i remember being brought up christian like, almost concerned that i never felt a connection to any of the shit they were talkin about,
and when i was younger i was like "oh no! am i bad for not feeling connected to god?? is it bad i feel like my dead mom doesnt talk to me or watch over me?? am i horrible for pretending?????"
but turns out i just had Autism Powers that made me immune to it and i was able to completely sever myself from the idea of being Christian at the ripe old age of like 13. and it was such a HUGE comfort to see that there were all these other beliefs and spiritual sort of things that other people chose to believe in and didnt necessarily treat their beliefs as COLD HARD UNDENIABLE FACT the way christians treat the existence of god & heaven & hell
like now that i am older i know i was in fact traumatized by the culturally catholic beliefs my family held & forced on us all, but i am really immensely grateful that my child self looked at all the other aspects of christianity that would horrify most other children into behaving/conforming, and basically just went, "okay, source?"
and that was the end of that

hi again! (this is the same anon from a while ago who was asking for your thoughts on Aemond bc I wanted to adopt a new blorbo)
I really appreciate the thoughts you provided on him and also all the headcanons you've been posting!!
and, well.... for better or for worse, it worked and now I am totally and completely obsessed with this man!!!!!
I haven't actually gotten around to watching hotd yet, but I've been consuming Aemond content via fanvids, gifsets, fics, etc. and I am DOWN BAD lmaooooo
anyway, all your headcanons for him are always so on-point, and I was wondering what you think about show!Aemond's taste in music?
I know you've mentioned that modern!Aemond likes metal, but I guess if show!Aemond had access to modern music (sorry is this like a totally crazy question?????) what do you think he would gravitate toward?
I feel like I could totally see him as like an indie-folk guy, mostly for the lyrics. just with knowing that he studied philosophy and history and is kind of reserved and quiet (most of the time) it seems to me like he might enjoy songs with really poetic lyrics. maybe this is just me projecting bc I'm a huge The Oh Hellos fan (but what is fandom without a little self-projection onto your favorite characters? 😂), but I feel like he might like their stuff bc their lyrics are so intricate and make so many references and allusions to other texts, religions, and mythologies, as well as self-references that introduce recurring themes and motifs to their discography. idk tho again this is probably just bc I love their music so frickin much and I feel like our dear little nerd Aemond would enjoy feeling smart and getting all the references ☺️
(also, um that line in "The Truth is a Cave" that goes "I was bound and determined to be the child that you wanted" ?????? very Aemondcore imo 😭😭)
but I would really love to know your thoughts!!
thank you for blessing me with all your Aemond thoughts!!!!! I appreciate it soooooo much!!!!!! ☺️☺️
Oh hello there, dear anon!! I was hoping to hear from you again to see if you'd seen the show and I am screaming over you being obsessed with him now! he truly does grow on you, huh?
Ohhhhhhhhh this question is so interesting, omg, thank you so much for dropping it! At first I was like, huh but modern!Aemond is still Aemond?? and then I got it lol! ok so if show!Aemond had access to modern music.....
I totally agree with him leaning into folksy-indie music. I don't listen to it as much because the slow-ish pace of the genre doesn't do it for me but I think the vibe and the subject matter of it would definitely be up Aemond's alley. I think he'd definitely lean into classical music, and one composition I feel like he'd be immediately drawn to is to 'The Planets' by Gustav Holst (and tying it to modern!Aemond somewhat, Op 32: Mars, Bringer of War, is what inspired Black Sabbath's riff for their song 'Black Sabbath'.
On another note, I definitely see him as a Hozier fan! as well as Jamie Campbell Bower's solo works outside of his band, Counterfeit. 'Paralyzed' and 'Start The Fire' are such Aemond songs for me. There's also this singer called Violet Orlandi, who does a lot of acoustic covers of metal and alternative music, and really transforms them into something out of this world, super eerie and cinematic without losing the spirit of the song. So I think that would be an excellent tie in between show!Aemond and modern!Aemond. Her covers of 'War Pigs', 'Paint It Black', 'Freak on a Leash', 'The Unforgiven' and 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' give me LIFE. I'd also like to throw in Kate Bush in there, especially the songs 'Night of the Swallow', 'Jig of Life', 'Hello Earth' and the whole 'The Sensual World' album.

