I posted this in an art discord & they said it should be a post so others (both non-artists & artists) could see it too, so I'm pasting it here with a just few edits to add context:
Having feelings about capitalism and art.
Like, got an unexpected Redbubble sale today. Unexpected because I genuinely never expected to see another after I took some advice and did the whole "raise your margins to 50% in protest so people will use Redbubble less because 'prices are too high'" (For those unaware, Redbubble is introducing a tier structure for artist accounts, where Redbubble will now be taking up to 50% of an artist's monthly earnings as an "account fee" if they end up in the "Standard" tier. Artists are upset about this and are finding various ways to protest the change.)
And it got me thinking about margins, and what it takes to run the company, and how much CEO's take home and just-
Ok so say base price for a product is $10. If your margin is 20% it sells for $12 and you take home $2. Redbubble takes 80%, and uses that to buy materials/print/pay workers. Ok, no argument. I want workers to be fairly compensated.
But you look it up, and the highest paid Redbubble executive makes $950,000 a year. Average executive salary is around $235,000 a year. You can't really find the info for the positions of workers (meaning those who labor to print the products) only that "the lowest compensated makes $34,000" -aka roughly $16 an hour at 40hrs a week. And good on them for paying the workers a decent wage if this info is correct. Hope they keep it up. Or pay them more even.
But then I keep coming back to the fact that the company needs the artists' work to even exist. So why, if the CEO is making nearly a million dollars a year and the company obviously isn't hurting for any money to compensate it's workers or run itself, why does everyone make artists feel greedy just for asking to not have our cut eaten into with added fees? Why are we made to feel bad if we express any disappointment that a CEO makes so much money off the designs of so many artists in comparison to the artists' cut?
Idk how to say it right. It's like we're just expected to collectively fork over our work, let someone else get obscenely rich off it while we make barely anything from it (or in the case of many social media platforms, make literally nothing from it), then then smile about it. Anything else is seen as artists being entitled or 'lazy' or idk what else.
Or we're told to "just raise your margins" like competitive pricing isn't a thing that exists. Not to mention that fact that whenever prices do go up, especially with art, those same people complain that the prices went up and look for something cheaper.
I always see people saying that artists are just jealous that they don't make more sales, or saying "well maybe you'd make more if your art was better" but they're completely missing the whole point that is: Maybe if a company literally depends on the creative 'content' of individuals to exist/profit, maybe don't treat them all as disposable?

the gang (+ jr and a.b)’s ideal date
(inside job) sorry if anyone’s done this before haha I just had this idea
reagan:
despite her being like my main crush/f/o, she was probably the hardest to do but I feel like it would really depend on her mood. she’d either want to go to a museum (“we both know museums are the sexiest places on Earth!”) or just chilling at home watching tv.
if you two go to a museum, she’d probably really enjoy holding your hand while you walk around. physical touch is more bearable for her when she’s engaging in her special interests or doing something she enjoys.
she also doesn’t watch a lot of tv, so when you’re watching stuff with her, she usually lets you pick what to watch. I think she’d enjoy things like physiological horror. (same reagan, same)
restaurants are a nightmare tho. like she gets so stressed and overwhelmed as it’s loud, and she really struggles to be herself in busy environments, especially when eating.
if she’s eating a comfort food though, she can manage!!
you also bond when ur in the car together! it sounds stupid, but she probably ends up talking about smth rlly random, and you two talk about it for hours.
it could just start off with smth like “hey,, y/n, is a hotdog a sandwich?”
and ya’ll most likely lightheartedly argue about it for ages.
she doesn’t say it a lot, but she really loves and appreciates spending time with you.
brett:
OH <33 BRETT’S SUCH A SUCKER FOR SIMPLE CUTE DATES
like take him on a picnic in the woods (he’d totally make you and him matching flower crowns)
also taking him to still valley and having an 80s style date, it would make him cry :((( /pos
speaking of, after a long day of work, pls cuddle him on the couch and watch the growing years with him <333
it would make his year
just anything soft & simple would just make brett melt :( like reagan he finds big dates v overwhelming
but if there was anywhere in particular he wanted to go, but couldn’t because he was so anxious, get the man a fidget toy to fiddle with.
gigi:
this was quite hard, but y’know those photoshoot places you can go to with pretty backgrounds, where you take photos? yea, she’d like those. then taking you to a fancy restaurant after.
also movie nights where you cuddle on the couch watching shit and she points out the subliminal messages in them.
smth like “hey, y/n, did you know that Hwang represents the shadow gouvernment?”
also I think as a treat, maybe once a month, if you’re comfortable enough, she’d take you to a club!
you’d dance together and it’s a v nice experience.
very big on double dates. idk why, she just gives that vibe.
also CLOTHES SHOPPING. like you two will go to the store, try on different clothes, and she WILL compliment you.
glenn:
again i find mr. dolphman hard to write so bear with me
my guy would melt if you took him to like an raf museum? like just him explaining all the parts of the plane, you not really understanding, but just saying “that’s lovely, dear,”
also classic dates! fancy restaurants, cinema, etc etc.
i think he’d be really into hearty food, like lasagne.
he’d also be obsessed with surprising you with food.
andre:
CONCERTS.
idk why, he’s just the type of guy to take you to a lot of concerts. he really enjoys high-energy experiences with you like that.
also going to get fast food at 3am. like my dude would randomly text you at 3:00 in the morning like “hey babe, wanna get mcdonalds?”
like gigi, he’d take you to clubs. but not as a treat like gigi, i mean like every 2 weeks.
myc:
y’know those 50’s style diners? yea. that’s myc’s shit.
also staying in and having deep conversations while jazz music plays on his record player.
just v classic, traditional dates. any fancy restaurant he will love.
im sorry i don’t have more for him 😭
jr:
GO GOLFING WITH HIM
pls he’d love that :((
like crazy golf specifically? just for fun
also he’d take you to fancy restaurants.
when I say fancy, I mean over £50 just for starters.
let him spoil u his love language is gift giving,
robotus/alpha beta
just snuggling up on the sofa, ordering takeout and watching friends.
he’d die <333
i can just imagine him melting into your touch like <33 he feels so fucking loved??

