I resized my canvas so it had more pixels does anybody know. how to like. resize the lines so that they're less pixels if that makes sense? like my lines got bigger and less crisp when I made the canvas bigger and I would like to make them thinner and crisper without having to reline the entire thing with a smaller brush

,,,,is there a faster way to line a selection? faster than drawing it on freehand in a layer behind the selection? because if so I would REALLY like to know

i tried corel painter yesterday. honestly its pretty good. the brush engine is satisfying for me to use.
but teres no fucking way in hell this thing costs 429 dollars . thats robbery.
what's funny is that the performance is ASS. you're asking for 429 dollars (200 to update from an older version) with such bad performance? free/much cheaper programs have better performance. this is embarrassing man. i wonder if corel painter is on its way out so they don't care to price it that way or if they're actually making bank and people are buying it. btw they're selling shitty brushpacks for 100+ dollars. its so shameless i have to laugh...
the performance is so bad that even though the program says i have a good pc to use it it lags EVERY TIME i change the brush size. doesn't matter how big the canvas is. it still lags on 200x200 px 100dpi canvas. every single time i change the brush size i have to wait a few seconds for the program to adjust or it will ignore the brush strokes im making. this is genuinely infuriating. lets just say if i paid 430 bucks for this i would be PISSED. apparently the cpu usage spikes every time you change the brush size though i havent checked this myself. i have to laugh man
also its annoying i can't "rasterize" the impasto layer. i just want to actually paint over the 3d impasto thing but i can't find an option to do that anywhere. so basically i need to copy the layer into another program and then back into corel to paint over it. 430 dollars btw lol
straight up krita is a better program by miles and its free. sure corel has pretty robust features but it also can't handle changing the brush size.

so one of the technical bits i challenged myself with this gunter/corrin doujin was to:
(a) figure out an efficient process for professional multi-page artistic works in linux/true OSS programs - from ideation all the way to printer hand-off.
and
(b) a process that fit well with my brain and kept me from spinning my wheels endlessly redoing pages. it's a common problem with longer projects (aka why you see reboots of webcomics all the time, and also why i haven't been able to get "what greater sin" out for three years cuz i sucked at this lol).
why the focus on process though?
after mastering a certian degree of technical proficiency. it's what separates the hobbyist artists from the pros. not to toot my horn, but i'm quite good at project management process at work, and about two years ago it dawned on me to take some of that learned knowledge and actually apply it here if only to save eyestrain/wrist-strain time.
work lazier smarter, not harder etc.
before i get into the process outline, there's two programs that are doing the heavy lifting since i gave them a trial run with the last anthology and they worked great in tandem. (both cost no money and are available on all major OS's btw)
krita, my main drawing program. sketching/inking/speech bubbles/coloring/vector stuff can all be done here.
libreoffice writer - basically microsoft word for linux. i use it for arranging multiple pages, reordering, and exporting as .pdf to give to the printer (while amazing at rendering, krita can't export as pdf or show multi-pages)
so!
process wise, it occurred to me not too long ago that i needed to consolidate my multi-page creative projects into 3 major gates.
thumbnail sketches
proof of concept layout
"last 10" final
thumbnail sketches
thumbnails are a common concept in comics, but they're great for print front/back matter too. thumbnails ain't here to look pretty, their sole purpose to get the idea from your noggin to on the page.
Tumblr media
here's a completely unaltered spread from my journal with a ton of thumbs and notes for this doujin.
so what's the kind of stuff i think about with thumbs?
how panels in a comic fit together with the major emotional beats + line of action. does the eye follow the pages naturally? do you "feel" the emotional impact?
does the compositions work with each other? negative/positive space, weight on top or bottom or diagonally, etc. do the pages feel claustrophobic or too empty? do they breathe?
decorative framing elements that reflect the tone you want + how they generally lead the eye across the page
random notes about overall tone or potential future pages
etcetc
at this point i import that digitally, and start drawing a proper sketch off of it.
fast forward from that sketch to:
"proof of concept" layout
i'm calling this proof of concept instead of a draft as they serve different purposes. a draft is a half-finished work you can just screenshot and show to anyone for feedback (like comms). proof of concept here is showing a certian level of completeness across draft pages to measure consistency.
lack of consistency is the mind killer killer of comics.
proof of concept is specifically meant to nip the 'fizzled out halfway' issues in the bud. it's to show you how cool it looks altogether already, but also shed a light on problem areas that are potentially popping up on the earlier side, so there's less time wasted.
this is a little premature in the process for a proof of concept screenshot, but you get the idea here in a later strip, shown here as screenshots imported into libreoffice writer:
Tumblr media
another reason that made libreoffice writer essential is the accurate 2-page spread view. between that, being able to resize the page to whatever you need, and the very easy pdf exporter (with customizable compression), i don't know if i could do this kind of project here.
now, backing up - what kinds of consistency are we checking for here?
does the inking/coloring style change noticeably in a jarring way?
is there one comic strip that the pacing/paneling sucks in comparison to the others? or feels awkwardly added in tone and perhaps better saved for a different project?
is there one panel within a sequential series that's torturing you? what's the best way to throw it out and redo it even faster?
do the front/back matter support the meat of the inside in a clever, on-tone way?
did you accidentally change the font halfway through after you liked your new shiny toy? which one works better?
etc
keep in mind we're not just checking the consistency in one strip, it's for the book as a whole.
and then lastly,
"the last ten" final
"the last ten" is a mental concept i've used for the last ten years for single comic pages. it's especially tempting to noodle over endlessly making one comic page perfect, when you could have done ten reasonably good ones in the same time, and so i made this my last step making IC pages.
once when you approach a level of reasonably done, but kinda hate the page and are procrastinating on getting it out, stop, rest your eyes overnight, and list the last ten minor things you'd change.
once when you've changed those? out the door it goes.
i'm gonna switch to a different project but here's a good example of a "last ten" stage applied to illustrations when i did fallen!gunter's FEH mockups.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
looks pretty complete, right? WRONG :D
i can't remember the exact last ten i used, but it was something like:
too much of one specific glowy purple on both, i wanted more contrast with the red glow + "water" texture
needed more effects on the first image to better match FEH's aesthetic
change Leigh's credits after they got a chance to see it and give the thumbs up
knee/shin on left looks unfinished painting wise, clean up
missing chest plate silver decorations on left, clean up
etc
this is the last hail mary check to hack your brain into being satisfied with the page. you've had your say, onwards to the next one.
now, you can also have an additional 'last ten' for the project as a whole. but it's especially critical for comic pages to help keep the momentum/tempo/pace going.
anyway!
we'll see how all of this actually works in practice depending on how fast i can get this doujin out. :)

