peach oh my LAWD phanta 3 was so good 🥺. Would you consider explaining the title a little more? i read the para at the end with it and i kind of got it, but i wanted to pick your brain a little too!

First, thank you!! Second, I love this question bc honestly, the Phanta brain rot is still real. More below the cut since I went off lol.

Almost everything in Phantasmagoria is, well, a phantasmagoria — an exhibition of optical effects and illusions; a constantly shifting complex succession of things seen or imagined.

Nearly every part of the story — character interactions, perspectives, plot points — is distorted in some way, whether it be by Wisteria/alcohol, grief, or just individual stubbornness.

The Wisteria is probably the most obvious example, as it literally distorts Reader’s perceptions of both herself, her environment, and her interactions with others

I was particular with not describing the Reader physically (even beyond her clothing) past that initial scene in Part I when she goes to the Kizuki for the first time with Mitsuri. When she does describe herself, she speaks of herself as a “raving princess” and “effervescent” — but nothing truly descriptive.

Why does it matter? Contrast that with the comments Sanemi makes about how he “wouldn’t have known it was her” (which later we find out is literally true); he also tells her, point blank, she looks gaunt, and she has no reaction whatsoever — not even an internal reaction. That’s the wisteria distorting her self-image, until she finally looks in the mirror at the end of Part II and fully sees herself for the first time in a while — and realizes what it has done.

But the Wisteria distorts other things too, namely, the appeal of the club/rave life that Reader throws herself into. At first, she calls it a paradise — it’s her escape from both her heartache and from herself in general. The club then distorts her perception of others — namely, Sanemi, like when she describes him as “menacing” under the club lights, and yet the flashback that immediately follows is one of the saddest in the series — and it shows that Sanemi is hurting just as much as she is. But the wisteria distorts everything around her, so she’s only seeing what she wants to see. Yet, when the illusion starts to crack, what happens? She panics — she describes the Kizuki as too loud, too claustrophobic; the Wisteria quite literally leaves a bitter taste in her mouth.

The other major example of a phantasmagoria in the story is its main theme — grief. Anyone who has been up close and personal with grief can probably attest to the way it quite literally changes how you view everything — even if that means it narrows your perception (I.e. distorts it). Both Reader and Sanemi are grieving significant losses, and those losses make them blind to the other’s suffering in return. It’s not so much miscommunication as it is two kids who were forced to bear the weight of the world way too fast.

That grief then continues to distort their reality, but not in the sense that they’re misremembering events. Everything they say happened, actually happened. Y/N was abandoned by Kyojuro and Sanemi; but she distanced herself from them first, and she also abandoned Sanemi when he needed her. Neither of the boys were there for her while her mother was sick and when she died; but they didn’t know until it was too late. Sanemi did return her feelings 100% at the train station; but he was so overwhelmed and reeling from Genya’s death that he reacted poorly. Sanemi did see Y/N that day at the crosswalk; he just didn’t recognize her. Y/N was isolated after her mother died, but Sanemi was desperately trying to find her the whole time.

Thus, everything happened exactly the way both Y/N and Sanemi said it did, but their grief prohibited them from stepping back and seeing the broader picture — so their interpretation, though objectively true, is still distorted. This translates into other things as well, such as Y/N constantly misinterpreting Sanemi’s motives and efforts to make things right between them, because otherwise, it wouldn’t square with the understanding she has of what happened and why. She thinks he’s using her for convenience; he’s actually letting her use him in any way she wants just so he can have a chance to take care of her. She accuses him of being possessive because he feels entitled to her affection, but he actually loves her (deeply), and is terrified of losing her, because she is quite literally wasting away in front of him. She says he doesn’t care about her, yet she won’t let him. He tries to talk to her about everything right after they start hooking up, yet she refuses to engage. She runs away. She’s cold, and she shuts him down harshly even when he tries to offer her bare minimum affection and care (this also is supposed to contrast with what we know as the Reader, which is that she is still very much in love with him). We also find out that Sanemi spent every other weekend taking flowers to her mother’s grave — again, shattering that illusion she’s created in her mind that he doesn’t care about her.

It’s not until they finally hash everything out in the kitchen at Tengen’s that both realize they’ve been focusing on one narrow part of a much larger picture, and that they’ve both let their grief blind themselves to one another. When Y/N finally steps back and looks at the whole instead of the part, the illusion shatters. Love is the final phantasmagoria. Y/N realizes that she’s mistakenly believed she was running away from love (and thus, Sanemi) only to realize that not only has she been running in circles, but Sanemi has been running opposite of her the whole time. They’re two sides of the same coin; they were bound to crash into one another at some point.

This is just like, a bird’s eye overview of the mind map that I drew out in my journal for Phanta, and I’m sure I’m leaving something out. If y’all have any thoughts, I’m always happy to hear them (seriously).

How would the rest of the story play out if Mitsuri was actually filling in for Kyojurou during the Infinity Train arc?

In reference to this joke of a post, most excellently transformed into art here (thank you, it's amazing and I still love it)!

Of course, it was only meant to be a joke because it fixes only one problem of that night; that Akaza won't stay and fight if it means crossing hands with a girl. It leaps with Love Breath flamboyance over the whole issue of the train crashing after having turned into a demon and the whole getting crushed inside one's dreams thing. Mitsuri might have the love-for-all-people power to save over 200 passengers and deal major internal damage to Enmu, albeit with potentially less clear instructions to her juniors and needing a moment to calm and realize there's got to be a head somewhere to cut off. However, if you let Mitsuri accomplish her dreams inside her dreams, I hate to say it, but everyone might be done for. She fights with her gut and her guts loves and trusts people. Even if she has an inkling that something is off, she's got a history of denying herself her own feelings and the "oh, danger!" push might come too late.

But this is a Fix-It AU, we're fixing it with Nezuko befriending Mitsuri before the tickets get punched (despite the stares of other passengers), and when Nezuko's playmates fell asleep, she didn't like the menacing looks of the people coming in with ropes, so she burned the ropes (and inadvertently, the tickets) and starting trying to wake up Tanjiro and Mitsuri right away. That probably makes Enmu confused as hell about whats going on, so maybe he and Nezuko duke it out a bit before the others finally wake up, and he hasn't made much progress on oneness with the train, so Mitsuri offs him before he ever got to do much.

Maybe Akaza shows up. Maybe he leaves before they notice him. Maybe he shows up while Enmu is in peril and he gives the train a punch to tell Enmu to shape up in there and not embarrass Muzan, resulting in Mitsuri saving 200 passengers anyway.

Since Mitsuri witnesses Nezuko fight and protect the passengers, she sings Nezuko's praises far and wide, contributing to the others accepting her better (however begrudingly), especially Rengoku, whom she reintroduces Tanjiro to, so he can inquire about Hinokami Kagura. Tanjiro becomes Rengoku's Tsuguko. This AU continues to fix everything! Senjuro still has a bit of a toothache, though, sacrifices had to be made. At some point Tanjiro will headbutt Shinjuro anyway and Rengoku stepping in to defend his Tsuguko leads to a change of heart and positive character development for Shinjuro after all. Senjuro's really gonna need that tooth pulled with how well this is going.

Mitsuri stops by the Butterfly Mansion more to visit Nezuko, so this means more on-screen interactions between Mitsuri and Shinobu. Did I say 'more'? I meant 'finally some.'

Not having had the extreme failure to drive them, maybe the Kamaboko boys wouldn't had worked as hard on training the four months before... nah, Rengoku training them all, they'll be fine in Yoshiwara. They still generally reside at the Butterfly Mansion because Shinobu accepted official responsibility for Tanjiro and Nezuko.