Emergency Car Trouble Commissions
Hey there! So… if you follow me, you might've noticed I mentioned my car being worked on. Well… it's gonna require some repairs, and they ain't cheap. As in, they're gonna cost close to $1000. I don't have a source of public transportation where I live, and I'm not within walking distance of anything.
I'm in… okay shape financially, but not great, and I can't afford to dump a huge sum of money into my car without a little back up.
I really hate asking for help, and I feel really uncomfortable, but… I also wanna be honest and transparent. Any help or support is appreciated, even if it's just some encouragement.
I've got a ko-fi page if commissions aren't your thing, or you're feeling really generous and wanna just donate instead. All funds will go into fixing my car rn. More details below the cut-off. This post is image-heavy!
All commissions are digital, created in Clip Studio Paint Pro.
Payment is accepted via PayPal in USD. I will need a working email to send an invoice to.
You may DM me here. If you have my Discord, you may also contact me there. Otherwise, send enquiries to [email protected]
I will get back to you as soon as I am able. Please allow up to 48 hours for me to respond. <3
Commissions generally have a turn-around of 1-2 weeks for sketches, but are handled on a case-by-case basis. More details are available on my Commission Sheet. If you have any questions or are confused by anything, please feel free to reach out to me.
Cost may be more if a character is more complex, or background is more complex / detailed. I reserve the right to deny a commission for any reason.
You will receive a preview sketch before the commission is finalized.
If you've seen something in my deviantART gallery, or on one of my other socials, and it's not listed here, feel free to ask me what cost would like for that item or style! I'm happy to work with you. <3

Here's some Ashe deep lore. CW sexism, misogyny, some trauma, depression and over-all a stressful time. Read at your own convenience.
I used to work in the gaming industry for an indie company. Watching some of you react to no Silksong news brings back some horrors.
To preface: The company that I worked for was a very small independent gaming company based out of the Netherlands -- so it was a remote position. We made a few different titles, none of which were wildly successful, in large because of major design flaws (examples include: story not mattering, too much emphasis on PVP in poorly balanced titles [and making the game COMPLETELY DEPENDENT on pvp in some cases] and most egregiously, no real direction beyond 'it should be fun.')
I was hired as a Community Manager initially. My responsibilities for this job largely involved managing the forums, doing news updates, sending out (Not writing) press releases, hanging out in the chats of our games / playing the games sometimes with players, and coming up with fun events. My colleague/boss was senior community manager, and she ran a very successful gaming blog (more successful than most of our games initially -- until she closed it). Both of us were/are heavily involved in games. I am more of an RPG and horror title enthusiast and she was a big fan of RPGs as well as FPS games. We both have a pretty wide repertoire of experience combined. She was a world's top 50 raider in World of Warcraft at the time of this all going down.
I should preface: I am AFAB. I, unfortunately for me, have a very feminine voice. At the time of this all happening, I was also still using she/her pronouns. So was my colleague.
During our experience as Community Managers, we were forced to do marketing despite neither of us knowing how to do that (examples include understanding metrics, learning how Google algorithms worked, composing and distributing Press Releases as well as finding the sites to send those TO).
Here's some examples of the awful things that she and I endured under this company:
80+ hour work weeks, where we were required to detail out with time sheets daily everything we did and what the reasons were. I think I clocked in 16 hour days most days and I was required to work weekends.
On Christmas, our boss called and screamed at my colleague because she and I dared to want the day off to spend with our families (we were not allowed any holidays).
My colleague was forced to work -from the hospital- while her mom underwent life-saving surgery, under threat of being fired.
"You look like a crayon eating [r slur]" is an actual phrase that was used to describe her because of a picture she was using of herself.
We both got told, numerous times, that "girls can't make strategy games."
We were blamed for them releasing an RTS/Tower Defense title the same day as Left4Dead despite my colleague telling them numerous times that that was a mistake.
I later got promoted to Project Manager, but I was still making over $1000 a month less than my male colleague who I hired. In order to get me a raise, he had to take a pay cut. I put in more hours than he did, by his own admission, and worked twice as hard. He was questioned far less on whether or not his work was "efficient."
There are more stories but in truth, I have blocked a lot of it out of my mind. She and I both ran screaming from the gaming industry and have nothing to do with it now in our professions for a reason.
The worst part of all of this is that this is not at all uncommon. This is unfortunately very typical of the industry -- there are good companies, but you hear about these horrors lot less often than they actually occur.
Why do I share this? Because when I see you all screaming about wanting Silksong news, I want you to remember what indie developers go through. And maybe have a little empathy. Good things take time.
(No, I am not saying this is happening at a little 3man studio. I am just telling you, as someone who has worked in the gaming industry, that you should try to be a little more understanding of how hard it can be for some of us.)

