Absolutely LOVING my current read, The Betrayal of Richard III by VB Lamb, because it reminds me so much of tumblr stanning. Not only can Darling Richard have done nothing wrong (those nephews were just resting in his Tower) but he could never have foreseen something like Stanley switching sides because he himself - a perfect cinnamon-king if ever there was one - was so damn loyal and he couldn't IMAGINE betraying anyone EVER.
And like historiographically the author is up against a certain level of "Bad Richard. BAAAAD." but I do like to imagine them keeping a little shrine in their home, with a picture of Lovely Rick and maybe a candle and a single rose - white, of course, not red HOW FUCKING DARE YOU EVEN SUGGEST THAT YOU SHITWEASEL LANCASTRIAN TROLL - and in our modern times perhaps coming to tumblr to share the love. I ADORE THIS PERSON. SO MUCH.
The author HATES Henry VII, that cruel, conniving, callous, cunty, shitlord. And fair enough he has never struck me as either nice or interesting (be at least one of those PLS!!) but I feel like he'd be a dreadful person in this book anyway no matter what. WHICH I LOVE.
The only important place where we differ is that I, cursed to live in this shithole century, know for a fact that Dearest Richard had scoliosis and so the one-shoulder-higher-than-the-other wasn't just an attempt to make him seem more evil because he was "deformed," so this author is doing their best to dispute that (and again in fairness there don't seem to be any definitely-contemporary mentions of it that survive to our time) while I know that we stan a true disabled ICON.
12/10 would recommend A++ best EVAR.

I need to start new period dramas. Can you list your favs like which you recommend most? (Ive seen Reign) Thanks!
Sure!
Spartacus--set in Ancient Rome, obvious during the Third Servile War.  This is actually one of my top... five?  three? favorite shows of all time.  It deserves INTENSE trigger warnings for basically everything--gore, sexual violence, torture.  I will say that a lot of the general gladiatorial violence is purposefully over the top--originally because the show couldn’t afford realistic effects and they were like “fuck it, let’s go OTT and embrace it” and later because it basically was the Aesthetic.  Lots of slo mo and AAAARGGGGGHHHHs!!!!  Also a surprising amount of sensitivity towards the trauma the characters endure.  Like.  This is one of the only shows that I feel deals with trauma correctly for the majority of the characters.  They never really... “heal” in that unrealistic soft way.  But they do live.  It’s also surprisingly diverse, and the female characters are EXCELLENT, both the heroines and the villains.  The villains are so well-done too.  Well-developed without being portrayed as justified or excused.
Rome--set during the rules of the First and Second Triumvirates.  Definitely a “must watch” period piece.  It really set the tone for many that have followed, and few have matched or surpassed it.  It’s great drama, has one of the best female villains on TV of all time. I do really, really dislike its version of Cleopatra.  As a whole.  But I loooove its portrayal of Octavian and Antony, so--what’re you gonna do?
Vikings (season 1-2............................................ maybe season 3 in some spots though that’s still gotta fuck ton of issues)--set in early medieval Scandinavia.  Not a good show now, but I really loved it for the first couple of seasons and I think that those seasons, especially the first two, are still worth watching. Really, the ending of season 2 is quite final in a lot of ways.  So you could watch it like that?  Vikings was an extremely odd and trippy show in the first couple of seasons as well, which I enjoy seeing blended with its period piece setting.  It also has some really cool fight scenes and music.
Medici: The Magnificent--set in early-to-high Renaissance Florence.  Okay, so technically this is season 2 of Medici (the first season is called Medici: Masters of Florence) but season 1 frankly... sucks.  And season 2 has only one or two hold-over actors, and it’s set a couple of decades after season 1 ends.  It is, for all intents and purposes, a whole new show.  I love it.  This is a soapy show, and not every actor is greeeeat but Daniel Sharman is FANTASTIC in it, and so are the villains.  I really can’t emphasize how much I love Daniel Sharman in this role--and not just because he’s hot.  It’s also lovely to look at for the most part.  I really love the men’s costumes on this show too?  And the Pazzi Conspiracy is pretty well done.
The Borgias--set in High Renaissance Rome.  Oh, this show.  I loved it SO HARD once.  And I don’t anymore.  It’s very flawed.  But it’s fucking BEAUTIFUL in some scenes, and while it’s not the way I want the story of the Borgia family to be told, it does have some great moments, and some great performances for that matter.  (They should have let Francois Arnaud go Full Evil with Cesare, but whatever.)  It’s soapy.  There is an actual canonical incest pairing, and it’s played as totally romantic.  So heads up on that.  But this show did shape a part of me, so I can’t totally complain.