Iguro hates how much Mitsuri talks about the Kamados. Tanjiro gets death threats from both Haganezuka and a mystery hater with nice handwriting.

Fighting Hantengu goes smoother because Tanjiro and Mitsuri are already familiar enough with each other that they fight well together. And since he's alive and well, Rengoku is there too! Maybe even fighting alongside Muichiro and being the first to warmly congratulate him on having his memories back. Oh my heart, I want this. Also, after meeting Genya, Rengoku keeps making conversation about him to Sanemi, who can't manage to pull the "I have no brother" line when Rengoku is so aware of the truth. This leads to some kind of socially award situation in which the Shinazugawa brothers have to get along.

And... and 'cause this is a fix-it AU Akaza is no match for Rengoku and Giyuu combined, and... and somehow or another Rengoku saves 200 Demon Slayers in the Mugen-jo. Is that too much to ask of this AU?? Argh... probably. This is where I leave the rest up to your imaginations. Keep pulling Senjuro's teeth if you must.

Have you read Tanjiro's Status chapter? (takes place Post-story)

HNGGGGGGG!

I want to write a 50 page essay regarding the bonus chapter of KnY because I have a lot of mixed feelings about it (mostly anger and disbelief) and kinda lowkey disappointed how the bonus chapter turns out. I thought the timeskip/next generation ending chapter was super bad but no! The bonus chapter actually surpasses it; which shocked me! I wish it didn't even exist.

But I'll just do a super short comment regarding the bonus chapter to avoid scaring people away. Lol!

First of all, the bonus chapter did everyone dirty! Especially the main characters! Like seriously? Gotoge-sensei, do you hate your main characters so much?! The main characters don't have any future life plans at all after demon slaying except Zenitsu (which we all know right from his first introduction that he wants to get married and live a normal life). I mean, I can understand that it's hard to think of something up for Inosuke but for Tanjiro to not have any future plans at all after demon slaying? Your main hero? Seriously?! Also, the poor boy mentioned that he can't sell coals anymore in the long run because people are switching to electricity and ... that's it. We were left hanging on what happens to Tanjiro's future after that. Yes, he will later on marry Kanao but even then, we only know this fact because it was mentioned by Gotoge-sensei outside of the official comic! Also don't get me started on Tanjiro and Kanao pairing. It is so out of the left field (It's like Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley pairing all over again but even more random!). Tbh I think Tanjiro should've married Mitsuri or maybe even Shinobu instead of Kanao because they have more chemistry and character interaction (at least in the anime). Gotoge-sensei could've made Tanjiro/Kanao work by showing how they fall in love after their demon slaying days ended, but nope! It's just one page (if I'm not mistaken) of Tanjiro visiting Kanao for medical check up in the Bonus Chapter. How are the readers suppose to pick up on the fact that they're in love and will live happily ever after just based on that one page?! Both Tanjiro and Kanao deserves a better love story.

Moving on to Nezuko. My poor dear Nezuko. Even when she's turned into a human with free will once again... she has no character growth. She's just nice. That's it. Just a nice girl. A nice and hard working girl. She's so nice everyone! And helps her brother and her friends around the house. Wow, amazing! Gotoge-sensei should've written the Bonus Chapter based on Nezuko's perspective instead. Write about how she felt when she was a demon all those long years and the anger/sadness/trauma it caused her. Or if you want to go for a more positive story, write on how she overcame her trauma with the help of her brother and friends. Alas! Nezuko ends up being just The Typical Nice Shounen Girl Character in the end.

Next, Inosuke. First of all, I just want to mention that when I was first introduced to this character in the anime; I immediately thought that he has the best and interesting character design and personality. Sadly, he ends up being the most boring character out of the main three because Gotoge-sensei really doesn't know where to go with Inosuke. He's just a loud wild child and... that's it really. In the Bonus Chapter, he remains relatively unchanged even after all the tragedy he went through. I mean it's not a bad thing to remain the same person but personally, I think Gotoge-sensei could've pushed the character to become more than just a loud wild child. What a waste of good character design. Also, I think Inosuke and Nezuko should've been the end game. Yes! I went there.

Lastly, my beloved Zenitsu. (Warning! I will be super biased here because I love my Zenitsu ok?) You would think that I should be really happy and pleased that the Bonus Chapter story actually revolves more around him. But no, I am actually angry that the Bonus Chapter focuses on him at the expense of destroying his previous character growth. WTF GOTOGE-SENSEI WHY YOU DO THIS?! I'm mad that he reverted back to his old personality after all the hardship, hardwork and trauma he went through. I mean sure, Zenitsu was suppose to be the comedic relief character (aside from Inosuke) but I think he no longer matches that role in the end; especially not after experiencing a life changing tragedy. Plus, wasn't it his goal to be a better person than before? Shouldn't that be Zenitsu's happy ending (besides marrying Nezuko)? Nope! Gotoge-sensei basically whacked Zenitsu back to the starting point in the Bonus Chapter. Come on man! The dude just killed his step brother and lost his grandpa; pretty sure a person would definitely grew leaps and bounds in terms of maturity after that (or breakdown...). But nope, Zenitsu is just a silly crybaby again. Back to square one. I tried to rationalize that perhaps due to all the trauma and tragedy he faced, he reverted back to his old lazy and crybaby personality but then, that would make Tanjiro look bad because in the Bonus Chapter Tanjiro was (in my opinion) very harsh on Zenitsu. He basically confronts Zenitsu; telling him he needs to grow up and start acting like a man if he wants to get married. To stop whining about the leg pains he still feels and to stop writing nonsense stories. Remember, the Bonus Chapter happens a few months after they defeated Muzan. Zenitsu has just experienced the craziest shit ever (i.e. killed his step brother, lost his beloved grandpa, watched his comrades die, watched his best friend Tanjiro died and later turned into a demon and witnessed his future wife Nezuko being hurt by his turned demon best friend). I don't think Zenitsu even had the time to process and heal from all the traumas he went through and here comes stoic Tanjiro; basically just flat out telling him to grow up and stop being useless which is so out of character of him. Yes, Tanjiro can be blunt sometimes but he's not cruel. I dunno, maybe Tanjiro is also not over his horrible traumas and is lashing out on Zenitsu but then again this would also be out of character. So yeah, it's bad writing all around. Yishhhh...

Also, I think Zenitsu should've end up with Kanao. Yes, I went there too! Lol!

Ok, I'm definitely gonna stop here. I could go on and on but... it's almost 2.00 am and I have work tomorrow. Lol! ;w;

Actually, I have another interpretation on why Tanjiro is super harsh towards Zenitsu in the Bonus Chapter but it has a more Tanjiro x Zenitsu flavour to it. More like, a conspiracy theory that actually Gotoge-sensei wanted Tanjiro x Zenitsu to be the end game but can't because of shounen anime reasons. If you guys want to hear my crazy theory just lemme know. Hehehehehehe hahahahaha!

Explaining my personal take on wether or not the Shinobu and Giyuu ship is canon since I’ve seen a lot of false information being spread on platforms like Tiktok, YouTube and Instagram. (KNY SPOILERS AHEAD

Now I’m just going to cover some of the points being spread by the shippers.

First is “Gotouge said they would’ve gotten married if Shinobu didn’t die!” but I’ve searched around for the source of this claim and asked users who’ve been tossing this around and the only response I could get is “I don’t know I just heard they did”. If someone is able to provide a source then I’ll drop this immediately but nobody can so I’m chalking it up to just a rumour.

