The Time Warp at Ilex Shrine
Team Neo-Rocket’s final goal is to get to the shrine in the Ilex forest, and summon the legendary Pokémon Celebi!
Tumblr media
If you want more information on this project, check out the Johto or Memories of Kanto tags on the blog.
When you first encounter the Ilex Shine, as you travel from Azalea Town to Goldenrod City, it is being studied by Professor Leaf Orchid. Some of her Pokémon are enjoying the forest and helping her investigate. Her Venusaur, Pidgeot, and pink Azumarill are all puttering around the shrine.
Professor Orchid notes that locals have been reporting some strange occurrences by the shrine, and she has come to investigate. Could they have anything to do with Team Neo-Rocket? Still, it’s nothing for you to worry about right now. She will let you know if anything of import happens.
It isn’t until you’ve chased Team Neo-Rocket out of Mahogany Town that you will need to return to the shrine. Team Neo-Rocket swiped an important artifact from Mahogany Town: The GS Ball. A Pokéball made of gold and silver, with a center latch button made of sparkling crystal, there has been some debate as to the origins and use of the item. It has proven ill-suited for capturing Pokémon, but some legends connect it to Ilex Shrine. Associate Professor Gold confirms that those legends are likely why Team Neo-Rocket would have stolen the GS Ball, and you need to hunt them down before it’s too late!
Sure enough, you will find Dante at the Ilex Shrine. He assures you that you are too late to stop him; once he places the GS Ball in the shrine it will summon Celebi, and allow him to travel back to the past he’s been working so hard to replicate.
The legendary Pokémon Celebi does appear, and grants his wish: Dante is warped back into the past, and you are pulled along with him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You have now been transported back in time by more than 20 years! The Johto region is a very different place, and Dante is nowhere to be found. Celebi is also entirely absent. Finding Dante may be your only way home!
As you work your way through Ilex forest, a bug catcher to the south will tell you that a strange man did rush past, heading for Azalea Town.
Tumblr media
In Azalea town, Dante is arguing with some locals in the Slowpoke Well. The locals, along with Gym Leader Bugsy, are asking why Team Rocket can’t take a hint; Team Rocket’s already been run out of town by a powerful trainer, why would they try and come back? And why only send one member?
When you confront him, Dante flees the town, back toward the forest, but not before insisting that slowpoke tails were never a very lucrative venture, anyway.
Tumblr media
When you return to the forest, you run into an unexpectedly familiar face: Indigo, who, according to his account, was the only one brave enough to try and follow you. He promises to keep an eye on Ilex forest while you investigate [whatever’s next].
However, Indigo will not be your only ally. At the northern edge of Ilex Forest you will also find a young trainer from Kanto.
Tumblr media
She introduces herself as Leaf. She has recently completed the Kanto gym challenge, and has traveled to Johto to challenge herself. She is hoping to face the powerful trainer traveling Johto, battling the revived Team Rocket, but first she wants to help you defeat Dante, especially since he has threatened her and other trainers. Leaf also asks you questions about this “Team Neo-Rocket” thing that Dante was going on about, and mentions that by traveling back in time you and Dante may have created a new timeline, altering the Pokémon world, if only slightly.
With Leaf’s help you are able to trace Dante’s path through Goldenrod city, where he is attempting to take control of the broadcast tower. However, Team Rocket already has control of the tower. Two grunts are preventing Dante’s access to the tower, with one grunt insisting he can’t enter because he doesn’t have a proper ID number or any of the necessary information, where the other grunt thinks he should be let in, as he’s obviously a member of Team Rocket.
However, he abandons this argument to battle you. Once you defeat him,  the grunts no longer have any qualms about removing him from the broadcast tower premises. After all, whether he’s Team Rocket or not, what use is a guy who can’t even defeat a kid in a Pokémon battle?
Outside the station, Leaf helps you force Dante back to the shrine, where Indigo is waiting. However, Dante refuses to use the GS Ball to summon Celebi again. Instead, he wants to help fix Team Rocket’s past failures and create a future where Team Rocket controls all of Kanto and Johto, if not all of the Pokémon world. Leaf informs him that what he wants doesn’t matter, because she has taken the GS Ball from him while he was distracted by your battle. Leaf places the GS Ball on the shrine, and wishes you good luck. She’s sure you’ll meet again. Celebi returns to the shrine, and transports you through time once more.