I love Your drawings! Especially Pearlshipping ones! I also missed the 2016 time When pearlshipping had many fanarts, analysis, but nowadays there is none! But you inspire me to satisfy my own pearlshipper inside me! No matter the trails to learn to draw I will do it for pearl! Satohika the best! Hyper Fixation is surely a thing!!
Btw an out of content question what do you use to draw? I have seen many use csp, or krita, or firealpaca or etc.
we got another one boys
Tumblr media
No but seriously this ask made me so happy??!! To think my silly shippy drawings could get someone into art is making me so emotional QwQ This is the best, I could never predict this 💕💕💗💖💕
Onto the program thing, I personally use Paint Tool Sai for most of my work (I just adore it's pen sensibility. no other program gets it so close to real pencils like sai for me), but I do recommend Krita as well! It's free and I often use it for animations or paintings and I find that the pen sensibility there is pretty much similar to Sai's!

Fresh new art for 2020 with my new account (´ω`♡)but this one is digital.
This is a fan art btw, took me like 1 and a half days to finish this and it turned out great! If you want to see more of my work, please stay tuned!
The main reason why I have deleted my other account is for personal matters.
"Cory Kenshin and Dashie playing Granny Simulator"
Original Video (for inspiration): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by8yKb03YgA&t=608s (the video that keeps making me laughed even i watched it for 10x already lmao)
What i used: Krita and Wacom Intuos Comic and a sparkle of imagination with a little craziness

