For those who missed it: introducing txt fic hub!

Hello moablr! Guess who? 🥸 I don’t know if anyone is here who does not know that I moved blogs, but, surprise! It’s aleyna from the now deleted blog, cupidchois xD

Anyway, let me get back on track.

Back on December 2021, I was sketching out a plan to start a discord server for all txt fic writers & readers!

Why was I working on something like that? Well, the writing community was declining rapidly. And sadly, it has only worsened since then. In case you’re still not aware, the interactions have been decreasing to the point it feels pointless sometimes, writers have got their works stolen and reposted, and, people still get hate over literally anything, for god knows what reason! So many writers have quit because of the above mentioned reasons and more, and there are many who are contemplating to do the same. Can you blame them, though?

If you are someone who has been here since 2020/21, you know exactly what I’m talking about. And what does this server has to do with what is going on? It’s an attempt to help with the current situation.

Now, why should you consider joining the txt fic hub? How will that benefit you?

If you are a writer, we strive to create a space where you can promote your works, seek help for anything writing related (beta readers, fic banners, tumblr advice) and connect with the fellow writers and obviously, the readers. We’ve added the sprinto bot for writers who are looking for sprints! We welcome mxr writers as well as mxm writers!

If you are a reader, you can easily find new fics to read by checking the fic promotion channels! If you have a favorite fic you want to share with others, there’s a fic rec channel for that too! You can help out the writer’s by providing feedback!

In general, you can make new connections, have fun chatting, and help strengthen the bond of the moablr writing community! You can select your unique roles from the customization channel! We have various bots for your entertainment (memes, music, etc.), and we take suggestions, so you can always tell us what you think would be nice addition to the server! We also have different spaces created for minors and adults <3

Additionally, you’ll only have to follow a few chat rules and promotion rules! This is not any type of network, so you can leave at any moment if you get overwhelmed (we will try our best to not let that happen) or simply lose interest; and there’s absolutely nothing you need to notify the admins about. This is your place, and you can share as little or as much information you feel comfortable with!

The server is up and currently consists of 91 active and inactive members! If you face any problems, you can always reach out to me (the admin) or the mods who are there to help out! 😊

Have A Drink On Me

I have been a student of consumer behavior ever since I took my first course in the subject 40 years ago. It marries all the topics I enjoy: psychology, sociology, and demographics. Collectively, you could say that CB is really the anthropology of shopping.

All of this helps explain the many influences on what we buy, but in the end, it is still imperfect. Sometimes you just cannot put your finger on the motivations that cause people to do certain things. These are the deep, dark secrets that all humans harbor. But that’s a topic for another day. Let’s just focus on the things we know with certainty, including two artifacts recently revealed in a comprehensive survey of online shoppers.

The first finding makes sense. It is observable, and it is measurable. To no one’s big surprise, and probably to the great relief of companies doing it, a large percentage of shoppers report being influenced by ads they had seen in social media. Seventy-four-percent of respondents said they have bought something they saw on Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok. This is up from 40% only five years ago. Interestingly, there was a gender difference, with 78% of men reporting this type of online shopping behavior, compared to 70% among women.

Count me in that man camp.

But it was the second prong of this research that caused analysts to take special note: Intoxication is also a big driver of online shopping. As much as I advise my students never to drunk tweet or drunk text, it turns out that drunk shopping can be just as dangerous. Well, at least in terms of your financial well-being.

Once again, it is men leading the charge of the drunk brigade, with a 60-40 advantage over women. Yes. Nearly two-thirds of male online shoppers have reported doing so while drunk. At least they’re not driving. And while I do shop a lot online, and have been influenced by all those social media ads, I have thus far resisted any urge or call to carelessness to start clicking away after a few cold ones.

But wait, there’s more! There’s another driver in all of this, and that is Millennials, those born between 1980 and 1996, are the most likely to be influenced by social media as well as shop while sauced. My demo—the Boomers—is pretty low on both counts.

There’s a lot to unpack from this study, but the essence of it is this: young adults are very untraditional in their shopping influences. Furthermore, these data points are likely to converge in one place: their smartphone. It’s all too easy to be influenced by social media and do all manner of drunken things, be it shopping or posting messages you may later regret, on a device you can hold in your hand.

It is also clear why we see so many adverts on social media that not only invite us to “find out more,” but also to “shop now.” Those savvy marketers are making it as easy as possible to pull the trigger. While Amazon is the most common shopping destination via social media, it could be anywhere. And given that we keep payment methods stored in digital wallets, or online in the case of Amazon, it is easier than ever before to buy things without having to actually pull out a credit card.

It is important for marketers to know as much as possible about their customers. Establishing the effectiveness of social media ads is critical, because it helps companies direct more of their ad budget in that direction. As I tell my students in Digital Marketing, it’s not like ad budgets expanded when all of the digital platforms arrived. Marketers just had to figure out how to slice the budget into smaller pieces.

As for drunk shopping, all I can say is Caveat Emptor. Let the buyer beware, because you may very well forget what you bought last Friday night, only to find it on your front porch tomorrow. You just think your life goes better with alcohol.

Anon 2: Someone posted on another blog that Seb took the barnacle to set today. Wonder if that’s true or not? I also wonder if this will get a pap shot?

Anon 3: Okay it’s not a picture it’s someone who works on the set that said it, CB was asked to stay in the trailer and not have any contact with people on set and she apparently did it

Anon 4: There is a rumor that Sebastian brought Ale on the set of Pam and Tommy... do you believe that?

These 4 can be addressed in one combined response. There’s two possibilities here regarding this story. It’s either:

This is made up stuff for this person to get attention

This is another setup for the pap walk we’re suspecting will happen as soon as her official quarantine period is over.

We think that she got to L.A. on the 15th, so after this weekend, she’s allowed to be seen walking around in public. So IF bits of this story are true (we’re pretty sure at this point a LOT of things about this story is made up), it’s possible that means the pap walk will be in the form of Alejandra being seen with her “boyfriend” as he does pre-production stuff. Otherwise if this story isn’t true, then the pap walk will be in the form of something else. We just have to sit and wait for the next dumpster fire to start any day now.

Anon 5: I find it interesting it was sent to the Soho blog out of other Sebastian blogs. This is also the same blog who says they know where he is. They are like the new Deux of Tumblr. She knows they have a large following. Out of all the gossip blogs why them? I think soho knows things.

It is rather interesting considering she follows that blog, has LIKED some of the posts related to Sebastian/Alejandra. Also they seem to be kind of on the fence between whether they think it’s real or PR. Pretty convenient place to submit a post and then draw readers to your blog to post more content indicating stuff that seem to fit the “they are real” narrative. Yet she says she has no idea if they are PR or fake. I’m getting dizzy trying to follow any of this.

Anon 6: This story is very poorly told. Drop rumors on blogs instead of photos on twitter, instagram or pay to have an article in the daily mail or jj and so far a single person who says (work on set), without photos or video of cb on set listening to them in the car; all this after the article that was published yesterday about the zodiac that deisy and the photo of the walk and audio from twitter. Very strange that. Let's see if there is a picture of them in the car.

We need more than just someone claiming things to believe they’re true. That’s one of the guiding principles we established from the very start.

Anon 7: The person who says working on the set says: first that he saw them kissing more sebastian was on the coast, that cb introduced himself, cb was expelled for not having auditioned for the covid, who overheard the two talking, that she drove him by car , that cb stayed 5-10 minutes, that sebastian had done his hair and tattoo and that he had a long hair, that sebastian was doing hair and makeup, said that when he arrived on set at 5 am sebastian was already there.

You forgot how apparently this person “could tell they’re fucking.” Other than that you pretty much summarized their story and the answers to some of the questions they got from people.