Standing at the shrine is an old man in a dark coat. The man comments that he recognizes the red “R” on Dante’s breast pocket. It’s a mark of failure, he explains. A mark of mistakes. He asks Celebi why it would show him this, an unfamiliar man making the same mistakes he fought his whole life for. Celebi has no answer, but the man has advice for Dante:
Greed will get you nowhere. It will only leave you isolated, with no company but cold coins or the shadows of hiding. Chasing greed makes you a target for defeat by those who know better. A child, filled with enthusiasm and supported by friends, will always be greater than a man chasing power for power’s sake.
The man explains that no matter how many times he tried, greed always led him back to ruins, and to isolation. The more you follow greed and power, the more pointless it becomes. To repeat the same actions time and again and expect different results is a form of madness. You cannot recreate the past, and you cannot reach true success through greed. He has found no power more potent than the bond of genuine friendship he has managed to make with some of his Pokémon. His Persian and Nidoking leap out of their Pokéballs to confirm this point.
The old man turns to Celebi and asks if that’s the right thing to say. Is this how the Pokémon wanted him to face his past? Celebi still gives him no answer, but in a blink, you, Indigo, and Dante are transported through time once more.
Professor Orchid is waiting for you both when you return to Ilex Shrine in the present, as are Gold, Silver, and Kris.
Tumblr media
Silver takes Dante to face justice for what he’s done, and Professor Leaf Orchid confirms that your trip to the past must have been causing ripple effects in the present. This clears up much of the confusion, and will also allow for more focused study going forward!
While in the past, there are a wide variety of new Pokémon and alternate forms of familiar species that you can discover! When you return to the present, Professor Orchid will even update your Pokédex to properly document them.
Tumblr media
Now that you’ve made it back to the present, you’ll need to focus on completing your Johto League challenge! Team Neo-Rocket has been defeated for good, and there’s only one gym left before you challenge the Elite Four and Champion.
After you have been inducted into the Johto hall of fame, you can return to the Ilex Shrine to battle and capture Celebi. If you have Celebi in your team, you can travel back to the past once a day, and explore to your heart’s content! However, you will not be able to go any further than Goldenrod City or Azalea town in each direction, as people don’t believe your gym badges are genuine.

aside from my rice here’s a doodle dump of my timeskip johto kiddos all scribbled during classes! forgot to upload this some time ago but it's a mix of silly doodles, profile studies and outfit ideations 📝
#kagoodles#pokemon gsc#pokemon hgss#rival silver#trainer kris#trainer ethan#trainer lyra#tag wall incoming guys waHA#practicing with profiles is fun but keeping consistency at various angles? hoogh#alright time for more rambling abt these guys (specifically lyra and ethan) for a bit :D#I wanted lyra's champion dress to have a bit more inspo from filipiniana dresses but also retain parts from her sygna suit in pmex!#celebi inspired to honor her role as ilex's shrine protector when her grandparents pass that torch to her#not sure of a specific battle gimmick but it would involve hp recovery and defense/sp def buffing with a mix of lessening critical hits#and then she hits ya with the steel chair equivalent azumarill backed with huge power + belly drum!!!!!!!!! sweep em girl!!!!!!!!!!#silver and lyra would be the last guys you'd face for double battles at the battle tower but Watch Out#what else what else uhhh ETHAN#ethan's revolves around the pokeathlon so he's a bit more showy in competition compared to when he does photography work#he can jump between being a popular pokeathlete to intensely focused on taking wildlife pictures with like. several 'mons surrounding him#very dedicated to his research and study; his friends would find him in crazy phototaking positions just to take a pic of a heracross#i think it'd be funny that ethan and kris are rivals at the pokeathlon they would have some beef (they'd tally wins against each other)#I haven’t forgotten abt everyone else tho I have so much on the mind I wanna draw#maybe I’ll finish some of these doodles for when I feel like working on my neocities but website building is a whole beast in and of itself#but I’ll persevere if the results come out decent >:]

Just spitballing some random pokethoughts...
Eternatus and the Darkest Day happened in Galar 3,000 year ago, and at the same time AZ made the Ultimate Weapon in Kalos, again 3,000 years ago.
And the two events lead to Devon co. studying Mega Evolution to develop Infinity Energy, and Macro Cosmos studying Dynamax and Power Spots to develop Rose's power plant. "Eternal" and "Infinite."