Second is “Gyomei said they liked each other in the databooks just like with Mitsuri and Obanai!” but theres a distinct difference in the way he addresses the way Shinobu and Giyuu interact and how Obanai and Mitsuri interact (+ how Sanemi feels about Kanae).

The words used for characters that undoubtedly had romantic feelings for the other character are words like “seems like like-“ “or seems to be in love with-“ but the claim for Shinobu and Giyuu is just a general connection like chatting with a friend, nothing that specifically implies the two are romantically involved. So no this doesn’t prove that they’re together and the ship is on the same level of canon as Obamitsu.

The third claim isn’t really a claim since I’m assuming a lot of them bringing up the Giyuu side story haven’t even actually read it, since another piece false information is that Yae is Giyuus canon wife. Now yes it is canon Giyuu had children with a woman he was close with as he has a descendant in the flash forward

But there’s no offical source on Yae being that woman. But going back to Shinogiyuu there’s no explicitly romantic interactions in the side story that make it canon, it seems more like Shinobu and Giyuu were paired up in the same way Rengoku and Mitsuri were, giving all four characters time to shine.

Now this claim is the one that’s most widely spread around that people believe cements this ship as canon and, you guessed it, “the moon is beautiful”. I really don’t blame anyone for this one because this became such a widespread phenomenon once the episode aired and everyone was ready for a good romance but that line doesn’t come from the manga (if it does and I somehow missed it that would be INCREDIBLY EMBARRASSING for me so please tell me the chapter if it actually does happen in the manga-), the only other instance I could find of her saying something close to that is her saying “isn’t the moon pretty” to the spider sister which isn’t the same thing. The line being anime only makes sense, since I thought it was confusing that a line that apparently meant something as important as a love confession never got any follow up or response in the story or from the author. I don’t believe Ufotable themselves were trying to make this scene appear as if it was a love confession and was instead trying to show Shinobu attempting to get along with Giyuu after a very clear shot of the moon amongst the trees, no response from Giyuu and her next line being “since we’ve been given this joint mission, let’s try to get along”. So no, I don’t believe this specific scene was meant to be interpreted as a love confession despite the phrase also being able to carry that meaning.

So yes, I believe that the relationship between these two in canon is not written to be a romantic relationship even though there’s absolutely no problem with interpreting it that way and engaging in fan material, just wanted to share my thoughts about the subject since I’ve seen it debated lately.

Rengoku x Uzui (like a Lot this is probably my otp of this show. however uzui’s wives are included. its like a separate spoke poly to me? uzui x his wives are one half and the wives are all into each other then uzui x rengoku is the other half and rengoku and uzui’s wives all care about each other in a more platonic way lol. basically a healthy poly thing in my mind)

Tanjiro & Zenitsu & Inosuke (in a platonic way!!! those are my sons don’t separate them or i’ll sob!!!!!!)

Giyuu x Shinobu (i like how she teases him and even if she is disdained by his awkwardness sometimes i think she can really understand where he’s coming from and understand him even when he’s just kinda like :| yknow)

Rengoku x Akaza -> i hate akaza so fucking much i am strangling every post i see with him and this ship with my bare hands. I Do Not Care about akaza’s boohoo sad backstory i am killing him and not in the teehee way i mean every time i see him i become Enraged <3. muzan may be the antagonist of demon slayer but i want to see akaza’s death animated in Great Detail.

haven’t seen anything about uzui that’s made me squick cuz most people ship him with either his wives or with rengoku lmao

Tanjiro x Kanao -> even though they are canon i’m just not super into her character ig? like she and tanjiro don’t seem like couple material to me. he doesn’t really treat her any differently than any other person he interacts with (imo) and i would argue he shows more care and interest and love towards zenitsu and inosuke than kanao specifically. aside from the standard anime “girl pretty” energy which like. all anime does that so it’s not even a measure of attraction to me anymore (being a long time anime fan). don’t get me wrong i don’t hate her as a character but as a couple they just seem so… boring. esp of the main three canon couples. like inosuke and aoi i can see and i don’t mind, zenitsu and nezuko are a given but… kanao just isn’t a good match for my boy ig (to me) 💀💀

Zenitsu and Inosuke only really get shipped with Nezuko/Tanjiro (solo) respectively and i don’t dislike those. i just like the three of them together at all costs so ig i don’t like the idea of tanjiro and inosuke dating and zenitsu kinda being on the side if i HAD to be nitpicky about it. like the three of them are a unit. do not separate.

Giyuu x Sanemi -> sorry i just don’t like sanemi 💀💀💀

Shinobu x Mitsuri -> i LOVE mitsuri to death. but i hate when fandoms ship two femme characters just because they could be a lesbian couple and for no other reason aside from that. like i get Why because lesbian candidates in anime is fleeting esp in shonen bc of a lack of femme characters in general so like. i understand that but maybe just cuz im not a lesbian idc that much. it’s similar to how i feel about tanjiro/kanao i just don’t think mitsuri has put any special emphasis on her relationship with shinobu. like she looks up to her definitely. but like mitsuri loves everyone. and i feel like shinobu would do better with someone she wouldn’t feel pressured to be Only the happy side of herself with and i feel like once she broke down that barrier she would be able to be more herself around giyuu than around mitsuri.

also this isn’t mentioned in my main ships but i don’t like Mitsuri and Obanai as a couple. idc if they’re canon i don’t like him he’s annoying asf he is not good enough for my girl.

Rengoku x Giyuu i’ve seen around and i’m okay with it. i love both of these two to death (#tanjiro’solderbrothers) and so them together makes me very soft. i think it would be super rough for giyuu just because i don’t think he’d think he was Good Enough for rengoku which is why i don’t ship it too heavily but like i love them both so i’m never mad when i see it.

Giyuu x Sabito i don’t really ship but like obviously i get why people do and it makes my heart hurt despite not shipping it like that </3

Tanjiro x Genya or Tanjiro x Muichiro are two things i don’t mind seeing. i don’t really ship them bc like. tanjiro is my son and it’s kinda weird for me to think about him romantically l m a o? and muichiro is even younger than him lol. in the case of genya i totally get it but again it’s more just “hmm yes that’s his best friend” like i immediately in my mind view it platonically vs romantically.

random sabito things.

some people are really into cute people/things ( konpeito ); others are into sexy ( mpenda ) or awkward ( ruka ), scary/weird ( senjuro ). not sabito. sabito’s favorite type of thing/person is ridiculous. he does not totally Get this, so rest assured he’s just as confused about it as you are.

on that note: his favorite animal is the duck. because look at that thing. it’s made for water, land, and air, but isn’t particularly graceful or well suited for either. it makes a stupid sound when it talks and an even stupider sound when it walks. he’s quietly obsessed. he knows a concerning amount about them and can identify most species in under 5 seconds.

masculinity and strength are very important to him. he was raised in an environment that valued these two attributes above all else, and to question a man’s masculinity or strength was to question his identity, his worthiness, and his general value in society. he is very comfortable in his masculinity, but when he’s younger it is still a trigger point for him. he will not rise to most barbed insult aimed at his masculinity, but some can get under his skin, and he will feel forced to defend his honor in some way, shape, or form.

sabito has an incredibly neglected inner child. he grew up never feeling like he was allowed to be soft or have soft things, or to feel like a child. his childhood was nonexistent, and he doesn’t realize that isn’t the norm until he meets people who had toys as children. as a result, he subconsciously practices several self disciplining techniques to berate and contain his inner child. he also has several self soothing techniques, namely sleeping with two secret small stuffed animals. however, doing so causes him great shame, so whatever relief he gets from this is quickly undone.