The key purpose of a Tumblr blog here is really a brain dump: logging thoughts, feelings, narrative and such is easier in long form than via a brief Facebook post that generates half a dozen "oh no, what happened" comments. As I'm writing this, most of it seems like bullet points and organized timelines. If you're looking for a TL;DR or current state of thoughts, it's the last section titled The Day After, and the Day After That.

A few days ago, Niko and I said goodbye to our first dog, Charlie Brown.

I'm not keen to chat about it a lot. There's more to process than I have time to type; most of it centers around being fair to myself and to Niko, taking the time to appreciate his life without beating ourselves up, and avoiding the overwhelming mire that grief can become.

Joining the Family

CB was a rescue, a hapless victim of the 2016 Louisiana floods and a happy-go-lucky participant in a "dog for a day" event hosted by a local shelter. I fully expected to rent him out for a day, give him a few great experiences, and return him. For myriad reasons, we never did bring him back to Pet Rescue by Judy, and he's been with us ever since.

At adoption, he was estimated to be around 4-8 years old. With a kicked-in shoulder that offset his collarbone and ribcage, some assorted dental issues, and other little signs of damage (cigarette burns, what the heck is wrong with people), it was tough to really gauge his age. That means he left this world at the ripe old age of something like 9-13, which isn't terrible considering all he'd been through.

Charlie Brown was the iconic good boy. He seldom barked, he never licked or jumped, and just wanted to be in the same room as his favorite people. He had a few toys that he cherished, never ripping them up, just carrying them with him from room to room and whining a bit, unsure of where he could store them for safekeeping. Apart from some separation anxiety issues and an occasional urge to bolt out the door and book it as far as he could, CB was by all accounts an easy first dog: more like a low-effort cat than anything else.

Slowly Falling Apart

Over time, the health issues increased. Intermittent but predictably regular upset tummy. Bad gums, bad teeth. Random gooey skin lesion. Eye ulcers. Since October, we've been averaging 2-3 unplanned vet visits a month — many incurring some hefty bills. We'd take out another credit card, find another financing plan, but it adds up. So does the emotional toil on the family; so does the anxiety toll on the dog.

You start to think about quality of life for the dog, you know? He'd had a few teeth removed to sew up his gums after they kinda detached and fell apart from his jawbone — so he couldn't chew anything hard. Couldn't even chew a tennis ball, which was the only toy he took interest in anymore. Couldn't have any fun treats like peanut butter or other soft chews, as his tummy would have bad flare-ups that usually ended up with him attached to an IV bag. After finally settling in and learning to play well with Atlas, Charlie Brown started to get pretty irritable whenever Atlas got frisky.

He still loved running around outdoors, and was in otherwise great health.

I can't tell you how guilty that makes me feel, even now.

Moving to Waltham

Before we left Orlando, there were so many crisis moments in emergency vet offices where Niko and I talked about how long he could ride this roller coaster. CB obviously was not a fan of vet visits: loved the staff, but was notably anxious and panicky when separated from us, and he had grown very loathe to the process of poking, prodding, and whatnot.

Shortly after moving to Waltham (he was a champ in the U-Haul), Charlie Brown had a severe colitis flare-up. He was losing so much fluid and was growing very lethargic over the day. Vets are hard to get into these days: with the sweep of "pandemic puppy" adoptions, the vet industry as a whole is saturated with demand, and practices are responding as best they can. There were just no emergency clinics available to us within 20 miles, except one that noted "we have no availability, but you can come and wait, and we might be able to see you in 4 or 5 hours." So we did.

It was a very late night. Charlie Brown came home with us with another round of the same antibiotics he'd been taking almost regularly since December for his assorted ailments, and some probiotics. The next day, CB seemed a bit better and brighter, and Niko and I went into the city for part of the day. We came home to find he'd had an accident, but it was just... blood. So so much. And he looked so in pain, so ashamed, so guilty, so anxious.

So we went back to the vet ER. It was another very late night. I didn't know how many of these late nights we could afford; neither of us knew how many of these late nights it was fair to expect Charlie Brown to endure.

Camping Analogy, and a Best Last Day

When you're off on a long hike, and you see daylight start to fade as the sun begins to set, you begin to think about finding a good place to set up camp for the night. It's abysmal to do this after the sun has already gone down: where you could have had preparation and structure, you have chaos by flashlight.

A dog's life is in your hands. You're his whole world: all food, adventure, pampering, challenge, treatment, and care come from you. More than anything, we wanted Charlie Brown to have a peaceful, restful life. Now that we started thinking about it, we wanted to be able to give him a peaceful, restful passing as well: not as the climax of another overnight crisis with injections and yelps and beeps and cowering and anxiety and fear, but in the still quiet of familiar sounds and smells.

His very last day was a great one. Fresh Pond in Cambridge: a massive stroll around a colossal lake with an absurd bounty of new smells, kind people, happy dogs, and a brisk New England breeze. He got to swim in a little side pond — that boy lived for jumping into random lakes. He ran around the broad field that is Kingsley Bowl, chasing a thrown ball the very very farthest his sad pop could throw it — and he brought it back. We bought him a steak. We told him how much he brought to our lives.

And then we waited.

Lap of Love is a sort of home delivery service of dignified passing for pets. There's more to say on that hour than I care to pen, but throughout the procedure, we never left him. Charlie Brown passed enveloped in our arms and laps and sobs and hugs.

The Day After, and the Day After That

The rest is just thoughts. Your head starts to feel like a coffee shop where your grief comes in, sits at a table with you, and unloads. You nod, listen, and wish them well. I hope I can keep processing this way — I find it helpful, and less overwhelming.

I wish he had been able to play with his tennis ball more. Since his jaw surgery — even out on Kingsley Bowl, nearly a month and a half after he should have been fully healed — any kind of chewing would cause renewed bleeding and pain.

I wish we had hugged him more. But truth be told, he didn't like hugs. They made him uncomfortable. So we gave him a hand to lay his head on, or a knee for him to pop his head upon, as often as he liked.

There were so many times I felt inconvenienced by owning a dog at all. They weren't the majority, but... now each remembered time feels like a splinter of selfishness.

I miss how familiar the back of his neck felt under my hand, just behind the ears, where the waves of fur meet and crash and make a long cowlick of foof and fluff.

His happy smile and his stressed smile were very similar, but you could still tell which was which.

I loved being there for him in thunderstorms.

When you think about it, we sort of were hospice care for him. We weren't his original owners; we just wanted the rest of his life to be painless and fulfilling. He had so many trust issues when he first came to us. And in the end, he loved anyone he met.

I miss feeling around with my feet to make sure I don't step on him on my way to bed. I miss setting my feet on the floor as I wake, stooping down, and giving his head a good squishy rub.

He never did get to see Boston snow. I mean... thousands of dogs never get to see snow. But I was really looking forward to sharing that experience with him.

I wanted so badly to bring him to a point of health, and then say goodbye when he was feeling well. Seeing him have his Best Last Day, part of me whispered "murderer" with cold accuracy, and I have a hard time shaking it. He was so happy — but between jaw bleeding after playing with a tennis ball, seeing him scratch his eyes that were starting to ache with ulcers again... I know the unbridled happiness came with the reality of his declining health.

Atlas was the best thing that ever happened to that boy. I know Charlie Brown was at least a little disgruntled that his easy-going day-to-day had been interrupted by a chompy puppy, but Atlas brought out the young pup in CB: ripping palm fronds to shreds, playing tug, playing tag, meeting new dogs with confidence and assurance.

I used to get so mad at my mother-in-law for feeding Charlie Brown cinnamon donuts. I wish I'd given him more. Heck, I wish I'd given him more peanut butter. I'm frankly surprised he hadn't died of peanut butter overdose years ago.

Where Charlie's health had limits, we kept going with Atlas. That might mean taking Atlas out to play with a ball or a tug toy, because CB couldn't. It breaks my heart now to think of Charlie at the glass door just watching it happen, all because he physically couldn't play the same. I know he didn't understand that.