And the Eternatus power plant logo strongly resembles the new logo in the Z-A trailer.
And in Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, the Infinity Energy was ultimately used to save the day by teleporting the Delta meteor into another universe. getting Mega Rayquaza to destroy the Delta meteor. And Eternatus fell to Earth on a meteorite (20,000 years ago).
Delta(Δ) being the mathematical variable for "Change," and obviously being a play on the Greek letter motif(ΩA). And of course Alpha and Omega as a pair are best known as the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet(and the biblical "Beginning and the End")
So, go figure, ΩA is a synonym with ZA, so the title ...Z-A can be understood as "(from)The End to The Beginning," the reverse reading of A-Z as "A to Z."
There are two kings who helped defeat Eternatus who apparently at some point shared a bloodline? (Did their descendents marry later, or were the two kings already related?) Tragically their bloodline produced the brothers Shieldbert and Swordward.
AZ was a former king of Kalos and is succeeded by a younger brother from whom Lysander is descended.
King Louis XIV was dubbed "le Roi Soleil":"the Sun King" and famously obsessed over sun motifs. His Palace of Versailles is the basis of the Parfum Palace in Kalos. The Parfum Palace was built by either AZ or one of his descendents.
The Parfum Palace garden has statues of Zekrom and Reshiram
Zekrom and Reshiram were split in two from their original united form by the Hero of Truth and the Hero of Ideals, forming Unova in the process.
The Twin Heroes built the Relic Castle in what is now the Resort Desert. The Relic Castle appears to have been built "at least 2,500 years ago".
Possibly also built the Abyssal Ruins? One castle dedicated to the sun and the desert, one to the dark and the watery depths?
The Relic Castle enshrines Volcorona, "The Sun Pokemon" said to have appeared at a time when ash blacked out the sky and saved people by acting as a replacement for the sun.
Eternatus' Darkest Day involved summoning dark clouds to black out the sky.
Alder, Champion of Unova, has a Volcorona as his signature pokemon, a backstory involving losing a pokemon and wandering the region in his grief, kind of like AZ, sans the immortality.
Alder also has a flaming mane-like hair not too dissimilar to Lysandre's.
Alder is the basis of an unspecified character design in Legends Arceus who appears to be a third, perhaps seminal or unifying factor in the Maxi/Archie ancestors' Diamond and Pearl clans. A Platinum clan? The Sinnoh people? Or just a unifier, a peace maker, a mentor, or a shared ancestor?
Cogita and Volo as members of the Sinnoh people have fixations on lore keeping/seeking. Something Cynthia sort of inherits
Cynthia is from Celestic Town in Sinnoh, where Drasna said she's from originally
Zinnia is a Dragon trainer and "lorekeeper" in ORAS
Celestic Town in DPPt has a shrine that uses the same model as the one in Ilex Forest for Celebi in HGSS
Terapagos is supposed to have an ability to alter or shift timelines, relating to the presence of the Paradox Pokemon
But Black City and White Forest also seem to exist as a kind of paradox around polar opposite futurism and primitivism

Oh, shoot, I forgot to write the February post.
Well… it’s February!! We’ve got a few holidays coming up, including Valentine’s Day (which I promise I will get around to putting the romance books for out soon), and today, Watchog Day!
Now, I don’t know about you all, but when I think Watchog Day, my first thought is time-loop fiction. So today’s recommendation is Ilex, a book about a Johtonian shrine maiden who keeps reliving the same three days, in the hope of saving her small village from certain destruction in a mysterious attack by Entei—and her own life. It’s an intriguing suspense with a focus on historical Shinto practice in Johto!

Research into those statues I’ve been finding is slow. Mostly because making sure Major(Tauros) is comfortable and taken care of while he heals is my biggest priority right now, but at the very least I have been able to locate that old picture book of the Old Gods of Johto. It’s just a thing for kids, but it’s real history and part of our heritage that usually gets brushed off because Ho-oh, Lugia and Celebi have been much more present much more recently
The gist of it is that, every species of Pokémon has their own deity that represents certain aspects of the world. Yes I do mean one for every Pokémon, so there are literally hundreds of them. Some with some pretty hyper specific domains, and several of which blend together sometimes. While all of these guys are powerful in their way, Ho-oh and Lugia still reign supreme over all of them as Lord and Lady (though the genderedness of those titles is a matter of hot debate these days) and Celebi is pretty much a free agent that does what they like
Of those hundreds of sub deities, twelve (or thirteen depending on who you ask) are the most important of all, and were given special honors by mankind. Shrines, holidays, their own hymns, the whole package. Over time, every single one of these gods just sort of faded away into obscurity. Some due to time, some due to shifting values, but most gods and their shrines were lost and destroyed due to constant war with our neighbors in Kanto. Nowadays, they’re only remembered as children’s fairy tales.
