haven't finished watching 1899 yet but the fascinating thing about it is that they put just about every single horror trope they could think of in there and yet none of them are executed well. for every single story element, i can name a show that Did It Better™

anyway. wow. a long time ago I coined the tag #alpha bitch of cuntyland to refer to hyuna and i firmly believe i was so right for that. there are very few performers in kpop men or women that can channel the energy and charisma hyuna can. she is very sexually aggressive in a non feminine way that reads to me as kinda queer adjacent - in a way she is the mirrored version of taemin.... and while her singing abilities are adequate at best she knows how to modulate her voice (which i admit can be an acquired taste for some) but she can emote REALLY well. whatever she wants to sell people WILL buy

plus i think she stands out from the rest because unlike your other run of the mill cunty female soloists like sunmi or hyolyn for example - hyuna does not adopt an image that appeals to the male gaze. she doesn't shy away from ugly and while very sexually charged her performance and visuals always have that "her pussy might actually have teeth" vibe you know? idk if i'm making sense but it's like. she is simply a very weird woman and she doesn't objectify herself for the camera or at least not in a way that you can expect men to watch her and fantasize about her. she exploits her sexuality for herself and for whoever is weird enough to catch her and resonate with it which i think is amazing and in a society as misogynistic as south korea - highly admirable.

omg welcome. i have recently been afflicted with something similar so i do have recs!! in terms of canon — which i will say i have middling opinions about, and i'll admit that i haven't really read any comics older than the 90s — i'll recommend the comics that really got me In Trouble: Batman: The Knight (2021). 10 issues by Chip Zdarsky and Carmine Di Giandomenico. this remains my batman holy grail. it's about bruce's journey to becoming batman and focuses on pivotal experiences in his education. it also features my favorite hot sexy murderous ex husband, minhkhoa khan. also, and most importantly, has some of the best written bruce and alfred interactions that i've read.

Nightwing (2016) #78—. by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo. idk this was one of the first ones i read and i just really enjoy the punchy art and the action and the dialogue. from my understanding from #78 onward, the issues are trying to maybe breathe more life and color into nightwing's stories, and for me it works. it's just super fun and cute and i love dick grayson.

Dark Knights of Steel (2021). another Tom Taylor, this time with Yasmin Putri. idk if you told me a year ago that i would be into reading a DC fantasy AU where superman is a prince and batman is his loyal guard i would have laughed in your face. but it's really very fun and the art is excellent. i have quibbles about the worldbuilding, but the robins make it worth it. the robins feature and they are delightful. excellent brainworm material overall. it's still ongoing and i'm not sure how many issues are planned.

Batman/Superman: World's Finest (2022). this one's by Mark Waid and !!! Dan Mora (whose art i cannot stress enough makes me cry) and it's set to be 10 issues, there's one more coming in december. it's got great sort of vintagey vibes and is just really really fun, featuring dick grayson robin who i would run into a burning building for.

for batman proper i'll say i've been kind of cherrypicking issues to read, but i read a good long run of Batman (2016) starting with #102 because, you guessed it, it's the introduction of minhkhoa khan, aka the ghost-maker. i also enjoyed the Fear State saga (#112-117), but most recently i've been very into the recent issues by Chip Zdarsky and Jorge Jimenez starting with #125, which sets up a conflict between batman and failsafe—an AI bruce himself created in case he ever needed to be taken down. so far the failsafe saga has given me:

bruce badly beaten and bleeding <3

the whole family banding together to try to stop failsafe

batman zur-en-arrh, which is like, if batman fell into a bucket of colorful paint

so, so many tim drake feelings

just to name a few.

PHEW so for non-comic media, i recommend:

Batman: Wayne Family Adventures. a webcomic from Webtoon by CRC Payne and Starbite. new episodes every week and they're FREE and they focus on slice-of-life family stuff and some character-centric episodes, which is all i've ever wanted really. this was the first batman thing i read, which kicked me off into looking into canon more, resulting in this hilarious set of messages to my friend spanning probably no more than a few hours:

for movies, i don't tend to vibe with the characterization of bruce (and damian. and dick. and talia..) but i enjoyed Batman: Bad Blood (2016) and Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010). also Please Watch The Lego Batman Movie. seriously it's really good and fun

for video games, i've only played Batman: Arkham Knight (2015) out of the legendary series of games by Rocksteady. but man is it A Game (admiring). i also do have a lot of fun playing Gotham Knights (2022) because it's focused on the kids in the batfamily, but i will admit that it sure is A Game (derogatory).

jesus this is getting long. in terms of fic, i would probably have to make a separate post for all of the fic that's lit my brain on fire but you can check out my fic rec tag here on tumbo and my public bookmarks on AO3 for some of my favorites. i also highly endorse all of the fics in @vinelark 's batfam fic rec thread on twitter.

