, quite,,, shocked &,,, blown away. sweetheart this is a good fucking show. so why @ livechart.me DOES IT HAVE 7.40 STARS WHEN FKN ARIFURETA HAS 7.72. can someone explain this to me? i’m outraged. LIVID. matoba and tilarna were amazing characters btw! loved their dynamic! briefly i thought it might get romantic! nope, it didn’t, so it’s all good. actions scenes were epic, tilarna’s design and outfits were so much nicer than i thought they’d be like. she is so cute. and the op- man, if that is not such a bopper vibe then idk what is. i could watch it forever. it deserves so much more than what it’s got rn.

naka no hito genome: (serious question: is this considered some sort of isekai?) genome gave me btooom vibes honestly but like- this is SO much better than btooom and most game/trap/ kinda shows. fkn BOP of an op, especially the sequence at the end with short clips of each character in action (nutt). paka-san was a good boy and he deserves irl merch. i fell in LOve with all the characters (bubble boy= hot, akatsuki= ok meh actually kinda boring, karin= hot and i want her to punch me, ruromori= beautiful 12/10 would let her stalk me, sleepy eyes boy= baby + dazai vibes and hot af, twin boy= also hot, onigasaki= hot and love him so much, and loli girl= her light grenades got annoying but nice char design) anyways yeah more of this would be epic. i wanna see sakura and her twin reunite, and how they get out basically! also animation quality was very good which is surprising considering it’s a silver link anime.

kono yo no hate de koi wo utau shoujo yu-no: i include the whole title bc this is a good anime. (also livechart.me why 7.27 stars i will fuck you up) only meh part of this is the return to earth from dela granto bc that was like a culture shock and honestly at that point i’d forgotten a lot about what had happened on earth and didn’t care as much. btw, f ayumi and f the other brown-haired oneesan. mio and kanna ftw. obvs i didn’t understand the sayless x takuya thing like dumbass horny teenager . why u gotta creampie the worst girl. u have mio. bruh. (tho mio x ‘oyabi!’ boy is a great ship) also, takuya’s mom? keiko-san? idk if you’ve noticed but that’s literally my name so yeah just glad to finally have some keiko representation. altogether goodass anime. the time travel/ rezero esque reset thing almost got me but this was done well. so no problems. both ops very good. first song was bae, second also bae (just realized it’s by konomi suzuki, one of my waifu idols, so yea nice) and ed2 also so pretty! also yu-no’s design was rly pretty, the outfit colours, and her pigtails rly suited her :)

granbelm: sorry this is the last one lol this was a long ass post! other than the fact i dont rly like mecha this was good.... action, CHARACTER designs aesthetic asf, honestly rly pretty ok. i liked the cast, very diverse and more depth than most shows of this ilk. op was nicely choreographed- especially the part where the girls’ faces are contorted by their gems, showing their magical girl side. nicely done. mangetsu didn’t end up being that bad a char, and honestly? suigetsu is best girl and deserved better. and the ending too- like, bro, that made me kinda sad. some off points: anna’s mom was a little unrealistic as a mom like woman- please learn to control your child, and, white-haired girl’s sister should have played a bigger part, based on how her parts in the opening were emphasized! (quick note- blue girl, love her, great bad guy, when she dumped anna made me so happy honestly, she is beautiful, and i couldn’t actually decide who i wanted to win between her and suigetsu....)

also i have read approx 2 headcanons and baRELY understand this AU so if there are similarities to anyone else or inconsistencies iT IS AN ACCIDENT AND IM SORRY

anyway this is just about the 4 confirmed paladins BET ill be doing more about Fa’rah/Takashi/Zahi/Ashanti once i know a bit more about their roles in the team!!

Alvaro Garcia Valladares

he has a twin. i don't make the rules, but he has a twin.

he has a big family. the biggest family. we’re talking, his mom has 8 siblings and his dad has 9 and there’s a 10 year age gap between him and his oldest sibling and he loves them all so much

natia is his best friend. i repeat, NATIA IS HIS BEST FRIEND!!!!

he’s also quite close with kiki. Natia and Kiki are the only two that he met before their great space adventure

he wasn't really sure of his sexuality at first. (i say this because i wasn't sure of my sexuality at first - im bi btw - and all the media i saw told me that any lgbt+ character was 100% sure of their sexuality form the day they were born, which made me doubt myself bc i didn't figure it out till recently, so i wanna see that in some media!! sometime!!) he probably figured it out halfway through having a crush on someone

the someone is akio, and he definitely tells Natia about it first

“natia... natia listen.... I have a crush on akio. freakin akio.... what do i do??? I’m bi, natia... I'm bi. what does this mean -”