We took him out to Park Ave maybe once or twice. I wish it had been more. Truth be told, it was the same as the dog park, though: he was kind of a loner. Loads of people or dogs made him anxious. So while I might idealize the past and wish he had sat at our legs for lunch after lunch at an outdoor thoroughfare, ... I think he would have been miserable. I think he would have rather just curled up at the base of the couch and dozed while we watched a show.

He was so trusting. I could just drag him onto his back and onto my lap for cuddles and a good tummy rub. No complaints.

He looked so gaunt these past few months. I keep looking at earlier photos, and I really didn't realize just how grizzly and drawn he had become lately.

I miss seeing him randomly waiting for me outside the bathroom door — or curled up on the bath mat while I was in the shower, having sneakily nosed the door open and wanting my company while I was rinsing.

For his first few years with us, he was incredibly playful. I've been going through old videos — it's like going outside just blew his mind, and toys were either for cherishing daintily, or thrashing about and throwing to oneself and gnawing. He lost that after a time. He regained it a bit when Atlas joined the party. But it still faded. I'm sure that's inevitable, but it makes me sad to see the early vibrant puppy in those old recordings, and how different he had been in recent months.

I have rambled lol. I made an actual post cause it would be way too long and weird to just write that all out and then continue the other conversations we were having. I tagged you in it but if that isn't showing up it's here

Loona is the first kpop group I actually followed up with their music when I found out about them (I only followed one group before that and it's anime-related so yeah lol). That was in a time when I never cared about the people or personalities, I was there for the music only. I never went back to artists or groups cause I never felt the need to listen to all their songs (besides the aforementioned group), Loona changed that, so they have a special place in my heart. My Loona bias at first was Choerry, she was just so cute and caught my eye, I think it was also probably cause the subgroup OEC was my favorite as well, but then something change, and Olivia Hye knocked me over the head and I was never the same lmao. I still don't know all the girls but I'm trying not to fall too far down cause I don't have the money to really stan more than two groups. but to do keep an eye on Haseul, Yves, and Chuu too.

For ENHA they were the ones to get me into artists/groups personalities, so I really love them all for different reasons. If I had to pick one I would say Riki, my son boy. Compared to the others I think I go out of my way to support him more than the others when it comes to voting and that stuff. I would protect and fight others for the sake of Riki, Jay, and Sunoo since I feel like they aren't exactly treated the same either by the company or fans. but I usually say my biases are Heeseung, Jake, and Riki

Not me rambling again 💀 but yeah, I usually get to rest on the weekends. I'm glad you can find the happy moments cause it isn't always easy. I hope this week is not a rollercoaster for you unless we are talking about THRILL RIDE.

I. General Feel

Okay so this song is. It’s just not a good song let me put it like that. It’s an pop R&B song, obviously meant to be at the very least sexy. You have three men that are known for their sexy pop/R&B lyics and/or songs, and somehow two of them forgot how to be sexy? make it make sense. Where is the romance? the ambiance? the vulnerability? No not like that Chris Brown.

This sounds juvenile. If someone rapped this over a Nitti Beat back in 2012 I would have thought this was fire. That’s how fucking childish this is. This can’t be the same man you used to sing stuff like “if you didn’t know you’re the only thing that’s on my mind, cause the way i’m starin at you makes me wanna give it to you all night” or “I’ve been waiting all day to wrap my hands around your waist and kiss your face” or “I’ll get you hot I know you oh so well”. now are those groundbreaking lyrics? See this is what I was talking about in my other post, He completely misunderstands what it means to white a love song , but more than that, to be vulnerable. Saying you’re a cheating whore and begging for forgiveness in this manner is not actually apologizing for your actions, it’s just airing your dirty laundry.

If he wants to do that then fine I guess?? But I feel like he wasn't. Like, the idea totally reminds me of Charlene, Wherein Anthony Hamilton name drops his lover and begs her to come back to him. The thing about Hamilton’s song is that he doesn’t sound like a manipulative ass for one. Hamilton makes it clear there were several places he knows he fell short in the relationship, and in the end, he doesn’t make it out to be a callout post, but he does let her know that he intends to wait for her should she come back, and then promises to change his behavior. This is not that at all. When Beyoncé and Alicia Keys said Say you love me and Put it in a Love Song, This is not what they meant.

III. The way the song is sung

terribly Let me start there. Wtf was usher trying to do here. The lyrics were chringy, and so was the delivery. It felt choppy as hell. Like who is fucking to this? Asking for a friend. WHo is aroused by an usher vulva tat

we need to have words.

second Chis Brown sounds like a whiney piss baby I really hope no one actually paid for that song thinking they were getting a sexy R&B hit and got that.

Zayn sounds fine on this song, like the tone is overall bittersweet, but it matches the lyrics.

okay the last thing I want to talk about is the chorus. after hearing the verses It really doesn’t match. It’s a really basic premise I feel and Usher and CB felt like they were on another song in between the chorus. Like In Sex Room, Ludacris talks a really big game, and the chorus is really simple, but It’s literally all about what he plans to do in said “Sex room”, Usher like someone told him he was gonna be singing a sex song and then went back and put a line that tied to the song at the last minute if that makes sense?

and then CB....okay.

The last thing I wanna say about Chris Brown is I actually listened to the original song, thinking maybe the original was also trash. No actually? It’s not the best, not even by Chris B standards but its not bad like?? Who let him but out this remix monstrosity?

Anyway, I actually have a Sexy R&B playlist if you’re looking for something...better. Don’t get me wrong, they aren’t all romantic, but they’re damn sure sexy, and way better that wtf this song has going on

What Caused The Mass Panic At Newark Airport? Racism.

When an Alaska Airlines employee yelled "evacuate" at a major New York–area airport on Labor Day, one of the busiest travel days of the year, it sent 200 panicked people fleeing amid fears of a mass shooting attack.

Dozens of Port Authority police responded to Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey on Monday night around 8.30 p.m. after the female airline employee yelled for people to evacuate before setting off an emergency alarm. Initial reports said she believed two male passengers were acting suspiciously, and when she approached them they started running.

But the two Chinese-born men at the center of the incident told BuzzFeed News it all began as a case of racial profiling. In their first media interview, the men said they did not know each other, did not run away, and that it was the airline employee who had been acting erratically.

"It was a very shocking experience," said Han Han Xue.

Xue, 29, had spent the holiday weekend visiting friends in New York City and was waiting at Gate 30 to board his delayed Alaska Airlines flight home to San Francisco. As he stood "minding [his] own business," he said the Alaska Airlines employee in uniform walked into him from behind, pushing past. He brushed it off but moments later she returned, circling around where he was standing.

She then approached Chunyi Luo, a 20-year-old student standing near him. "Are you scared? Are you nervous?" Luo said she asked him.

Luo, who moved from Shanghai two years ago to study finance at a San Francisco college, said he told her he was feeling nervous because the flight was late. He said she told him that flights in the US were often delayed, but she stood "too close" to him so he stepped a few feet away.

Then she began asking Xue questions. She asked if he knew Luo (the two were strangers) and what his itinerary was. She then asked, "Why are you acting suspiciously?"

Xue said he struggled to know how to respond as the questions from the employee became more bizarre. "How much are they paying you?" he said she asked him, not clarifying who "they" were. "Did they give you a visa? Did they give your family a visa? Do you make a lot of money? Do you work on Wall Street? Are you on an American visa?" Xue said she asked him.

Born in China, Xue grew up in Canada, where he is a citizen, and works as a product designer at Lyft in California.

Luo said he could hear the woman asking Xue why he was acting suspiciously and heard her say the word "Asian."

Xue said at this point he felt like he was being racially targeted and harassed, so he walked about 6 feet away to join the passengers boarding the flight, hoping she'd bother someone else.