But the staues I’ve been seeing are more than that. And I’ve found more information on those three.
Tumblr media
The Arcanine was the first I saw, and was actually being dug up by an archaeology team near the Ruins of Alph. This picture is from my book and I’ll put the passage about it here too:
“Of the old gods of Johto, Arcanine was loved and respected to level that almost rivaled Ho-oh and Lugia. The Arcanine god was very fond of humanity, adoring their works of art, their creative foods, their beautiful music and resilient hearts. Every chance they got, the Arcanine deity, and their child Growlithe would give aid to the growing people of Johto. The love of these gods was so great, that all mortal Growlithe and Arcanine share that same love for humans naturally, even to this day. It is still unknown why these powerful and majestic gods have not been seen in so long, but surely parting from the humans they so loved was deeply painful for Arcanine.”
It’s a bit of a sad story, but seeing the love I get every day from both of my own Growlithe does make me believe that something in the heavens loves us too. Why else would we get to be with these amazing creatures we call Pokémon?
The second statue was in the Ilex Forest all alone. Somehow though, it was perfectly clean, and I can only guess as to why. The god it belongs to is much more unassuming at first.
Tumblr media
“Rattata may seem like an odd choice for a high pantheon of gods, but the ancient Johtoans held the humble creature on a surprisingly high pedestal. Small and humble they are, but they are mighty in their way. Just as Johto is in times of hardship and war. Unlike their neighbors, Johto has few natural deposits of iron, at least ones that are not habitats for territorial, burrowing Steel types. Therefore, many weapons of ancient Johto were forged with Rattata teeth to bolster the strength of what little iron they had. This served two purposes: genuinely strengthening forged blades as a primitive form of steel, and to channel the spirits of the persistent and underestimated power of the humble and the common. For this reason, the Rattata god is often portrayed wielding a sword many times its size.”
Maybe because they were more popular during times of war, Rattata’s shrines were targeted much more fiercely. It does explain why traditional smiths here sometimes keep Rattata teeth somewhere on display.
Now the third statue… if you know me even a little bit, you’ll understand why this one is important.
Tumblr media
“When one imagines strength, it is difficult not to picture a Tauros. They are famed for it with good reason. Likewise, the Tauros god is one that is turned to when great strength is needed for some task or feat. Unrestrained, determined, and a champion among the Gods of Johto, Tauros represents the celebration of strength and survival. In the dead of winter, they send their blessings to those struggling to make it through the season, promising that if they are steadfast, they will live to see the next spring. Strangely, every depiction of this deity is different from both Kanto and Paldean varieties of Tauros, with longer horns and tails, brighter forehead studs and thicker manes. Some theorize that these depictions are all that drama in of a now extinct breed of Tauros.”
Well we were definitely struggling in the blinding snow trying to get home for the holidays, and Major responded to something about the statue of this god in a hidden cave that inspired him to lead us there to safety. That can’t just be a coincidence. I’m going to try to learn more when I can.

“ first true friend ” .
why not chloe? shouldn’t it be horace? why, out of the people goh met, was ash considered his first friend?
ok, ok, let’s bring it back to jn001. let’s have a little talk, yeah.
goh and chloe attended professor oak’s pokémon camp together when they were six years old, and seemed to be childhood friends. goh was interested in research and learning about pokémon, chloe’s dad ─ professor cerise’s ─ job.
chloe decided to deal with goh, knowing he was just some lonely kid who had a hard time talking to anybody else. they didn’t exactly become friends, more like acquaintances, they were friendly to each other because they could be.
during jn001, we get to see goh’s personality for the first time; overconfident, shy, gets riled up and reckless easily. being alone for what was basically his entire childhood up to that point, he didn’t understand how people felt. about him. about anything, really. chloe seemed to be more of his guide into the world, even if she got annoyed with the way he acted easily.