“alvaro, I'm so proud of you, but this is a public bathroom and akio is right outside -”

GUARANTEE that the first time he saw Akio he just basically wanted to fight him but also flirt with him and had a slight moral crisis and ended up doing nothing

he is a goddamn sharpshooter, okay. he straight up becomes famous for it throughout the galaxy.

yet despite that he’s still insecure, and those insecurities prevent him from really getting together w akio until much later

he comes off as very suave and extroverted when you first meet him, but underneath it all, he’s actually really warm, personable and funny: not that anyone outside the team know that

aliens on social media, probably: god, the blue paladin is so cool... i bet he’s amazing and awesome and eloquent...

meanwhile, alvaro: do u guys think i could fit my whole hand in my mouth or nah?

enjoys memes, and shares this love with kiki

basically an all around great guy. because he often felt like a seventh wheel at the beginning of the formation of the team, he always tries to include everybody as best as possible, going way out of his way to ask after people, even if they forget to ask about him sometimes :’)

Natia Nanai

first off: what a gorgeous name. seriously. incredible kudos, my dude. anyway on to the head canons for this gorgeous girl

probably alvaro’s soulmate. already mentioned this, but it needs reiteration. they are best friends

had a large family too (not as big as alvaros tho) and probably major relate to him with that big family dealio

v close with kiki. they complete each other on a technological level.

natia is very, very creative. she and her sweet engineering know how are always instrumental in getting the Team out of tough situations

she does say “bet” a lot. like, almost too much? but she's always right and valid when she says it

very soft but also badass as hell. she has a unique duality.

pulls a violet baudelaire: she puts that GORGEOUS hair up in a ponytail when doing work or whenever she has an idea

everyone on the team, regardless of sexuality, is low-key in love with her because she’s just so nice. no one can hate her. she's way too solid of a friend

speakinG of being a great friend: natia is 100% the secret keeper up in this bitch. everyone comes to her because they know she’s got the best advice around and will take their secrets to the grave

akio: idk man... alvaro is just rlly cute, u know?? but i can't tell him...

natia, thinking of alvaro literally whining to her about akio not even five minutes ago: christ

the mom friend. she always has all the things everyone needs on hand or in her lion, and she’s got it all going in terms of chore charts and family meals. she is the queen of figuring out times for team bonding and everyone loves her more for it

definitely started a board game night asap

she has a silent bravery about her that no one else can match. despite her trepidation, natia will always do what has to be done for the greater good.

she is guided by her heart and her morals, and is easily the kindest person on the team

bc of this kindness, she is often the diplomat when conflicts arise between people on the team

she is seen by the general public (aka the galaxy) as a strong, morally righteous woman. kind of like rosie the riveter-esque??? she’s the symbol of justice and fairness.

basically, a queen who always considers everyone and works really hard to create a family, even when they're all so far from home :’)

generally over it tbh

“always tired, but always inspired” - kiki, on being asked why there were dark circles under her eyes

kind of standoffish. she’s not really about being nice, she's about getting the job done, and that can rub people the wrong way, since she is always the first to offer up the cold, logical solution

but underneath that, she’s just a computer science nerd who is loyal to a fault

she really is loyal. its almost dangerous sometimes, because she would put the universe in danger to save her friends, which actually comes into conflict with her typical cold, logical approach.

she has 0-1 sibling. she's every bit the single child. she cannot relate to living in a big family setting, and at first its hard for her to deal with before she warms up to everyone else on the team

she's a genius, and thus found school to be tedious. in fact, she got fairly bad grades, as she wouldn't do the work that she saw as pointless and boring

she is a meme connoisseur, and loves to quote vines, often assisted by alvaro

kiki, as they approach a giant black hole: HZZK

alvaro, catching on immediately: is... is that real???

she is a conspiracy theorist, for sure. the government is watching us all, trying to make sure we don't learn too much.... she’s sure of it, and akio is too

tbh, the first proper conversation she had with akio was about cryptids and how the government had hidden them from the public

she was friends w natia and alvaro from before, but it is akio she becomes closest with the fastest. in some ways, she feels more distant from natia/alvaro bc of how close they are with each other and bc all of them have known each other for so long while akio is someone she got to know recently: he has no preconceptions about who she used to be, and she has none about him

plus, she and akio relate on many levels: both trans, both gay, both autistic, both theorists, and both loyal to a fault. she finds a real blood brother in akio :D

very openly gay. very. she's a space lesbian, and theres no denying it

kiki, meeting some random space girl: oh

akio, downing a glass of water but acting like its vodka or smthg: god, same

the public sees her as the cold and calculating techie, the brains of the operation

basically, she's a tech goddess with a splash of genius. she's uneasy and a bit awkward, but thats just bc she’s never been in a situation like this before. after literally 1 second with her, she opens up and is such a loyal friend. :’)

he loves his parents (zahi, takashi, and ashanti) but god he will never admit it. not ever

he’s a bit awkward, and doesn’t totally understand all social cues/jokes. because of this, he stays away from memes, and is very guarded when meeting new people, especially after experiences with light bullying for not only his social ineptitude, but his upbringing.