But she followed him, saying, "I'm onto you guys. The cops are already called."

"I couldn’t believe this was happening," said Xue.

He then watched the employee walk into the jet bridge at Gate 30, before emerging and starting to speak with gate agents. A gate agent then announced that boarding would be paused as there was an issue. Immediately afterward, the Alaska Airlines employee suddenly yelled, "Evacuate, evacuate!" and pressed an emergency alarm, said Xue.

"The moment it happened is really hard to describe," he said. "Everybody started running. It was the most insane scene I've ever been in or ever seen."

He said hundreds of people were tripping over each other, crying and screaming as they tried to flee. One man screamed at his female partner to drop her luggage so they could run faster. Xue ran with the crowd to another gate and escaped onto the tarmac.

Video posted on social media shows the chaos.

Michael Wolfmuller, 38, was walking toward the gate to board his flight home to San Francisco when he heard "evacuate" and saw people screaming and running in his direction.

"I heard the word 'shooter' when we were running," said Wolfmuller. He said he even heard glass breaking.

After the recent mass shootings in West Texas, in El Paso, and in Dayton, Ohio, Wolfmuller assumed he was next. "I thought I was going to get shot in the back," he told BuzzFeed News. "With everything that's been happening the last few months, that's pretty much what I was waiting for."

Luo didn't realize he had anything to do with the situation, and also believed there was a shooter. "I thought somebody had a gun," he told BuzzFeed News. "Everyone is running. I just followed them and escaped."

But once police arrived within a minute and started scanning the crowd, Xue said he felt compelled to come forward and identify himself. "I'm like, So, 90% chance I have something to do with this and it's escalated way too fast," said Xue.

"Intellectually, I know I didn't do anything wrong and that I can explain my way out of the situation," said Xue. "But the only time I was really anxious was when the cops first showed up."

He approached an officer and said that an Alaska Airlines employee told him she was calling police. Xue said the officer looked him up and down and then said "OK, we got the guy," into his two-way radio.

He said officers quickly surrounded him, and took him away from the crowd, asking him questions. One asked, "Where is your friend?" and Xue explained that he was traveling alone, but that the airline employee seemed to think he knew the young man standing next to him.

Police found Luo in the crowd and also started questioning him. Both Luo and Xue said police were calm and courteous to them. "Why do you think she thought you were suspicious?" asked one officer.

Xue replied that he didn't know "other than the fact we are both East Asian."

At one point, the Alaska Airlines employee came out of the jetway bridge and looked down below, where both men were speaking to police. "We got them motherfuckers,” she yelled, according to Xue.

Wolfmuller, who was busy helping a mother find her daughters on the tarmac, said he saw the employee return. "I heard the F-word and some screaming directed definitely at them," he said.

Once it was clear no one was in immediate danger and it seemed to be a misunderstanding, police let Luo and Xue go. All affected passengers had to be rescreened through security.

After several more hours waiting for their flight to San Francisco to take off, it was canceled and rescheduled for the following day, with passengers put up in a nearby hotel. Xue and Luo met for the first time at the hotel and shared their stories with each other and other passengers (the group even took a photo together).

An Alaska Airlines spokesperson told BuzzFeed News in an emailed statement they were investigating what had happened. "We understand the Newark issue was alarming and distressing for our guests and other flyers, and for that we are deeply sorry," said Oriana Branon. "We are conducting a thorough investigation of the incident and gathering witness statements to understand what exactly took place and why this happened."

No one from Alaska Airlines directly contacted Luo or Xue until after BuzzFeed News reached out to the airline on Thursday. Within hours, the airline emailed Xue. "I just found out who you are today," wrote the director of customer advocacy, which was seen by BuzzFeed News. "Mainly I wanted to check in with you and see what I can [do] to help." (Xue noted that he had left his name and contact information with an Alaska Airlines manager at the gate after the incident when he asked for an explanation.)

Alaska Airlines did not answer any questions about the employee who caused the commotion, saying it does not comment on personnel. CBS 2 reported that a source told them the woman has bipolar disorder and had missed her medication.

Lenis Rodrigues from Port Authority said the employee was questioned and released by Port Authority police, but would not comment on health issues. The Union County Prosecutor's Office said their office is aware of the incident and is in touch with authorities but that no decision had been made yet if any charges will be filed.

Xue said any health problems do not excuse the racism he experienced. "If she does have issues, it's on Alaska to make sure she's not placed in a position where she is responsible for the safety of others," he said.

He noted that East Asians aren't usually profiled in shooting or terror situations, but said he feared that "maybe there is a shift in Trump's America and all this [Chinese] trade war situation."

For both Xue and Luo, the situation was a horrible and stressful incident, compounded by Alaska Airlines refusing to even explain to them what had happened as media reports spread saying they'd been acting suspiciously and had run away.

"I'm so angry about that," said Luo. "I'm just so scared... it's horrible, it's awful."

"It's very uncharacteristic of me to go public like this about anything and it's causing me anxiety," said Xue.

But Xue's frustration at Alaska Airlines made him feel like he had no option. "At this point for all I know she still works at Alaska in the same position, and that alone is worrying," he said. "I don't want to perpetuate this idea that you can just throw this under the rug and that’s it."

I love how while yes Harry will promote his music, being on the top of the charts is just like one very small ingredient to his massive meal. Like he doesn’t care where he charts, he’s just having fun and making music that he loves. Cokie Roberts, who drew on her upbringing in a powerful political family to fashion a career as a leading Washington journalist for NPR and ABC News, bringing a tough, knowledgeable voice to the rough-and-tumble political arena at a time when few women had national profiles in the news business, died on Tuesday in Washington. She was 75.

ABC News, in a posting on its website Tuesday morning, said the cause was breast cancer.

Ms. Roberts was known to millions for both her reporting and her commentaries, moving easily among radio, television and print to explain the impact of world events and the intricacies of policy debates. And in books like “Ladies of Liberty: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation” (2008) and “Capital Dames: The Civil War and the Women of Washington, 1848-1868” (2015) she highlighted the often overlooked role of women in history, especially political history.

“Cokie Roberts was a trailblazer,” Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the House, said on Twitter, “who transformed the role of women in the newsroom & our history books as she told the stories of the unsung women who built our nation.”

Ms. Roberts, who joined NPR in the late 1970s and ABC News in 1988, carved out a career that served as an example to later generations of women in journalism.

“I’m proud as hell — proud as hell — to work at a news organization that has ‘Founding Mothers’ whom we all look up to,” Danielle Kurtzleben, an NPR reporter, said on Twitter. “God bless Cokie Roberts.”

In a statement, former President Barack Obama and the former first lady Michelle Obama called Ms. Roberts “a role model to young women at a time when the profession was still dominated by men; a constant over 40 years of a shifting media landscape and changing world, informing voters about the issues of our time and mentoring young journalists every step of the way.”

And President Trump, speaking to reporters on Air Force One en route to California from New Mexico, said of Ms. Roberts: “I never met her. She never treated me nicely. But I would like to wish her family well. She was a professional and I respect professionals. I respect you guys a lot, you people a lot. She was a real professional. Never treated me well, but I certainly respect her as a professional.”

If Ms. Roberts brought keen insight to her work, that was in part because she was a child of politicians, one who first walked the halls of Congress as a girl. Her father was Hale Boggs, a longtime Democratic representative from Louisiana who in the early 1970s was House majority leader. After he died in a plane crash in 1972, his wife and Ms. Roberts’s mother, Lindy Boggs, was elected to fill his seat. She served until 1991 and later became United States ambassador to the Vatican.

Ms. Roberts’s background gave her a deep respect for the government institutions she covered, and she didn’t hold herself or her journalism colleagues blameless for the problems of government. “We are quick to criticize and slow to praise,” she said in a commencement address at Boston College in 1994.