me trying to make a gif part 2 (thrilling finale, buildup ver.)
ok good news and bad news: good news being withheld for Spoilers (not that it’s that hard to guess anyway lol), bad news explained first bc, chronologically, it is first
so yesterday i mentioned in the tags of that post that i had seen that krita has an animation feature so i was gonna try importing the frames into that and then exporting it as a gif. easier said than done, as it turns out
i started by opening the file i made yesterday with 62 layers as the frames and importing that into krita, which worked fine (i didn’t know you could actually open .psd files in clip stuido ((this typo is so fucking stupid it made me laugh so im leaving it)) and krita, so that’s pretty neat, i wonder if it works the other way around too) but i ran into problems when i tried to convert those layers into frames in an animation. because, like, the layout of the program has the layers displayed in one tab, and the animation timeline in another, like so:
Tumblr media
(do u like how im using pictures now, i thought of that yesterday after i published the other post and realized hey, visual reference would probably make my plight a lot easier to understand!! so enjoy these educational diagrams from now on)
so my goal was to get the frames from the layers into the timeline, and i still don’t know if i did it right bc lbr krita is not very intuitive at all,,.,, i mean i watched a video tutorial abt how to animate in krita which was v helpful (it’s the one by jesse j james on yt fuckin SHout out) but it was about animating from scratch, not importing an animation you’ve already done elsewhere
so like, the way krita’s animation thing works, from what i could piece together as i bumbled my way around w/ it, is that each layer in the layers tab is a separate timeline in the,,, timeline tab
Tumblr media
i want them all to be in the same timeline, not separate ones, and there’s no way to combine them in the timeline tab bc doing that just overwrites whatever layer you’re pasting it down onto, and also if you define the number of frames for that timeline (62 for this project) it just puts the single image of that layer for all of the frames instead of just one of them, so you’d have to go through and delete all the other frames you don’t want it to be, which would be such a fuckin pain
so i found a workaround, which is so tedious that it can’t be the right way to do it, but basically i started w/ layer 1 and defined 62 frames & then emptied frames 2-62, like this
Tumblr media
(that blue box is the frame, btw, even tho it says 0, which actually kind of annoys me like why doesn’t it start the first frame on 1????)
from there i went up to layer two and selected that in the timeline, but for some reason the frame doesn’t show up automatically?
Tumblr media
& i couldnt fuckin figure out how to make it into like, an Official Timeline Layer or whatever tf bc like, u see on layer 1 how theres that little lightbulb-looking icon on the right? that’s for turning on onion skin which only applies when you actually have frames with things drawn on them, so basically layer 2 in the layers tab has a drawing but in the timeline it doesn’t?
i didn’t find out what the actual reason for this is or how you’re /supposed/ to make the frame appear in the timeline, but what i did was right click on layer 2′s timeline & select “create blank frame” which magically made the frame i want appear
Tumblr media
but it’s on top of the layer 1 frame, and i want it to be the frame after. also it’s still in a different timeline. this is the only easy fix in this whole damn process, u can literally just click & drag the frame from layer 2 to layer 1 and put it wherever u want on the timeline
Tumblr media
and then u just delete layer 2 and that’s it, frame transferred!! then i just had to do that for 60 more layers and after [unspecified amount of time but it was a fuckin while ok] my timeline looked like this!
Tumblr media
(the gaps near the end are held frames, to save me time so i didn’t have to copy a bunch of frames that were exactly the same)
krita is great because as far as i know ur animation can have an unlimited number of frames, at the risk of your own pc’s processing power, which is a definite upside to SOME expensive art programs i know (clip studio, i’m talking abt csp) and u can pick the frame rate too (cough photoshop elements 5.0 even tho u dont technically have an animation feature & it’s a miracle u can even make gifs at all) so once i finally got all the frames situated all nice and in order like on the same timeline, playing it was great! played at the right speed, looped perfectly, it was a dream come true right
well, time to export it as a gif
ha
haha
hoooo oo  o
so u got 2 options for exporting ur animation, u can either hit “export,” which lets u save it as different file types, one of which being gif, or you can hit “render,” which gives you gif and video options
Tumblr media
well
i tried export first, bc that seemed like a good idea, but the “””gif””” it made was distinctly not a gif, despite its claim to be one?? this is what i got:
Tumblr media
notice: 1. it is not moving, and 2. the black bars to the sides?? those are supposed to be transparent. they’re transparent in the file i made so why didn’t they register as transparent in the export, when gifs have transparency capabilities??
Tumblr media
so That was some real live bullshit but i still had the “render” option, right? export was wrong, so rrender must be the correct option to go to that will produce the results i am wanting to see produced in front of me like a silver dinner platter with a correctly functioning gif under the lid, that’s what i want to see and “Render Animation...” is gonna Give me that silver platter righWRONG ok look at this shit rn ok Look
Tumblr media
it says GIF it says it RIGHT THERE right??? right?????? then WHY
Tumblr media Tumblr media
?????????????
and it also gave me all This bullshit
Tumblr media
like did i ask?? did i fucking ask???? i already have all the individual frames why do i need even M o re i mfjgjgk
((rationally ok yea thats v useful for if ur making the animation in krita and want to export the frames to use elsewhere, but like uhhh 1. again, they’re not transparent & 2. i should have the option of saying i don’t want these??? bc *meme voice* i don’t want these)
so in the end i could find NO correct method of exporting animations as a gif in krita bc every ooption that says gif is fuckign LYING to ur face there are NO gifs in krita, aliens made the progam who looked at gifs and went “hmm i thikng this is how a gif works “ and just made jpegs instead but somehow got on the computers good side and got it to lie for them about it being a gif so thats why it says gif on the file still even tho its not a gif illimati confinr
so what is the conclusion to this? well i said there was good news too, and this is the portion where i divulge that sweet nectar (i type dthis 2 seconds ago and @ me what the fuck)
so after wasting a good 2 hours trying to figure out krita i gave up and watched some good old [youtuber name redacted bc what if it shows up in search & ppl see this dumbass post in there but it rhymes with fjackfsepticfeye] to relax into accepting my fate that i’ll never be able to upload my animations to tungle except in poor quality loopless video form, making me into a laughing stock on my own art blog, but THEN i had a stroke of genius, in my Brain
so if u read yesterday’s post u might remember that flipnote studio, the animation program i use on my ds, to animate, has the option to export files as gifs, both animated and sequential (meaning either as one fully animated gif or each individual frame separately), which is super convenient, but as i mentioned yesterday, any time i tried to open the folder with those files on my laptop, it crashed immediately
WELL today i thought “hey, how about instead of opening the folder in the sd card when it’s plugged in, how about i copy that folder from the sd card to my flash drive, and try to open it there, in case it’s the card’s hardware that’s causing the problem, not corrupted files”
so i tried that and it FUCKING WORKED THANK GOD GLORY HALLELUJAH
so now instead of spedning A THOUSAND YEARS trying and failing to force art programs to bend to my will i can just export the animations straight from my ds and drag them onto my computer Just As God Intended oh GOD im so fucking happy
here’s the gif in the end, i’m gonna post it to my art blog too but this is the Green Version bc i animate in green bc of some default settings in flipnote that i got used to, plus it makes me feel like i’m just sketching so nothing really has to be finalized so i’m comfortable while i work, and also it’s just nice ok it’s a Nice Green
Tumblr media
(there’s a few frames at the end that are like the extra scraps from while i was working dw i got rid of those in the final version that i’m posting to my art blog later. also i added my blog url to that one too it’s aaaaaall good)
the only downside to this method is that i can’t change the canvas size to be 540px wide to fit with tumbrl s image dimensions but whatever i can just post them in a text post and fix the html to display it at its original size instead of the resizing bullshit tmurbl pulls constantly ugh. anyway it works great on desktop but it’s inevitably gonna look like shit on mobile no matter what i do *Big Ass Shrug*
anyway thats the end of my success story uhh i can’t make the like comment & subscribe joke again bc i already did that in the last post so like bye i guess thanks 4 watchign & have a great day i’ll see u in my next fvideo