because he respects strong people, including some strong women, sabito does not think he’s sexist, but he is. believing women to be inherently ( “biologically” ) weaker is a mindset he was raised with, and like most -isms, this thinking is incredibly insidious and difficult to completely remove from one’s thinking. like many people in the 1920s and even today, his way of thinking is not uncommon. the first person to explicitly challenge this is @kyousei’s kyojuro, who introduces the co-water hashira to mitsuri, who challenges just about every conception sabito has about men vs women, and femininity vs masculinity. this is an ongoing character flaw of his, and one that, hopefully, will be completely unlearned by him some day. i will not be speedrunning that arc with him, so when interacting him please keep in mind that it may come up in his inner thoughts and some dialogue.

his libido is average. however his incredible self discipline means sex is something he rarely engages in and does not spend much time thinking about at all.

he is a good teacher to his tsugoku, but by god is he fucking tough. he’s not as bad as sanemi, but training with him is no laughing matter. but once you’ve passed the training of the day, he softens and becomes warmer and more encouraging in his older brother fashion.

under that duty-bound persona and cold fox mask ( which he continues wearing, in honor of his tutelage ) is a surprisingly charming and boyish smile.

he has incredibly sensitive ears. for the longest time he cannot fucking stand being anywhere near kyojuro or ANYONE loud. however he eventually learns sign language so he can converse with kyojuro without wanting to commit a felony.

sabito is 100% mentally a manly-man type of guy. not in the typical way: he isn’t high fiving all the time or whatever. he just values strength and works hard to maintain his, and he maybe focuses on physiques a little too often. however, sometimes he mentally goes so Dudebro that it gets a little gay. he is homiesexual, if you will.

he does not get along with obanai. foxes eat snakes, and all of that. also obanai looks like a stiff breeze would snap him in half and that, plus mitsuri mooning over obanai, rubs him the wrong way something awful. he claims it isn’t his business and that he has no opinion on the other hashira’s business, but he is most definitely watching mitsuri and obanai way too closely when no one is watching. it’s the obtuse bisexuality, y’all.

oh, right. almost forgot: he thinks he is 100% straight despite the steadily ramping evidence to the contrary.

a/n: a demon slayer au my friend and i were talking abt a bunch last week and i wanted to share it with you guys :))

like literally the au is just the demon slayers are the demons and the demons are the demon slayers it's prob been done before but still here it is besties (the hashiras turn into the 12 kizuki, the trainers are like the ex-kizuki members [like kyogai])

Genre/Warnings: Demon shit, body horror, just kinda creepy stuff cause the demons in Demon Slayer look busted most of the time, mentions of blood, gore, mentions of violence/death, religious stuff (gyomei)

~Giyuu Tomioka~

-Stays in the forest near a lake

-His voice echoes, kinda like how a siren's would. Since his voice is very calming and can go pretty far out, it lures a lot of people into his lake

-Blood Demon Art: Can create "reflections" of the demon slayers he's fighting out of the water in his lake. Every hit they land on Giyuu's version of them just goes straight through it since it's made of water but it's able to actually hurt the slayer (basically giyuu just makes little water minion to do his bidding)

-Would be very attached to the demon who turned him (which is Urokodaki) and would be absolutely livid if anyone managed to kill him

-After your encounter with an ex-kizuki member, you started hearing a strange voice echoing through the forest in front of you. Mistaking the man's calls as cries for help, you venture further into the forest not knowing you were walking into your death.

~Shinobu Kocho~

-Her eyes look just like a fly's, but instead of red they're purple

-Has pincers on the sides of her face

-Blood Demon Art: Can spit acid up to 5 feet (like an assassin bug) and if she manages to bite you, she can inject venom into your bloodstream with her freak ass bug tongue (like an ant)

~Sanemi Shinazugawa~

-The top half of his outfit would be tied around his waist (like how Susamaru had hers)

-The scars on his body would become mouths, and each mouth also has a voice so whenever Sanemi speaks it's like there are several voices speaking at the same time

-Blood Demon Art: Can literally take the their from a person's lungs and suffocate them. A demon slayer can't use their breathing technique if they can't breathe, right?

-Doesn't wash the blood off his clothes and he keeps the swords of the slayers he kills as trophies

~Tengen Uzui~

-Each dot on his face tattoo would become more eyes

-His three wives would change every so often because they're kidnapped female demon slayers

-Blood Demon Art: If he gets even the tiniest cut anywhere on his body, he'll be able to emit an incredibly high pitched sound to disorient his opponent

~Muichiro Tokito~

-Blood Demon Art: Creates a mist that, when inhaled, fogs the person's memory; making them forget what they were doing completely so he can easily attack them

-Honestly, he thinks killing the Hashiras Muzan sends after him is a chore, so he usually stays in the Infinite Fortress

-When he does go out though, he doesn't stay in one place for too long so he can avoid the demon slayers as much as possible. He doesn't want to waste energy on killing low level children

~Obanai Iguro~

-Pretty much a naga, the bottom half of his body is a serpent's tail

-Can unhinge his jaw to take some big ass fucking bites out of people

-His eyes can look in two different directions at the same time, making it hard for slayers to land a good hit on him

~Mitsuri Kanroji~

-Main territory is the red light district, she lures men into her little place and eats them

-Blood Demon Art: Similar to how Tamayo can force someone to tell the truth using her demon art, Mitsuri is able to attract people to her. No one wants to hurt the person they're attracted to, so it would make it easy for her to kill them.

-The prettiest demon Hashira by far, pretty much everyone else looks like some horrible grotesque creature

-She always tries to keep the clothes of the men she kills clean so she can give them to the girls in her house. Even if they are human, she still cares for them greatly

-Is the cleanest demon Hashira as well. She doesn't like making a mess of her room just to clean it up right after

-Mitsuri also likes to try different recipes with the men she eats. Having them raw just isn't as fun as cooking them herself

~Kyojuro Rengoku~

-Blood Demon Art: Similar to Esidisi from JJBA, he can make his blood boil. When the slayer manages to get a hit on him, his blood would splash on them and burn through anything it touched. The temperature of his blood is on par with lava

-Looks the most human out of pretty much all the demons, but something just seems very off about him

-When you're fighting him, he's stone faced until he gets bored of you. His smile just looks way too big for his face, and the amount of teeth in his mouth are far beyond what it should be

-Doesn't have eyelids so he literally never blinks

~Gyomei Himejima~

-Would be dressed as a traditional Buddhist priest/monk

-He kills demon slayers to "help them atone for their sins"

-Main method of killing would be using his rosary to choke them out, sometimes since he doesn't really know his own strength their heads pop off

-He cries blood instead of tears

-Blood Demon Art: Can make his blood as hard as diamond so the demon slayer would be unable to cut him on the first try, so he would be able to take advantage of their shock and kill them

~Tanjiro Kamado~

-Blood Demon Art: Just the same as Nezuko's, since they're siblings and all that

-He had come from a family of demon slayers, and after getting turned into one himself they all tried to kill him (except for Nezuko)

-Wears a muzzle only when Nezuko is around other demon slayers. They have to keep up a charade, but it's so hard to control himself sometimes and that's when the muzzle really helps

-His favorite part of the body is the heart. When he was human, everyone always saw him as kind and innocent but when he was turned he was seen as the complete opposite. He hopes that consuming the hearts of other people will return his old kind-hearted personality

~Nezuko Kamado~

-Nezuko followed in her parent's footsteps by joining the demon slayer corps, but instead of trying to find a cure for her brother she gets information and passes it to Tanjiro and the demon Hashiras.