The Tudors--set in Renaissance/Reformation/post-Reformation England.  This show is so bad in some parts?  I still refuse to say that Jonathan Rhys Myers is putting on a good performance as Henry VIII. Because I don’t think it’s good acting.  But it’s like.  Entertaining.  There’s a scene where he’s like, trying to pole vault over a pond or something and he’s like “watch me lads this’ll be rad” and he just... ends up in the pond.  I think he gets sick and ends up screaming.  He does a lot of screaming.  But the women are very good in this!!!  Maria Doyle Kennedy and Natalie Dormer kill it in the first two seasons, and Tamzin Merchant is so good at playing up more than just the sexy lil thing role that this show wanted to give Katherine Howard.  She put a lot into fleshing her out.  I would say that the first two seasons are like, fun soapy shenanigans with a few genuinely good beats, and the last two are kinda dull except for when they relate to the downfall of Thomas Cromwell (who is very well played in this show) and Katherine Howard.
The White Queen/The White Princess--set during medieval England.  Do I recommend?  No.  No I do not.  Is it kind of incredibadly watchable at times?  Yes.  These loosely related minseries monstrosities are like, horrible feminism, horrible costuming, and occasionally really fucking good performances.  It’s about the Wars of the Roses (TWQ) and the early reign of Fuckboi In Leather Pants and A Pirate Shirt Henry VII.  Also, Richard III is a goth in this series.  There will be another installment, The Spanish Princess, once again with a whole new cast, very soon.  It will be about Catherine of Aragon.  Supposedly.
Versailles--set in 18th century France.  This does for Louis XIV what The Tudors did for Henry VIII.  But it’s marginally better because George Blagden is a better actor than JRM, and Louis XIV actually seems like he has a brain sometimes, and is generally an evil plotting cocker spaniel with his gay brother.  A typical episode of Versailles is basically Louis XIV having Somewhat Awkward Sexual Tension with said brother as they snipe at each other, until they agree to be friends and rule the French court through psychological manipulation.  Louis gives somewhat an absolutely withering glance.  They commit suicide before him.  Everyone is wearing a mask.  I mean, I have fun with it.  Though there is a VERY CRINGE STORYLINE in the beginning that is based on a VERY CRINGE LEGEND that always makes me hesitate to recommend it.
Alias Grace--set in 19th century Canada.  Essentially, this is a thriller and a period piece.  A doctor learns through a series of interviews about the heinous murders that Grace committed while a servant in a rich man’s house.  I really like this show’s exploration of class divides and women’s relationships with each other.  It’s preeeetty dark.
North and South--set in industrial England.  I always describe this as like...  Pride and Prejudice if Darcy had a more sexual vibe and was more working class, and if Elizabeth was tbh.............................. a bit dumber, if well-intentioned.  I love it.  The smoldering gazes.  The secretive glances.  The classic “woman rejects man’s marriage proposal, man is a broken husk” scene.  It’s great.
The Crown--set in twentieth century England-present.  This is one of the GREATEST DRAMAS EVER, frankly.  Like.  This show takes objectively petty arguments and turns them into something super epic and intense.  It’s all about the strength of the acting and the writing.  There is only one episode in the two (so far) seasons that disappointed me.  Plus, this show looks intensely expensive.
Peaky Blinders--set in Post WWI Birmingham.  First two seasons ONLY.  But oh, they were great seasons of TV.  This show is about a crime family, and I absolutely love crime family dramas.  It also features Grace Burgess, one of my favorite characters ever.  She is a lady cop who sets out to seduce the main character, head of aforementioned crime family.  For The Law.  That is all.
Hopefully, this is a good starting point--ngl, most period pieces drop in quality after a couple seasons, so it’s hard to give a wholehearted recommendation.

act i. NOBILITY BORN IN AN ANGRY BIRTH / it’s hard to believe there was once a time when Adam Becher was held in high regard, one of the first borns of the Alia Terran generation, one passersby on the street would be excited to see as he was held in his mother’s arms—it’s too bad the same couldn’t be said for rest of his life. Too quickly, Adam became someone to fear. Too quickly, his mother was ripped from him and a rather mischievous boy turned mean. Or did he? Did he turn, or instead emerge? The angry, violent birth that brought him into this world seemed to be a sign of the man to come, the harbinger of a terror that roamed the Alia Terran streets from the day he could walk. Was it just his mother’s death that propelled him into the childhood monster? Was it the shield of his father’s power that allowed him to be a force of anger for eighteen years?
