[water simulations in blender 2.8+]
I got a dm asking about how I did the water and effects in my mermaid render/animation as well as this water render/animation so let's talk about making water effects and animations in blender as well as how to export the animation for a gif
These are the tutorial vids I used: "Easy Animated Oceans in Blender - Getting Started with the Ocean Modifier!" - The CG Essentials "CG Realism with Warbles in Blender - Lazy Tutorials" - IanHubert (timestamp 0:40)
this walk through relies on previous basic blender knowledge including nodes, but let me know if something specifically isn't clear, I'll do my best to help
Tutorial here: google doc

Wow!!! You’re such a talented 3D Artist!!! I hope to get as good as you one day!!! I love your art!!! Do you have any tips on how to improve or any Blender secrets/tips you use? Thank you and I hope you have any amazing day!!!
Thank you so much!! :D  I get asks super rarely and nice asks even more rarely, so it always makes my day to get one! ❤️  And as long as you keep at it you WILL become an awesome 3D artist eventually, you got this!!
As for tips, I guess just really flex those web searching skills? Back when I was first learning, I had the inside joke with myself that Blender had always online DRM (it doesn’t) because I couldn’t go more than like 10 minutes without searching for some term, technique, tutorial, etc. I have a [YouTube playlist] of a bunch of random tutorials I’ve watched and re-referenced over the years, and while it would probably be better for you to just search for more relevant things to your area of modeling, it could be fun to just watch some completely random tip videos! Personally, I really like tutorial channels like [IanHubert] or [CGMatter] because my learning style is “teach me a little bit and then let me brute force things to try and learn by hands-on trial and error,” ahaha.
Some even more general life tips are, if you’re like me and are prone to hyperfixating and/or burnout, oh my God please pace yourself and try to limit how many different areas you try to learn at once. I lived and breathed 3D modeling for the first few months I got into it, and I charged into that despair trough on a Dunning-Kruger graph at terminal velocity. I had a day where it seemed like everything opened up, I realize how little I actually knew and how overwhelming everything was, and drove myself into a bit of a panic attack. Thankfully, I’m stubborn as shit and kept working past it, because that easily could have been the end of my hobby, and I’m so glad it wasn’t.
Last bits of general advice I can think of: Start small and start silly. Starting small is obvious, but I’ve always had trouble managing the scope of projects. I’d say getting to the end of a workflow on a small project is more beneficial to learning than working for a long time on an in-depth project. For example, my texturing and rigging skills are lagging behind because I frequently burn out before I actually get to those phases, so I'm working on streamlining my projects.
Starting silly might sound odd, but working on a silly project that you and others will find funny no matter the end quality takes a lot of that beginner “I’m not good enough yet” edge off. That’s why so many of my animations are goofy as heck, because I had zero animation experience before this, and trying to jump straight into “normal” animations was a bit demoralizing because I’m still stuck in that uncanny valley of animation skills. But by making silly animations, I’m still learning some of the actual techniques, just without any of the pressure of wanting it to look good.
I hope some of that helped! I struggle a bit to think of answers to open-ended questions, but if you have any more specific questions, I’ll try to answer if they’re in my area of knowledge! 3D modeling is still very much a special interest of mine, so I love talking about it! :D  (Hence why this answer ended up being so long, heheh)

This is the technique I used to make pipes. This is something I haven’t done before, so it was a fun exercise.

Much with the foliage in my scene, i wanted to create as much detail as possible to bring the environment to life. One of the more dominant light sources in my scene was a lantern. since the scene was at night, it makes sense that there would be some moths buzzing about the lantern!
About was a great and informative tutorial by Ianhubert on how to create moths. this video helped me more than just with moths as it opened up more about blenders particle system and how creative you could be with. i really was tempted to create particle based ants or other insects for the scene - which would probably be far too distracting so i just stuck with the moths.