considering that, his first meeting with alvaro was supremely awkward, and akio accidentally fought with him multiple times before they established a solid friendship

he pined after alvaro from basically day one, but had the foresight to actually know that he was pining, unlike alvaro who just floundered

he is a stabby boi. he is unrivaled in swordplay, and enjoys routine. his natural affinity for picking up new skills plus his unrivaled work ethic basically DESTROYED everyone else when it came to swords

he’s loyal af and is always the first one to take action. akio is a “do something. do anything, but do it fast before we lose a chance to do something” kind of guy

the general public sees him as the fiery one: he’s the one with the fanciest footwork in a fight, and he’s very good with battle tactics. he can come thru with that strategy at the perfect times

he's a low-key emo. for sure. he loves MCR, but strangely dislikes other similar artists like p!atd and fob.

kiki: but...brendon urie, akio....

akio, sipping tea: as a gay, i can appreciate the aesthetic. but no one can compete with MCR

kiki, exasperated: its not a competition -

basically, a slightly guarded boy with a real talent for defending the universe and his friends, but also an emo cowboy mess who is in love with alvaro and loves everyone :’)

-heck man the entire Keith VS Kuron fight. the whole thing. the wh o l e t hi ng everything about it omigosh

-is haggar finally gonna step it up and become the main antagonist she was set up to be or what

-who else cried real tears when the castle of lions died

-rip lotura 2k18. I’ve never seen a ship lose so many fans in so short an amount of time

-yea we saw Sendak like once????? conspiracy

-I like how the black lion didn’t even hesitate to let Keith in. She as like “finally!!! not that awful clone!!!” and just opened right up

-WE FINALLY GOT THE FLASHBACKS WE DESERVE IM SO HAPPY

-BABY KEITH BABY KEITH BABYKEIRHWKBSIBSUSBSISH

-will we see the other paladins as baby children ¿¿!¿

-what hurt me so mych was that in Keith’s flashbacks,,,, we see Mr. Kogane wore the clothes that Shiro wears later on prolly meanign the Keith frickin kEPT HIS DAD’S OLD CLOTHES IM HURT

-is Krolia leaving the BOM???? Im assuming Keith’s staying as a paladin, and Krolia seems very against ever leaving him ever soooooo

-finally ready for team Voltron to be the family they need again like geez louise it’s taken too long. blame kuron

-honestly, when in doubt, always blame kuron

-hey McDonald’s can I get one uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh death please cuz this season murdered me

i havent done one of these in FOREVER but i was tagged by @gayhura !! thank u bby 💖💖💖

How did you discover the show?

i always peripherally knew of it when i was a yuri on ice blog. i had one mutual who was super into it but ironically she was a klanti. so i knew kl was a thing, i knew k and l were characters, but i didn’t know which was which. i blacklisted the ship tag bc they bored me and i was thoroughly uninterested in their relationship, which due to its prevalence and popularity i assumed to be basically canon already. one day a mutual rbed this (now deleted) nsfw sk art and i was like damn....... who’s the sexy cow man.... ppl really ship dark haired pretty boy w someone other than skinny green bean boy? so i went on the voltron wiki, learned all their names, started reading some sk fanfic because i was so determined to not get into the show. i was convinced i could just look at the pretty art and read the fic and not watch the show. clearly that was Not True

Was it love at first sight or did it take you a while to get into the the show?

my situation is weird so since i was already invested in the characters themselves (or two of them at least), i was pretty into the show from the very start. season 2 definitely solidified my love, but i was so into shiro and keith’s development both individually and as friends that it didn’t take much for me to start loving the show.

definitely s2e1 (across the universe) and s2e8 (bom). both very iconic sheith episodes. i also REALLY REALLY like s4e2 (reunion)... it made me cry like a little bitch baby even though i KNEW that pidge was gonna get reunited w/ matt.