His father’s power, the little boy of the big man running the show, protected him when it should have protected others. The little boy who pulled on pigtails and stole fruit off of stands in the market kept in his own power for far too long by the town’s fear of his daddy’s wrath. (A strict man, Commander Abraham Yates is.) It’s a cliche that angry boys act out to get their neglectful father’s attention and it’s entirely applicable to the young Adam Yates, only stealing and hitting and fighting to get his father to care; negative attention is still attention, after all. It’s only prolonged, intensified, by his mother’s passing–eleven years old really is way too young to lose your mother–and his father’s neglect prolongs and intensifies as well. As the acting out gets more extreme, the neglect does too. It’s not Abraham’s fault, really, he lost his wife as well and isn’t there that saying about heavy heads and crowns?
If it’s not Abraham’s fault, then is it really the fault of Adam? (Yes, it is.)
act ii. ALL IT TAKES IS ONE PUNCH TOO FAR / and one kick too hard, and your life is ruined. Becks, he’s been called for years now since he’s taken his mother’s maiden name (scrubbing his father from all his ownership yet still hiding behind the fear of being the Commander’s Son), and the name becomes synonymous with bully. Fights, drinking, illegally smoking, fucking, sneaking OTG and throwing parties at Outpost 1, he does it all. Becks, the new name he’s been called since he was thirteen, masks his connection to his father for the newcomers and the surprise when they find out his parentage would almost be funny if it didn’t sting so much. (Why does it sting? Because as much as he hates his daddy, he loves him, too–more than anyone.)
One punch, one kick, one fight. What makes the fight in the market with Shiloh Blake at 12:03 PM on June 15th, 2111 so special? It’s the first time he’s ever killed. Fights, while vicious, usually get broken up before anyone could get hurt, you’ve got the loyal and royal Guards to thank for that, but his rage had been too strong, too dangerous that day. It wasn’t like he was entirely blameless, Shiloh insulted his mother (“You know, maybe if your whore of a mother didn't die getting the fever from sucking off every guy in this town and didn't leave you to be raised by that fucking evil asshole who is running this god damn colony into the ground, you'd actually be a decent guy instead of an evil piece of shit who everyone hates,” were the actual words said, but no one really cares when a kid ends up DEAD) and then his father too and then suddenly red. Just red.
Shiloh Blake didn’t actually die on that day, June 15th. It took a few more days for the aneurysm to finally get him but he might as well have died the second the first punch landed. Everyone forgets Becks died on that day, too. Daddy can’t protect you when you’ve beat someone so violently that their entire face breaks. For the first time in a very long, long time, Adam Becher feels scared as he hears the calls for his execution, the calls for vengeance and justice for a life taken too soon. He feels hopeful, for the first time in a very long time, that his father really does love him and won’t let him be fed to the beasts. (He deserves to be their meat, but it doesn’t make it any less terrifying.)
“You are hereby banished from Alia Terra,” Commander Yates, Daddy, says, and Becks is finally sure his father never really loved him at all.
act iii. REVENGE IS A MAN / and he’s coming for everyone who has ever hurt him. (Do the people he has hurt not want the same thing?) Really, he should have seen it as a courtesy that his father graciously allowed him to only be exiled (so many others were executed for much more minor offenses) but it only burns his stomach more; death is easier than living in the jungle. Alia Terra is a Heaven and the jungle is Hell but he learns to love the fear of living within it. It’s a better fit, actually. Outpost 7 quickly becomes his new home and he’s never felt happier to shed the skin of the colony. Maybe pardoned isn’t the word but welcomed is, the Outsiders don’t look at him with fear or contempt — they’re just as guilty as he is, after all, it is Hell. It feels good to finally belong.
Revenge, anger, the only thoughts that seem to echo inside his head. Adam Becher hates Alia Terra, more than he ever did when he actually lived there, and dreams of the day it gets blown to pieces. This anger, this hunger for pain and revenge, plainly shows on his face; once a rather fresh faced cub, has the claw marks of a lion (or a Allosaur, rather) displayed on the left side of his face. There are other scars, too, so many decorate his body as the badges of honor that comes with being an Outsider. These scars are as hateful as he is, but guilt and regret coats his lungs, and it makes for a very dangerous combination.
Well, it’s really only a matter of time before the powder keg explodes.

awwww!!!!!!!!!!! thats okay, love!!!! and yeah, feel free to do this anytime, even if it’s not about books!!!! ily!!!
