Slightly exhausted, just a bit tipsy, and on my way to think about Neuvillette's reactions to receiving a genuine compliment. Specifically about his eyes. Because every compliment he's received has always been about some kind of learned behavior - his composure, his eloquence, his authority in court - and never about, well, himself. Especially not his eyes.

No, those were usually met with disdain, fear, or a general uneasiness. Even the most well meaning humans can't hold his gaze for very long - and the list of those that can is even shorter. It's something he's made peace with: catching the Iudex's eye is something most (if not all) Fontainians seek to avoid. Whether it's in the courtroom or on the street, Neuvillette's gaze is cold and impassive; aloof and indifferent to the passing of time around him.

Except..it isn't.

He's observant, curious; he casts a critical eye not in the case of judgement, but for the sake of his own lack of understanding. There's an innocence there -- no, not innocence. Even in your tipsy babbles, you had used the term "inexperience" to describe the heavily veiled emotion there. A barely there hint of softness - one that was most often seen when he spoke with the Melusines and rarely (yet with increased frequency) directed towards you.

Neuvillette finds it...unnerving in a sense. Not in a particularly negative way, but one that brings him a strange sense of calm. Peace bordering on comfort. For someone to notice his mannerisms and behaviors and see them not as the immortal eccentricities of the Chief Justice, but as features that make him who he is...well, he's not exactly sure how to feel about it. Perhaps it's because he doesn't understand how he's supposed to feel about this - about being known in such a rarely intimate way. And perhaps to you it isn't as intimate as it is in his mind (a feeling he hopes isn't as visible as the other emotions you've been able to find in his eyes) but he cannot help but hope that it is.

To have his own questions and curiosities met not with anxiety, but with genuine enthusiasm is already a shift for him. To then be seen by you - known by you - not as the Iudex of Fontaine or even as the Hydro Sovereign but as Neuvillette...he will have to take some time for himself to understand it.

But for now, he'll meet your eyes and give you a slight nod; a small acknowledgment and murmured "thank you" in response to your compliment. For now, he'll just have to hope that his veil of impartiality is enough to continue to hide these thoughts.

For now...for now.

After Alastor disappears again and the Vees get Vox back from the hotel crew, whatever mental block Vox had regarding Val and Vel starts to ease up. He still doesn’t remember their old relationship, but he can finally retain who they are from one day to another, like he could with the hazbins. It’s a fucking blessing for them to finally get to build a new relationship with him without it all getting wiped away at the end of each day.

As time goes by, Vox starts developing a little, schoolboy crush on Val, not remembering that before all this happened, they'd been together for 50 years. Vox has no idea how to go about this– he remembers having crushes on boys/men back when he was alive, but he wasn't exactly in a position to pursue those relationships– and Val barely registers that it's even happening, given how resigned he is to the fact that Vox will never love him again in the same way that he used to.

It's both cute and sad, watching Vox fumble around in the dark, trying to show Val he likes him in bizarre, almost childish ways that Val doesn't even register as attempts at flirting. Velvette can tell what's going on, but she's not sure what to do. Vox isn't in a state where he can be in a relationship (and probably never will be again), especially not the type that Val craves, so she's just stuck watching from the sidelines, not sure whether she should encourage or discourage this.

i’ve had a couple asks about the rest of the aquato family in FSAU. i’m still figuring out designs for the rest of them, but here are Dion and Frazie! (bonus Raz for scale. Frazie is the tallest of the sibs! Queepie is the shortest, and Mirtala is around Raz’s height.)

Dion stays with the family circus! i can’t imagine anything else for him, honestly. i like to imagine they get a little more established after the game - expand, maybe link up with some other acts. he gets a lot more confident, and basically steps into his role as Augustus’ successor (although the old man is still around and running things!)

things are... a little tense between him and Raz. they’re cordial, for sure, but i think at family gatherings there are a lot of snide comments haha. Dion still kind of sees Raz as betraying the family, and Raz is entirely done with trying to persuade him otherwise so there’s kind of a lingering animosity there.

Frazie goes through the intern program and trains at the Motherlobe for a while, but ultimately i think she decides she’s not really interested in being a Psychonaut? she really takes to the psychic stuff, though, and eventually she becomes kind of an informal field agent. she travels with the family caravan, but on the side she investigates local cryptids and psychic phenomena. i love the idea of Otto as her intern mentor (something about the Raz&Ford parallels), so she becomes kind of like his traveling informant.