“zenthisoror replied to your photo “Shiro at the Galaxy Garrison...”
Oh, wow, thanks so much for the reply! It really is a matter of zooming in and being patient with the details, isn't it? XD I tend to focus so much on the eyes that I forget that I can apply the same detail to elsewhere too. I'm running Krita on a fairly old system. Apparently I only just have enough memory at a time for using the graphics tablet and the software. It's been pretty painful on occasion and I've lost work so many times due to impromptu crashes. X( The lag....the lag is so, so painfully frustrating.
Yeah, zooming in lots helps so much! I wish I could work on 6000px wide canvases. It's surprisingly hard to find a cheap laptop with a decent sized screen and a good graphics card, sadly.
Krita looks good, btw! Hadn't heard of it before! Shame it still runs slowly though on your PC.
Focusing on the eyes is the best strategy though, you’ve got that right. And unless you have a lot of time to waste, realistic paintings are a massive pain to do anyway. DX
“zenthisoror replied to your photo “Shiro at the Galaxy Garrison...”
But, enough of my moaning. ;) That Shiro artpiece was loovely.
Thank you!!! XD XD XD I want to make this a series. Currently working on prisoner Shiro and then next up will be palladin Shiro.

AHHHHH!! I just saw the artwork!!!!!!! IT. IS. BEAUTIFUL. I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ANSWERING! YOU'RE TALENTED AF!!! (this made my crappy day into a better one) I'd looking forward to seeing more of your artwork! (wish i could be as talented as you) btw what drawing program do you use?
AWWW THANKS SO MUCH YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH IT MEANS TO GET A MESSAGE LIKE THIS! I’ll try and post art consistently but school is a thing and these next two years are the ones that actually matter so I need to be careful with how much I procrastinate on art. Also, with practice you could easily surpass me, so don’t give up and just wish, practice will get you there! I use Adobe Photoshop CC, but it is very expensive and there are plenty of cheaper or free programs out there. I’ve heard Krita is good (It’s free), medibang paint pro is cheap too and kinda like paint tool SAI (I’ve tried this one, it works), just do some research into it :)