Blue Sargent
Why I like them: she’s a badass female character that doesn’t take any boy’s bullshit. also, she works really hard to achieve her dreams and she’s really resilient. also her fashion sense? amazing. i aspire to be her, tbh. also she’s short like me lol
Why I don’t: okay, it’s not even something i don’t like about her, because i sorta do? but it’s kinda off-putting how cliché her character is? like she’s the only one in her family that isn’t a psychic, but she’s a ~mirror~. i love cliché things tho….. so it’s conflicting?
·         Favorite line: “I just want to pretend. I want to pretend I could.” / “It should be so.” / Every fight she had with Adam, tbh.
·         OTP: bluesy, duh.
·         Brotp: ronan/blue….idk what the ship name is but their friendship is the reason i breathe tbh.
·         Head Canon: idk…. i like her canon enough lmao like i don’t think i have any?
·         Unpopular opinion: probably the thing i wrote above lmao
·         A wish: that she lives a long, happy life and goes to costa rica and fulfills all of her dreams
·         An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: she changes anything about her ever
·         5 words to best describe them: feminist, aesthetic, hardworking, funny, badass
·         My nickname for them: i don’t have one
Richard “Dick” Campbell Gansey III
·         Why I like them: he is the greatest friend ever? he cares so much about his friends and he’s just so…. so good to them. he’s also so smart and so driven to do the things he wants to do and i admire him so much for that. also he can be That Bitch when he needs to be and i live for it. all his fucking quirks it’s beautiful.  i relate to his anxious ass lmao his fashion sense kills me too.
·         Why I don’t: the! motherfucking! will-he-die-shit! i haven’t finished the raven king and i’m lowkey pulling my hair out every time i read a scene with him in it.
·         Favorite line: “I believe I’m having a panic attack.” / “I like you an awful lot, Blue Sargent.” / The whole duck scene / “Crushed and broken. Just the way women like ‘em.” / “Safe as life.”
·         OTP: bluesey
·         Brotp: god……………………………………. the trio, tbh. i live for their friendship. don’t make me choose between them.
·         Head Canon: i have this very specific head canon for how his voice sounds but idk how to describe it
·         Unpopular opinion: idk?
·         A wish: that he lives happily,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, please………………
·         An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: having him die,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
·         5 words to best describe them: driven, anxious, king, leader, fighter
·         My nickname for them: none?
Ronan Lynch
·         Why I like them: where do i start………………………………. god. first of all how much he loves his family and his friends. like he would literally die for them and holy fuck he’s so fucking sweet. like he masks it with this harsh exterior but like??? he gave adam lotion, he paid his rent. he goes to church every sunday to see his brother. he wrote “remembered” on noah’s car over “murdered” i cried tbh. he didn’t kill kavinsky the first time he saw him?  he dreamt up a fucking baby raven, named it chainsaw, and raised that thing. fucking angel. but he’s also a huge asshole? also how fucking Dramatic he is, because same. i just…… really relate to this asshole so much.
·         Why I don’t: okay…… so when he dreamt that night and almost died….. he let gansey and everyone let him thing that he killed himself…….. and then liked joked about it………. like i get his reasoning and like i totally understand it all, but as someone whose struggled with suicide and shit…. it just wasn’t cool to read that.
·         Favorite line: everything he says is perfect tbh but…. “You’re already dead!” / “Thanks Parrish, I like your face, too.” / “It makes you look like a loser.” / “There was never a you and me.” / “Jesus Mary Fuck!” / “You’re just jealous because you didn’t find one, too.” / “I’m being perfectly fucking civil.” / “Don’t fucking swear.” / “Maybe I dreamt you.” / “Gansey’s partying with his mother. And Noah’s fucking dead. But Parrish is here.”
·         OTP: pynch…………..rovinsky (kill me tbh but like….. i ship it)
·         Brotp: gansey/ronan, and blue/ronan, i live for their friendships tbh also!!! noah/ronan, i think that’s my fave
·         Head Canon: i have this head canon (that’s basically canon) but if any of his friends, even if they’re not adam, need something, he’ll dream it for them and hide it somewhere they’ll find it. also this is also canon but when he moves to the barns he dreams a shit ton of animals and will text pictures of them to adam gansey and blue all the time and that he makes his animals a meme and everyone loves it. also trans ronan is my fucking shit
·         Unpopular opinion: tbh…. idk
·         A wish: he lives a long, happy life as a farmer with his beautiful husband and adoptive daughter i’m waiting for the dreamer trilogy to kill me
·         An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: pls….. don’t hurt my son or his friends……… keep everyone safe.