-Nezuko ended up taking Tanjiro away from the bloody ruins of their home, and on their way down the mountain they ran into Giyuu who instructed them to go to Urokodaki so Tanjiro would be safe

-Has killed demon slayers who have seen her interacting with the demon Hashiras. She has to keep her record clean to climb the ranks and to help Tanjiro at the same time

~Zenitsu Agatsuma~

-Would lure people into a trap by guilt tripping them into being alone with him

-"Could you please help me? I lost my gramps, but I can't see him anywhere. Will you help me find him?" and then they'd get bodied

-Always avoids killing innocent people or new demon slayers. He feels so bad for taking their lives away from them, but sometimes he just can't help it

-He'll style the female demon slayers hair after he kills them so they can be just as pretty as they were in life when they get to Heaven

~Inosuke Hashibira~

-The boar mask would become his actual head

-Instead of duel wielding swords, they would be some big ass fangs that he swings around to impale demon slayers

-Inosuke fights dirty. He'll snap his jaws at you and laugh hysterically when he manages to take a chunk out of your arm

-Actively seeks out demon slayers to kill. He never kills regular people because they don't put up a good enough fight for him

-Eats every part of the body, including the bones

~Misc Characters~

-Kanae was a spider-esque demon and cocooned people in her webs to feed a young Shinobu and Kanao until she was killed

-Kanao was human-turned-demon by the sisters

-Urokodaki is an ex-kizuki member and all of his trainees are now the demons in the Final Selection

-the Fox Children, led by Urokodaki, are merciless to any wannabe slayer that comes into their forest looking to make it out alive. Most of the demon slayers that make it out are nearly dead or had ran straight through, not even trying to get a kill

-the Fox Children wear the masks because their faces are incredibly fox-like (think like, mid transition animorphs cover)

-Nobody knows what Urokodaki's face looks like, but based on his mask that's for the best

~General Stuff~

-In this au, the demons actually stick together and the demon slayers work alone which makes the Hashira Kizuki way fucking scarier than they already were

-And because these demons work together, they're all going to hold grudges against certain demon slayers

-When Kanae was killed, the demon Hashira went apeshit, especially Gyomei. Pairing his strength and horrible blinding rage at the fact his coven lost a very important member, every slayer he kills within the first year of Kanae's death die in horrible ways.

-Imagine following the directions your dove gave you to an old, overgrown sanctuary secluded in the mountains. The moonlight does little to illuminate your surroundings, but one thing you do see is the mangled body of your fellow demon slayer hanging from a tree. The only thing keeping them together is their spinal cord, and the impossibly large hand holding their head to a branch.

-The Hashiras are all extremely savage and violent, rarely ever sparing a human life. (sometimes Shinobu or Kanao might feel bad and spare a small child or elderly person, but other than that nobody is safe)

-Crows would service the demons, and doves would service the demon slayers. Everyone is always wary around crows because nobody knows whether that particular one belongs to a demon or not

The Demon Slayer Hashira Ranked

So this is something that no one asked for, but I thought that it would be fun cause I just finished rereading the demon slayer manga and need to express my feelings in some way, lmao

It contains minor spoilers, I guess?

But I’m ranking the Hashira from best to worst (in my opinion don’t come for me but I’m happy to discuss)

Tengen Uzui

I usually have two criteria for if I like characters: would I interact with them in real life, and do I find them funny? Tengen only meets the later part of the criteria, and I find him hilarious lmao

Seriously he’s so funny to me. I can’t wait for season 2 to see this big man in action.

Sanemi Shinazugawa

HE JUST WANTED HIS BROTHER TO GROW OLD AND HAVE A FAMILY, AND HE NEEDS A HUG

I hated him at first, but now I love him.

Also, his English dub voice is the only one I can stand (cause hello, Dazai). I hate everyone else’s

Mitsuri Kanroji

STRONG GIRL IS BEST GIRL

My only nit-picky issue with her is I wish she looked strong and capable, not like the string bean.

Not like super buff and everything, but stronger than her skinny string bean arms currently look. I get the description of why. But that’s just my personal opinion.

Obani Iguro 

He’s an asshole, but I love him anyway.

I think I like him as much as I do cause I love his haori, I love Sabito and Makomo, and he was honestly the first character that I remembered the name of. 

I genuinely couldn’t remember anyone’s names until like episode 10, but Giyuu’s stuck real quick, and I remembered him quickly (the only other character to do that for me was Akaza)

Shinobu Kocho

I think I actually like Kanao more, but I had to rank her somewhere.

She gives me Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter vibes.

Overall 6/10

Gyomei Himejima

His backstory was sad, but I didn’t get super attached.

I liked the mini-training-arc where they all had to push the giant boulders, and I wish I could’ve seen more of his relationship with Genya.

Kyojuro Rengoku

I know he’s a fan favorite, but he, in general, bugs me, and I never got super attached to him. 

I didn’t even really care about his death that much and liked his brother Senjuro a lot more. 

It’s kinda funny because he’s my friend’s favorite, and she smacks me whenever I talk smack about him.

ALSO, HE LOOKS LIKE A GREAT HORNED OWL, AND NO ONE CAN CHANGE MY MIND ABOUT THAT

Universal Studios Japan, Kimetsu no Yaiba Attractions (2021/9/17- 2022/2/13)

While the main attraction is the Kimetsu no Yaiba XR Ride, there were other Kimetsu attractions throughout the park to enjoy, and I’m leaving my experience of them below the cut. General thoughts first: It was so, so, so, so, so much fun. I want to start by giving a shout out to all the cast members throughout the park? I know its their job and they work by an interaction manual, and they must go home exhausted, but their attitudes and interactions were what really made the day for me. Right down to the guy sweeping water into a gutter after the rain stopped, their proactiveness in guest interactions made me feel very open and comfy about being a fangirl, especially a Kimetsu fangirl. They were ready at any moment to make comments like, “oh, we’re so lucky to have a Kakushi to help” when one of my friends helped me put an armband back on and one waitress who rushed in to help me carry my tray was eager to point out my Mitsuri mask. They all made chit-chat so easy and it felt like every single person there was rooting for me, personally, to have a good time. I had my katana umbrella with me (which I rarely get chances to use, because it turns heads), and I got compliments on it all day. There weren’t as many as usual because of the weather, but I also got to interact with Kimetsu cosplayers in person for the first time. It was the funniest thing to find Douma and Akaza hanging out together at lunch, and then when I finally ran into them again later to ask for a photo Douma had a giant Snoopy doll and glowing Mario star bucket, and… that is so Douma.

In the décor and music, there were so many little details taken into account, the whole atmosphere was so good. While your eyes go first to the statue of Tanjiro and Rengoku, you eventually notice other little things, like the silhouette of Inosuke and Zenitsu above the entrance to the line, and even Chuntaro on the gate to the ride entrance. The outdoor space between the Mugen Train themed restaurant and the Kimetsu ride had exciting use of the movie soundtrack, and the line for the ride had a whole bunch of nice tracks from the series while also using their graphics with general info about the ride and using VR glasses all done up in Taisho trendy styles. My favorite use of Kimetsu lore and motifs was in the Wisteria mansion themed restaurant, which I’ll get to, because it was both so pretty and because it gave such depth to the setting. Will do a separate post for the food itself.

Nezuko Popcorn, Demon Slayer Corp Special Training Course, Merchandise I list these first because we started the day with these. Didn’t want to let those popcorn buckets run out before my friends got theirs! The whole cart had a Nezuko design which was super cute and when they rang you up at the counter it made a happy Nezuko noise. I don’t usually collect objects this big, so I didn’t bring one home, I just… I just wanted to meet her. And I got to hold her like a baby.