goh keeps talking about all the pokémon they see at the camp, even correcting professor oak on his statement that every pokémon evolves. even if the other kids were impressed, chloe wasn’t. she knew goh just acted like this, and felt he may have been rude to professor oak for saying everything he knew.
both chloe and goh seeing mew was the climax of the episode, and though focused on mew, we learned a lot about them. goh didn’t want any friends, even if chloe said the reason he had none was because of how he acted. they didn’t know each other, they didn’t really know how they acted.
seeing mew together made them know about each other a bit more, it strengthened their bond the littlest bit. they weren’t exactly ‘friends’ because they didn’t want to be. they hung out, but kept most of their lives from each other because they didn’t need to be close. they didn’t seem to want to.
goh didn’t seem to want chloe ( or anybody ) to really be considered his friend, chloe didn’t seem to wanna keep dealing with goh. they were friendly. but not ‘true friends’. not until after ash.
now, let’s skip forward a bit. 31 episodes, but just about a year in goh’s timeline. in jn032, we learn about goh’s previous vacation to johto, where he met tokio in ilex forest. i’ve said his dub name enough times in this post.
the two were instantly friendly with each other, unlike how goh acted around chloe. tokio talked about his interest in meeting celebi, and goh impressed him with talking about how he got to see mew. they both have an interest in research, as well as mythical pokémon, and got along easily.
tokio is calmer and kinder, bringing out those traits in goh as well. even if goh seemed to talk a lot at the pokémon camp, he showed a different, more natural side of himself to tokio. they’re very similar, more similar than goh and chloe were, and thus, became friends easier. yeah, friends.
the two were friendly because of how similar they were, which made their bond strong even during their first time meeting. they both went searching for the ilex forest shrine during the episode, and had fun during it. they made new friends that day in each other, and promised to meet up again the next day when they realized they should leave the forest due to the dark.
but then they didn’t meet up the next day. tokio ended up with a fever, something he couldn’t tell goh about, which made goh think tokio just . . didn’t want to come back the next day. didn’t want to talk to him.
it wasn’t the first time we saw goh’s trust issues, and not the first time he declared someone as ‘not his friend’ because of it either. but it was the first time we saw it in goh’s timeline, the first time he felt betrayed. the next time he reconsidered a friendship with somebody was in jn003, he still didn’t know who to trust.
goh and tokio didn’t re-connect and talk about the misunderstanding until three years later, the entire three years making goh believe that tokio wasn’t his true friend. he didn’t want to consider tokio a ‘true friend’, not until after he met ash.
jn002 and jn003 were the first times ash and goh interacted. in the 2nd episode, they didn’t really have a ‘friendship moment’ yet, well, other than their ride across the city on lugia’s back. they already seemed so in sync with each other, as if they had the exact same feelings during the lugia ride.
goh accepted ash as his friend, something he’d tried to do multiple times before and only did once. at the moment, he just felt like ash wouldn’t betray him. he knew fate pulled them together, and he decided to trust fate this time.
delia told goh to look after ash for her, and goh knew he could. he didn’t know exactly what he was feeling, but he knew this was a new beginning, his relationship with ash would be something he hadn’t felt before.
jn003 really felt like goh and ash’s first episode together, though. ash and goh recieved their first missions as research fellows, and decided to investigate it. goh learned a lot about ash, how he cares about how a pokémon feels, and will trust anyone or anything the minute he knows he can.
goh was already re-thinking his friendship, realizing how different they really were. he knew how that made chloe feel almost annoyed with him, and already expected the worst.
but goh didn’t know how ash was like, he seemed to barely even know how he himself was like. he didn’t know ash until he watched him protect the ivysaur, and he had the moment of realization. oh shit, this guy. he’s the one, the one who’ll stay by my side.
he realized ash trusted the ivysaur just like he trusted goh. they were instant friends because they trusted each other instantly. he decided to keep trusting ash, one of the best decisions he made. because they became true friends, they helped each other grow.
ash helped goh understand how to make friends, it’s what helped him be better friends with chloe, and understand her. it’s what helped him gain a new ─ and old ─ friend when he reunited with horace.
they’re called ‘firstfriendshipping’ because goh initially needed ash’s help to turn his sorta-friendships into true friendships. and now that they’re apart, goh will always remember how ash helped him on his journey.
they were true friends. and ash happened to be goh’s first.