i had some shower thoughts and now it’s Mormon On Main time y’all
so! it was a long and convoluted thought process, don’t ask me how i got here, but i started thinking about how God like. “operates” in this world/with us/etc etc, and
so like. people like to ask “why does God let bad things happen” and people also like to say “well why do YOU let bad things happen” and people like to say “this is God’s plan for me” and “it was just a coincidence” and anyway i think everything is like. one huge mix of all of that.
(lots of mormon lore and scripture references and stuff under the cut that you might not get if you aren’t mormon but like i’m not saying you shouldn’t read it if you still want to, just that i’m not explaining references in this post but i’m totally up for answering questions)
so my car just broke down. what happened was, the brakes went out. now, this did not happen randomly, or out of the blue. i knew this was coming, i just didn’t know when.
this is not a “God let this terrible thing happen to meeee oh woooooeee”
this is not a “your God doesn’t care about you or else your car would have worked”
this probably isn’t even a “blessing in disguise”!!!
what this is, is *shrek voice* layers
so i have not been maintaining my car. it’s 19 years old and i haven’t been taking good care of it. i forget oil changes and i ignore the idiot lights and i definitely totally ignored the horrific grinding noises every time i drove to work for a month. so, naturally, my brakes gave out.
they gave out in the parking lot at work. literally just before i turned into the road.
they could have given out in the road. they could have given out on the freeway. i could have been in a wreck because of it. i could have died. instead, they gave out in the parking lot, so i could back up, stick it in a parking space, and get a ride home with my boss.
did God look down and decide to nuke my car that day? no. the brakes giving out were my own dang fault. bc i chose not to deal with them, i chose to run this car into the ground, i chose to kept driving it and ignore all the warning signs.
but i do, wholeheartedly, believe that God had a hand in the timing of when they gave out.
and like. i think that’s true for everything? and i also think that members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints often like to take even this concept and think of it as wholly black and white.
okay i put the real name of the church in my post, from here on out i’m using mormons and mormonism, my apologies pres. nelson. luv u buddy. #sustained
but so in my lovely shower, where i have my most intelligent thoughts (honestly, the only place i have intelligent thoughts), i mixed this up with some thoughts i’ve been having for a while, about things like america being “the chosen land” and native american genocide and pioneers and history is written by the victors and and and.
no, i do not presently have scriptures to back me up. i’m a bad mormon. but if you’re mormon, and you’ve lived in america for at least one fourth of july, you can probably guess what scriptures in the book of mormon i mean.
i’ve noticed a lot of lack of nuance among members. and that’s not just a mormon thing, that’s an everyone thing, people like black and white thinking, and we have all been guilty of this, no matter how sophisticated or intelligent or woke you are. own up to it. but like, it can be a bit more of a problem when this is what we actually teach and discuss in church, and avoid nuances.
i feel like a lot of people think of the things that happened in the book of mormon as God-given prophecies? which, yes, is true in a lot of cases. but then they go on to say that things like friggin columbus finding america and the revolutionary war and all that, that all that was “prophesied,” and when i say “prophesied,” i mean “God made it happen.”
my point of view isn’t necessarily that God made it happen, but that They saw it happen, and told the prophets in the BOM about it, and said “this is what will happen to your descendants.”