Creeping Toward September
Shhhh. The last three days we've woken up to temperatures hovering between 58-60 and I don't want to scare it away. I know it's still August, summer is still spreading her fiery breath around, and we're a solid month away from really pleasant weather, but this sneak peek is wonderful. Our daytime highs still soar to the 80's, but I'll take that cool morning kiss and dream about fall. I haven't posted in a week! We had the sweet grandgirl for three days and had a ball. We returned her Monday afternoon and then I took Tuesday off. I didn't lift a finger. Since then I've been cranking out earrings like my life depends on it. I still need to make cards and if I have time, do some of my altered art watches. I'm working on earrings first because they require more time. First I condition and blend the clay and decide what sort of pattern or look I want, then I roll and cut, and into the oven they go. Once they're baked I do a little sanding to smooth the edges, then they get an acrylic glaze and go into my little UV machine. When they're all pretty and glossy, I drill holes and put them together with jump rings and posts. None of it is hard, but it is a bit time consuming. I am building an inventory though, and that's the goal. My plan for Artisans on the Choptank is to have one display of autumn and Halloween earrings, one display of the local high school colors, and one display of just really FUN earrings - all colors and designs. I've made several pairs in the high school colors, and right now I'm in the thick of the autumn batch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm really digging the gray, gold, and white. I was actually just using up scraps when I made those, but I may make more.
Tumblr media
I won't be charging much because I know how imperfect these are. I'm not using high end findings, I'm still a bit clumsy with the whole process, and I'm simply not a perfectionist. If anything has to be exact, I'm not your gal. But for a few bucks, surely the ladies of Caroline County would like some fun earrings. I guess I'll find out. I'm planning to post this sign at my booth.
Tumblr media
I may also have a little sign with a "days until Christmas" countdown. It's closer than you think.
Tumblr media
So, that's what's keeping me busy. I'm happiest when I'm creating, so it's been a good week. I can't wait to complete the earring plan and get started on the cards. I've roughed out a couple of ideas.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Come on over to my booth and buy a gift for the fancy gal in your life and a card to go with it. One stop shopping! I have the Square thing for my phone so I can swipe a card, I have appropriate displays for my wares, and I'll have this banner on the front of my table.
Tumblr media
That's me! I think that since my first foray into the craft fair world is in September, I'll use an orange table cloth and maybe some mini pumpkins with that banner. Keep it simple, but noticeable.
Tumblr media
I'm trying not to over invest because this may be a flop. Or I might decide that I hate sitting at a booth all day. That banner was $7, my time is free (seriously, what else am I going to do?), and my supplies are mostly inexpensive. Clay is cheap. I don't want this to become a money pit of a hobby. Hopefully I can sell enough to pay for my spot at the event. Booth space for the day is $50 and it's only four hours! I think that's steep. Maybe I'm naïve.
Tumblr media
Aright, enough about that. You've probably fallen asleep while I yammered on about clay earrings. B-O-R-I-N-G. Sorry. Honestly, I can't share a zillion photos of the grandgirl (which is what I want to do) and there's not much else happening around here. The mister is still running far and wide doing his photo stuff. The last two evenings he was at Summerfest. That's Denton's BIG send-off to summer, celebrating harvest as well as sending the kids back to school. They don't start school until after Labor Day here (throwback to my childhood!). Anyway, at Summerfest there's a lot of good music, dancing, food, fireworks, a play area for kids with giant sides and bouncy houses, and so on. I probably should have gone, but I end up attending those sorts of things alone. That's no fun. I figured I'd stay home and use those hours to produce inventory (I was trying to avoid saying earrings again). Last year I tried to enjoy it, but I had horrible sciatica pain and I was still feeling puny from a double bout of covid. I did enjoy the music though!
Heyyyyy, speaking of pain...guess who is living practically pain-free these days? Ol' Grancy has found the perfect recipe for feeling whole again! First, movement. Walking for just 30 minutes every morning and being diligent about my stretches and some core work has made a huge difference. I'd like to get a treadmill and increase my waking time. I used to do 3.5 miles every morning and it set the tone for the rest of my day. That was before my ankle surgery. After the ankle surgery I tried so hard to maintain activity, water aerobics, Jazzercise, etc. I even had a routine before Jazzercise - ibuprofen one hour before class, after class I'd drive home with an ice wrap on my ankle and then elevate it. Stupid, huh? THEN WE MOVED. That move was when I hurt my back and the sciatica stuff started. If you want to know how much true sciatica issues hurt, brawny boxer Mike Tyson uses a wheel chair when his flairs up. So PT, stretches, and walking had reduced my pain by about half. I'm not bragging when I say that I endure pain well. That's just how I'm made. An ER nurse once called me "stoic". But that doesn't mean it's not exhausting. It takes a toll, it robs you of joy. It's no bueno. That's when someone I love and trust told me all about gummies. Let me start by saying I've never smoked pot in my life. I've never had a negative view of it, it just wasn't my thing. I've never been a drinker either, I don't care what anyone else drinks or smokes, it just wasn't for me. Do you, enjoy your life, none of my business. Maryland recently legalized marijuana, like so many other states, and people are becoming more educated about the plant, the products, and the benefits. What I knew could have fit in a teacup. I learned that medical marijuana is often used for chronic pain with great success and no side effects. I cringe at the thought of using prescription meds with a long list of possible and horrifying side effects. I was already living on a steady diet of Tylenol (not good) that only half worked. So when that dear person explained to me what she uses and how, I was intrigued. Fast forward to visiting a dispensary and telling the very helpful person at the counter, "I don't want to get high, but I'm old and I hurt." She said, "Gotcha." Because I am a lightweight with everything from alcohol to cold medicine, I tried one quarter of a gummie to start. One fourth of a CBD/THC gummie and I am a perfectly normal, not high, PAIN-FREE person! I am astounded. I knew that THC is used for people who are suffering with conditions from cancer to Lyme Disease, but I assumed that those patients were trading lucidity for relief. Maybe at higher doses they are, I don't know. Still, better than so many of the alternatives. So this plant, possibly put on Earth just for this purpose, criminalized and stigmatized (with the help of big pharma who wants your money), is the simplest solution of all. Of course, just like alcohol, there are people who abuse it. Alcohol, oxycontin, all sorts of legal things are abused. People are people. I'm just saying that 1/4 of a little gummie candy allows me to move through my day without pain and feel like myself again. No expensive, addictive drug with scary side effects - just a plant. Hallelujah. I may regret sharing that, because plenty of people will judge without researching. I'm okay with it. I know what I know. I'm not a drinker, a smoker, a pill taker, or a whiner. I'll just say that if your state has been smart enough to legalize it, and you have any sort of chronic pain, I'm happy to answer any of your questions about my experience. I'm still learning, but I can tell you that it's been a miracle for me. I'm dancing again! No foggy brain, just relief.