There was a little cart selling packets for people who wanted to do a little Special Training Game. It was very, very simple and aimed at small children, but no one was going to stop me and one of my cohorts from getting in on the action. You start with armbands that say “in training” and following the little game and answer questions based on what you smell or hear or feel or see first in different spots, and then that leads you the final question to see which Breath suits you. After you report back, they give you new stuff to slip into your armband to suit your Breath. My friend (who happened to be wearing a Shinobu manicure) got Insect Breath, and I got Thunder Breath.

We also made our first merch run early in the day, for fear that they’d sell out of stuff (frequently the case on busy days). That wasn’t a problem for us at all, though, and I was happy with the money I dropped. The hair ties were so pretty, I got three, and I also got a Giyuu mug (because you have to know the character to see more than just a nice mug and I love sly merch like that), and the most perfect piece of Inosuke merch I’ve ever stuck my head into. Hollywood Dream: The Ride We lined up for this because it had temporary Kimetsu elements added to it, but I didn’t actually know what kind of ride it was until we showed up. While I used to be a rollercoaster enthusiast as a kid (despite almost always keeping my eyes closed and hands tightly on the bars), it had been so long since I rode a big coaster that I didn’t know if I was still a fan of them or not. I kept my eyes open this time and it pushed tears down either side of my face, in a good way, hahaha. So, what’s the Kimetsu spin (no pun intended) on this big coaster with classic drops and bunny hills and positive and negative G-forces at work the whole time? This ride has speakers playing behind the head of each rider, and each rider can select the theme music they want blasting into their ears. I thought the “Total Concentration” selection was just going to be an array of KnY BGM, but it was constant dialogue from the Kamaboko squad (I hear that an earlier version was Tanjiro and Rengoku). It was perfectly timed with every twist and turn of the ride. Tanjiro saying hello and making sure Nezuko is all fastened and secure, and Inosuke being eager to know what’s going, Zenitsu slowly realizing what he’s strapped in for and begging to be let off. Inosuke of course laughs and has a great time, Nezuko has a normal amount of pleasure from the excitement, but mostly you get Shimono-san screaming directly into your ears. There’s also Tanjiro apologizing to you like he’s sitting next to you and his friends must have caused you trouble with all that ruckus.

It was loud, but I must state again, it was perfect.

Mugen Ressha Diner (not the official name but that’s what it felt like) The uniforms here were like those of the ladies working on the Mugen train, having to carry all those empty bentou boxes. And might I mention again how exceedingly nice and friendly everyone was???

The place was decorated with Flame Hashira décor on the outside, and inside there were screens with screenshots from the movie. This is a good time to mention that all the receipts at Kimetsu related places had special little messages written at the top, and the one I got here had Rengoku-san telling me I’d make a great Tsuguko. Aww, thanks! Especially fitting since I was wearing my Mitsuri mask and about to sit down to stuff my face!

Now, uh… speaking of the actual eating experience, I’ve made a separate post about the food itself. I was in for a shock.

I seem more like a vanquished demon here than a Tsuguko.

Wisteria Restaurant When it comes to the atmosphere, this spot was my favorite. They had you queue in stages both indoors and outdoors for crowd control, but we didn’t have to wait long at all. For any waiting you did have to do, there was plenty to look at in the décor and to listen to in the audio tracks that it would have been hard to feel bored. The audio was a mix of KnY BGM and original audio of Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke visiting the same restaurant. Inosuke orders just about everything on the menu and then gets a food coma by the end of it. Poor Tanjiro and Zenitsu have such trouble getting him to behave.

As for the actual flow, once they gave us our table number and let us get in out of the rain as soon as possible, a lady met us on the stairs and addressed us as “onigari-sama” (demon hunters-sama) and explained that everyone there had been helped by onigari in the past and now would do anything to show their gratitude and take care of us.

Once we got to our table and put our things down, they summoned us to go meet the Water Pillar and Insect Pillar. Furthermore, we had an important mission to deliver a medicinal component (a flower in a purple vial) to Kochou-sama. Once it was our turn, we got to deliver that to her at the table and sit down for a photo with her. Tomioka-san, for whatever reason, stayed off to the side and did not interact with us whatsoever.

Of the set lunch menus, we got one of each—the Giyuu themed set, the Shinobu themed set, and the Uzui themed flamboyant sushi set. Again, I’ll make a separate post for the food itself later. There were also fancy drinks and desserts, like the most decorative plate of ohagi I’ve ever seen. We stuck with drinks, though.

We were served “oniyoke” (demon-warding) tea, which was actually a jasmine tea but was said to have wisteria fragrance included for good measure. Again, the staff was exceedingly pleasant and attentive and asked for my thoughts on the flamboyant sushi and everything. I had very few thoughts, for I was busy soaking in all the little details throughout the place, right down to the carved wood tablet they gave us with our number to claim our photo with Kochou-sama and Tomioka-sama if we wanted it later. When we did leave, at the cash register they had was turn around to clack sparks across our backs and wish us good luck in our battles, and the lady who saw us off to the elevator likewise expressed her gratitude to us brave onigari and wished us luck as we continued our mission.

Kimetsu no Yaiba XR Ride The main event!

Once you get through the main part of the line, entertained by the Taisho style screens about how to wear VR glasses and the familiar music, and spotting more and more cosplayers as the weather improved (Iguro! Himejima! Yushiro!), they take you into one of three green screen photo studios to try to sell you something with the characters at either side of your group later, and then shortly after that you’re on your way to the first informative room, cameras off.

There, VR-style Tanjiro is trying to tell Zenitsu and Inosuke to behave at the train station, where Inosuke is chowing down on a bentou box and Zenitsu is trying to figure out the VR glasses. As Tanjiro welcomes you and starts giving you the low-down, Zenitsu is like, “what? You didn’t tell me there might be demons!!” and Tanjiro ignores him and goes on, explaining how this ride is what’s known as a rollercoaster in the west, and how to enjoy it, and Zenitsu interrupts by whispering to you how it might just be one big nightmare, until Tanjiro tells him to cool it and apologizes to you by saying how Zenitsu isn’t good with thrill rides. Inosuke is ready to go and spins around with the empty bentou box as he points the way in, forcing Tanjiro and Zenitsu to duck so they don’t get hit in the head with that thing.

Once you’re closed off in the next room and given more instructions to prepare for the ride, you start seeing Enmu’s shadows in the windows as the lights flicker and he tells you to relax and enjoy the dream he’s prepared. As you go down the other halls leading to the ride with additional instructions, there is more ominous imagery, like Enmu’s eyes on you.

So then all the attendants, dressed in their conductor style uniforms, get you strapped in and ready. The first time around I just stared straight ahead because I didn’t know what I was in for (and during the action parts of the ride that’s the best thing to do), but we rode a second time toward the end of the day so I looked around more at the gentle beginning parts as the train starts to leave the station. If you look around, you see more of the inside of the train and out the windows into the bustling Taisho era town, and if you look to your lap, you even find yourself in trendy Taisho clothing!

So the train takes off, as Enmu welcomes you… and then zoom, you enter a dream!

Tanjiro’s dream, to be precise. In that snowy landscape, as you’re climbing a mountain to the first drop, Enmu’s head starts coming at you as his flesh appears to your left and right and in front of you, until Tanjiro drops in and assures you he’s going to protect you. Then, the ride drops and throw you around with his Water Breath techniques!