i don’t necessarily think that God 100% punished the nephites by making them dwindle in disbelief and also get murdered in war. i think that, again, They saw it, They told prophets what was gonna happen, They knew it, They know everything, right? but like. i doubt that God had any pleasure in watching the “””evil””” people die in a war, regardless of who started it or why. but They can’t necessarily intervene all the time because agency (a whole nother argument there). and yeah They made that promise to enos (i’m pretty sure it was enos i told you i’m a bad mormon i don’t have the proper handle on my theology that i should) about enos’ ancestors, etc etc, and They made the promises to noah about the flood and everything, and to other people and cultures and even religions. and i believe They’ll keep the promises they made, but also like
if you don’t maintain your car, it’s gonna break, and that’s your fault? if you raise your children to bake a cake a certain way and it isn’t as delicious and they do it all their lives, that’s still (partially) your fault? if you are given a position of authority and continue to preach to a congregation a certain way and they follow that path, that’s still partially your fault!!! it’s your influence!!! it isn’t always 100% God’s!
and yeah They speak through people, and They act through people, and They keep my brakes from going out at 50 miles on the freeway before i rearend someone, but the brakes going out in the first place was my own fault.
so wow this is getting long. i’m not apologizing. if you read this far, i’ll bake you cookies (but you have to come to my house).
back to the point i wanted to make when i sat down. (american) mormons like to bring up the verses about AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL as if like. God magically laid down the yellow brick road for george washington to chase the british out on. i believe that yeah, God had a hand in the religious freedoms that allowed joseph smith to found the church here.
i don’t believe God had a hand in the genocide, wars, murder, and slavery that built this country.
full stop.
manifest destiny is echoed when we spout off those verses we assume are about columbus and the founding of america and all that. we’re really good about ignoring things like when our pioneer ancestors killed native americans to settle out here in the west. and again - yeah, we were guided by God to get out here to utah. but i don’t think God was there saying “oh also kill those other settlers” in the mountain meadows massacre (also i don’t think good ol’ brigham young said that, either. what a problematic fave he was, though).
and idk i just. i feel like (american) latter-day saints (is that our preferred identity term now? i forget) sometimes just like want to believe that all our prophets and apostles and all our scriptural “heroes” are wholly infallible people who never made a mistake. i think we like to forget that history is written by the victors, and things like the war chapters in the BOM were definitely written by the victors. and i’m not here tryna say stuff like, #nephiwastheworst #lamanandlemuelforever, or whatever, but like. joseph smith screwed up and got the plates taken away. we know that. i don’t think nephi (any of em) was 100% without fault. captain moroni likely did some pretty awful stuff (or allowed others under his command to do awful stuff) during the wars, but no one is gonna wanna talk about that, and so they never did in the scriptures. (the thousand[plus sixty] stripling warriors never did anything wrong in their lives tho and this is the hill i will die on).
i think that we just need to put in some nuance to our studying. people screwed up. they were still heroes. they can still be our heroes. but i think that by using this black and white thinking and avoiding discussion of history, of cultural differences between now and then, of condoning nephi killing laban and then saying murder is wrong, and then saying we shouldn’t have gun control, of avoiding all that difficult thinking, we’re really doing a disservice to ourselves, and to the generations after us, and to the generations that came before us.

HI GUYS oh gosh i’ve ALMOST!!!!! finished my final assignment😪 i wanna share it with you guys so i’ll do it under a read more dsofnefvdcn i’m really hoping that this does well the past month i’ve been working my ass off to get it done... but hiii i’ll be back normal-ish by next week maybe? and with this last assignment means i’ve finished university... frick... i do have a bunch of exhibition stuff to do in june though but i’ll be kinda here wdjfnefkjn ANYWAY!!! I MISSED U ALL I HOPE I CAN TALK TO YOU GUYS MORE :(((
if ur interested in wtf i’ve been doing dwjvnijef u can check it out in the read more if not hi i’ll be back to annoy u all sooooooon (also btw warning  it’s SUPER LONG HHHHH CRAP)
OKAY......... LET’S GET TO IT...................... hhhh where do i start askfndfksncl okay this is my ‘major project’ i was set it in february but only ~properly started to work on it the last month or so bc i was doing an EXTENDED dissertation which meant i was doing 10,000 words instead of 6000... which i did so well on i’m so happy i’m a lil annoyed i was 2 marks off a first but anyway!!!! ONTO THIS...