Tumblr media
If anyone had told young me that old me would be chewing up pot candy, I'd have called you a damn liar. Old me is wiser, thank goodness. Alright, it's past time for me to get some chores done. I've already cleaned the bathrooms but I definitely need to water a few things outside. A couple of days ago I tidied up the gardens and hacked down about half of the spent sunflowers (because I'm pain free!). I stuck the heads into a staked planter so the yellow finches can keep enjoying them.
Tumblr media
Once I finish outside I can get busy painting eyes on these ghosties and giving them some glitter.
Tumblr media
Can you tell I don't use my good baking sheets for making earrings? Some eyes, some glitter, and some posts and they'll be ready to go! I'm not going to do very many cutesy earrings - just these ghosts and some pumpkins. I don't want to get too stuck on holidays, I'd rather do seasons. Anywho, wishing you a wonderful Sunday. I hope that yours is as busy or as quiet as you like. Do something that delights you, whether that's a lazy afternoon in a hammock with a book or a deep clean of your space. Take care of yourself, body and soul. It's important. Sending out loads of love. Stay safe, stay well. XOXO, Nancy

hey babes
i made a gofundme! https://gofund.me/46c82a02
My wife and I are currently behind on rent & utilities, and my next paychecks are not going to be enough to keep our heads above water. I work 50 hours a week and we live incredibly frugally (no car, cheapest apartment in the city, depending on food banks and family for groceries). Rent is our biggest expense, and it pretty much cleans us out every month.
(See under the cut for more details and also a puppy pic 🐶💕)
All in all, our immediate needs run at a little under $1,500. The GoFundMe I'm linking is focused on her gender transition, so the starting goal is higher, but it does specify that funds raised there will go toward living expenses as well.
We're in the process of getting a new housing situation, but we have no idea what the timeframe for that is gonna be, and if we don't get caught up on rent this month we're basically screwed. The rent bill is currently $1318, and our internet bill is $180.
My wife is an incredible, intelligent, experienced, and extremely hard-working woman. She is also transgender. In the conservative culture of our state, that has made it impossible so far for her to get a job. Not only does this hurt our finances, but devastates her mental health, as she's a) already dealing with autism, PTSD, and bipolar disorder, and b) been raised to feel like monetary contribution determines her worth as a person and as a partner. Fortunately, there is a wonderful doctor in the area who can tend to her needs--though obviously not for free. Her next appointment is on Monday, and after insurance (employee-provided) it will cost about $80.
And, in the blessed event, that we end up with more than we need, everything left over will buy treats and toys for Bucky.

How to outsource blog writing in 5 easy steps
Tumblr media
So, you want to make a name for yourself as a blogger but don’t have the time for writing? Don’t worry, you aren’t the first person to pull their hair on this puzzle. Many people aspire to promote their brand via blogs but are too swamped with work to tap away at their computers. Entrepreneur’s life! However, there’s an easy way out. You can always outsource blog writing tasks to a competent writer and get your job done.
Here’s a bunch of content writing stats to grab your eyeballs:
The content marketing industry’s revenue is slated to touch $135 billion by 2026.
A major part of content marketing (70%) is based on written content alone – both long and short forms.
‘How to’ articles are the biggest sellers on the internet with an 80% reader share.
They also attract 1.5x more organic traffic. That’s your game if you want quick success in the blog writing world.
Publishing 2 to 6 times a week can increase your readership by 50%. So, you have to publish a lot – a lot!
You can double the appeal of your blog post by adding snappy imagery.
Phew! That’s a lot of work to be done to become a successful blogger. So, I’ll keep parroting, “Outsource blog posts!”
If you are still here, it means you are pretty darn serious about becoming a blogger. So, let me tell you the secret of how to outsource blog writing in 5 easy steps.
Come on! Put your reading glasses on and start reading!