Then bam, Tanjiro drops away and you’ve passed through an opening to another dream world, it’s like a happy peach garden but everything is dark, past twilight. As the Enmu appendages start coming at you faster, Nezuko’s there to protect you! She won’t let anything happen to you, even if just barely! And then who should show up to help Nezuko, but Zenitsu! He appears in the distance first before showing up to save Nezuko, and then he delivers his classic line while right in front of you. Nezuko pauses to listen but then dashes off to keep fighting, the ride speeds up as Zenitsu delivers his Sixfold attack. As you get thrown through the portal to another dream, Zenitsu, off to the side, snores and just falls off the train into the distance.

So then you got Inosuke right up there in your face as you’re passing through a cave, and he’s like, “hey, why haven’t you woken up yet? Come on!!” and he slashes a bat away from you before it can get in your face. So the boss takes care of you a bit before you’re passing through a dead looking twilight forest of tree tunnels and—uh oh

--UH OH---

It’s Akaza. Akaza tells you straight to your face how he hates weaklings.

And then, who should show up but Rengoku-san! He apologizes for being late, and then Tanjiro shows up right behind him and checks to make sure you’re okay too. Rengoku tells Tanjiro to protect the passengers as Akaza’s stomping on his snowflake, and then as the attacks start pouring in, Rengoku-san takes the brunt of them while Tanjiro saves you from anything that got through and is flying your way. The tension keeps building and building, and as you watch the fight from right behind, just like Tanjiro is finding himself helpless to step in and do anything, everything starts burning bright with Rengoku-san’s Flame Breathing techniques like a tunnel until it all goes white.

Then you find yourself back on the train, it’s sunny outside. Tanjiro is on the seat in front of you asking if you’re okay, if you’re awake now. That must had been some dream, hadn’t it? It’s all safe now, we’ve arrived. Meanwhile, Inosuke is jumping around on the seats and looking outside while Zenitsu fails to make him behave, and Nezuko opens her box curiously to look at you while staying safe from the light.

And then the staff all clap and welcome you back and guide you to where to take your glasses to return them for cleaning, and they all seem happy for you that you had a good, however brief time on the ride.

Cause yeah. Tee hee. Hee hee hee. Yeah. It was cool. I had fun.

Other thoughts: Like I said, I’ll go more into food elsewhere, and the park atmosphere was lots of fun. I often try to keep my fangirliness contained even as I am faced with Kimetsu no Yaiba everywhere in my daily life, but it was so fun to have everyone be on the same wavelength and speaking the same language.

I had the pleasure of running into a bunch of these cosplayers all at the same time later and got permission to post this photo (Japanese cosplay culture tends to be stricter about showing cosplayers how the results looked and getting permission for posting). I don’t know if they all knew each other before hand, but I saw Rengoku and Uzui on their own earlier, and Akaza and Douma together a couple times. When I caught up and asked for a photo and told Akaza we were sad not to have caught them at the restaurant and how funny it was to see the two of them hanging out, Akaza whispered, “yeah, no, we’re not friends, Douma just thinks we are”. Likewise, when I saw them all later Douma seemed perfectly comfortable interacting with Shinobu like they were also friends, because of course they are, right? There was also a Tanjiro and Zenitsu pair who I got a photo with shortly after they entered the park and they were so bumblingly in-character like, “here, I’ll protect you!!” “me too! Um, um, what am I even doing in this photo!” “You’re asleep!”

It was so much fun being a world that was tailored to my special interests. There was so much to take in. But now I’m also wiped out from all the excitement and just want to stay wrapped up in this Inosuke blanket and write fanfic while drinking tea from my Giyuu mug.

I really like your shigaraki redraw! I was wondering how you choose the colours of your drawings, you begin with black and white or you have already in mind a specific palette? I always struggle with coloring, especially in this period, I always feel disappointed with my art :(

and yeah !! so when i color something, its usually just me playing around with the different program functions; seeing what i can do with different colors and layers on multiply / color burn / overlay, etc., tone curve, gradient map, so on and so forth. i think i have some form of aphantasia, so rather than having an image in my head of what i want something to look like, i’ll usually figure it out through trial and error according to some like. i guess Feeling of how it should look. such as, if you want to go for a gloomy theme, you might want to adopt a cooler color palette; more purples, blues, and greens. or if you’re going for a different approach, say smth like love, you might opt for a warmer palette in which you use reds and oranges. ofc they arent rules or anything, but they can be a nice guideline if you’re having trouble deciding where to start . i think curiosity for how certain colors interact will bring you large percent of the way. after that, it’s more a matter of personal preference for whichever colors you think fits the best. 

im sorry you’re feeling disappointed with your art though !! thats such a tough feeling to work through but i hope you can find some methods that work for you ! i can go ahead and share my process if that gives you some idea for what to try :3

at the most basic level, i’ll usually have a base layer of a character’s normal palette and then i’ll have a few extra layers set to overlay, multiply, color burn, etc. on top. usually of reds or purples because those are my fav colors :3 i use layer settings like multiply to add shadows, glow dodge / screen to add highlights, and color burn / overlay / soft light to shift the hues or saturation of the colors in some particular direction. for instance, heres a mitsuri pic i edited. her colors are too cool for my preference, so i went ahead and added an orange color dodge layer to the right side at 74% opacity . i looked at how the layer looked in multiply, overlay, color burn, color dodge, etc. and the different opacity levels before deciding on this particular combination. depending on what program you use, you might not have these settings. i believe paint tool sai has less than clip studio paint, but they usually share a few in common.

as you can tell, its already a lot warmer and headed towards the direction i want :3 but in giving it this orange hue, i feel like i’ve made it darker, too. so to make it more exciting, im going to add some new colors to her eyes and hair. i think yellow will be a nice compliment to the greens, so im gonna go ahead and add a yellow highlight using glow dodge at 18% opacity.

and if i decide i want to add a few extra shadows just ‘cause, i’ll usually pick some pre-existing color off my drawing to keep the palette more cohesive. in this case, i went ahead and chose the reddish-purple color from her uniform and put it on a new multiply layer at 15% opacity

they’re small individual additions all things considered, but i enjoy watching them build on each other :3 . thats usually the process i’ll take when drawing w a base color. add or take how you like

in the case of the shigaraki one, i initially colored in black and white because i wanted to emulate the manga appearance, but once i colored his iris red i decided i wanted to add some more colors overall. something you can do with greyscale images that i like to do is add gradient maps !! these can transform your blacks & greys into actual color which you can then adjust with more layer editing (like above). your program may come with pre-set gradients, or you can download new color packs online / make your own. 

left is the original, middle is a dark blue-to-red gradient map at 71% opacity, and the right is that same gradient with increased contrast, orange color burn layer at 60% , and 15 gradient posterization.

they all add color in their own way, its just up to you to choose which direction to go :-) 

the different program settings can be confusing @ first but they’re a lot of fun to play around with if you ever have the time. and once you start to learn how these settings generally affect the drawing / its color, you’ll have a more innate feeling of how to use them without needing to think about it much before hand

Any Kny character you've grown to love/appreciate more??

Thanks for waiting, Anon, I have been trying to really, really hard to narrow this down, but the answer remains: the vast majority of the cast. The only character I loved right away was Tanjiro and that love kept me watching, as with almost every new character I was like, "ugh, I hate this guy. Here I was, having fun being emotionally invested in a high quality anime, and this might ruin it for me." But then the instant I see a different side of their character, I'm like, "...Oh." To go into some examples...