Do you have a favorite Paladin?

i really love all of them a lot. i love shiro as a character, and also what he means for representation and what he means for my thirst levels, but ultimately keith is my favorite because i relate to him a lot and feel for him very intensely. i think he’s more complicated than fandom tends to like (ppl generally hate the things they don’t understand and i think keith is a prime example of that in a fandom where fandom needs everything spoonfed to them). i don’t understand the concept of kin (disclaimer: this is not an invitation to send me asks explaining what kin is to me) but keith is the closest i will ever come to kinning a character. i love him. he’s my darling boy. my son. light of my life. my babey. i’ll defend him until my dying breath and anyone who doesn’t like that can die mad about it.

Do you have a favorite Lion? (If it’s different from your fav Paladin, why?)

i like the red lion. you gotta earn her trust. she follows the rules of No Man. i understand that. i respect it. also she flew across space to save keith AND attacked an entire alien base to save him. if that’s not the biggest mood in the world idk what is.

Do you have a favorite Villian?

regular brain: he doesn’t really count as a ‘villain’ but i luv lotor with all my heart and soul. i think he’s a really complex character and i can’t quite figure him out but i think that’s a good thing. people in real life aren’t predictable, and fictional characters shouldn’t be either.

ARUSIANS!!! the arusians!!! they are so cute!!! i also think it’s so cute that a couple of them have designs based on real ppl who worked on the show. they look like tiny little dinosaur babies. i love them.

blade of marmora... i know people LOVE to hate them (especially kolivan) but i am glad that they have a place for keith. i think they’re really really good for him. i wish they would stop dying tho.

Care to share your favorite headcanon?

this one will never be canon (dw... why) but original garrison trio keith shiro and matt is my favorite hc in the world. they took away so much from us. we could’ve had it all. is this how it feels to be slighted by an ex.

What do you think is the best part of the show?

i think it’s really accessible to a wide demographic of fans, and across a lot of ages. younger children who are fans of the show can focus on the fight scenes and cool robots and messages about hope and friendship and bravery. older fans can, among other things, focus on the relationships between characters, and then threaten to kill each other over those relationships. it’s really beautiful. circle of life.

Any hopes and wishes for future episodes / seasons?

please let my little boy (keith) come back from the war (i want to see my little boy)

Do you think you’ll stick it out until the end of the show?

yeah i’m too far gone. we’re in this for the long haul babey. i’ll be walking across the graduation stage at cornell in 2020 being like dam.... wonder if we’re gonna finally get some project kuron resolution...

OK IM BACK IM ON EPISODE 7

THOUGHTS SO FAR THO

1) FUCKING KEITH!!! KEITH AS THE BLACK PALADIN MORE LIKE ME WITH HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE BECAUSE THIS FUCKING BOY DOES! NOT! WANT! TO! LISTEN! HE IS TOO MUCH OF A LONE WOLF OH MY GOD THE EP WHERE LOTOR STALKS THEM ON THAT GAS PLANET MADE ME WANT TO CHOKE KEITH, MY FAVORITE CHARACTER

2) S H I R O ‘ S SOLO EP!!!!!! IT WAS AMAZING it reminded me a LOT of samurai jack and god i loved the little rebels he found and i love him and keith’s relationship! honestly when keith saw shiro at the end i wept

3) lance hunk and pidge got a lot of great moments, way more than i was expecting tbh! AND ALLURA OH MY GOD SHE’S THE STAR OF THIS SEASON HOLY SHIT FIRST OF ALL BABY ALLURA IN EPISODE 7 AND THEN HER BEING A BADASS AT FLYING THE BLUE LION AND QUICKLY BONDING WITH HER LION AUGHHH and then lance showing so much insecurity but acting like keith’s right hand man! and hunk showing off his fighting skills and his INTELLIGENCE wow he and pidge have been such a team this season!

4) i love lotor’s generals but i wish there was more of them... the one with the cat has my favorite powers obviously, but i love how the muscly one with the colorful ears is a hot-head like keith and the one that i think HAS to be related to keith in some way is level-headed but really wants to impress lotor...and then i think galra!ty lee is really cute lol

5) lotor is a pretty interesting villain but i think he’s the main reason (along with others i’ll list below) why i wish this season wasn’t as short as it is... i really want to see more of what the fuck he’s planning? like what is he fucking doing why is he attacking other galra what is up with him and haggar?

6) i wish this season had another ep or 2 to show the paladins minus shiro learning to adjust to the lion swap... it really only took them like an ep and a half to become complete badasses with their new lions but like, i wish we could have seen more of lance bonding with red? and keith bonding with black and allura with blue. keith’s bond with black is very interesting to me because it seems like he only really had trouble with the controls (this is excluding how much trouble he had with leadership lol) but not with bonding itself? black opened up to him really fast and then didn’t want to let shiro in. is keith really the true black paladin? because ngl i want shiro back in black (GET IT) and keith back in red