1. What’s on Your Mind?
You can’t start your blog writing journey without deciding what you want to write on. Is there a particular subject or set of subjects that excites you? A good starting point is to leverage your knowledge of different subjects to home in on the topics you want to write on. Start by creating a list of 5 topics you want to begin your writing journey with.
2. Choose a Platform
First-time bloggers and writers often get confused about which platforms to write and promote their writeups on. You can choose free platforms like Medium and LinkedIn or ask to write Guest Posts for established online journals. The latter can seem futile at first because of the rejections coming from the editors of established e-zines. However, outsourcing blog posts can be helpful in this case.
When you hire content writers from remote staffing companies like Remote Resource TM or contract a freelance writer to do your bidding, they take care of guest posting woes. These are professional writers I am talking about, and they have enough contacts to get writeups published in your name in all the major journals. With some luck, you can have a ghostwriter promote your blogs on one of the major news outlets.
3. Decide on Your Hiring Budget
Compensation for content writing experts tends to vary depending on the region. An average American freelance writer will charge you $15 to $45 an hour or maybe even higher depending on their experience and vintage. But typically, Indian content writers charge much less than their Western counterparts. I know what you’re thinking! “Is an Indian content writer good enough for my rodeo blogs?” Well, throw them into any topic and they’ll come out sailing.
What people in the West tend to miss is that India was a British colony for a very long time and the most popular medium of education in the country still happens to be English. So, Indians know English. Period. If you are worried about their knowledge of American culture, you have grossly misjudged them. India has Netflix!
The best Indian content writers can be found working for remote staffing companies. When you hire SEO content experts from one of these companies, you get good blog writers as part of the deal. Besides, A1 companies like Remote Resource TM love to sweeten the deal with too-good-to-be-true hourly rates and no-strings-attached hiring contracts.
4. Build a Healthy Working Relationship
Unless you build a nice working relationship with your content writer or ghostwriter, you won’t be able to build your niche as a blogger. Talk to them a lot. Try to understand what they are thinking. Be a patient listener and help them out with writing challenges. If you are separated by geographical distance, use communication tools to stay in touch with your writer. But more than anything else, give them the space to use their imagination. It’s true that writers like to procrastinate. But which artist doesn’t?
5. To AI or Not To AI
Well well…time to address the elephant in the room! With AI companies flooding the market with writing tools and boastful claims, it’s easy to lose track of the original plan – to establish yourself as an entertaining and trustworthy blog writer. So far, no AI tool maker has been able to build an app that can think and write like a human.
“Thinking is a human feature. Will AI someday really think? That’s like asking if submarines swim. If you call it swimming then robots will think, yes.” That’s Noam Chomsky for you. There’s a growing consensus that AI-written content doesn’t rank as well as human-written stuff. And it takes an avid reader a split second to discover if a writeup is AI-written or human-written. Old-fashioned readers will hate you if they discover you are feeding them machine-written stuff. Gen Z is more forgiving. So, ‘to AI or not’ is for you to decide.
Summing it up
Writing is a beautiful art form. And it can bring you a pretty penny if you can establish yourself as a blogger. Doesn’t matter if you don’t have the time to grab a pencil and scribble on sheets of paper. Leave it to professional writers. Hire writers and content marketers from India!

Working in France
In this article, I examine how working conditions and their impact on French living compare to those of the United States.
While I have been a citizen of the U.S.A. for my entire life and have first-hand experience of the working conditions and work benefits, I have never lived in France. The knowledge used to make the comparisons here comes from quantitative reports and first-hand accounts.
Benefits and Pay
Compared to the U.S., workers in France have wonderful benefits. Full-time work weeks are usually 35 hours, of course varying by industry, and employees are assured about 25 days of paid vacation per year, not including holidays. When sick, an employee is guaranteed 50% of their daily pay for up to six months, as long as they have worked there for at least three.
The U.S. currently has no federal minimums for sick leave. However, the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) applies to many companies and public agencies, and mandates twelve weeks of unpaid leave “for certain medical situations”, if an employee has worked for at least twelve months 7.
On average, a U.S. worker has about 11 paid vacation days every year 4. Paid vacation leave is not a legal requirement.
Maternity leave in France is generally around 16 to 48 weeks of paid time off, while paternity leave is up to 28 days of paid leave 2. In the case of paternity leave, employers must pay for three days and social security pays for the rest. In the United States, only 13 states have mandatory amounts of paid parental leave. The time off ranges from 6 to 8 weeks 3. In both countries, the earnings during time off largely depend on what the employee was making during regular work hours.
French health insurance covers employees, retirees, the self-employed, and the unemployed 5. It generally covers 70%-80% of medical fees, or 100% if one has a major illness 6. Major illnesses include Parkinson’s disease, stroke, Crohn’s disease, cancers, diabetes, bipolar disorder, and serious anxiety disorders, as well as many other conditions. Many citizens have secondary insurance to help with what isn’t covered, which is generally around €14-30 per month.
Most health insurance in the United States is private and depends on the agreements negotiated between employers and insurance companies. On average, a U.S. citizen pays around $117 a month through employer health insurance, or about $477 per month if they cannot enroll through their employment 17.
One might qualify for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance plan depending on household size and income. For example, a single person making up to $1,677 each month would qualify for Medicaid and not have to pay a monthly premium or copays 8. Usually, one also has to have lived in the United States for at least five years to qualify, and applying and receiving Medicaid approval can take over six months and be very difficult to navigate 9.