“But,” she told the crowd, “it’s also your fault.” Constituents, she said, needed to allow members of Congress to make the tough votes and “let that person live to fight another day.”

In an oral history recorded for the House of Representatives in 2007 and 2008, she expanded on the impact her childhood experiences had in shaping her views about America.

“Because I spent time in the Capitol and particularly in the House of Representatives, I became deeply committed to the American system,” she said. “And as close up and as personally as I saw it and saw all of the flaws, I understood all of the glories of it.”

“Here we are, so different from each other,” she added, “with no common history or religion or ethnicity or even language these days, and what brings us together is the Constitution and the institutions that it created. And the first among those is Congress. The very word means coming together. And the fact that messily and humorously and all of that, it happens — it doesn’t happen all the time, and it doesn’t always happen well, but it happens — is a miracle.”

Mary Martha Corinne Morrison Claiborne Boggs was born on Dec. 27, 1943, in New Orleans. She said that her brother, Tommy, invented her nickname because he couldn’t say “Corinne.”

She, her brother and her sister, Barbara, were immersed in political life, accompanying their father on campaign trips, attending ceremonial functions and listening to the dinner-table discussions that ensued when other political leaders visited the home.

“Our parents did not have the children go away when the grown-ups came,” Ms. Roberts said. “In retrospect, I’ve sometimes wondered, ‘What did those people think to have all these children around all the time?’ But we were around, and it was great for us.”

Although her father had considerable influence on her, so did her mother, who was active in furthering her father’s career, along with other women she came to know, like Lady Bird Johnson.

“I was very well aware of the influence of these women,” she said, adding, “I very much grew up with a sense, from them, that women could do anything, and that they could sort of do a whole lot of things at the same time.”

It was a theme she teased out in her 1998 book, “We Are Our Mothers’ Daughters.”

“For years my mother kept telling me that it’s nothing new to have women as soldiers, as diplomats, as politicians, as revolutionaries, as explorers, as founders of large institutions, as leaders in business; that the women of my generation did not invent the wheel,” she wrote. “In the past women might not have had the titles, she painstakingly and patiently explained, but they did the jobs that fit those descriptions.”

Ms. Roberts attended Catholic schools in New Orleans and Bethesda, Md., and graduated from Wellesley College in Massachusetts in 1964 with a degree in political science. In 1966 she married Steven V. Roberts, who was a correspondent then for The New York Times. Journalism was a largely male world at the time, something driven home to her when she went job hunting.

“In 1966 I left an on-air anchor television job in Washington, D.C., to get married,” she told The Times in 1994. “My husband was at The New York Times. For eight months I job-hunted at various New York magazines and television stations, and wherever I went I was asked how many words I could type.”

She eventually became a radio correspondent for CBS before joining NPR in 1978. (Sources give both 1977 and 1978 as her start year at NPR.) With her fellow newswomen Nina Totenberg and Linda Wertheimer, she began to change the journalistic landscape.

“As a troika they have succeeded in revolutionizing political reporting,” The Times wrote in that 1994 article. “Twenty years ago Washington journalism was pretty much a male game, like football and foreign policy. But along came demure Linda, delicately crashing onto the presidential campaign press bus; then entered bulldozer Nina, with major scoops on Douglas Ginsburg and Anita Hill; and in came tart-tongued Cokie with her savvy Congressional reporting. A new kind of female punditry was born.”

Ms. Roberts wrote a syndicated political column with her husband for many years. They lived in Europe for a time in the 1970s, and over the years she covered international stories, but Washington was her main turf. She covered Congress at a time when her mother was an increasingly important member of it, though that proved to be not as big a benefit to her professionally as it might have seemed, Ms Roberts said.

“She would never tell me anything,” she said in the oral history. “She was disgustingly discreet.”

Ms. Boggs died in 2013.

Ms. Roberts continued to provide segments for NPR even after joining ABC. The difference between the two, she said, was partly a matter of airtime.

“My average piece from the Hill for NPR would be four and a half minutes,” she said, “and my average piece for ABC would be a minute 15.”

At NPR, one of her regular segments was “Ask Cokie,” in which she used her vast knowledge of Washington, politics and history to answer listeners’ question on matters major, minor and obscure. One asked whether nuclear weapons could be launched by executive order only, absent Congressional authorization. One wanted to know where the phrase “lame duck session” came from.

In a recent installment pegged to the 100th anniversary of the House vote to approve the 19th Amendment, Steve Inskeep, the host, found himself interrupted by Ms. Roberts when he used the phrase “granting women the right to vote” to introduce the segment.

“No, no, no, no, no granting — no granting,” Ms. Roberts said in her characteristically emphatic style. “We had the right to vote as American citizens. We didn’t have to be granted it by some bunch of guys.”

She is survived by her husband; her two children, Lee and Rebecca Roberts; and six grandchildren.

Ms. Roberts received numerous honors, including sharing in several Emmy Awards. In 2008, the Library of Congress named her as a recipient of one of its “Living Legends” awards.

Ms. Roberts long had a front-row seat to history. In a 2017 interview with Kentucky Educational Television, she recalled a moment when she had to remind herself not to become jaded by that proximity. It was March 2013, and she was waiting in a cold rain for the Vatican smoke signal that would soon announce the selection of Pope Francis.

“Hundreds of thousands of people are pouring into St. Peter’s Square with the rain deluging them,” she said. “And my first reaction was: ‘Who are these people? What are they doing? That is crazy.’ And then I thought, ‘You jerk,’ to myself. ‘You are really not getting it. This is a moment in history that will be maybe the only time in all of these people’s lives that they have this front seat to history, and you’re so privileged you get it all the time.’”

But, she also reflected, big-stage moments give journalists only one part of the larger picture of their times.

“The individual interview with someone who is a mom in a shopping mall,” she said, “can tell you more about what’s going on in the world and how people feel about it than any of those grand things.”

Chan has had feelings for you from the first time he talked to you.

In the first video call the two of you had back in May 2018, he found himself enamored of you. He found you so beautiful, with your then chin-length dark brown hair and your milk-chocolate skin and pretty eyes, and the way you talked and explained things...he knew that you would be not only a great musician to have helping his group with their next few albums but a great person for him to have a romantic relationship with.

The romantic relationship thing fell flat when he found out that you were 17 years old turning 18 while he was 19 years old turning 20. That’s fine, he figured. We can be friends.

His impression of you only grew when he found out that you were basically fluent in Korean. “Why did you learn it?” he asked in genuine interest.

“I got into K-Pop when I was 10 years old in 2011. My first song was ‘Hot Summer’ by F(X) and not too long after ‘Hot Summer’ was released, ‘Be Mine’ by Infinite came out and by then I was sold.” you started.

“Ah, I remember when those songs came out! I was 13 years old and it was my first summer in South Korea after I became a trainee,” Chan reminisced. “But continue, sorry.” You smiled and waved off his apology.

“Don’t worry about it. But as I was saying, in my tween obsession, I took it upon myself to try to learn Korean so I could understand what the artists were saying in their songs. So, I started by watching lyric videos on YouTube and writing down the Hangul and the English translations and then I watched dramas like, um, Boys Over Flowers and The Heirs. By 2015, I could understand and read Korean but my pronunciation was weird so I joined some language exchange apps where I met some really nice people, as well as some really weird older guys, but the really nice people and I exchanged information and we would video chat and after a while my grammar and my speech improved.” you said. “That was a lot, I’m sorry.” you apologized. This time he waved you off.

“Don’t worry!” he laughed. “So how did you get into music?” he asked you.

“My parents have had me in piano lessons since I was 5 years old and vocal lessons since I was 7, but I stopped after I turned 14. My dad was very involved in music production. He used to write jingles for commercials and he helped make some demos for music made by smaller artists. I think my mom told me that he proposed to her with a song he wrote himself.” you laughed.