okay here's my final horizons review that nobody asked for :) the short summary is an overall like 8/10 personally with high highs and low lows to average it all out there, but like . god those highs are high

speaking of i played on hard mode for the entire thing and did not change it a single time so this also influences my perception but like im a loser tryhard sweaty gamer so that probably just added to the positives for me ngl JGKLASDFJL;KS okay anyways

amy gameplay 8/10, tails gameplay 8/10, knuckles gameplay 6/10

i am SO FUCKING SERIOUS WHEN I SAY KNUCKLES WOULD BE LIKE 9/10 IF HE HAD FREE CLIMBING AND WASN'T LIMITED TO THE RED SPOTS like it makes sense in this scenario since he's literally free dlc and like the game wasn't really made with knuckles in mind therefore if he was given free range to climb and shit like SA2 it might be weird or just lead to things you super weren't intended to do etc. BUT like. im just saying. in a perfect world he would be able to climb on all surfaces and that would be more than enough for me to forgive his glide's super wide turns (i already forgive it because it makes sense it's just like. from a player feel perspective)

i can't forgive some of those awful camera angles though it's the same issue i have with sonic when he wall climbs, wall climbing just has bad camera angles that i greatly dislike u__u also i think i was most looking forward to playing as knuckles so i was just kinda disappointed he isn't more punchy i want PUNCHY

amy was super fun to play and would've been a 9 but i am in fact a hammer believer, i know they like at least bring it up in game why she doesn't hammer more but i AM a hammer enjoyer and i think if she had more swingy hammer movesets it would be like. chef's kiss i love her floatiness and tarot cards

tails is tails he's so broken LMAOOOO and the wrench attack shit is genuinely really good and so funny, his entire thing fits perfectly with the fact that he's like, not really a Fighter fighter guy and matches with previous tails gameplay .... but i do still want a homing attack for specifically objects not enemies or something. idk that'd be hard to handle sometimes but that's my single grievance i thought tails was really good he's so cute :)

in general i wish all 3 had more combat options but again. it's free dlc. in the future if they do like sonic adventure 3 or whatever then i'll be more harsh for not having more moves for them like sonic but this is free dlc

sonic gameplay 8.5/10

i'm crazy and i thought the towers were a lot of fun, my favorite WOULD'VE BEEN tower 2 except the pink squares not respawning is genuinely like girl what's wrong with you + tower 5 eked out being my favorite anyways in the end

my favorites in order were 5, 2, 4, 1, and 3 (3 was by far the easiest but also like . i am so not into the wall climbing camera JGKALSDJFKLASDJ and also i had the funny glitch where the boostpad clipped me out of the tower which like, funny but now i have to climb the tower again) i thought these were super fun platforming challenges with the only grievance being they're literally WAY more difficult than anything from base game and so the sudden jump is like actually insane expecting little timmy to play frontiers on like hard mode which is very easy, and then doing this

the combat trials were disappointing bc like. .. the first one had some difficulty to it and then the rest were snzzzz and then suddenly MASTER KING KOCO BABYYYYY but again im insane. and deranged. i thought a time/ring limit boss rush was sick as fuck and perfect parry is what i wished the actual base game parry was so like. yeah. but again the boss fights weren't Made for perfect parry so especially wyvern, figuring out was like harder than necessary since this is something they throw at you with no warning or prior practice in the base game or anything

i had fun though. i had gamer fun and joy. so like <- sick in the head i just felt the thrill of battle and violence and any time i figured out the parry timing/got consistent with it and i was like being the ultimate speedrun gamer it's like. YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also kellin quinn's vocals carried me because god the music never gets old dude that shit pumped me up (helps i only had to fight knight twice and the problem child was just wyvern lol)

AND THE FINAL BOSS .... supreme still lowkey is a very very very very mid boss. and the new THE END doesn't change it a Ton because like after you see the sickass cutscene and stuff, it becomes kind of a mid boss again but with really hype animations and all .... like it's not a hard fight. it's just ... jank .... the controls feel kinda wonky when you're trying to target the tube .... the camera is weird because it's so easy for sonic to not be visible from all the trees, so while parrying the meteors isn't hard it's just like ... why would you do this to me

final boss fight itself is like 7/10 carried by the visuals and setting, but then the end of the boss fight is like WHOOOOOOOOOOO FUCK YEAH FUCK YEAH FUCK YEAH LETS GOOOOO I FUCKING LOVE SONIC THE HEDGEHOG YYEAHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHH so like overall good dlc imo

He finds you sitting on the floor, in front of the TV, the controller sitting unused in front of you as you scroll through something on your phone. How is it that you can still seem so intimidating even in such a casual environment?