It’s Not Perfect
While employees are more secure in France, they do still face some of the issues that American workers do.
The French minimum wage, as of 2023, is €11.27 before taxes. This is about €1,600 per month. The estimated average cost of living is about €1,027, not including rent 11. As of 2018, about 40% of people also had rent costs to pay 12. It is generally less expensive to live in France than in the United States, but many people there are also facing the housing crisis and inflated costs of basic living.
About 17% of France’s population makes minimum wage 15. This compares to about 1.4% of U.S. workers 16, but the minimum wage there is $7.25 compared to €11.27 in France (12.23 USD).
While the average monthly salary in France is around €2,340 (varying by region) 13, about 14.6% of the population lived in poverty in 2020 14.
Overall, the employee benefit requirements and federal policies of France reflect an investment in its people and a belief in basic rights. Compared to the United States, the government puts effort into taking care of its citizens. They are facing cost of living issues and have not increased the minimum wage to reflect that, but still beat the U.S. in wage minimum, health coverage, and paid time off.
If you have personal experiences relating to French employee benefits and wages, please feel free to add what information you can!

Eugenie lost 106 pounds
New Post has been published on https://eazydiet.net/eugenie-lost-106-pounds/
Eugenie lost 106 pounds
Transformation of the Day: Eugenie lost 106 pounds. #fitover60 She committed to a new healthier lifestyle, which included counting macros, working out with a trainer, and practicing meditation and visualization. Eugenie explained what she did with great detail, so don’t miss out on this story.
What was your motivation? I simply wanted to be healthy and avoid complications of diabetes that affected my mother: blindness, heart disease, and early death. I also wanted to finally have the body I always wanted but never seemed to succeed in achieving.
After retiring at age 63, I finally had time to invest in myself and decided to be the person I always envisioned and make my weight loss a post-retirement gift to myself.
How did you change your lifestyle? I adopted all the habits that I imagined a healthy, fit, secure woman would probably have; healthy eating, not over-stuffing myself, exercising regularly, manicures, pedicures, facials, girl’s day outings, and events that were more activity-based and did not revolve around food.
I remarried, and my husband decided to make my dream transformation his project as well. He ensured we had gardens with a variety of organic vegetables, kept rabbits and chickens for range-free eggs, and sources of chemical-free, lean meat. He also built me a home gym, and I hired a personal trainer who worked with me three to four days a week. I practiced yoga, started to meditate regularly, and practiced visualizing myself as I wanted to look. I documented my health journey on my FB feed for accountability.
I am a foodie. Therefore, I do not eliminate specific foods from my diet -except sugar and foods with added sugar. I do indulge in a cookie or a piece of cake every so often- but I no longer have a taste for it. I also take a multivitamin and other supplements.
My liquids are water, coffee, tea, wine (less than four ozs with my evening meal), and the occasional scotch and water when out. I love to bake bread, cook fancy meals, and enjoy good wines.
While trying to think like a thin person, I practice moderation in my eating habits. My before work out meal is usually a protein bar, fruit, and coffee (with cream and sugar substitute). A few hours later, I might have a few eggs with wasa crackers or some oatmeal, mixed nuts and fruit, OR one of my wonderful rolls and some peanut butter or cheese (sharp or cottage), coffee or tea, and another serving of fruit. I generally don’t eat again until supper, when I eat a small plate of whatever meal has been prepared (which will include some sort of carb, protein, and veggies). Or I will have an appetizer and a dinner salad with protein in it if I am out for dinner with a glass of wine.
I am not a desert person and generally have a plain expresso and a piece of dark chocolate after dinner. Before bed, I have a sugar-free Greek yogurt or a cup of tea, depending on how full I am after dinner. Sometimes I have nothing.
I monitor my macros and treat my calories like money. I aim for a minimum of 100 grams of protein, 50 grams of fiber, and no more than 80 grams of carbs daily. I try to eat at least two pieces of fruit daily, three or four portions of veggies daily, and a serving of complex carbs. I supplement with protein bars to get my full allotment of protein. I also have “blow-it” days when I eat whatever I want.
My calorie intake used to be 200 calories higher than my BMR to maintain a calorie deficit. It now is at whatever calorie requirement I need to maintain my current muscle mass, bone density, and fat levels for optimum health. So, if I blow my calorie intake on one meal, I am free to have salad, plain vegetables, and water for the rest of the day. Because I am a foodie and love to eat, I try to avoid eating something that will blow my calorie budget early in the day and have me eating like a rabbit for the remainder of the day.
What is your height? I am 5 feet, 6 inches in height.
What was your starting weight? What is your current weight? I do not weigh myself. I get body composition analysis done – initially monthly, but now every two to three months to ensure that I am on track. I currently have a BMI of 30, ranging between 190 and 193 pounds. At my heaviest weight, I was 296 pounds and fluctuated between 245 and 250 pounds just prior to my final weight loss commencing in 2019. 120 lbs of my current weight is muscle mass. My fat levels are 34%, my visceral fat is average at level 9. I am in a standard muscular body range – which is pretty good for a female aged 66. I am a controlled diabetic with an A1c of 5.6.
What do your workouts consist of? I do sets of heavy lifting combined with strength mobility for 45 minutes three days a week. I also do Hatha yoga for one hour per week. I take nature walks and hikes regularly. I also live only a few minutes from a beach and swim on a regular basis in the warmer months. Because we have gardens and animals, my days are active. We also do our own home maintenance, which can be a workout in itself.