“But when I was 14, my dad got into a really bad car accident and he was stuck in a coma and was basically brain dead, so we...you know. That was a tough time for me but music, especially K-Pop helped me through it. My dad had a small home studio set up in a room in my house and before he passed, my dad taught me how to use everything. So I would do little projects where I made songs that I wanted to hear. The first project that a company decided to use was called ‘Eclipse’ and it was something I made in October 2016 and posted on a website where producers share demos or instrumentals, and production companies can buy them to use in songs. I was contacted in January 2017 by a newer company called Blockberry Creative who wanted to know if they could use my song for their upcoming girl group and I agreed.”

“Do you know what the song is now?” Chan asked. You nodded.

“It was released in May 2017 for the debut of the Loona member Kim Lip. They decided to keep the title the same.” you tell him. “Have you heard it?” you asked him. He shook his head.

“I’ll play it for you,” you said, pulling out your phone.

“Wait, no.” he says. You look back at your laptop in confusion.

“What?” you asked.

“Sing it.” he says.

“It would be better if I played it,” you say shyly. A smile spreads across Chan’s face.

“You can’t be shy now. We’ve already started the partnership and I’m going to need to hear your voice anyways, so why not start now?” he asks. You bite your lip in hesitation before sighing.

“Fine, but only because of your dimples.” you agree which causes Chan to laugh.

“My dimples?” he asks.

“Yes, now do you want to hear me sing or not?” you ask him in a fake serious tone.

“Go ahead,” he says.

“I’ll sing the Korean version since I forgot the lyrics to the demo. Are you ready?” you ask him, a little nervous.

“I can feel your nervous energy through the screen. It’s fine, don’t worry okay!” Chan reassures you. You sighed one last time before you began.

“It begins eclipse

In the shaded shadows where you and I meet

It happened in the fate

The light which is lighted by mind of us

Come closer to me

This is eclipse

I can’t keep my eyes off, so will you be with me continually?

Unforgettable eclipse, it’s destiny.”

Chan felt himself in even more awe. You were nervous for no reason. Your voice’s timbre was beautiful and your breath control and technique had to have been professionally learned.

“How would you feel about joining JYP Entertainment as a trainee?” Chan joked which caused you to laugh.

“I’ll think about it,” you laughed.

From that night in May, you and Chan created a great friendship.

You’ve both seen each other at your worst; Chan seeing you at your worst first. Finals week sucks.

Time differences were very hard. With Seoul being 14 hours ahead of Chicago, someone was always going to bed late while someone was waking up early. Each day that you had school, you would spend a couple hours doing homework before videochatting. Both of you were fatigued for a while but when school ended for summer break, you had much more time to work.

“Hey Chan?” you asked one night while the two of you were working on “M.I.A”.

“Hmm?” he hummed as he played a beat over and over again on the computer.

“Have you heard of this rap group from SoundCloud called 3RACHA?” you asked him. He smiled a bit.

“Yeah, why?”

“They’re pretty cool and they have really good songs.” you sighed.

“Yeah, I think they’re really good too,” you said.

“They haven’t made a song since like 2017 though,” you said before groaning. “They need to comeback so they can save the South Korean rap industry again!” you exclaimed. He laughed.

“I’m sure they’ll come back soon.”

“I wonder if they’re handsome,” you tell him, leaning back in your chair.

“I think they are, especially CB97,” he said, moving a sound clip to a part of a song he was recording.

“Oh, have you met them before?” you asked, leaning forward in your chair.

“Yeah, we’re pretty close,” he said.

“I’m gonna Google them to find a photo,” you declare.

“Hm, alright,” he responds.

“Th-ree-ra-chaaaa,” you mumble as you type in the search bar. “Oh, a ‘P.A.C.E’ lyric video!” you say excitedly. Suddenly, your eyebrows begin to furrow.

“CB Ninety- Chan you motherfu-You’re the fakest person I know! You’re literally the fakest person on the planet!” you yell.

“So are we hot?” he asks, a shit-eating grin on his face.

“Choke,” you say flatly, to which Chan laughs.

“Hey Chan, I got an email from this company called KQ Entertainment,” you told Chan one day via FaceTime in September.

“Oh, Ateez’s company! Changbin knows one of the members.” Chan says. “What did they email you about?”

“They want me to come to South Korea to work as a producer for Ateez’s next few albums. KQ will pay for my living expenses and everything.” you tell him. Chan’s head snaps to face you on his phone screen.

“Like...this South Korea? The one I’m in right now?” Chan asks dumbfounded.

“Uh, yeah,” you tell him.

“Have you talked to your mom about this?” Chan asks, trying to tone down his excitement in the event that you tell him that you can’t go.

“She says that I can go and my sister thinks that it’s a great idea...” you trailed off.

“Then why do you sound so sad?” Chan asked you.

“I visit my dad’s grave every two weeks. I have money saved up from birthdays, Christmas, Easter, royalties, the money from JYP for helping you guys out with I Am Who and I Am You and other odd jobs that I’ve taken up over the years and I can afford to fly to Korea but...I don’t know. I know that some people think of this as a job of a lifetime...but I just...I don’t know, Chan.” you sigh. “What should I do?” you ask him. Chan felt his heart hurt at your facial expression.

“I don’t know what I would do. If you want to come here, maybe take something of your father’s like a shirt or a photo of him,” Chan suggested. “Wouldn’t you be able to work from your house?” he asked.

“KQ feels like it would be more efficient if I lived there so I could be easily accessible and so time zones wouldn’t be an issue.”

“How badly do you want to go?” Chan asked you. You laughed slightly.

“It’s been my dream since my demo for ‘Eclipse’ was first used,” you tell him. “I hadn’t thought about it prior to my demos being used.”

“Follow your heart, (Y/N),” Chan tells you. “Do you hear me?” he asks you. You nod.

“I have to go soon, we have to start filming the music video for the title track that YOU helped me work on in SOUTH KOREA,” Chan said.

“Are you trying to influence me?” you laughed.

“Maybe a little bit,” he said. “Bang Chan, we need your for filming!” you heard a voice off-screen.

“I’ll be right there,” Chan said to the source of the voice.

“I’ll let you go, Channie. Thanks for listening.”

“Anytime, (Y/N),” he replies.

“Chan, one last thing!” you tell him.

“What?”

“You look really handsome with your curly brown hair.” you tell him.

“What what-” “See you later, Channie!” you say before hanging up.

He sighed, his cheeks reddening. Minho came up next to him. “Who were you talking to that has you so flustered?” he asked.

“No one,” Chan replied, sliding his phone into his pocket.

“Oh, it was (Y/N), wasn’t it?” Minho said, leaning closer to Chan.

“No,” Chan said unconvincingly.

“Yes, it was, you cradle robber!” Minho exclaimed.

“Are we talking about Chan having the fattest crush on Lav?” Jisung comes over, taking a sip from a bottle of water.

“No, we aren’t, and no, I don’t have a ‘fat crush’ on Lav,” Chan groans.

“Oh he totally has a crush on Lav, he’s a cradle robber.” Woojin said, standing up next to the forming group around Chan.

“I’m not a cradle robber!” Chan exclaimed.

“That’s totally something a cradle robber would say,” Jisung whispers to Minho who nods in agreement.

“I heard that,” Chan warned.

“What did (Y/N) say?” Changbin asked, coming up from behind Chan. Chan shifted a little bit, knowing his younger member’s feelings towards you.

“KQ Entertainment emailed her about coming to Korea and working on a few albums for their new boy group,” Chan said.

“So she’s coming here?” Changbin asked, excitedly. Chan relished in knowing he had the ability to change Changbin’s mood with a single phrase.

“She wants to but she isn’t sure if she can,” Chan says. Changbin’s happy mood changes into a dejected one. Jisung throws an arm around Changbin.

