Rising to 312 metres above sea level, the hill was a natural place from which to send long-distance signals, and was used for this purpose long before the tower was built.⁣ ⁣ For centuries, big fires in high places conveyed news of invasion threats or great victories right across the country. If the news was good, the beacon also served as a bonfire around which local people could make merry.⁣ ⁣ Broadway Tower was erected and built as a folly in 1800 for the wealthy landowner George William, the 6th Earl of Coventry. It then unexpectedly became a workplace when it was acquired by Sir Thomas Phillipps, who may have been the greatest collector of manuscripts and printed books in history.⁣ ⁣ During the Victorian Age, Broadway Tower housed a printing press and later served as a refuge for romantic-minded poets and scholars. But by the early 20th century it had been converted to a surprisingly humdrum role as a farmhouse. And, like many estates, it became expensive and difficult to maintain, and came to be seen as a rather mixed blessing.⁣ ⁣ Broadway Tower & Park is now a family-owned property open to the public offering sweeping views of the surrounding countryside.⁣ ⁣ 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲:⁣ ⁣ Take a train to Cheltenham and catch the 606 bus to Broadway.