at the end we have a exhibition at university, AND we’re going to a huge graduate exhibition in london which i’m so nervous about there’s gonna be tonnes of people seeing my work and being all pretentious and judging me am i gonna cry? probably yes.
i’ll try and explain as best i can... i’ve drawn a lot of inspiration from various sources to explain the idea it’s kinda???? mad adjsfkjfc or as my lecturer said “it’s either mad or ingenious” which. if i’m honest. is true dsoivnendc
okay... i had this idea originally about how the landscape is written about in literature and conveyed in words vs. what is actually seen by our own eyes? and talking about that sort of relationship between storytelling/the written word and visual language/the art of seeing??? and looking at it through myths and legends!!! bc i’m a slut for mythology :/
then the idea progressed and i was looking at the landscape in terms of mythical creatures, like looking at it as if i was david attenborough if he was talking about a dragon’s lair wdofnefndklx... so it became that BUT
as i was researching and having tutorials it occurred to me about the ‘four classical elements’ yes we’re talking avatar the last airbender kinda inspo here ladies!!!! and sort of? breaking the landscape down to those components, as well as relating those elements to the mythical creatures (because some mythical creatures are associated with particular elements!!!!)
SO.... HERE COMES SOME MADNESS........ i was looking up archetypal imagery and symbols and characters (and in relation to psychology and literature - check out comparative mythology and jung’s archetypes it’s rly interesting!!!! fuck freud and his theories tho) - and one thing that jumped out at me was the concept of the world tree/the tree of life (which is also a biological term adapted by charles darwin and his theory of evolution) and how it links the heavens to earth and the netherworld... well. in my interpretation, i’ve created a sort of family tree/phylogenetic tree... which has the tree of life at the top, the second row is the four classical elements, the third row being landscapes that also represent those elements and describing them as habitats for specific mythical creatures which can be found being depicted across multiple cultures and religions - such as dragons, fairies, and mermaids!!!!
it’s also influenced by ideas in science, history, spirituality, psychology, philosophy (and of course photography bc that’s what i study LMAO)... for example the theory of everything plays a part - like these notions that everything in the universe is connected - which is also a similar concept of qi, in chinese tradition which is the “life force” or “energy” that everything in existence possesses? -  like in a way i’m finding all these similar concepts in various cultures and religions, and finding patterns and exploring the various meanings and interpretations... looking at how we all experience these similar things - even though there are some differences? and how our own knowledge/culture/various other factors influence our ways of thinking and how we interpret things??? sdofnjfic idk if this makes much sense... it’s a rly intense and massive undertaking of so much research that rly i’ve BARELY touched on bc i’ve only had like 3/4 months to undertake it alongside having my depressive episodes etc and my dissertation... anyway!!!!!!!
it’s pretty much just me going - oh hey. i fucking love learning about different cultures and things like that. i would like to read and research and i love finding patterns in things and utilising photography as a way of explaining things that i cannot explain in words. please enjoy how my brain thinks. it basically never shuts up!!!!! asodfnfjdsk yeah... honestly i’ve even thought about how it could develop further like... looking at specific biospheres/habitats/subcategories of those things... i rly like categorising things wdofnoejrdfkl but not like... in a traditional sense i guess? hmm OMG THE BEST ANALOGY I CAN THINK OF IS THINK OF IT LIKE HOW POKEMON ARE CATEGORISED??? LIKE BY TYPE/MOVES/BODY TYPE/HEIGHT/WEIGHT/ETC. like i’ve looked at various modern media for inspo too like how ancient mythology is depicted in modern media and how its adapted etc.
ANYWAY LEMME SO U THE PICS!!!!! i made them so they kinda look like examples in a scientific text? i guess? dsokfndw;lwsm anyway i hope this wasn’t too much for y’all to read gosh i need to learn to shut up