·         5 words to best describe them: asshole, dramatic, caring, strong, honest
·         My nickname for them: nothing, yo
Adam Parrish
·         Why I like them: where the fuck do i even………. ok so like adam is so fucking strong, okay? he stayed at an abusive household, didn’t accept charity, and stuck to his principles. that shit is so fucking hard. and when it came down to it, he stuck up for himself, and got his father in trouble, and accepted his friends help, which in some ways is harder. and he’s so driven, working multiple jobs to pay for food and school and rent, going to a private school school and getting A’s because he knows that he has to work hard to achieve what he wants. and he’s intuitive. he knows that ronans crushing on him, he figured out that gansey was destined to die, and he’s just….. so smart. And he’s!!!! bisexual. love that representation.
·         Why I don’t: okay…. so like, i understand sticking to your principles, but……. there’s a time where it’s totally acceptable to not. and when you’re fucking able to leave an abusive household, that’s a pretty good fucking reason. Granted, he did eventually, but he could’ve don’t it a lot sooner. he’s just a little shortsighted, i guess? Ironic, lmao. also, his callouts (like with blue, when telling ronan he knew he paid the rent, etc.) is appreciated, because he isn’t taking bullshit, he could… handle them better.
·         Favorite line: “That’s this biggest lie you’ve ever told.” (GET REKT) /  all his exchanges with ronan tbh / “I’d like to press charges.” / “Nobody knows what [enter long word here] means, Gansey.” / all his callouts with blue
·         OTP: pynch
·         Brotp: gansey/adam
·         Head Canon: I have very specific headcanons for him but like………. idk it’s too long
·         Unpopular opinion: binch idk
·         A wish: he lives a happy, long life with his famer boyfriend and adoptive daughter.
·         An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: just let my son be happy, alright? Happy and safe
·         5 words to best describe them: a mess, motivated, sad, intuitive, angry
·         My nickname for them: idk??
Noah Czerny
·         Why I like them: He’s literally so cute and sweet??? But also??? kinda terrifying. A+
·         Why I don’t: Because I’m halfway through trk and idk whats happening with him
·         Favorite line: “He threw me out the window!” / “Glitter! Whoops!” / “I’ve been dead for seven years.” / “I’ve told you I was dead. I’m dead.” / all his interactions with blue rip
·         OTP: god…. i don’t ship him romantically with anyone???
·         Brotp: Ronan/Noah // Blue/ Noah
·         Head Canon: like with everyone they’re too specific rip
·         Unpopular opinion: That he’s Good? idk
·         A wish: that he does whatever the hell he wants
·         An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: he passes on? does he? Don’t tell me
·         5 words to best describe them: cute, scary, eccentric, gullible, creative
·         My nickname for them: none
 Joseph Kavinsky
·         Why I like them: i just love him, alright? he’s garbage, i know. but like……… you can tell he’s been through a lot in life, and who wouldn’t be fucked up after their dad tried to murder them? and he’s very… gung-ho about everything i love it. and how blunt he is? live for it.
·         Why I don’t: he could…. Not use homophobic slurs. Lmao dude, ur gay af, u can stop.
·         Favorite line: “It’s either with me or against me.” / tbh all his shots at gansey/ronan being together / that exchange with ronan when he was talking about his past
·         OTP: god………………………… lavinsky…………….. shoot me i know. also him and proko.
·         Brotp: him and proko…. And lavinsky tbh.
·         Head Canon: i have a lot riperoni
·         Unpopular opinion: he’s a Good character. Maybe not a good person, but…..
·         A wish: him not being dead would be pretty great.
·         An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: the worst has already happened so wtf else could tear me down? (this is not an invitation………..)
·         5 words to best describe them: gay, blunt, asshole, sad, jealous
·         My nickname for them: none
 Henry Cheng
·         Why I like them: Because he’s so nice to everyone? Like he helps Blue at school when they fake that fight. He offered to fly places with her. And all his interactions with Gansey? A+
·         Why I don’t: I literally don’t know if I trust him or not? Like I’m sure I can but that thing with the robot bee? Rude.
·         Favorite line: Honestly…. Every line he says is iconic. / “Life is a show.” / the interaction with gansey in blue lily, lily blue / the interaction with gansey in the Aglionby hidey hole
·         OTP: i don’t ship him romantically with anyone rip
·         Brotp: him and gansey also him and blue tbh
·         Head Canon: don’t have any tbh
·         Unpopular opinion: Idk
·         A wish: that he’s happy and stops being fucking…………. mysterious.
·         An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen: that he fucks everyone over? (please don’t tell me if he does or doesn’t but like………… pls henry)
·         5 words to best describe them: helpful, funny, charitable, dramatic, eccentric
·         My nickname for them: none