“Here’s the other cradle robber,” Jisung teases, poking Changbin’s cheek.

“I’m not a cradle robber,” Changbin exclaims, pushing Jisung off of him.

“That’s something a cradle robber would say,” Minho whispers.

“You guys are annoying, I’m going to go film,” Chan says, standing up from his chair.

“Make sure your scene looks nice for Lav!” Minho yells. Chan ignores him.

“Hey, Binnie, did your scene look good for Lav?” Woojin asks Changbin.

“Chan’s right, you guys are annoying,” Changbin says as he walks away in the opposite direction as Chan.

“I hope their rivalry doesn’t split us up,” Woojin says, crossing his arms as he looks between the two boys.

“Me too,” Felix agrees.

“Channie?” you say into your phone, your speech slurred from sleep. It was two in the morning after all.

“Lav? What’s wrong? Is everything okay?” Chan asked worried.

“I’m gonna go to Korea,” you tell him, your pronunciation a bit off.

“What?”

“I just had a dream that I went to Korea, and it was great and I feel like things would be just as great in Korea as they were in my dream. I’m gonna go to Korea.” you tell him.

“What about your dad?” Chan asked you. You sighed.

“I’ve gone four years without him. It’ll be tough, but I’ll be able to go four more years if I have you and the rest of the guys by my side.” you tell him. Chan smiled.

“Why are you telling me this in Korean?” Chan laughed.

“I wanted to see if I could speak Korean while half-awake and I feel like what I’m telling you is more meaningful when it’s said in Korean.” you slur.

“Go to sleep, (Y/N). We can talk later.” he says. You hum in agreement.

I’m impressed.

Lethal Weapon’s boycotting kidlets really stuck to their guns. Within the respective Fox Bubble, it’s been a horrific failure. Their female demographic is in shambles and I’m actually side-eyeing their digital hoorah and wondering if that’s the source, but I’m not plugged in enough to know.

It’s been a while since I’ve heavily fixated on ratings outside of the CW because fandoms within the CW have had their heads screwed on so ass-backwards about the CW bubble and ratings in general it’s been a full time job, but the last few years of decline in ratings abroad haven’t failed to horrify impress.

Please note since tumblr doesn’t date posts, this is numbers as of 5/5/19 with targets based earlier in the year for the 2017-2018 season, end of Fall through Spring season, the cusp of summer season starting.

For example, NBC’s Target is currently around a 0.68 this year, but they still took ages to consider on Champions, that settled at a 0.4 last year. Target is general goal level, not necessarily cancel time, but tipping below puts you at into bubble edge territory and eventually, you’ve popped your bubble, depending on the lean.

I already knew WB-CW products are around 0.23 and CBS-CW are around 0.19 as their target. What’s slipped my notice is only CBS Comedy and NBC drama have their general target zone at the 0.7x range. Fox is the outlier at 0.84/0.87. That’s pretty freakin horrifying.

Like that’s considered average performance on the Big 4 right now. Hell, Abby’s on NBC is pulling about a 0.4x average and some people are thinking if they hold onto it, with as long as NBC deliberated over Champion’s 0.4 last year, they could actually be an underdog for renewal since the bar has already dropped since then.

On a big 4 network.

YIKES, DAWG.

To put this into scale, in the previous season (2017-2018 season, or in SPN standards, season 13), the CW line was around 0.32 for WB and 0.24 for CBS products; All other networks were riding the 0.8 to 0.9 line with some expecting close to a 1.0 for their targets. Now compare that a year later.

To scale this, have this chart from this old article (link) showing the slide from 2003-2014 for the big 4.

You’ll also find it talking about a lot of the things I talked aboutabout “is TV really dying” and “why are numbers falling” and all that hot stuff. Funnily, they too also source Spotted Ratings, which I often source -- and which idiots take slang terms like “It’s very ‘inside baseball’” and turn into “you use baseball stats reeeee!” because people apparently don’t understand idioms. Protip: It’s a science and an art, it’s a sport, and if you don’t get the mechanics, Spotted Ratings can be dizzying to navigate because of how it puts laser focus breakdowns on the multifaceted parts of understanding how ratings work and what impacts them.

Given, this article was on the early end of the digital boom, so talks more about cable’s impact than digital -- which is also valid! You may remember that in my giant explanations that the CAUSES for TV decline have drifted (broadcast TV diversification, early satellite/cable, expanding cable quality, the conversion box mandate throwing people into that universe by force, digital, etc)

But there you go, that was the averages on the years. That includes highs, lows, stuff that got cancelled, daytime TV, primetime TV, and so forth. So when you guys hear me talk about the decline of TV across the board, there it was, and it hasn’t gotten better. In fact, we’re plummeting harder as digital further replaces classic.

2017, which is where I cycle back to the year I started talking about this in, and so on.

But even tapping out of paying more attention abroad has made this all the more dizzying to tune back into SINCE then and go, summarily, “What the fuck? How are shows floating on NBC at 0.5?”

So just remember, in the year of our premiere, networks were AVERAGING 3.5-4.0. Again, that includes highs, lows, stuff that got cancelled, daytime TV, primetime TV, and so forth.

That said,

This mythical golden age? You know how I talk about Season 1 averaging a 1.9? That’s in its True metric based on timeslot. You know, the people who like to talk shit claim is “baseball stats.” Do you want to know what it’s real rating was? 1.4. So take a look at that, and take a look at all the surrounding networks. It ranked 165th on the calendar year out of 215 shows, in raw, unbridled numbers, have a citation. ‘Bout a 3.85 average on the big 4. Running about 2 and 3/4ths higher than SPN.

Season 2′s true numbers? a 1.1 while the big 4 are at about *checks* a 3.58 and *checks* 216th rank. Again, big 4 running about 3 1/3x higher than SPN. Season 3? 1.0. Welcome to 2007-2008 season. *scrolls back up to chart* Big 4 were running a 3.33 by then. Or about 3 1/3 times what SPN was panning. Notice that slide?

Now do you notice a change 2008-2009? Season 4? Let’s see where the big 4 were at *leafs back up* ‘Bout a 3.11. Compared to the 3.85 a few years prior. Now SPN’s raw demo 18-49 was at. *leaf, leaf* Ah yes, a 1.1. Meaning That while the big 4 have slid SPN automagically stabilized and grew, hence the EW article in season 4 about “otherworldly gains in viewership.”

And then came S5, which people who didn’t understand ratings fixated on the raw viewer drop but lo, behold, where were we in season 5, a 1.2! We went up. Again. While the big 4 were averaging... *checks* A sneeze above 3.0. Like 3.05ish. Or, summarily, the big 4 averages were only 2 1/2 times SPN’s averages. A better ranking than it had ever been. And climbed to rank 123.

Now, I’m not gonna run through the whole course of this. I don’t need to embarrass Sera Gamble all over again. What I can say is season 6 dropped into the toilet at rank 209. Season 7 tried to fight back to a grand whopping 176. Season 8 bounced back to rank 152. Or, summarily, almost on par with S5. We bounced this bracket (141, 156) until season 11 where we hit rank 131. Season 12? Rank 132.

You wanna know where true finals were considered with SPN S13 once deadline reported in? 0.8. Not the numbers you all were crowing about. Here you go. (Link) Ctrl+F SPN. Oh look it’s at 126. Because Nielsen and anyone with a brain uses common sense and applies TST to ratings now because it’s not 2005 anymore you kumquats.The live was still a solid 0.55 ALONE.

Did I mention that SPN has been a top digital contender since S11 in the top 20 since? A metric that didn’t even exist in old era?

Okay so fine, what’s the Network Averages now that you’re banging on about how awful they are and being horrified? Let’s check TVByTheNumbers! (Link)

O...Oh. 0.825 would be the average of the other four. Oh... So SPN’s 0.41 of this year is... just... half. Of the big four averages. *scrolls back up* But... but the golden days! The... golden days where SPN ran at less than 1/3 the big 4 network ratings. Not 1/2. Protip: 1/2 is more than 1/3.