Curse his shy demeanor. He could have asked you out to dinner by now, if he had Namjoon’s confidence.

You look up when you hear him shuffle on the carpet. For the briefest moment, you hold his gaze, and he feels like he’s on fire. But then, you say:

“Oh, hey, I’ve got your hoodie. Do you want it back now?”

Without a second thought, he answers: “Sure.”

You rise from the floor and walk back to your room, pocketing your phone as you go. Jungkook’s not sure if he’s supposed to follow, but he does anyway. He doesn’t want to walk in on Namjoon and your roommate doing anything weird.

His hoodie is draped over the back of your desk chair, and you fold it with practiced ease. There’s something so easy about being around you,

“Wait, if you don’t want it now, we can just set it by your coat? It’s kind of warm in here, I guess.” It’s the way you’re biting your lip after you say the words that has him making a potentially regrettable choice.

“I like you.”

Kook, you absolute fuckwagon! Why would you—

“You like me?” Your voice is small, fragile even, as it meets his ears.

“Um.” He rubs the back of his neck. He can feel his heart pounding, a rushing sound running through his ears. “Yeah. I—wow—”

“I like you, too.”

He almost misses the words. They’re so quiet. The only reason they register at all is because his heart goes from running away to coming to a full stop. He’s reeling.

“What.”

He says it as a statement, not even a question. What are words again? What are statements? Questions? What are—

“I like you, too. I, um … I think you’re cute. I’d like to get to know you better.”

You’re fidgeting nervously, your hands twisting around each other like Jungkook’s own thoughts have twisted about themselves. Somehow, you find it within yourself to keep speaking.

“I’m not mad about the thing a few weeks ago. I was—I overreacted. My ex was an asshole and when we broke up he said some shit and I was in my head but I’ve been seeing my therapist again and it’s better and I’m not mad and—”

You stop suddenly, biting your lip hard enough that he’s concerned you’ll bleed. Jungkook wants to bite it instead, but gently, as it deserves to be treated. Just a nibble. Just a taste is all he wants.

“I’m sorry, I’m rambling. I—”

“Can I kiss you?”

The words are so quiet when he says them, but you look at him and nod, and suddenly he’s closed the distance, pressing his own lips to yours.

hey buddy what’s this batfam getting dropped into pnf fic idea?

This is fully a crack idea formed in my head because I dared to rewatch pnf while hyperfixating and remembered how much I thought the pnf marvel crossover was meh

Anyways

We start with the batfamily somehow getting transported into the pnf universe (idk how. Maybe it was a piece of technology from a mission. Maybe Phineas and Ferb are messing with the laws of physics again. Pick your favorite)

They get dropped in random places and only like half the bats are in uniform

So Bruce gets dropped in the platy-cave (I am fully convinced that’s what it’s called) right before Perry gets his mission for the day

Dick (and maybe Babs?) gets dropped in whatever room in owca Monogram and Carl film in

Jason gets dropped at Doofenshmirtz’s but only Vanessa is home

Cass is dropped of at Stacy’s

Alfred, Steph, Tim, Damian, and Duke are left in the Flynn-Fletcher backyard

The bats use their comms to coordinate a meeting place after Bruce and Dick talk to Monogram and he agrees to use owca’s resources to get them home (again idk how but it’ll be at the end of the day)

Bruce is sent on Perry’s mission with him because owca considers his bat motif enough to count him as an animal agent amd Bruce will never turn down a chance to learn new skills even if it’s from a platypus

Dick stays behind at owca to chill and help out but then he mentions he’s a former acrobat and Monogram takes him to the company gymnastics gym to teach him things since Monty refuses to do acrobat stuff anymore (this is the part where Babs and Carl would take over the getting the bats home project and bond over being techie red heads)

Vanessa invites Jason to go with her to meet with her friends and boyfriend and Jason’s just like “sure. why not.” (Idk how old he is in this yet but he’s older than her and being used to Gotham is like these kiddos could use some supervision)

Vanessa ends up meeting up with Candace, Jeremy, Stacy, and Monty

Candace has brought Steph (more like Steph dragged Candace away from what the boys were doing but shhhh) and Stacy has brought Cass (Stacy just thinks Cass is a new random friend she’s met while Vanessa and Candace are very sure that Jason and Steph aren’t from the pnf universe)

Cue Jason Steph and Cass doing the Spider-Man pointing meme

Tim, Damian, and Duke get wrapped up in whatever Phineas and Ferb are doing that day (idk what insert your favorite invention and inator pairing here)