I knew at age 66 that my body would not bounce back from massive weight loss, and I prepared myself for this eventuality. I invested in thread lifts and fillers to prevent the sunken-in look on my face. I worked with a top-notch surgeon and a first-class medical team to remove a hanging pannus. The surgery was not a walk in the park, but because I was fit, my recovery was rapid. I still have loose skin and flab on my legs and arms, but I am comfortable in my skin. I look at that bit of flab as my badge of honor for the massive amount of fat I lost in my health and fitness journey.
What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far? Every woman has her journey, and there is no one fix for weight loss. My success finally came when I stopped focusing on and hating measuring my worth by numbers on a scale, a Eurocentric body type, and BMI (that was normed on white males). I stopped depriving myself of foods I enjoy and not trusting myself to exercise good judgment. I started to embrace who I believed I was and live the lifestyle of a fit and healthy woman. I constantly told myself that I always was beautiful, am currently beautiful, and will continue to be beautiful for the duration of my current health journey and beyond, God willing. It did not happen overnight, but I evolved into the person I want to be, and this lifestyle is now my life.
What advice would you like to share with women who want to lose weight? If you see weight loss only as a goal (i.e., achieving a magic number on a scale or a dress size), you might find it difficult. Sustained weight loss is a transformative process requiring a change of mindset and lifestyle. If you focus on developing a lifestyle of health and fitness and on the small wins, the process tends to be more manageable as each day brings another non-scale victory on your way to success.

healthcare career that's not my own
For this week, I will be talking about the field of surgery. Surgery is a career that requires great attentiveness, hand stability, patience, and decisiveness. To begin with education, all surgeons earn a Bachelor’s Degree from completing 4 years of undergraduate education, a Doctor of Medicine Degree from completing 4 years of medical school, and complete an additional three to ten years of surgical residency and fellowship at a hospital. Beyond this, they have to complete extracurriculars and requirements which include, but are not limited to, volunteering/clinical hours, internships, and the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). Within the field of surgery, there are various specialties. These include general, thoracic, OB/GYN, neurological, pediatric, and many more. When a doctor decides upon a specialty, it gets very competitive. Depending on the specialty, a surgeon may work more or less. For the life of a surgeon, they are extremely busy, tired, and work unprecedented hours. For example, the average number of hours a general surgeon works is 50-60, while the average for a trauma surgeon is 60-80. Surgeons have a very spontaneous work schedule, especially when they are on call. This makes it more difficult to have a good work-life balance; however, it’s not impossible. In terms of operations, there is a great range for how long a procedure done by a surgeon will take. This can be as little as around 2 hours to as long as 10 hours. Technically, procedures can take longer as there is no legal time limit for procedures to take place.

Don’t Give Up On your Dreams, Its Apart of You!!
Everybody has a childhood dream and many of us still have that same dream. Unfortunately, many of us don’t ever get to fully realize our aspirations and are forced to get mundane jobs that aren’t fulfilling. This realization can be soul crushing and can lead to people to lose all interest in their passions. I can remember many times that people have said “Oh, I used to play the drums, but I don’t anymore” or whatever their passion was. They speak about it, like it’s a lost part of themselves that cannot be recovered due to the depends of society. It’s hard to blame them, responsibilities to our families and jobs can be overwhelming at times. However, I believe it’s extremely important to fight for your dreams and passions, and to not let society strip away your identity.
Tumblr media
Jeff Ditaranto is a prime example of somebody who hasn’t lost his passion for what he loves and refuses to let society dictate his life. Jeff is a musician who mainly does vocals but can also play the drums. Like most kids growing up he wanted to play in front of an audience filled with adoring fans screaming his name. Musicians such as Billy Joel, Queen and Tears for Fears all had a massive influence in shaping his artistic vision and love for music.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately, Jeff didn’t make it big and wasn’t able to become world famous with millions of fans. He now works at a Pizzeria called Giddy’s, as the head pizza maker, which is the same Pizzeria I work at. He’s very skilled at what he does and makes good money doing it, but it isn’t the same as performing in front of an audience. I asked him “how has this affected your passion for music and performing, like was it discouraging that you didn’t make it big?” He said it was disappointing, and it was hard to comprehend that my dreams might not come true, but my passion has never wavered. After getting to interview Jeff, it’s crystal clear that his passion is still strong as ever and nothing will get in his way of hitting the stage.
youtube
However, hitting the stage isn’t always easy for Jeff since the food industry is extremely demanding in terms of hours and fatigue levels. As a head pizza maker your expected to work at least 50-60 hours a week, Sunday through Friday, and Saturday nights (depending on the time of the year). He also has a family that depends on him as a father and breadwinner, which puts even more on his plate. But when you love something you find the time to do it, no matter what.
Before I ended the interview, I wanted to know what aspects of performing did he like and what kept him going throughout the years. The answer he gave me was pretty simple, I just love it, I love singing and performing with my band. I love the audience and interaction I get to have with them. Jeff has performed all over the place, but you can usually find him singing at different bars and taverns around New Jersey. If you like great covers of your favorite 80’s band go check out Jeff and his band Back in Time.

Screentendo Transforms your Computer's Screen into a Playable Mario Game
Screentendo may be the answer when you're bored at work and want to put off your work.
The app lets you turn any website into a playable version of iconic 80s Nintendo classic Mario Bros.
The creator of the site has provided step-by-step instructions to convert the pages into blocks. However it requires some programming expertise.