Zenitsu: I could not stand him right away, I hate womanizers, and his conniptions would go on so long that they held up the story. But Gotouge/Ufotable strung me along perfectly, the first glimpse of Thunder Breath made me immediately pay attention and think, "oh, that was cool. I want to see more of that." Seeing him protect the box pretty firmly put him in the "I need to protect this child" box in my heart. And then the spider demon happens, and I'm sending desperate reaction messages to a friend like "NOOOOOO!!!! BABBBBBBBBBYYYYYYYY!!!!" And then he annoyed me all over again at the start of Functional Recovery, ahaha. It's hard to remember how annoyed I was because I'm such a Zen Stan now, and he was a very firm favorite of mine by the time I finished binging the anime up to the last couple episodes, which I waited for as they came out. Inosuke: He was one of the reasons I was curious about the series, I saw some promotional art and was super curious about Nezuko's muzzle (I was one of the people who thought it was some ancient scroll or something, haha) and the kid with the boar mask. The art I saw showed his face, and I assumed he'd be some kid with a cracking voice performed by a female seiyuu. As much as I love Matsuoka's performance now, initially, since I knew what his face looked like, I found it grossly off-putting the moment I heard it. Then every chaotic thing Inosuke did dug a deeper hole; I very quickly decided I hated him, especially when he started beating up on the kid I was starting to like. As his chaos subsided he just became a character I tolerated, and then this happened:

Images you can hear, am I right? This immediately flipped the "BABY" switch in my heart. It was also a lot of fun to understand the Inosuke memes I was seeing everywhere. So by the end of the anime, I loved, loved, loved, loved the Tanjiro/Zenitsu/Inosuke interactions and desperately wanted more (still didn't like how Zenitsu bothered Nezuko, though). I was so impatient for more, but the manga art looked disappointingly off-putting. I figured the anime was successful enough that there'd eventually be more of it, and I wanted to be patient, but then I poked around, read some spoilers, got back into Tumblr to look at fanart and memes, saw a spoiler image of Tanjiro affected by Muzan's poison and the binge-read began. (That's kind of a lie, but I'll get to that.) Let's back up a few episodes. There I was, having a great time, the guy who I forgot about from Episode 1 was back and haha, I guess everyone hates him, and the chick who I figured was going to be a medic who saves Zenitsu in the nick of time turned out to be savage, awesome. I was sending reactions to my friends who were ahead of me, and then we left off seeing the Pillars staring down Best Boy. And I...

Well. Uh. Here, I've dug up an old convo for you, my comments are in blue.

Immediately followed by a passionate vocal rant, which I have transcribed here:

“I feel like what happened was that the mangaka was sitting around with his assistants and was like, ‘welp, gotta make this whole cast of characters, they gotta be so-o-o-o many more levels of extreme than all the other characters I’ve had so far, which isn’t hard, because all of the background characters are cannon fodder and I’ve just gotta leave them all with black hair and no personality traits. So! Gotta go to the opposite of the spectrum with the BIG! POWERFUL! People so no-o-o-body can be normal.’ And so he and his assistants sat down, and they all wrote down just random words or traits, and them put ‘em all in a hat. And then for each character, they pulled out a few of them and said, ‘OK. We’re gonna put these things together, now we have a character.’ And he was probably also like, ‘Iiiiiiiiiiiii’ll flesh them out later. For now, they just need t’… be there, and make an impact. How do we make an impact? By making sure it’s super, super clear what their character traits are. Here, we’ll have this guy repeat the word //HADE//…. ////HA DEEE//// over and over and over… to show that he’s a /showy/ person. Because he /cares/ about that. And he //should// care because that is his character and that’s why he’s powerful.’ OH MY GOSH, it’s so dumb.”

......orz I feel like Genya looking back at how he acted at the end of the Final Selection. I'm sorry, Gotouge, I had not even encountered your love for these characters yet in your little alligator form. Nor had I encountered the yet unseen-sides of these traumatized dragons and tigers. ...*coughs* Um. So. I was pretty harsh.

So this was my mindset, I went into the manga not caring about most of these characters and just wanting more Kamaboko squad interactions and wanting to hurry up and catch up to the battle with Muzan. And it's worth stating that I didn't mean to read it at first. I encountered a few spoilers, and just wanted to look for the context surrounding those parts, and then hunt for the (non-existent) build-up to those parts, and so... uh.........

I read a lot of the manga out of order, and yeah, that did affect how much I cared about what was going on. I didn't actually properly process a lot of it until later re-reads. But to try to state some things simply about each Pillar:

Giyuu: He was just 'ok' to me for a long time, I could see the appeal for why people I knew were fangirling over him but he didn't do it for me. His soft spot for Tanjiro was indeed endearing, though, and I firmly liked him by the time chapter 200 came out and I was properly heartbroken on his behalf.

Shinobu: She was intriguing, and then I liked her as soon as I saw her savage side, she was one of the characters I went hunting for spoilers for.

Rengoku: That stare really put me off at first, but I fell for him over the process of Tanjiro falling for him. When I first finished the train arc I sat back and said, "wow! That's going to make for a good movie!" and then in psyching myself out for the movie several months in advance, I fell hook, line, and sinker and was totally excited for him each time I saw the trailers. And then the movie was *stunning* and I love him even more. Uzui: He was the Pillar I hated most upon first meeting them. I blame the repeated use of his catchphrase. But then when he let his hair down to sell the kiddos the change in design helped warm me up more to him, like, "oh, there was a human in there." It took a long time for him to become more interesting to me, and an uncharacteristically subtle journey to becoming a character I liked. I am currently getting more and more psyched out for him and eager to see how much more I'm going to like him with the shiny Ufotable treatment. Mitsuri: At first I didn't remember her name, I had code-named her as "Boobs." But I kinda had a feeling she was going to grow on me quickly, and I was right, she's one of my easy favorites now. Muichiro: Who? Oh yeah, that kid who always kinda fell to the wayside in my attention. I'd see a lot of Muichiro-themed blogs and hear a lot of little girls looking at merch and showing a clear favoritism of him, and I'd like always react like Muichiro and just be like, "...", and then when I read his major battles I was more emotionally invested in things going on concurrently with other characters, and I was still like, "...", and then two days ago I revisited a Muichiro scene and was suddenly like, "......OH!!! MUICHIRO!!!!!" Himejima: I never really hated Himejima, even if I found his first impression kind of wimpy (haha... oh, I was so wrong). I had a pretty easy acceptance of him too, so I would generally count him among characters I like, but if you were to ask me why, I'd draw a blank. It's kind of a weirdly mature, subdued appreciation for him rather than passionate fangirling. But weirdly when I was daydreaming the other day I found myself thinking, "if I had to marry someone in the KnY cast, it would be Himejima." So like, not a fiery romance, but I see him as my dependable, sturdy rock to grow old with??? What is up with you, sub-conscious?? Iguro: My interest in him rises and falls. Being a Mitsuri fan helped warm me up to his character in the first place, which was the emotional tie I needed since his backstory didn't grip me much (I found it a frustrating distraction while I was desperately reading weekly updates). Reading more subtle details about his character in the fanbooks has brought me around and made me more curious about him, like I'd really like to be a fly on the wall for the conversation he had with Uzui one day about their pasts.

Sanemi: Hahaha, wow. He was so unlikable in the beginning, wasn't he? His character design (yeah, the eyes) was really off-putting too. But then I got to know him and there was no going back, I got totally played. He's a character I'm pretty fond of now and one of the characters I've enjoyed delving into most in fanfic. To keep this answer from getting too long, for the vaaaaaast majority of the cast, I was initially like, "meh" or "OK" or "ew" but now am like, "EEEEEEEEE, I LOVE THIS TOTALLY RANDOM UNIMPORTANT SIDE CHARACTERRRRRRR" so you know... times change. And the more time I spend obsessed with Kimetsu no Yaiba, the more I like them all, so even the characters I'm lukewarm on will probably have their eventual days when they take over my heart and smash it.