Buford is stunned that this new nerd (Tim) is also able to beat people up

Damian is fascinated by the competency and skills of the fireside girls

Duke’s just along for the ride tbh

Doofenshmirtz is surprised when Perry had brought a very punchy friend

Perry basically has to walk Bruce through the procedure (cue platypus expressions for “yes I know we can both break out of these traps almost instantly, and yes his idea is dumb as shit and not really criminal, but the point is to let him talk through his trauma”)

Also Alfred is talking British things and antiques with Lawrence and Linda

Eventually the day goes as predictably as you would expect from a pnf day at which point the bats all sort of reunite at owca headquarters and go home and wonder what the fuck that universe even was

stole this off @bbcphile just bc i wanted to do it. this goes back to like 2017 because i am not particularly prolific outside of fic meme fills.

01. everything grows stronger in the light, E, mysterious lotus casebook first: "this is biological warfare," di feisheng says, looming large over li lianhua's tiny kitchen table. last: he rubs his nose against di feisheng's collarbone, lulled by his partner's steady, even breathing, and drifts off.

02. darling, roll the window down, T, bad buddy fic meme dump first: in your third year, you take the train out to the ocean. last: you are alive and you are in love and you are here, where you belong.

03. like summer in your teeth, T, bad buddy first: In a fit of mild insanity, or maybe mild drunkenness, Wai invites Korn out for a drink. last: "Yeah," he says, thinking about summer at beach, sunlight through the blinds, and the sound of waves outside. "We have time."

04. boy tasting wild cherry, G, bad buddy first: somewhere along the way it becomes a tradition: a long weekend at the beach, just the three of them. last: it's more than enough.

05. kindling, T, bad buddy first: joint field training, they'd said, and so far that has meant sitting in a windowless room, waiting. last: then, "pran," he shouts, breaking into a run, and leaves both of them behind.

10. the shape of you, T, daiya no ace first: Ryousuke graduates from Seido almost exactly a month before his nineteenth birthday, cool spring sun shining down like a farewell benediction. last: He's still like a rocket sometimes, quick to take off, but they both know where he'll land, north-star-steady, compass true.

bonus: mysterious lotus casebook wip (current) first: in the end, what they find is a body. (current) last: regret or love or grief or hope, di feisheng has only ever laid claim to what he can carry.

patterns: there are two sets of related stories in here (the bad buddy fic meme fill/boy tasting wild cherry and kindling/light a match, start a riot) and both of them i consciously mirrored the opening of the previous work. i will probably refrain from doing that again seeing as i've done it twice now.

i tend to start in the middle of action with openings and, if not, there's an at least somewhat atmospheric scene setting sentence because atmosphere is extremely important to me. endings tend to be short and punchy (eg, a couple of these i included the last two sentences) or contemplative. not on show here, but for "things you said" meme fills i do tend to end on dialogue since that's kind of the point.

idk man, i write on vibes and instinctive grasp of grammar, i can give no advice about craft other than "don't give up." the main advantage of being a fandom old that's still writing is that, even when i don't like my own writing, i have a level of baseline competence that comes from having continued to write.

i am partial to "Crow" being Tim's new identity after reading one very convincing post so now i am imagining Martha making up some fucked up story of why crows are associated with funerals or why a group of them is called a murder which Bruce tells to Tim after Tim came back from attending 80th funeral of a dearly departed loved one

See, “Crow” doesn’t work for me as a name for two reasons.

The first is this guy—

The second is that (and this is a problem I’ve had with pretty much all fan-names I’ve seen, and several “official” hero names)—it’s just not punchy enough.

It just kinda…thuds. And like, crows are cool! I love crows! But just “Crow” is…it’s just not enough.

A good hero name (or villain name, even), IMO, has to have a good mouthfeel and a good brainfeel.

“Good mouthfeel” meaning it needs to flow, it needs to feel good to say it. (Probably something to do with syllable endings and iambic pentameter or something idk.)

“Good brainfeel” meaning it has to have an interesting set of connotations behind it that are a complementary match to the hero (or villain) who’s using it. Also, IMO, it should be pretty self-explanatory. (People would ask wtf a “Corvid” is.)

Like—Robin. In the words of Ghost-maker, not even a scary bird! But it has a good mouthfeel and when combined with a chirpy lil kid sidekick, it works.

I think a lot of people go with “good brainfeel” and they neglect the “good mouthfeel” aspect. Even the comics do it—I’m convinced that Owlman hasn’t caught on more because it sounds awkward as hell!

(“Talon,” otoh…that name fucks.)

Anyway, I do very much like the idea of Bruce waxing poetic about weird shit his mom told him to Tim about crows. I’ll take that!