THERE WERE NO SPN GOLDEN DAYS OF OLD SERIES HIGH RATINGS. THIS IS WHY KRIPKE TALKED ABOUT THE GODDAMN BUBBLE.

And if you follow the CHAIN of this conversation, why he said season 4 was when he started being able to sleep at night and season 5 was when they were revitalized, thanks largely to [gestures at Misha Collins on SDCC panel] this guy. THIS IS WHY.

But -- but -- quality! That’s wild. Rottentomatos S1 reported, even when fresh and new, a 69% audience approval rating with an average 6.8/10. Since then its cult fandom has climbed it to 88%, which, understandable, but its critic meter has fallen it to 67%. S14, still fresh is pulling... 77% audience approval rating. And a 90% on the critic meter. Wait! Well let’s see what old fandom did. Oh... critic meter S13 100%, audience 80% with 12 less years to boost it. Can’t boost how savage the critics were on S1 compared to later seasons, though.

*keeps filing* there has to be a newish season here people hated! Hey, I hated S12! And it-- *flips* got 79% audience approval and 86% critic meter. OKAY BUT FINE LET’S LOOK AT -- *flips* Oh, that’s super weird, It’s all really solid numbers with a literally visible gradient that can be history tracked with immediate recorded reports versus years later things boosting them over a decade. Wild. And everything still newly classing “Nailed it.”

THERE WERE NO SPN GOLDEN DAYS OF OLD SERIES.

This is purely a fandom hallucination not rooted in any level of reality.

And that? That’s just why seeing the slide blew my mind. Because I’ll be honest -- I DID think S14 was mildly down compared to S13. Not like, terribly. Not enough to cause a crisis. But enough it ticked on my radar thinking, I think we just slid beneath this retention line we’ve been managing to hold onto, holy cra- oh, no, nevermind. Fucking NBC is running a 0.5. Holy shit.

NBC was running a 3.3 when SPN S1 ran a 1.4 and a 3.0 when SPN S3 ran a 1.0. Now, NBC is running a 0.5 while SPN runs a 0.4. Do the math folks.

Song Analysis: Convoy by C.W. McCall - FTWD

Good morning! Remember I said that I wanted to say more on the trucker song they listened to last week on Fear? Well, here it is! I’m basically just going to give you the lyrics and highlight the symbols. They’re things I and others on TD have talked about for a LONG time. I’ll also try to link to discussions of these symbols if you want a refresher, but I don’t really want to repeat all the info for each symbol. If you’ve followed my theories for any length of time, you should be fairly familiar with them. If not, you can always click the links. 😉

I guess my biggest take away with this song is that they chose it specifically for how well it ties into the show and how heavily it references the symbols they use in the show all the time. And that just makes us happy, you know?

So, the song is Called Convoy by C.W. McCall. It was a big deal back in 1975 when it hit number one on both country and pop charts.

In terms of what the song is about, it basically tries to show a dialogue between truckers on the road who speak to each other via CB radios. Already right there we have an interesting tie to the show. While they predominantly use walkie talkies, we have also seen many CB radios in both TWD and FTWD. In the latter, we saw them this season at the denim factory and at the gas station in 5a.

The other thing you should know about this song is that it uses a lot of CB slang. So if you just read through the lyrics and you’re NOT a trucker of CB radio enthusiast (which I’m guessing is most of us) it won’t make much sense to you. Go HERE to get an interpretation of the CB slang and it will make way more sense.

Here are the full lyrics. I put the bold text in to draw your attention to those words/phrases:

By the time we hit that Chi-town, Them bears was a-gettin' smart: They'd brought up some reinforcements From the Illinois National Guard. There's armored cars, and tanks, and jeeps, And rigs of ev'ry size. Yeah, them chicken coops was full'a bears And choppers filled the skies. Well, we shot the line and we went for broke With a thousand screamin' trucks An' eleven long-haired Friends a' Jesus In a chartreuse micra-bus.

Verse 4:

Well, we laid a strip for the Jersey shore And prepared to cross the line I could see the bridge was lined with bears But I didn't have a dog-goned dime. I says, "Pig Pen, this here's the Rubber Duck. "We just ain't a-gonna pay no toll." So we crashed the gate doing ninety-eight I says "Let them truckers roll, 10-4."

[CB radio chatter] Ah, Ten-Four Pig Pen what's you're Twenty Omaha Well, they oughtta know what to do With them hogs out there, fer sure Well, mercy sakes good buddy We gonna back on outta here So keep the bugs off yer glass And the bears off yer...tail We'll catch you on the flip flop This here's the Rubber Duck on the side We gone Bye, bye

Okay, so like I said, read HERE for a complete interpretation of the CB slang in the song, but it’s worth mentioning a few things that are important. The song is about a bunch of truckers who basically stage a “rebellion” by tearing up their log books, driving cross country, and busting through a bunch of police blockades in the process.

The conversation is mostly between three main people: “Rubber Duck,” “Pig Pen,” who has a truck full of hogs, and “Sodbuster.” I’m assuming those are their CB call signs. Here are posts on Rubber Ducks and Pigs. I don’t have one on Sodbusters, but that’s basically slang for a farmer, and just makes me think of Hershel.

So the song also mentions bears a lot. Guess what a bear is slang for in CB lingo? A cop! Specifically highway patrol. That’s because they often wear hats similar to the Smokey the Bear mascot.

So when the “bears get smart,” it means the cops are being resourceful trying to stop the convoy. Going hunting for a bear metaphorically means hunting for cops. And, just a point of detail, in the song, they’re not REALLY hunting for cops. Rather, they’re doing things that will draw the cops toward them because their activities are illegal. Just wanted to point that out.

And the “bear in the sky” is a—wait for it!—HELICOPTER! Yup! A police helicopter that’s also following them.

See why this song made us excited! It screams so many TD symbols that we’ve talked about for a long time, including Grady cops. If you read the Wikipedia I linked above, even the trucks in the convoy (mentioned in slang, so you’ll have to look it up to see what they are) have some significance. There’s the pig truck, of course, but also a REFRIGERATED boxcar truck, which works well with @frangipanilove’s refrigeration/Sirius theories.

I highlighted the “11 Long-haired friends of Jesus” for two reasons. 1) Jesus/bible reference. 2) 11 is also significant. Me, @wdway and @frangipanilove were talking about this on Sunday. If you read the theory I re-posted yesterday (also by @frangipanilove) I’m sure you understand. Oh, btw, Omaha, Nebraska is mentioned in the “CB chatter” part of the song as well.

I also highlighted the “hammer” in the first verse because we saw the hammer symbol brought up a lot last week. The young guy at the end used a broken hammer to break into the generator room at the gas station before Logan showed up to shoot up his three wheel bike.

And then it caught my attention that on the S10 special, Tyreese’s hammer was given away in the special drop box. I’m feeling like there’s something significant about this symbol right now. And the only thing we an really connect it to is Tyreese, who died in the episode after Beth was shot and whose death hallucination, Beth was in. Just saying.

Also notice the moon and bridge symbols. I don’t think I need to explain those. Plus some others I highlighted on principle: some eights, some fives, cars, tanks, a reference to suicide and explosives, etc.

And I maintain what I said in my original analysis. If hunting a bear = hunting a cop, and what character was most heavily associated with cops? That would be Beth, because of Grady. Then hunting a bear suggests hunting Grady cops (or drawing them out) which has to lead to Beth eventually. And I have no idea when. Maybe not even this season. Who knows? But what the group is doing now by helping people will probably eventually lead to it in some way.

And then we had that thing Lenny said on TTD about how something really unexpected will happen this season. Something no one will see coming. Juuust saying. ;D Thoughts?