Scroll down to watch the video
Super Mario code has been developed by a London-based developer. It's called Screentendo It makes use of a window to change a website into 'blocks'. Mario can then be controlled on the stage, similar to the game. It will require some programming to make this feature function. Screentendo created the MailOnline logo.
Screentendo was designed by Aaron Randall, a London-based developer.
By dragging a window over a web page, various elements can be transformed into blocks from the Super Mario games.
Avengers fans, get together! Limited edition Iron Man Galaxy S6... The silent missile that could destroy electronics of enemies... Beware of the TEXT message that can crash your phone: malicious... Wake up and smell the coffee: Alarm clock emits aromas...
Mario himself appears in the form of a Mario, allowing players to move around the level and smash the blocks.
ANGRY BIRDS to BATTLE MARIO IN AN ACT OF BATTLE TO be admitted to the Hall of Fame
15 video games that have entertained gamers for untold hours have been selected as finalists for the new World Video Game Hall of Fame.
The list includes arcade pioneers Pong and Space Invaders, smartphone favourites Angry Birds and Minecraft and an array of others for consoles and computers. HULIYPIN
They are: Doom, FIFA soccer The Legend of Zelda, the Oregon Trail, Pac-Man, Pokemon the Sims, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Bros, Tetris and World of Warcraft.
In order to use it, you'll have be able to do a decent job changing source code, and using the program CocoaPods.
He explained that Screentendo is transparent windows that can be moved and adjusted to accommodate other applications.
"After placing the Screentendo Window on an area of the screen and then clicking inside it, the application will render an appropriate level dependent on the content below it."
Mr Randall told MailOnline that he created the app in just a few days'.
He said that the most difficult part of the application was the image processing. This required making the app know how to process any type of image and the structure that underlies it to create a level.
He said it can work on any website, however it performs best on pages that have 'distinct contrast'.
Screentendo is based on the early Super Mario Bros game, the screenshot below. Screentendo is currently only available for Macs. The code can be downloaded from GitHub. Mr Randall says the app is very much an experimental hack currently, and has a few shortcomings
Randall claimed that he built it because of his love for building things particularly smaller projects like this.
He added, "It's an excuse to learn new languages or frameworks, and to attempt to solve interesting problems that you don't normally have the opportunity to tackle."
"The idea came out of a conversation with a colleague. He spends a lot of his time watching graphs that monitor our servers. I joked that I'd build an application that overlays the graphs in order to make them more interesting.
MailOnline was told by Mr. Randall that he developed the program in just several days. He claimed that the most challenging part of the software was image processing. It was about making the program be able to recognize any kind of image and the structure that it is based on to to generate an appropriate level.
'A few weeks later we had a hackday in my office (where everyone is working on whatever they want) and I came up with something together that would later become Screentendo.'
He has stated on his website that the application is a proof of concept hack but still has some flaws.
And he also said that the phyiscs were still a little off and he had just set out to create something that would work 'well enough'.

This is one of the weekends that I worked harder on my day off and I did during my working week.
Tumblr media
In the past 3 or 4 years I have become so weak and so frail that doing regular things like carrying groceries from the car to my house, changing the cat litter, and making my bed absolutely wreck me.
Tumblr media
If I am this week and this physically drained from small activities in my early 50s, I honestly cannot imagine what the rest of my life is going to be like.
Tumblr media
Now granted, I never expected to live past my 20s so I had no idea what my fifties would be like because I never thought of them at all. I never abused my body in any way. I drank very little before I became straight edge and even before that, I have never done any drugs.
I've only had sex with one man in my entire life. Not that that is good or bad but the wear and tear on my body has been minimal up until the time that my body started to give out and I started to have surgery after surgery after surgery.
I need a corneal transplant and I started reading up on it the other night. It might actually be doable at some point in the future because it is not that expensive and there is a 90% success rate.
However, I've had about 15 other surgeries on my eyes so that would complicate things.
Even if the success rate is high, I'm not sure I even want to put my body through another operation.
I can almost track the total downfall of my body. Seven or so years ago I took a fall from a height of about 6 ft when I was living in Corpus. I had no money and no insurance and could not afford to see a doctor or chiropractor.
3 years after that, at my first teaching job in Big Spring, which was much more like being a guard at a prison, I attempted to break up a fight between two fourth grade boys.
I saw two boys running at a smaller boy and my first instinct was to step in between them thinking the boys were going to stop. They didn't and they ran me down literally knocking me completely backwards on my back in the middle of a hallway.
Tumblr media
2 months after that I contracted pneumonia and continued to work for about 3 weeks until I physically collapsed and ended up in the hospital. I was told it would take about 3 months to recover but honestly it took about a year.
That's when I started to walk with a cane because I was so weak I could not get around any other way. Butonce I started walking with that cane I just became dependant on it .
Two years after that I had an asthma attack so bad that I lost consciousness and had to be intubated. I was Halo flighted two towns over was in the hospital for a week.
Then I had two glaucoma operations, one of which coincided with me contracting kidney stones that kept me out of work a week or so. I was basically told then that I had to come back to work or else. I came back to work without being fully healed
And here I am now, doddering around like an 80-year-old.
I can barely walk,I can't run, I can't really exercise other than using a low set bike. I can't walk without a cane and after an 11 hour day of being on my feet and not being able to sit down as much as I need to, by the end of some days I cannot walk at all.
Time, time, time...
See what's become of me....
